- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. And this is that time of week where
- 0:24Speaker 1: we have a hater join us, coming to us live
- 0:26Speaker 1: from D.C. Check him out on the Ranger tailgate. And
- 0:30Speaker 1: please note he has a framed jersey behind him with
- 0:33Speaker 1: his last name, not because he liked the player, just because.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It says Anderson on it. Joel Anderson, what's going on?
- 0:40Speaker 3: What kind of introduction is that?
- 0:43Speaker 4: What do you want this podcast episode to be? What
- 0:47Speaker 4: do you mean? What do you want it to be?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Look, I have identified you.
- 0:52Speaker 4: In the way that.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I've identified you the way the audience knows you and
- 1:00Speaker 1: recognizes you. So once I say that, they're like, oh,
- 1:03Speaker 1: it's going to be Joel.
- 1:04Speaker 4: No, no, no. People know me for, I would hope,
- 1:07Speaker 4: some of my other work, you know, about Clarence Thomas,
- 1:10Speaker 4: Slow Burn 8, Slow Burn 6, the L.A. Riots, the
- 1:14Speaker 4: piece I wrote on Michael Sam.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we told them about that.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We told them about that when you was the fastest
- 1:19Speaker 1: 10-year-old in America.
- 1:20Speaker 4: See, I mean, you know, I mean, look, I just
- 1:23Speaker 4: want everybody that watches this show to see what is
- 1:27Speaker 4: going on here.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I'm not even.
- 1:28Speaker 4: What? I gave you.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I have not said anything negative about both. Hold on,
- 1:31Speaker 4: hold on, hold on.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I got attacked.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Hold on, hold on.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I got to tell you, I want to be clear.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You seem to be taking the 10 year old thing personally,
- 1:39Speaker 1: as if the only, the only reason I know this
- 1:41Speaker 1: is not because you told us about it repeated.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I just kind of felt like you
- 1:45Speaker 4: just leaped over. You left over a lot of other things.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I was going through a list of some of my,
- 1:49Speaker 4: you know, I was, in fact, I was going to
- 1:51Speaker 4: bring up my LinkedIn and go through all my honors
- 1:54Speaker 4: and achievements. And I was going to read them off here.
- 1:56Speaker 4: So people know that there's more to me than running
- 1:58Speaker 4: fast when I was 10 years old. And, allegedly being
- 2:02Speaker 4: a hater and i don't think i'm a hater at
- 2:03Speaker 4: all and i don't think.
- 2:04Speaker 1: People really think that division.
- 2:07Speaker 4: One really believe that i'm.
- 2:08Speaker 2: A hater division one college athlete.
- 2:11Speaker 3: There you go thank you i appreciate that man thanks.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Because if you start rattling off your achievements that's gonna
- 2:16Speaker 1: give me some professional ptsd that i don't necessarily need.
- 2:21Speaker 3: What what professional ptsd.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Listen to me now, believe me later on.
- 2:27Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
- 2:29Speaker 3: I got you.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I got you. Anyway, I mentioned you on the Ranger
- 2:33Speaker 1: tailgate with Van Lathan and Tay Frazier, both of whom,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I mean, I guess TCU has a football team this year.
- 2:40Speaker 1: We just don't ever talk about it, but that's better
- 2:42Speaker 1: than they football teams. They got LSU and North Carolina,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and you would much rather have a football team that
- 2:46Speaker 1: don't nobody really talk about than be like them.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Well, I mean, that's a hell of a windup.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Of those teams, Of those three programs, mine is the
- 2:54Speaker 4: only one that has recently played in a national championship game.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But fair enough.
- 2:57Speaker 1: This is true. And the only one to lose by
- 3:00Speaker 1: 50-something points.
- 3:02Speaker 3: You got to be in it to win it, though.
- 3:03Speaker 2: That's very true.
- 3:04Speaker 3: You got to be in it to win it.
- 3:04Speaker 2: You're not wrong.
- 3:05Speaker 3: You got to be in it. You're not wrong.
- 3:07Speaker 4: And I mean, they are going, it is very weird
- 3:09Speaker 4: how they're going through like really miserable football years at
- 3:13Speaker 4: the same time we all got thrown together. Because I mean,
- 3:17Speaker 4: I thought North, I didn't think North Carolina would be good.
- 3:21Speaker 4: But I didn't think they would be as bad as
- 3:22Speaker 4: they were. Although I will say they do seem to
- 3:24Speaker 4: be better the last couple of weeks. The last couple
- 3:26Speaker 4: of games.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Are doing better.
- 3:27Speaker 4: And the LSU thing, man, like. What can we I mean. I,
- 3:35Speaker 4: I think that all of them are being ridiculous.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, because you believe that Penn State should not have
- 3:41Speaker 1: fired Franklin and you believe that LSU should not have
- 3:43Speaker 1: fired Brian Kelly.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I think that the odds are that at some point
- 3:47Speaker 4: in the next five to 10 years, that one of
- 3:49Speaker 4: those guys would figure it out.
- 3:50Speaker 3: If not both of them, that they would get eventually right.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Fast.
- 3:53Speaker 2: How do you define, figure it out?
- 3:55Speaker 3: Well, they would go in a championship, national championship, a
- 3:58Speaker 3: national championship.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Yeah. I think that one of them would just cause
- 4:00Speaker 4: you know, some years things don't break your way. You
- 4:03Speaker 4: have fumbles or whatever, but then one year, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 4: Ohio state's replacing a quarterback or they lose a bunch
- 4:09Speaker 4: of guys to injury or Ryan day decides he wants to,
- 4:12Speaker 4: Be the coach of the New York Giants. Things like
- 4:14Speaker 4: that happen. And eventually, they would be in position to
- 4:17Speaker 4: seize on that. Because, I mean, I just, I wonder
- 4:20Speaker 4: if Brian Kelly had another, because LSU should be used
- 4:25Speaker 4: to eight and four. That's the thing. I dig that.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Acting like they're too good to go eight and four.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Oh. They acting like they're too good to go eight
- 4:32Speaker 4: and four. And that is really the story of their program,
- 4:35Speaker 4: but for the exceptional few seasons, right?
- 4:37Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:38Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But let me ask you a question on that front, right?
- 4:42Speaker 1: Because I agree with you on that, that they are,
- 4:45Speaker 1: LSU is plus or minus nine, maybe nine and a half.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Like that's where the line pretty much gets set in
- 4:50Speaker 1: most years, right? But if you settle for plus or
- 4:54Speaker 1: minus nine, will you not always be plus or minus nine?
- 4:58Speaker 1: I feel like at some point you have to show
- 4:59Speaker 1: a little proof of concept. Like I think the problem
- 5:01Speaker 1: for Franklin and why I thought, okay, you guys had
- 5:03Speaker 1: to do this. It wasn't about the wins and losses.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's which wins and which losses. And at some point
- 5:09Speaker 1: you got to win the ones that matter. So it
- 5:11Speaker 1: was very interesting. Mack Brown survived losing five years in
- 5:14Speaker 1: a row to Oklahoma when he was at Texas. In
- 5:16Speaker 1: an embarrassing fashion.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Right.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But he was kicking A & M' s teeth in along
- 5:21Speaker 1: the way. And look, he was one terrible pass interference
- 5:25Speaker 1: call in 2004 away. From losing that job. The Kansas
- 5:29Speaker 1: call where Mark Mangino was like, the fix is in.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And I was like, I understand why you feel that way, brother.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It looks that way. But I guess for schools on
- 5:41Speaker 1: that level, look, LSU has won three national championships in
- 5:43Speaker 1: the last 25 years. Right. I get maybe why they
- 5:47Speaker 1: feel that way, but at the same time with you,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I feel where you're like, okay, these results are not
- 5:52Speaker 1: terribly out of line, but do you not add something
- 5:55Speaker 1: to the fact that don't nobody like that man?
- 5:57Speaker 4: Oh, that is the whole ball game with Brian Kelly.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I knew that he wasn't liked. Did you know that
- 6:06Speaker 4: he was the most reviled man in college football? Because
- 6:09Speaker 4: that is certainly what it seems to be. It has
- 6:11Speaker 4: been very hard to even find former players to say, hey, thanks,
- 6:15Speaker 4: Brian Kelly, for believing in me.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Hey, man. I called a former player when he took
- 6:21Speaker 1: the LSU job because, again, I was struck that he
- 6:24Speaker 1: did not bring a single assistant with him. And a
- 6:27Speaker 1: bunch of them stayed with that wavy-headed boy at Notre Dame, right?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Which seems like a very dangerous prospect, by the way.
- 6:35Speaker 1: That was a risky play.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Let me say with the brother here at Notre Dame,
- 6:38Speaker 4: or let me go to Brian Kelly winning coach going
- 6:40Speaker 4: to LSU.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Hall of Fame level coach, right? Now, look, I don't
- 6:43Speaker 1: know if Brian Kelly asked any of them to come, whatever,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but I asked a former player of his, I was like,
- 6:49Speaker 1: so is there anything that we're getting wrong here about
- 6:51Speaker 1: Brian Kelly? And he said, just no. Like he wasn't
- 6:56Speaker 1: mad about it. He didn't express any disdain. Like he
- 6:59Speaker 1: seems to just not have relationships at all.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I was reading the top of a
- 7:05Speaker 4: story from ESPN like a few years ago where it
- 7:08Speaker 4: talked about some assistants that had worked with him at
- 7:09Speaker 4: Central Michigan. And they thought they were getting invited to
- 7:12Speaker 4: a party at his house. And it turned out he
- 7:14Speaker 4: had them doing work. You remember, it's kind of like
- 7:16Speaker 4: the Hakeem situation when he was in the McDonald's house.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You thought you got invited, now you got to park cars.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah, right, yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Gave him a little coat.
- 7:23Speaker 4: And they were just like, and I learned through that
- 7:25Speaker 4: experience that if I ever got in that position, I
- 7:26Speaker 4: would never treat somebody that way. And I was like,
- 7:30Speaker 4: this is a quote, too, in a story.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I believe there was a name attached to it.
- 7:35Speaker 3: There was a.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Name attached to it. It's like, yo, people do not
- 7:38Speaker 4: have any problem going off on that dude. And yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 4: I mean, he clearly.
- 7:42Speaker 5: The two people involved you're referencing are Matt LaFleur and
- 7:46Speaker 5: Robert Sala.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And they were on the record.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Robert Sala.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Ryan rarely jumps in on the two bad episodes. It
- 7:54Speaker 1: had to jump in because LSU fan has run through
- 7:59Speaker 1: all of these.
- 8:00Speaker 4: This is why his ass ain't here no more.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Like Brian Kelly is like eight different levels of the
- 8:06Speaker 1: draft day movie, but nobody came to his birthday party.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Right. Like it's, it's all.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And look, it is. He's not the only thing about this.
- 8:15Speaker 1: As much as you think Nick Saban is a jerk.
- 8:18Speaker 2: People don't talk about Nick Saban like this.
- 8:20Speaker 3: No.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Not even close.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I mean, so there's two things with Nick Saban. And
- 8:24Speaker 4: I always kind of feel like people are scared of
- 8:26Speaker 4: him for whatever reason.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Like, they call him Daddy.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yes, that's wild.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Homeboy had to diss his homeboy, Steve Sarkeesian. He's like, hey, man,
- 8:36Speaker 4: Daddy's going to be on me if I don't do it.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Was that Pete Golding?
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think it was Pete Golding. It was, but hey, hey, brother.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I don't care what the circumstances or situations are. Could not...
- 8:47Speaker 1: be me. We're going to have to come up with
- 8:50Speaker 1: a different name.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Oh, you're not going to call another man daddy?
- 8:53Speaker 1: We got to draw the line somewhere, baby.
- 8:55Speaker 2: We got to draw the line. We got to draw
- 8:57Speaker 2: the line somewhere.
- 8:59Speaker 1: If somebody getting called daddy and is not your actual daddy,
- 9:03Speaker 1: that is a title that one must earn and one
- 9:06Speaker 1: that Nick Saban cannot.
- 9:08Speaker 2: At least not for me.
- 9:10Speaker 4: I mean, someday Nick Saban has to come into my
- 9:13Speaker 4: house and meet my family and I'm referring to you
- 9:16Speaker 4: as daddy. You know what I'm saying?
- 9:17Speaker 3: In front of my wife and kids.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I just, I just, I don't know.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Maybe that's toxic masculinity or whatever, but.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I imagine, imagine the way your woman is going to
- 9:26Speaker 1: look at you when you call this man daddy.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yes. Yes. I mean, bro, I just, so, so, but
- 9:33Speaker 4: obviously something is special with him, but also he's excellent.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Like his, the, the, the, you know, it's also, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 4: So we saw Brian Kelly dancing with recruits, right? And
- 9:45Speaker 4: it looked goofy as hell.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We've seen Nick Saban do the Cupid Shuffle, and he
- 9:49Speaker 4: looked like he was on beat, on time with all
- 9:51Speaker 4: of it.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:52Speaker 4: So obviously, he's also just got a little swag. He
- 9:55Speaker 4: carries himself different. Brian Kelly ain't got none of that, man.
- 9:58Speaker 2: No.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And at a place where they like their coaches to
- 10:01Speaker 1: be fun in some form or fashion like Louisiana is
- 10:05Speaker 1: not a boring place like it's just you got to
- 10:08Speaker 1: provide some measure of entertainment but let me tell you
- 10:10Speaker 1: our last show we talked about the fact that it
- 10:12Speaker 1: doesn't feel like any jobs are good anymore no right
- 10:15Speaker 1: like there's no the pressure at every job is now
- 10:20Speaker 1: professional caliber pressure. And you're looking at a three, four,
- 10:24Speaker 1: five year sort of schedule.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Because again, we've talked about this before.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It is entirely possible that Auburn is going to come
- 10:30Speaker 1: open as a job. Like that one is still on
- 10:32Speaker 1: the board as one that could come out there. Florida State,
- 10:35Speaker 1: I don't think any of us think it's possible that
- 10:36Speaker 1: they don't make a move. I think North Carolina has
- 10:38Speaker 1: no choice but to make a move. How much money
- 10:43Speaker 1: would you have to pay to get somebody to sign
- 10:45Speaker 1: up for whatever the fuck it is that they over
- 10:47Speaker 1: there doing? Virginia Tech, we forget Virginia Tech is still
- 10:50Speaker 1: on the board. That job came open. There was another
- 10:53Speaker 1: job that came open that same week. UCLA, still out there.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I think Arkansas is going to do the hilarious thing.
- 11:02Speaker 4: With that job.
- 11:03Speaker 5: I mean.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I actually kind of can't blame him.
- 11:05Speaker 4: No, because who else are you going to get?
- 11:07Speaker 1: And who else are you going to get?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and he wants to be there. He's not a
- 11:10Speaker 4: bad coach. No.
- 11:12Speaker 3: He didn't get fired because he was bad.
- 11:13Speaker 1: No, he was the best coach they've had since Frank Broyles.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Yeah, man. Yeah. So it's just like I kind of
- 11:20Speaker 4: can see why they might just want to be. We
- 11:22Speaker 4: can sit this out. We got somebody that already knows
- 11:25Speaker 4: how we like things here.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And we ain't got to pay him that much because
- 11:27Speaker 1: there is no competition to hire him.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Uh-uh that's right it's just it's just you we know
- 11:32Speaker 4: we know what the market is for you right now
- 11:33Speaker 4: bro think.
- 11:34Speaker 1: About this he has people who go with him to
- 11:36Speaker 1: different jobs and brian kelly doesn't yeah man bobby petrino
- 11:39Speaker 1: is who we're talking about for those of you who
- 11:41Speaker 1: don't know there are people who are loyal to bobby
- 11:44Speaker 1: petrino and nobody's loyal.
- 11:46Speaker 4: To brian i have played for guys that people hated
- 11:50Speaker 4: you know what i mean like just no and i've
- 11:51Speaker 4: just never seen people talk about a person in the
- 11:54Speaker 4: way that Brian Kelly has been talked about. But I wonder,
- 11:57Speaker 4: I mean, the thing is he's still a good football coach.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I think he'll get one of these jobs.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I think it's possible.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Is it a job that he's willing to take? Cause
- 12:05Speaker 1: he's 64 years old.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Well, that's a good thing. So like, listen, what if,
- 12:08Speaker 4: what if I give you one of these two jobs,
- 12:10Speaker 4: Michigan state or Wisconsin, if one of those come up
- 12:12Speaker 4: and they hired him, that's not a bad hire for them.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Is it? I, it's not a bad hire for them.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I don't, so I don't think it's a great hire
- 12:19Speaker 1: for Wisconsin because I don't think you can run the
- 12:21Speaker 1: kind of offense Brian Kelly wants to run. and be
- 12:24Speaker 1: successful at Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin, we're just going to
- 12:27Speaker 1: line up and mash you out.
- 12:29Speaker 2: That's what they do. Michigan State, maybe.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The thing is, he has grown accustomed to a lifestyle,
- 12:40Speaker 1: shall we say, as it relates to coaching.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I'm not talking about the money, just the places he's been.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Golfing. I think it's a giant step down from what
- 12:49Speaker 1: is possible at Notre Dame and at LSU to Michigan
- 12:54Speaker 1: State and Wisconsin. I think that Michigan State in particular,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I think that is a huge drop from what like
- 13:01Speaker 1: getting used to a job where, look, they mad at
- 13:03Speaker 1: you for eight and four at LSU. They'll be fairly
- 13:06Speaker 1: happy with you for nine and three at Michigan State.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And I don't think he wants to live that life again.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I hear. See, to me, that sounds like a good
- 13:14Speaker 4: job because that's when you were talking about this. I
- 13:16Speaker 4: was like, you said there's no good. Are there any
- 13:17Speaker 4: good jobs? You know what sounds like a good job?
- 13:20Speaker 3: Ole Miss.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But I don't think Ole Miss is a good job anymore.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I think Lane is blowing the box.
- 13:24Speaker 3: You think he's blowing it up now?
- 13:25Speaker 1: I mean, they've been going to Sugar Bowls, right? Like,
- 13:28Speaker 1: they've been going to these levels of games. They are
- 13:30Speaker 1: probably going to finish in the top 10 this year.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I don't. I think that used to be. So we
- 13:38Speaker 1: talked about this. I don't think even Kentucky is what
- 13:41Speaker 1: Kentucky used to be, where if you can go seven,
- 13:44Speaker 1: eight wins every year and just don't embarrass them, you'll
- 13:48Speaker 1: make your money and everything will be okay. I don't
- 13:51Speaker 1: think it's like that anymore. I'm curious if you still
- 13:54Speaker 1: think that that's something that people will be able to
- 13:55Speaker 1: pull off in the Big Ten and the SEC.
- 13:59Speaker 2: You might be able to pull it off. I put
- 14:00Speaker 2: it like this. you can't go back to nine wins
- 14:03Speaker 2: a year at Clemson anymore. For example, you know what
- 14:05Speaker 2: I mean?
- 14:06Speaker 4: I think so. The thing is, is will fans ever
- 14:09Speaker 4: catch up with the reality of modern college football, right? Like,
- 14:12Speaker 4: will they be able to say, you know what? This
- 14:14Speaker 4: is a lot more like the NFL. They're playing a
- 14:16Speaker 4: lot more competitive conference games. You can loop, you can
- 14:19Speaker 4: take a couple of losses and shoot man. Rosters aren't
- 14:22Speaker 4: as deep as they used to be. So if you
- 14:24Speaker 4: get a few injuries, it can really take you out
- 14:27Speaker 4: of the running.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:28Speaker 3: So I, If fans.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Can kind of come to that understanding, would it be like, man,
- 14:33Speaker 4: just because the Chiefs lost, it doesn't mean they're sorry, right?
- 14:37Speaker 4: Or one year the Bengals don't make the playoffs and
- 14:39Speaker 4: people are like, oh, that's horrible. People have sort of
- 14:42Speaker 4: an understanding that things are going to happen on a
- 14:44Speaker 4: year-to-year basis. But as long as you're consistently good and
- 14:47Speaker 4: consistently contending, people will understand.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But what do you call contending consistently?
- 14:54Speaker 4: Just being able to make the playoffs and have an
- 14:56Speaker 4: outside shot at the championship.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So you're saying, and I'm assuming that when you say
- 15:00Speaker 1: that you mean for like a certain echelon of program, right?
- 15:04Speaker 4: Like, so that's the L that's the LSU should be
- 15:07Speaker 4: able to accept eight and four every night.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Again, is what I'm saying.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Every now and again.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yes. Um, how often, how often should they win 11?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Cause Brian Kelly won 10 twice in.
- 15:19Speaker 3: A 10 year span for four, 11.
- 15:22Speaker 1: 4 out of 10 at 11?
- 15:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I feel like you have undercut your argument because that
- 15:29Speaker 1: feels like a lot of 11s.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I mean, man, because you're going to get weak schedules sometimes.
- 15:34Speaker 4: So that would be 11 and 1. Maybe I should
- 15:35Speaker 4: say 10.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yeah, keep in mind they got to play Alabama every year.
- 15:37Speaker 3: That's right. They got to play Alabama every year.
- 15:39Speaker 4: And Texas A & M every year.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Tough, yeah. So, yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Okay, maybe I'll go back to 10. Maybe I'll go
- 15:46Speaker 4: 10 wins every 3 to 4.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And by the way, the 10 will be a 10
- 15:49Speaker 1: and 2. I think we need to specify.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Ten and two.
- 15:53Speaker 4: So you got to accept that you're going to lose
- 15:54Speaker 4: a couple games, right? But you know what, Bo? The
- 15:57Speaker 4: way I was going to say it, the piece that
- 15:59Speaker 4: has blown all this up and makes people unreasonable.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Kurt Cignetti and Clark Lee.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yes, it is.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Yes, it is.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Look, Kurt Cignetti.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I think Kurt Cignetti even more than Clark Lee.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Man, dog. Kentucky's looking at Indiana and they're like, what?
- 16:11Speaker 3: They're right there.
- 16:11Speaker 4: What are you?
- 16:14Speaker 3: How they doing this?
- 16:17Speaker 1: With the James Madison All-Star. Yeah, bro. I know I've
- 16:19Speaker 1: talked about this many times on this show, but it's
- 16:22Speaker 1: a bunch of guys he brought. Like when Deion went
- 16:24Speaker 1: to Colorado and said he was bringing his luggage and
- 16:26Speaker 1: it was Louie. Dog, he rolled up with duffel bags.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Dog, he just.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Still flossy.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I mean, and they look great.
- 16:34Speaker 4: They look great.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I don't know what happened.
- 16:37Speaker 4: They put Indiana uniforms on, and all of a sudden
- 16:40Speaker 4: they became Oregon, you know? And so I'm sure Kentucky
- 16:45Speaker 4: is like, they don't even have boys in that state.
- 16:47Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? They don't even got, where
- 16:48Speaker 4: are they getting these people from, you know? And so
- 16:50Speaker 4: I'm sure that they're looking at that, and probably to
- 16:52Speaker 4: a less extent, T.J., like Clark Lee in Vanderbilt, and
- 16:55Speaker 4: Vanderbilt's bullying LSU.
- 16:57Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 16:58Speaker 1: Well, hold on.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Think about this.
- 17:00Speaker 1: James Franklin won some games at Vanderbilt. Like, I want
- 17:04Speaker 1: to say he got some wins over Georgia, but it
- 17:05Speaker 1: was like, I mean, I guess this is down as LSU,
- 17:07Speaker 1: but it was like kind of down Georgia. But James
- 17:10Speaker 1: Franklin parlayed that into this Penn State job with a
- 17:13Speaker 1: couple of seasons in the top 25. And by the way, deserved.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Well done.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Vanderbilt so hard.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Clark Lee could not have done this without what
- 17:22Speaker 1: Franklin had done prior to kind of legitimize the place. Absolutely.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But I'm saying, if what James Franklin did at Vanderbilt
- 17:30Speaker 1: could get you Penn State, what exactly can Clark Lee
- 17:34Speaker 1: get out of doing this at Vanderbilt? Because I don't
- 17:36Speaker 1: hear his name being talked about as a guy to
- 17:40Speaker 1: go to LSU.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Right. I mean, because he's home. Vanderbilt is home for him. So, yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 4: I know. I know because Jonathan Smith. See, I bet
- 17:51Speaker 4: Jonathan Smith. This is what these guys need to be
- 17:53Speaker 4: thinking about. Jonathan Smith, they loved him in Oregon State, man. Yes.
- 17:56Speaker 1: But to be fair, they ain't got a conference. Oregon
- 18:00Speaker 1: State became a completely different job.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Yeah, right. And when he left, that's right. He had
- 18:04Speaker 4: to go somewhere. But I wonder if they just don't
- 18:07Speaker 4: think they can dislodge Clark. I mean, the thing is,
- 18:09Speaker 4: if that's the guy you want, you have to make
- 18:13Speaker 4: him say no. Because, I mean, the reality of Vanderbilt
- 18:16Speaker 4: is that he's not.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Going to be able to do this year over year
- 18:20Speaker 3: over year.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Right? Well, hold on.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question on that. Clearly, Indiana
- 18:28Speaker 1: thinks that you can do it year over year there
- 18:29Speaker 1: because they're paying that coach like you can.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Right. Right. And I'll be honest with you.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I thought that this new world order would lead to
- 18:36Speaker 1: Indiana just being a feeder for other programs. Right. Like
- 18:40Speaker 1: Michael Pennix going to Washington after having been at Indiana.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I thought that that's what it was going to be.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I guess it never dawned on me that they could
- 18:46Speaker 1: ever be a 10-11 win program.
- 18:48Speaker 2: But they look like they're going to be buyers.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I mean, I've never been to Bloomington. Have you been
- 18:53Speaker 3: to Bloomington before?
- 18:55Speaker 4: I've heard it's nice.
- 18:57Speaker 3: They were good at basketball once.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, man. There ain't that many
- 19:04Speaker 1: states that truly worry me.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Man.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I don't know if you've done any driving through Indiana.
- 19:11Speaker 2: The Indiana that ain't got no dots.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Oh, well, yeah.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Did not like it.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Are you talking about Hammond?
- 19:18Speaker 2: No, that's Illinois. Not as Indiana. You're right.
- 19:20Speaker 3: No, no.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I'm talking about Southern Indiana. I have been to Hammond.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And I will say about Hammond, the project got white
- 19:26Speaker 1: people in it. And that is, you're right. But yeah, Hammond, Indiana,
- 19:31Speaker 1: which is close to Chicago. That's why I said Illinois.
- 19:33Speaker 1: But I'm talking about down south.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that Bloomington stuff.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I don't know where exactly it is. I'm just telling you.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I done done a lot of driving, man. I've done
- 19:41Speaker 1: the east of Kentucky. I've done all the deep south.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I've done all the west. I've done all I-10. I've
- 19:46Speaker 1: done all I-40. Indiana felt a little different.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Really, man?
- 19:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt a little different.
- 19:51Speaker 3: I could see that.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember what state felt like that for me.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Maybe the south Georgia actually kind of felt like that
- 19:57Speaker 4: to me a little bit.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. South Georgia's a little worrisome. But yeah, I've
- 20:02Speaker 1: done all the way across Kentucky from like Louisville going
- 20:05Speaker 1: back to North Carolina. So it's Kentucky with a little
- 20:07Speaker 1: dovey ain't.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Throwing in there.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Okay. Yeah, that's all right.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I do remember I went to get some gas in
- 20:14Speaker 1: eastern Kentucky, and that was the most transactional encounter I've
- 20:17Speaker 1: ever had in the south.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Really?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it felt like going to the bodega up north. Boom, boom, go.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Get out of here?
- 20:25Speaker 2: He ain't have nothing to say to me. I ain't
- 20:27Speaker 2: have nothing to say to him.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Man, that's crazy.
- 20:31Speaker 4: It's funny about those areas because- Florida low-key got a
- 20:34Speaker 4: lot of those spots. Like just even within the Tampa
- 20:37Speaker 4: Bay area, they used to, oh man, I'll never forget.
- 20:40Speaker 4: I used to have to work Sundays in Pasco County.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Pasco County has, I'm trying to think what the Lake,
- 20:47Speaker 4: Lando Lakes would be one of the cities there. So
- 20:50Speaker 4: I don't know if that, or Dade City, Dade City
- 20:52Speaker 4: is a place.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It's a Pasco.
- 20:54Speaker 2: That's where Pennix is from, right?
- 20:55Speaker 1: Pennix is from, right.
- 20:56Speaker 4: So there's one side of the county that is very
- 21:00Speaker 4: rural and another part that's very suburban and kind of
- 21:03Speaker 4: close to the water.
- 21:04Speaker 3: So one day I get a call. They say, oh, man,
- 21:06Speaker 3: there's been a.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Shooting over on Teak Street in Newport Ritchie.
- 21:12Speaker 3: And so I look this, you know, I'm looking it
- 21:14Speaker 3: up to see. And I see.
- 21:16Speaker 4: In the archives, Teak Street Nazi Compound. I told the editor,
- 21:24Speaker 4: I was like, bro, I'm sorry. It was the only
- 21:27Speaker 4: time I've ever been like, nah, I'm not doing it.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Because they had killed, the reason it was famous, because
- 21:32Speaker 4: they had killed a black dude who was over there
- 21:34Speaker 4: to see some girl that he was trying to visit.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And I was like, bro, I just... I can't do it, man.
- 21:39Speaker 4: So there's some spots even within, like, Tampa that are
- 21:42Speaker 4: kind of like, I don't want to be over there, man.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing about playing college football that the
- 21:47Speaker 1: young boys don't necessarily know to inquire about is, like,
- 21:51Speaker 1: know your surroundings because you could be signing up for, like,
- 21:55Speaker 1: campus is super dope wherever campus may be, but it's
- 21:59Speaker 1: a few. Like, Penn State is one of those where
- 22:00Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, I don't think I would do that.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, we say pencil tucking.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Pencil tucking. I don't think I would do that. They
- 22:11Speaker 1: clearly get players, and they spent the money, and they
- 22:13Speaker 1: got the dudes there, and Philly guys still want to
- 22:16Speaker 1: go there, and that still produces a decent number of people,
- 22:19Speaker 1: and you can get New Jersey guys and all of that.
- 22:21Speaker 1: But that feels a lot like College Station East. And
- 22:25Speaker 1: by the way, College Station is just whack.
- 22:28Speaker 2: College Station does.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Not scare me.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Doesn't scare you.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 22:35Speaker 2: No, it doesn't have that. It's just college station.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Well, yeah. So college station is funny because yeah, like
- 22:42Speaker 4: when you grow up in Houston, if you have never
- 22:44Speaker 4: been up there, you assume that it's kind of close.
- 22:46Speaker 3: I thought it was just more black than it was
- 22:48Speaker 3: up there than it actually is.
- 22:49Speaker 4: And yeah, it's in a very kind of rural area,
- 22:52Speaker 4: but you know what A & M got, man?
- 22:55Speaker 3: They got them.
- 22:57Speaker 4: A & M got them, man. A & M got them, bro.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Shout out to the Southwest Black Leadership Conference they used
- 23:05Speaker 4: to have down there every fall.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It sounds like they was there for the conference.
- 23:09Speaker 3: There was other stuff. I can't say what it is.
- 23:12Speaker 4: I don't remember what it is. But it was not,
- 23:15Speaker 4: I could kind of understand going there and being like, well,
- 23:19Speaker 4: I took my wife through there once, Janae, and she
- 23:21Speaker 4: said it looked like a farm and an office complex.
- 23:25Speaker 3: And I'll say, yeah, okay.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Texas A & M got a zillion people, so they
- 23:29Speaker 1: got something, but I'm not.
- 23:31Speaker 3: It could be fun there.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I know.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I'm nodding.
- 23:35Speaker 3: It could be fun there. The Penn State thing to
- 23:37Speaker 3: me is more.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Because I'm like, okay, we don't have any proof or
- 23:42Speaker 4: concept that brothers actually will choose Penn State without some
- 23:47Speaker 4: exceptional circumstances. Joe Paterno was a whole different time, and
- 23:52Speaker 4: they were taking brothers.
- 23:53Speaker 3: way before the schools in the South were.
- 23:55Speaker 4: So they had access to talent that a lot of
- 23:56Speaker 4: other people didn't have, and Joe Paterno promoted a certain
- 23:59Speaker 4: kind of a culture that could have been welcoming to
- 24:03Speaker 4: the brothers that wanted to play there. All right, he
- 24:06Speaker 4: goes away. They get Bill O'Brien for a couple years.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Then you get James Franklin, who's a really charismatic brother
- 24:11Speaker 4: who can recruit the DMV pretty well. Like, this is
- 24:13Speaker 4: his area, getting up and down here. I mean, can...
- 24:18Speaker 4: Matt rule get the same kind of brother that want
- 24:21Speaker 4: to come now.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I mean, but they, but so this is raises the question,
- 24:24Speaker 1: which is, these are the things that have mattered forever.
- 24:28Speaker 1: And how much do they matter now that we talking
- 24:30Speaker 1: about paying people?
- 24:32Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Well, because I, cause I mean, I think at some
- 24:34Speaker 1: point though, that there's gotta be some, like the market
- 24:39Speaker 1: for players can't have, but so much variance at a
- 24:41Speaker 1: certain level, like these things on the margins, I feel
- 24:44Speaker 1: like still have to matter because, um to a degree
- 24:47Speaker 1: especially if you're dealing with kid the kids that come
- 24:48Speaker 1: from means which is a lot more players than at
- 24:51Speaker 1: least it feels like a lot more players than it
- 24:53Speaker 1: used to be so come some of our like adages
- 24:56Speaker 1: about coming out of poverty that don't seem to apply
- 24:58Speaker 1: nearly as much as they used to to these players
- 25:01Speaker 1: um but i mean no but i do i do
- 25:04Speaker 1: think you raise a fair question now can matt real
- 25:08Speaker 1: do it but to be fair man brother's been signing
- 25:10Speaker 1: up to play for white boys forever like That's true.
- 25:13Speaker 2: That's not a new situation.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I mean, that's true.
- 25:15Speaker 4: That's true.
- 25:16Speaker 3: But they ain't signed up to play for every white
- 25:17Speaker 3: boy at every place.
- 25:18Speaker 1: No.
- 25:18Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 25:19Speaker 2: No.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Like, Ole Miss, it was until very recently that people
- 25:23Speaker 4: were like, all right.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I still can't believe they do it.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, right. Because we come from a time where you
- 25:29Speaker 4: could turn on TV and they just had them flags
- 25:31Speaker 4: blowing in the wind in the stands, man. Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Like.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Even Tommy Tuberville had to be like, could y'all stop
- 25:37Speaker 4: doing that?
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Y'all are making my job hard. Please stop doing that.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Y'all, you're scaring the bros.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 25:43Speaker 4: You're scaring the bros. You're scaring the bros. But, I mean,
- 25:47Speaker 4: Ole Miss has changed. And you actually made a really
- 25:50Speaker 4: good point because I think about a lot of how
- 25:53Speaker 4: the demographics have changed and sort of like the cultural
- 25:55Speaker 4: reality for elite football.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Players has changed.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Because it ain't like the old days, man, where your
- 26:02Speaker 4: five-star is Stady Yates.
- 26:04Speaker 3: They went Yates for all four years or whatever. Like,
- 26:07Speaker 3: dumb kid.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Bobby Taylor had a kid.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Bobby Taylor who played college ball at Notre Dame and
- 26:13Speaker 1: played for the Eagles in the league.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Played for the Eagles. Six foot four corner.
- 26:18Speaker 4: His kid went to a school inside the city limits,
- 26:21Speaker 4: Houston Heights, and then he finished at Katy. And I
- 26:24Speaker 4: was just thinking about like, oh, that's the kind of
- 26:26Speaker 4: stuff that happens now.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That's a very Florida thing that really wasn't happening in
- 26:31Speaker 1: Texas before.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Kids will move out or plan out in Allen or,
- 26:37Speaker 4: you know, one of them, you know, we see brothers
- 26:40Speaker 4: playing for Westlake and Lake Travis and stuff like that now.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Stuff that just did not, usually those schools did not
- 26:46Speaker 4: have those kind of athletes.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Those alums of those schools for those who don't know Westlake,
- 26:50Speaker 1: Drew Brees High School, Lake Travis, Baker Mayfield High School,
- 26:53Speaker 1: Baker Reagan Mayfield, just so you understand the point that
- 26:56Speaker 1: we're making here.
- 26:57Speaker 4: That's right. That's right. So it was kind of, so,
- 27:00Speaker 4: you know, these kids are sort of operating, you're right.
- 27:02Speaker 4: So on that point, they operate in a different reality.
- 27:05Speaker 4: They have a very different relationship with community than we
- 27:08Speaker 4: used to have. It used to matter when, for example,
- 27:12Speaker 4: in Mizzou, Mizzou, the reason they had problems for so
- 27:14Speaker 4: long getting brothers there is that they had black media,
- 27:19Speaker 4: radio DJs in St. Louis that actively discouraged their top
- 27:23Speaker 4: black athletes from going to Mizzou. Like they would show
- 27:26Speaker 4: up at your house and be like, I can't tell
- 27:28Speaker 4: you where to go, but I wouldn't send my kid there.
- 27:30Speaker 4: And Mizzou had a real difficult time tapping into that
- 27:33Speaker 4: kind of talent because people would just that they had
- 27:36Speaker 4: just that kind of resistance but I don't even know
- 27:38Speaker 4: that that kind of community exists anymore anywhere like I
- 27:41Speaker 4: don't even know like who would be the voice that
- 27:42Speaker 4: people would listen to that would say you may not
- 27:44Speaker 4: want to go to Florida I mean you know that's
- 27:46Speaker 4: not a school that's a place that's that's sort of
- 27:50Speaker 4: hostile to you.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels much more transactional now. We don't have
- 27:54Speaker 1: that much proof of concept on this, obviously. It's a
- 27:56Speaker 1: new world that we're in. But yeah, the question is
- 27:59Speaker 1: exactly how much of those little things matter. Like Forty
- 28:01Speaker 1: was on here talking the other day, and he's right
- 28:03Speaker 1: that spending money on facilities is a bad play these
- 28:05Speaker 1: days because it makes sense to spend money on facilities
- 28:08Speaker 1: when you couldn't give the money directly to the players.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Now that feels like a bad use of money. But
- 28:14Speaker 2: at the same time, one.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Would think the facilities should matter, but something to consider.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And I say this as we go into the break,
- 28:22Speaker 1: when these coaches take these jobs, they don't go, they
- 28:25Speaker 1: don't set foot on campus. If a coach has never
- 28:30Speaker 1: been to a university, there's no time for, well, I'm
- 28:33Speaker 1: going to go take a tour, let my wife go
- 28:35Speaker 1: around and check out the schools.
- 28:37Speaker 2: There's no time for that.
- 28:38Speaker 1: These guys are deciding to go to places they've literally
- 28:41Speaker 1: never been, often with facilities they've never seen.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Well, Bo, you know what? It's actually interesting. I'm hearing
- 28:48Speaker 4: that a lot, too, about transfers now, too. People that
- 28:51Speaker 4: go in transfer portals, if they've already been through the
- 28:53Speaker 4: recruiting process, they'll pick a school not even had been
- 28:56Speaker 4: on campus there, which I'm like, That's shocking to me.
- 28:59Speaker 4: I don't know that I could do that.
- 29:02Speaker 2: If you go to a place, you already took an official.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Okay, I see that. Or there's a coach there that
- 29:06Speaker 1: you like. But yeah, to me, the idea of going
- 29:08Speaker 1: to these places, especially when you have options, is wild.
- 29:11Speaker 1: But what else are they supposed to do? Yeah, man.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I always think coaches get a bad rap on the
- 29:18Speaker 1: way that they lead these schools. There's no good way
- 29:21Speaker 1: to do it. It's not possible. You don't, hey, kids,
- 29:24Speaker 1: just giving you a heads up. I might be out
- 29:27Speaker 1: of here. But then you can't come back. Right. Right.
- 29:29Speaker 4: You're out on us.
- 29:30Speaker 1: There is no coach transfer portal and everybody understands that
- 29:34Speaker 1: you're just doing what you can. Like, it's not an option.
- 29:37Speaker 1: These moves have to be made very, very quickly. And like,
- 29:39Speaker 1: the next day you got to start recruiting you just
- 29:42Speaker 1: put on a whole new hat right and you become
- 29:45Speaker 1: an entirely different person.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Absolutely yeah it's just tough man you're right i i
- 29:50Speaker 4: look i'm not a coach apologist but i do i
- 29:53Speaker 4: i think it just kind of like we've just done,
- 29:55Speaker 4: I think people do have to kind of understand the
- 29:57Speaker 4: reality of coaches has changed a lot now, man.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Like this is a very difficult job.
- 30:01Speaker 4: And even if you've excelled at it in the previous decade,
- 30:05Speaker 4: there was some evidence that Nick Saban wasn't quite acclimating
- 30:08Speaker 4: to the new era as much as he liked, right?
- 30:10Speaker 4: Like those Alabama, those last couple of Alabama teams weren't
- 30:12Speaker 4: as good as the ones of earlier vintage. So it's,
- 30:15Speaker 4: People are going to need time to figure it out.
- 30:18Speaker 4: And because of all these shifting dynamics, you know, I mean,
- 30:21Speaker 4: a lot of people clearly going to get fired until
- 30:23Speaker 4: we finally settle into this stuff.
- 30:25Speaker 1: All right. We got some media talk coming up next.

- 31:50Speaker 4: All right.
- 31:51Speaker 1: So I talk about Hayden as Joel doing the ranger
- 31:54Speaker 1: tailgate podcast, but he also does another podcast where Brian
- 31:58Speaker 1: Curtis called the press box where he makes faces just
- 32:01Speaker 1: like the one that he made. because they be spitting
- 32:03Speaker 1: truth on there like I just spit truth so the
- 32:06Speaker 1: truth be making him scrunch his face up sometimes again.
- 32:09Speaker 4: I mean people that know me know that I love
- 32:10Speaker 4: my nobody will ever say I don't love my people
- 32:13Speaker 4: oh sorry I'm not your people well I'm just saying
- 32:17Speaker 4: you're the one that came on here treating me like.
- 32:18Speaker 2: This treating you like this.
- 32:21Speaker 4: I mean people rewind the tape you can go it's
- 32:24Speaker 4: on YouTube just go back and you can see how
- 32:26Speaker 4: Bo welcomed me onto the show it's fine you still
- 32:29Speaker 4: my brother dog I love you dog.
- 32:30Speaker 3: It's okay I'm tough. I have thick skin.
- 32:35Speaker 2: No, you don't.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I don't.
- 32:40Speaker 1: But the press box, you guys talk about media issues
- 32:43Speaker 1: and something I've seen awful announcing broach, and I think
- 32:45Speaker 1: you guys got into it a little bit on your part,
- 32:47Speaker 1: but I do think is interesting is that the stick
- 32:51Speaker 1: to sports people won, right? Like we really do just
- 32:56Speaker 1: kind of stick and ball discussions. They even find that
- 32:58Speaker 1: a lot of my content moved more in that direction,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but it's in part because it did feel in a
- 33:02Speaker 1: way like much of the audience wanted to move kind
- 33:06Speaker 1: of back in that direction.
- 33:07Speaker 2: And I do think that if you look at nine, 10.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Years ago, the topics that are kind of running the game,
- 33:13Speaker 1: we don't have a Colin Kaepernick right now, right? Like
- 33:15Speaker 1: we don't have, there is no, there's no like Joe Paterno,
- 33:19Speaker 1: Penn State scandal of the likes. Like, and I don't,
- 33:22Speaker 1: or maybe these things are happening and we just don't
- 33:23Speaker 1: talk about it. I don't have the greatest answer exactly
- 33:26Speaker 1: for that. But this gambling story, is one that felt
- 33:31Speaker 1: like it would have been wall-to-wall coverage all over the
- 33:34Speaker 1: place with a zillion different angles on how to explore
- 33:38Speaker 1: it with lots of lawyers, some who are still lawyers,
- 33:41Speaker 1: some who are lawyers that were turned sports bloggers, but
- 33:43Speaker 1: giving their read on the paperwork and everything else. And
- 33:46Speaker 1: it feels like sports media has actually somehow gotten less
- 33:51Speaker 1: interesting and less adept in the course of the last
- 33:54Speaker 1: 10 years to tackle things where I felt like we
- 33:57Speaker 1: were in a golden age 10 years ago to give
- 34:00Speaker 1: you everything you needed on a story like this. And
- 34:03Speaker 1: it doesn't feel like we're equipped to do that anymore,
- 34:06Speaker 1: especially not on television.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Well, I mean, when we can get the television, but
- 34:10Speaker 4: just think about how much sports media has been hollowed
- 34:13Speaker 4: out just in the last few years from like the
- 34:15Speaker 4: regional sports networks to ESPN has cut back a lot.
- 34:21Speaker 4: They really don't have it. I mean, how much do
- 34:24Speaker 4: you think they've reduced their workforce in the last five
- 34:26Speaker 4: to six years? I mean, that's a lot less programming
- 34:29Speaker 4: and people over there. Deadspin is not what it was.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Sports Illustrated, not what it was. ESPN the magazine don't
- 34:37Speaker 4: exist no more. So when you're looking for all this stuff,
- 34:40Speaker 4: the kind of deeply reported, well thought out work, that
- 34:45Speaker 4: we were enjoying 10, 12 years ago, I mean, either
- 34:49Speaker 4: people didn't support it or it just went bankrupt and
- 34:51Speaker 4: went away, didn't develop enough of an audience. So here
- 34:55Speaker 4: we are. Because where are you getting your news from now?
- 34:58Speaker 2: That's a good question.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I just feel like I get it. I couldn't give
- 35:02Speaker 1: you a great answer, but the thing is, this is
- 35:05Speaker 1: a story where people need it, man. First of all,
- 35:10Speaker 1: it is interesting to think that this would have been
- 35:12Speaker 1: a much bigger scandal as recently as 10 years ago,
- 35:15Speaker 1: certainly 30 years ago.
- 35:16Speaker 4: I mean, Chauncey Billups, man, he's an NBA Hall of Famer.
- 35:20Speaker 1: He's an NBA Hall of Famer and current head coach.
- 35:23Speaker 4: Possibly, allegedly, to have maybe tipped off people about, hey, man,
- 35:28Speaker 4: I'm going to send some people for this guy. I mean,
- 35:30Speaker 4: that is crazy. Isn't that more outrageous than what Pete
- 35:34Speaker 4: Rose did, was accused of doing?
- 35:36Speaker 1: Well, no, Pete Rose was, okay, so here's the difference.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Okay.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Pete Rose was making similar calls to receive information.
- 35:47Speaker 1: And then rather than give it to other people, was
- 35:50Speaker 1: using it on his own, which I think is fair
- 35:53Speaker 1: to say was actually more outrageous than, you know, like
- 35:58Speaker 1: he was actually placing the bets as opposed to like
- 36:01Speaker 1: perhaps looking out for somebody.
- 36:02Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 36:02Speaker 4: But it was like he was betting on himself. I mean,
- 36:04Speaker 4: the thing about Pete Rose never bet against himself.
- 36:06Speaker 2: There was that.
- 36:07Speaker 1: He was betting other things too. The key was that
- 36:09Speaker 1: he never bet against himself.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Never bet against himself. That's right.
- 36:13Speaker 4: So that's kind of, maybe that's what the way I
- 36:14Speaker 4: come from it. Um, as opposed to being like, well,
- 36:17Speaker 4: we might, I might be the reason that we lose tonight. Right.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Here's how you can make some money on it. Allegedly.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Um, but yeah, I mean, that is a huge, I mean,
- 36:27Speaker 4: Pete Rose held down sports media for so long. Like
- 36:32Speaker 4: we've pretended to really care about gambling and its implications
- 36:35Speaker 4: and what it could do for people's reputations and everything
- 36:37Speaker 4: else for 30 years of my life.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Oh, I think people cared. then.
- 36:42Speaker 2: I don't think that that was phony. Oh, I think
- 36:44Speaker 2: people cared then, too. I think they cared. And I'll
- 36:47Speaker 2: tell you this. I took a job in 2009.
- 36:49Speaker 1: This is when I took the job with the score,
- 36:51Speaker 1: doing the Morning Jones. And my boss at the time,
- 36:53Speaker 1: Mike Gentile, he'd been a radio producer, and he was like, look,
- 36:56Speaker 1: you have a slow day to this day. And he says,
- 37:00Speaker 1: to this day, you have a slow day? Ask if
- 37:02Speaker 1: Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 37:05Speaker 2: And hold on. Keep in mind that he was in Canada.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I mean, man.
- 37:09Speaker 1: It wasn't even the United States.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Like it was still a go. But I think that
- 37:16Speaker 1: there's a lot of depth to this that I don't.
- 37:20Speaker 1: It's wild to think that we're not even necessarily that
- 37:22Speaker 1: qualified to get into it, even though we got all
- 37:24Speaker 1: these people who engage in gambling. But the problem is, like,
- 37:27Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw where Charles Barkley was
- 37:28Speaker 1: talking about it, where he was like, these guys are
- 37:29Speaker 1: just stupid. And what Charles sounded like was a drunk
- 37:33Speaker 1: who has disdain for alcoholics because they bad for the brand.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Right. So I think that's the thing is that I
- 37:40Speaker 4: can't relate to. And I assume you can't. I don't
- 37:42Speaker 4: have that kind of advice. Right. So I don't it
- 37:44Speaker 4: doesn't hit me. And we're talking about this a little earlier.
- 37:48Speaker 4: So I got a call from a sports book the
- 37:51Speaker 4: other day, a sports book that I use for work
- 37:53Speaker 4: sometimes just to give some just like an informational thing,
- 37:57Speaker 4: not to gamble or whatever, put money on stuff. And
- 38:01Speaker 4: they called me and I'm thinking, oh, this is about
- 38:04Speaker 4: something related to my work. And they're like, we noticed
- 38:06Speaker 4: that you had opened your account and you haven't used
- 38:09Speaker 4: it yet. You haven't fully set it up yet. Do
- 38:11Speaker 4: you need any help with that? Or is there any
- 38:12Speaker 4: reason you hadn't done that? And I'm like, you all
- 38:15Speaker 4: are checking on me like that for real? Like, I mean,
- 38:18Speaker 4: that was crazy. They wanted, they were so insistent on
- 38:21Speaker 4: the idea that I should be gambling. I opened this account.
- 38:24Speaker 4: I should be putting some money on something. I should
- 38:25Speaker 4: be doing some games. I'm like, man, if they'll chase
- 38:27Speaker 4: you down and you're weak like that, if you have the,
- 38:30Speaker 4: not weak, I shouldn't say that.
- 38:31Speaker 1: But if you have- No, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 38:35Speaker 2: It's okay. I think, to say weak. Like, and I'm saying,
- 38:39Speaker 2: if you're weak, I'm saying, I.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Know, but I'm saying, but I mean, strong has to
- 38:45Speaker 1: have an opposite, right? And in this particular way, people
- 38:50Speaker 1: have weaknesses, right? Like, I don't think, maybe it's impossible
- 38:54Speaker 1: to separate weak from a larger connotation. But if this is,
- 38:58Speaker 1: calling it a vice and calling it a weakness are
- 39:00Speaker 1: not different things.
- 39:02Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 39:03Speaker 1: So if you're shaky in this regard... then you're going
- 39:06Speaker 1: to shake.
- 39:07Speaker 3: You're going to shake.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Okay. Well, I guess I, the way I'm trying to
- 39:10Speaker 4: think of it is that like, you know, everybody has their,
- 39:13Speaker 4: you know, that's me and sugar, you know what I mean?
- 39:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Um, yeah. So, um, but yeah, so, but yeah, okay.
- 39:20Speaker 4: We can, we can say that it's a weakness then, but,
- 39:23Speaker 4: I mean, just imagine that you're trying to stay away
- 39:26Speaker 4: from that stuff. You can't get away. They are so
- 39:30Speaker 4: pressed to find more customers and to expand it that
- 39:33Speaker 4: they will call you.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So what I thought was wild about that when you
- 39:37Speaker 1: said it was, I'm thinking strategically on their front, them
- 39:43Speaker 1: calling to get you to set it up, that feel
- 39:47Speaker 1: like a set up.
- 39:49Speaker 2: You understand what I'm saying?
- 39:51Speaker 5: Right?
- 39:51Speaker 1: Like, this sounds like something I don't need to be doing.
- 39:54Speaker 1: If you'd have pressed about getting me into this. This
- 39:56Speaker 1: sounds like something I don't need to be doing. It
- 39:58Speaker 1: seems like them phone, like, do you need any help
- 40:00Speaker 1: setting up the account? Like, I can read.
- 40:03Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 40:05Speaker 1: Like, I know how to fill out a form. I
- 40:07Speaker 1: feel like you trying to get me. Like, this is
- 40:09Speaker 1: how I know. They tell me, hey, why don't you
- 40:11Speaker 1: just come down the alley in Goodfellas?
- 40:14Speaker 3: Just go down there.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Just go down there and they'll take care of you.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Just go down there. I'm like, no, no, no.
- 40:19Speaker 1: You're a little too pressed about getting me to go
- 40:21Speaker 1: down that alley.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I ain't going to do that.
- 40:22Speaker 1: But if I had already started now is the time
- 40:25Speaker 1: for you to call me. Now that I done hit
- 40:27Speaker 1: this rock, now there's a chance that you might be
- 40:30Speaker 1: able to get me going on something.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's right.
- 40:35Speaker 4: I don't know what they thought was going to happen here,
- 40:37Speaker 4: but yeah, I mean, because clearly I wasn't inclined to
- 40:41Speaker 4: get involved in this, but maybe they thought that I
- 40:43Speaker 4: was involved with another sports book or had another. Maybe
- 40:45Speaker 4: they were concerned that I was giving my money away
- 40:48Speaker 4: to somebody else. But this is kind of my theory
- 40:51Speaker 4: about life, and gambling is very different. Man, if you
- 40:53Speaker 4: got to tell me how good it is and you
- 40:55Speaker 4: got to pitch it to me like that, I'm just
- 40:57Speaker 4: going to be a little bit concerned about why doesn't
- 40:59Speaker 4: this sell itself?
- 41:00Speaker 3: I don't understand.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean, they just need you to give
- 41:04Speaker 1: it a try because of everything that you got to
- 41:07Speaker 1: get past. You know what I mean? It's, they like,
- 41:13Speaker 1: should I make this comparison? All I'm saying is sometimes
- 41:19Speaker 1: the approach is to try to get people to understand
- 41:22Speaker 1: that societal norms.
- 41:24Speaker 2: are not necessarily the be-all, end-all. You know what I'm saying?
- 41:27Speaker 2: And sometimes you got to do what you.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Want to do.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Like, you know?
- 41:32Speaker 2: Like, come on.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Ain't nobody going to look at you no different tomorrow.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Right?
- 41:37Speaker 1: Like, come on. No, no, no, no.
- 41:39Speaker 4: And ain't nobody even paying attention to you like that.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I ain't going to say nothing to my friends.
- 41:43Speaker 4: You know?
- 41:44Speaker 1: Like....
- 41:47Speaker 4: We don't yeah i mean that is very true they're
- 41:49Speaker 4: like hey man and i ain't nobody gonna say that
- 41:51Speaker 4: nobody paying attention to you right now the thought that
- 41:53Speaker 4: like you just you're sort of anonymous to the world
- 41:55Speaker 4: right yes yeah yeah yeah no that's right that's right
- 41:58Speaker 4: i mean but i just i don't know man i
- 42:01Speaker 4: mean i i have real empathy for people that are
- 42:04Speaker 4: and it worries me i have a son man and
- 42:06Speaker 4: i guess i have a you know i have a
- 42:07Speaker 4: daughter too but i mean of the two that's more
- 42:09Speaker 4: likely to develop an addiction to gambling obviously it's the
- 42:12Speaker 4: boy and i'm like how do you avoid that when
- 42:14Speaker 4: you hear so many stories about kids having sports books
- 42:18Speaker 4: open on their phone at school or they're just hanging out.
- 42:20Speaker 4: I'm just like, the idea of casually gambling in college,
- 42:24Speaker 4: like that just seemed like.
- 42:24Speaker 3: A grown man thing to do.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Yo, or at the very least a white man thing
- 42:29Speaker 1: to do. I was amazed to find out how many
- 42:32Speaker 1: people gambled on sports. Like, I don't feel like that
- 42:34Speaker 1: was a thing. When I got my college, I didn't
- 42:36Speaker 1: feel like cocaine was really a thing. And I didn't
- 42:38Speaker 1: feel like sports. I didn't know these two things was
- 42:40Speaker 1: out here. Then I started kicking.
- 42:41Speaker 2: It with white boys. And it was a whole nother world.
- 42:44Speaker 4: I definitely thought gambling was a white boy thing.
- 42:47Speaker 1: But that's not the case anymore. And you notice, man,
- 42:49Speaker 1: they pushing hard on black people platforms. Like Joe Button
- 42:52Speaker 1: doing prize picks commercials, for example.
- 42:54Speaker 3: I know, man.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I mean, I guess they did with me, too. I mean,
- 42:58Speaker 1: I guess this counts in the same way.
- 43:00Speaker 4: I mean, they're getting this, man. I mean, it reminds me.
- 43:03Speaker 3: It was funny.
- 43:04Speaker 4: I don't know why I looked up Joe Cool or
- 43:06Speaker 4: Joe Camel the other day.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Oh, I got it by Joe Camel.
- 43:09Speaker 4: I was thinking about, I was like, what made people
- 43:12Speaker 4: come up with Joe Camel? And Joe Camel was an
- 43:14Speaker 4: invention of 1988.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Like, I thought it was.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Really?
- 43:18Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm thinking this was, it went back to the
- 43:22Speaker 4: 50s and 60s or whatever. And, you know, for people
- 43:25Speaker 4: that don't know Joe Camel, I mean, it was like
- 43:27Speaker 4: just a very cartoon Camel.
- 43:31Speaker 2: For Camel Cigarettes.
- 43:32Speaker 4: For Camel Cigarettes. And they would dress him up. He
- 43:35Speaker 4: had a whole bunch of different outfits. Sometimes he'd be
- 43:37Speaker 4: looking like Billy Dee Williams at a piano. Sometimes he
- 43:40Speaker 4: looked like James Dean or a motorcycle. It was stuff
- 43:43Speaker 4: like that. And so they were trying to sell the
- 43:45Speaker 4: image of it as cool to a younger generation and
- 43:48Speaker 4: a more urban clientele. And I'm just like, oh, is
- 43:52Speaker 4: this what gambling is now? Has it just kind of
- 43:54Speaker 4: become a thing where it's like, all right, well, you
- 43:56Speaker 4: see Jamie Foxx and all these other people talking, Joe
- 43:59Speaker 4: Budden talking about, I'm putting some money on jalen brunson
- 44:03Speaker 4: or whatever and it's like i guess like the stigma
- 44:04Speaker 4: of that or the idea that this is a world
- 44:06Speaker 4: that will welcome you in and you can get in
- 44:09Speaker 4: and gamble like the.
- 44:10Speaker 1: White boys you know and also let me tell you
- 44:12Speaker 1: this about camel cigarettes there's a good chance if you
- 44:14Speaker 1: meet a woman and she got a box of camel
- 44:16Speaker 1: cigarettes on the bar that's also a jack and coke
- 44:19Speaker 1: in that glass.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Have you you've known a woman that smoked camel.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Cigarettes yes i have.
- 44:27Speaker 1: She was a Jack and Coke drinker, too. I'm just
- 44:31Speaker 1: telling you. There's certain things that go together.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Man.
- 44:37Speaker 2: No, but that is.
- 44:39Speaker 2: The gambling people.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I had lost track of how many of these places
- 44:42Speaker 1: they give you free money to start playing. Because they
- 44:45Speaker 1: know that once you get you in, you'll do a
- 44:48Speaker 1: little bit more.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Have you tried? Have you done any of this at all?
- 44:51Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 44:52Speaker 2: I don't... I think it is.
- 44:55Speaker 1: There's something about, to me, that doing this job makes
- 44:58Speaker 1: me feel like that's something I should not do.
- 45:00Speaker 3: Okay.
- 45:01Speaker 1: On top of that, I understand the type of ego
- 45:05Speaker 1: that I have, and this feels like something I should
- 45:07Speaker 1: be able to outsmart, which is what everybody thinks about this.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And then, by the way, once you start winning, they
- 45:14Speaker 1: stop letting you play.
- 45:16Speaker 4: But wait, so, I mean, you know, Nick is, I mean,
- 45:19Speaker 4: like you said, is well-versed in this, and he does
- 45:22Speaker 4: high-stakes poker games, all that good stuff. So that didn't
- 45:25Speaker 4: influence you at all, thinking like, you know, because there's
- 45:27Speaker 4: a part of me that thinks.
- 45:28Speaker 2: No, no, no, please understand this.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Those gamblers know a lot about the game, too. And
- 45:32Speaker 4: I'm just like, I wonder if it would help me
- 45:34Speaker 4: to know a lot about the game.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Now, that is a fair point.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I talk to guys who play in the business and
- 45:38Speaker 1: that is their rationale for doing this. But please understand,
- 45:41Speaker 1: hanging out with Nick on a Sunday afternoon watching football
- 45:44Speaker 1: is not a commercial for gambling.
- 45:46Speaker 2: It is much more a commercial for the 800 number.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Then it is something that makes you think that this
- 45:51Speaker 1: is something that you should engage in. No, no, no, no, no.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Nothing about watching Nick on Sunday makes gambling look attractive.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Fair point. It's very similar to the example I make.
- 46:01Speaker 1: It feels a lot like watching Uncut Gems.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Well, you know, Van gives the example. I'm sure he
- 46:08Speaker 4: told it on here, too, about, like, he asked one
- 46:11Speaker 4: of his uncles or somebody, why you do crack?
- 46:13Speaker 3: And he's like, I'm looking at y'all, like, why y'all didn't?
- 46:15Speaker 4: You know, why y'all ain't do it? Yeah.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 4: So my thing is about gambling and sport. I don't
- 46:24Speaker 4: need to care about sports like that. I feel like
- 46:26Speaker 4: competition is, I don't need fantasy football. The competition alone,
- 46:31Speaker 4: the pageantry, the opportunity to sit down and enjoy. I
- 46:34Speaker 4: don't need that. And I don't want to be emotionally
- 46:36Speaker 4: invested in a game like that.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Well, what it makes you, what it helps with is
- 46:40Speaker 1: caring about the games that you don't care about.
- 46:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Right. And like, to me, I feel like if I
- 46:47Speaker 1: need to make myself care about this, therefore I put
- 46:50Speaker 1: some money on it. Have you thought about curling up
- 46:53Speaker 1: with a good book? Or perhaps some other activity. Just
- 47:01Speaker 1: throwing it out there.
- 47:02Speaker 4: I mean, what was it the other week I told
- 47:04Speaker 4: you I was watching Sam Houston State versus Utah?
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you definitely had money on the guy.
- 47:08Speaker 4: You thought you can think there was any possible way.
- 47:10Speaker 4: I said, no, man, I just want to watch football.
- 47:12Speaker 4: And I don't need no money to put put, you know,
- 47:15Speaker 4: do a prop bit to make myself enjoy it. And
- 47:17Speaker 4: I mean, again, I, I'm grateful for that. I understand
- 47:20Speaker 4: if you don't feel that way, then, you know, Hey man,
- 47:23Speaker 4: go with God. But I, I mean, they are praying
- 47:26Speaker 4: upon our week on, on people's vices and introducing them
- 47:29Speaker 4: to things and making them think that they could be
- 47:31Speaker 4: smarter than they are. And I also kind of think
- 47:32Speaker 4: that just because of like the way the economy is
- 47:35Speaker 4: and the job market, I wonder how many people, and
- 47:38Speaker 4: I'm not, I wonder how many people think that they
- 47:40Speaker 4: can make money actually.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Yo, that's the thing about it is that if you're
- 47:44Speaker 1: doing it for fun, that's one thing. But if your
- 47:46Speaker 1: plan is I'm about to hit for this lick, that's not.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Really how this works, brother.
- 47:55Speaker 3: I mean, there's a reason they're sponsoring everything now. You
- 47:58Speaker 3: know what I mean? Like all them people.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Hey, man, they just like, look, it really is like rock.
- 48:01Speaker 1: They just like, look, man, we can get you to
- 48:03Speaker 1: hit that rock one time, baby. All we need you
- 48:05Speaker 1: to do is hit that rock one time, right? And
- 48:08Speaker 1: then after that, the rock going to take care of it.
- 48:12Speaker 1: You understand what I'm saying? After you hit that rock
- 48:14Speaker 1: one time, the rock sell itself. I think I told
- 48:20Speaker 1: you once, one of my guys told me he took
- 48:23Speaker 1: jazz piano lessons and he said that he took piano
- 48:26Speaker 1: lessons from a jazz piano player. He said that he
- 48:32Speaker 1: told the story of that day where all the jazz
- 48:34Speaker 1: men did heroin. He's like, I'm a jazz man now.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I'm going to do heroin. He said he shot that
- 48:39Speaker 1: heroin up one time and he said that As it
- 48:42Speaker 1: was going, he looked at whoever it was and was like, hey, man,
- 48:46Speaker 1: don't you ever let me do this ever again. He
- 48:49Speaker 1: was like, I will be strung out on this shit
- 48:53Speaker 1: so fast. He said he could not imagine feeling better
- 48:56Speaker 1: than he did off that. I mean, it got to
- 48:58Speaker 1: be right. How good something got to feel for you
- 49:01Speaker 1: to shoot it?
- 49:02Speaker 4: I would be very afraid. I mean, I don't think
- 49:06Speaker 4: I don't think I could. It could get me like that,
- 49:08Speaker 4: but yeah, I mean, it is kind of scary how
- 49:10Speaker 4: bad people want it, man.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Oh, clearly it could get you. Like, everybody else is
- 49:13Speaker 1: telling you that very, very, very clearly it could get you.
- 49:17Speaker 4: I mean, how much better do you need your high
- 49:20Speaker 4: to be, man? I.
- 49:24Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 49:25Speaker 1: I just... See, that's the thing. It's not about need.
- 49:28Speaker 1: That's the mistake everybody makes is thinking it's about need.
- 49:31Speaker 1: It's not about need. It's just about want, right? Like, that's...
- 49:37Speaker 1: It's just about want. And yeah, it couldn't be me.
- 49:42Speaker 3: I guess so.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I mean, and when I say it couldn't be me,
- 49:44Speaker 1: not couldn't be me to get strung out. I just
- 49:46Speaker 1: got to keep myself out of that discussion. Right. And
- 49:49Speaker 1: I think that's part of it with the gambling, man.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Got to keep it. I think this is the biggest thing.
- 49:56Speaker 1: And I think I've talked about this before, but the
- 49:58Speaker 1: point that was made that the smartphone stopped online from
- 50:00Speaker 1: being a place you went to being a place that
- 50:02Speaker 1: goes with you everywhere.
- 50:03Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 50:04Speaker 1: When I go to Vegas, I play blackjack and I
- 50:07Speaker 1: might lose a couple thousand dollars in the course of
- 50:09Speaker 1: the weekend because I made that decision before I show
- 50:11Speaker 1: up that I'm going to play X amount of dollars
- 50:13Speaker 1: in blackjack. Maybe it'll go up a little more, but
- 50:16Speaker 1: I'm here. I'm going to have a good time.
- 50:17Speaker 2: I am going to play it. And then when I.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Leave the casino, I have left. With these sports books,
- 50:22Speaker 1: you never leave.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 50:24Speaker 3: It's always there with you.
- 50:25Speaker 1: It's always wherever it is that you go. And that
- 50:29Speaker 1: to me, I think, is where this is different than
- 50:32Speaker 1: it had ever been before.
- 50:33Speaker 4: And you can check, I mean, it's actually, I mean,
- 50:36Speaker 4: if you just kind of back up for a little bit, Beau,
- 50:38Speaker 4: I mean, in addition to the proliferation of, you know, smartphones, just,
- 50:44Speaker 4: I mean, we really just got acclimated all of a
- 50:47Speaker 4: sudden to them holding major sporting events in Vegas. Yes.
- 50:50Speaker 4: You know, just like everything, like I just, it kind
- 50:52Speaker 4: of has been a remarkable shift over the course of
- 50:55Speaker 4: our lifetime because they were so deathly scared, so deathly
- 50:57Speaker 4: afraid of like, you know, the black socks or the
- 51:01Speaker 4: old NYU scandals. Like those things were actually, if you
- 51:04Speaker 4: were a sports fan and you kind of, those stories
- 51:06Speaker 4: were real, they were scary stories, man, about like how
- 51:10Speaker 4: they could totally destroy your reputation. And I just kind
- 51:14Speaker 4: of felt like, you know, I mean, I don't, I
- 51:17Speaker 4: don't know what's responsible for our changing wars around that stuff, but,
- 51:22Speaker 4: but I guess we, we just need a ways to sell,
- 51:24Speaker 4: to sell things to more people.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Maybe that's just what it is. And we're running out
- 51:27Speaker 3: of things to sell.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 51:29Speaker 1: That's the issue is we're running out of new ways
- 51:32Speaker 1: to get this money. Last thing before we get out
- 51:35Speaker 1: of here. Deion Sanders is going to be the coach
- 51:37Speaker 1: of Colorado in 2026. Why?
- 51:41Speaker 3: Why would he be? I mean, what is he?
- 51:44Speaker 4: Look, man. So the one thing we know about Deion
- 51:46Speaker 4: is that he coached his sons basically every step of
- 51:48Speaker 4: the way. Youth ball, high school ball, college at two
- 51:53Speaker 4: different schools.
- 51:54Speaker 3: So that is.
- 51:55Speaker 4: I mean, that is an accomplishment. That's great. I would
- 51:59Speaker 4: love if I had that as part of my story, right?
- 52:02Speaker 4: That I got to coach my kids all the way
- 52:04Speaker 4: through and enjoy a lot of success and a lot
- 52:07Speaker 4: of attention. They're gone now. He's not doing well, like health-wise.
- 52:12Speaker 4: He already told you he don't want to recruit. He
- 52:14Speaker 4: didn't want to recruit. He told, I don't need to
- 52:17Speaker 4: leave Colorado to do this. So that to me, that
- 52:21Speaker 4: shows that like you actually don't kind of enjoy it.
- 52:23Speaker 4: a lot of parts of this thing. So what, what
- 52:26Speaker 4: are they building towards? Like, what are you, what are
- 52:29Speaker 4: you like, what is he coming back to next year?
- 52:30Speaker 4: What are these other kids coming back to next year?
- 52:32Speaker 2: And by the way, on the, um, short list of
- 52:35Speaker 2: C ain't no racism.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Brian Kelly out here getting killed for not being out
- 52:39Speaker 1: here doing the recruiting.
- 52:41Speaker 2: And Deion Sanders is like, for who?
- 52:43Speaker 1: For what? Brian Kelly, I guarantee you, Brian Kelly highlighting
- 52:47Speaker 1: that article and sending it to everybody.
- 52:49Speaker 4: Like, what about Deion, huh?
- 52:51Speaker 1: What about him?
- 52:52Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Brian, people like Deion.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Bro, and that has to drive him even crazier.
- 52:56Speaker 4: I know, right.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Because Brian Kelly's thing is he doesn't understand what the
- 53:00Speaker 1: problem is. And look, I don't know the man. I
- 53:04Speaker 1: don't know what the problem is either. But he doesn't
- 53:05Speaker 1: understand what the problem is.
- 53:07Speaker 4: I mean, do you think, I mean, he got to
- 53:09Speaker 4: know by now, right?
- 53:10Speaker 1: Clearly he does not.
- 53:11Speaker 4: Because the way, I mean, people just, I mean, celebrating,
- 53:15Speaker 4: you know? Like, I mean, it just, he wasn't a
- 53:18Speaker 4: bad coach. It didn't go five and seven. Like, the
- 53:21Speaker 4: program did not, like, hemorrhage or anything.
- 53:23Speaker 1: It just.
- 53:25Speaker 4: I'm just shocked that people hate him in that way.
- 53:27Speaker 4: I mean, again, so if you– I mean, I take
- 53:30Speaker 4: seriously the idea that a kid that worked on his
- 53:33Speaker 4: football staff died under his leadership, right? Like when he
- 53:38Speaker 4: was at Notre Dame, a kid– they had practice on
- 53:40Speaker 4: a very windy day, and the kid, I think his
- 53:42Speaker 4: name was Declan Sullivan, fell off the riser.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Declan, yeah.
- 53:46Speaker 3: That's right, Declan, right, yeah.
- 53:47Speaker 4: So anyway, so yeah, so I get that, but I just–
- 53:53Speaker 4: I don't think that would stop a lot of other
- 53:55Speaker 4: people from hating other coaches.
- 53:57Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 53:58Speaker 4: Like, I don't think a lot of other coaches would
- 54:00Speaker 4: get this, would be branded like this if they had
- 54:02Speaker 4: that in their background, sadly enough.
- 54:04Speaker 3: But for Deion, man.
- 54:07Speaker 4: Like, also, bro, man, Carucci don't want to, I mean,
- 54:10Speaker 4: you know, she probably, I probably want to come back
- 54:12Speaker 4: to Dallas. So this is what I, so I want
- 54:15Speaker 4: to give some clarity on this because I talked about
- 54:18Speaker 4: Deion coaching at TCU.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I wanted him there before they hired Sonny. Sonny Dykes.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Who got you to a national championship game and you
- 54:26Speaker 1: gave him no credit for it.
- 54:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:28Speaker 3: I mean, look, was I wrong? I mean, was I wrong?
- 54:32Speaker 1: Who got you to a national championship game and you
- 54:34Speaker 1: gave him no credit for it.
- 54:35Speaker 4: Again, I think he's a nice guy, whatever, but it
- 54:38Speaker 4: is what it is.
- 54:39Speaker 1: All he did was get you to a national championship game.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Why are you telling everybody else that they should be
- 54:43Speaker 1: satisfied with what their situations are?
- 54:47Speaker 4: I didn't say, you know, at this point, certainly this year,
- 54:49Speaker 4: I think we should just keep it. Let's ride it
- 54:52Speaker 4: out and see what happens. But, I mean, the thing
- 54:57Speaker 4: about Dion, I think if Dion had gotten a TCU job,
- 55:00Speaker 4: I feel like this would all look a lot different.
- 55:02Speaker 4: He doesn't have no connections to Colorado. It's hard to
- 55:04Speaker 4: get people to go over there. Like, they don't have
- 55:06Speaker 4: no home. TCU, man, he lives in an area... maybe
- 55:09Speaker 4: one of the best recruiting areas. He'd be close to home.
- 55:12Speaker 4: I think he would be energized by being there. Like,
- 55:15Speaker 4: you know, if he'd been hired those many years ago
- 55:18Speaker 4: and he was going through these health issues, I don't
- 55:20Speaker 4: think people would be like, oh, man, this is his
- 55:23Speaker 4: last year.
- 55:23Speaker 3: But because we.
- 55:24Speaker 4: All know that he ain't got no connection to Colorado,
- 55:26Speaker 4: there's no reason for him to be there anymore.
- 55:28Speaker 3: That's why I think people say him.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Does TCU have enough money to be competitive in the
- 55:32Speaker 1: way that you're talking about, though?
- 55:33Speaker 2: Because that seems to be the biggest problem.
- 55:35Speaker 1: No, but I say the biggest problem at Colorado seems
- 55:37Speaker 1: to be that they don't have the money. And so
- 55:38Speaker 1: the idea that it would be much different at TCU,
- 55:41Speaker 1: I think, entirely depends on whether they have the money.
- 55:43Speaker 4: I think they've got decent money. I don't know if
- 55:46Speaker 4: they've got, you know, Indiana, LSU money. But I don't
- 55:49Speaker 4: think he needs that. And I definitely don't think.
- 55:53Speaker 2: He needs that at DW.
- 55:54Speaker 1: I think the money has also diminished the comparative advantage
- 55:58Speaker 1: of having Deion Sanders.
- 56:00Speaker 4: Okay.
- 56:01Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like, you got to pay him.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Like, it was one thing. He would never have gotten
- 56:05Speaker 1: Travis Hunter to go to Jackson State if the money
- 56:08Speaker 1: was what it is now.
- 56:09Speaker 2: And look, that's only four years ago or three. Like,
- 56:11Speaker 2: it's changed that fast.
- 56:13Speaker 4: That's right.
- 56:13Speaker 1: So that's where I'm wondering where, like I say, having
- 56:16Speaker 1: the facilities don't matter as much as it used to.
- 56:18Speaker 1: What about the charming assistant or charming recruiter?
- 56:21Speaker 2: How much does that matter? Especially since you don't want
- 56:23Speaker 2: to do the recruiting.
- 56:24Speaker 3: That's right.
- 56:25Speaker 4: But see, I don't think the thing is, if you're
- 56:26Speaker 4: a DFW, you ain't got to do that much.
- 56:27Speaker 1: You don't have to do that, but you don't have
- 56:29Speaker 1: to go this far. I think he don't want to
- 56:31Speaker 1: get on planes.
- 56:31Speaker 4: I bet he don't want to go.
- 56:32Speaker 1: But he was already saying he can't go to no
- 56:33Speaker 1: high school, which I thought was a preposterous thing for
- 56:35Speaker 1: him to say.
- 56:36Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, man. Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 4: He's the one guy I think that could overcome a
- 56:41Speaker 4: lot of that in Texas. Because you also know in Texas,
- 56:43Speaker 4: for people who don't, the Texas high school coaches association
- 56:46Speaker 4: is a big fucking deal. You got to lay prostrate,
- 56:50Speaker 4: lay prostrate in front of them people. So they will,
- 56:52Speaker 4: you know, they can do whatever they want. You know
- 56:54Speaker 4: what I mean? They, they, they control a lot of
- 56:57Speaker 4: people there. They have a lot of influence in that state.
- 56:59Speaker 4: And Dion is like, I think he's the one guy
- 57:03Speaker 4: that wouldn't need them.
- 57:04Speaker 3: Cause he's like, man, there's a lot of brothers, man.
- 57:05Speaker 4: He could get, you know, old coach samples at Duncanville.
- 57:09Speaker 4: He's got a line on a lot of other guys
- 57:11Speaker 4: that I don't think, I think, because Deion is the
- 57:14Speaker 4: way he is, that he doesn't need all the same
- 57:16Speaker 4: stuff that other coaches need, right? I don't think it
- 57:18Speaker 4: would mean that TCU would be a national championship contender,
- 57:22Speaker 4: but I think it means that it would be 9-3
- 57:24Speaker 4: every now and again, and people would be happy with
- 57:26Speaker 4: the program under him.
- 57:28Speaker 1: See, 9-3 at TCU requires you to be a better
- 57:31Speaker 1: coach than I think that he has demonstrated himself to be.
- 57:34Speaker 1: I mean, has he done anything to make you think
- 57:36Speaker 1: he can coach?
- 57:38Speaker 4: I mean, they got.
- 57:39Speaker 3: Better last year, right? Like, that defense got better.
- 57:42Speaker 1: Okay, but they got better.
- 57:44Speaker 4: Shador's not a great, I mean, as we see, he's
- 57:46Speaker 4: not a great talent.
- 57:48Speaker 1: I hear you, but, like, I mean, they just got
- 57:51Speaker 1: their doors blown off by Utah. Like, managing clock stuff
- 57:54Speaker 1: like that, Deion has not demonstrated himself to be great at.
- 57:56Speaker 1: I don't think that his teams have a clear personality
- 57:59Speaker 1: or a clear identity that speaks to a head coach.
- 58:03Speaker 4: That's right. I mean, I'd be willing to take the change.
- 58:08Speaker 4: If TCU, so if anybody at TCU is listening to me,
- 58:11Speaker 4: if you want to try to go higher.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Oh, I get it on the chance. I'm just not
- 58:14Speaker 1: sure that it would go any different than it did.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Man, yeah.
- 58:17Speaker 4: I mean, I think right now it's going okay, and
- 58:19Speaker 4: he's rebuilding after he lost a quarterback that a lot
- 58:22Speaker 4: of people thought should have been an early round draft
- 58:25Speaker 4: pick and a Heisman Trophy winner and some other guys,
- 58:28Speaker 4: and he's having to replace them, and that's what's going
- 58:30Speaker 4: to happen to Colorado. And Colorado's just a difficult job.
- 58:33Speaker 1: I mean, he's got a five-star quarterback, right?
- 58:35Speaker 3: Yeah, he got a five-star quarterback.
- 58:37Speaker 4: He got a five-star left tackle not so long ago.
- 58:41Speaker 4: So he's still able to get kids every now and again,
- 58:44Speaker 4: but it's just a tougher sell at Colorado, even as
- 58:48Speaker 4: beautiful as Colorado is, the tradition it has. I think
- 58:52Speaker 4: more for Deion, I'm like, why do you want to
- 58:54Speaker 4: do this more than Colorado?
- 58:56Speaker 3: Oh, no, no.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Colorado will keep him as long as he is willing
- 59:01Speaker 1: to stay. I, like you, I think the health stuff.
- 59:05Speaker 1: But I'm not in his body, so I want to
- 59:07Speaker 1: be careful, you know, making too many assumptions about what
- 59:12Speaker 1: he'll do because of his health. But I don't think
- 59:14Speaker 1: I would continue to do that job.
- 59:16Speaker 3: It seems really difficult.
- 59:17Speaker 4: I mean, you know, maybe he could do a thing
- 59:19Speaker 4: where he takes some time off and gets healthy or
- 59:22Speaker 4: whatever and he'll feel differently. I think college football is
- 59:26Speaker 4: better with Deion.
- 59:29Speaker 1: But it's only better with Deion if he'd do anything
- 59:31Speaker 1: to make us pay attention. They have been a wholly
- 59:34Speaker 1: irrelevant factor.
- 59:35Speaker 4: But I would still watch them when they're not good sometimes.
- 59:38Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I still think that Colorado Georgia
- 59:40Speaker 4: Tech season opener did pretty decent, even though nobody was like.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and I have no idea what the numbers are now. Like,
- 59:46Speaker 1: I don't know how many people are still paying attention.
- 59:47Speaker 3: It clearly ain't what it is.
- 59:48Speaker 4: I know one thing.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Raekwon... And whoever else, they ain't showing up on the sidelines.
- 59:53Speaker 1: That's a great question.
- 59:54Speaker 2: That was actually what I was curious about.
- 59:56Speaker 4: Yeah, now that kind of stuff is over. But, you know,
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: they still have a little bit of cash in. There's
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: still some people rooting for them. So, you know, I mean, yeah, Colorado, man,
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: I'm sure they will hold on to them forever because
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: that ain't no easy job no more neither.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: I mean, look, Bill McCartney, underrated, great all-time coach.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: I mean, Gary Barnett.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Yeah, also, Big 8 recruiting standards.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: That's a very– I mean, also, I mean, it's a
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: lot easier when you have to play against Oklahoma State.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Yes, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Those Kansas State's Kansas.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: And Big A, man, you had two games.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: To play every year.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: Yeah, man.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Yeah, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Nebraska and Oklahoma. That's all you had to do. But
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: that is Joel Anderson.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Check him out on the Ranger Tailgate, also on the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: Press Box, and wherever you are, if you listen very carefully,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: you can hear Joel hating on me somehow, some way.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: He's doing it.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: I just want people to really take note of how
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: this conversation has evolved from where it started to where
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: it ended and who was doing the hating, you know,
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: that's what, that's what I would think about.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I was going to say something. You know what?
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: I actually, I was going to clown you for a
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: second because I thought you had like some mutton chops
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: on the side of your face. And for a second,
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: I thought I was like, that kind of looked like
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: a Benny the butcher type look you had going on.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: But I, but then I was like, okay, you're.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I wanted to hate so bad that I thought I
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: saw something that wasn't even there.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: That's what I just heard you say.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: No, I mean, I just, I was like, oh, that
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: kind of, anyway. It's just for a second. You don't
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: look like Benny the Butcher.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: You don't let me go, or.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here
