- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jason Candle on the UConn Football Coaches
- 0:03Speaker 1: Show a little bit later on. We'll talk to Josh
- 0:05Speaker 1: Mickens and also Xavier Watson, the tight end, about UConn's
- 0:10Speaker 1: win over UMass and also the game coming up with
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Air Force. A couple other notes, Coach, on the
- 0:15Speaker 1: win over UMass. The linebacking crew was all over the place.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I mean, Hayden Pegg, seven tackles, Akavion Sherman, six, John Lista, six.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It seemed like every time I would call a play
- 0:27Speaker 1: that was a positive defensive play. Those guys were involved.
- 0:31Speaker 1: How active were they on Friday night?
- 0:34Speaker 2: I mean, those guys are high energy, high level players that,
- 0:37Speaker 2: you know, when they're flying around like that, that brings
- 0:39Speaker 2: energy to the entire defense. And then, and really if
- 0:42Speaker 2: we're being truthful to the entire football team, they all three,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, play a high role in special teams and they,
- 0:48Speaker 2: you know, they, they have the ability to impact the
- 0:50Speaker 2: game in a major way. And, you know, they can
- 0:51Speaker 2: do that from because they're very smart players, they're veteran
- 0:54Speaker 2: guys and, you know, they dissect plays pretty fast. So,
- 0:59Speaker 2: you know, they bring a physicality to them. They're what
- 1:03Speaker 2: a linebacker in court should look like. And Coach Jacobs
- 1:05Speaker 2: has done an unbelievable job with development of that and
- 1:08Speaker 2: really the communication that those guys have. It's been really
- 1:10Speaker 2: on par these last few weeks.
- 1:13Speaker 1: In a previous segment, you were talking about skill players
- 1:15Speaker 1: and I was standing with David Benedict on the field,
- 1:18Speaker 1: the athletic director, and we were looking at the team's
- 1:21Speaker 1: warm-up and he just said something like, boy, I like
- 1:23Speaker 1: the way our team looks. We look good. We've got
- 1:26Speaker 1: some athletes. And I want to bring that up because
- 1:29Speaker 1: the play that Caleb Osborne made to J.D. Willoughby, that
- 1:32Speaker 1: touchdown pass. Now, I saw you warming up with Caleb
- 1:35Speaker 1: a little bit, him throwing you the ball during some
- 1:37Speaker 1: of the warmups. So you know what that thing feels like.
- 1:40Speaker 1: That guy, Osborne, he's pretty accurate. You know, in that range,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I thought that was one of the great throws I've
- 1:46Speaker 1: seen all year.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I would go back a few weeks ago and
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, everybody was talking about him being able to
- 1:52Speaker 2: stretch the defense and run with his legs. And I
- 1:54Speaker 2: just reminded everybody to be careful putting this guy in
- 1:57Speaker 2: a box because he's going to shred you with his
- 1:58Speaker 2: arm if you give him the chance and put him
- 2:00Speaker 2: in one-on-one situations. So those are the throws I see
- 2:03Speaker 2: every day of practice. Those are the things that he
- 2:05Speaker 2: can do at a high level. We got to continue to,
- 2:08Speaker 2: you know, get him confident and making them consistently. But,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know, that's only going to come with time with
- 2:14Speaker 2: his routine and his at-bats during games. So, Very proud
- 2:19Speaker 2: of his effort Friday night. No catastrophic mistakes, turnovers, that
- 2:22Speaker 2: kind of thing, and did a good job putting them,
- 2:24Speaker 2: you know, when the guy's got one-on-one situations and he
- 2:26Speaker 2: could get him the ball, he got him the ball.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Caleb Osborne's only a sophomore. It's learning on the job,
- 2:31Speaker 1: isn't it? I mean, you've been doing this many, many years,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but 10 years at Toledo. When you see quarterbacks and
- 2:38Speaker 1: they're young guys and they're younger classmen, do you get
- 2:41Speaker 1: to a point where you say, oh, he's made that
- 2:43Speaker 1: leap now? Now he's kind of in the next level.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Is that something that happens when you're looking at quarterbacks?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's different levels to it. I think there's,
- 2:53Speaker 2: at some point in time, there's a transformation process that
- 2:56Speaker 2: goes from how do I play my position really well
- 3:00Speaker 2: to I play my position so well that everybody else
- 3:03Speaker 2: is just impacted, you know. and my presence is just
- 3:07Speaker 2: felt when I get out there on the field. So
- 3:09Speaker 2: that's pre-snap rhythm. That's post-snap operation. That's, you know, RPO reads,
- 3:15Speaker 2: that's run game checks. That's knowing where the, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: the movement keys are in the passing game. There's just
- 3:22Speaker 2: so many things that go into that where, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: that guy can play at an optimal level. And we've
- 3:27Speaker 2: got some great ones along my time and, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: conference players of the year and that kind of thing.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And got draft pick at quarterback. Like, These guys, they
- 3:37Speaker 2: all develop at their own pace, and you have to
- 3:40Speaker 2: be patient, and you have to understand as the head
- 3:42Speaker 2: coach and as the play caller that it's not really
- 3:44Speaker 2: what I know. It's what he knows and what he
- 3:46Speaker 2: can go execute, and sometimes that process of getting from
- 3:50Speaker 2: today until game day what he can do really, really well,
- 3:53Speaker 2: that's more of an art than it is a science.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And so when Caleb Osborne faces Air Force this weekend–
- 4:00Speaker 1: He's going to see a defense that may be a
- 4:02Speaker 1: little bit different than what he's seen. He's going to
- 4:04Speaker 1: have less time to work because they're going to have
- 4:06Speaker 1: the ball a lot. What do you talk to him
- 4:09Speaker 1: about this week in terms of his patience level and
- 4:11Speaker 1: his seeing the field and not trying to force anything?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think it always comes back to
- 4:17Speaker 2: the same thing, right? Like, can you have a really
- 4:20Speaker 2: good pre-snap process so you can perform at the level
- 4:25Speaker 2: you want to perform at once the ball's snapped? And
- 4:27Speaker 2: you know, everybody makes such a big deal about what
- 4:29Speaker 2: happens when the ball gets in his hands. It's not that.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It's not from get it in your hands to when
- 4:35Speaker 2: it leaves your hand. It is, you know, prior to,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, when you get the call and how you
- 4:39Speaker 2: process that and how you get everybody on the same
- 4:41Speaker 2: page and you orchestrate the whole thing. Because if you
- 4:44Speaker 2: can do that, you know, once the ball is in
- 4:47Speaker 2: your hands, you have the confidence just to go play
- 4:49Speaker 2: football like you've been playing since you were a little kid.
- 4:51Speaker 2: You know, if that process prior to that happening, slows
- 4:54Speaker 2: down and all of a sudden there's a little bit
- 4:55Speaker 2: of anxiety. You start to hold the ball a little
- 4:57Speaker 2: bit longer. Now the offensive line is not holding up
- 5:00Speaker 2: like you think they should. The receivers are coming out
- 5:02Speaker 2: of the breaks. You're not getting the ball in time.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And you just, that's where the choppy play comes. So,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you know, we've got to keep progressing him, continue to
- 5:10Speaker 2: pour into his process and what that looks like. And,
- 5:13Speaker 2: you know, when you say somebody's football IQ needs to
- 5:16Speaker 2: continue to improve, that's not an indictment of somebody's character.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That's just, this is a really hard job. This is
- 5:21Speaker 2: a really tough thing we're asking him to do. And
- 5:24Speaker 2: For him to go to where he wants to go,
- 5:25Speaker 2: we've just got to continue to pour into that.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think people tend to oversimplify with QBs, just
- 5:30Speaker 1: talk about stats, but there's so much going on when
- 5:33Speaker 1: the ball gets in a guy like Caleb Osborne's hands.
- 5:36Speaker 1: All right, Jason Candle with us. We have more of
- 5:38Speaker 1: the UConn Football Coaches Show in a moment on Learfield.
