- 0:16Welcome to PCR Sports, Good evening and welcome to the PCR
- 0:20Sports Show with myself, Dipam and Nigel this week and a very
- 0:25warm good evening to you and thank you for joining us as we
- 0:27start your sporting weekend on PCR FM and the PCR Sport Show
- 0:32here every Friday 6 till 7 and got a cracking show lined up
- 0:36this evening. Cricket is our subject and we've
- 0:39got the club captain from the Peterborough Town Cricket Club,
- 0:42David Clark with us and he's joined by Tim Overs who's on the
- 0:46committee there and also doing some great fundraising and plays
- 0:50for one of the sides as well. So we've got a great show lined
- 0:52up, they're going to talk to us about the impending pre season
- 0:55and the season ahead and how that's progressing and what to
- 0:58expect from the club and the teams this season.
- 1:02So yeah, real exciting stuff and we'll be speaking to them in a
- 1:05little while. But as always, let's start off
- 1:07this evening with these local sporting headlines and Nigel has
- 1:10them. Hello, Nigel.
- 1:11Hello, good evening and here is your headlines for the 10th of
- 1:15April. We'll start with Posh and Peter.
- 1:18United dug deep to claim an excellent point against
- 1:21Championship bound Cardiff City. Posh had to concede a plenty of
- 1:25territory in possession to a very athletic Cardiff side but
- 1:28shrugged off huge blows either side of the interval to come
- 1:32from behind to draw one one in a pulsating contest.
- 1:35Blow number one was the loss of key defender Tom Lee after a
- 1:38nasty looking challenge on the stroke of half time.
- 1:42And blow #2 arrived 3 minutes into the second-half when
- 1:45Cardiff Alex Robertson scored from a harshly awarded free
- 1:49kick. But Posh responded within 60
- 1:52seconds with a neat finish from Harry Leonard after a fine pass
- 1:55by Carl Lisby. And that's how it stayed despite
- 1:59both sides showing commitment to attack.
- 2:02This was a hard earned point with a level of performance
- 2:05which should generate more positive results in the games
- 2:08that remain this season. Next up for Posh is a trip to
- 2:11Lancashire tomorrow against the Blackpool side who sit just
- 2:14above the relegation places who are desperate for the three
- 2:18points. Posh could have a couple of
- 2:20surprise inclusions in their squad on Saturday.
- 2:23Posh Bosh Luke boss Luke Williams has revealed.
- 2:26Veteran centre backed Tom Lees is keen to play Despite that
- 2:30injury suffered on Bank Holiday Monday and Kiwi international
- 2:34Matt Garber is back in full training.
- 2:37If he comes through a couple of late sessions, he could also be
- 2:40involved on Saturday. Garber hasn't played since
- 2:43January the 31st defeat at home to Huddersfield across the City
- 2:48and Peterborough Sports. After Four Seasons of fighting
- 2:51against the odds in a division full of former Football League
- 2:54clubs with full time status. It ended with a time 2 nil
- 2:58defeat at Oxford City. Sports created very little in
- 3:02the game, which was disappointing after a rousing
- 3:05performance against Kings Lynn just a few days before.
- 3:08That left Sports 10 points from safety with just three games to
- 3:12go. Sports entertain Telford
- 3:14tomorrow and what will be their final game at Pym's Park this
- 3:17season. The return fixture back in
- 3:19September was a bizarre encounter with Peterborough's
- 3:22team bus breaking down and the home keeper getting sent off
- 3:25with no sub keeper on the bench. Telford still came out three two
- 3:29winners despite all the drama. Manager Michael Gash is hoping
- 3:33for a less dramatic game this time around but said yesterday
- 3:36that it was so important that his team set the scene early
- 3:39tomorrow and finish their home campaign with a win and three
- 3:43points. Meanwhile, Posh Women can cap an
- 3:46outstanding season this weekend by clinching a National League
- 3:49title. A win for unbeaten Posh at lowly
- 3:52Kidderminster Harriers will seal top spot for Jake Paul's side
- 3:56and with it promotion to the Northern or Southern Premier
- 3:59Division. Posh still have three games to
- 4:01play to get the three points they need and it will be a major
- 4:05shock if they didn't arrive this weekend.
- 4:07Should they pick up another positive result, Posh will
- 4:10stretch their unbeaten run to 20 league games this season and 27
- 4:15overall, a run which covers more than 450 days.
- 4:19Goalkeeper Neve Corrie could also sweep the the league's
- 4:24Golden Glove award on Sunday. She has 12 clean sheets and a
- 4:28closest rival, Lee Fields. Colette Bell is next best with
- 4:3210 with just two games to play, Peterborough Panthers have named
- 4:36their team for their Spring Triangle meeting against host
- 4:39Mildenhall Fen Tigers and the Rye House Rockets on Sunday,
- 4:43April the 25th. A successful trip to West Row
- 4:46last year saw the Panthers bring home the Simon Barton Memorial
- 4:50Trophy surrounded by a fantastic crowd and the club are looking
- 4:54forward to giving their fans another exciting meeting.
- 4:58Paul Stark, a former four team championship and KO Cup winner
- 5:02with the club, will again lead Panthers.
- 5:04He will be joined by Aaron Butcher and Luke Harris, who
- 5:07also played key roles in last year's success at Mildenhall,
- 5:11along with some fresh faces. Seth Norman, a 15 year old with
- 5:15a bright future, makes his Panthers debut alongside former
- 5:19Panthers mascot Mickey Simpson and former Fen Tiger Jack
- 5:23Kingston in BMX and jumping. Jess Maria of the Peterborough
- 5:27BMX Club finished an excellent second in a European competition
- 5:31in teal in the Netherlands. Marriott claimed silver in the
- 5:35female 1516 category. The city club also sent 29 races
- 5:40to round two of the East Anglian BMX Regional Summer Series in
- 5:45Ipswich. There were seven class wins for
- 5:47Peterborough riders with Frederick State claiming 2 of
- 5:51them. He was first male, 12 cruiser
- 5:53and 1st 9:00 to 12:00 cruiser. The other club winners were
- 5:57Charlotte Butbe, Lottie MacFarlane, Bradbury Golden,
- 6:01Dylan Dixon and Leah Pearson. City of Pittsburgh Hockey Club
- 6:05have reported there have been 2 promotions and no relegations
- 6:09after the final league tables were confirmed this week.
- 6:12The women's first finished champions in East Division One
- 6:15North and were promoted into the East Premier Division and the
- 6:19men's first finished 6th in their division.
- 6:22The other title winners were the men's sixth who finished top in
- 6:26the East Division 5 NW. And finally, local veteran
- 6:30athletes, including a number of over 70s enjoyed a successful
- 6:35Easter weekend. Peterborough Neem Valley
- 6:38Athletic Club had four athletes in action in the European
- 6:41Masters Indoor Championship held in Poland.
- 6:44Dave Brown narrowly missed out on making over 45 on the over
- 6:4945800m final after clock in a time of two minutes and seven
- 6:54seconds. I'm sorry, 22 will skip that.
- 6:59Maxwell placed twelve in the Over 35 pentathlon and the high
- 7:04spot of his competition was a second place finish in the shot
- 7:07with 11.6569 meters. Simon A Church finished second
- 7:12in the over 50s weighted throw and although it was an indoor
- 7:15championship, an outdoor cross country race was included in the
- 7:19itinerary and Paul Parking finished 20th in the Over 60
- 7:23Cattery, finishing the 4th. Great bitten runner, and that's
- 7:27your headlines. Very fast.
- 7:30He did. Yeah, I'm going to.
- 7:31I'm going to learn to tell the time I think.
- 7:34Great stuff happening in the city and the posh women on the
- 7:37verge of history. Absolutely.
- 7:39They've had a, they've had a great season, long, long
- 7:43unbeaten run played at London Road this year as well, or
- 7:48should I say Western Home Stadium.
- 7:49But yeah, they've they've done well and they can they can
- 7:53finish it all off this weekend. Absolutely.
- 7:55And you, you kind of OK. Do you rub shoulders with them
- 7:57at Pyms Park when you're doing your your Peter sports worker?
- 7:59Yeah, they train on a on a Thursday night most weeks and
- 8:03most of their home games, like apart from that one, the western
- 8:06homes have been played at Pyms Park on a Sunday.
- 8:08So yeah, seen quite a bit of the the posh women this year and
- 8:12they've they've just had an amazing season.
- 8:14They have them, they're absolutely superb.
- 8:15So yeah, wishing them all the best and odds on that they will
- 8:18get promoted and and as champions, which is brilliant.
- 8:21So yeah, wishing them all the best.
- 8:23Right, let's take a short break now and we'll be back in a few
- 8:26minutes talking cricket with David Clark, captain of
- 8:28Peterborough Town Cricket Club. And Tim over who's one of the
- 8:32club members and players there as well.
- 8:35So stay tuned, it's PCR FM. You're listening to PCR Sports.
- 8:50Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR FM with myself,
- 8:54Dipam and Nigel. This week we're talking
- 8:56crickets. But just before we turn our
- 8:58attention to David and Tim, just a reminder, you can listen to us
- 9:01in many ways and anywhere in the world as well.
- 9:04The old fashioned way, One O 3.2 FM, our DAB.
- 9:08And you can also get us online on pcrfm.co.uk or download our
- 9:13app to play on a mobile device or ask your smart speaker to
- 9:16play PCRFM. So we are available to you
- 9:19anywhere in the world so you don't miss a moment of any show
- 9:22on this station ever again. But yeah, tonight's agenda is
- 9:26cricket and we're in the accompaniment of David Clark and
- 9:29Tim over both from the Peterborough Town Cricket Club.
- 9:33Welcome gents, how are you both? Yeah, all good.
- 9:35Thanks. Thanks for having me.
- 9:36On yeah, Thanks for coming by. It's always good to see you both
- 9:38and yeah, the pre season and and the cricket season upon us,
- 9:44which which is good because the weather starts getting better as
- 9:46well, which is always a great thing.
- 9:48But yeah, how are how are things pre season about to start in a
- 9:52week or so And it's good to see the lads again and and get
- 9:55everyone back in in the dressing room.
- 9:57Yeah, absolutely. It's yeah, It's been a long
- 9:59winter. Yeah.
- 10:01We started training up in indoor February time.
- 10:04We've had a few outdoor, outdoor sessions as well at the hockey
- 10:07club, doing a bit of fielding and fitness, so it's been good
- 10:10to get the lads together as well for those.
- 10:12But yeah, our in earnest, our pre season starts this Saturday
- 10:16with a training session down at the club and then next Saturday
- 10:20we have our first pre season game against North Wales
- 10:22Academy. So yeah, it'll be a good gauge
- 10:25to see where we're at before the season starts properly.
- 10:28Which is a bit strange this year because we start with T20
- 10:32towards the end of May, sorry, at the start of May and we start
- 10:34the Premier League towards the end of May.
- 10:36So it's a little bit of a different format for us.
- 10:38So what normally happens? How's this?
- 10:40How's it different so? Normally we start the league
- 10:42campaign at the end of April and we kind of do that all the way
- 10:46through. But this year we're starting
- 10:48with AT20, which is going to be 3 weeks of having two games a
- 10:52day and then we're going to have a finals day on the Sunday.
- 10:55And then after that we start the league and it's a slightly
- 10:59different kind of format of the league as well.
- 11:00We're starting with colour kit, pink ball, win, lose and then we
- 11:04go into win lose, draw for the middle section of the season and
- 11:07then we finish it again with pink ball coloured kit to end
- 11:09the season. So it looks a lot different for
- 11:12us this year, but I think it's, yeah, I think it's a quite
- 11:15exciting changes for for the league.
- 11:16Yeah. And is that So what, what kind
- 11:18of brought those changes along then?
- 11:19Is that just a decision, a kind of regional authority level or?
- 11:23League level, yeah. So our league basically Tier
- 11:27One, which is the Premier League in Division One, voted in those
- 11:30changes in October. So our second team actually
- 11:33followed the similar kind of process.
- 11:35They don't do the T20 at the start, they do the pink ball
- 11:38coloured kit and then they do the whites and red ball for the
- 11:41middle part and then finish with pink ball coloured kit.
- 11:43So there's going to be a different kind of season for us.
- 11:45But I think All in all, exciting changes and I think ones that
- 11:49will bring, you know, better cricket throughout the summer
- 11:52hopefully. Yeah, fantastic.
- 11:54And the squad itself, how's it looking?
- 11:57Obviously, I mean, just as a reminder to the listeners,
- 12:00you're you're back as as captain.
- 12:01This is your second season back as captain.
- 12:04You spent a number of glorious years previously winning umpteen
- 12:07trophies and you're back now. And how's it feel?
- 12:10First and foremost, you know, being back as captain for the
- 12:13last couple of seasons? Yeah, now it's felt good, Yeah,
- 12:16good to be back in the hot seat and yeah, really looking forward
- 12:19to challenging the season and yeah, getting the boys together
- 12:23again tomorrow and and next week ahead of the season.
- 12:25So yeah, really looking forward to to the season ahead.
- 12:29I think it's an exciting season for us.
- 12:30We've obviously finished second last year, so we want to
- 12:34hopefully improve and, and, and push that title again hopefully
- 12:36and and also competing at the competition.
- 12:39So we did pretty well in the the national knockout last year, got
- 12:42to the last 16 in the country. We've managed to beat Brentwood
- 12:46who are the previous champion. So we can take a lot of
- 12:48confidence from that going into this season.
- 12:51And then also the T20 competition as well.
- 12:53So yeah, there's a lot of cricket to be played and we're
- 12:56all looking forward to it. Fantastic.
- 12:57And then as I mentioned, going back to the squad itself, then
- 13:00any new additions, any youngsters coming through on on
- 13:04the conveyor belt? Yeah, lots of youngsters.
- 13:07Hopefully this season a lot of them will play in the second
- 13:09team, which is in Division One, which is quite high standard.
- 13:13We're the only second team in Division One in the Northants
- 13:15pyramid, so it's actually really good for us as a first team
- 13:19where we can call on second team players who it's not that much
- 13:22of a step up for us. So yes, a lot of talented
- 13:26youngsters, Tim, isn't there like the likes of Joss and DJ,
- 13:29very young at the moment, sort of 1415.
- 13:31But we'll definitely go on to hopefully be good Premier League
- 13:34cricketers and beyond. So yeah, looking forward to
- 13:38seeing them sort of developing the seconds and getting a few
- 13:41scores and taking some wickets. But in the first thing we've got
- 13:44a new player called Jasper and Singh from Kettering.
- 13:48He's a left arm bowler who bowled against this last season,
- 13:51pretty good bowler and yeah, he balls at good pace, so it's
- 13:55going to be really interesting to see him in action this year.
- 13:57And having, having, having him on your side rather than being
- 14:00against him. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 14:02Yeah, he hit hit a couple of us last year, one on the head and
- 14:05couple of wrapped on the gloves and the pads and stuff.
- 14:07So yeah, he's he's quite slippery to face.
- 14:10So yeah, we're looking forward to having him with us.
- 14:12And although Kettering went down, he had a pretty good
- 14:14season personally. So yeah, glad he wants to, kind
- 14:18of. Come to us progress as cricket
- 14:20and hopefully you can get some games for minor counties and
- 14:23beyond. So yeah, he's definitely got
- 14:25that potential in terms of some changes in the squad, editions,
- 14:28etcetera. Do you do you have a kind of a
- 14:30football style transfer window or can you sign players anytime
- 14:33during the season? How does it work?
- 14:34Generally it all happens pre season, but yeah, I think teams
- 14:36have got until kind of mid June, July time to do their final
- 14:40transfers and then you kind of set at your own club.
- 14:42Yeah. But yeah, generally a lot of
- 14:44teams try and get there transfers done early in the in
- 14:48the winter. Obviously with Jazz Graham being
- 14:51away in Australia, we had to wait until kind of March time to
- 14:55get that sorted. But yeah, really pleased he's
- 14:57come over to us. But yeah, a lot of clubs in the
- 14:59league of there's been quite a lot of movement of players and
- 15:02stuff. So it's it's going to be an
- 15:03interesting, yeah. Fantastic.
- 15:04And any overseas signings for you this season?
- 15:07No. So no overseas player for us
- 15:09this year. We had Hyatt last year, but he's
- 15:12staying in Norway this summer, so yeah, we're yeah, no overseas
- 15:17this year. Yeah, that's fine.
- 15:18That's not a bad thing. I suppose you can like say you
- 15:20can nurture talent from from local and regional and, and
- 15:23within the club as well, which is which is good.
- 15:24So in terms of, like I say, you're back as, as captain
- 15:29second season or second full season, obviously, I guess it
- 15:34holds you in good stead. The experience you had from your
- 15:35first stint as captain a number of years ago and, and, and the
- 15:38success that you had there. Has that kind of changed you as
- 15:41a captain in terms of your leadership style, your approach,
- 15:44your methods? What, what can you draw upon
- 15:46from from previous experiences? Yeah, I can draw a lot from
- 15:49previous experiences and different situations in the
- 15:51season, different games, different challenges you get
- 15:54thrown upon you. So yeah, there's a number of
- 15:56different things that have happened over, you know, 9 or 10
- 15:59years really that I can draw upon.
- 16:01There's a lot of experience I can draw on as well.
- 16:03So and a lot of players have still with us as well playing.
- 16:07So it's it's really good to to have those players by my side,
- 16:11the likes of Chris Milner, the likes of Jamie, all been playing
- 16:15at the club for a long time now. So yeah, it's yeah, it's a real
- 16:20honour and privilege to to catch in the club.
- 16:22Yeah, brilliant. And it's, I guess it's good to
- 16:24have that bit of call within the squad that have been there for a
- 16:27while because it, it kind of carries that fault, carries the
- 16:30kind of culture, the the sort of what the ethos of the club is
- 16:34and that kind of flavour to the youngsters and the new players
- 16:37are coming in to kind of continue have that continuation
- 16:39of what the club is about and how they want to be.
- 16:41Yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean the club coach is a
- 16:43really big thing for me. I think for me it's about making
- 16:47players feel really welcome and really comfortable within the
- 16:50the first team environment. And when players come in from
- 16:52the twos or we've got a new signing, yeah, it's really
- 16:56important to make them feel welcome and so they can perform
- 16:58their best. So yes, in terms of my
- 17:01leadership, I don't put too much pressure on people.
- 17:03Just go out there and try and play their own game and and
- 17:06hopefully you can win more moments than you lose and then
- 17:09generally you'll have some some good success if you do that.
- 17:11Yeah, absolutely. And is there a kind of a
- 17:14specific type of culture or club values that that that are being
- 17:17sort of promoted and and used as a benchmark effectively?
- 17:20Yeah. So we've got our club values
- 17:22which we we put together as a committee I think a couple of
- 17:26years ago, Tim. So yeah, it's all about
- 17:29preparation, unity, respect and excellence.
- 17:31So there are core values which we kind of have not just as a
- 17:36senior section, we have it for our juniors as well.
- 17:38So we feel it's a really important and some really
- 17:42important words and, and things to go by really so and.
- 17:45There's, you've mentioned those senior players, there's a lot of
- 17:50core members of the team that have been core members of the
- 17:52team for a very long time. And some of the younger lads
- 17:55who, who I predominantly play with see that example and just
- 17:59follow it. You know, it is such a, a good
- 18:02club to be a part of and we've got to, to embrace the, the
- 18:06leadership we give some of the, some of the kids as well, you
- 18:08know. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:09And I guess if you have that thread constantly happening or
- 18:12or being present throughout the club, then soon as somebody
- 18:15comes in that's that's, that's that standard set, isn't it?
- 18:17They're not going to look any do anything different, be any, any
- 18:20in be in any way different. They just, that's just an
- 18:23expectation, isn't it, To come in and and be like that and
- 18:26display those behaviours and and and promote those values?
- 18:29Yeah, definitely. That's it, yeah.
- 18:30Includes and training matches, everything when you represent
- 18:33the club. So yeah, it's really important
- 18:36that we have those values and they're up in our changing room
- 18:38so everyone can see them. And yeah, it's really important
- 18:42that the the juniors and seniors do go by those values.
- 18:44So yeah, it's really good. Fantastic.
- 18:47So the club itself, there's multi level teams in there, men,
- 18:53women, girls, boys. So just give us a brief and talk
- 18:56us through the different levels that are are within the club.
- 18:59Well, I mean, Dave can speak about the elite level.
- 19:03Over the course of a weekend and throughout the summer, we can
- 19:06see upwards of 200 people playing cricket for the club.
- 19:09Fantastic. It's a really well managed club,
- 19:12there's six teams at the weekend, We've got a girl set up
- 19:15that we're keen to expand this year with the hope of generating
- 19:19some more fundraising which we'll go into a bit later.
- 19:22I hope so. Saturdays and Sundays primarily
- 19:26with training throughout the week.
- 19:27We've got youth matches throughout the week.
- 19:30Looking at the diary for, for the season, there's not a lot of
- 19:34time off and actually Dave's predecessor chap called Nick
- 19:37Green is now taking up the role of groundsman.
- 19:40So he's got a very, very busy, busy summer ahead.
- 19:44So yeah, there's always going to be some form of cricket going on
- 19:47subject to weather. But yeah, it's a, it's a
- 19:51thriving club and there's always something going on.
- 19:54And we're, we're grateful to be right in the heart of the city
- 19:57where, well, we're still growing as a population, you know?
- 19:59Yeah, absolutely. Lot of lot of action.
- 20:01Brilliant, fantastic and and I think that's something that
- 20:04we've noticed on the show because you know, you, you, the
- 20:06club has been friends of the show for a while.
- 20:08We in fact did an outside broadcast from there during a
- 20:10charity match with a with the England Legends 11, which is
- 20:14fantastic. So we've kind of seen the recent
- 20:17history in the story and how the club's progressing and it's a
- 20:19very proactive forward thinking club.
- 20:22And it's, you know, and you know, you get the sense that
- 20:25anyone like you say that the feeling of people being
- 20:27welcomed, the way the club is run, it's, it's done in a, you
- 20:30know, in a fantastic way, isn't it?
- 20:32Yeah, absolutely. I think we've we've got four
- 20:34teams as well on the Saturday now.
- 20:36Last year we introduced a a fourth team which has been
- 20:39really successful getting the juniors into play, obviously two
- 20:42teams on a Sunday. And also the the girls who've
- 20:45been training throughout the winter.
- 20:47I believe they've been over at pizza for school doing the
- 20:49indoor sessions and they've not stopped all winter.
- 20:51So they're going to carry that on this year and they're going
- 20:54to do their training on Saturdays and Tuesdays, I
- 20:57believe. So yeah, that's a really growing
- 20:59section for us and hopefully soon we can get our first
- 21:02women's team, but they'll be doing some junior women's match,
- 21:05junior girls matches throughout this season.
- 21:08Brilliant. So that's really.
- 21:09But again, it's, I think again, the way that typifies the way
- 21:11the club is running is that you're setting, you're not
- 21:13rushing into creating a women's thing, you're setting a
- 21:15foundation. So there's a pathway from a
- 21:18younger age into that senior sort of women's team, isn't it?
- 21:21And, and girls can play same team as as the the men.
- 21:25You know, we've already had girls representation in senior
- 21:28cricket that happened last season, if not the season
- 21:31before. So it's already happening.
- 21:33We've got to embrace it. We've got to expand the
- 21:36opportunities available for everybody.
- 21:38We've got various girls participation across the club as
- 21:43Dave just mentioned. We've also got a girls
- 21:45tournament coming up on the 4th of May.
- 21:47So we're keen just to expand that and that's any team could
- 21:50come and play, you know. So there's a currently a call
- 21:53out for other girls teams across Peterborough and the wider area
- 21:57to come and play on that day. I think you need a team of team
- 22:00of I think minimum 10 girls to to come and participate.
- 22:03Entry. And it's all the club over, so
- 22:05a. Day so we're.
- 22:07Keen to promote those sorts of events?
- 22:08Host those events, you know, help however we can to to
- 22:12promote the game that way. Brilliant.
- 22:14Sounds good, right? Let's take a short break and
- 22:17we're back with more cricket chats in a few minutes with Dave
- 22:19and Tim. Stay tuned, it's Peter FM.
- 22:32You're listening to PCR Sports. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 22:42Show with myself, Dipam and Nigel this week.
- 22:45You can keep in touch throughout the week through our socials
- 22:48search for PCR Sports on Facebook or at Sports PCR on X
- 22:54and your PCR FM on Instagram. So yeah, reach out to any
- 22:58updates sporting wise. Let us know if you want to be a
- 23:02guest on the show, you're part of a club or an individual
- 23:05that's doing well at your sport, then give us a shout and let's
- 23:08see whether we can make that happen.
- 23:10But back to tonight's guests, Dave Clark and Tim over from
- 23:14Peterborough Town Cricket Club. We've been speaking to Dave in
- 23:16the first half part of the show and just going over to Tim now.
- 23:20Tim plays at the club and he's doing a lot of off field
- 23:26activities as well. Tim, first about your playing
- 23:29side of things, how long have you been with the club?
- 23:32Of very long time, since I was about 13 years old.
- 23:36So that's coming on 25 years or so.
- 23:40That's amazing. You'll be getting a carriage
- 23:41clock soon. Say again, You'll be getting a
- 23:43carriage clock soon, Yeah? Well, it's no, it's been, it's
- 23:46been great and, and in fact, I joined similar time to some of
- 23:50the players that are still, you know, senior members of the
- 23:52team. So it's a great place to play.
- 23:56Yeah. And and and again, it typifies
- 23:58the club isn't the, there is a lot of long standing players
- 24:01there because the environment has been created there.
- 24:03And yeah, yeah. And actually I've, I've been
- 24:05down in, I've played down in Bristol for a few years as well
- 24:08as part of part of that time. And to come back to Peterborough
- 24:13and sort of just know what other, what other clubs are run
- 24:16like and seeing Peterborough come back, you know, gives.
- 24:21You a good kind of measure, doesn't it?
- 24:22Yeah, it doesn't. Yeah.
- 24:23Yeah, I see. So how's your how's your playing
- 24:25career been then for those 25 odd years?
- 24:28I mean, I've done some things that's good.
- 24:30I've taken a hat trick for the club.
- 24:32I've scored a scored a century last season for the club.
- 24:34Brilliant. So I'm still improving I think.
- 24:36Yeah, yeah, I've played for every team.
- 24:39So that's quite a. Problem isn't.
- 24:41It fact, actually. So is it a good fact I've I've
- 24:44played for the ones twos, threes and fours?
- 24:47Wow. I've not played for the girls
- 24:50though unfortunately but I have been quite close.
- 24:53To them, but I say if there's mixed teams you might get an
- 24:55opportunity to play alongside. Girls I have, I have handed one
- 24:57of the girls a debut. OK, so that's my, my
- 25:00contribution. But yeah, I've, I've learnt
- 25:03actually I've, I've moved from being a bowler to a batter and
- 25:08for the last three or four years for some reason I've started to
- 25:11open the open the batting. But being captain has probably
- 25:14helped that. So I've I've maybe it's because
- 25:17there's a shortage of volunteers to open the Bay.
- 25:20But so you just select yourself a number.
- 25:21One I'll, I'll take up. It's a, it's a thankless job
- 25:23sometimes, isn't it, Dave? But yeah, somebody's got to go
- 25:27out there and and see off the new ball.
- 25:29And actually I don't mind it. The only time I do mind it is if
- 25:33if you're off on the first over. If you get bowled out in the
- 25:36first over, it's a long, long day.
- 25:38Do you still bowl as well or you're just batting now?
- 25:40I'm supposed supposed to not bowl, but occasionally if things
- 25:45things are going badly, I might might turn my own off.
- 25:48But if my doctor's listening to this, I don't definitely.
- 25:52Don't bow. Doesn't that now make you an all
- 25:54rounder then? Oh yeah, and I'll take, I'll
- 25:56keep wicket as well sometimes if we're if we're short of a wicket
- 25:59keeper. So I try and try and help out
- 26:01where I can but. Fantastic.
- 26:03You're what's known as a utility player.
- 26:05Yeah. Can do anything, turn your
- 26:06hands, anything. Something like that.
- 26:08Yeah, yeah, yeah, fantastic. And you're the committee this
- 26:11season as well. What?
- 26:12So what sort of commitments and what sort of work does?
- 26:16That involve so primarily fundraising, sponsorship.
- 26:19We're we're blessed with some sponsors.
- 26:22I'm going to I'm going to try and reel them off.
- 26:23So Dow, Rod Fain Clinic, Antli Lettings are all really big
- 26:31supporters of the club and we, we, you know, struggled to put
- 26:35on the amount of services and, and support for the game
- 26:37without, without their support. So we're really thankful for
- 26:40that. We are open for, for more
- 26:42sponsorship as well. And we're about to go live with
- 26:45a fund rank fundraising exercise through crowdfunder.co.uk.
- 26:50We'll we'll put a link to our fundraising when it goes live
- 26:53next weekend and any support would be.
- 26:55We'll share that. Yeah, and as part of that what
- 26:57we're trying to do is, is raise £15,000.
- 27:00That is then matched by Sport England.
- 27:03So we've got an application in with Sport England and it's
- 27:07supporting the growth of the game, growth of women's cricket.
- 27:10Obviously we're in in the centre of Peterborough, which is
- 27:13traditionally quite a cultural diverse place.
- 27:16And we're blessed with, you know, currently a fairly good
- 27:19setup that, you know, it's a good place to play cricket.
- 27:21And we're keen to embrace that and grow our club so that
- 27:26effectively our our large pitch, we can fund additional
- 27:30artificial tracks at either end. We can put on more training
- 27:34sessions, more matches, more equipment, you know, a girls
- 27:38coach, for example. And that's what we're trying to
- 27:40do with this, this fundraising effort.
- 27:42Sounds really good because I know the club is developing the
- 27:45girls side of of the sport has been for the last sort of few
- 27:48years. And I know all friends of the
- 27:51show, Bill Allen Dinesh who've been on before with with some of
- 27:54the players and are doing some good work there.
- 27:56And I think they could be going to be on on the show again later
- 27:58in the year as well. So there is a lot of good things
- 28:00happening there is on the girls side.
- 28:01Oh absolutely. And we're keen to to back it.
- 28:04The the whole reason that Peterborough Town Cricket Club
- 28:06exists is to provide that cricketing service for people of
- 28:10Peterborough to come play and doesn't matter what age group
- 28:15you are, what gender it's, it's available for everybody.
- 28:18Yeah, brilliant. In terms of the season ahead for
- 28:20you personally and and the team that you'll be representing,
- 28:23what's what's your thoughts? Oh.
- 28:24I've got to dust my kit off is my, my pre season has been
- 28:30limited. I've got a 2 year old daughter
- 28:32that I look after on Saturday morning.
- 28:34So I might not have been training as much, but she has,
- 28:37she's been pottering around and learning how to catch.
- 28:41I'll, I'll, I'll be there playing for the the threes and
- 28:44fours. He used to be captain for the
- 28:45last three or four years. So I'll be supporting the new
- 28:47captain, a chap called Kasim, who's he's a really handy off
- 28:51spinner to to really sort of bed in.
- 28:55And as Dave mentioning, there's a lot of senior players and I
- 28:59count myself in that group to sort of advise others during the
- 29:02game. Let's try and be a good example
- 29:04for for some of the youth coming through, but also pick those
- 29:08those younger members of the team and say this person is
- 29:11deserving of a chance. And it's great to see Dave pick
- 29:14some younger players in his pre season games, you know, to have
- 29:18a look at them and and you know, to give them a first team debut,
- 29:22you know, 1516 years old is glorious.
- 29:26So it's great to see that sort of continuity through the team.
- 29:30That's brilliant. That's what preseason is all
- 29:31about, isn't it? Giving those youngster chance.
- 29:34You never know, one of them might take to it superbly and
- 29:37maintain it throughout the season and it becomes part of a
- 29:39regular player in the squad. Or at the very least it it gives
- 29:42him that flavour and and holds him good stead for maybe next
- 29:45season. We've got a good track record of
- 29:47developing players. I mean, Dave can speak about
- 29:49some of the players that he's had in his team that have gone
- 29:51on not only to play well for Peterborough and help us win
- 29:55titles, but to go and play for minor counties and counties and
- 30:00some even playing for England and Australia.
- 30:02Well, Alex Green. He was on the show a few years
- 30:06ago. On the show, yeah, he went to
- 30:07the World Cup with England and obviously got to the final.
- 30:11But yeah, we've got, you know, a number of youngsters and a few,
- 30:14you know, a core of our first team have actually grown up
- 30:17through our youth set up. The likes of Silly Salim, Karen
- 30:19Powell Singh regulars in the first team, likes of Scott
- 30:23Howard and Kyle, slightly older than them, but they've also come
- 30:25through the youth system. So it's really important, you
- 30:29know, having those players come through in the like you say the
- 30:31core of the club is made from your junior set up and, and what
- 30:35they do to go on to to represent the club, not just at first team
- 30:38level, but throughout the club. I just want to say like having
- 30:42people like Tim at the club is great.
- 30:43You know, he does everything. He he's like he says, he's
- 30:46played in every team. He does stuff off the field.
- 30:48Which a lot of available Saturdays Dave as well.
- 30:51He's putting his hat in the room.
- 30:53A lot of people don't see a lot of the stuff that goes on off
- 30:55the field. There's a lot of effort that
- 30:57goes on, particularly things like fundraising, setting up
- 31:00these applications, just general running of the club.
- 31:03So yeah, it's great to have people like Timmy who are still
- 31:06involved and still have that really good enthusiasm for the
- 31:09game, and it rubs off on players, it really does.
- 31:12Yeah, and that's what it's about, isn't it?
- 31:13It's just like like we spoke earlier, it's that continuation
- 31:16of what the club is about. And then, you know, the players
- 31:19like yourselves and then many others are there to to represent
- 31:21and champion that and to make sure that that continues as long
- 31:24as possible into the future as well.
- 31:26You know, long after, you know, you hang your pads up and, and.
- 31:30Yeah, that's it. You want to create, create a bit
- 31:31of a legacy. And yeah, like you say, once I
- 31:34stop playing and hopefully that, you know, we install those
- 31:36values in the the kind of younger generation, you can take
- 31:39up that mantle and keep the club moving forward.
- 31:42I think that's the key thing really.
- 31:43And hopefully we've put that in in place with the, you know, the
- 31:48kind of committee structure that we have.
- 31:49And yeah, it's, it's, it's just a nice sort of club to be
- 31:53involved in really. I mean, how far does the club
- 31:55think ahead in future and as a committee or as a club
- 31:58organization, do you, do you think, well, OK, this is where
- 32:00we want to aim to be in the next 5 years, next 10 years, How, how
- 32:03does that kind of operate or do you kind of do it a little bit
- 32:05more shorter term? Yeah, it's, I mean, we, we look
- 32:09at what the situation in the club is, you know, we need to be
- 32:12quite agile and, and respond to certain challenges.
- 32:17We need to have an open eye on on the future as well,
- 32:21generating things like we're speaking about launching our
- 32:24fourth team last year, we weren't sure how that was going
- 32:28to go, but the year before we looked at availability and and
- 32:31worked out right, are there sort of 7-8 players that are not
- 32:36getting a game. So therefore we need to do this
- 32:39fourth team, you see. And because we launched the
- 32:42fourth team last year, actually getting 11 players, normally
- 32:46we'd we'd think that'd be quite a challenge.
- 32:48But actually it's fine. And we're still having some
- 32:50weeks where actually we could have had a fifth team.
- 32:53So there's that desire to play cricket in Peterborough.
- 32:57We're championing it in terms of sort of long term planning what
- 33:01we want to do, you know, for the next sort of 2345 years.
- 33:06It's nice to have a a plan. The plans can change, but
- 33:09ultimately we need to continue growing the community game.
- 33:12We need to continue challenging for the title and that tends to
- 33:15replicate most years. You know, the types of things we
- 33:17do will change, but ultimately that that aim continues.
- 33:20Yeah. And it also having multiple
- 33:22teams then starts to create AI suppose a style of play or, or,
- 33:27or like say the culture that you want to promote throughout the
- 33:30club and that creates that, that pathway and, and players playing
- 33:34at that. You know, the fifth level,
- 33:35fourth level, third level, you know some like some senior pros
- 33:38are perhaps on on the way down to those levels, but a lot in
- 33:41lot of cases youngsters in that level are looking to make it up
- 33:44towards the seconds and the firsts and that.
- 33:45So you kind of trying to replicate that throughout all
- 33:48the teams, aren't you really? And and youth is is everything
- 33:52right? Including the features.
- 33:55That that so those three and the third team and the fourth team
- 33:59primarily based or or made-up of youth players.
- 34:02So from age 15, even some players that are younger than
- 34:08that will make up half the team. Few senior professionals in
- 34:12there and a couple of old timers for the experience, you know,
- 34:17But ultimately that that is where the club's going to pick
- 34:19it's first team from in, you know, 3-4 years time.
- 34:23Brilliant. Yeah, it's important.
- 34:24I think like for us as a first team, we've got to get that
- 34:27balance right of having that competitive edge, having, you
- 34:30know, firepower to try and compete for silverware, but also
- 34:35have one eye on bringing youngsters through.
- 34:37And I think we do get that balance right.
- 34:40So yeah, it's more about doing that more this year and
- 34:43hopefully for years to come. So yeah, hopefully we can do a
- 34:46bit more and get get a few more players through this year as
- 34:48well. Yeah, sounds good, right?
- 34:50Let's take a final break there and we're back in a few minutes
- 34:53with Dave and Tim. Don't go away.
- 34:54It's PCR FM. You're listening to PCR Sports.
- 35:08Good evening and welcome back to the PCR Sports Show with myself,
- 35:11department and Nigel this week. If you missed the show so far,
- 35:15you missed an absolute cracker with Dave Clark and Tim over
- 35:17from the Peterborough Town Cricket Club.
- 35:19But fear not, if you go to our website after 7:00 on
- 35:22pcrfm.co.uk it will be uploaded and you can listen to it from
- 35:27the very start. So back to Tim and and Dave.
- 35:31Dave, if I can come to you, obviously captain for the first
- 35:34team this season pre season about to start and then the
- 35:38competition starts. You're saying is it early May,
- 35:41late April, middle of sorry, yeah, our T20 starts starts at
- 35:45the start of May and then our league starts at the end of
- 35:48that's it in terms of expectations for the season.
- 35:51I know like so you've tasted success in the past and and
- 35:54you're always there challenging. What's your kind of feeling for
- 35:57for this season? Yeah, also you came second last
- 36:00year, a little bit disappointing of some of the games you lost,
- 36:04but yeah, ideally want to be challenging for the title again.
- 36:07That's going to be one of our aims and doing well in one of
- 36:10the cups as well. So yeah, a a good run in the
- 36:13national knockout as always is really good for the club and you
- 36:16get to visit some nice grounds and play against some new teams
- 36:18from different Premier Leagues. So yeah, we'll see how we get on
- 36:23our first round. We're playing the winners of
- 36:24Hornsey or Buckhurst Hill in the first round at home, so that's
- 36:28on the 10th of May. So yeah, I'm very much looking
- 36:31forward to the season. Got very similar squad.
- 36:34The bulk of the players are all still with us and still playing,
- 36:37which is really good. And then obviously a new
- 36:40addition as well with Jazz Grand.
- 36:41So yeah, we're looking to to hopefully challenge finding
- 36:44again for the title. Yeah, so it's it's been a close
- 36:47rival you find and I know and have joined the the pack in the
- 36:50in the in the last few years as well.
- 36:51And it's always a fascinating battle within between the three,
- 36:54three sides. Yeah, it is.
- 36:56And there's a couple more teams we've I know, recruited pretty
- 36:58well this summer, this winter as well, and the likes of
- 37:01Geddington, Kisenbury have brought a few players in as
- 37:04well. So it's going to be an
- 37:05interesting season. It's going to be probably one of
- 37:07the most competitive the Northants Premier League because
- 37:09I think the beauty of our league with there only being 10 teams
- 37:13as a lot of teams can beat each other on on any given day.
- 37:17So it's a yeah, it's a really competitive league to be fair,
- 37:20and probably the most competitive I've seen in in a
- 37:23long time. So yeah, we're hoping to to be
- 37:25up there and get off to a good start in the in the twenty 20s.
- 37:28And how do you kind of sense how strong an opponent is going to
- 37:31be at this at this stage of the season going into pre season?
- 37:35How do you kind of gauge who are the strong side?
- 37:37OK, you, you're going to get your usual, you know, finders,
- 37:39your handles, but how do you then roughly gauge what other
- 37:42clubs might be doing in, in terms of strengthening or, you
- 37:44know, what sort of performance to expect from?
- 37:46Yeah, you kind of go on what they've done on social media
- 37:49they're, you know, announcing some players.
- 37:51Obviously the two of the teams have come up, Overstone and
- 37:53Loddington we won't know too much about, but we're playing
- 37:56Loddington in our first game in the T20 and in the league.
- 37:59So yeah, it'll be, it'll be good to play against them and, and
- 38:03see what they're about. But yeah, we're basically see
- 38:06how the first few weeks goes really and, and go from there.
- 38:09But yeah, if we kind of worry about our own game and try and
- 38:12perform our best, I think, yeah, that's the main thing really for
- 38:15us and. Is it, is it important to get a
- 38:17strong start in the season and then set the pace or can you
- 38:20norm, can you kind of make it up at other parts of season?
- 38:23I know obviously not. The head to head games will be
- 38:24key against findings and the angles are in it.
- 38:27Yeah, yeah, those games are key, but I think the games that let
- 38:30us down in the last couple of years of the teams tend to think
- 38:34we should be. So we lost twice to Owens last
- 38:37year, lost to Desbrah. So I think if we just cut out
- 38:41those silly mistakes, we'll naturally be challenging again
- 38:45anyway. So, yeah, I think it's all about
- 38:48obviously the format of the league is a little bit different
- 38:50this year, so it's going to be difficult to see and teams won't
- 38:54be really in the rhythm for the league until, you know, end of
- 38:57May, June. So it's going to be interesting.
- 38:59Yeah, because I say it could, some teams might take to it very
- 39:02quickly, some might it might upset their normal routine than
- 39:04what they've been used to for many years.
- 39:06And yeah, it's that transition from 2020 to league cricket.
- 39:09It's going to be interesting because I think normally we we
- 39:12have, you know, it takes three or four games for teams to get
- 39:15into the season. But I think this year the T20,
- 39:18it will probably be that we seen as more of a warm up for a lot
- 39:21of clubs to for the league. So we might see some some better
- 39:25performances at the start of the Premier League season.
- 39:27So yeah, going to be really interesting to see.
- 39:30And, and Tim mentioned he's played 25 odd years.
- 39:33What, what, what number of years are you?
- 39:36I think I'm 19 years. So I joined from Ramsey.
- 39:40So I played well, my youth cricket at Ramsey, joined
- 39:44Peterborough when I was 1516, played in the second team, did
- 39:52OK in the second team, got into the first team back, started
- 39:54banging at 8:00 and 7:00 and gradually worked my way up the
- 39:57order. And yeah, I found myself opening
- 39:59probably, you know, a few years in, in the top three, top 4.
- 40:04So yeah, sort of been in and around top 3 or 4 ever since.
- 40:07So yeah, it's been a, it's been a good journey.
- 40:10Played with some fantastic players along the way.
- 40:12Some really good players have gone on to do big things in the
- 40:15game, some big characters. You learn a lot under some
- 40:19certain leadership. So the likes of age as Mark
- 40:22Yields, who I play with early on, you just learn loads from
- 40:25those kind of guys and then hopefully I can put some of that
- 40:28kind of stuff into my leadership as well.
- 40:30Yeah, brilliant. Good stuff.
- 40:31And just to kind of finish off last couple minutes, just going
- 40:34just a reminder again of the fundraising team that's taking
- 40:37place. Just reminder what that is and
- 40:40how people can eventually donate to that.
- 40:42The we'll have a crowdfunder website set up dedicated to
- 40:48basically include more people that are able to play cricket in
- 40:52in Peterborough. That goes to expand the girls
- 40:55section and that will be launched through our social
- 40:58media channel, primarily on Instagram, Peterborough Town CC.
- 41:03And so that should go live in the next week.
- 41:08That'll run for six weeks. And we are looking for
- 41:12sponsorship, for players, for match balls, for all sorts of
- 41:18rewards. And yeah, so there'll be rewards
- 41:21as part of that. We're we're looking to try and
- 41:25funnel membership fees through that as well, all with the aim
- 41:28of of getting to this £15,000 figure which Sport England
- 41:32should match, we hope. Fantastic sounds really, really
- 41:36good. And just final one, Dave, back
- 41:39to you. If anyone listening wants to
- 41:41play cricket, have a go. Like we've spoken in the show,
- 41:45there's many levels they can they can play at at the club and
- 41:48and you know, male, female, girls, boys.
- 41:51What should I do if they're interested?
- 41:52Yeah, if they're interested, just drop us an e-mail at peace
- 41:54with town.cc@hotmail.co.uk or drop us a note on any of our
- 41:58socials and our admin will get back to you with all the
- 42:01details. Just a bit of an overview.
- 42:03So we have junior sessions on Friday night, every Friday
- 42:07evening. On Saturdays we do our girls
- 42:10Dynamo sessions. So they start on the 9th of May,
- 42:12I believe, and they run for 8 weeks.
- 42:15And then we'd also do the All Stars program, which starts on
- 42:18the 8th of May. So I think signups are still
- 42:20live for that. So yeah, everyone's more than
- 42:22welcome to to join. All the details will be on our
- 42:24socials if if you want to take a look at those.
- 42:27Brilliant. And you prefer obviously people
- 42:28get in touch so that that you know they're coming rather than
- 42:30just to turn up so that you can manage the numbers better and
- 42:32expect. Yeah, get in touch with us.
- 42:33You know, we've got coach who leads our sessions and we kind
- 42:35of need to plan the sessions and but yeah, prospective members
- 42:39are always welcome. Friday nights are huge at the
- 42:42club as well, so we can have 100 youth members and they'll bring
- 42:46their parents as well. So it's really quite a buzz on a
- 42:49Friday night with the All Stars and and the Dynamos going on and
- 42:52that sort of goes across the whole weekend as well.
- 42:54There's quite a lot of energy in the summer and looking forward
- 42:57to to get into the club. Brilliant.
- 42:58Sounds fantastic, right? Time's called us up.
- 43:01So Dave, Tim, thanks ever so much for coming in, giving up
- 43:04your time and sharing your thoughts and your views on on
- 43:07the coming season and the club itself.
- 43:09Absolutely brilliant, fascinating chat to you both and
- 43:11wishing you individually and the club all the success this year.
- 43:15And do keep in touch, let us know how it's going and we'll
- 43:18give you a shout out on the headlines.
- 43:19Thank you so and thanks for listening and joining us this
- 43:23evening. Enjoy your weekend.
- 43:24We'll be back again, same time, same place next week on PCRFM.
- 43:28Other than that, have a great one and do it safely wherever
- 43:31you're doing sporting wise. And bye for now, take care.
