- 1:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:27Speaker 1: He has got a lot of stuff going on, but
- 1:31Speaker 1: he is here, Alan, What is up?
- 1:34Speaker 7: Well?
- 1:35Speaker 8: Chip?
- 1:35Speaker 9: You know, you know, lives can throw you some curveballs.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It sure can, and it can.
- 1:39Speaker 9: Cause you some can cause you some stress and anxiety.
- 1:41Speaker 9: And if I knew how to cast a fly rod,
- 1:43Speaker 9: I might know how to get rid of some of that.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Good segue, Very nice segue. Those of us who do
- 1:50Speaker 1: that understand exactly what you're saying. Yes, I would say,
- 1:56Speaker 1: as poor as I am passing a fly rod, sometimes
- 2:00Speaker 1: there's anxiety on the water as well, but not often,
- 2:03Speaker 1: not often.
- 2:05Speaker 9: I'm right there with you, Chip.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So tell us what we got going on, Alan.
- 2:12Speaker 9: So October eighteenth, which is really just a week and
- 2:15Speaker 9: a half away, right, Yeah, we're having the fourth annual
- 2:19Speaker 9: fly Fishing roundup out at Milican Reserve, and this year
- 2:24Speaker 9: we're partnering with Milican Reserve they're having their Pumpkin Palooza
- 2:29Speaker 9: ball festival same day.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Nice.
- 2:31Speaker 9: So you get in the trooper right there. Well we're
- 2:35Speaker 9: having go ahead, no you go ahead, So there is
- 2:40Speaker 9: a there is a fee to get in, So twenty
- 2:43Speaker 9: five bucks gets you both festivals. I'm kind of calling
- 2:47Speaker 9: it a mullet festival. It's it's business in the front,
- 2:51Speaker 9: party in the back.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I like it.
- 2:53Speaker 9: So all the Pumpkin Festival. You can imagine in the
- 2:56Speaker 9: front pumpkin eating punk contest, pumpkin dunkin. Have you ever
- 3:01Speaker 9: seen them chunk pumpkin pump as I have it is.
- 3:05Speaker 9: It is quite a spectacle. There'll be races and face
- 3:10Speaker 9: painting and all kinds of stuff going on in the front.
- 3:13Speaker 9: That's just a great family fall festival. And then in
- 3:17Speaker 9: the back by the lake, we're having the roundup. And
- 3:19Speaker 9: every year we have great fly casting instruction and we've
- 3:24Speaker 9: got fly tires out there, we've got live music, and
- 3:27Speaker 9: this year Pumpkin Palooza has added the benefit of a
- 3:31Speaker 9: beer garden. And everything goes from ten to two on
- 3:37Speaker 9: Saturday the eighteenth, and at two o'clock we transition to
- 3:41Speaker 9: the after party events. So we're going to have a
- 3:46Speaker 9: Casting Cup, so there'll be some stations set up and
- 3:49Speaker 9: you can you can do a casting challenge there. We're
- 3:53Speaker 9: going to do a pro am, so we'll stick you
- 3:54Speaker 9: with a a either a casting instructor or a guide
- 4:00Speaker 9: and it'll be a team event, so it'll be it'll
- 4:02Speaker 9: be a guide and a and a and a novice.
- 4:05Speaker 9: At that same time, we've got anglers in ale. You'll
- 4:08Speaker 9: have access to the lake to fish and we'll have
- 4:10Speaker 9: an open bar and then at five o'clock we transition
- 4:14Speaker 9: to our main You know, this is a fundraising event,
- 4:18Speaker 9: so our main fund frame of fundraising. Dinner and auction
- 4:22Speaker 9: starts at five, be over by seven, and man, it's
- 4:25Speaker 9: just a full day of fun.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You always have a lot of really nice auction items
- 4:29Speaker 1: by the way.
- 4:31Speaker 9: We do indeed, and this year we've got trips. We've
- 4:35Speaker 9: got a Heart of Texas Armory is putting up a
- 4:38Speaker 9: rifle and a thermal scope.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Nice.
- 4:42Speaker 9: We've got several guides around the country that are that
- 4:45Speaker 9: have trips on there that uh one of them in
- 4:48Speaker 9: Idaho it's a two. They've got lodging and fishing on
- 4:54Speaker 9: the Cooteney River up there, and I was there just
- 4:57Speaker 9: four or five weeks ago, Chip.
- 4:59Speaker 7: It was beauty.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Well, I've never fished in Idaho, Alan, Well.
- 5:06Speaker 9: This was our first time too. We went to Cordelane. Yeah,
- 5:09Speaker 9: it was one hundred degrees up there.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Chip, it was warm for me.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Man.
- 5:13Speaker 1: They've had drought up there through August and September. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: we went to Breckenridge a few weeks ago, and actually
- 5:22Speaker 1: I can't complain about the temperature then. But in July
- 5:26Speaker 1: we were on the Madison and the Yellowstone and it
- 5:29Speaker 1: was really warm both those days. It was not good
- 5:32Speaker 1: for trout fishing.
- 5:34Speaker 9: You know, you know, we go when we can exactly,
- 5:37Speaker 9: not always when it's perfect.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Exactly exactly.
- 5:41Speaker 9: Speaking of Breckinridge, Yes, my buddy, my buddy, Kenny Wyatt. Yes,
- 5:45Speaker 9: as a house up there. Yes, it sleeps nineteen.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You've done this before, we.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Have every year.
- 5:51Speaker 9: He's been super generous with this and offered this house
- 5:54Speaker 9: up It's a three day, three nights day. I guess
- 5:58Speaker 9: it's what four days it's however that works out. And
- 6:02Speaker 9: it has the most beautiful view. It's above the town.
- 6:05Speaker 9: It looks across the town and over to the mountain.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Oh Man.
- 6:08Speaker 9: And every day you can walk, wake up and see
- 6:10Speaker 9: the sunrise and just enjoy the beautiful part of Breckenridge.
- 6:17Speaker 9: And there's lots of fishing around their chip.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yes there is, Yes, there is one of our favorite places.
- 6:23Speaker 1: There's lots of water around there. So I know you
- 6:27Speaker 1: have a website. We want to get people to go
- 6:30Speaker 1: there that can they buy They can buy tickets ahead
- 6:32Speaker 1: of time, I'm sure, Alan.
- 6:34Speaker 9: Absolutely, if they go to goodfly dot org, there'll be
- 6:38Speaker 9: a link over to the Pumpkin Paloozer website to get
- 6:42Speaker 9: tickets for that, and then for all of the after
- 6:46Speaker 9: function after Pumpkin Blues that kind of winds down at too,
- 6:51Speaker 9: then there's tickets available on our website for that. There's
- 6:54Speaker 9: a there's an all in one ticket where you get
- 6:57Speaker 9: all the things in the in the evening. Yeah, it
- 7:00Speaker 9: would be about one hundred and fifty dollars ticket for
- 7:02Speaker 9: ninety bucks.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And tell our listeners Alan about good Fly and where
- 7:08Speaker 1: the proceeds will will be used.
- 7:11Speaker 9: Absolutely so. Good Fly is a Texas nonprofit formed right
- 7:14Speaker 9: here in the Brass Valley. We offer free one day
- 7:18Speaker 9: fly casting workshops to first responders as a tool to
- 7:21Speaker 9: reduce stress and anxiety. Man, we pray the day that
- 7:25Speaker 9: we call a first responder that they're having a better
- 7:27Speaker 9: day than we are, and we just simply know that's
- 7:29Speaker 9: not true. So it's a tool they can use in
- 7:33Speaker 9: their front yard at the station and we teach them
- 7:38Speaker 9: to fly cast in the morning, we have a really
- 7:40Speaker 9: nice lunch, we tyson knots, and then we fish with
- 7:43Speaker 9: them for the afternoon. It ends up just being a
- 7:46Speaker 9: fantastic day. It's free to them, and this fundraiser this
- 7:50Speaker 9: on the eighteenth, is our opportunity to raise some money
- 7:53Speaker 9: so that can continue to be free service for them.
- 7:55Speaker 1: So the fly Fishing Roundup, we're talking that this is
- 7:58Speaker 1: available for people with fly fishing skills of all levels,
- 8:03Speaker 1: from never to expert correct.
- 8:07Speaker 9: Every level chip you know. In our workshops, ninety percent
- 8:12Speaker 9: of the people have never picked up a fly rod,
- 8:14Speaker 9: and this festival will be the same way. We have
- 8:16Speaker 9: about fifteen certified casting instructors that will be there that'll
- 8:20Speaker 9: catch you at whatever level you're at and help you
- 8:24Speaker 9: cast a fly rod.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And we talk about this every year. I think some
- 8:28Speaker 1: people get intimidated, they think it's complicated. It's not if
- 8:35Speaker 1: I can do it, And I always say that women
- 8:38Speaker 1: are a lot better at it than men because they
- 8:40Speaker 1: listen to the instructors.
- 8:43Speaker 9: They you are so true about that, and Chip if
- 8:45Speaker 9: they wanted to come out and not do the fly
- 8:47Speaker 9: fishing part of it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Man.
- 8:49Speaker 9: There's going to be kayaks and paddle boards that Texas
- 8:52Speaker 9: A and M is putting.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Out on the lake ice.
- 8:54Speaker 9: There's live music. There's going to be a tailgate. We'll
- 8:56Speaker 9: have the game on if it comes on at two thirty,
- 8:58Speaker 9: by golly, we'll have the game on and you can
- 9:02Speaker 9: sit around and chat it up and have a great
- 9:04Speaker 9: afternoon with us.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Well, I know we've had great weather. It's been a
- 9:09Speaker 1: little warm, but we'll take the cloudless skies, especially for
- 9:13Speaker 1: this event. A week from Saturday. Goodfly dot org. Goodfly
- 9:19Speaker 1: dot org will get you the information that you need
- 9:23Speaker 1: for what's going on a week from Saturday. Alan, We
- 9:28Speaker 1: always appreciate the time. Thank you so much. And I
- 9:32Speaker 1: know I've been before, but I've never won before. Alan,
- 9:35Speaker 1: that's the problem.
- 9:37Speaker 9: This is your years tip.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Hey. It doesn't take anything but money, man, That's all
- 9:44Speaker 1: it takes.
- 9:44Speaker 10: That's right.
- 9:45Speaker 9: Hey, speaking of money, Yep, tickets right now are twenty
- 9:48Speaker 9: five bucks.
- 9:48Speaker 10: Yep.
- 9:48Speaker 9: At the gate they're going to be thirty I think
- 9:50Speaker 9: so don't.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Bury the lead, Alan, don't bury the lead. Hey, I
- 9:58Speaker 1: appreciate it, Thanks buddy, Thank you. All right, that's Alan King.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Goodfly dot Org. This is a cool event. It really is.
- 10:07Speaker 1: If you've been thinking about fly fishing, if you want
- 10:09Speaker 1: to take your kids out there, I'm telling you, the
- 10:13Speaker 1: chance to be on that lake is worth the price
- 10:18Speaker 1: of admission, and listening to all the instructors that you
- 10:21Speaker 1: have is more than worth the price of admission as well.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And you throw in the pumpkins. I mean, what more
- 10:28Speaker 1: can you do? All Right? I'm going to play a
- 10:31Speaker 1: little podcast here this uh and it's self explanatory. This
- 10:36Speaker 1: one comes from Montana. It's an affirmation of what we've
- 10:43Speaker 1: done on this show for years. It talks about animals attacking.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It's probably a little more educational and cerebral than mine is,
- 10:56Speaker 1: although maybe not. All right, let's let's hear about this podcast.
- 11:04Speaker 11: Kind of always this taboo around telling those stories, but
- 11:08Speaker 11: it's something that people are naturally interested in.
- 11:10Speaker 12: Meet Wes Larson, a there biologist specializing in human wildlife conflict.
- 11:18Speaker 12: He's also the creator of Tooth and Claw, a podcast
- 11:22Speaker 12: that examines the circumstances that lead to wild animals attacking humans.
- 11:27Speaker 11: So I wanted to figure out a way to tell
- 11:29Speaker 11: the stories without demonizing the wildlife. And in my mind,
- 11:32Speaker 11: it was like, they're going to get told regardless, so
- 11:35Speaker 11: it might as well be a biologist explaining them. It
- 11:37Speaker 11: might as well be someone that knows kind of the
- 11:40Speaker 11: animals reason for attacking and how often the people did
- 11:44Speaker 11: something wrong.
- 11:45Speaker 12: Larson grew up in Missoula.
- 11:47Speaker 11: The big point is kind of using the scariest possible
- 11:50Speaker 11: stories to actually empower people to feel safer out in
- 11:54Speaker 11: the great outdoors, and it is working. We get lots
- 11:56Speaker 11: of messages from people saying that because of what they've
- 11:59Speaker 11: learned on the podcast, they now feel much more confident recreating.
- 12:04Speaker 7: They feel like they.
- 12:05Speaker 11: Have the tools they need in case they do have
- 12:07Speaker 11: an encounter, and then they can actually enjoy that encounter.
- 12:10Speaker 11: They can enjoy the beauty of that animal rather than
- 12:13Speaker 11: being afraid the whole time.
- 12:14Speaker 12: And with ride ups in Outdoor magazine and good word
- 12:17Speaker 12: of mouth, listeners are finding this space to learn about
- 12:20Speaker 12: the world around us and the creatures we share it with.
- 12:24Speaker 11: Where when you're out hiking, you're not the top dog.
- 12:27Speaker 11: You do have to kind of pay attention to your surroundings.
- 12:30Speaker 11: And when you do that, the colors get brighter, the
- 12:33Speaker 11: smells are stronger, everything feels more intense because you are
- 12:38Speaker 11: paying attention to your surroundings. And for me, that's really
- 12:40Speaker 11: important to keep alive.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Tooth and Claw is the name of the podcast. And
- 12:47Speaker 1: for those of you who don't know anything about the
- 12:49Speaker 1: outdoors or think you know everything about the outdoors, and
- 12:53Speaker 1: no bear or animal that's going to scare you, listen
- 12:58Speaker 1: to Tooth and Claw. Speaking of a Missouri man was mauled
- 13:04Speaker 1: to death at an Arkansas campsite two days after texting
- 13:08Speaker 1: his family photos of a bear wandering near his tent.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Sam's thrown in the Ozark National Force near Mount Judea
- 13:21Speaker 1: when he stopped responding to family messages. His son called
- 13:26Speaker 1: police Thursday, had not heard from him in a couple
- 13:29Speaker 1: of days. When deputies arrived, they found the man's truck
- 13:33Speaker 1: and campsite abandoned, with clear signs something had gone wrong.
- 13:41Speaker 1: The campsite had been disturbed, there was an evidence of struggle.
- 13:46Speaker 1: There were drag marks leading from the campground into the woods.
- 13:52Speaker 1: The camper's body was found several yards away with severe injuries.
- 13:57Speaker 1: According to Newton, Sheriff Newton County Sheriff Glynn Wheeler. Wheeler
- 14:02Speaker 1: said his office cannot definitely state the man was killed
- 14:04Speaker 1: by a bear until the Arkansas Crime Lab completes the autopsy.
- 14:09Speaker 1: We know without a doubt that a bear was in
- 14:11Speaker 1: camp with our victim, and the injuries absolutely are consistent
- 14:16Speaker 1: with a bear attack. This is a highly unusual case.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Every time a bear comes kills somebody, it always comes
- 14:24Speaker 1: with the caveat oh, but this never happens. Authorities believe
- 14:29Speaker 1: the animal may have been a young male black bear
- 14:31Speaker 1: based on the photos. Investigators are working with wildlife officers, hunters,
- 14:37Speaker 1: tracking dog to locate the bear tested for any condition
- 14:41Speaker 1: that may have triggered the attack. He cautioned locals not
- 14:46Speaker 1: to hunt it for themselves. I don't want this to
- 14:49Speaker 1: become an open season on any bear that someone may see,
- 14:53Speaker 1: as most bears fear humans and run away. At the
- 14:56Speaker 1: same time, don't put yourself or others in jeopardy. The
- 15:01Speaker 1: campground has been closed until further notice as the investigation continues.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Our Animals Attack segment is brought to you each and
- 15:16Speaker 1: every week by shorlty Roofing. It is the home of
- 15:23Speaker 1: the bulletproof roof guarantee.
- 15:26Speaker 13: It was after a hailstorm a few years back. I
- 15:28Speaker 13: needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around and then
- 15:30Speaker 13: I found Shorlty Roofing and point I'm glad I did.
- 15:33Speaker 13: The folks at Shulty guided me every step of the way.
- 15:36Speaker 13: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 15:38Speaker 13: out of pocket cost would be after insurance. They took
- 15:41Speaker 13: the complication out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They
- 15:44Speaker 13: took off the damage roof, put on the new roof,
- 15:47Speaker 13: did all the cleanup, and I had my new roof
- 15:49Speaker 13: in one day.
- 15:52Speaker 1: The home by the bullet roof. All right. So I
- 15:57Speaker 1: saw this picture and you may have to. According to
- 15:59Speaker 1: snow opes, the photograph of a rattlesnake den of eighty
- 16:04Speaker 1: seven really large rattlesnakes has been attributed to different power
- 16:10Speaker 1: crews from Florida to Texas. While the attribution of the
- 16:15Speaker 1: photo is not accurate, it does properly depict rattlesnakes. According
- 16:23Speaker 1: to the California Bureau of Land Management, one of the
- 16:25Speaker 1: other groups suspected of taking the picture. The snakes shown
- 16:29Speaker 1: are Western diamondback rattlers. The Houston Chronicle link the photo
- 16:34Speaker 1: to a web page from nineteen ninety eight. The Western diamondbacks,
- 16:41Speaker 1: of course get to dins, but during the wintertime, and
- 16:50Speaker 1: they're one of the few venomous snakes found in Texas. Well,
- 16:53Speaker 1: there's water moccasins, there's cotton mouse, there's corals. This story
- 16:58Speaker 1: comes from California, and they don't know a damn thing
- 17:00Speaker 1: about Texas. They don't know about poisonous snakes. But let's
- 17:06Speaker 1: do this. You know, we were just talking about that
- 17:11Speaker 1: Tooth and Claw podcast. This is my educational moment for
- 17:16Speaker 1: you this afternoon. To avoid snake bags. Never disturb a
- 17:23Speaker 1: rattlesnake dead. Everybody got that. To avoid snake bites, don't
- 17:32Speaker 1: disturb a rattlesnake dead. You're more likely to see a
- 17:39Speaker 1: snake on a rock or hiding in shrubbery. Never put
- 17:42Speaker 1: your hand somewhere without looking first. And get them before
- 17:49Speaker 1: they get you. My gosh, they didn't say that in California,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but I'm just telling you snakes, get them before they
- 17:57Speaker 1: get you. We had a possum in my backyard earlier
- 18:00Speaker 1: this week. It was in the evening, and you know,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I don't live in the country. You know what I'm saying.
- 18:08Speaker 1: I told my wife. She was freaked out about it
- 18:11Speaker 1: because she went out to get the bird seed and
- 18:14Speaker 1: bring that in. We don't leave it up. And I
- 18:17Speaker 1: told her all the benefits of possums. She didn't. I
- 18:21Speaker 1: don't think she accepted that. I just don't think she
- 18:28Speaker 1: accepted that. She said, I want you to get the
- 18:30Speaker 1: gun and kill it. Well, first of all, you know
- 18:33Speaker 1: I would I would never do such a thing because
- 18:36Speaker 1: I live in a subdivision, so that would be bad.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I mean, if I had a a silencer with a
- 18:47Speaker 1: large scope, with one of those large pellet guns, that
- 18:52Speaker 1: could kill it a possum. You know, at some point,
- 18:58Speaker 1: if I thought the apostle was rabbit or causing harm.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I mean, there's a possibility that could happen at some point.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You hear what I'm saying. But I just didn't see
- 19:15Speaker 1: any need at the time. I wasn't mad at the possum,
- 19:18Speaker 1: not nearly as mad as my wife was. And I
- 19:21Speaker 1: told her, look, they eat insects, they actually keep snakes away,
- 19:26Speaker 1: they do some good things, They're a relatively clean animal.
- 19:31Speaker 1: There's all kinds of possum benefits. I know, it doesn't
- 19:36Speaker 1: look like it. They're not the cutest of animals. They're
- 19:40Speaker 1: not like trash pandas that people think are so cute,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and they will attack you. And I'm not saying a
- 19:46Speaker 1: rabbit apossum is good. So the statue of limitations ended
- 19:55Speaker 1: years ago. So I will tell you this. I come
- 19:59Speaker 1: home for lunch one day during the day, and this
- 20:01Speaker 1: has been well over twenty years ago. We've lived in
- 20:05Speaker 1: our house a long time. There is a big fat
- 20:08Speaker 1: possum walking across the fens in my backyard between me
- 20:14Speaker 1: and my neighbor's house. A big fat possum. Now, big
- 20:20Speaker 1: fat possums generally speaking, should not be out during the
- 20:25Speaker 1: middle of the day. You hear what I'm saying. This
- 20:29Speaker 1: one was wabbling a little bit. It didn't look great.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I may or may not have taken it upon my
- 20:39Speaker 1: own to do something about that possum on my back fence.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It may or may not have fallen in the neighbor's
- 20:50Speaker 1: yard when I took it upon myself to do something
- 20:53Speaker 1: about that possum, and my neighbors may or may not
- 20:58Speaker 1: have ever talked to me again since what we call
- 21:01Speaker 1: the possum incident. But I do not regret it. I
- 21:09Speaker 1: do not regret it get them before they get you.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm not advocating going possum hunting in your backyard, especially
- 21:21Speaker 1: in the middle of a subdivision. Some of you people
- 21:24Speaker 1: live on creeks, you live kind of on the edge.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Some of you live in the country. You're used to
- 21:30Speaker 1: all kinds of animals, Okay, And I get that. I
- 21:36Speaker 1: mean I do. And some of you may or may
- 21:41Speaker 1: not want certain kinds of animals around. And I certainly
- 21:47Speaker 1: understand that. Some of you I've talked to have seen
- 21:51Speaker 1: alligators swimming in your ponds before, and you have taken
- 22:00Speaker 1: it upon yourself to dispatch the alligators. Good for you.
- 22:08Speaker 1: By the way, you don't want gators near your kids,
- 22:12Speaker 1: near your grandkids, in your farm pond. You don't want those.
- 22:18Speaker 1: So just saying we talked last week, gators showed up
- 22:22Speaker 1: in South Podria Island. I've been down there all my
- 22:24Speaker 1: life and going down there all my life. Never seen
- 22:26Speaker 1: an alligator or heard of an alligator at South Podria Island.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I will say again, they're trying to take over. They've
- 22:33Speaker 1: already taken over the state of Florida. Now they're trying
- 22:36Speaker 1: to take over the state of Texas. Mostly in Louisiana.
- 22:40Speaker 1: They're in the swamps and the people kill them and
- 22:42Speaker 1: eat them and they're fine over there. But here in
- 22:47Speaker 1: our farm ponds and little lakes, now, we don't want
- 22:51Speaker 1: them ever. So I'm just saying, you've got my permission. Now.
- 22:57Speaker 1: If the game boarding catches you, you've never heard of it,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and I've never heard of you. But you got to
- 23:05Speaker 1: do what you got to do as a landowner. It's
- 23:06Speaker 1: all I'm saying. Cops rescued dozens of neglected animals from
- 23:12Speaker 1: a rancid upstate New York home, including Peacock's wallabies, tarantula,
- 23:20Speaker 1: an Australian bearded dragon lizard. Linda Hickey, aged sixty two.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Would you bring up a picture of her, because I
- 23:31Speaker 1: have a picture in my mind, Caleb, of what Linda
- 23:33Speaker 1: Hickey is going to look like, and I'm just going
- 23:36Speaker 1: to see how close this is. She was hit with
- 23:39Speaker 1: animal neglect charges after the grizzly discovery in the town
- 23:45Speaker 1: of what is that That wasn't her? In the town
- 23:48Speaker 1: of Warwick, New York, where authorities found more than one
- 23:52Speaker 1: hundred other animals in putrid conditions. Sheriff Paula Tenna said
- 24:01Speaker 1: this case highlights the importance of community partnerships in combating
- 24:05Speaker 1: animal neglect. The dedication of the Warwick Valley Humane Society
- 24:10Speaker 1: and Animal Nation allowed us to act swiftly and humanely. Well,
- 24:13Speaker 1: we're not worried about humanly. Most of the animals were
- 24:17Speaker 1: kept in unsanitary fecies strewn cages, including rabbits with unkempt
- 24:24Speaker 1: and overgrown fur. Police began investigating the home after receiving
- 24:30Speaker 1: complaints from the community, where animal rescue workers ended up
- 24:36Speaker 1: removing one hundred and six animals from the property. Deputies
- 24:44Speaker 1: executed an arrest warrant, which led to the search of
- 24:48Speaker 1: the house. A total of sixty six animals were seas, rabbits, geese, parents,
- 24:54Speaker 1: a raccoon, tortoises, prairie dogs, a starling, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, hamsters, ferrets,
- 25:01Speaker 1: a goat, bearded dragons, a snake, a hermit crab, a tarantula, peacocks,
- 25:07Speaker 1: a wallaby, dogs, ducks and cats. Two days later, eighteen
- 25:13Speaker 1: more Hickey has been charged and the house was condemned
- 25:20Speaker 1: by local building officials. So did we ever find that picture? Yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 1: probably didn't exist. I mean that just gives me the
- 25:30Speaker 1: heb gbs I know there's a lot of crazy. We
- 25:34Speaker 1: all know there's a lot of crazy people in the world, right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: we get that. How do you live with that? I mean?
- 25:45Speaker 1: And do you ever sleep? Right? If you have tarantulas
- 25:50Speaker 1: and snakes and peacocks and oh oh that that just
- 25:57Speaker 1: couldn't be worse, could not be worse? All right? From
- 26:03Speaker 1: the ridiculous to the sublime, We're going to tell you
- 26:06Speaker 1: about John Jones and the people at Lucko Ranch Pond

- 39:32Speaker 7: Attention thanks for having me. On this came to my
- 39:37Speaker 7: attention through a friend of, mine you, know mentioned. SPEARFISHING
- 39:46Speaker 7: i love scuba, diving AND i was just chatting with
- 39:50Speaker 7: him and then you, know told him, like oh, yeah
- 39:53Speaker 7: LIKE i one day would love to go and try.
- 39:54Speaker 7: On he's, like, well you should check this. Out you,
- 40:00Speaker 7: know you should you should reach out To Nick, manshaka
- 40:03Speaker 7: who was uh leads an environmental group In San marcos
- 40:08Speaker 7: where he spears uh catfish invasive sucker suckingout armor catfish
- 40:17Speaker 7: and that immediately got my attention and reached out to
- 40:20Speaker 7: him and found out there was a tournament and uh
- 40:24Speaker 7: and you know my editors were Immediately uh all systems
- 40:27Speaker 7: go uh for.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Me, Yeah so did you participate or did you just
- 40:32Speaker 1: go down and and and?
- 40:34Speaker 7: Watch, yes, NO i. PARTICIPATED i think part of the
- 40:38Speaker 7: fun of writing this piece WAS i was the first time.
- 40:41Speaker 7: Spearer i've never done it. Before so that's part of
- 40:45Speaker 7: the fun in the in the comedy at my my, Expense,
- 40:49Speaker 7: uh trying the new sport out and it's a tough.
- 40:53Speaker 7: Sport it's it's very. Niche. Uh you don't really see
- 40:56Speaker 7: it too, often but it appears to be a growing
- 40:58Speaker 7: sport in particular here and. ACCESS a lot of the
- 41:01Speaker 7: participants in the tournament were first timers or even just second,
- 41:06Speaker 7: timers people that only just picked it up over the past.
- 41:09Speaker 7: Year some people picked it up during THE covid shutdowns because,
- 41:12Speaker 7: again great way to get outdoors and it's a really fun.
- 41:16Speaker 7: Sport it is not for the faint of. Heart as
- 41:19Speaker 7: my story gets, INTO i had some run ins with
- 41:21Speaker 7: some critters that you best. Avoid so.
- 41:27Speaker 1: This particular, tournament was it only the sucker mouth armored?
- 41:31Speaker 1: Catfish was?
- 41:32Speaker 4: That?
- 41:32Speaker 7: Was?
- 41:33Speaker 4: That was that?
- 41:34Speaker 1: It as far as the, tournament that.
- 41:36Speaker 7: Was the primary. Target, yes but you're also hunting for,
- 41:40Speaker 7: tilapia which are also. Invasive and there's a few other things.
- 41:46Speaker 7: TOO i, mean the group also rewards people for picking
- 41:50Speaker 7: up trash and also for picking up some, snails certain
- 41:55Speaker 7: particular kind of snails that are also. Invasive so there's
- 41:58Speaker 7: there's other you, know critters that you know may. Target
- 42:02Speaker 7: but for the most, part the biggest culprit by far
- 42:06Speaker 7: is the armored.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Catfish so how many of those were removed during that,
- 42:11Speaker 1: tournament give or?
- 42:12Speaker 7: Take SO i can actually tell you exactly how. Many
- 42:17Speaker 7: so over the course of sixteen, days about sixty or
- 42:21Speaker 7: so spears of including, myself removed four hundred and forty
- 42:26Speaker 7: three good farmer, catfish, yes and twenty nine. Talapia the
- 42:31Speaker 7: reason for soaky, talapia it's one they're a lot harder to. Catch,
- 42:34Speaker 7: yeah they're also easily mistaken for some native, species so
- 42:38Speaker 7: you have to be very careful about making sure you're
- 42:40Speaker 7: spearing the right, fish and there's just not that many
- 42:44Speaker 7: of them compared to the. Catfish but, yeah four hundred
- 42:46Speaker 7: and forty three and that includes spears that you, know
- 42:51Speaker 7: like me who ended up contributing nothing to the hall
- 42:53Speaker 7: because it was my first.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Time.
- 42:57Speaker 7: SO i was very.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Humbled, yeah how large did these fish?
- 43:01Speaker 7: Get they can get quite, large you. Know They we're
- 43:06Speaker 7: seeing ones occasionally that are as long as fifteen, inches
- 43:10Speaker 7: so that they're they're quite. Hefty but for the most,
- 43:13Speaker 7: part especially with, spearing it's easy to spot the big.
- 43:17Speaker 7: Ones but the winner of the tournament is Named Dylan.
- 43:21Speaker 7: Depew he caught well over one hundred, catfish but many
- 43:26Speaker 7: of them were, babies like little. Ones he was able
- 43:30Speaker 7: to actually even grab them with his bare hands and
- 43:33Speaker 7: just bag. Them so that's and that's very valuable obviously
- 43:38Speaker 7: if you can catch them while they're young before they can. Reproduce,
- 43:42Speaker 7: Yeah so over.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Four hundred and how long a stretch of river were people?
- 43:48Speaker 7: Fishing so for the tournament they split up the river
- 43:53Speaker 7: into three. Sections they sort of pick an, upper, middle
- 43:56Speaker 7: and lower and you're looking at probably not very. LONG
- 44:00Speaker 7: i mean each SECTION i would wager, was you, know
- 44:03Speaker 7: maybe two hundred three hundred, meters and so it's not
- 44:07Speaker 7: that big of a, section but you find an incredible
- 44:10Speaker 7: amount even in those small, areas which is pretty terrifying
- 44:14Speaker 7: for the. Ecosystem but as, yes but as my piece points,
- 44:19Speaker 7: out you, know spearing may not eradicate the, fish but
- 44:22Speaker 7: it does significantly suppress the. Population but in order to eradicate,
- 44:28Speaker 7: them that's something that scientists are right now working on
- 44:30Speaker 7: figuring out how to do.
- 44:31Speaker 1: It so is this about an average for these? Tournaments
- 44:34Speaker 1: was it? Was you know that it's the people that
- 44:37Speaker 1: were there seem to, think, yeah that we get about
- 44:39Speaker 1: four hundred every time we do.
- 44:41Speaker 7: This, yeah, roughly that's that seems to be about the.
- 44:45Speaker 7: Case and especially in the early, years they were getting
- 44:47Speaker 7: more sure because there were. More BUT i was talking
- 44:51Speaker 7: To nick about, this and what he's noticed is that
- 44:54Speaker 7: over the years the numbers are sort of very slightly
- 44:58Speaker 7: declining in terms of how many they're picking, up but more,
- 45:01Speaker 7: importantly the size is also. Dropping there's the spears are
- 45:07Speaker 7: doing an excellent job of grabbing the big. Ones now
- 45:11Speaker 7: they're starting to get smaller a little bit, so and
- 45:14Speaker 7: that's Encouraging so.
- 45:17Speaker 1: The other THING i really enjoyed as you you wrote
- 45:21Speaker 1: about how best to eat these fish that are being?
- 45:24Speaker 7: Speared, YES i let it go ahead.
- 45:29Speaker 4: NOW i was just.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Wondering where the recipes came.
- 45:32Speaker 7: From, Yeah so there's a sidebar in the piece about
- 45:38Speaker 7: different kinds of invasive. SPECIES i, mean for your listeners
- 45:41Speaker 7: who are Around brian And College, station you'll find a
- 45:46Speaker 7: lot of big head, carp especially in the in The
- 45:48Speaker 7: Brazos river. Ye and then you also can find grasscarp
- 45:53Speaker 7: In Lake conroe in The Trinity river. Area so those,
- 45:59Speaker 7: fish by the, way are best caught just with traditional
- 46:01Speaker 7: rot and reel because the fish or excuse, me the
- 46:04Speaker 7: water that those fish are in pretty, murky no. Doubt
- 46:07Speaker 7: it's best to do spearing in places Like San marcos
- 46:11Speaker 7: because the water is super. Clear the other, thing by the,
- 46:14Speaker 7: way THAT i want to emphasize is spearing is best
- 46:18Speaker 7: done at, night which is why AGAIN i say it's,
- 46:21Speaker 7: sport not really for the thing, hearted because it's just
- 46:24Speaker 7: you a flashlight and your. Spearing you don't really know
- 46:26Speaker 7: what you're gonna find down. There but for for grass,
- 46:29Speaker 7: carp the big head, carp it's best just to use
- 46:31Speaker 7: rot and, reel and then for the for the eating
- 46:35Speaker 7: carp make for delicious. Eating you can make it in a,
- 46:38Speaker 7: curry you can make it in a hot, pot turn
- 46:40Speaker 7: it into a fish. Dip catfish can be consumed as,
- 46:44Speaker 7: well but for our purposes or for knicked. Purposes In
- 46:48Speaker 7: San marcos they most primarily compost them just because they
- 46:52Speaker 7: catch so many it's just not really feasible to keep
- 46:56Speaker 7: them frozen and then to eat. Them but, tilapia of
- 46:59Speaker 7: course for excellent meeting yep, uh and especially In, metaca
- 47:03Speaker 7: which is, exactly by the, way what the tournament. Does
- 47:07Speaker 7: at the end of the, tournament which is held twice a,
- 47:09Speaker 7: year the next, one by the, way is held In,
- 47:11Speaker 7: november so registration is about to open, up so first
- 47:15Speaker 7: time first timers are very welcome to join and try
- 47:18Speaker 7: their hand at. It and regardless of how well you,
- 47:20Speaker 7: do you are invited at the end to a fish
- 47:24Speaker 7: fry That nick hosts In San, marcos and he fries
- 47:27Speaker 7: up and volunteers try out talapia that they caught into free,
- 47:32Speaker 7: Tacos so you don't have to even participate in the
- 47:35Speaker 7: tournament to go down and pick up some free tacos from.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Him the the, talapia as you, mentioned they're they're on
- 47:43Speaker 1: restaurant menus for. SURE i know that they are farm,
- 47:46Speaker 1: raised and apparently that's where many of these have come
- 47:50Speaker 1: from as they escape into public.
- 47:53Speaker 7: Waterways, yes so especially you know, talapia the primarily escaped
- 48:03Speaker 7: that we're serving as coolants for power. Plants they thrive
- 48:08Speaker 7: in water that's a little, cooler which is why again
- 48:11Speaker 7: they seem to have found a home in The San
- 48:14Speaker 7: marcos river systems because the water there is seventy two
- 48:18Speaker 7: degrees year, round which is nice and cool for them
- 48:22Speaker 7: and carpet their own you, know escape, stories a lot
- 48:26Speaker 7: of them from fish, farms and then some of them
- 48:29Speaker 7: from stocking, farms people that you, know we're on private,
- 48:32Speaker 7: land but then get flooded and then they swam into public.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Waters you, KNOW i know from experience for people who
- 48:41Speaker 1: have had either private, lake semi private or. Whatever when
- 48:45Speaker 1: the hydrilla starts choking off the, water they'll bring in
- 48:49Speaker 1: grasscarp and there's a there's such a ballance there because
- 48:53Speaker 1: as you, mentioned they become prolific and they eat everything.
- 48:59Speaker 7: Exactly, yes all these fish are our major threats to
- 49:05Speaker 7: native wildlife and to the. Ecosystems they eat either the
- 49:09Speaker 7: same food as native, fish or they eat the food
- 49:12Speaker 7: that native fish rely, on especially plankton and and detritus
- 49:18Speaker 7: like that's something that is a direct threat To texas native. Species,
- 49:23Speaker 7: so you, know this is a case where you, know
- 49:25Speaker 7: hunting and fishing very much is encouraged by The Texas
- 49:30Speaker 7: parks Of Wildlife department to help out in suppressing their
- 49:34Speaker 7: populations and in helping the native species thrive and at
- 49:40Speaker 7: least have a chance against these.
- 49:43Speaker 1: INVASIVES i wasn't aware of the silver. Carp you mentioned
- 49:47Speaker 1: they come and you you you note where all of
- 49:50Speaker 1: these fish are, native and the silver carp comes From
- 49:53Speaker 1: china And russia And, vietnam AND i was not. Aware
- 49:58Speaker 1: and you you Mentioned Red river tributaries And Lake texoma
- 50:04Speaker 1: and that area where they've. COME i guess that's because
- 50:08Speaker 1: there are fish farms in that area where they've escaped.
- 50:11Speaker 7: From that's the best of my. Understanding that's exactly what,
- 50:15Speaker 7: happened that there were fish farms and stocked ponds again
- 50:19Speaker 7: on private, land but. Flooding you, Know i'm not sure
- 50:24Speaker 7: exactly how long ago might have, happened but probably a while,
- 50:27Speaker 7: ago you, know decades, ago there was some flooding that
- 50:30Speaker 7: happened and then the fish escaped from those ponds and
- 50:33Speaker 7: then entered into The Red River, Lake texoma areas and
- 50:38Speaker 7: are are there and have thrived. Unfortunately but, yeah a
- 50:43Speaker 7: lot of carp you, know both the silver silver, grass
- 50:46Speaker 7: and they've had all of them come From asia and
- 50:50Speaker 7: In russian again almost all of them were escape us
- 50:52Speaker 7: from fish.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Farms, Now i've known about the lionfish for a long.
- 50:57Speaker 1: TIME i you, KNOW i spend a lot of time
- 51:00Speaker 1: in the salt, water AND i know In florida it's
- 51:04Speaker 1: been a huge. Problem you mentioned The Gulf coast Of
- 51:08Speaker 1: texas out the flower. Gardens these THINGS i know are
- 51:14Speaker 1: really good to eat if they're cleaned and taken care of.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Properly BUT i know In florida there's been a war
- 51:21Speaker 1: on lionfish for a long.
- 51:23Speaker 7: Time, yes and unfortunately that war has spread to much
- 51:28Speaker 7: of the rest of The. CARIBBEAN i happened to actually
- 51:31Speaker 7: have been In jamaica just a little over a year
- 51:34Speaker 7: ago scuba diving there and some of the team of
- 51:39Speaker 7: scuba DIVERS i was with they were spearing. Lionfish they
- 51:44Speaker 7: really are, everywhere which is their beautiful. Fish it's fun
- 51:48Speaker 7: to look, at but then you realize that for every
- 51:51Speaker 7: one of, those there's probably a lot of other fish
- 51:54Speaker 7: that should have been there but are not because they've
- 51:56Speaker 7: been driven away by their. Predatory as they're aggressive predators
- 52:02Speaker 7: and they're also very, adaptable they will learn to eat
- 52:06Speaker 7: whatever is available to. Them so, yeah they're a, menace
- 52:10Speaker 7: and not only For, florida but also again for the
- 52:13Speaker 7: rest of The caribbean and for the flower garden. Banks
- 52:17Speaker 7: and there's also Again Texas parks And wildlife actually hosts
- 52:23Speaker 7: a spearing invitational you have to. Apply but for scuba
- 52:28Speaker 7: divers to go and help not only hunt them but.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Research, them you have to handle those fairly, carefully do you?
- 52:34Speaker 7: Not, yes definitely they you, know their barbs are. Poisonous
- 52:40Speaker 7: they don't they can't kill, you it's nothing that, severe
- 52:44Speaker 7: but they definitely hurt if they get too close to,
- 52:47Speaker 7: you and could cause some pretty severe. Irritation but they're
- 52:51Speaker 7: pretty slow, swimmers you, Know so if you aim, well
- 52:54Speaker 7: you should be, fine but if you do, miss you
- 52:57Speaker 7: do have to learn how to back up pretty.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Quick Uh and and AS i mentioned, EARLIER i know
- 53:04Speaker 1: that that in a lot of. RESTAURANTS i don't want
- 53:06Speaker 1: to say, delicacy but but they are very popular fish to,
- 53:10Speaker 1: eat are they.
- 53:10Speaker 7: Not they're. Fantastic. Yes if any if you ever get
- 53:14Speaker 7: a chance to and your listeners get a chance to
- 53:16Speaker 7: order some, linfish do not pass up the. Opportunity. Uh
- 53:20Speaker 7: it's they're they're fantastic eating and there and.
- 53:23Speaker 1: AS i, mentioned they're they're fairly common in restaurants in The,
- 53:27Speaker 1: keys Especially uh in, RESTAURANTS i mean.
- 53:31Speaker 7: Yes, uh definitely in The. Keys uh and UH i
- 53:36Speaker 7: wonder as well IF i ought to look into this
- 53:38Speaker 7: some more if there's availability for them in in restaurants
- 53:43Speaker 7: on The gulf coast Of texas as, well because they
- 53:46Speaker 7: they are becoming prolific there and and again are are
- 53:49Speaker 7: are eating quite quite good for hunting and and for
- 53:51Speaker 7: eating sometimes if you go on an expedition like AGAIN
- 53:55Speaker 7: i saw this in In. Jamaica even you know you'll
- 53:58Speaker 7: catch these and then build lay it right on the
- 54:00Speaker 7: boat and serve it. Up, yes it's a, yeah it's.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Delicious so, so now that you've been on underwater night spearfishing,
- 54:11Speaker 1: journey are you ready to venture into the golf on
- 54:15Speaker 1: a night time spearfishing? Venture?
- 54:18Speaker 7: Sure, no it's it's it really. Is it's a thrilling.
- 54:22Speaker 7: Sport it's a lot of, fun and, uh it's it's
- 54:25Speaker 7: a it's a very uh you, know you you're part
- 54:29Speaker 7: of the. Elements, uh there's there's no separation between you
- 54:32Speaker 7: and you know the other critters that are out uh you,
- 54:35Speaker 7: know hunting. Themselves, yes, uh and, YEAH i had a
- 54:38Speaker 7: couple of close encounters with with some pretty terrifying creatures
- 54:44Speaker 7: THAT i detailed the story And i'll leave that for
- 54:47Speaker 7: the readers to uh uh discover for themselves with. Me
- 54:50Speaker 7: but it's it's a really great. Sport it is SOMETHING i.
- 54:55Speaker 7: Recommend and again you're doing some good uh you, know
- 54:57Speaker 7: for the environment and also probably for your appetite as.
- 55:00Speaker 14: Well.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Well the other THING i would say is The San
- 55:04Speaker 1: marcus is a little shallower than The gulf Of, mexico
- 55:07Speaker 1: so controlling your breath is probably a little more problematic
- 55:12Speaker 1: on those deeper dives in the.
- 55:14Speaker 7: Gulf, YES i would venture to say. So and there's
- 55:20Speaker 7: probably some more difficult, creatures, yeah a little.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Bit and yes and. Such. Yes Josh alvarez has this
- 55:33Speaker 1: article on invasive species in The october edition Of Texas
- 55:37Speaker 1: Monthly josh really really fun. READ i really appreciate your time.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Today all. Right that Was Josh alvarez from an interview
