- 0:07Namaste. People are discouraged,
- 0:12depressed, worried. The world is seemingly breaking
- 0:20down in a number of different ways.
- 0:24We're focused on the political disruptions, the economic
- 0:28concerns, the toxic chemicals that are polluting our
- 0:33environment and increasing our health issues.
- 0:38We're concerned about the climate change and the change in
- 0:43disease vectors and the wars and the mass migrations and all
- 0:49these other problems. We've discussed endless times.
- 0:52And people are simply tired, burned out, discouraged.
- 0:59What can I do as just some small individual here to solve any of
- 1:06these problems? And this leads to either apathy
- 1:14or distraction. But we have another option, and
- 1:23that is to support the development of a new form of
- 1:29consciousness that can transform the way we look at things,
- 1:39transform the way we act, the way we think, and the way we
- 1:45interact with others and with the world around us.
- 1:50We think, what can I do? I'm just some individual here
- 1:54out of 8 billion or more people on the planet.
- 1:59But there is a way forward, and that way forward is really not
- 2:09complicated. We think, oh, there's 8 billion
- 2:14people, but not all 8 billion people have the same influence
- 2:20or power of concentration and focus and action.
- 2:28And so we find that there are what was called in some
- 2:33sociological research done back in the 1960s, what we may call
- 2:39opinion makers. These are people who have an
- 2:43outside, outsize influence on what people think, what they do,
- 2:51and how they act. Many of us have heard about the
- 2:58100th monkey phenomenon. The 100th monkey phenomenon was
- 3:04an observation made by some anthropologists and some
- 3:08primatologists that there were certain monkeys in a part of the
- 3:13world where one monkey started washing his fruit before eating
- 3:16it and then other monkeys started copying it and pretty
- 3:22soon that whole tribe of monkeys began to wash their fruit.
- 3:28The interesting part was that once a certain number of monkeys
- 3:34started washing their fruit, this behavior seemingly
- 3:38promulgated to monkeys worldwide who were not in contact directly
- 3:46with the specific group of monkeys that initiated this
- 3:52behavior. So this was called the 100th
- 3:55monkey phenomenon, and it involved what we might call a
- 4:01tipping point by which a certain consciousness, a certain
- 4:09awareness, a certain capacity suddenly develops and manifests
- 4:15across a population when a certain number of that
- 4:21population make the change and adjust their awareness, their
- 4:27consciousness and their action. And so the question that we
- 4:32raise is if we do something, if I do something, if you do
- 4:40something, if the next person next to you does something and
- 4:45we influence other people and they do something just by our
- 4:49actions and behaviors and thought patterns.
- 4:54Who will be the corresponding 100th monkey in the human race
- 5:02to change the approach of fragmentation and separation and
- 5:10division and conflict into one of cooperation and harmony and
- 5:18increasing understanding of the unity of all existence?
- 5:27We need to reflect on that, and then with that understanding, we
- 5:33can begin to act. What can we do?
- 5:37First of all, each individual can take up spiritual practices
- 5:44for inner growth. This is not a prescription for a
- 5:48specific religious background, philosophical background,
- 5:54scientific background. It's simply that each
- 5:57individual, where they are, with whatever their belief system is,
- 6:03should take up the practice of inward observation, meditation,
- 6:09concentration, to begin to understand the forces that move
- 6:15them and begin to separate themselves from that motivating
- 6:26energetic force that just drops on them from outside, from the
- 6:32world around them, from their contacts and their
- 6:35correspondence with other people.
- 6:38And begin to understand that they have the ability to choose,
- 6:44the ability to refocus their attention on higher things,
- 6:51higher principles, more harmonious resolutions, rather
- 6:57than a vital reactive nature based in separation,
- 7:02fragmentation and hostility. When that happens, we begin to
- 7:09see that our own lives take on a new tenor.
- 7:15We begin to change. Our understanding of things
- 7:19grows and develops. And as that happens, we begin to
- 7:26interact with people in a different way, and that begins
- 7:31to change the way other people respond and react.
- 7:36So this is a way for each individual to become part of the
- 7:43solution rather than remaining part of the problem.
- 7:49Now, we also work externally, We do things in the world.
- 7:54And generally we try to separate our inner life, our spiritual
- 8:04life, our spiritual practices from our outer life.
- 8:08And we say, I'm going to sit for meditation, or I'm going to go
- 8:12and pray, or I'm going to do a retreat.
- 8:17And then we come back to our outer life and we seemingly
- 8:21forget all that. We go out and we do our jobs and
- 8:25we earn money and we live our lives.
- 8:27And it's like we've made an artificial separation.
- 8:34When we get to the point of seeing that the outer work can
- 8:42and should express the inner consciousness, then we begin to
- 8:50extend the influence of our new insights, our new capacities,
- 8:59and our new standpoint into everything we do.
- 9:05Whether it's some work that we consider trivial or meaningless,
- 9:12or it's some larger program in the economic, political,
- 9:19scientific, or technical fields. Whatever it may be, if we treat
- 9:27it with an understanding that it is the expression of our
- 9:32spirituality, then we begin to have an outside and outsize
- 9:41influence on things, events and people around us.
- 9:47And so we look at what Trio Robindo had to say that all life
- 9:53is yoga. What does that mean?
- 9:57It implies that we can transform our activities, our lives and
- 10:07our purpose into a yogic process.
- 10:12If we look at the Eightfold Path of Patanjali, the first step is
- 10:19to develop an asana. Asana means seat in their
- 10:24traditional yogic practice. It means that you sit in a
- 10:28particular posture, with your legs crossed, sitting upright
- 10:34and still, quiet and relaxed, in order to undertake the spiritual
- 10:41discipline. But in a broader sense, our
- 10:45asana is the standpoint we take in society, in each situation,
- 10:51in our work, in our families, the seat of our consciousness.
- 10:59The next step is pranayam. Pranayam is the control of the
- 11:05breath, and in the traditional path of yoga they have
- 11:08particular breathing techniques that you have to do and
- 11:13practice. But in a broader sense,
- 11:17pranayama is the control of the vital energy that comes into you
- 11:23and that you absorb and that you then transmit through your being
- 11:30and that you then release back into the world.
- 11:35And so we can make our vital interchange into a form of
- 11:41pranayam. Before the practice of asana and
- 11:48pranayam come the preliminary practices called the yamas and
- 11:53the niyamas, and these are really usually treated as some
- 11:59kind of moral observations. You shouldn't harm other beings.
- 12:03You shouldn't be jealous, you should have contentment, you
- 12:08should treat others with respect, etcetera.
- 12:14These are however, not moral statements.
- 12:17They are practical scientific statements.
- 12:21They are statements to create the correct mental, emotional
- 12:26and vital basis to hold higher energies as they begin to
- 12:33manifest, without spilling them, without erupting and without
- 12:39breaking down our physical, mental, emotional, nervous and
- 12:45vital being through the force of those higher energies.
- 12:52And so practicing the Yamas and the Niyamas is essential, not
- 13:00necessarily as a moral statement of rules, but as a methodology
- 13:06for understanding the vibrations that can act upon us and that
- 13:15distract, disturb and disperse the energies of our lives.
- 13:23We then come to pratyahara, which is withdrawing the
- 13:28attention from the energies that are active in our lives so that
- 13:33we can then begin to concentrate and focus.
- 13:37And this means to in the practical sense of the
- 13:43traditional yoga, it means withdrawing your attention from
- 13:48all the senses. But in a wider sense, pratyahara
- 13:53means simply to change the focus and attention of what we deal
- 14:02with in the world. Do we focus our attention on the
- 14:08various energies of accumulation, of food, of sex,
- 14:15of fame, of vanity? In other words, are we trying to
- 14:21aggrandize our ego or are we switching our attention to the
- 14:30spiritual purpose, the meaning of our lives, the opportunities
- 14:38we have to contact and attain a higher state of consciousness?
- 14:43Withdrawing our attention from activities which are dispersing
- 14:48and lowering of our level of awareness that are distracting
- 14:54to us is the deeper meaning on an external sense of the
- 14:59practice of pratyahara. The obvious next step in the
- 15:06eightfold path is called dharana, which is the focus of
- 15:10the concentration. And again in the practice of
- 15:14yoga, it means to then concentrate the force.
- 15:18Generally, there are prescriptions to concentrate it
- 15:22in the energy center between the eyebrows or behind the heart or
- 15:26above the head, and that's important.
- 15:30But the real sense of dharana in a wider viewpoint is to focus or
- 15:38concentrate on the positive uplifting activities and the
- 15:42growth of awareness, the consciousness, beauty and
- 15:45positivity in the world to begin to enhance our ability to tune
- 15:54and focus to these higher forces and energies and concepts as
- 16:00opposed to being distracted. The next is tiana or meditation.
- 16:08This is to again create a mental space of calm and quiet that can
- 16:20be centered, that doesn't get drawn out every time something
- 16:25happens that is not externally focused and reactive, and which
- 16:31can then appreciate what is taking place in the world from a
- 16:39new, calmer, more balanced perspective.
- 16:47We come then to Samadhi, which is in the practice of the
- 16:53traditional path of yoga, the development of a trance like
- 16:59state in which all outer awareness is withdrawn and we
- 17:05are totally focused inwardly. And this also can be reapplied
- 17:14on an external sentence to just maintain throughout our lives in
- 17:19all of our activities, all of our actions, that centered
- 17:24space, that separation of the witness consciousness from the
- 17:30active nature of our being, where we can see and act and
- 17:38respond totally from what we might call a divine standpoint
- 17:44as opposed to the ego standpoint.
- 17:49Now, there are certain other formations that are used to
- 17:53enhance the yogic practice in the traditional paths of yoga.
- 17:58One of them is called mudra. Mudra is the physical expression
- 18:03or gesture, and mudra is the stance we take in the world in
- 18:12how we interact with others. The energy we put into the world
- 18:17and our receptivity to higher vibrational forces is what we
- 18:24could call our mudra. There is the mantra, which is
- 18:31the use of various sounds to concentrate and develop energies
- 18:40on certain vibrational levels. And the mantra in the world is
- 18:45the way we express ourselves, the way we put energy out into
- 18:50the world using the power of voice as a mode of expression of
- 19:00our consciousness. And then there's bhava.
- 19:05And bhava is more or less the mood or the standpoint we take,
- 19:13the energetic stance we take as we go through the world.
- 19:19We can convert every action, every deed, every expression
- 19:27into a form of yogic practice. There is no separation between
- 19:38our inner life and our outer life.
- 19:43When we do this, we can find that the influence that occurs
- 19:54naturally not through some kind of power of money or politics or
- 20:00connections or whatever else the world has traditionally found,
- 20:06but through simply the power of the radiance of your being.
- 20:12You begin to have an impact and build around you people and
- 20:21circumstances that support the expression of a higher mode of
- 20:29consciousness. And this is the first step in
- 20:36the solution towards creating a better world.
- 20:42There are many more steps, and we can discuss those in future
- 20:48sessions, but for now let's take away from it that the first step
- 20:56is to Orient ourselves towards turning all life into the
- 21:03practice of yoga.
