- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, we head to the Irish countryside
- 0:04for a spooky, mysterious tale of revenge and the supernatural.
- 0:10Following the death of her twin sister, Darcy travels to the home
- 0:14where she died to find out how.
- 0:17Also, does one of my co-hosts slash a favorite movie again?
- 0:23This is oddity.
- 0:26This is Xenomania.
- 0:44Kearns: TV Oddities, don't ya?
- 0:46Ryan: Y- yes.
- 0:47Jon: Oh,
- 0:47Kearns: Yes.
- 0:48Do you remember the shows that were on it?
- 0:50Ryan: Yes.
- 0:52Kearns: I remember Head.
- 0:53Or is it The Head?
- 0:54Ryan: The Head.
- 0:56Kearns: The Head.
- 0:56That was the one where the alien lived in the dude's head,
- 0:58Ryan: Yep.
- 0:59Jon: yeah.
- 1:00Kearns: and it would crawl out of there at times.
- 1:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05Kearns: different shows on there.
- 1:06Ryan: That was like late night MTV too.
- 1:09That was like
- 1:10Kearns: That was...
- 1:11Ryan: you watch South Park on
- 1:12Jon: But,
- 1:12Ryan: Central,
- 1:13Jon: but
- 1:13Ryan: then you
- 1:14Jon: do you remember the
- 1:18Kearns: I'm positive of it.
- 1:19Ryan: Well,
- 1:20Kearns: Positive of it.
- 1:20Ryan: Swim was around at that time, but they were doing like Space Ghost Coast
- 1:25to Coast, so it was a little more tamed.
- 1:28Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:28But, uh, Sealab.
- 1:30Sealab was the ish, man.
- 1:34If you never saw Sealab, you gotta get on the internet right now and watch it.
- 1:37It's unbelievably funny.
- 1:39Jon: WWE?
- 1:44Ryan: Yes, Golga, Kurgan,
- 1:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:47Ryan: Luna
- 1:48Jon: Luna Vachon.
- 1:49Ryan: Uh, Insane Clown
- 1:50Kearns: Oh, I remember Luna.
- 1:53Oh, ICP.
- 1:54Shout out to my Juggalos out there.
- 1:57Ryan: You got
- 1:58Jon: You have Juggalos?
- 2:00Kearns: I don't know, we, we might have Juggalos in the fan base.
- 2:03Ryan: I-
- 2:04Jon: We might.
- 2:04Ryan: a, there's a Juggalo Championship Wrestling.
- 2:08Jon: Um, because of course there is.
- 2:09Ryan: oh, it's
- 2:10Kearns: Yeah, why wouldn't there
- 2:11Ryan: Legit.
- 2:12I've seen a
- 2:13Kearns: be?
- 2:13Is it legit, Ryan?
- 2:14Ryan: seen a couple episodes.
- 2:15It's, it's pretty legit.
- 2:16There's storylines.
- 2:17Vince Russo is there, the write- former writer of the WWE,
- 2:21Kearns: Look at that
- 2:26Ryan: I don't wanna create controversy on that.
- 2:28Jon: I mean,
- 2:29Ryan: believe he did.
- 2:30He helped kill it along with
- 2:32Jon: he, he, he,
- 2:34Kearns: then, am I
- 2:35Jon: belt on David Arquette.
- 2:37You, you don't have a l- a serious wrestling company if
- 2:40David Arquette is your champion.
- 2:42Ryan: I agree with that.
- 2:43Kearns: Wasn't that for Ready to Rumble?
- 2:45Wasn't
- 2:45Ryan: It was...
- 2:46Jon: I think it was supposed to be, yeah...
- 2:48Ryan: Yep, they
- 2:49Kearns: Pretty fly stuff.
- 2:51Ryan: too, but
- 2:54Jon: Listen,
- 2:55Ryan: it's all over.
- 2:56Everything
- 2:57Jon: for- forget all of them.
- 2:59What we need is Xenomania Championship Wrestling.
- 3:04Ryan: XCW?
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:07Jon: Yeah,
- 3:08Kearns: has a nice ring
- 3:09Jon: it does.
- 3:10It does, doesn't it?
- 3:11Kearns: Maybe we can, you know, commission The White House to have the first, like,
- 3:14Royal Rumble style event out in the
- 3:17Jon: Yeah.
- 3:17Ryan: we don't... No, we don't have to go to the
- 3:19Kearns: We
- 3:19Ryan: for that.
- 3:20Kearns: have to go... Okay.
- 3:21Jon: you gonna do when Xenomania runs wild on you, brother?
- 3:27Kearns: Nice.
- 3:27Very nice.
- 3:29this week, there, we are, we are discussing the horror movie oddity
- 3:37Ryan: Which feel like it's so good.
- 3:40Um, it was a first watch for me.
- 3:42I feel like, was it a first watch?
- 3:44It was a first watch for you too, Current, right?
- 3:46Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 3:47Ryan: first watch for you, John, or you've seen it?
- 3:49Jon: No, I watched it a few months ago for the first time.
- 3:51Ryan: It's, it's so good.
- 3:53I feel like it's an underrated gem.
- 3:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:55Ryan: Like, it
- 3:56Jon: It really is.
- 3:58It really is.
- 3:59Kearns: yeah.
- 4:00Jon: So it's, written and directed by Damian McCarthy, who's probably
- 4:04about to blow up with "Hokum."
- 4:06Ryan: Yeah.
- 4:09what we saw with Oddity, with the suspense, the lighting, the music.
- 4:14I, I mean, I was talking to John earlier about this.
- 4:16I jumped a few times during this film, like legit jumps and, like, I covered
- 4:22my eyes during one part, I'll admit.
- 4:25the part where she's got her finger in the golem, I was
- 4:27like, "There goes her fingers.
- 4:28I can't watch this." Mars Attacks put me in a PTSD moment since I was a kid.
- 4:34So like,
- 4:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:37Ryan: it,
- 4:37Kearns: Very likely.
- 4:41Ryan: know, a well-known actor.
- 4:43feel like
- 4:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:45Ryan: he's gonna be up there now.
- 4:48Jon: Yeah, I, I, y- you know, it'll also depend on what
- 4:52choices he wants to make too.
- 4:54I mean, everything he's done is written and directed by, so, you know, he hasn't
- 5:00worked with anybody else's material, and I, I kinda hope it stays that way.
- 5:05Kearns: Yeah, he's got his own vibe, and it's a good vibe.
- 5:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:08Kearns: movie, starts out with some panache too.
- 5:10It's not a terribly slow start.
- 5:12He
- 5:12Jon: Yeah.
- 5:13Kearns: going right away.
- 5:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:14Kearns: a modern audience, I feel.
- 5:15Jon: Yep.
- 5:16Ryan: Yep.
- 5:16Jon: Yep.
- 5:16Kearns: like the creepy dude from the mental institution at the window.
- 5:20Ryan: I- he looked friendly.
- 5:23Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 5:24Jon: With my,
- 5:25Kearns: a glass eye that I wouldn't let in the
- 5:27Jon: my, favorite prosthetic eye in movie history probably with the, like,
- 5:31drawn on circle in the middle of it.
- 5:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 5:35Ryan: I,
- 5:35Kearns: Yeah, nothing wrong here.
- 5:36Ryan: mean, okay, not to get on a tangent, but Last Action
- 5:40Hero, that glass eye collection.
- 5:44Kearns: That was a good-- That's a good glass eye
- 5:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:47Ryan: Just saying.
- 5:48Jon: But,
- 5:48Kearns: good reference in
- 5:49Jon: but like, like drawing the iris or pupil onto your own fake
- 5:54eye yourself, that's, that's like a whole different level of like,
- 5:59"I'm probably not mentally fit."
- 6:02Kearns: consider if you're on
- 6:03Ryan: is he gonna
- 6:03Kearns: the other side of that door wondering
- 6:09Jon: Is that, is that Sharpie on his eye?
- 6:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:14Hmm.
- 6:14What's more unnerving though, this drawn-on portion of the eye or if it was
- 6:17just a w- white cue ball in his head?
- 6:21Ryan: Hmm.
- 6:22I, I'll
- 6:23Kearns: Toughie.
- 6:24Ryan: The Sharpie's creepier.
- 6:25Kearns: a
- 6:26Jon: I think the Sharpie's creepier too.
- 6:28Kearns: weird.
- 6:29Jon: I think the, like, the, the just keeping it white sort of
- 6:33makes him seem a little lazy.
- 6:35He didn't have an idea for what to do with it.
- 6:40Kearns: Oh, shoot.
- 6:41I've never seen an all-white one before.
- 6:44That would be very unnerving.
- 6:45Ryan: Pyre.
- 6:46Kearns: in the real world, I've met many people with prosthetic eyes,
- 6:49glass eyes, whatever we call them.
- 6:51Never seen one
- 6:52Jon: Many?
- 6:53Kearns: just white.
- 6:54Jon: Wow.
- 6:54Kearns: at least 10.
- 6:55Jon: Wow, really?
- 6:57Kearns: together, gentlemen,
- 6:58Ryan: Yep.
- 6:58Kearns: met at least four.
- 7:01Ryan: Yep, yep, I know one from where we work, so...
- 7:06Jon: I'm trying to do the math.
- 7:07I can only think of, like, two.
- 7:09Ryan: That's it.
- 7:11Jon: name names, uh, obviously.
- 7:13Kearns: was a lazy eye at one point, but
- 7:15Jon: Yeah.
- 7:15Kearns: no, it's not.
- 7:16Jon: Oh,
- 7:18Ryan: No.
- 7:18Kearns: these-- This is over the span of many years, but still, they,
- 7:22some have come, and some have gone.
- 7:25Ryan: They've, they've flown
- 7:26Kearns: Anywho, they have.
- 7:28But yeah, the prosthetic eye is interesting.
- 7:30Um, I definitely... So one of the things that the writer and director
- 7:33does is he pulls from lots of different traditions, and that eye, the way
- 7:38that they drew it, is definitely to make you think of the evil eye.
- 7:43Have
- 7:44Jon: yeah.
- 7:44Kearns: ever heard of the evil eye?
- 7:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:46Kearns: just like one, especially when she's using her psychic powers on it, her
- 7:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:52Kearns: voodoo,
- 7:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:53Kearns: call
- 7:53Jon: And, and our,
- 7:55Kearns: uh...
- 7:56Jon: our glass-eyed guy, it presents as very intimidating,
- 8:00but Olin is not a bad guy.
- 8:03Kearns: One of the most benevolent characters maybe in the movie.
- 8:06Uh, uh, unfortunately, he's a, you know, he was a murderer.
- 8:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:11But he wasn't.
- 8:13At least not,
- 8:14Kearns: was...
- 8:15Jon: at least not in the instance.
- 8:17Ryan: No, he was protecting himself.
- 8:20Jon: the protector at the house.
- 8:23Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:24Jon: Mm.
- 8:25I can't say old Olin.
- 8:28Ryan: Ole?
- 8:28Kearns: old Olin.
- 8:29Jon: Old Olin, like, those are, those are
- 8:31Kearns: The
- 8:35Jon: he overheard
- 8:37Kearns: door.
- 8:41Jon: warn her when he got released.
- 8:42He knew, he knew what was coming for Danny.
- 8:46Ryan: which was nice foreshadowing because, you know, he's saying
- 8:49he's from the mental institute.
- 8:51She like, you know, Danny connects all the pieces.
- 8:54Um, it's her husband Ted's, uh, patient, and he keeps mentioning the voices,
- 8:59and she's like, "Mental institution, voices. This guy's insane." But
- 9:03Jon: Mm-hmm
- 9:03Ryan: we get to figure out later on, the voices of the plan of what's going
- 9:08to happen to her, and it's like, it's a nice, like, mixture, and I, I like that.
- 9:13He does a lot of foreshadowing.
- 9:14He does a lot of building up.
- 9:16Kearns: He does, and that's a nice misdirection, too, because in
- 9:18the beginning, you think it's him
- 9:22And you kind of follow that thread for a little while, though they
- 9:25do unravel it pretty quickly.
- 9:26And then you get your kind of like, your through line to the truth is the
- 9:30sister we continue on through the movie, which is pretty cool too, actually.
- 9:34I thought that was gonna kind of ruin it, it worked out very, very well.
- 9:38Jon: Yeah.
- 9:39Kearns: So the first one is the evil eye, which the Greeks...
- 9:42That's a Greek one, by the way.
- 9:44If you guys are into that sort of thing out there,
- 9:47Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 9:48Kearns: into your evil eyes.
- 9:49It's supposed to ward off evil and such, which works out pretty
- 9:54well considering the character.
- 9:56Jon: Yep.
- 9:56And it does.
- 9:57He's, and that you get a lot of, like the character work in
- 10:01this whole thing is really good.
- 10:03You know, you get, you get Ted who, like you see him and you're,
- 10:08"Oh, this guy's just a wuss." Like,
- 10:11Ryan: You got worse from him?
- 10:12I thought
- 10:13Jon: from Ted?
- 10:14Yeah.
- 10:14Ryan: thought
- 10:15Jon: Ted...
- 10:16Ryan: right from
- 10:16Jon: Well, well, yeah, I mean, I don't, those are not mutually exclusive.
- 10:21You can, you can be a jerk and a wuss, and he's se-
- 10:24Ryan: Fair.
- 10:24Jon: just sorta also like disinterested in the women in his life.
- 10:31You know?
- 10:31Like Danny, Danny's ta- talks to him on the phone and he's just
- 10:36like, "Well, whatever." And then Jana's getting, gets uncomfortable
- 10:40in the house for good reason.
- 10:42I mean, it's a house that someone was murdered in, regardless of who did it.
- 10:47And he...
- 10:47Kearns: female at that.
- 10:49Jon: and he just sort of poo-poos that, you know.
- 10:51Like, "Oh, no, it's fine."
- 10:54Kearns: Double exposure with the camera stuff.
- 10:57He's, yeah, he's a chode.
- 10:58Ryan: a workaholic too.
- 10:59I feel like he's so focused on his work that, like, he feels like he
- 11:04doesn't have the time, but that makes him such a good antagonist because
- 11:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:10Ryan: really care.
- 11:11He's,
- 11:12Jon: Yeah,
- 11:13Ryan: feel
- 11:13Jon: I...
- 11:14Ryan: yeah, like the whole world to him is just everyone's a patient,
- 11:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:19Ryan: study to him.
- 11:20Jon: Mm. And, and listen, I, would start this by saying, you know, there's a lot
- 11:25of spoilers right here already, but it, it's not a deeply disguised mystery, uh,
- 11:32as to who orchestrated Danny's murder.
- 11:37Ryan: Oh, no.
- 11:38Jon: McCarthy doesn't go to great lengths to disguise the mystery.
- 11:43You know, you meet Olin and he's a nice misdirect for a few minutes, but then
- 11:47you, you know, you meet Ivan the, the orderly, and Ted, and it's like Okay.
- 11:54Uh, maybe Olin's telling the truth.
- 11:57Ryan: Y- I mean, you can also see it when Ted visits Danny and, uh, him
- 12:04the glass eye, Olin's glass eye, her.
- 12:07Jon: Darcy.
- 12:08Ryan: Or not--
- 12:08Jon: He visited Dar- Darcy's the one that was all in...
- 12:12Kearns: though?
- 12:14Ryan: It's--
- 12:14Jon: asked for it.
- 12:15Ryan: Yes.
- 12:16Jon: a- she asked for the eye because she, you know, she's got the, the sort
- 12:21of psychic ability and he, I mean, I...
- 12:24Kearns: would wonder why he would give it to her.
- 12:26Jon: Because he's a skeptic.
- 12:28Ryan: Yes.
- 12:29Jon: He, he,
- 12:29Ryan: in that
- 12:30Jon: a, he's a medicine guy, he's a science guy.
- 12:32He doesn't, he didn't believe it.
- 12:34He didn't believe the bellhop bell either.
- 12:36You know, he's just,
- 12:37Kearns: Yeah, we found that
- 12:38Jon: he, he didn't,
- 12:39Kearns: that
- 12:40Jon: he, he's, he, you know, he dismisses Darcy as a kook, and I think he believes
- 12:46that giving her this glass eye is just gonna sort of calm her down and, you
- 12:51know, allow her enough closure so he doesn't have to deal with her anymore.
- 12:56Kearns: Yeah, it's,
- 12:57Ryan: fear from him,
- 12:58Kearns: it's...
- 12:59Ryan: can-- Like, the character at least, he is, like, scared
- 13:02of her in a little bit.
- 13:03He's nervous.
- 13:04He's, like, very quick.
- 13:05He wants to get out of there quickly.
- 13:07And, you know, it sh- again, it shows more of that villainous role in him.
- 13:12Kearns: I think scared of her in the way that you're scared when
- 13:14you've done something wrong and it's right beneath the sheet,
- 13:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:17Kearns: like, ready to pull it
- 13:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:19Kearns: the kind of vibe I got from her
- 13:21Jon: Yeah.
- 13:21Yeah, and y- you're, you're worried that she's just perceptive enough to pick it
- 13:26up, and then, you know, you add in the element that he goes to see her in her
- 13:32creepy, like cursed object antique shop.
- 13:35Ryan: Which was
- 13:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:36Ryan: would you guys
- 13:37Kearns: That place was awesome.
- 13:39Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 13:41Ryan: Yeah.
- 13:41Kearns: maybe not,
- 13:42Jon: No, I would absolutely go.
- 13:44Ryan: go
- 13:44Kearns: with
- 13:45Ryan: as a group.
- 13:45It's in the city.
- 13:46We get a hot dog, maybe a
- 13:47Kearns: you.
- 13:48Ryan: maybe a gyro,
- 13:49Kearns: Like,
- 13:49Ryan: you know?
- 13:50Kearns: you reach over and hit a bell, and then one of us is dead.
- 13:53That's why I might not go.
- 13:56Ryan: What is this, the Necro Comic-Con?
- 13:59Jon: Well, you, you, you know one of us is idiot enough to ring the bell.
- 14:03Kearns: Exactly.
- 14:03It'll be a sign.
- 14:04Like, there, there will be no ropes or anything.
- 14:06It'll just be a bell with a sign, like, "Do not ring," and
- 14:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:09Kearns: down to two.
- 14:11Jon: Ding, ding, ding.
- 14:13Kearns: But the oddities place, I'm not so sure I would go to visit.
- 14:17But she was a cool character.
- 14:18Um, it's played by the same actress,
- 14:20Jon: is the same actress.
- 14:21Yep, yep.
- 14:22And,
- 14:22Kearns: That is a nice way to do that so that she doesn't, you know, get no
- 14:25screen time for dying, like, in the first
- 14:28Jon: It's, i- it's pro- it's probably relevant to also
- 14:31mention that Darcy is blind.
- 14:33Ryan: Yep.
- 14:33Kearns: Yes.
- 14:34And it was actually difficult to pick up on if you're... Like, I was
- 14:38watching going, blind," but she's not acting blind, walking blind.
- 14:43she's moving very fluidly
- 14:45Jon: Mm. Mm-hmm.
- 14:45Mm-hmm.
- 14:46Kearns: and stuff like that.
- 14:47Now, so I'm not criticizing the movie for it, but it's easy to forget that
- 14:51she's blind while watching the movie.
- 14:55Jon: Yeah.
- 14:55Kearns: maybe part of it.
- 14:56Jon: Yeah.
- 14:57Ryan: my, like, excuse for it, 'cause I'm-- I thought the same thing.
- 14:59I'm like, "She's, she's a witch.
- 15:01She can
- 15:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:02Ryan: see what's going on and all that."
- 15:04Kearns: It's Daredevil.
- 15:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:06Kearns: she's heightened senses.
- 15:09Jon: And they, you know, there, there's really this, this, this element to this.
- 15:14McCarthy talks about his inspirations for the, for h- his movies in general,
- 15:19and particularly "Oddity." And it's, um, it's the del Toro process,
- 15:25Kearns: Hmm.
- 15:26Jon: where he,
- 15:26Ryan: see that.
- 15:27Jon: he starts with these images and builds from the image.
- 15:32And you can definitely see that within, "Oddity" is, you know, the golem.
- 15:37He builds from the golem.
- 15:38He... The bell, the, the house, and the creepiness there.
- 15:44He, you know...
- 15:45Kearns: is a classic misdirect too.
- 15:47Like a
- 15:47Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 15:49Kearns: the, um... There's an actual trick where you, a callback
- 15:51that you have something show up in the beginning and it turns into
- 15:55something very important later on,
- 15:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:58Kearns: I forget what the hell it's
- 15:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:59Ryan: um-- might be getting the
- 16:02Jon: He--
- 16:05Ryan: I mean, it connects to the bomb theory where, you know, where
- 16:08something might happen, and you see it in the beginning, and then they, the
- 16:12character comes into contact with it.
- 16:13It's the Alfred Hitchcock theory.
- 16:15Like, you see the bomb under the table, but you're more focused, I think, on
- 16:20the people having the conversation,
- 16:22Jon: Yeah,
- 16:22Ryan: as the bomb's ticking, you're going back and forth
- 16:24between the ticking to the convo.
- 16:27Jon: y-
- 16:28Kearns: It's a little different.
- 16:29This isn't that, um, per se, 'cause it's, it's not, it's
- 16:32you've completely forgotten.
- 16:34Not ticking in the background,
- 16:36Jon: he,
- 16:37Kearns: it shows back up.
- 16:38Jon: he,
- 16:39Kearns: another thing.
- 16:39I forget what the
- 16:40Jon: he introduces the bell, and you're sure the bell is gonna
- 16:46play a role, and it doesn't.
- 16:49And then
- 16:50Kearns: Gone.
- 16:53Jon: in front of the big wooden crate, almost like praying to the crate.
- 16:59And then the next time you see the crate, it's being delivered
- 17:03to Ted and Yana at the house.
- 17:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 17:07Jon: And at that point, you don't even know what's inside the crate.
- 17:11Kearns: This is
- 17:12Jon: does, I believe.
- 17:12I believe that Ted, when he sees the crate, knows what's in it.
- 17:18Kearns: Bet she's super excited about it.
- 17:20Who wouldn't want that,
- 17:21Jon: Yeah.
- 17:22Ryan: was pretty
- 17:23Jon: guys, congratulations on your relationship.
- 17:26Here's a big creepy wooden crate with an even creepier golem inside of it."
- 17:32Kearns: Yeah, I believe it's wooden man in the movie, right?
- 17:34What do they call it specifically?
- 17:36Ryan: Uh.
- 17:36Jon: man, yeah.
- 17:37He calls a h-- um, in interviews, I've seen McCarthy sort of bounce
- 17:42between wooden man and golem.
- 17:45Kearns: he does name Golem.
- 17:46Interesting.
- 17:47That
- 17:47Jon: d-
- 17:48Kearns: though.
- 17:48Jon: def- he definitely like says that it's, you know,
- 17:51based on that golem concept.
- 17:56Kearns: Yeah, it's not too much of a reach, though.
- 17:58Jon: Yeah.
- 17:58Kearns: to figure it out on our own, I
- 18:00Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:01Kearns: nice if he left it unnamed.
- 18:02The wooden man is a Golem.
- 18:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:05Kearns: artistic flair to
- 18:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:07Ryan: man.
- 18:08Kearns: Kinda like the evil eye is very clearly an evil eye, but he doesn't talk
- 18:11Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:12Kearns: seen anything about the evil eye part.
- 18:14Jon: No, I know, I, I, I've read a bunch of interviews with him that
- 18:17the eye doesn't come up at all.
- 18:20Kearns: Yeah, it makes a lot of sense the way you th... if you think about it
- 18:23that way, but it's not necessarily... It... That doesn't mean, and this is
- 18:26something I learned from literature, it doesn't mean it was intended,
- 18:28Ryan: I was gonna
- 18:28Kearns: but it does fit awfully nicely.
- 18:30Ryan: accidental symbolism.
- 18:33Kearns: Yeah,
- 18:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:34Kearns: a thing.
- 18:34Ryan: happens in movies, and it-- sometimes it works or it's like, okay,
- 18:38we can connect, and sometimes it doesn't.
- 18:40This time it worked.
- 18:42Kearns: Right.
- 18:42Ryan: I'm shocked he hasn't noticed
- 18:43Kearns: Or it, it wasn't accidental at all, it's just he didn't talk about it.
- 18:46It's, um, bouncing between those two things.
- 18:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:49Mm-hmm.
- 18:49Kearns: is, like, it looks just like the traditional evil eye.
- 18:53It's really
- 18:53Jon: Yeah.
- 18:54Yeah, it's... I, a l- a lot of those little things that he does in this
- 18:59movie feel like they're intentional.
- 19:03They, like maybe it's accidental, but I don't think so.
- 19:07I think like a lot of this is very intentional.
- 19:12Kearns: There's an interesting... He's an interesting guy, too,
- 19:14in that he hodgepodges stuff.
- 19:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:17Kearns: this kind of broader umbrella mysticism thing, witchcraft,
- 19:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:21Kearns: guessing he's probably gonna do this in Hokum too,
- 19:23Ryan: Oh,
- 19:24Kearns: and he just pulls in a bunch of crap
- 19:26Jon: Yeah.
- 19:27Kearns: and works it.
- 19:28It works,
- 19:28Jon: Yeah.
- 19:29Kearns: upset me,
- 19:30Jon: Yeah.
- 19:30Kearns: a risky thing to
- 19:31Jon: Yeah.
- 19:32Yeah.
- 19:32So I mean, you know, he uses the golem sort of tale, which I think
- 19:38you can elaborate on some, Kearns.
- 19:41Kearns: A little bit.
- 19:42Um, it's Jewish.
- 19:43A lot of people don't realize that.
- 19:44If you're
- 19:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:45Kearns: Fantasy player or something, you've seen Golem pop up.
- 19:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:50Kearns: a lot of people think of Gollum from Lord of the Rings
- 19:52Jon: Yeah.
- 19:52Kearns: related.
- 19:53It's just, that's G-O-L-L-U-M.
- 19:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:57Kearns: Maybe Tolkien had something in mind for that, but
- 19:59that's not... it's not a thing.
- 20:01the Golem's cool because it harkens back to, like, the Talmud, Babylon.
- 20:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:07Kearns: Like, you're talking way back in the First Testament
- 20:09stuff when they did have a lot of Jewish mysticism going around.
- 20:13Gnostic texts for Christianity would be the equivalent, I think.
- 20:16But, The golem was, it was a avatar of vengeance.
- 20:21So the rabbi was the only one who had the, the magical powers knew the symbols
- 20:26and the chants to make it come to life.
- 20:29And there's, in some of the stories, there's a, a spoon, a special spoon
- 20:32that the rabbi uses to scoop the mud form the golem into its shape, and
- 20:38then he brings it to life, and the golem goes and exacts the revenge.
- 20:42But it's really common for them to go rogue.
- 20:46They don't always-- They don't a- they're not perfect by any means.
- 20:49They can go rogue.
- 20:50They can do bad things.
- 20:51So, um, you can have it, you can, uh... Well, I think in a, a lot of the ways
- 20:57that if you watch them and they're done too, there's the, symbol on their
- 21:00forehead, is Emet, which means truth in Hebrew, that's what gets it going.
- 21:06And then you have to whittle that down to Met kill it and turn it
- 21:09back to dust, and that's death.
- 21:12kinda neat.
- 21:13That's a little neat thing.
- 21:15Um, there's a good story too.
- 21:18Uh, it like a rabbi of Prague, and he had to save a whole bunch
- 21:22of Jews from the golem, uh, from persecution, which is a common
- 21:26story for the Jewish, unfortunately.
- 21:28And he used river mud to make the golem and sent it out to protect
- 21:33them, and it, it did a bunch of stuff.
- 21:35It wasn't just like clubbing people over the head.
- 21:37But then it started to go rogue, and he had to take it down.
- 21:42He had to, like, get rid of it afterward.
- 21:44But it's a common symbol for divine creation, and how, like,
- 21:50it, it doesn't have a soul, so it's not allowed to speak, right?
- 21:53And people in biblical lore were made out of clay or earth, we have
- 22:00a soul because we were made by the, the big maker, the big G-O-D guy.
- 22:05So we're like the perfect creation.
- 22:06A golem is an imperfect creation made by us.
- 22:09It's a copy of a copy, multiplicity.
- 22:11I like Pizza Steve.
- 22:12I'm done.
- 22:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:13Mm-hmm.
- 22:13Mm-hmm.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14Mm-hmm.
- 22:14Mm-hmm.
- 22:14Yeah.
- 22:15And it-- And like that kind of idea, you know, despite this not being Jewish
- 22:20at all and being very Irish, he, uh, McCarthy ties it in with, you know, a, a,
- 22:28a simple question that I saw him working on in interviews also is, if you were
- 22:33a witch, what folklore would you use?
- 22:37If, if you were out to get revenge, you know, knowing and believing
- 22:44that Ted killed your sister, how do you get your revenge?
- 22:48What folklore would that be?
- 22:50Kearns: the vengiest of
- 22:56Jon: I,
- 22:57Kearns: ve- vengeance.
- 22:57Jon: I,
- 22:58Ryan: It's the
- 22:58Jon: I
- 23:00Kearns: Yeah, you make them into zombies and
- 23:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:02Ryan: Serpent in
- 23:03Jon: I mean, I mean, the thing, the thing about putting that golem there is how
- 23:08unsettling it is to have this life-sized wooden man sitting at your table.
- 23:16Ryan: Oh, it's
- 23:17Kearns: 40 minutes of runtime
- 23:18Jon: With a, with a, with his mouth agape, you know, just...
- 23:25The whole time.
- 23:26Ryan: And then
- 23:27Jon: No.
- 23:28Ryan: its movements, like you see it for one second looking
- 23:30up or looking to the side,
- 23:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:32Mm-hmm.
- 23:32Ryan: pulls away for the reaction, then goes back.
- 23:35It's just like- You're like, oh, and then you hear the music in the background and
- 23:40it's like it sent chills on my spine.
- 23:42Like I would jump at those scenes.
- 23:44Besides the
- 23:44Jon: Yeah, they...
- 23:46Ryan: the wood man, the wood golem is like, what are we doing?
- 23:49Because you're waiting for him to move.
- 23:52You're waiting for him to do something.
- 23:54It's like
- 23:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:55Ryan: of the finger.
- 23:55You just want to see something, but you're like crap.
- 23:59You're like,
- 24:00Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 24:02Ryan: you know?
- 24:02You're
- 24:03Jon: Yeah.
- 24:03Ryan: ah.
- 24:05Jon: Yeah, ev- every time anybody is near the wooden man in this movie,
- 24:10you're waiting for that moment.
- 24:14He...
- 24:15Kearns: was, I was waiting for when she was pulling stuff out of the
- 24:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:19Kearns: Or he was-- Or who was pulling stuff out of the
- 24:21Jon: It was Jana.
- 24:23Kearns: Yeah, yeah, she was pulling stuff out of the head.
- 24:25And, uh, she, she gets away clean on this one.
- 24:28Jon: Yeah.
- 24:28Kearns: I guess
- 24:29Jon: Yeah.
- 24:30I mean, you know, she's... I mean, for the most part,
- 24:35Kearns: is having a dump truck.
- 24:37Jon: yeah, she, uh, they, you know, she... It's sort of
- 24:41implied that maybe Ted and Jana's relationship predated Danny's death.
- 24:48Ryan: I thought
- 24:48Jon: But...
- 24:49Ryan: obvious,
- 24:50Kearns: He didn't wanna kill her, though.
- 24:51Ryan: does make it known to at least the audience that they've been in a
- 24:55relationship for at least two years when she's talking to Ted on the
- 24:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 24:59Ryan: So, I
- 24:59Jon: Yeah.
- 25:00Ryan: it's friendship, she's like, oh, Darcy a little bit more.
- 25:06And that's what makes
- 25:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:08Ryan: out.
- 25:09But, I mean, the scene where she's – I thought she was going to put her finger
- 25:13in it and, like, the hole and then it
- 25:15Jon: Yeah.
- 25:15Ryan: trapped.
- 25:16was another scene I cringed at, too.
- 25:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:19Ryan: I mean, I feel like you get the suspense of her pulling everything
- 25:24you're waiting for the woodman to go, like, to get up and do something
- 25:27that you forget about Darcy.
- 25:28Because then when you hear her echo, put them back.
- 25:32mean, I
- 25:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:34Ryan: Because it's like
- 25:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:35Ryan: he's brilliant of using sounds and the music and the actors to amplify the
- 25:42Jon: Yeah,
- 25:43Ryan: which is a lost art I feel nowadays.
- 25:47Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 25:48Jon: Yeah,
- 25:48Kearns: agree with that
- 25:50Jon: he uses everything to, to build the suspense, and he cashes in on it.
- 25:54It's not, it's not like some other movies we've talked about before where
- 25:58they build suspense and then That's it.
- 26:02He's just built suspense for no reason.
- 26:04He cashes in.
- 26:07Ryan: Yeah, yeah, he does.
- 26:08I was thinking about movies that didn't cash in.
- 26:11And I feel like a lot of the movies we've watched, a good majority have cashed in.
- 26:16some haven't, like Fright Night Part 2, remake, not the
- 26:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:22Ryan: But the one movie we haven't covered that I think
- 26:27hits a spot is Bring Her Back.
- 26:28But we got to talk about that another time.
- 26:32Kearns: We're never gonna talk about that.
- 26:33By the way, the, the thing was Chekhov's Gun.
- 26:36Ryan: Yes.
- 26:37Kearns: technique is Chekhov's Gun, yeah.
- 26:40Ryan: I'm--
- 26:40Kearns: I had to look it up.
- 26:41It was bothering me.
- 26:41Ryan: that's fine.
- 26:42Chekhov's gun, yes.
- 26:44Kearns: About the bell is at the end is that it's the fact that
- 26:47he is a non-believer, 'cause you
- 26:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:49Kearns: thought of that.
- 26:50That's what makes him ring it, 'cause he's a
- 26:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:52Kearns: asshole.
- 26:52Jon: Yeah.
- 26:53Yeah.
- 26:54Kearns: cool.
- 26:54Jon: Like all this weird stuff just happened, but I'm a man of science.
- 26:59There's no way any of that was weird.
- 27:01It just happened.
- 27:04Mm-hmm.
- 27:06Kearns: itself is a cool movie in its simplicity.
- 27:07It doesn't really try too much trickery.
- 27:09Jon: No.
- 27:11Kearns: very kind of straightforward in
- 27:12Jon: No.
- 27:13Yeah, I don't... Really the one misdirect is like the first 15 minutes with Olin,
- 27:17Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:18Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 27:18Jon: and then it's...
- 27:19Kearns: the first jump scare, really there's not too many
- 27:21jump scares after that.
- 27:22There are some, like when she yells with that
- 27:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:25Kearns: enhanced voice
- 27:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:27Kearns: couple things with the... But the fall is tel- is, um, what
- 27:31is the word, televised in advance or
- 27:34Jon: A telegraph, telegraphed.
- 27:35Kearns: Thank you.
- 27:36We know that she's gonna fall through the hole
- 27:38Jon: Yeah.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40Ryan: I--
- 27:40Kearns: Some which she is.
- 27:42Ryan: oh yeah, true.
- 27:42She-- 'cause she's blind.
- 27:44I've-- that's a
- 27:44Jon: Yeah.
- 27:45Ryan: she tell?
- 27:45If she can walk fine of whatever power she has, why couldn't
- 27:50she tell where the hole was?
- 27:52Kearns: I think that's just la- they were just lazy in making her be blindish,
- 27:57Jon: Mm.
- 27:57Kearns: honest with you.
- 27:58I don't think
- 27:58Jon: I,
- 27:59Kearns: enhanced powers to
- 28:00Jon: I, yeah, like I, I, I don't know.
- 28:04I j- I just sort of feel like maybe at that point she had accomplished
- 28:09what she set out to accomplish,
- 28:12Kearns: It's very possible.
- 28:13Jon: she didn't really actively attempt to avoid the hole.
- 28:17'Cause she also, had to have heard him open, uh, the floor.
- 28:22Ryan: is true.
- 28:24Jon: I mean, she... It's not like, she was somewhere completely different and he did.
- 28:27She was, you know, a couple feet away.
- 28:32Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:33Kearns: was-- The fact she didn't hear it is also a little bo- I mean, I,
- 28:36that's what I said though, like the kind of movie it is, they're not trying to
- 28:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:40Kearns: not Inception.
- 28:41It's not Shutter
- 28:41Jon: No, no.
- 28:42Kearns: worry about the scrapes and stuff.
- 28:44It's like he
- 28:45Jon: yeah.
- 28:45Kearns: she didn't know was there.
- 28:46She
- 28:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:47Mm-hmm.
- 28:48Or she knew it was there and fell through the hole anyway.
- 28:51Kearns: That's possible
- 28:52Jon: Job done.
- 28:53Kearns: there like, "Eh,
- 28:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:55Kearns: along, do my bidding."
- 28:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:58Ryan: I
- 28:58Jon: Yeah.
- 28:59Kearns: so it
- 28:59Jon: She, she was playing a game,
- 29:01Ryan: she did--
- 29:02Jon: a Golem game.
- 29:03Ryan: when you see the bell in the beginning, she does put
- 29:05it in a package for delivery.
- 29:08So it's
- 29:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:09Ryan: stone from there.
- 29:10So
- 29:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:13Ryan: she knew her death.
- 29:14I mean, but I-- do you think she would know her death then?
- 29:19Jon: I mean, if she's any kind of a witch, maybe.
- 29:24Ryan: You know?
- 29:25'Cause like if sh- like
- 29:27Jon: Maybe.
- 29:27Ryan: fighting for something, like like
- 29:30Jon: Yeah.
- 29:30Ryan: through and it's like done, you know?
- 29:34Jon: But that was her game.
- 29:38Ryan: Okay.
- 29:39Jon: I have a game.
- 29:40Ryan: Ooh.
- 29:41Jon: you guys wanna play a game?
- 29:42Ryan: Yes.
- 29:43Kearns: a
- 29:43Jon: Let's play a game.
- 29:46I got... I have a game.
- 29:47It's, you know, it's our, our usual Slash or Stash.
- 29:52Usual rules apply.
- 29:54You get to stash three of them.
- 29:57You're gonna have to get rid of five, unless you guess the theme,
- 30:01then I'll let you have an extra one.
- 30:03However, if you guess it wrong, you lose one.
- 30:09So
- 30:10Kearns: Okay,
- 30:10Jon: we'll start here.
- 30:12Ryan: yeah.
- 30:14Stash.
- 30:16Kearns: Yeah, I have to stash it.
- 30:17Ryan: Like, this is
- 30:18Kearns: I have to stash it.
- 30:19It's Halloween.
- 30:20Ryan: what
- 30:20Kearns: I do
- 30:21Ryan: like slasher.
- 30:22I mean, you have Black Christmas, you have Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
- 30:25but then Halloween puts in, like,
- 30:28Kearns: have
- 30:28Ryan: the foresight.
- 30:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:31Ryan: Love John Carpenter.
- 30:32But this is,
- 30:35this is an interesting
- 30:37Jon: Any guesses?
- 30:38Ryan: That's why I'm
- 30:38Jon: Eh.
- 30:39Kearns: a guess, but I'm sitting on it until I see the next title.
- 30:43Jon: All right.
- 30:45Let's give you the next one.
- 30:46I don't think it's gonna help.
- 30:48Maybe it does.
- 30:50Kearns: reanimated killers or creatures?
- 30:52Jon: Oh, unfortunately not.
- 30:56Kearns: But those are two reanimated killers or creatures, though.
- 30:58Jon: They are.
- 30:59Although in Halloween, Michael Myers is not yet reanimated.
- 31:03Ryan: No piece of shape.
- 31:04Kearns: That's cruel.
- 31:05I,
- 31:06Jon: he's still original Michael Myers.
- 31:09He hasn't died yet.
- 31:10Yeah.
- 31:11Kearns: my second stash.
- 31:12Jon: Yeah, this is gonna get painful for you.
- 31:15Kearns: Uh, I'm happy with Halloween and Frankenstein.
- 31:18Jon: We'll
- 31:19Ryan: Mm.
- 31:19Jon: how happy.
- 31:21Kearns: I'll see who
- 31:22Jon: Ryan?
- 31:23Ryan: Well, I'm j- um, so it's hard because I'm trying to figure out if I
- 31:26wanna stash or slash, but then at the same time, I'm trying to think of the theme
- 31:30Jon: I-
- 31:31Ryan: 'cause,
- 31:31Kearns: I... It's interesting.
- 31:36Ryan: 'cause, uh, I mean, I mean, like with Halloween, he's not,
- 31:40Kearns: I
- 31:40Ryan: he's not reincarnated,
- 31:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:43Kearns: didn't say reincarnated, I said reanimated.
- 31:47Ryan: But he's not even reanimated in the first one.
- 31:50he disappears, but the idea of him disappearing is he's a shape.
- 31:54He's a part of, like, the world technically.
- 31:57With Frankenstein, it's a creation.
- 32:01Jon: He has reanimated body parts.
- 32:05Kearns: Not necessarily like Frankenstein.
- 32:07That's true.
- 32:08Ryan: I'm slashing it.
- 32:09I'm sorry.
- 32:10Sorry, Del Toro.
- 32:12Jon: Whoa.
- 32:13Kearns: So we were supposed to have three, right?
- 32:15So
- 32:15Jon: Yeah.
- 32:16Kearns: one, I've lost-- I'm down to, like, none.
- 32:18Jon: However, I mean, you can guess... Y- y- no, you can guess again, but after
- 32:23this movie, there's no more guesses, so
- 32:25Kearns: Ba bada ba pa pa
- 32:26Jon: I guess you're sort of in, an unplanned for spot where
- 32:29you get a free guess here.
- 32:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:32Ryan: what
- 32:33Kearns: But I'm out of ideas.
- 32:34Ryan: what if he guesses and he gets it, and then he gets his spot back?
- 32:38Jon: I-
- 32:38Ryan: Is that
- 32:38Jon: if...
- 32:39Kearns: probably--
- 32:39Jon: Yes, yes.
- 32:40Kearns: get
- 32:41Jon: Yeah, he'd, he'd get back,
- 32:42Kearns: one back,
- 32:43Jon: he'd get back to three.
- 32:44Yeah, he wouldn't get to two, he'd just go back to three.
- 32:47Ryan: That's
- 32:48Jon: So let's see.
- 32:49Kearns: that kind of operation.
- 32:50Jon: see if the third movie gives us something away.
- 32:53Oh, wrong way.
- 32:55Wrong way.
- 32:57Oh, wrong way.
- 32:58Ryan: oh,
- 32:59Kearns: no.
- 32:59Lots of hints.
- 33:01Oh, see, reanimated.
- 33:04I,
- 33:04Jon: There's...
- 33:07Kearns: Scientist.
- 33:10Jon: Oh, nice job, Ryan.
- 33:12They are all doctors.
- 33:15Kearns: But doctors are kinds of scientists, and I said
- 33:17that before he said doctors.
- 33:19Jon: Did you?
- 33:20Ryan: Four.
- 33:22Jon: we're gonna have to check the tape.
- 33:24Kearns: his hollow victory.
- 33:26Oh, it's there, buddy.
- 33:27I said scientist before you said doctor.
- 33:29That's okay.
- 33:29It's all good.
- 33:30Ryan: him,
- 33:31Kearns: Doctor is a better answer.
- 33:32Ryan: him his three.
- 33:33Give
- 33:34Kearns: No, I'm fine.
- 33:35fine.
- 33:36Ryan: Are you
- 33:36Jon: Well, I mean, we'll see.
- 33:38Ryan: I mean, you have
- 33:38Jon: We'll see, he might, he might legitimately be fine.
- 33:43Ryan: So I have four
- 33:44Jon: You're r- yeah, you might, you might... I feel like you might
- 33:49struggle to fill this in yourself.
- 33:51Ryan: I, so
- 33:52Kearns: Dun, dun, dun.
- 33:54Ryan: got rid of Frankenstein.
- 33:55I'm gonna keep Re-Animator.
- 33:56I do like Re-Animator.
- 33:59I do need to
- 34:00Kearns: Yeah, there we go.
- 34:01It's
- 34:01Jon: Although, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 34:04I may have to add a rule going forward because you have
- 34:07slashed Re-Animator before.
- 34:11Re-Animator might not exist in your world.
- 34:14Kearns: universe anymore.
- 34:16Jon: It might not exist in your world.
- 34:18Ryan: came out in theater.
- 34:19Jon: no, no, you can't, you can't,
- 34:21Ryan: last week.
- 34:21Jon: you can't bring a movie that you slashed out of existence.
- 34:26Yeah, you know what?
- 34:27That's a new rule going for... New r- new rule going forward.
- 34:30If you slash a movie out of existence, you have to always slash it.
- 34:37Ryan: Oh.
- 34:37Kearns: That's wild, actually.
- 34:39a really good idea.
- 34:40Jon: It's gonna w- take a lot of memory on my part.
- 34:44Kearns: Yeah, it's
- 34:45Ryan: Yeah, it
- 34:46Kearns: impossible.
- 34:47Jon: Oh.
- 34:48Ryan: I'm gonna stash it this week, though.
- 34:50Jon: Yeah, you better.
- 34:52All right, next one.
- 34:56The Amazing Dr. Giggles.
- 34:59Kearns: Yeah, this one messed me up.
- 35:00I c- still can't stand scalpels 'cause of this.
- 35:04Ryan: What's
- 35:04Jon: I love this movie.
- 35:05Ryan: or Pet Sematary?
- 35:08Kearns: Dr. Giggles.
- 35:10Pet Cemetery is pretty rough too, though, 'cause that's the Achilles tendon.
- 35:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:14Kearns: do that too.
- 35:15Ryan: Yep.
- 35:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:17Ryan: Memories.
- 35:19Jon: Well, yeah, slashing the Achilles tendon is, is
- 35:23the tool of the short killer.
- 35:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:27The Lilliputian method, we
- 35:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:32So Ryan, where do we stand on "Dr. Giggles"?
- 35:35Ryan: I'm gonna slash it.
- 35:37I'm gonna slash it
- 35:41Jon: Which makes movie number five...
- 35:44Ryan: Oh, I was waiting for currents.
- 35:45I was like, oh man, what the, what
- 35:46Jon: Yeah, no, uh, he doesn't, he doesn't have to because
- 35:48all this is out of his world.
- 35:51Kearns: sitting easy over here in my failure.
- 35:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:54Ryan: I never heard of this movie.
- 35:56Jon: You've never... Oh, man.
- 35:58Ryan: Like this
- 35:59Jon: Corbin, Corbin Bernsen as a, as a dentist falling apart.
- 36:04Ryan: I, I just gotta, I'm getting along with my dentist again.
- 36:07I can't watch a horror movie.
- 36:08It's gonna send me right back.
- 36:12Kearns: a
- 36:12Ryan: It's gonna send me right back, PTSD.
- 36:15I'm gonna slash it.
- 36:17It's a nice cover
- 36:22Jon: I just couldn't find the one I wanted.
- 36:25Next.
- 36:27Ryan: Vincent
- 36:27Kearns: new one
- 36:28Jon: Yeah.
- 36:29Ryan: movie is this?
- 36:30What, what number
- 36:31Jon: "Abominable Dr. Phibes," this is movie six.
- 36:36Ryan: And there's two more.
- 36:37Kearns: by me.
- 36:40Ryan: You never
- 36:40Jon: Oh, I love this one.
- 36:43Ryan: it's a romantic horror film.
- 36:45It's romanticism at its best.
- 36:47But I gotta slash it we talked earlier, if there's something on here, I do
- 36:53wanna s- I do wanna stash it if it's,
- 36:56Jon: Yeah.
- 36:57Ryan: on here.
- 36:57It might not be, but I'll take the chance.
- 37:00Jon: all right, we'll see if the... So you, you are in the opposite spot now.
- 37:05You have to stash these last two.
- 37:08Ryan: I'm fine with that.
- 37:09Let's see.
- 37:09Jon: All right, so... I
- 37:10Ryan: Yes, I'm fine
- 37:11Kearns: Ah,
- 37:12Ryan: fine
- 37:13Kearns: it's not bad.
- 37:13I wanna see you watch it.
- 37:14I wanna see you watch this at midnight in a sweaty room.
- 37:17I wanna
- 37:18Ryan: let's
- 37:18Jon: have
- 37:19Kearns: see it.
- 37:19I
- 37:19Ryan: Let's do it.
- 37:20Jon: to
- 37:21Kearns: wanna see you do
- 37:22Jon: t-
- 37:22Ryan: Frankenfooter.
- 37:23Jon: I, I'm not a fan.
- 37:27Ryan: No.
- 37:27Kearns: you've admitted this
- 37:29Jon: I'm not a fan.
- 37:30Kearns: the first 10 episodes.
- 37:31Ryan: you're not a
- 37:32Jon: I, I wanna be a fan.
- 37:34Yeah, that's what it is.
- 37:35I, uh, there's not many musicals that get into my brain.
- 37:39Ryan: It's Tim Curry.
- 37:40Like Tim Curry just kills it.
- 37:42Jon: "Still Alive."
- 37:43Ryan: Yes, he is.
- 37:44Kearns: Still alive.
- 37:45Ryan: The Cardinal.
- 37:47Jon: "Still Alive." And the last movie, I wonder if this is
- 37:51what you were thinking, Ryan.
- 37:54Ryan: No, but
- 37:54Kearns: Good choice
- 37:55Ryan: it.
- 37:56I thought it was Bring Her Back, you name dropped it earlier.
- 38:00I was ready.
- 38:01Jon: I didn't name drop "Bring Her Back," you did.
- 38:04Ryan: I love Bring Her Back, man.
- 38:06No, I'll accept The Fly.
- 38:07Jeff Goldblum, the, for the time, the special effects were ahead of its time.
- 38:14Jon: Blame me for bringing her back sneaking in here again.
- 38:20Kearns: Why is it even being mentioned?
- 38:21It wasn't-- It had nothing to do with
- 38:22Ryan: Next
- 38:23Kearns: it.
- 38:23Ryan: 1st, Bring Her Back.
- 38:26it.
- 38:27on the schedule.
- 38:29Kearns: On the schedule.
- 38:30Ryan: April
- 38:31Jon: The schedule.
- 38:32Kearns: Is it, Ryan?
- 38:33Ryan: 1st.
- 38:34Schedule.
- 38:35Kearns: about all that, buddy.
- 38:36Jon: The schedule.
- 38:37Ryan: Schedule Make a sandwich afterwards.
- 38:41how it goes.
- 38:41That was a good
- 38:44Kearns: All right.
- 38:44That was a good one.
- 38:45Ryan: I,
- 38:45Jon: I like that one.
- 38:46I, I like the consequences.
- 38:48I like... I, I like it when, when there's real consequences for it.
- 38:53Yeah.
- 38:54Ryan: I,
- 38:55Kearns: fun.
- 38:55Ryan: a little nervous about that.
- 38:57Jon: So one of the things I like is how much of the torment falls onto the
- 39:02most innocent of the people in Jana.
- 39:06Like, she's the one that feels all of the creepiness in that house after
- 39:10Darcy shows up with the wooden man.
- 39:12Ryan: do you really feel
- 39:13Kearns: true.
- 39:14Ryan: I, I didn't feel bad for
- 39:15Jon: I do.
- 39:16I, I do because she didn't, she didn't hurt anybody.
- 39:21You know, she probably engaged in somebody else's extramarital affair.
- 39:27It... There's no indication she was in a relationship when
- 39:30they, she and Ted got together.
- 39:32That... You can't... Like, that, that's like re- daytime talk show
- 39:38logic where you get mad at the person your, your spouse was cheating
- 39:42with, not your spouse who did it.
- 39:47You want, you wanna fight the other woman all the time or the
- 39:50other man all the time, but that's not the one who did anything.
- 39:53Ryan: we're going the Maury Povich way, not the Jerry Springer way.
- 39:56Got it
- 39:58Jon: I mean- That's who you should be mad at.
- 40:01Like, but poor Jana get... Like she finds the camera with the creepy pictures.
- 40:06She's dealing with the wooden man and Darcy who, y- you know, I don't
- 40:13know how she is in her real life, but once she gets to that house,
- 40:16Darcy's a pretty creepy person too.
- 40:18Just sort of sitting, staring unseeingly and, you know, into the
- 40:23void, and only really broken up by some awkward conversation and a yell.
- 40:28Ryan: She had a plan though, but that's, I feel like that's why.
- 40:32But she had to be like that because of all the anger and the resentment she had
- 40:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:38Ryan: I feel like you see the real her when she's in the oddity shop
- 40:41where she's in her comfort zone.
- 40:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:44Ryan: You know, a little more
- 40:45Jon: Well,
- 40:47Ryan: I,
- 40:49Kearns: wild place
- 40:49Jon: I mean, if you're, if you're a witch, that's probably where it would be.
- 40:53Ryan: Yep.
- 40:54Jon: But I, I also feel like there's an element of fact-finding in her,
- 40:59the time she spends with Darcy.
- 41:02Where, with, with Jana rather, that Darcy spends with Jana, where she's,
- 41:05um, sort of assessing what Jana's involvement in Danny's death is.
- 41:13And like, do, do I need for Jana to go too or am I just
- 41:20directing this at Ted and Ivan?
- 41:23Ryan: Yeah, I can
- 41:23Kearns: That she cares enough not to be like a complete psychopath
- 41:27and just kill everybody.
- 41:28It's kinda nice.
- 41:29Ryan: She's got
- 41:30Jon: I, I... Well, yeah.
- 41:33I mean, k- and she's, like she's a very sympathetic character, not just
- 41:38the blindness, but the... I mean, it's, it seems pretty clear that
- 41:43that's her human connection, you know?
- 41:46That it's her and her sister, and that, that's like all Darcy h- really had.
- 41:52Ryan: Yeah.
- 41:52Jon: never mention other family.
- 41:54There's no indication that, that Darcy has a, a spouse or a significant other.
- 42:01It seems like it's the antique shop and Danny.
- 42:06Ryan: I feel like that's alluded in the beginning too when she wants
- 42:09her to come over for dinner and
- 42:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:11Ryan: trying to
- 42:12Kearns: He
- 42:16Ryan: and Danny's just like, "No, we should have her
- 42:18over. She's alone and stuff."
- 42:22Jon: Yeah.
- 42:23Yeah.
- 42:24And, you know, Ted is largely opposed to Darcy ever coming to that
- 42:28house, and then Darcy just shows.
- 42:32Like, "Nah,
- 42:33Ryan: he
- 42:34Jon: I'm coming anyway."
- 42:35Ryan: invited her kind-
- 42:36Jon: Yeah, kind of.
- 42:39In, in, you know, in the, in the sort of way you invite s- anybody you
- 42:43don't really wanna come over, over.
- 42:45Like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, when everything sort of clears up, we'll have you over."
- 42:51You know, the
- 42:52Kearns: Boy, should put an end to putting on airs and, and
- 42:55formalities like that, being nice.
- 42:58No, just say
- 42:58Jon: Absolutely.
- 43:00Absolutely.
- 43:01Kearns: anymore.
- 43:02Ha.
- 43:04Jon: Nah, you know what?
- 43:06It, I don't want you to come to my house.
- 43:08The, uh, there's nothing there for you.
- 43:11I'll send you your sister's things and...
- 43:14Ryan: This is, you know, of strawberries.
- 43:17Kearns: Pours her ashes all over her items and ships them in a trunk.
- 43:21Can we talk about the fact that they live in a castle real quick?
- 43:26Like, who has a stone house?
- 43:28Jon: That place is awesome.
- 43:29Ryan: beautiful.
- 43:31Jon: awesome.
- 43:32Kearns: awesome.
- 43:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:34Oh, definitely.
- 43:36Ryan: you think, mm, I mean, how much oil you think?
- 43:40Jon: That place is cold in July.
- 43:44Ryan: Which is
- 43:44Jon: Yeah, it,
- 43:45Kearns: know
- 43:46Jon: it's 100...
- 43:46Kearns: how...
- 43:47Jon: That's the kind of place that's cold all the time.
- 43:51Kearns: How do you keep it-- Yeah, how do you keep it from being drafty?
- 43:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:54Kearns: don't know.
- 43:55And the vaulted ceilings and stuff too.
- 43:58Yes.
- 43:59Let's get some reviews.
- 44:00I wanna see what other people thought about this Irish gem.
- 44:03Jon: All right.
- 44:04We,
- 44:04Kearns: gem
- 44:05Jon: we can...
- 44:06Ryan: Can we, can we do bad reviews first?
- 44:08'Cause,
- 44:09Jon: Do you wanna do the bad ones first?
- 44:11Ryan: hear what people negatively said about this, 'cause I feel like
- 44:16nothing really negative Not saying it's a five out of five, but I
- 44:19don't feel like it's not, it's not a bad movie to deserve a negative,
- 44:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:23Ryan: star or a
- 44:25Jon: Okay.
- 44:25Kearns: a nostalgia
- 44:26Jon: Okay.
- 44:26Kearns: reminds me in a way of like Sinister and how it
- 44:29pulls off something that you
- 44:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:31Kearns: in a while, and I
- 44:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:32Kearns: feeling watching a
- 44:33Jon: Yep.
- 44:33Yep.
- 44:34So this is 96% with the critics
- 44:38Ryan: Cool.
- 44:41Jon: audience, and as Ryan requested, we'll start with the one star.
- 44:45We'll start with the half star.
- 44:47Ryan: Oh,
- 44:49Jon: half star.
- 44:51This was one of the dumbest, most boring horror movies I've seen in a while.
- 44:57Just stupid.
- 45:00I did not find this scary in the least.
- 45:03While I cared absolutely nothing for the main characters, it was
- 45:06still easy to predict the outcome.
- 45:09I found the Golem to be a needless plot driver that made me laugh.
- 45:14He sat at the dinner table like a fuming Pinocchio with his dumb mouth
- 45:20wide open, like he's trying to swallow an extra large 12-inch sub from
- 45:26Harris Teeter on cheap sub Mondays.
- 45:30Kearns: Whoa, guys.
- 45:34Jon: This movie sucked, and in no way lives up to the hype.
- 45:40Please avoid at all costs.
- 45:44Go see Black Phone 2 instead.
- 45:47Ryan: Re-really?
- 45:49Kearns: now we know the real agenda.
- 45:50The real agenda is to drive people to Blackphone 2.
- 45:56Oh, man.
- 45:58Jon: Yeah.
- 46:00That's a rough one.
- 46:01Kearns: That's-- That was a tough one.
- 46:02Yeah, I'm glad we got that out of the way early.
- 46:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:05Well, here y-
- 46:06Ryan: on that.
- 46:07That would've been horrible.
- 46:09Jon: here's the one star.
- 46:11Absolute dialogue and actions that would never exist.
- 46:15I'd excuse that if it was fun, but not at all.
- 46:20Elephant in the room?
- 46:21How about a lifelike dummy?
- 46:25Let's sh-- He's missing?
- 46:28No reception?
- 46:30Dude, if there is a noise in the house, you go outside.
- 46:34I want a realistic movie where there is a haunting and the family goes
- 46:39outside in the street, calls the cops.
- 46:43Viewers learn this.
- 46:44Lean into the investigation.
- 46:48Blind people have third s- third senses.
- 46:51Why call the police when you can call anyone and everyone else?
- 46:59Kearns: guess there you have it.
- 47:01Ryan: just call the police.
- 47:02It's okay.
- 47:03Jon: Call the police.
- 47:05Kearns: the police against magical creatures and stuff.
- 47:07You've seen the
- 47:08Jon: Mm. Yeah.
- 47:10Kearns: mad at you
- 47:11Jon: You're only supposed to call the cops when you see Tupac.
- 47:20Kearns: I mean, that technically would be a magical creature now, wouldn't it?
- 47:22Ryan: Yep.
- 47:23Jon: Uh, yeah.
- 47:23Well, maybe.
- 47:24Depe- it depends if you believe he's dead or not
- 47:27Ryan: Do you
- 47:27Kearns: I,
- 47:28Ryan: dead?
- 47:29Jon: Yes, I do.
- 47:31Yeah.
- 47:32Kearns: peeled him
- 47:32Jon: Yeah.
- 47:34Yeah.
- 47:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 47:36Jon: All right, so let, let's end on a, on a positive five-star review.
- 47:41Ryan: Five
- 47:41Kearns: Okie dokie.
- 47:43Jon: "One of the best horrors I've seen in a long time.
- 47:46Tense, atmospheric, and has a few scares that really got me.
- 47:52And as a horror fan, I usually see these jump scare from mile away.
- 47:57100% recommended if you're into horror."
- 48:02Kearns: a great
- 48:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:04Kearns: movie.
- 48:05Jon: Yeah.
- 48:06Kearns: what do you think it deserves?
- 48:07Ryan: I think it deserves four out of five stars.
- 48:12It's
- 48:12Kearns: That s- seems reasonable to me.
- 48:14Ryan: a five out of five.
- 48:15I believe, like, with Holcomb coming out, he's grown as a director, he's
- 48:21grown as a writer, and I would hope that would be the five out of five.
- 48:25He'll probably be a 4.5 out of five he's still working up.
- 48:29But Oddity hits all the points.
- 48:31It's suspenseful.
- 48:32The music's great.
- 48:34I do enjoy the writing.
- 48:36You know, the characters are good.
- 48:37You know who's good.
- 48:38You know who's bad.
- 48:39You know the agenda.
- 48:41It, works, and I can't wait to see more from him after Holcomb 'cause I
- 48:47Kearns: Good job.
- 48:47Really
- 48:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:47Kearns: job.
- 48:48Ryan: going, he's really going into, like, the folklore and a lot
- 48:53of the old stories, which I like.
- 48:54Kearns: It was nice, it's nice to see that
- 48:59Ryan: the music and the suspense.
- 49:01Like, a
- 49:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:04Ryan: or gory be suspenseful or to be scary.
- 49:08It's c- always... Or it can always be in the music or just what the characters
- 49:13are doing or what's going on in the background, and he does nail it.
- 49:19Kearns: there's hope for these newer directors and writers to be able to
- 49:26bring that- pay homage to the old style of horror, um, but in a modern day.
- 49:31And I thought it was gonna die.
- 49:33About 10 years ago, I really did think that we didn't have much
- 49:35hope for any great filmmaking in the future in the way that it
- 49:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:39Kearns: what's it going to-- what's the evolution gonna look like?
- 49:42This, if it's this, that's great.
- 49:45Um, it's a little thin for me as far as how deep things go, but
- 49:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:52Kearns: It doesn't have to be deep, and this kind of proves that.
- 49:55I like movies that go deeper, but it doesn't need to.
- 49:57It, it throws a golem at you.
- 49:58It throws an evil eye at you.
- 49:59It's like, "Witchcraft is real," and, you know, it, it goes in that direction,
- 50:04and you just-- Once you realize that, as long as you shut yourself up and just
- 50:07enjoy the movie, it's a great watch.
- 50:09Four out of five is what I give it, too.
- 50:11I think it was just a great time.
- 50:13Welcome surprise.
- 50:14Jon: Yeah.
- 50:15Yeah.
- 50:15Wow.
- 50:16This never happens, guys, but I- I'm, I'm gonna say it's a four also.
- 50:22Ryan: Yeah, this
- 50:23Jon: We, we-- Yeah, we never all agree
- 50:26Ryan: do this.
- 50:27Kearns: What you
- 50:29Jon: but yeah, I mean, for the reasons you guys said, it, you know,
- 50:32it, it's not a fully unique vision.
- 50:36You can pick up some notes of some other stuff.
- 50:39But the way McCarthy pulls it all together, he then pulls these
- 50:43ideas in and makes it work, and then pays it off at the end.
- 50:49You know, y- you get that, you get that flash at the end where
- 50:52Ted's gonna get away with it.
- 50:54That, you know, Darcy's dead, Yana moved out, Ivan is hospitalized and likely
- 51:01to stay in some sort of either prison or mental facility for the rest of his
- 51:08life, and Ted's just sort of being Ted.
- 51:12And, you know, it's the final development of the character of this
- 51:17guy who he thinks he knows more than everybody, and he has to ring that bell.
- 51:23And that, that's, that's where it gets that fourth, the four stars for me, is
- 51:26just wrapping it up tightly like that.
- 51:29Like the messages and stuff, that's fine 'cause, I mean, like, you know,
- 51:34if you, if you love Romero, like, you... There's messages in everything
- 51:39he's ever done, you know, whether...
- 51:42Kearns: to like keep it so that you don't make the message the movie.
- 51:46Jon: Yeah.
- 51:47Kearns: the part.
- 51:47You've gotta remember to story tell, and like Ryan was saying, like getting
- 51:51so in-- like pulled into like the, the cuts and the lighting and the sound and
- 51:55Jon: Yeah.
- 51:56Kearns: pieces and stuff, if you remember the fundamentals of telling
- 51:59a story and you have the talent,
- 52:01Ryan: Yep.
- 52:01Kearns: those
- 52:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:02Kearns: to it, and then the message is like that beautiful layer on top,
- 52:05and when it's done right, you feel it.
- 52:07Um, I, just kinda like feel like that's the key to being happy
- 52:13and watching it too, like you're saying, not to overanalyze.
- 52:16But it's so hard once you become in the know.
- 52:19Like, like Ryan, I stopped reading for a long time.
- 52:22I was reading like 30 books a year, I s-
- 52:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:25Kearns: I started like thinking about it all the time, it fucking
- 52:28Ryan: Yeah.
- 52:28Kearns: have any appeal to me whatsoever to read anymore.
- 52:31Ryan: You c- you, you kinda like, it's not falling out of love, it's just
- 52:33like you need the break, and it hurt
- 52:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 52:36Ryan: like uh, I'm behind on a lot of sh- movies because of it, because it's like
- 52:42I just like... It helped me, but it also
- 52:45Jon: Mm-hmm,
- 52:46Ryan: because it's like I went to see Inception with a date.
- 52:50She fell asleep, and I'm there like watching it, analyzing it like, are
- 52:55we doing here?" Like the thimble in this, and what dream are we in, and
- 52:59Jon: mm-hmm.
- 53:00Ryan: And you know what?
- 53:02That leads us into our top five for tonight.
- 53:05And our top five, or at least for me, films that are suspenseful, that
- 53:12make me jump, and have stuck with me.
- 53:16And I know this list is gonna keep changing, but talking with
- 53:20Jada, and to start it off, it's a movie that we actually watch.
- 53:23It's to find.
- 53:25It, it used to be on Netflix, and then they removed it, and I think
- 53:28I recommended it to you guys, uh, last year, and then they removed it.
- 53:32It's a movie called Ghostland.
- 53:33We'll start it off.
- 53:35It's about a, uh, a mother and two daughters.
- 53:37They're traveling to, uh, a house that they inherited, and they run
- 53:40into this candy truck, and this candy truck is this, ah, it's, it's
- 53:49interesting person driving the truck.
- 53:51I, I can't really describe, but the big guy with her or him is a big baby-ish
- 53:58person, and they're serial killers.
- 54:00And what happens is they put these two girls and the mom through so much trauma.
- 54:04The mom dies, and the sisters are rescued.
- 54:07But throughout the whole movie, you get the suspense of going
- 54:11back and forth between their trauma as well as the current time
- 54:16what is real and what is unreal?
- 54:18And that's how I'm going to leave it because I don't want to spoil anything.
- 54:21There's a lot of curves and twists, and it's definitely a good watch, which
- 54:24leads to my number four, which I will definitely spoil, and that's Joyride.
- 54:29Chris Walker, you know, sorry, Paul Walker, Steve Zahn, Leelee
- 54:34Sobieski, directed by John
- 54:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:39Ryan: It's an enjoyable ride.
- 54:40You got Ted Levine, too, as, like, the voice of the main killer.
- 54:45I want to say Sea Bass.
- 54:47It's not Sea Bass.
- 54:50That's the guy from Dumb and Dumber.
- 54:52It's Rusty Nail.
- 54:54It's a movie.
- 54:56I always get suspense.
- 54:57I've seen it a million times, but, tractor trailers are scary.
- 55:02You know, since the days of, oh, we just talked about it the
- 55:07other week, Maximum Overdrive.
- 55:10Trucks scare me.
- 55:11And now to have, like, someone, a human behind the truck doing all this chaos,
- 55:16it's like suspense after suspense.
- 55:18And that leads into number three, Death Proof.
- 55:21Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson.
- 55:25You got a whole list.
- 55:27McGowan, Zoe Bell.
- 55:30I mean, it starts off fast-paced.
- 55:32Kurt Russell plays Stuntman Mike.
- 55:35He's a killer stuntman with a killer car, basically does all his killing.
- 55:40But the suspense really builds up in the last 30 minutes of the film
- 55:44when we have this insane car chase with Zoe Bell on the hood of the car.
- 55:48And she's a real stuntwoman.
- 55:50Tarantino directed and written.
- 55:53how he shoots it where you see her almost flying off, grasping the car.
- 55:58You're at the edge of your seat because you don't know what's going to happen.
- 56:00Is she going to
- 56:01Kearns: Right.
- 56:02Ryan: not going to make it?
- 56:03And just all over the place.
- 56:05But number two, I mean, over the place too with it.
- 56:09And that's The Hitcher.
- 56:11Rucker Hauer, C. Thomas Howell.
- 56:14I just watched it for the first time, I think it was last year.
- 56:19And on the edge of my seat.
- 56:21I didn't expect anything.
- 56:22And, I mean, I was rooting for Rucker Hauer.
- 56:26I'm a Rucker Hauer fan, even though he's sadistic in it.
- 56:29just like, what is he going to do next?
- 56:31How is he going to put C. Thomas Howell more danger, into more terror?
- 56:37And you're like, to see more.
- 56:39And that leads to my number one, the top of the suspense films.
- 56:43And that's John Carpenter's The Thing.
- 56:46You're on the edge of your seat for the entire movie.
- 56:49You don't know who's who.
- 56:52You know, a great film.
- 56:54I know we're going to be covering it.
- 56:56I got to wave my flag for The Thing.
- 56:59I love it.
- 57:01That's my top
- 57:01Jon: Nice.
- 57:02Kearns: one.
- 57:03One of the best.
- 57:04Jon: Yeah.
- 57:05Ryan: Hey, y'all.
- 57:06Kearns: Cliffhanger ending masterclass.
- 57:08Ryan: Listen, John showed me a nice Mac Ready figure today, action figure.
- 57:14I might, I might do it.
- 57:16He
- 57:17Jon: You should.
- 57:18Ryan: it.
- 57:19Jon: You should.
- 57:19Ryan: He's got the whiskey in
- 57:20Kearns: Nice
- 57:21Ryan: But what's your top five?
- 57:23What is your
- 57:23Jon: Well, I took my top five inspiration from "The Bell and the Wooden Man" and
- 57:29I went with top five cursed objects.
- 57:33Ryan: Ooh.
- 57:34Jon: I'm, gonna preface this with I went a little deeper than, you know,
- 57:39again, "Evil Dead", "Hellraiser", you know, things where they're... The, the
- 57:44more mainstream ones I mostly avoided.
- 57:47Ryan: Okay.
- 57:48Jon: So my number five is gonna be a cursed car tire, and it's rubber
- 57:54Ryan: Yes.
- 57:56That got referenced a couple days ago.
- 57:58Jon: yeah.
- 57:59Uh, so Rubber is Quentin Dupieux's absurd killer tire movie, and
- 58:05it's one of the strangest movies you'll ever find for no reason.
- 58:09a cursed tire rolls around the desert on a murderous rampage for no reason,
- 58:14while spectators watch to watch the film that is being... they believe to
- 58:19be being made out of a murderous tire.
- 58:24the tire has psychokinetic powers and it, you know, makes things blow up and die.
- 58:32S- you know, it's right up there.
- 58:34Ryan: That's everything you want out of a rubber.
- 58:38Jon: Yeah, a little Scanners, a little, little Maximum
- 58:42Overdrive, I guess, it's a tire.
- 58:44Um,
- 58:45Kearns: tire.
- 58:46Jon: but he, he... Yeah, it's really not mu- like much you've ever seen.
- 58:52As... It's, yeah.
- 58:55Uh, number four we're gonna go with really, really early, uh, Guillermo
- 59:00del Toro, and that's Cronos.
- 59:02Ryan: Ooh, Cronosis, that's a good film.
- 59:06Jon: Mm. This is one we could do, we could do a lot of the history around it, too.
- 59:11as the Inquisition spreads to the New World, an alchemist creates a device
- 59:16called Cronos that can grant eternal life.
- 59:20400 years later, an antiques dealer comes into possession of the statue that houses
- 59:26the device and begins to feel its effects.
- 59:29Before long, others want to gain possession for themselves.
- 59:34Ryan: You wanna know something?
- 59:35Someone categorized it as somewhat of a vampire film, I can
- 59:39Jon: Yeah.
- 59:39Ryan: it, but I can't, if that makes
- 59:42Jon: I mean,
- 59:43Ryan: the scarab.
- 59:44Jon: I mean, the, the, the eternal life thing, too.
- 59:46Like that's, you know, eternal life, vampires, that's very vampiric.
- 59:53Kearns: vampires,
- 59:54Jon: Eh.
- 59:54Kearns: does it suck the life out of anything to stay alive
- 59:57or to, to make you live?
- 1:00:01Do you vampirize?
- 1:00:03It's not really...
- 1:00:05Jon: It's... It, it's a similar world, I think, maybe, but it's not.
- 1:00:11Kearns: Not quite there.
- 1:00:12Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:13Kearns: goes right to, you know, the Titan and all that time,
- 1:00:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:16Kearns: life, good stuff.
- 1:00:18Jon: my number three I don't think we will confuse for a vampire movie
- 1:00:23in any way, shape, or form, and it- John Carpenter's showing up in my
- 1:00:26top five tonight, and it's Christine.
- 1:00:29Kearns: Nice.
- 1:00:31Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:32Kearns: Carpentry King.
- 1:00:34Jon: yeah, John Carpenter, Stephen King adaptation.
- 1:00:36A cursed 1958 red Plymouth Fury, uh, 21 years after its fatal beginning
- 1:00:43Arnie acquires Christine and begins to restore the car, all the while
- 1:00:48transforming himself as he does the car, which then goes on a murderous
- 1:00:54rampage, eliminating any threats.
- 1:00:59Ryan: I like
- 1:01:00Kearns: That's a pretty cool...
- 1:01:01Jon: Christine's a good movie.
- 1:01:03Ryan: I, I feel like it's such an interesting pick for John Carpenter
- 1:01:06out of all the Stephen King novels.
- 1:01:08Like, imagine him
- 1:01:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:09Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:09Ryan: of the Corn
- 1:01:12Kearns: That would've been cool.
- 1:01:13Ryan: of, like,
- 1:01:13Jon: Yeah,
- 1:01:13Ryan: the Damned, you know?
- 1:01:15Jon: I b- I would've liked to have seen that instead of Village of the Damned.
- 1:01:21I'm not a fan of Village of the Damned.
- 1:01:24Ryan: Really?
- 1:01:26Jon: yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:28Yeah.
- 1:01:29Ryan: Okay.
- 1:01:29Kearns: I'll say The Damned was cool for the first three and a half minutes.
- 1:01:32Ryan: I
- 1:01:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:33Ryan: yeah,
- 1:01:34Jon: And it, it, it's also, it's also, like, remake-y, and the original black
- 1:01:39and white one was creepier, I thought.
- 1:01:42Ryan: Fair on that.
- 1:01:43Thought the kids were creepier too.
- 1:01:45Jon: Yeah, and that's what it is.
- 1:01:47The kids have to be creepier for that movie to work, and
- 1:01:51the original was creepier.
- 1:01:53my number two is an also a movie that got remade.
- 1:01:58It's a cursed VHS tape.
- 1:02:01It's Ringu, the Japanese original version of The Ring.
- 1:02:06Kearns: Which I did watch back in the day.
- 1:02:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:09Kearns: I feel cool
- 1:02:10Jon: Yep.
- 1:02:11Kearns: watching Ringu.
- 1:02:13Jon: Right?
- 1:02:13Like, it's kind of fun to be able to say, "All right, that's the American version,
- 1:02:17but did you see the Japanese one?"
- 1:02:20Ryan: I
- 1:02:20Kearns: It was, it's like very Brooklyn of you, like, "Oh, yeah,
- 1:02:23Jon: yeah.
- 1:02:24Kearns: that?"
- 1:02:25Ryan: was a Japanese version.
- 1:02:27Jon: You didn't know Ring was a Japanese...
- 1:02:29Ryan: I
- 1:02:30Jon: A remake of a Japanese movie?
- 1:02:31Ryan: I
- 1:02:32Jon: No.
- 1:02:33Ryan: The Grudge was Japanese, but I
- 1:02:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:35Ryan: like, an American answer.
- 1:02:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:38Ryan: that's
- 1:02:38Jon: No, no, R- yeah.
- 1:02:40The R-
- 1:02:41Kearns: off Japanese stuff left and right
- 1:02:43Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:44Kearns: era.
- 1:02:44Jon: mean, the, the Japanese got so far down the grudge in Ring, uh, Ringu
- 1:02:51ju online that they had a crossover movie with the two spirits facing off.
- 1:02:56Ryan: I wanna see that.
- 1:02:58Jon: It was on Shudder for a while.
- 1:03:01Kearns: sci-fi version right there if I've ever heard one.
- 1:03:03Jon: anyway, after the death of f- after the des- death of her niece, Reiko, a
- 1:03:07reporter, sets out to find out the true cause of death, but watches the tape
- 1:03:13herself, which puts her on a seven-day timer to solve the mystery of the tape and
- 1:03:19save herself and her child who watches it.
- 1:03:25Kearns: That's the, the stakes get significantly higher
- 1:03:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:28Yep.
- 1:03:29Ryan: the-- the kid doesn't watch it in the American one, right?
- 1:03:33Jon: No, I think the kid does
- 1:03:34Kearns: the kid does see it in
- 1:03:36Ryan: Okay.
- 1:03:36Kearns: American one.
- 1:03:36She freaks out about it.
- 1:03:38We watched that movie at my buddy's house, actually the buddy
- 1:03:41who lived on RFK's property then.
- 1:03:45Might have to cut that out.
- 1:03:46Don't wanna flip anybody out about that.
- 1:03:48But, uh,
- 1:03:49Jon: I mean, listen, listen, you and I grew up in an area where
- 1:03:52that, you know, that was just there.
- 1:03:54It wasn't, it's not a political...
- 1:03:56Kearns: the guy.
- 1:03:57to play, uh, manhunt with the guy.
- 1:03:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:59Um,
- 1:04:00Kearns: It was wild.
- 1:04:01Jon: I went to a fundraiser at that house.
- 1:04:03Kearns: yeah.
- 1:04:04Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:04Kearns: you remember like anything about the property at all?
- 1:04:06There was a graveyard, but that was a little further back.
- 1:04:08There was a
- 1:04:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:09Kearns: where my buddy lived.
- 1:04:11Real creepy looking spot at night, and we spent
- 1:04:13Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:13Kearns: at that house at
- 1:04:14Jon: Yeah, I wasn't there at night, but you, I, I can kinda see
- 1:04:17where it would be creepy at night.
- 1:04:19Kearns: We watched The Ring in his second story of his house, and in his
- 1:04:23room that was the size of a closet, and
- 1:04:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:25Kearns: left with the DVD in there, and we got... Like, we went to
- 1:04:30get beer, came back to the house, and we pull in and it's blasting.
- 1:04:34The volume is like two... Like maxed out, and we're just seeing all the light coming
- 1:04:40out of the window of the room and hearing the sound from The Ring DVD frigging
- 1:04:44menu, and we were just like, "Oh, no.
- 1:04:46No, no,
- 1:04:47Jon: Nope.
- 1:04:47Kearns: There's
- 1:04:48Jon: Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
- 1:04:49Kearns: "All right, well, I'm gonna grab this 30 rack and we're gonna
- 1:04:51walk up there." And so we did.
- 1:04:55But we still can't explain why, why it was so loud.
- 1:04:57We can figure why the menu would start.
- 1:04:59DVD players did that all the time, the volume being maxed.
- 1:05:03Maybe a cat like stepped on a remote or something.
- 1:05:05Ryan: The, all the volume, the, for the DVD menus were always
- 1:05:08louder than the actual DVD itself.
- 1:05:11Kearns: I mean, maxed out on the TV.
- 1:05:13Like, no way we were watching it at that volume.
- 1:05:16Yeah.
- 1:05:18It was...
- 1:05:18Ryan: don't...
- 1:05:20Kearns: the creeps thinking about it.
- 1:05:22It was one of those good memories where it's like, I don't
- 1:05:23know if I wanna do this, man.
- 1:05:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:26Ryan: Do we get the 30-rack?
- 1:05:27All right, let's go.
- 1:05:29Kearns: Let's get up there and just die, I guess.
- 1:05:31Ryan: Seven days.
- 1:05:33Kearns: Is that your
- 1:05:34Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:34Kearns: one?
- 1:05:35Jon: No, that was number two.
- 1:05:36My number one is a Dutch masterpiece called "The Lift."
- 1:05:42Ryan: The
- 1:05:43Kearns: the lift.
- 1:05:44Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:45Kearns: heard of it.
- 1:05:45What a-
- 1:05:46Ryan: neither.
- 1:05:48Jon: in Dick Maas' "The Lift," the cursed object is something many people fear.
- 1:05:54Yeah, I know.
- 1:05:55I know Dick Maas.
- 1:05:57Kearns: I mean, we could go, we could do a whole episode on that name.
- 1:06:00Jon: Uh, we should be doing episodes on some of his movies too.
- 1:06:04Kearns: collects no moss.
- 1:06:06You
- 1:06:06Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:09Yeah.
- 1:06:09So the cursed object i-in "The Lift" is something that pe- something that people
- 1:06:16fear in e-everyday life to begin with
- 1:06:19Ryan: The elevator?
- 1:06:19Jon: elevators.
- 1:06:20It's elevators, yep.
- 1:06:22Um, after numerous incidents including the decapitation of a security guard,
- 1:06:28a repairman is called in, but he is unable to identify the problem.
- 1:06:33As the elevator continues its spree, the repairman is joined
- 1:06:38by a reporter to investigate the company that built the elevator.
- 1:06:42Ryan: Okay, so is it a super electronic elevator?
- 1:06:47Jon: It's just an everyday, you know, luxury building a p- a building elevator.
- 1:06:53Ryan: Thinking of a season one episode of "The X-Files" with a similar concept.
- 1:06:57When was the movie made?
- 1:06:59Jon: Before "The X-Files".
- 1:07:00Ryan: That says... Okay, so "The X-Files"
- 1:07:02Jon: It was '80s, yeah.
- 1:07:05Ryan: It sounds like a good concept, but I'm wondering if it's,
- 1:07:07like, computer or demon, but...
- 1:07:13Jon: You'll have to watch.
- 1:07:14There's also an American remake of this.
- 1:07:17Ryan: Devil?
- 1:07:18Jon: No, I forgot... It's something, it's another play on elevators in the title.
- 1:07:25And it's also Dick Maas, he did the American remake too.
- 1:07:29Ryan: Oh, that's cool.
- 1:07:30So he, Dick Moss remade his own film.
- 1:07:33Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:34Yeah.
- 1:07:34Ryan: that's- it's rare when directors do that.
- 1:07:37Hitchcock did that.
- 1:07:39Jon: even weirder, it just dawned on me because he remade it with Naomi Watts,
- 1:07:44Ryan: Huh.
- 1:07:45Jon: who was in "The Ring" remake.
- 1:07:47Kearns: Yeah, just gonna say, that was one of her claim to fame
- 1:07:50Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:50Yeah, that didn't occur to me until just now.
- 1:07:54Ryan: Dick Moss.
- 1:07:55Kearns: Ooh, Dick Moss.
- 1:07:57Jon: Dick Maas.
- 1:08:00Yeah.
- 1:08:01Ryan: That's a lot of
- 1:08:02Jon: I figured you guys would enjoy the name too.
- 1:08:04Kearns: be our number one.
- 1:08:05Yeah,
- 1:08:06Jon: Dutch master.
- 1:08:07Kearns: both...
- 1:08:07Jon: Dutch, Dutch master Dick Maas.
- 1:08:12Kearns: That is Oddity, everybody.
- 1:08:14Jon: That is.
- 1:08:15Kearns: you haven't seen Dick Moss, I mean Oddity, get out there and see it
- 1:08:19Ryan: Definitely watch
- 1:08:20Kearns: for sure.
- 1:08:21Ryan: Come on.
- 1:08:23Jon: it, it, it's on, what?
- 1:08:25Hulu and Disney?
- 1:08:26Ryan: Yep.
- 1:08:27Kearns: Yeah, easily accessible.
- 1:08:28Well, 20 bucks a month now for Disney Plus.
- 1:08:30We have to talk about it.
- 1:08:32All right, guys.
- 1:08:32Well, everybody, before we end up getting canceled, let's finish the episode.
- 1:08:37That was Oddity, everybody.
- 1:08:38Hope you enjoyed.
- 1:08:39Ryan: Have a good one, guys.
- 1:08:42Jon: Hey, ya
