- 0:04stories we forget. There are moments that changed
- 0:07a nation, changed a church, changed a generation.
- 0:12And sometimes, the most fascinating stories are
- 0:15the ones we never learned. Welcome to Voices
- 0:18of Life. Did you know series? A journey through
- 0:22history, where remarkable people, extraordinary
- 0:24events, faith, freedom, courage, sacrifice, and
- 0:29even the unexpected, come together. From the
- 0:33pages of American history, to the story of the
- 0:36church, from famous names, to people whose names
- 0:41have nearly been forgotten. Every episode asks
- 0:44a simple question. Did you know? Your host. Welcome
- 0:53to the Voices of Life, a ministry of the Church
- 0:56for Life. I'm Pastor David. Today we're in the
- 0:59Did You Know series, and today we're stepping
- 1:02into the stories behind October 13th and 14th.
- 1:05Two days filled with moments that shaped America's
- 1:07identity, its faith, its freedoms, and its future.
- 1:12Across two days, we see the birth of the United
- 1:14States Navy, the laying of the White House cornerstone,
- 1:18the voices of Indian believers in colonial Massachusetts,
- 1:24and the spiritual turning point of Theodore Beza.
- 1:29We will see the First Continental Congress declare
- 1:31the rights of the colonies. William Penn born
- 1:35into a life that would champion religious liberty.
- 1:38And Wesley Brothers sailing toward mission that
- 1:42would spark a movement. And Alexander Duff beginning
- 1:46a journey that would reshape Christian education
- 1:49in India. These stories remind us that history
- 1:52is not just dates and events, it's people, convictions,
- 1:56courage, and conscience. And every moment we
- 2:00explore today helps us understand how faith and
- 2:03freedom have woven themselves into the American
- 2:07story. Let's begin. Did you know that on October
- 2:1113, 1775, the Continental Congress created what
- 2:16would become the United States Navy? The colonies
- 2:19were already fighting British troops on land,
- 2:21but the British Royal Navy controlled the seas.
- 2:24Congress knew they needed ships capable of intercepting
- 2:28British transports, carrying weapons and supplies.
- 2:31So they authorized two armed vessels, swift,
- 2:35lightly armed, and crewed by 80 men, to disrupt
- 2:39the British supply lines. This small beginning
- 2:42became the foundation of the American naval power,
- 2:47and today, October 13th, is celebrated as that
- 2:51official birthday of the United States Navy.
- 2:55Did you know that on October 13th, 1792, the
- 2:59cornerstone of the White House was laid? The
- 3:02new nation was building its permanent capital.
- 3:06James Hoban's design was chosen. A brass plate
- 3:09was placed beneath the stone. And Freemasons
- 3:13led the ceremony. But George Washington, the
- 3:17man who selected the site, did not attend. He
- 3:20stayed in Philadelphia. This moment marked the
- 3:24beginning of the physical construction of the
- 3:27most recognizable executive residence in the
- 3:30world. We move on to John Eliot and the Praying
- 3:35Indians. Did you know that on October 13, 1652,
- 3:40Indians that had converted to Christianity in
- 3:44Massachusetts presented their testimonies and
- 3:47confessions of faith? Their pastor was John Eliot,
- 3:50a Puritan minister who learned the Alcuin language
- 3:54so he could preach to the people in their own
- 3:57tongue. He translated scripture, established
- 4:00praying Indian towns, and helped the Indians'
- 4:04believers form their own congregations. This
- 4:08is a story of inspiration and tragic. During
- 4:13King Philip's War, many of the Indians were displaced,
- 4:17attacked, or distrusted by both sides. Moving
- 4:22on to Theodore Bez's turning point. So did you
- 4:26know on October 13, 1548, marks a spiritual turning
- 4:29point for Theodore Beza, a brilliant French scholar,
- 4:33a poet, and a man living between two worlds,
- 4:36Protestant conviction and Catholic income. A
- 4:40sudden illness forced him to confront his conscience.
- 4:43His recovery became the moment he openly embraced
- 4:46the Reformed faith, eventually becoming John
- 4:50Calvin's successor in Geneva. His influence shaped
- 4:55Protestant theology for generations. So did you
- 4:59know that on October 14, 1774, the First Continental
- 5:04Congress adopted the Declaration and Resolves?
- 5:08This was the First Continental Congress asserting
- 5:11its colonial rights. Delegates from 12 colonies
- 5:15gathered in Philadelphia, changing British taxation,
- 5:18governance, and justice. They declared that the
- 5:21colonists' possessed rights the British government
- 5:24could not ignore. This was not yet independence,
- 5:28but it was the constitutional foundation that
- 5:32made independence possible. So did you know that
- 5:37William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was born
- 5:40on October 14, 1644? Penn became Quaker, was
- 5:45imprisoned for his belief, and eventually founded
- 5:49a colony built on conscience and religious freedom.
- 5:52He called it a holy experiment. Pennsylvania
- 5:56became one of the most religiously diverse colonies
- 5:59in America, a refuge for those seeking freedom
- 6:02of worship. Did you know that on October 14,
- 6:081735, John and Charles Wesley set sail for Georgia?
- 6:12Their disciplined faith at Oxford earned the
- 6:16name Methodist. On the voyage, John Wesley encountered
- 6:20Moravian Christians, whose calm during storm
- 6:24deeply affected him. His time in Georgia was
- 6:29difficult, but it prepared him for the spiritual
- 6:31awakening that followed in 1738. Their journey
- 6:35became an early chapter in a movement that transformed
- 6:38Protestant Christianity. Did you know that on
- 6:42October 14, 1829, Alexander Duff sailed for India?
- 6:47He survived two shipwrecks, lost nearly all his
- 6:51possessions, yet pressed forward to establish
- 6:54schools that combined academic education with
- 6:57Christian teachings. His work shaped English
- 7:00language education in India for generations.
- 7:03Duff's mission showed how education became a
- 7:07powerful tool in the 19th century Christian outreach.
- 7:12Did you know that the colonial America contained
- 7:15both champions of religious liberty and harsh
- 7:19persecutors of religious dissent? William Penn
- 7:22built a colony on conscience and freedom, but
- 7:25in Massachusetts, beginning in 1656, Quakers
- 7:29were imprisoned, beaten, banished, and four were
- 7:33executed, including Mary Dyer. These two stories,
- 7:38Penn's holy experiment in Massachusetts persecution,
- 7:41show that America's path to religious liberty
- 7:44was not straightforward, but it was shaped by
- 7:48both courage and contradiction. As we close today's
- 7:52Did You Know episode, I want you to carry one
- 8:00truth with you. History speaks, and when we listen
- 8:05carefully, it teaches us how nations rise, how
- 8:09faith endures, and how conscience shapes the
- 8:11future. From the Navy's first vessels, to the
- 8:15cornerstone of the White House, to the Christian
- 8:18Indians believing and seeking a place to worship
- 8:22to william penn's holy experiment to wesley brothers
- 8:26and alexander dust stepping into missions that
- 8:30would echo for generations each story reminds
- 8:33us that god works through people through choices
- 8:37through moments that often seem small at the
- 8:41time but they have a greater effect over time
- 8:44so as you step away from today's episode Let
- 8:48these stories strengthen your understanding,
- 8:50deepen your appreciation for the past, and inspire
- 8:53you to walk faithfully in the present. Because
- 8:56today's present is tomorrow's past. This is Pastor
- 9:01David, and this has been Voices of Life, a ministry
- 9:05of the Church for Life. Grace and peace to you,
- 9:07and may the Lord guide you, and as you live your
- 9:11life, do it in His purpose, with your own moment
- 9:15in history. And that concludes this edition of
- 9:19Voices of Life. Did you know? History gives us
- 9:23more than dates and names. It gives us stories.
- 9:27Stories of courage and failure. Faith and doubt.
- 9:31Freedom and sacrifice. And people who face moments
- 9:34that change the course of history. But history
- 9:38isn't just about what happened then. It's about
- 9:40what we can learn from it now. Thank you for
- 9:43joining Pastor David in Voices of Life. Until
- 9:46our next journey through history. Keep asking
- 9:49questions. Keep learning. And remember, you never
- 9:54know what you might discover when you simply
- 9:56ask. Did you know? This is Voices of Life. Until
- 10:02next time.
