- 3:18SPEAKER_06: I mean, the guttering is very important right now.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: All those leaves getting in leaves, ranking, screen cleaning, all that good patuki stuff that comes out there, right?
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: Elite roofing here for all your guttering needs.
- 3:29SPEAKER_06: I don't know why like that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: I don't know why you're in guttering, roofing, guttering, guttering, needing roofing all that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: Exciting, roofing, guttering.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: It's all good.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: It's all good.
- 3:37SPEAKER_06: Elite.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna talk about the health and wellness of your home.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: It's very key.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Very key.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: And last week we were just talking about health and wellness of yourself with Crystal Vivolum.
- 3:50SPEAKER_06: Of your skin, your biggest organ.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: As you learned that from Crystal last week.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: I did.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: So hey, your home is your foundation.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: So think about it.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: You spend more time in your home than anywhere else sleeping, eating, recovering.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Well, let's back that up.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Sometimes I feel like I spend more time at work than I do at home.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: But anyway, we're sleeping there, eating there, recovering, spending time with family.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: So if your home isn't built or maintained with wellness in mind, it works against you.
- 4:21SPEAKER_06: It really does.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: And it's very crucial that we make that happen, right?
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: To keep that where it needs to be.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: And it's and it isn't just talk, it's real stuff.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna dive into that real stuff, like like poor air quality, bad lighting, moisture and mold.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Dude, ick, right?
- 4:39SPEAKER_06: I also want to talk about like smells, cleaning supply, like certain things.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's been times where I have used, okay, too much vinegar.
- 4:50SPEAKER_06: You would just die at this store.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: I want to hear it.
- 4:53SPEAKER_06: I used vinegar in my ceramic tub.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: Why let it sit overnight?
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: Guess what it did?
- 5:00SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's completely what what did it do?
- 5:03SPEAKER_06: It's like rough.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: It had to have taken off, I guess the porcelain of the what's your tub?
- 5:09SPEAKER_06: What it was an old one.
- 5:11SPEAKER_06: This was when it first came in.
- 5:13SPEAKER_06: I mean, it was white.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: It looks like a built-in.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Most most tubs are white.
- 5:19SPEAKER_06: But but you're right.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: It's a white tub.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: Well, they don't tell me what material that tub is.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: It's just a white tub.
- 5:27SPEAKER_06: But you know, the health and wellness of your home, cleaning supplies are an important thing.
- 5:31SPEAKER_06: You need to I mean, certain ones can strip, ruin floors, furniture, laminate.
- 5:38SPEAKER_06: And guess what?
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: That goes to our number one thing we talked about, poor air quality.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Because those chemicals will get into your cleaning solutions, into the air of your home, right?
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: And if you don't have a proper ventilation system, it stays in your home.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: It absorbs into your home.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: And then you're breathing it repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly repeatedly.
- 5:55SPEAKER_06: So does that go?
- 5:56SPEAKER_06: So obviously you can buy air purifiers.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: You got to make sure you're changing your our filters and our furnace and our air.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: I have it in my calendar, a reminder, to check my filters every month.
- 6:13SPEAKER_06: Every month.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: At our office and at home.
- 6:15SPEAKER_06: Because don't you think certain places are going to get dirtier faster?
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Well, they maybe on a farm.
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: Your house, probably out there in the True.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: But here's the thing too.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: As the weather gets warmer, this past weekend, windows were open everywhere.
- 6:30SPEAKER_06: That was gonna be my next.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Windows are open everywhere.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: And so all the dust that had accumulated in the windowsills between the screen and the window all summer are all winter long.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: And now you open the window, and guess what?
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Now it's in your home.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: That dust is in your home.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Landing on things, being in the air, circulating through your furnace system, right?
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Because sometimes I'm guilty of it.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Temperature's nice outside.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: Come in, open the windows.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Boom.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: I love opening my windows.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: But you forget to turn the furnace off, right?
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: The heating, and it kicks on because the air temp came down, which feels great.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: And now you're sucking all that through and you're just Chris.
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I want to tell you something.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: Uh-oh, please do.
- 7:11SPEAKER_06: I am sick right now that I have just learned this.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: I thought you meant physically sick.
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: Okay, so here's what I have always done.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: Here's what I've always done.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: The secret's coming out.
- 7:23SPEAKER_06: Window open season, whether it's you know, fall, spring, right, right, right, right.
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: I will always only turn the fan on on my like air conditioner.
- 7:33SPEAKER_06: Like I don't have the heat or cool on.
- 7:35SPEAKER_06: So what I'm doing is pushing dust and dirt and stuff all over my home.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: You are.
- 7:43SPEAKER_06: Guys, uh, he's helped me.
- 7:44SPEAKER_06: I'll never do it again.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Yes, I understand.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: But we will make it, we will make it better for you.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: I promise we'll make it better for you.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Just remember the key simple things that we do talk about here at our podcast, right?
- 8:00SPEAKER_06: They're here to help.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: And all those things we talked about, the poor air quality, bad lighting, moisture, and mold and temperature inconsistencies.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: We didn't talk about that.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: But temperature inconsistencies in your home, right?
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: You go from one home that's cold, hot, back and forth.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: Right, right, right, right.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: So all of these things can affect your sleep, your energy, your mood.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: You don't get moody, do you?
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: Never do I, my Chris.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna I'm gonna call Chris right now.
- 8:26SPEAKER_05: You might not after this weekend.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Yo, Chris.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: So, or they can also affect your long-term health.
- 8:36SPEAKER_06: I th I a hundred percent agree with that, the long term.
- 8:38SPEAKER_06: Thanks.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: So if you have mold in your home, because some people don't realize this, that so everyone thinks mold is bad.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Well, look, mold is a necessity.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: If we didn't have mold, we wouldn't have decay and things would not decompose, right?
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: You have to have that.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: There's only three to five known deadly mold spores out there in the world.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: Even if you're not allergic to mold, you inhale these, boom, it's gonna be a good thing.
- 9:03SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's what penicillin is derived from, right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: It's a yeah, penicillin is mold.
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: And you take it when you have an infection, right?
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Hello.
- 9:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: So here's the thing on that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Um, so if you have mold in your home and you are susceptible to that causing you breathing issues or sign issues, headaches, right?
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: So that's that can cause long-term effects on you.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: You just never know.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: Or if you have a home that is an older home that may have asbestos in it, and you disturb it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: That asbestos is a very small, can't see the fibers, and you get that in your lungs over long-term health.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Guess what happens?
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: Mesothelioma.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: There's all kinds of things that can happen from that.
- 9:46SPEAKER_06: And and what happens with both this mold and asbestos, like you said, a lot of the symptoms don't show up till years later, like you said, long term.
- 9:54SPEAKER_06: Now, my sister had mold that they discovered only in one room of her house, but it was in between the walls, Chris.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: So Oh yeah, yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: You know, that makes sense.
- 10:05SPEAKER_06: They had it checked, and here's the reason why.
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: Their girls just respiratory infection, rest after respiratory.
- 10:13SPEAKER_06: So, and I can't remember if it was Kimmy's idea or my mom's, but they're like, you need to have your home checked for sure enough.
- 10:20SPEAKER_06: But that's why it's important.
- 10:21SPEAKER_06: I mean It is.
- 10:23SPEAKER_06: Especially if you just buy a home that maybe somebody else lived in.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: True.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: You need to have it checked out.
- 10:29SPEAKER_03: And and home inspectors aren't not no no negativity to home inspectors, but you know, they're not out there checking on that stuff.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: If it's behind the walls, they're not checking it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_06: They That goes back to our episode a couple times ago.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 10:40SPEAKER_06: The contractors diagnosing your home as a doctor.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: First 60 seconds, what's the things we see in your home.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 10:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: No, exactly.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: And as we're talking about the health and wellness of your home, but that leads me back to our guest we had last week, Krista Vale, or Willow Lane Spa.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: And that's where Willow Lane Spa comes in.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: They offer the facials, the hydrofacials, the airbrushed tanning, the head spa, salon services, and more.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: And with their Willow 365 membership and private events they host, they provide that daily dose of rejuvenation just like a healthy home does.
- 11:12SPEAKER_06: Just like a healthy home does.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: So when you've built that wellness focused space in your home, treat yourself to some self-care at Willow Lane and back and forth, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: So that you are home.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Healthy home, healthy body, mind and soul.
- 11:24SPEAKER_06: And she had even told us how important it was for her spa itself, right?
- 11:30SPEAKER_06: The physic physical spa to look relaxing, rejuvenating.
- 11:36SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 11:36SPEAKER_06: Same thing for your home.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: So you can get a hold of Willowlane Spa at WillowlaneSpa.com, or you can give them a call at 217-275-2263, and they would love to help you.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Or you can email them at hello at WillowlandSpa.com.
- 11:52SPEAKER_06: That's so cute.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Actually, it's yeah, and that's perfect.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Hello at WillowlaneSpa.
- 11:57SPEAKER_06: It's adorable.
- 11:58SPEAKER_06: And of course, their socials are awesome too.
- 12:00SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: That they are.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Hey, well, that kind of leads us, you know, we were talking about air quality and mold spores and stuff like that.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: You know, air quality, it's like a silent game changer because again, you can't see it, right?
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's one of the biggest ones, and it was the number one on the first thing we talked about, poor air quality.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: So most homeowners don't even think about their air they're breathing.
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: No.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: But they should, right?
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: Inside your home, you've got dust, pet dander, chemicals from cleaners.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: We just talked about that, right?
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: Off gassing from materials.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Do you know what that is?
- 12:30SPEAKER_06: That's what the gas I do know the gases that like plastics and stuff omit into the air.
- 12:36SPEAKER_06: That is what our ozone, they get thinner and thinner.
- 12:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, see.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: See?
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Caitlin's on it because she watched a documentary this weekend.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: No, she knew that anyway.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: But no, but a lot of but a lot of people don't know.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: You took a sip of that.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, yeah.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Hey, so yeah, siping from the plastic cup.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: But no, the off-gassing for materials like engineered wood, like particle board, MDF, plywood, right?
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Memory foam mattresses.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: I'm so upset.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Carpets, paints, paints, pinosol sprays, and the cleaning supplies.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: They will off-gas, right?
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: Like that that vinegar you put in the tub and left overnight.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: It was off-gassing the stuff it was eating from the tub into your air quality that you can't see.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, I now you're like freaking like, oh my god.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: Really, you think, I mean.
- 13:29unknown: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: You can't escape it.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: No, you can't.
- 13:32SPEAKER_06: But you can help things.
- 13:33SPEAKER_06: You can.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: And but you know, here's the truth.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: If your home isn't sealed properly or ventilated right, that stuff just sits there.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 13:42SPEAKER_06: Uh the ventilation is serious, isn't it?
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: So here's some things that you can do.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: You know, like you you mentioned, upgrade your your heating and cooling filters, right?
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Consider a whole home air purification system.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: You can put those onto your your HVAC systems.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: So it is purifying that air as it's going back out into your home.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: It's some have UV lights that are killing, killing uh things as the air is passing through the UV lights, it's killing it.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: It's also going through filters.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 14:13SPEAKER_07: I like that.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: More like HEPA type filters.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: HEPA filters are like 99.9% catching all the dust that goes back out into the air.
- 14:21SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Um and then make sure your home is properly sealed.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: So here's the thing on that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: You know, this has been a long, long debated uh topic on how tight should you have your home from air outside air getting in.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: So a places like Tyvac and Kimberly Clark, those are other companies that do house wraps.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: Like a new home's built, you have the you see them putting this white house wrap or other colors of house wrap.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: That is actually a one-way barrier on the home.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: People don't realize that.
- 14:52SPEAKER_06: I I just thought it was like wrapping.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: So what it literally what it does it allows the home to breathe out, but moisture can air can't get in.
- 15:02SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 15:03SPEAKER_06: I mean, thank you.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: So it allows the home to breathe out through that, through that, that house wrap, that barrier.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: But air is can't air can't get in and moisture can't get in through it.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: So that's that type of thing.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: Very interesting.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: So that's one of the things that literally, as homes get built tighter, windows, as we talk about, get more energy efficient and they're tighter and you're not losing air from them.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: That some experts actually say that once a day you should open your window for like three to five minutes.
- 15:32SPEAKER_06: So that it doesn't get stale air.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Air transfer.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: It's it's changing of the air.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: It truly is, right?
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: And so that's that even if it's cold.
- 15:41SPEAKER_06: I mean, exactly.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: You do you you just gotta let that air transfer.
- 15:44SPEAKER_06: So that does make sense.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: In your newer homes, you have a you have a cold air return in every room of the house, right?
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: So you could shut a bedroom door, open a window, and let that air transfer in there because it will draw through the cold air return and help circulate the air in the home.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: But your older homes usually only have one cold air return in the middle of the house, so you really couldn't do that.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean that's a helpful tip.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just keep that in mind.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: So even if you don't have a tight home, that is something that you can do.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Because if your home is if your home is leaking air out, that means that air is coming in.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: That means those dust particles are coming in.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: That means if you're out in a farming area, which we're in rural mid-Illinois.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: We all are right.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: When they're spraying the fields, when they're putting chemicals on the field, that stuff is in the air.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 16:31SPEAKER_06: You know sometimes you can't help it.
- 16:33SPEAKER_06: You bring it in on your clothes.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: But that's why it's even more important for the air filters or making sure.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: The key thing is my home, so our kitchen faces the east and full windows on the east.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: So when that sun's coming up in the morning and you can see the sunbeams coming through, that's when you can see like dust particles in the air.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, I know what you mean.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: The dog comes in and shakes, pet dance everywhere.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Like you're like, ick, what are we doing here?
- 17:03SPEAKER_06: You're 100% in those sunbeams is when you can see it.
- 17:06SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: And that's about the only time you can see your air in your home.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: And air quoting for those not watching, right?
- 17:12SPEAKER_06: I'm glad you you you made a visual representation for that.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and so that's the thing, you can't see your air, but there are particles in it.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: And that's why having that upgrading your filters and the whole hair, whole home air purification systems, making sure your home is sealed properly.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Check attic insulation and airflow.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: So that's key too.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: So if you don't have a properly vented attic, you will actually have a superheated, even in the winter, your roof, your roof will take the heat and absorb it in, and your air temperature in your attic will be actually hotter than the house temperature down below.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: And so what happens is you have thermodynamics, air exchanging through thermodynamics.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: That's how we have storms.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Cold air drops, hot air rises, and when you have a cold front coming in, merging with hot air, that's what same thing in your home.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: You have storms in your home every day, you just don't know it.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: And that's a thermodynamic changes.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: See, Caitlin's, she's like, oh my God, this makes sense, right?
- 18:13SPEAKER_06: And it's just it's like in a plane, too.
- 18:15SPEAKER_06: Like a cabin pressure.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: Okay, this is all.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: Have you ever gone on a trip on a vacation for like a week?
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: No one's been in your home.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: And when you get home, you're like, it's just kind of the air's been locked in there all week, right?
- 18:30SPEAKER_06: Every time I come home, my house smells so good.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: It's stagnant.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, because it doesn't smell like kids running around?
- 18:35SPEAKER_06: That's what I'm like.
- 18:35SPEAKER_06: I'm like, oh my gosh, why can't it smell like this all the time?
- 18:39SPEAKER_06: That's the only time it smells good.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Because there's not dirty stinking sweaty, you know, all that stuff.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: No, I know what you mean because maybe it's just my house.
- 18:47SPEAKER_06: No, but when you go into like a that you haven't been, but maybe it's just I was excited.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: Or even like a hotel room.
- 18:53SPEAKER_06: A hotel room.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: And you can tell that it has not had anyone in it for a while.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: You've ever been there and you're like, ooh, it's kind of a musty smell.
- 18:59SPEAKER_06: No, the stank smell.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: Because the air's not moving in there.
- 19:03SPEAKER_06: My shed is like that, and it's and it's insulated, but probably not properly.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: And you want to make sure that, you know, to help help your air qualities, you want to make sure you use the bath fans and kitchen ventilations correctly.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Your range hoods and your your fart fans, as we call them, right?
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: Oh, I yeah.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: And people call them fart fans.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: All right, another educational point where you're coming from the construction trade industry.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: We call them fart fans in the trade, right?
- 19:25SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: People think they turn them on to take the fart smells out.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: No.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Actually, actually, the bath fans are actually designed to take the moisture out in the shower.
- 19:34SPEAKER_06: When you're in the shower.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: Just take the humidity out.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: That's what it's designed for.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: But I'm dead about the fart smells.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Stank sticks to moisture.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Take a fart in there with a hot shower, it's suck it right out.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: But you gotta have the fart.
- 19:48SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: You gotta have the fart fan on.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: So we call them fart fans, but they're actually moisture fans.
- 19:52SPEAKER_06: Well, I use the fart fan.
- 19:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, all the time.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: A lot of people turn them on when they go into the bathroom so that it covers up the farts.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: You hear the fan going and not the well, maybe they need to be a little quieter on their toots.
- 20:02SPEAKER_06: Or or put like the the sink on.
- 20:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, to run the water.
- 20:06SPEAKER_06: And get that moisture, the farts can connect to the water.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: So, but all of these things we just talked about, this is where construction meets wellness.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: Wellness of your home, which then ultimately helps the wellness of your health.
- 20:20SPEAKER_07: Of you, your family.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 20:22SPEAKER_03: Your your family.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: And moving into kind of we talked about the lighting, lighting and your body clock.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: It's it's people overlook the lighting.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: Lighting isn't just about seeing, it's about how your body functions.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: Your body runs on something called a circadian rhythm.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Yep, right.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: And that's your internal clock.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: And guess what controls it?
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: Light.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Light controls that.
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like a reset, right?
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: So if your home has poor natural light or harsh artificial lighting, like fluorescent bulbs, which is we've talked about this.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, before lighting, yeah.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Lighting.
- 20:58SPEAKER_06: It just It's too harsh and aggressive.
- 21:00SPEAKER_06: Natural light should be the first thing that you see in the morning.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: It should.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: It should.
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: Good morning, sunshine.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: And I'm not talking about the wife.
- 21:09SPEAKER_06: Oh, you're talking about Johnny.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: You you just did uh Johnny Depp's um Willy Wonka.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Good morning, sunshine.
- 21:17SPEAKER_06: Very good.
- 21:18SPEAKER_06: Shake.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: I just went into Jim Carrey the mask.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: Let me show you something.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, wait, no, that's uh Ace Ventura, pet detective.
- 21:27SPEAKER_06: No, no, no, that was the mask.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: That was the mask?
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: Let me show you something.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: No, it wasn't.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: That was fireman, that was fireman uh Bill from In Living Color when Jim Carrey was on there, fireman and oh, fireman ed.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: Okay, I haven't seen it.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: When I promise you one time you're on fire and you have to roll around and you're carrying a handful of thumbtacks.
- 21:49SPEAKER_06: Do you think that Jim Carrey's looking like Hellraiser?
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: What?
- 21:53SPEAKER_06: Do you think he's a clone?
- 21:54SPEAKER_06: That was really good.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Jim Carrey is a clone.
- 21:56SPEAKER_06: Did you not read on that?
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh my gosh.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: When we get you need to look it up.
- 22:01SPEAKER_06: They think he came to the Oscars.
- 22:04SPEAKER_06: He looks totally different, but yet still the same.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: People think he's been clowned.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Now he's a sheep.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: He's a sheeple.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:13SPEAKER_06: I'd be devastated.
- 22:14SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 22:15SPEAKER_06: Back to the lighting.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: Back to the lighting.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Your body clock and all that.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Sorry, folks.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: We're going to bring this back on track here.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Talking about the not dimension.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: Natural lighting, important.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Correct, right.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: And not and not the or the inconsistent lighting setups, right?
- 22:30SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: Um, it can actually affect your sleep quality, your focus, and like we talked about the other, your mood, being moody, right?
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Simple upgrades is add more natural light where possible, which if you can, you can.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: And I get it.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: A lot of people are using the blackout blinds now.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: I'm guilty of this.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: I have blackout blinds and I never open them.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Shame on me.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: I have rooms in my house.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: My game room.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: My blackout blinds, they close all the time.
- 22:58SPEAKER_06: Well, you're like my son.
- 23:00SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, I go in there to every kid's room in the morning.
- 23:04SPEAKER_06: They want to punch me in the face.
- 23:05SPEAKER_06: I say, good morning.
- 23:07SPEAKER_06: And I raise the blinds.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: Little frickin' Mary Poppins coming in.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: Because I know they have to go to school and I don't.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Ah, but you still have a J-O B that you have to R U in.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: It's okay.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, darn.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it happens.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: But hey, upgrade your outdated fixtures.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: Get rid of the fluorescent bulbs, that harsh lighting.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: Use warm lighting in the evenings.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Your soft.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: The dimmer.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: Well, your soft yellow lights, not your bright lights, like we have on you now to illuminate your face.
- 23:34SPEAKER_06: Well, and also when you're I feel like when you're working, like you have to be able to see really well.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 23:40SPEAKER_06: Or else you're straining your eyes.
- 23:41SPEAKER_06: That's another thing with lighting.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: If you're at work and age at home, yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_06: You need to be able to have a clear sight.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: Well, also using brighter, cooler lighting in workspaces.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: So having proper illumination where you're trying to work, again, your eyes aren't straining because you can see what you're doing and you're swinging, you're not trying to open your eyes and get more light in so you can see.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, for those not watching and listening, I just did a deer in a headlight pose for Caitlin.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Anyway, we've seen firsthand on lighting changes, you know, change the feel of a home instantly.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Just putting a new fixture up or changing the bulb to a soft white versus a daylight brightness.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: But you know, from the from the lighting segment and and making the home feel instantly better, moving into the moisture, mold, and airflow.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: See how airflow is kind of a common thread through today's theme?
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Because we all breathe it in.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: We need the air.
- 24:43SPEAKER_06: And I also feel like airflow is so important because I I know we already said it, but things will get ruined.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: Like for furniture, your furniture, your your dresser.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: For God's sakes, your dresser's I know.
- 24:57SPEAKER_06: I mean, you know, we talk about that.
- 25:00SPEAKER_06: I have this dresser from my, it was my grandparents, they got it for a wedding gift, okay?
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: So you can imagine how old that is.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: Did they bring it over on the Mayflower?
- 25:09SPEAKER_06: Maybe that, or I mean, who knows?
- 25:12SPEAKER_06: Maybe they were already here.
- 25:14SPEAKER_06: Actually, I think they were already here because my grandma had made it.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: Sorry, Grandma Borginis.
- 25:18SPEAKER_03: Grandma Dunn.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: All right, grandma done.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: Sorry, Grandma Dunn.
- 25:20SPEAKER_06: So uh R.I.P.
- 25:22SPEAKER_06: But that's what I'm saying.
- 25:23SPEAKER_06: Like you the airflow Well, it's a big one, right?
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just I don't want things to smell.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: What we run into all the time in the field is moisture control.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: Where's the moisture?
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: There's potential for mold where there's moisture.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: Bathrooms.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: And mold is not just a cosmetic issue, it's a health issue.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: We talk, we uh this it's through here, right?
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: We're talking about respiratory problems, allergies, long-term exposure risk.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: Again, it happens, right?
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: Common problem areas are your bathrooms without proper ventilation, without your fart fans going taking it out.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Attics with poor airflow, and that's why we didn't continue that conversation about if your attic doesn't have the proper ventilation, ridge vent is your proper your best ventilation on that because it's the peak of the roof, and your roof is like a chimney.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: Draws air in through the eaves and it goes out through the through the peak of the house.
- 26:12SPEAKER_06: So if it's too tight, as in you don't have ventilation, right?
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: That heat sits up there and bakes, which shortens the life of your shingles.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: You can actually bake the wood.
- 26:24SPEAKER_06: Well, that's what I was just gonna be like starting a it can become brittle.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: You know, it really brittle.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: I said that brittle on my English does very brittle of you.
- 26:34SPEAKER_06: I do, I think I might have some of that problem over part of it.
- 26:38SPEAKER_06: No, but uh for ventilation for my attic.
- 26:41SPEAKER_06: Like, yeah, see, I learned so much about this because we do have a fart fan, but I know that it doesn't work correctly.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Something is not ventilated out of there.
- 26:51SPEAKER_06: I don't think it's a lot of things.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: It may just be going to the attic, which means you're putting that moisture up there.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: So here we had a client.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: It wasn't we had a client call us after they had an issue and know it wasn't elite professional that did the roof, but a fly by night company came in, the client was desperate to have the roof done, had it done, and they removed the chimney below the roof line because they're like, Oh, the homer's like, yeah, we're not using the chimney.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: They removed the chimney below the roof line, they didn't cap it, do anything like that.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: That chimney had their water heater venting through that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Their gas water heater was venting through that chimney, and their whole attic was filled with the carbon monoxide, and gas burns moist, and all that moisture, their attic was filled with mold and mildew.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Filled.
- 27:40SPEAKER_06: How did they discover it?
- 27:41SPEAKER_06: Like what was going on to their kids were getting sick.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: Literally, their kids were getting sick on the second floor.
- 27:47SPEAKER_06: But the carbon monoxide, I mean, this is that is really upsetting.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: And so we had to come in and one, we immediately capped the chimney with a flue pipe up through the roof so that the water heat.
- 27:58SPEAKER_06: Even I would know.
- 27:59unknown: Yeah.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: To cap it the homeowner, so again, the homeowners didn't have to be a little bit more than a lot of things.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: No, no, they didn't know they didn't know that he could do it correctly.
- 28:08SPEAKER_06: That's what I'm saying.
- 28:09SPEAKER_06: That's just sad.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: And all he all the homeowner was thinking is like, oh yeah, that chimney's a pain.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: It's leaked over the years.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's get rid of it.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, take it below the roof line.
- 28:17SPEAKER_03: Which for the the roofing company that was there, which fly by night guys, well, it's easier for them to knock down the and just fill it in, right?
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: They don't have to flash around it.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: So any and they charge the client more because they took the chimney out, right?
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: Call sheriff Ryan Dixon.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: But see, there's no, he's not sheriff yet.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: But then they do serve elect.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: But but they didn't, he's not sheriff elect either.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: He's a Republican nominee from sheriff.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Just let's get this straight.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: I just want to make sure that we're not putting false advertising.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Okay, you're right, you're right, you're right, you're right, you're right.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: So anyway, but that company, you can't get, you know, it's you can't call them back because you don't want to get a hold of them, right?
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: And no one's gonna be able to get it.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Well, when they're those ones, yeah, and no one's getting their certificate of insurance to be able to call the insurance company, hey, you need to come pay for my home and get fixed, right?
- 28:57SPEAKER_06: I mean, that could have ended up really bad, Chris.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: Really bad.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: So with that, ventilating of that attic is very key because if you have that superheated air up there, it does make your living area work harder for that.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: So insulation to create the barrier between the attic and the living space, and then your proper ventilation up there.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: So that is where it is key.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: So if you're if you're actively seeing mold on your ceiling, guys, it's probably time that you would need to call somebody.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Well, so that's a key.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: I'm glad you brought that up because there are homes that they'll have they'll have mildew starting to show on the corners of their ceiling and wall, which is at the exterior of their house, which is a a key to say that there's not enough insulation in that attic because the inside temperature is condensating at that drywall level at the ceiling from the cold air that's coming into their attic.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: And so as the heat rises, hits that drywall, and gets cold on the other side, it condensates.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: And when it's condensating, mold needs food, drywall is food, and then it mildews.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: So that's a sign that you're like, hey, that's not properly insulated.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: We need to look into that, right?
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Okay, and then you can clean that mold.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: A lot of people don't understand this.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: It's real simple to be able to clean mold.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Real simple.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Mold needs three things.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Bleach.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Mold needs three things to live.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: It needs lack of light, so dark areas, needs a food source, wood, apply uh a drywall, paper products, that's food, right?
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: And then it needs moisture, right?
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: Any flow of moisture, it could be humidity, it could be a leak, anything like that.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: If you eliminate any one of those three things, mold can't grow.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: Mold spores are everywhere.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: But what if you clean it?
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Here's the real easiest thing to clean it.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: It literally is a 10 to 1 ratio.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: 10 parts water, one part bleach.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: So you can do 10 ounces of water, one ounce of bleach.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: That's all the solution you need.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: People come in there like, oh, I'm just gonna put 100% bleach in there.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: One, you're gonna kill your nostrils, you're gonna hurt your lungs by doing that.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: You're gonna burn your eyes if you get it on you.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: Ruin your glasses, clothes, your hands, whatever, right?
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: 10 to 1 ratio, wipe the area clean, clean it up, maybe multiple times if it's really, really heavily caked with that, and you eliminate one of those three items, your mold will not come back.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: So that's very key on that.
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: People think, oh, we gotta have our home eradicated and all this stuff, and you know, all this.
- 31:23SPEAKER_06: No, I mean, I mean, I think that's kind of a normal thing that you would have to take care of maintenance.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 31:31SPEAKER_06: Just like you put chills on your ceiling.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: So which you learned about putting kills up there to stop the stains from coming through.
- 31:37SPEAKER_06: Right, right, right, right.
- 31:38SPEAKER_06: So, see, and learn so much.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Yep, yep, yep, yep.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: So the moisture and mold and stopping that the poor airflow around your windows and doors, even, right?
- 31:46SPEAKER_07: Mm-hmm.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Give us a skull here, we'll take care of that for you.
- 31:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: Uh so here's what you as the homeowner should do, right?
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Make sure your bath fans are vented properly, meaning they are vented out to the outdoor space and not just blown into the attic.
- 31:58SPEAKER_06: That's exactly what mine's doing, Chris.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: So it's blowing right into the attic.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: That means you're pumping all that hot moist air into the attic.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Even in the summer, you're taking showers.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: You got the fart fan on, you're throwing the moisture up in the attic with the hot heat of the summer, it's just baking up there.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: Ew.
- 32:14SPEAKER_05: It is probably full of.
- 32:16SPEAKER_05: Oh, I've got to call him.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Chris, get up in the attic and take a look at that.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: And I mean Chris Trader, not this Chris.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: No, I was gonna say it's you, it's both Chris's.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Hey, check, check for condensation on your windows.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: We talked about this in previous episodes, right?
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: If you have high condensation levels, moisture levels on your windows, that means you have a high humidity level in your home and you have poor quality windows, creating that condensation issue.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: And that condensation then is adding more moisture into the home.
- 32:41SPEAKER_06: So, what do you think about like dehumidifiers in the basement?
- 32:44SPEAKER_06: Do you feel like that that's a band-aid or important to have?
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: No, it's important to have it.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Don't put a dehumidifier in the basement if you have a leak.
- 32:53SPEAKER_06: Right, right, right.
- 32:54SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: But do you think a lot of primitive basements, I guess you would say?
- 33:00SPEAKER_06: Like mine's just kind of like it's not rebuilt.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: Because you got a partial and partial.
- 33:05SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 33:05SPEAKER_06: You have to do that.
- 33:06SPEAKER_06: Do you think that's like normal to have to have to have that down there?
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: So dehumidify in a basement is good because again, moisture rises, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: That means if it's in the basement, the moisture will work its way up into the first floor, second floor, how many floors you have.
- 33:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: So if you can stop the moisture level at the basement level, yes, it's it's a good thing to do.
- 33:24SPEAKER_06: That always helps air quality.
- 33:25SPEAKER_06: Correct.
- 33:25SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: So just like here at our studios, we're in the lower level of the of the big dog showroom, we have a dehumidifier.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Dr.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Pepper.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Did you canalize the Dr.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Pepper?
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: That was Candle Burking, by the way.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Anyway, we do have a dehumidifier that is set up to, and we've got it set, I think, at like 40% humidity level.
- 33:46SPEAKER_06: I think that's what mine is, too.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: So in the winter, it doesn't run at all.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: And I did notice when we got our first spike of of warmer temperatures, I heard it kick on.
- 33:54SPEAKER_06: Oh, yours is it's auto.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just, and it's it's drained right into uh it's a drain line, so I don't have to touch it.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Boom, let it go.
- 34:01SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: So because if not, what happens is in those that's nice, most lower levels, there's not as much natural light, which means you're gonna have the lack of light.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there's tons of food source, which is your drywalls, your flooring, your rugs, your pool tables, your whatever's in the in the lower level, right?
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: And things you store.
- 34:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: So I I will share this.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: It's I don't know, kind of scary, a little embarrassing, but when we were going through the remodeling process here at the showroom, again, we're in a 2,500 square foot home that was completely gutted and remodeled, right?
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: We did all the first floor stuff before we came to the lower level.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: The lower level did have it was all paneling down here.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: You probably remember that.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: I do, I do.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: All paneling, right?
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, I and yeah, and so it got really hot and humid, you know, in the summer, blah, blah, blah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: I came down to check for something, and it was just white mildew everywhere.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: Everywhere.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: The paneling was mildewed spots everywhere.
- 34:55SPEAKER_06: I'm like, Yeah, is so bad.
- 34:59SPEAKER_06: And look at it now.
- 35:00SPEAKER_06: And that's another thing I want to say.
- 35:02SPEAKER_06: Like, you walk in here, there's never like a funk.
- 35:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's never any like smell.
- 35:09SPEAKER_06: It smells fresh.
- 35:10SPEAKER_06: Do you know what I'm saying?
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: Like smell of success.
- 35:12SPEAKER_06: And it is, and down here you can tell.
- 35:14SPEAKER_06: I just you are right when you can tell.
- 35:17SPEAKER_06: And if somebody has too much humidity in their house, it is you can cut it with a knife.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: And the insulation, right?
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: They say you can wear the air.
- 35:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: But yeah, there was no insulation in between the paneling and the mason, the block wall.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: And so what you have is you have a supercell of condensing point there, condensation point of hot and cold.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: So now this whole this whole lower level has been spray foamed behind the drywall.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: So we are locked in almost like a cooler.
- 35:46SPEAKER_06: Locked and loaded, man.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: Locked and loaded.
- 35:49SPEAKER_06: Big dog style.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Bang! That's right.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Um that last thing is invest in proper insulation.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: And this is where doing it right the first time or fixing it correctly matters for that wellness of your home.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: You know, and that kind of leads us into the temperature and comfort equals wellness.
- 36:09SPEAKER_04: So too.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: So all right, let me ask you something.
- 36:12SPEAKER_04: Oh, I can't wait.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: Have you ever been in the house where one room is freezing and another one's hot?
- 36:20SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: Is your home that way now?
- 36:22SPEAKER_06: So there's two rooms and it's weird.
- 36:25SPEAKER_06: They're like I have this long hallway, the cow's room here, and then my room, they're either always warmer or colder, you know, depending on type of the season.
- 36:36SPEAKER_06: But I have I discovered this, Chris, and this is proof to all you guys.
- 36:40SPEAKER_06: I have no insulation in my closet that faces outside.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: In a mill dude?
- 36:46SPEAKER_06: In the corners.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:48SPEAKER_06: Even on my carpet, my boots, my cowgirl boots.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, shang.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 36:53SPEAKER_06: So I've got several years ago, but still I just make sure I really watch that now and I don't put anything in those corners of that.
- 37:02SPEAKER_06: But that never just knew, realized that the mold would come from lack of insulation.
- 37:09SPEAKER_06: You know what I'm saying?
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: We just educated Catholic Borgini trader today.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: It's all, it's all just and it's all I guess it makes it just seems like common sense to me because I'm in the trades.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: And I have been my whole life, right?
- 37:22SPEAKER_06: I'll this is like age or two, I was on a roof and diapers.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I understand.
- 37:27SPEAKER_06: You know, I I just I like that we're that we're learning about this, but no, I know.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: So with that one room freezing, the one room hot, you're constantly adjusting that thermostat, right?
- 37:36SPEAKER_04: Always.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: You know, and it's just it's just not just uncomfortable.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: That's stress on your body and on your home, right?
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: And your well-being, your psyche.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, your pocketbook, right?
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: A well-designed home should have consistent temperatures throughout the home.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: Proper insulation, energy efficient windows, balanced air flow.
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: Ventilation, yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: So where the upgrades could be in your home and existing home would be the new windows, better insulation, um, and HVAC improvements.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: I would highly recommend if you're getting the new HVAC system, you need to get a constant airflow system.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: And they call them a two-stage.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: What that means is your air handler is constantly moving air in the home.
- 38:22SPEAKER_06: See, I like that.
- 38:23SPEAKER_06: I think that's why I would always keep my fan on because that's what I was trying to think with.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: Now you don't have to, right?
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: Because you don't have to, because you know, because it does that.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: When people put it on auto, the auto means that the fan will come on automatically as the temperature is needed, right?
- 38:38SPEAKER_06: Right, right, right.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: And so a a two-stage or a constant airflow system, it's constantly moving air through the home slowly.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: And when the when the thermostat calls for cool or heat, it then ramps up the airflow to push that temperature change through the home.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: And that means the air is already moving.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: It's not stagnant in that corner or that corner or the room stagnant.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: And I like the air is constantly moving.
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: And that helps on air quality as well, right?
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: Coming back to that point.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: Boy, that's nice.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: I want that now.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: And you you save money.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: People are like, well, I don't want my fan running all the time.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: But actually, you're saving money because here's why.
- 39:18SPEAKER_06: I know.
- 39:18SPEAKER_06: I believe this.
- 39:20SPEAKER_06: It's because then it doesn't, it's it's like starting your car.
- 39:23SPEAKER_03: You know, if you're if you're I mean the auto start that they have on cars now or the auto stop.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_06: You're like, if you're turning your wheel and you're like ignition starting, that's taking up more energy than if you're just coasting.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 39:34SPEAKER_06: Right?
- 39:35SPEAKER_06: So that's how I think of it as you're spot on.
- 39:38SPEAKER_06: Has to start up every time and work hard to get back down to this, but if it keeps it slow this whole time, it's hey, it's a turtle.
- 39:45SPEAKER_06: It's a tortoise.
- 39:46SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 39:46SPEAKER_06: So aren't you proud of me?
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: I am you know what?
- 39:50SPEAKER_06: My first marriage, okay?
- 39:51SPEAKER_06: I tried to say this.
- 39:52SPEAKER_06: So many times.
- 39:55SPEAKER_03: She's head bobbing here.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: Man, if you're not seeing it, she is head bobbing, hair flying.
- 39:59SPEAKER_06: And I mean all through my face because I had said this because I swear to you.
- 40:04SPEAKER_06: Amarin sometimes will give you little things of like helpful tips to say my energy.
- 40:10SPEAKER_06: Like in your mail or whatever.
- 40:11SPEAKER_06: And it had said this.
- 40:13SPEAKER_06: Of course I didn't save it.
- 40:14SPEAKER_06: So then when I'm telling this to the first, you know that guy.
- 40:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:18SPEAKER_06: You know, never would believe me, never believe believe me.
- 40:21SPEAKER_06: Now we have Chris Hartsuk officially saying it.
- 40:25SPEAKER_06: We're gonna record this sentence in the mail.
- 40:27SPEAKER_06: That's right, you were wrong.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: Yep, yeah, exactly.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but the other thing it does too is your furnace doesn't have to work as hard, not just the air moving, yeah, yeah, is because you're keeping a more constant air temperature throughout the home.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: So your furnace will not have to produce heat or cold as long because the air is there.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: It already has it.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: As opposed to when it shuts off, no air moving, and then the temperature drops throughout the whole home, right?
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: Especially around the thermostat, which then triggers going, oh, we're getting cold.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: So now the whole home has to now get heated way back up.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
- 41:05SPEAKER_03: That's why they say radiant systems are the best, like the old radiator boiler systems, which are still out there.
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: Because a radiator is radiating out heat and it is bringing the temperature of everything up, the furniture and everything else is radiating and absorbing that versus versus changing the air temperature, which an air handler system does.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: We could do a whole episode on that.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: And we may, we may bring in some HVAC experts and have have conversations like that.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: So I love that because like it's temperature is very important.
- 41:34SPEAKER_06: I mean, it is.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: Because temperature and comfort equal wellness.
- 41:40SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Mind blown.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:42SPEAKER_06: Mind blowing.
- 41:43SPEAKER_06: And you know, guys, you want to sleep at a little bit cooler temperature.
- 41:48SPEAKER_06: That's good for your wellness.
- 41:49SPEAKER_06: You're welcome.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: So here we're going to kind of wind this up a little bit then.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: So small changes equal big impacts, right?
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: So here's the good news.
- 41:57SPEAKER_03: You don't have to gut your house to improve your health, right?
- 42:00SPEAKER_03: Health of you andor your home.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: Start small, upgrade your air filters.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: We've said it several times in this podcast episode, right?
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: Add a dehumidifier if needed, which, if you have a basement area, I would highly recommend doing a dehumidifier.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: But just make sure that you either empty the container if you don't have it set up for an auto drain, or just keep an eye on it, right?
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: Improve lighting in key areas.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: Inexpensive way to make that happen.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: Expensive.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: Seal drafts around windows and doors.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Even if you're not buying new windows and doors at the time, seal up the drafts that you have around there.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: Call us.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: We'll come out and do a wellness check of your home.
- 42:35SPEAKER_03: We'll give you, we'll give you an update.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: I love the wellness check of the home.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Dr.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Chris, we'll come to the little drops.
- 42:41SPEAKER_06: And look, you kind of have your doctor jacket on.
- 42:43SPEAKER_06: Oh my God.
- 42:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: Anyway.
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: Oh, those pens.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I do it.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: You know.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Keep your HVAC system well maintained.
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 42:53SPEAKER_03: Very important.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Have it serviced or check the air filters.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, I've, oh my gosh.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I'm telling myself or not.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: I I was embarrassed, like really bad.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: You know, I work all the time.
- 43:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: Furnace system home wasn't working properly.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: I'm like, what the heck?
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: Gosh dang it.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just it's not working right.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: There's one more thing.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: I call, I called, I schedule, hey guys, come out, check the system.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just not working right.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: They sent me a picture.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: I didn't change my air filter for quite some time.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: My furnace filter.
- 43:26SPEAKER_03: And it was so clogged.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Yes, we have indoor pets.
- 43:31SPEAKER_03: It was so clogged that it was starving the system for air.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: And it actually had like sucked it in, like to the duct area towards the blower.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: It was so bad.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: I was so embarrassed.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: So that's why it's now in my calendar to check it and change it all the time.
- 43:46SPEAKER_06: Chris, don't even feel bad.
- 43:48SPEAKER_06: Same thing happened to me.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 43:50SPEAKER_06: And I was like, oh my God.
- 43:52SPEAKER_06: So then, because that was like kind of right when I had, you know, kind of been on my own.
- 43:56SPEAKER_06: And then after I guess Donnie didn't think about it, but
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: But the the It was full of KDB here, wasn't it?
- 44:04SPEAKER_06: It was so bad.
- 44:05SPEAKER_06: But I think it's probably happened to everybody when you don't think about so like you said.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: That's what was so and I had to call the trade trades gaps, hey come up, my friend said working right.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: I was I was really in.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Did you laugh?
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was embarrassed.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: I'm so sorry.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: I was I was embarrassed, like embarrassed.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: And of course he left it there for me to see when I got home.
- 44:24unknown: Yeah.
- 44:25SPEAKER_03: But you know, small steps do lead to those big results over time.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: You know, that's again, we always talk about that.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Things you can do to make that happen, right?
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: So, but here's when know when to DIY it, do it yourself, or when to call a pro.
- 44:39SPEAKER_03: So let's bring it back to something we talk about a lot on the show, knowing when and not to do the DIY and pro stuff, right?
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: The DI fry, DI fry?
- 44:48SPEAKER_04: DI fry.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: DIY friendly things.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: You can tell it's getting lunchtime.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Is right.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: DIY friendly things, items on that list is change the filters.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: You can do it.
- 44:58SPEAKER_06: You can change the filters.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: If you don't, have your service tech come out, have him show you how to do it.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Say, hey, I like I want to be self- self-sufficient and do this myself.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: Self-efficient, sufficient?
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, something like that.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Anyway, it don't matter.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: You may have to call him for a partial service call or whatever.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: But once you do that, you'll know it from there on.
- 45:15SPEAKER_06: You can change your own light bulbs.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, change your own light bulb, sealing the small air leaks around, like we talked about, whether it's a can of spray foam or a tube of of sealant, you know, use your little flick and flame.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was like on a windy day, where's the flames coming in?
- 45:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: We got some airflow coming into that sink.
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: So basic maintenance, but you want to call the professional when you suspect mold or see mold.
- 45:40SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 45:41SPEAKER_06: Or anything I feel like involved with the attic.
- 45:43SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 45:44SPEAKER_06: Especially after the stories we've you've shared this time.
- 45:47SPEAKER_06: Like I think that should really be.
- 45:49SPEAKER_06: I think people don't think the attic is that integral to the health of your attic.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: I don't have anything up there.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: Just let it go.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it is part of your home, right?
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: So uh if you have major airflow issues, contact a professional.
- 46:06SPEAKER_06: Professional, right?
- 46:07SPEAKER_03: If you're upgrading insulation, same thing.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: So here's what a lot of people will we'll segue just a little bit on this.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: Um our sidetrack.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: The people think, well, my home's built, I got drywall inside, I got siding outside.
- 46:18SPEAKER_03: I can't upgrade the insulation of my walls.
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: You can.
- 46:21SPEAKER_03: You can.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: We literally can come in if your home has vinyl siding.
- 46:24SPEAKER_03: We've removed vinyl siding before, drilled holes in your outside of your wall into each stud cavity, and we can fill those with blown insulation.
- 46:32SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: We can do that.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: And then put the side, we plug the holes.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: We plug the holes and we put the siding right back on.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: Boy, that spray insulation's really become well the spray foam, yeah, that that can be done too.
- 46:45SPEAKER_03: Uh a little bit more, you have to be a little bit more careful of that because if the outlets inside your home, the electrical boxes aren't sealed, you will fill them full of foam.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you'll know real quick.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: We actually years and years ago, we had a uh company, insulation company, come in.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: We had an older home, and they were drilling and doing the blown cellulose in all the cavities.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: And one cavity they just kept pumping and pumping and pumping, and we're like, We don't know what we're filling, but something's filling up.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: And we went in the home and it was actually a pocket door cavity, and the pocket door cavity was now filled up to where the door wouldn't close, and it was blowing out into the home, and it was a mess.
- 47:29SPEAKER_03: So preparation by the professional working with the homeowner to make sure there isn't anything like that in there that could get filled up in a vertical.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, wow, that's a mess.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: So also another one thing to call a pro is replacing your windows and/or your HVAC system.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: And again, those HVAC systems, check out what's out there now if you get that constant airflow, right?
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: Because doing it wrong can cost you more and impact your health.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: So that's when you want to call a not worth it.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: No, no, it's not.
