- 0:00Exodus chapter 18, verse one, when Jethro the priest of Midian
- 0:07Moses father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses
- 0:12and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel
- 0:16out of Egypt. We're going to find out what old
- 0:19Jethro has to say to Moses. Verse 2 Then Jethro Moses's
- 0:24father-in-law took Zipporah Moses's wife, after he had sent
- 0:28her back three and her two sons, of which the name of the one was
- 0:33Gersham. For he said I have been an alien
- 0:36in a strange land, Four, And the name of the other was Eliasar.
- 0:40For the God of my father said he was my help, and delivered me
- 0:44from the sword of Pharaoh. 5 In Jethro, Moses's father-in-law
- 0:49came with the sons and his wife unto Moses in the wilderness,
- 0:53and he encamped at the mount of God.
- 0:56So here we can see that Jethro, who was a priest, he was
- 0:59bringing back Moses's wife and his two sons.
- 1:02And Jethro wanted to have a word with Moses because he saw all of
- 1:08the miraculous things that God was doing for the nation Israel
- 1:12as they were being LED around in the wilderness.
- 1:16And it should have been a very short journey into the Promised
- 1:19Land, but God had much work to do.
- 1:21And he was going to lead them out there for 40 years.
- 1:24But he brought them back to this place where God had revealed
- 1:28himself as the great I am. God had revealed himself in the
- 1:32burning Bush. And here Jethro wanted to come
- 1:36out. Jethro wanted to be able to
- 1:38speak to Moses. Jethro wanted to bring back
- 1:41Zipporah, and he wanted to bring back Gershom, and he wanted to
- 1:44bring back Eleazar. And you can see here that Moses
- 1:48and his father-in-law had much things to talk about. 6 And he
- 1:56said to Moses, Hi, your father-in-law, Jethro, have come
- 2:00unto you, and your wife, and your two sons with her seven.
- 2:03And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and he did
- 2:07obedience and kissed him. And they asked each other of
- 2:10their welfare. And they came into the tent.
- 2:13These two men, they're coming and they're joyful and they are
- 2:18paying each other homage. They're paying each other
- 2:20respect. They're saying to each other,
- 2:22welcome, friend, welcome. A in.
- 2:25Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to
- 2:29Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel's sake and all the
- 2:33travail that had come upon them, by the way, and how the Lord had
- 2:37delivered them. They're writing a book.
- 2:39There's so many things that have happened from the time that
- 2:43Moses decided in his heart to help out his fellow Israelites,
- 2:48when he slew the Egyptian and he covered them up in the sand,
- 2:52when he ran away and became a shepherd in the land.
- 2:56And whenever Jethro took him in as his own and he married his
- 3:01daughter. And you can see here that God
- 3:04called him back in to Egypt to set the people free.
- 3:08They've already walked across on dry land.
- 3:11They've already seen miracles, they've seen plagues.
- 3:14They've seen all of the things of God, the mighty hand of God.
- 3:18And now Moses is filling in Jethro of all of these events. 9
- 3:25in jeopardy, rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had
- 3:29done to Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the
- 3:33Egyptians. You need to understand that the
- 3:35Egyptians were a powerhouse. They were a superpower in the
- 3:40land. This was not an easy victory.
- 3:43This was not one at the hand of man.
- 3:46This was miraculous because God was for them, friends, and this
- 3:50was God's doing and God's upending and God's plagues that
- 3:54He sent to weaken the Egyptians to the point that they finally
- 3:59surrendered and capitulated and were able to give up all the
- 4:04Israelites and to let them go. And then after they let them go,
- 4:08they immediately regretted it, thought that the Israelites were
- 4:12wandering about, a miss, and then they sent after them and
- 4:16was covered over in the sea then.
- 4:21And Jephthor said, Blessed be the Lord who has delivered you
- 4:26out of the hand of the Egyptians, out of the hand of
- 4:30Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of
- 4:36the Egyptians. Jethro understood the powerhouse
- 4:41that Egypt was. Jethro understood that this was
- 4:44not the hand of man. This had to be God's hand. 11
- 4:51Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, for in
- 5:03the thing there, and they dealt proudly, He was above them.
- 5:07So he saw that the Egyptians were a proud people.
- 5:13They served many gods, they had no lack, and here we can see
- 5:19that God dealt with them appropriately. 12 And Jethro,
- 5:23Moses's father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices
- 5:28for God. And Aaron came, all the elders
- 5:32of Israel to eat bread with Moses's father-in-law before
- 5:36God. So they had a wonderful time of
- 5:41eating together, and to celebrate the Lord together they
- 5:45sacrificed unto the Lord for all the many blessings that God was
- 5:50pouring out upon that nation. 13 And it came to pass on the
- 5:55Morrow that Moses SAT to judge the people, and the people stood
- 6:00by Moses from morning to evening. 14 And when Moses,
- 6:05father-in-law, saw all that he did to the people, he said, What
- 6:09is this thing that you do to the people?
- 6:12Why do you sit yourself alone, and all the people stand by you
- 6:17from morning to evening? So Moses father-in-law was
- 6:22looking at the situation and sometimes we need a fresh set of
- 6:27eyes to set us straight. Sometimes we get so stuck in our
- 6:31ways and we can't see that there is a better way.
- 6:36And God will send people along the way to instruct us, friends,
- 6:40and we need to be able to stay fluid and able to actually take
- 6:45this constructive criticism. 15 And Moses said to his
- 6:52father-in-law, because the people come to me to inquire of
- 6:55God. So Moses was the great mediator
- 7:00and Moses had the words of God imprinted upon his heart and his
- 7:06mind. And that's desperately what we
- 7:08need, and that's desperately what the people here needed.
- 7:11And Jethro's going to point that out. 16 When they have a matter,
- 7:17they come to me, and I judge between 1:00 and the other, and
- 7:20I do make them know the statutes of God and his law. 17 And Moses
- 7:27his father-in-law, said unto him, The thing that you do is
- 7:30not good. 18 You will surely wear away both you and this
- 7:35people that is with you, And this thing is too heavy for you,
- 7:39for you are not able to perform it yourself alone.
- 7:43Can you imagine having an immediate need, and you have to
- 7:46wait in order to have it looked at and settled?
- 7:54This is what Jethro saw, he saw a people that were wore out from
- 8:00having to wait on the things that were happening.
- 8:04They had to wait to get them settled and Moses was wearing
- 8:08himself out from morning till evening. 19 Listen now unto my
- 8:15voice, I will give you counsel, and God shall be with you.
- 8:21Be you for the people to God word, that you may bring the
- 8:25causes to God. So Jethro says, listen to me,
- 8:30there's a better way to do this. 20 And you shall teach them
- 8:34ordinances and laws, and you shall show them the way which
- 8:37they must walk and work that they must do.
- 8:40So he's saying, Appoint to yourselves men who love God, who
- 8:46can memorize the things of God, and appoint them to listen. 21
- 8:52Moreover, you shall provide out of all the people able men, such
- 8:57as fear God, men of truth, hating, covetousness, place such
- 9:01over them to be rulers, thousands rulers, hundreds
- 9:05rulers of 50s, rulers of 10s. The New Testament talks about
- 9:11this, of deacons and apostles, of the ones who are to take the
- 9:16eldership, the ones who are to take the roles of an overseer,
- 9:20the ones who are to take the roles of an evangelist.
- 9:24And the New Testament tells us that they need to hate sin and
- 9:29hate even the things spotted by sin.
- 9:32And that is a true way to tell who loves God and who doesn't.
- 9:38Those that wink and turn the other way, who take a bribe,
- 9:42they are not those who should be in the offices of God's
- 9:48judgment. We need to set men who know the
- 9:51Bible, who learn the Bible, who hide the Bible, who are
- 9:55committed to peeling back the layers of the Bible over those
- 10:00who have no spiritual appetite, who are just wanting the candy
- 10:05in the land. They do not want to eat the bowl
- 10:07of vegetables that is set before them, that is healthy and gives
- 10:12life to their bones. 22 And let them judge the people at all
- 10:17seasons. And it shall be that every great
- 10:20matter that they shall bring to you, that every small matter
- 10:24they shall judge. So shall it be easier for
- 10:27yourself, and they shall bear the burden with you.
- 10:29So he's saying, let them agree upon the smaller matters.
- 10:33But if it is a High Court decision, then they can come
- 10:36unto Moses. 23 And if you shall do this thing, and God commands
- 10:44you so, then you shall be able to endure.
- 10:47And all the people shall also go to their place in peace.
- 10:50So the people won't be standing in the line, waiting in the
- 10:53queue, complaining and murmuring because it takes so long to get
- 10:58to Moses. They'll actually have peace and
- 11:01have their situations settled a lot faster if Moses will take
- 11:08his father in law's advice. 24 So Moses listened to the voice
- 11:13of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses
- 11:18chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over
- 11:21the people, rulers of thousands and rulers of hundreds, rulers
- 11:26of 50s and rulers of tens. 26 And they judged the people at
- 11:31all seasons, the hard causes they brought to Moses, But every
- 11:35small matter they judge themselves.
- 11:38We'll end on. 27 And Moses let his father-in-law depart and
- 11:43went his way into his own land. So you can see here that Moses
- 11:47was able to take the constructive criticism, and so
- 11:51should we. When God sends someone to speak
- 11:56to us, we need to have enough spiritual aptitude to be able to
- 12:03discern the voice of God, no matter who it comes through.
- 12:08And that is what Moses did. And it paid dividends, friends.
- 12:14He was able to actually settle things of great matters quickly.
- 12:19And the smaller things got settled much faster as well.
- 12:24And there was peace. What an amazing God we serve, a
- 12:27God of justice, and aren't you thankful that you are justified
- 12:36in the sight of God? I hope you've been blessed by
- 12:39this amazing chapter in God's Word.
- 12:42Let us pray. We thank you God for another
- 12:46opportunity to come and to worship you in spirit and truth.
- 12:49We thank you God, that you've given us your eternal words.
- 12:52We thank you God, that you have allowed us to hide them in our
- 12:56hearts. We thank you, Father, for all of
- 12:58the many blessings that you have given us.
- 13:01We love you Father, and we ask that you'll help us to finish
- 13:05this race well. In Jesus name I pray.
- 13:08Amen.
