- 0:59Speaker 2: Several high school games last night trying to dodge the weather,
- 1:02Speaker 2: but it looks like the weather dodged everybody because there's
- 1:04Speaker 2: supposed to be a fairly dry track around the state.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Make it a little rain tonight as we'll get into
- 1:09Speaker 2: some high school football today. Brought to you by Mississippi

- 2:14Speaker 2: as they are less than 24 hours to kick off
- 2:19Speaker 2: in Starkville as Alabama will travel over in the morning.
- 2:23Speaker 2: They will not come over this afternoon. They're going to
- 2:24Speaker 2: just make the day trip. And I've got some thoughts
- 2:27Speaker 2: on that because we have seen teams try to do that,
- 2:31Speaker 2: and sometimes it doesn't work out too well on the
- 2:32Speaker 2: day trips. And one of those was Mississippi State. And
- 2:35Speaker 2: we'll have Rafael Esparza coming in at four. And who
- 2:38Speaker 2: knows who else may roll in here. Beeb, I know
- 2:39Speaker 2: that you've got to work tonight, so you've got a
- 2:42Speaker 2: long day ahead of you. Did we walk today? We'll
- 2:46Speaker 2: say Beeb didn't walk today. Maybe he's walking right now.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Let's walk on over here to the notes. All right.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Note from yesterday. Reminder, now that football kicked off last night,
- 2:59Speaker 2: There's a college football or NFL game every single day
- 3:02Speaker 2: for the next 61 days, and that started yesterday. The
- 3:05Speaker 2: fun kicks off with yesterday or kicked off with Western
- 3:08Speaker 2: Kentucky and New Mexico State, North Texas, and Tulsa. So
- 3:11Speaker 2: get up as you got football every day. NFL, college, Maction,
- 3:15Speaker 2: all the things. Now all the way for the next
- 3:19Speaker 2: 60 days, 61 as of yesterday. College football television ratings
- 3:23Speaker 2: are down 11% for the first month of the 2025 season, but.
- 3:27Speaker 2: A source with knowledge of Disney's viewership data tells Andy
- 3:31Speaker 2: Staples the SEC minutes watched are up 41% year over year.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We'll get into this story and kind of dive into
- 3:40Speaker 2: some of these TV numbers on why maybe they're down,
- 3:41Speaker 2: but they're up in some other places as well. 4-0
- 3:45Speaker 2: UMass has sold out. Can you believe UMass is 4-0?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Remember they got that week one win over Rutgers? They
- 3:49Speaker 2: were like a 23 or 31 point underdog. They're 4-0.
- 3:53Speaker 2: They have sold out its football game against Eastern Michigan
- 3:56Speaker 2: this weekend. It's the first sellout in 12 years for
- 3:59Speaker 2: the Minutemen, who are chasing their first ever bowl game.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So UMass trying to get bowl eligible for the first
- 4:07Speaker 2: time in the history of the program. Also, earlier today,
- 4:11Speaker 2: CBS and Tony Romo have officially parted ways. So Tony
- 4:15Speaker 2: Romo out at CBS, and there is a statement here
- 4:18Speaker 2: from Romo that says, quote, I'm proud of what I
- 4:21Speaker 2: accomplished at CBS sports over the last nine years. I
- 4:24Speaker 2: approached my role as a game analyst, the way I've
- 4:27Speaker 2: approached everything in my life with a desire to win
- 4:30Speaker 2: and to be the best that I can be. I'm
- 4:32Speaker 2: going to use this time to take a break, something
- 4:34Speaker 2: I've never done before and focused on my health and
- 4:36Speaker 2: my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I
- 4:39Speaker 2: am grateful for my time with CBS sports and for
- 4:41Speaker 2: the continued support of my family and friends as well
- 4:45Speaker 2: as the NFL community and fans. So Tony Romo, uh,
- 4:49Speaker 2: out at CBS. Also, the Patriots in the NFL will
- 4:52Speaker 2: play the Bills on Sunday without standout defenders, cornerback Christian
- 4:57Speaker 2: Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore, who have both been
- 5:01Speaker 2: ruled out this weekend in a big game in the NFL.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Brooks Austin of On3 put the SEC in tiers, as
- 5:09Speaker 2: he calls it, SEC tier talk. Tier one is teams
- 5:14Speaker 2: he feels like can get to around 10-2. He calls
- 5:16Speaker 2: it 10-2+. I don't know if there's a plus 10-2,
- 5:20Speaker 2: meaning getting 11 or 12. There's a tier 2, 8,
- 5:22Speaker 2: and 4, kind of where he's projecting the rest of
- 5:24Speaker 2: the way out. Tier 3 is 6 and 6. And
- 5:27Speaker 2: tier 4 is 4 and 8. That tier 4, 4
- 5:31Speaker 2: and 8, he has, no surprise, Arkansas in that tier 4.
- 5:36Speaker 2: He has Vanderbilt in that tier 4, 4 and 8 plus.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And you've got South Carolina. And, you know, I think
- 5:43Speaker 2: that's fair. I mean, Arkansas definitely is a shoe-in for
- 5:45Speaker 2: that tier, if you want to put them in these tiers.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Vanderbilt is likely trending back to, you know, he says
- 5:52Speaker 2: 4 and 8 plus, so we're talking, you know, 4
- 5:54Speaker 2: and 8, 5 and 6, or 5 and 7, somewhere
- 5:56Speaker 2: in that neck of the woods. Vanderbilt, you know, is
- 6:01Speaker 2: going to trend backwards to that from, you know, last year.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And then South Carolina will probably be there as well.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Let's go to the phones. Let's go to the, I
- 6:12Speaker 2: was told to capitalize every letter, the Gator Matt. Matt,
- 6:16Speaker 2: happy Friday.
- 6:18Speaker 4: That's right. You knew?
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yep. Mm-hmm.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Have the phone calls been kind of light from the
- 6:26Speaker 4: Mississippi folks this week?
- 6:28Speaker 2: I wouldn't say light. They've been about the same.
- 6:32Speaker 4: But, you know, I mean, Florida's not a very good program.
- 6:35Speaker 4: There has been. LSU is a way better job than Florida.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I mean, Florida's just a bunch of hype, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 4: off of something they did in a 10-year stretch, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 4: 20 years ago that It's just an overrated program. The
- 6:50Speaker 4: school's not great. But what happened, Jake? You get somebody
- 6:55Speaker 4: that has half a brain, and look what happened. That's
- 7:00Speaker 4: what happened. So, you know, are we going to win
- 7:05Speaker 4: all the games this year? Probably not. But you know what, Jake?
- 7:11Speaker 4: And I don't think you can argue with this. Is
- 7:13Speaker 4: it possible that we can win the rest of the
- 7:16Speaker 4: games this year? You're damn right it is. But with
- 7:20Speaker 4: all that being said, I did have us losing tomorrow
- 7:25Speaker 4: to Missouri. I got us losing to Texas. And I
- 7:29Speaker 4: think I have us losing to Oklahoma being nine and three.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I think that's what I originally predicted because I know
- 7:35Speaker 4: what I'm talking about, Jake, unlike you and some of
- 7:38Speaker 4: the other people that call in. Also, what else did
- 7:41Speaker 4: I say? I had Mississippi State at what? Eight and four.
- 7:45Speaker 4: And look at me.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, hey, Matt's pegged it so far.
- 7:50Speaker 3: He has.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Now, look, I do believe that this weekend, and we'll
- 7:53Speaker 2: get more into this Missouri-Florida game coming up this weekend,
- 8:00Speaker 2: as I do think Missouri could win this football game,
- 8:02Speaker 2: or at least I think they'll take it into quarter
- 8:04Speaker 2: number four. And, look, if Florida goes 9-3, there's going
- 8:08Speaker 2: to be questions. Again, we don't know until we get
- 8:11Speaker 2: there and where it's there, what the playoff committee is
- 8:14Speaker 2: going to do with several 9-3 teams. because I don't
- 8:17Speaker 2: know that you're going to have enough 10-2s to 12-0s
- 8:21Speaker 2: that's going to circumvent the college football playoff. You're going
- 8:24Speaker 2: to have to have some 9-3s in there. So what
- 8:27Speaker 2: does a 9-3 Florida resume, if they go to 9-3,
- 8:29Speaker 2: look like versus, let's just say, an Iowa team who, yes, Iowa,
- 8:35Speaker 2: who is undefeated so far. Let's say they beat Ohio
- 8:37Speaker 2: State this weekend, but then maybe lose two more down
- 8:39Speaker 2: the stretch, or they lose a close one to Ohio State,
- 8:42Speaker 2: and they lose a couple more down the stretch. What
- 8:44Speaker 2: does that look like? So And that's just two examples
- 8:46Speaker 2: of two teams. There's likely going to be three or
- 8:50Speaker 2: four teams that end up in that 9-3 range. And
- 8:53Speaker 2: we'll continue on with this tier because one of these
- 8:55Speaker 2: tiers coming up is 8-4 plus in the SEC, courtesy
- 8:59Speaker 2: of On3 Sports. But, yeah, Florida's got a tough one tomorrow.
- 9:03Speaker 2: We'll get into Mississippi State and Alabama, and we'll carry on.
- 9:06Speaker 2: We've got Steve Robertson coming up here in about 20 minutes.

- 11:13Speaker 2: and Alabama coming up in the next segment. Rafael Esparza,
- 11:17Speaker 2: start of Hour 2. Keith Hardy at the bottom of
- 11:19Speaker 2: Hour 2. We'll see what happens after that. Looking at
- 11:22Speaker 2: these tiers, projected tiers moving forward by On 3 after
- 11:26Speaker 2: a month. They have Arkansas, Vandy, and South Carolina in
- 11:29Speaker 2: Tier 4, which is 4-8. That's 4 wins, 8 losses plus.
- 11:31Speaker 2: They can go 4-8, 5-7. Tier 3, 6-6 plus. They'll
- 11:32Speaker 2: be 6-6, 7-5. They have Kentucky at 6-6 or 7-5.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And I think that's fair, the way they've played. Auburn,
- 11:47Speaker 2: Texas A & M, Oklahoma, and Missouri. I think all
- 11:50Speaker 2: of those are fair. In Tier 2, 8-4 plus. That
- 11:55Speaker 2: would be 8-4, 9-3. They have LSU at 8-4, 9-3.
- 11:56Speaker 2: They have Tennessee at 8-4, 9-3. And I think Tennessee
- 11:58Speaker 2: could be in that 8-4 conversation. Ole Miss and Mississippi
- 12:07Speaker 2: State in that 8-4 slash 9-3. That's Tier 2, and
- 12:15Speaker 2: then we'll get into Tier 1 here in just a bit.
- 12:17Speaker 2: But first, let's go to Rebel Red and Blue on
- 12:19Speaker 2: the Mississippi Sports Medicine call line. Rebel Red and Blue,
- 12:21Speaker 2: welcome in, sir. How are you?
- 12:23Speaker 6: Good afternoon.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Hi, brother.
- 12:26Speaker 7: So I want to throw something out at you.
- 12:28Speaker 6: So their Ole Miss Rebel defense hasn't really showed up much.
- 12:35Speaker 6: And most of the players are transfers. Pete Golding and
- 12:41Speaker 6: staff recruited most of your players under Kiffin, and they're
- 12:46Speaker 6: still recruiting players. But let me ask you this question.
- 12:51Speaker 6: You know, when you bring transfers in, it's kind of
- 12:53Speaker 6: like bringing the old days of going heavy on JUCO players.
- 12:58Speaker 7: You get them there for one, maybe two years, but.
- 13:01Speaker 6: They got to mesh. They got to jail. They got
- 13:03Speaker 6: to be able to play together. Well, what if one
- 13:07Speaker 6: of Kiffin's.
- 13:08Speaker 7: Superpowers was the fact that he was able to take
- 13:11Speaker 7: a bunch of transfers, first-year players, and make them jail
- 13:15Speaker 7: together and play together, and maybe that's just really the
- 13:20Speaker 7: only thing we really lost with Kiffin going to LSU
- 13:24Speaker 7: is we're seeing that maybe no one on the staff
- 13:26Speaker 7: can actually make them jail as fast.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I'm out. Thank you, brother. Appreciate it. We'll never know.
- 13:34Speaker 2: if that is true, as it pertains to Lane Kiffin,
- 13:36Speaker 2: but I do think there is some credence to what
- 13:39Speaker 2: Rebel Red and Blue just said. And I'm not saying
- 13:40Speaker 2: Pete Golding and his staff can't do this. It takes
- 13:45Speaker 2: a special group of people to take 30, 40 guys
- 13:51Speaker 2: and put them all together in about seven to eight
- 13:54Speaker 2: months and then get them ready to go. I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 2: think about this. You guys, everybody listening has been a
- 14:01Speaker 2: part or you know, as a parent or as a
- 14:04Speaker 2: coach of some kind of a travel ball team, a
- 14:08Speaker 2: youth team, and you know how hard it is, a
- 14:11Speaker 2: cheerleading squad, whatever, you know, a Boy Scout group, a
- 14:14Speaker 2: Girl Scout group, just, you know, a group of people. Heck,
- 14:17Speaker 2: your work. Maybe you have, you know, a company that
- 14:19Speaker 2: you're running and you got five or six employees or
- 14:22Speaker 2: 20 employees, whatever. And to try to get everybody on
- 14:25Speaker 2: the same page, I mean, you know how hard it
- 14:27Speaker 2: is for a tournament ball team. And the good ones,
- 14:30Speaker 2: excuse me, Now, obviously, if they have more talent than
- 14:33Speaker 2: the others, then that's one thing. But then to get
- 14:35Speaker 2: them to play in a cohesive way, it takes a
- 14:37Speaker 2: lot of work. It's on steroids with college football because
- 14:42Speaker 2: you've got now 40 new players, 30 new players, whatever
- 14:45Speaker 2: that may be. And I'll get you the average, like
- 14:49Speaker 2: the average top and bottoms of what these teams, because
- 14:52Speaker 2: I think this is a great topic and a great
- 14:54Speaker 2: conversation piece, is that some coaches can do it and
- 14:59Speaker 2: then some coaches are not so good at it. And
- 15:01Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin has shown, I mean, look at LSU. They're
- 15:04Speaker 2: getting better. They're getting better. They weren't that bad against
- 15:09Speaker 2: Ole Miss. I mean, they came back from a 24-7 deficit.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So I think there is something to that. Now, can
- 15:15Speaker 2: Pete Golding and that staff do that? We'll see. And
- 15:18Speaker 2: there's another side of this coin, too. Maybe the evaluation
- 15:22Speaker 2: isn't as good on some of these players. And that's
- 15:24Speaker 2: not just at Ole Miss. That's anywhere. Because remember, the
- 15:26Speaker 2: evaluation process has to be pretty darn quick. Now, obviously,
- 15:30Speaker 2: you've got staffers that are evaluating players constantly. I mean,
- 15:34Speaker 2: that's why you have so many staffers, not just to
- 15:36Speaker 2: have them on game day but to have them do
- 15:37Speaker 2: other things, break down film, look at players, recruit players,
- 15:43Speaker 2: any kind of internal management stuff that may be going
- 15:45Speaker 2: on in the building. There's a lot of boxes to check, staffs.
- 15:50Speaker 2: But maybe the evaluation is not as good because it's
- 15:53Speaker 2: very quick. When we were in Oxford before the season
- 15:55Speaker 2: and we met with Mississippi Sports Medicine, talking to their
- 15:59Speaker 2: team up there, they were talking about, you know, how
- 16:01Speaker 2: quickly the evaluation process has to happen medically. Because, you know,
- 16:05Speaker 2: once you, you know, identify a player, identify Beave as
- 16:08Speaker 2: a guy that I want to go get, we reach
- 16:10Speaker 2: out to him. We talk money with him and his agent. Well,
- 16:13Speaker 2: then we got to make this thing work quick because
- 16:15Speaker 2: other teams are coming in on him and we've got,
- 16:16Speaker 2: you know, a deadline to get. Now he's committed to us.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Now we got to get him medically clear. There's a
- 16:21Speaker 2: lot of, and you're doing this over multiple people. And
- 16:24Speaker 2: then you're trying to also identify guys that are good
- 16:27Speaker 2: character guys, guys that have high motors, guys that have
- 16:30Speaker 2: good work ethic. And sometimes you miss. You know, I've
- 16:34Speaker 2: said this before. Mike Norvell hit the lottery in 2021
- 16:40Speaker 2: or 2022, whenever that was, with Jordan Travis and that group.
- 16:43Speaker 2: That was a really good group of transfers. And it
- 16:47Speaker 2: worked for them. They won 13 games that year. But
- 16:51Speaker 2: since then, they have not hit the lottery anymore. in
- 16:53Speaker 2: the transfer portal. And they've gotten almost the same number
- 16:57Speaker 2: of transfers, plus or minus five or six, every year.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And it hasn't worked out. So you're seeing this around
- 17:05Speaker 2: the country. Some coaches are better suited for this fast-paced,
- 17:11Speaker 2: pull them all together. And then, look, if you take
- 17:14Speaker 2: a shot on a quarterback and he doesn't work out,
- 17:17Speaker 2: then that can lose you a couple ballgames. If you
- 17:19Speaker 2: take a shot on a quarterback and he works out,
- 17:21Speaker 2: That can win you a couple ballgames. So I do
- 17:23Speaker 2: think it's something to think about in terms of the
- 17:26Speaker 2: transfer portal and the era. Tier number one on on three,
- 17:30Speaker 2: they have 10 and two plus. I don't know that
- 17:32Speaker 2: any– well, maybe Georgia. Georgia may win 11 games, but
- 17:35Speaker 2: it's Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. So I bring this
- 17:40Speaker 2: up because of what Gator Matt had said, and I
- 17:43Speaker 2: wasn't planning this on Gator Matt's call, but it was
- 17:45Speaker 2: part of what I wanted to talk about at least
- 17:46Speaker 2: early is We're going to have several 9-3 teams because
- 17:50Speaker 2: what if Georgia goes 11-1 and let's say Bamar, Texas
- 17:53Speaker 2: goes 10-2 and then the other two plus Florida or
- 17:57Speaker 2: the other one plus Florida go 9-3 and then LSU's
- 18:00Speaker 2: at 9-3 and Ole Miss and State's at 9-3 and
- 18:03Speaker 2: you've got like four teams at 9-3. But then you've
- 18:06Speaker 2: got two or three teams in the Big Ten that
- 18:08Speaker 2: are 9-3. A team in the ACC that's 9-3. A
- 18:11Speaker 2: team in the Big 12 that's 9-3. And you've got
- 18:14Speaker 2: like nine teams around the country that's sitting at 9-3.
- 18:17Speaker 2: you're going to have four or five that's going to
- 18:19Speaker 2: be left out. And so I will be interested to
- 18:21Speaker 2: see how the college football playoff committee looks at this
- 18:25Speaker 2: as we move forward. Speaking of Ole Miss, Ole Miss
- 18:27Speaker 2: is finalizing an agreement to make Adidas. It's a new
- 18:30Speaker 2: apparel partner beginning in 2027. This is reported on by
- 18:34Speaker 2: On3 and others and the Ole Miss spirit. And we'll
- 18:37Speaker 2: get into this. It's a big deal for Ole Miss.
- 18:40Speaker 2: It is a large sum of money as Adidas comes
- 18:44Speaker 2: in as the new apparel partner starting next year. for
- 18:46Speaker 2: the Ole Miss Rebels. And again, we're going to get
- 18:49Speaker 2: back into this. 2024, or excuse me, 24 SEC-controlled games
- 18:54Speaker 2: on TV. The rest of college football had 129. SEC
- 18:57Speaker 2: put this out today, said we, as in the SEC,
- 19:01Speaker 2: still took 41% of the minutes watched. And looking at
- 19:06Speaker 2: some of these TV numbers over the last little bit,
- 19:08Speaker 2: I mean, the SEC, as far as TV top 10,
- 19:14Speaker 2: this is the first four weeks of Ohio State, Texas,
- 19:17Speaker 2: number one, 14 million eyeballs. LSU, Ole Miss, number two
- 19:20Speaker 2: at 10.9. Texas, Tennessee at number three, 9.7. Ole Miss,
- 19:24Speaker 2: Florida last week had 8.3 million. Oklahoma, Michigan, 8.2 million.
- 19:29Speaker 2: The one game in the middle of this that had more,
- 19:32Speaker 2: that wasn't an SEC, because seven, eight, nine, and ten
- 19:34Speaker 2: are all SEC games or teams, like Alabama, Kentucky, 7.3.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Florida State, Alabama, 7 million. Clemson, LSU, 5.8. Texas A
- 19:43Speaker 2: & M, LSU, 5.7. Was Wisconsin, Notre Dame, drew 7.4
- 19:47Speaker 2: million people. So the SEC is getting the... lion's share
- 19:51Speaker 2: of the eyeballs in college football and that should be
- 19:54Speaker 2: no surprise we're brought to you by our friends at
- 19:55Speaker 2: ranco transmission 1460 old brandon road in flowwood 601-939-9184 53

- 20:54Speaker 2: going to have to reschedule Steve. He's had an appointment
- 20:56Speaker 2: come up, so we will get with him next week.
- 20:59Speaker 2: So apologies about that. But if you do have thoughts
- 21:01Speaker 2: on Mississippi State and Alabama, feel free to share them
- 21:04Speaker 2: with us on the text line or give us a
- 21:06Speaker 2: call as Mississippi State and Alabama. It's been a long
- 21:10Speaker 2: time since Mississippi State has beaten Alabama. Let me look
- 21:15Speaker 2: at something real quick. Sean C. Memphis hit me up
- 21:20Speaker 2: on X about this. He said he didn't realize that
- 21:22Speaker 2: it was such a lopsided affair between the two. And
- 21:29Speaker 2: it is absolutely that. When you look at the history
- 21:35Speaker 2: between these two schools that are the closest in the SEC,
- 21:38Speaker 2: 86 wins for Alabama, 18 for Mississippi State, and three ties.
- 21:43Speaker 2: So you're talking about um, 94, 97 times. This will
- 21:47Speaker 2: be the 98th meeting between the two, uh, coming up
- 21:51Speaker 2: this weekend. And they started playing football against each other
- 21:54Speaker 2: in 1896, 1896, Mississippi state and Alabama played their first
- 21:58Speaker 2: football game. Alabama won that ball game 20 to nothing.
- 22:02Speaker 2: And they had a couple of years where they didn't
- 22:03Speaker 2: play and got back at it in 1901, just the
- 22:06Speaker 2: turn of the century. And Alabama won in Tuscaloosa again,
- 22:08Speaker 2: 45 to nothing. Um, They played in Tuscaloosa for the
- 22:13Speaker 2: first few years. They played in Columbus, Mississippi in 1903.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Mississippi State got an 11-0 win and played in Columbus
- 22:21Speaker 2: for the next year. And Alabama got a 10-5 win.
- 22:25Speaker 2: And it wasn't baseball. That was football, 10-5. And played
- 22:28Speaker 2: a few times in Birmingham in the early 1900s. Actually
- 22:32Speaker 2: played in Birmingham several times. Played in Meridian in 1926. And,
- 22:39Speaker 2: of course, that's going to be at the historic stadium
- 22:40Speaker 2: there at Ray stadium. And, uh, because remember they used
- 22:44Speaker 2: to play the egg bowl down there and the Ray stadium.
- 22:47Speaker 2: If you, if you've been, you know what I'm talking about,
- 22:48Speaker 2: but if you have it, it's, it's a, it's a
- 22:50Speaker 2: pretty big space, you know, for, for a high school stadium.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's a, it's a decent sized facility. Uh,
- 22:57Speaker 2: Alabama won that game in 1926, 26 to seven. And
- 23:01Speaker 2: of course they, then they went back to Tuscaloosa and
- 23:02Speaker 2: a couple in Starkville. When you get into the, you know,
- 23:06Speaker 2: 1940s kind of back and forth, uh, between the two places.
- 23:10Speaker 2: And then, uh, In 1958 forward, they played just about
- 23:14Speaker 2: every year. You've got to go all the way back
- 23:17Speaker 2: to 2007 for Mississippi State with a 17-12 win, and
- 23:22Speaker 2: it's been all Alabama since then. This is a big
- 23:25Speaker 2: opportunity for Mississippi State. It's a big opportunity for Alabama.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Largest margin of victory, 59 points. 59-0 victory in 1922
- 23:32Speaker 2: for Alabama. Longest winning streak in the series for Alabama
- 23:41Speaker 2: is 22 games 1958 to 1979 for Mississippi State the
- 23:46Speaker 2: largest margin of victory in 2000 was a 29-7 Bulldog
- 23:50Speaker 2: victory their longest win streak three games 1912 to 1914
- 23:56Speaker 2: so you know you really kind of throw all that
- 23:58Speaker 2: out the window though especially as you move into the
- 24:01Speaker 2: transfer portal era because teams are built differently they look
- 24:06Speaker 2: differently um you know A lot of the guys that
- 24:09Speaker 2: are on both rosters, you know, I dare say there's
- 24:12Speaker 2: guys on Alabama's roster that didn't even know who Mississippi
- 24:15Speaker 2: State was before they got there, nor did they care.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And the same for Mississippi State. They knew who Alabama was,
- 24:20Speaker 2: but probably didn't understand or know the history between the
- 24:22Speaker 2: two versus 10 years ago or 20 years ago when
- 24:26Speaker 2: guys are coming through and know that, hey, if I
- 24:28Speaker 2: go to Starkville, we're going to play Bama every year.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And it hadn't gone well. Maybe we can be the
- 24:31Speaker 2: first team to, you know, have some success. Or if
- 24:34Speaker 2: you go to Tuscaloosa, you say, hey, we beat this
- 24:36Speaker 2: team typically every year. It's an automatic W. But I
- 24:39Speaker 2: think the matchup is really good. Mississippi State is going
- 24:42Speaker 2: to have to cut down on penalties. That has been
- 24:44Speaker 2: a problem. If you want to look for a negative,
- 24:46Speaker 2: that has been a problem. For Alabama, they have been
- 24:49Speaker 2: a slow starter on the road, and they have played
- 24:51Speaker 2: very lethargic at times on the road. And if you're
- 24:55Speaker 2: Mississippi State, I think you hope for that tomorrow, that
- 24:58Speaker 2: Zach Arnett has put some defensive packages together to really
- 25:03Speaker 2: try to confuse Keelan Russell. and you try to get
- 25:06Speaker 2: up on Alabama, and then you make them chase. I
- 25:08Speaker 2: don't know that State can chase. Look, there's one thing
- 25:11Speaker 2: about Jeff Levy's offense. It is built to move, meaning
- 25:14Speaker 2: it is built to score points. And so, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 2: you fall down a couple touchdowns, you can come back.
- 25:20Speaker 2: But you don't want to do that against this Alabama team.
- 25:24Speaker 2: This is a team in Alabama that, you know, when
- 25:27Speaker 2: you kind of look through the numbers here on what
- 25:30Speaker 2: they've done, averaging 48, giving up 20 a game, You know,
- 25:34Speaker 2: week one against East Carolina, a snoozer game, 48-10. Kentucky,
- 25:39Speaker 2: that was a game for a half, and then they
- 25:41Speaker 2: pulled away 45-17. Florida State did the most damage offensively
- 25:46Speaker 2: with 36 points against them. And, you know, Bama scored
- 25:49Speaker 2: a couple touchdowns there in the fourth quarter to make
- 25:50Speaker 2: that a 50-36 ballgame. South Carolina, and again, South Carolina's
- 25:56Speaker 2: got problems. They got a lot of problems. And, yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 2: You know, Shane Beamer's got problems. They've just got problems. And,
- 26:03Speaker 2: you know, they've started to dovetail here. But Alabama, really
- 26:08Speaker 2: good football team. Mississippi State, really good football team. So
- 26:11Speaker 2: it should be a good one in Starville. If you've
- 26:13Speaker 2: got any predictions, you can text us, 601-885-3776. We'll get
- 26:17Speaker 2: into Brett McMurphy's Week 5 predictions. Speaking of the SEC,
- 26:21Speaker 2: SEC's Greg Sankey told whoever– oh, John Arand– sports journalist,
- 26:29Speaker 2: that the SEC was approached by a West Coast school, quote,
- 26:33Speaker 2: I don't even have that conversation, talking about conference expansion.
- 26:37Speaker 2: He said, I'm the one person who didn't take away
- 26:40Speaker 2: from the Pac-12. Talking about expanding, the SEC did not
- 26:44Speaker 2: take a team from the Pac-12. You know, obviously four
- 26:46Speaker 2: teams went to the Big Ten, several went to the
- 26:48Speaker 2: Big 12. You had now a couple that's in the
- 26:51Speaker 2: revised Pac-12 2.0. He said, if you play any sport
- 26:56Speaker 2: in the SEC, you have to at most have a
- 26:59Speaker 2: two-hour plane ride from point A to point B. And
- 27:02Speaker 2: I think if you look at the landscape, that's kind
- 27:03Speaker 2: of what it is. You know, if you went from
- 27:06Speaker 2: Texas at Austin all the way to Florida or South Carolina, that's,
- 27:11Speaker 2: you know, you could probably without a, you know, it's
- 27:13Speaker 2: a direct flight probably about two hours. So Greg Sankey said, hey, look,
- 27:16Speaker 2: we're not going to expand if we expand and bring
- 27:19Speaker 2: anybody in that's going to have– they're not doing what
- 27:21Speaker 2: the Big Ten is doing. You know, it's two totally
- 27:24Speaker 2: different models on expansion. The Big Ten has– decided they
- 27:29Speaker 2: want to be a coast-to-coast league, which is fine. That's
- 27:31Speaker 2: what they want to do. There's some positives to that from,
- 27:34Speaker 2: you know, television coverage and television dollars, and there's some
- 27:37Speaker 2: negatives for, and we know that, the cost to go
- 27:39Speaker 2: play from the East Coast to the West Coast or
- 27:42Speaker 2: back and forth. The SEC says, hey, we're going to
- 27:44Speaker 2: stay in our footprint, relatively speaking, you know, not the
- 27:49Speaker 2: old traditional SEC footprint. We've expanded that out a little
- 27:52Speaker 2: bit into the state of Texas, into the state of Missouri,
- 27:56Speaker 2: maybe up into the Carolinas. but we're going to be
- 27:58Speaker 2: within two hours. Sankey also said on a proposed 2014 playoff,
- 28:03Speaker 2: our concerns relate to how you manage the economics. Is
- 28:07Speaker 2: there value? I don't think people understand the difficulty of
- 28:11Speaker 2: going week to week to week to week to week
- 28:15Speaker 2: in December. He said, we've looked at it and said
- 28:19Speaker 2: CFP selection decisions are negatively impacting regular season scheduling, particularly
- 28:26Speaker 2: big non-conference games. That needs to be addressed first, and
- 28:30Speaker 2: also the economics. What we do with conference championship games
- 28:35Speaker 2: and the games fit in understanding the impact. So what
- 28:41Speaker 2: he's saying is this. There's several layers to just doing
- 28:45Speaker 2: the 2014 playoff. One is the grind. He said, I
- 28:49Speaker 2: don't think people understand the difficulty of going. He mentioned one, two, three,
- 28:52Speaker 2: four weeks in December after a season. And then he
- 28:57Speaker 2: looked at the selection committee because nobody trusts the selection committee.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Not that they're trying to be underhanded. Nobody trusts what
- 29:05Speaker 2: the selection committee is doing. By default, they'll get right
- 29:08Speaker 2: most of the field. But then what about the last four, five,
- 29:12Speaker 2: or six? If you're in a 24-team playoff, or what
- 29:14Speaker 2: about the last two, three, four in a 12-team playoff?
- 29:18Speaker 2: He said their decisions are negatively impacting regular season scheduling.
- 29:22Speaker 2: And what he means by that is teams now are
- 29:24Speaker 2: starting to say, well, I don't know that I want
- 29:25Speaker 2: to play a big-time non-conference game if it's going to
- 29:30Speaker 2: penalize me with this playoff committee when we don't really
- 29:33Speaker 2: know what the criteria is. So, you know, you take
- 29:36Speaker 2: a team like Ohio State that lost to Texas or
- 29:39Speaker 2: last year Texas who lost to Ohio State, they finished 9-3.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Had they scheduled Texas State or Louisiana Tech and finished 10-2,
- 29:46Speaker 2: would they have made the playoffs? Maybe. Probably. So are
- 29:51Speaker 2: you penalized for those kind of games? So, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 2: there needs to be some kind of criteria for the
- 29:56Speaker 2: schedule that you play, much like college basketball. You know,
- 29:59Speaker 2: when you start talking about, you know, the way the
- 30:02Speaker 2: pod system and all the scheduling and things of that nature,
- 30:05Speaker 2: I think that's where Sankey's at. And then the financials
- 30:07Speaker 2: as well. You know, we need to see on paper
- 30:10Speaker 2: that we're assured if we get rid of the conference championships,
- 30:14Speaker 2: how are we going to get our money back? Because
- 30:16Speaker 2: that's $ 100 million loss by saying no more SEC championship game,
- 30:21Speaker 2: no more Big Ten championship, no more ACC championship. Now,
- 30:24Speaker 2: they've floated out, yes, we're going to, you know, there's
- 30:26Speaker 2: an opportunity to get $ 250 million. But they need to
- 30:31Speaker 2: see that before they just cut the cord on the
- 30:34Speaker 2: championship games. Also, Lincoln Riley, head football coach at USC,
- 30:39Speaker 2: had some interesting words that we'll get into. And this
- 30:43Speaker 2: is just kind of a precursor to that. He says, quote,
- 30:44Speaker 2: talking about their loss to Oregon, he said, we didn't
- 30:48Speaker 2: get run out of the stadium. All right, let me
- 30:51Speaker 2: stop right there. That was his first quote. We didn't
- 30:56Speaker 2: get run out of the stadium. So if we go
- 30:58Speaker 2: back over here and look at last week for USC,
- 31:02Speaker 2: USC lost 41-27. Now, I didn't watch that game. But
- 31:08Speaker 2: if I see that score, 41-27, now maybe Oregon tacked
- 31:12Speaker 2: on a late touchdown. But 41-27 has kind of run
- 31:15Speaker 2: out of the building, hasn't it? I mean, 41-27, that's
- 31:19Speaker 2: a lot of points. But he goes on to say,
- 31:21Speaker 2: we didn't get run out of the stadium. There's a
- 31:22Speaker 2: lot of good things on that tape. He says, you
- 31:25Speaker 2: don't have a chance to win a game like that
- 31:28Speaker 2: if you don't do some things pretty well. And, again,
- 31:30Speaker 2: I need to bring this box score up. I don't
- 31:32Speaker 2: know what Lincoln Riley is talking about here. He's just talking.
- 31:36Speaker 2: As Brett McMurphy says, don't think the playoff committee considers that, quote,
- 31:39Speaker 2: we didn't get run out of the stadium. So, yeah,
- 31:42Speaker 2: I'm going to look at this box score. I'm going
- 31:43Speaker 2: to pull it up during the break. Hey, we're brought

- 34:12Speaker 2: games of the weekend in high school football coming up.
- 34:15Speaker 2: There were some games last night in high school football.
- 34:18Speaker 2: McComb was all over Poplarville last night, if you missed it.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And Poplarville came back and won 49-48 in double overtime.
- 34:24Speaker 2: I obviously didn't see the game. I was in North
- 34:27Speaker 2: Mississippi for the Hines game. But, man, that game kept
- 34:30Speaker 2: popping across on the wire. And Poplarville was just so talented.
- 34:34Speaker 2: If you haven't watched Poplarville ever play– If they get
- 34:38Speaker 2: to the state championship, you ought to turn them on,
- 34:40Speaker 2: and I think they will. Ty Keyes is a uber,
- 34:45Speaker 2: uber talented running back, committed to the University of Miami,
- 34:48Speaker 2: and he and Tyson Robinson at Brandon are the two
- 34:50Speaker 2: top running backs in the state. Both made the Mississippi-Alabama
- 34:53Speaker 2: All-Star Game, along with Demarius Bobo, the third guy in
- 34:57Speaker 2: the state. He's the running back at Tupelo. I don't
- 34:58Speaker 2: know if he's committed yet or not, but Ty Keyes
- 35:01Speaker 2: and Popperville are fun to watch, even though they run
- 35:04Speaker 2: the wing tee, and I say even though because a
- 35:06Speaker 2: lot of people don't like to watch that style of
- 35:07Speaker 2: football anymore. They run it with precision. They run it
- 35:11Speaker 2: with speed. And, boy, it is fun to watch. Also,
- 35:13Speaker 2: Gulfport has no problem last night with Ocean Springs, 42-3.
- 35:17Speaker 2: All right, looking at this box score, trying to see
- 35:21Speaker 2: if Lincoln Riley is lying to us or not. I mean,
- 35:24Speaker 2: USC put up some numbers. They were out yardage 504-446
- 35:30Speaker 2: because Lincoln Riley says, hey, look, again, if you're just
- 35:32Speaker 2: joining us, he says, we didn't get run out of
- 35:34Speaker 2: the stadium. He said there's a lot of good things
- 35:36Speaker 2: on that tape, talking about the reviewing the tape of
- 35:39Speaker 2: USC and Oregon. He said, you don't have a chance
- 35:43Speaker 2: to win a game like that if you don't do
- 35:44Speaker 2: some things pretty well. Well, this game was 3-0 Oregon
- 35:49Speaker 2: after one. It was 13-10 at the half. It was
- 35:54Speaker 2: 27-20 after three, and then Oregon dropped 14-7 in the fourth.
- 35:59Speaker 2: So they might have had a puncher's chance. Maybe they
- 36:02Speaker 2: didn't get run out of the building, but by most
- 36:06Speaker 2: statistical measures, They were beaten. Now, the only thing USC
- 36:10Speaker 2: did better than Oregon, they had 26 first downs versus 23.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And USC was awful on third down last week. They
- 36:17Speaker 2: were two for 11. Two for 11 on third downs.
- 36:20Speaker 2: They were four or five on fourth downs. So, you know,
- 36:24Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley's just, I mean, he's trying to save his job.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot of stuff out there on
- 36:29Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley with his job. And there was something I
- 36:32Speaker 2: saw yesterday. Speaking of, jobs and buyouts and things of
- 36:35Speaker 2: that nature. Let me go back and find this. Somebody
- 36:37Speaker 2: posted something on Texas A & M that I thought
- 36:40Speaker 2: was pretty darn fascinating. Let me see if I can
- 36:44Speaker 2: find this real quick. As it pertains to Kevin Sumlin
- 36:48Speaker 2: and Texas A & M. There it is. So, yeah,
- 36:52Speaker 2: Kyle Umlang, on exit Kyle Umlang. He is a data scientist,
- 36:59Speaker 2: and he's been in sports for a long time, and
- 37:01Speaker 2: we've referenced some of his stuff over the years. He's
- 37:02Speaker 2: really good. normally he kind of stays in the lane
- 37:06Speaker 2: of Texas and Texas A & M. He's a Texas grad.
- 37:09Speaker 2: But he put this out about Kevin Sumlin. He said
- 37:10Speaker 2: if Texas A & M had never fired Kevin Sumlin,
- 37:15Speaker 2: if Kevin Sumlin was still there today, and he was
- 37:17Speaker 2: still a 7-5 coach, and they continued giving him $ 2
- 37:22Speaker 2: million raises every four years, and he kept his 66.2%
- 37:27Speaker 2: winning percentage, the Aggies today would have saved $ 102 million
- 37:32Speaker 2: and had two more wins. Now, what do you think
- 37:34Speaker 2: about that? What he's saying is if you had kept
- 37:36Speaker 2: Kevin Sumlin, who was money 7-5, 8-4 every year, wanted
- 37:44Speaker 2: a clip of 66.2%, you get rid of Kevin Sumlin,
- 37:48Speaker 2: you get Jimbo Fisher. You had the Jimbo Fisher experiment,
- 37:52Speaker 2: you had the big buyout. Now you've got the coaching
- 37:55Speaker 2: staff that's there now. If they had kept Kevin Sumlin
- 37:59Speaker 2: and he continued at that same clip project it to
- 38:02Speaker 2: the future, and gave him a raise, $ 2 million every
- 38:07Speaker 2: four years, they'd have saved $ 102 million, and they would
- 38:11Speaker 2: have two more wins today than they have today, which
- 38:15Speaker 2: is crazy to think about. And, you know, it's just
- 38:18Speaker 2: crazy to think about. I thought that was a staggering
- 38:21Speaker 2: number there by own lane. All right, Ross Dillinger reporting
- 38:24Speaker 2: more than 300 NCAA Division I schools distributed $ 1. 7 billion
- 38:28Speaker 2: in revenue share today. Pool payments to athletes last year,
- 38:34Speaker 2: plus $ 200 million more in Alstons and new scholarships per
- 38:42Speaker 2: this data set that they have. The NCAA filed in
- 38:45Speaker 2: the House case about 60 to 65 schools distributed more
- 38:48Speaker 2: than $ 17. 9 million in revenue shares. So just some numbers there.
- 38:52Speaker 2: But 300 NCAA Division I schools, $ 1. 7 billion in revenue share.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Most of the schools that distributed at least $ 17. 9 million
- 39:00Speaker 2: are believed to have met the full rev share cap
- 39:04Speaker 2: of $ 20. 5 million, as up to $ 2. 5 million of new
- 39:07Speaker 2: scholarships was reduced, and a school's cap, many programs added scholarships.
- 39:14Speaker 2: House members, remember this bill on D.C. 's, you know,
- 39:18Speaker 2: the front doorstep of D.C., it passed the Senate. Well,
- 39:21Speaker 2: now it's got to pass the House. The House ain't
- 39:24Speaker 2: having it. The House is already cutting this thing, cutting
- 39:27Speaker 2: the legs out from underneath it. House members have not
- 39:29Speaker 2: received the Protect College Sports Act with open arms. White
- 39:32Speaker 2: House isn't happy either. Neither is the Senate. It's part
- 39:36Speaker 2: of the Senate. The Senate passed it, but there's still
- 39:39Speaker 2: people in the Senate that didn't like it. In the
- 39:40Speaker 2: middle of a fight, a group of ACC schools wanting
- 39:44Speaker 2: an easier exit from the league. So what you're getting
- 39:47Speaker 2: now is.
- 39:49Speaker 2: There's so much going on with this. That's why it's
- 39:51Speaker 2: not going to pass. But you've got Miami and Florida
- 39:53Speaker 2: State that are wanting an easier exit out of the ACC.
- 39:57Speaker 2: They want out. Make no mistake about it. They want
- 40:01Speaker 2: out of the ACC. And now they're trying to use
- 40:06Speaker 2: this bill as part of that. Also, we'll get into this.
- 40:10Speaker 2: We didn't get into it when we mentioned it yesterday
- 40:11Speaker 2: or two days ago. Buyouts for fired head coaches, what
- 40:14Speaker 2: that would look like, as we could hit close to
- 40:16Speaker 2: that $ 220 million buyout. or that top point that we
- 40:21Speaker 2: hit last year, we could hit it this year. And
- 40:26Speaker 2: NFL News 49ers principal owner Jed York has been suspended
- 40:30Speaker 2: for six regular season games and fined $ 500, 000 for violating
- 40:34Speaker 2: the NFL's personal conduct policy the NFL announced today. During
- 40:38Speaker 2: the time the league's investigation had been proceeding, York has
- 40:43Speaker 2: stayed away from the 49ers' first three regular season games
- 40:47Speaker 2: as well as the NFL League meetings. Those three missed
- 40:51Speaker 2: games are counted towards his suspension, and he may return
- 40:54Speaker 2: on Tuesday, October 20th. So a little news there on
- 40:57Speaker 2: the front office of the San Francisco 49ers. Polymarket, Ohio
- 41:03Speaker 2: State getting the bulk of the money, and the public,
- 41:05Speaker 2: 84% in on the Buckeyes, 16% on Iowa. And again,
- 41:09Speaker 2: game day, there's a lot of groaning about this. Game
- 41:11Speaker 2: day is going to Iowa, Ohio State tomorrow. Most people
- 41:15Speaker 2: expect this to be a blowout. I would say that
- 41:18Speaker 2: eight of ten times it probably will be a blowout.
- 41:21Speaker 2: You know, if you go look at, let me go
- 41:24Speaker 2: do this real quick, if we can pull this in.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Much like Mississippi State and Alabama, Ohio State and Iowa
- 41:37Speaker 2: have a very lopsided rivalry. Ohio State has won 48 times,
- 41:41Speaker 2: Iowa 15 times, three ties. And, you know, they haven't
- 41:45Speaker 2: played a whole lot over the last, 25 years, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,
- 41:49Speaker 2: only 10 times, uh, over the last 25 years, 2024,
- 41:52Speaker 2: Ohio state won 35 to seven. They won 54 to 10, 2022.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Iowa actually got a win in 2017, 55 to 24. Um,
- 41:56Speaker 2: and then a couple other times it was a close one, 34, 24,
- 41:58Speaker 2: back in 2010, Ohio state won 20 to 17, but
- 41:59Speaker 2: they vacated that that was going to be shoegate or
- 42:00Speaker 2: no tattoo gate, tattoo gate. And then, uh, Ohio State
- 42:17Speaker 2: won 27-24. I mean, I guess it could be a
- 42:18Speaker 2: close game, maybe. But a lot of people not happy
- 42:21Speaker 2: that game day is going there, as most people, you know,
- 42:24Speaker 2: even polymarket, the money's coming in on Iowa. Florida, Missouri,
- 42:28Speaker 2: most of the money's coming in on Florida, 66% on Florida,
- 42:31Speaker 2: 34% on Missouri. And college football player buyouts are about
- 42:37Speaker 2: to take center stage as retention talks begin in earnest
- 42:41Speaker 2: over the next two weeks, two to four weeks, reports
- 42:43Speaker 2: Pete Nacos. Quote, half of the people Think the buyouts
- 42:46Speaker 2: aren't legally enforceable. The other half don't report them. The
- 42:50Speaker 2: other half fight them. How many halves do they have?
- 42:53Speaker 2: If you really need a player bad enough, you're not
- 42:56Speaker 2: going to let a buyout hold you back, an SEC
- 42:58Speaker 2: front office reporter or front office operator reported. We're brought
- 43:02Speaker 2: to you by the MHSAA. Officially become official today, 601-924-6400.
