Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is twenty minutes after ten o'clock and in some
- 0:02Speaker 1: great news we know that AFL in the territory. It's
- 0:05Speaker 1: going to be back, well, bigger and better in twenty
- 0:08Speaker 1: twenty two with three massive matches, including two to be
- 0:12Speaker 1: played in Darwin and that third which is destined for
- 0:15Speaker 1: Alice Springs. And joining us on the line to tell
- 0:17Speaker 1: us a little bit more about it, AFL ANDTCEO Sam
- 0:22Speaker 1: Gibson get a Sam.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Good Katy, thanks erving, Yeah, good to have.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You on the show. Sam. Tell us what can we
- 0:29Speaker 1: expect in twenty twenty two when it comes to the footy.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's great news this morning to be able
- 0:36Speaker 2: to confirm an extra game in Darwin. I guess he's
- 0:40Speaker 2: one way to look at it. With Gold Coast playing
- 0:43Speaker 2: what will be back to back week here in Darwin,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and then obviously down in our Springs we've got the
- 0:49Speaker 2: reigning premiers coming back to Alice Springs. So it's that's
- 0:54Speaker 2: a good it's a good news morning for a footy
- 0:57Speaker 2: fans across the territory.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly we've never had a double header light that before,
- 1:02Speaker 1: have we?
- 1:04Speaker 2: No, no, no, we're talking about this morning. We don't think
- 1:05Speaker 2: we have, and certainly Mark Evans, the CEO of the
- 1:10Speaker 2: Gold Coast, was up here this morning and talking about
- 1:13Speaker 2: all the initiatives that they're looking to do in the
- 1:16Speaker 2: week in between. Hopefully they'll stay for that week and
- 1:19Speaker 2: get amongst the community. So there's a lot of upside
- 1:22Speaker 2: to back to back rather than having two weeks spread
- 1:25Speaker 2: across the year.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And Sam, do we know yet? As I understand it's
- 1:30Speaker 1: round eleven and twelve, do we know yet who is
- 1:33Speaker 1: going to be playing against the Gold Coast?
- 1:37Speaker 2: If we know the first opponents, the Hawthorne will be
- 1:39Speaker 2: the first opponent in round eleven, and that's great. They
- 1:44Speaker 2: were due to come up last year Hawthorne. Obviously COVID
- 1:48Speaker 2: interrupted that, but they've got a pretty big following up here,
- 1:51Speaker 2: so that's great for Hawks fans. And later in the
- 1:56Speaker 2: week we'll understand who the second opponent will be and
- 2:00Speaker 2: and also Melbourne's opayment in how it springs.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I reckon it'll be great, no doubt. They're going to
- 2:06Speaker 1: be well sellout games at TiO and we're back to
- 2:10Speaker 1: being able to have it like at full capacity and everything,
- 2:12Speaker 1: aren't we.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, at this point, there's nothing stopping us from
- 2:18Speaker 2: you're getting to full capacity and you know you've been
- 2:21Speaker 2: to the footy before. It's a great sight to see
- 2:25Speaker 2: high quality football out on the field and all the
- 2:28Speaker 2: people enjoying the football from the stand. So hopefully it's
- 2:32Speaker 2: smooth sailing from now and to then and we're able
- 2:35Speaker 2: to execute that.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean last year was such a difficult one.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I know the year before was as well, and you
- 2:41Speaker 1: know for all sports, but particularly when you looked at
- 2:45Speaker 1: the AFL and trying to bring those games to the territory,
- 2:48Speaker 1: it was a tough year.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, look it was. It's been interesting because certainly from
- 2:54Speaker 2: a local forty point of view, things are going great
- 2:58Speaker 2: and people are coming out and watching local footy. But
- 3:01Speaker 2: to really round out the footy experience, we want to
- 3:05Speaker 2: bring this high quality content and the last year was difficult.
- 3:09Speaker 2: There's a lot of stops start. There was at one
- 3:12Speaker 2: point I think there was two games planned on one
- 3:15Speaker 2: weekend and that that got canceled due to something in Melbourne.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So hopefully, as I said before, we've got a bit
- 3:22Speaker 2: of clear air now and we can plan for these
- 3:25Speaker 2: matches and deliver them and people can get out and
- 3:29Speaker 2: enjoy it.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Same of those tickets on sale yet, are they still
- 3:32Speaker 1: a little way away?
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, not on sale yet, and that will the detail around,
- 3:39Speaker 2: you know, what time the matches are and all those
- 3:41Speaker 2: silly bits that will be worked through. So keep an
- 3:45Speaker 2: eye out on major events and if l n T
- 3:49Speaker 2: websites for the details. This is essentially just an early
- 3:54Speaker 2: heads up that footy's coming back. Now.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It's wonderful. I think so many people will be really
- 3:59Speaker 1: pleased to hear this, and I know that you know
- 4:02Speaker 1: that's so often with those different clubs that do travel
- 4:04Speaker 1: to the territory to play that there is a lot
- 4:07Speaker 1: that goes on, you know, in terms of being out
- 4:10Speaker 1: in the community and doing clinics with the kids and
- 4:13Speaker 1: that kind of thing. Is that made a little bit
- 4:15Speaker 1: easier than when you've got the likes of the Gold
- 4:17Speaker 1: Coast Sons here for two weekends in a row.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, look it is and Gold Coasts and both Gold
- 4:24Speaker 2: Coasts and Melbourne are really committed to that across there
- 4:28Speaker 2: their homes away from home, if you want to call that.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So they're very much I think we if they do
- 4:35Speaker 2: decide to stay in between the matches, which we'll hopeful
- 4:38Speaker 2: they do, they'll be here for ten days, and that
- 4:42Speaker 2: that just opens up a lot of opportunity, to know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: for them and their players to connect with schools and
- 4:49Speaker 2: communities not just across the top end, but also venturing
- 4:52Speaker 2: out into the remote communities in the other regional areas.
- 4:56Speaker 2: So you know, that's that's the real benefit of this
- 4:59Speaker 2: fact back speaks to which we've announced this morning.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, our wonderful stuff. Well, Sam Gibson, the a f
- 5:07Speaker 1: l n T CEO, good to speak with you this morning.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Thank you very much for having a chat with us.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Thanks Katie, thank you
