- 0:00Take your only offensive weapon, the Sword of the Spirit, and
- 0:05turn with me to the Book of Matthew.
- 0:08Say, wait a minute, I thought we're in the Book of John.
- 0:10We are. But I'm going to introduce to
- 0:14you John one one to five by taking you to the Wednesday of
- 0:20Passion Week. Last week we introduced to you
- 0:24John 1 by taking you to Monday of Passion Week, because Monday
- 0:29was a day of recognition. Monday was a day of coronation.
- 0:35It was a day of the triumphal entry in which our Lord wrote
- 0:38into Jerusalem. It was also a day of compassion,
- 0:41for there he he wept over the city.
- 0:45The next day, Tuesday, would be a day of indignation in which he
- 0:50would come and he would curse the fig tree and he would
- 0:52cleanse the temple. But on Wednesday, Wednesday was
- 0:57a day of instruction. Wednesday was a day of
- 1:01confrontation. Wednesday was a day of
- 1:05questions. You see, by the time you come to
- 1:10Wednesday, the religious leaders, their animosity had
- 1:15grown to such a high level, they could no longer stand even the
- 1:21the sight of Jesus, let alone the name of Jesus.
- 1:27We shared with you last week that in John chapter 12, they
- 1:30were so angry with one another because they were unable to keep
- 1:34people from following Jesus. That had been their mission for
- 1:39a few years now. But now you come to Wednesday of
- 1:45of Passion week and they are furious with what is happening
- 1:50with the Lord. After all, the day earlier he
- 1:53came and, and cleanse the temple, their holy place.
- 1:58And so they were thinking of ways to trap him, thinking of
- 2:02ways in which they could, they could draw the people away from
- 2:07the Lord. And so the Herodians gathered
- 2:10together, the Sadducees gathered together and the the Pharisees
- 2:13gathered together to formulate questions to stump Jesus.
- 2:21So the Herodians come first and they they ask a question that
- 2:26deals with things politically. Then the Sadducees come and they
- 2:32ask a question dealing with things theologically.
- 2:36And then the Pharisees come and they ask a question dealing with
- 2:40things spiritually. And of course Christ answers
- 2:44them all perfectly. They are dumbfounded.
- 2:48But then you come to a place where the Lord is going to turn
- 2:52the tables on the religious establishment.
- 2:56He's now going to ask them a question, and the question he
- 3:02asks is the only question that matters.
- 3:07The question he asks is the most important question ever asks of
- 3:13man. He knows that.
- 3:16And so he's going to ask them a particular question.
- 3:23And in giving the question, it's almost as if it's a, a final
- 3:27message, a a final invitation to them.
- 3:33Because within the realm of the question and within the realm of
- 3:36the answer to the question is the answer to their eternal
- 3:40destiny. And so he is going to ask them a
- 3:44question in terms of a final message, a final invitation to
- 3:50all those who are as rejecters. They might somehow come to a
- 3:55place of redemption. So you find this question in
- 4:01Matthew's Gospel, the 22nd chapter, the 41st verse.
- 4:08It says now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus
- 4:11asked them a question. Now this is the the final
- 4:18question. This is the last question that
- 4:21he asks and there will be no more questions asked of Jesus
- 4:27after this one. So this is the last question of
- 4:31his earthly ministry. He's asking it, but no one, as
- 4:36we'll see in a few moments, will dare to ask him any more
- 4:40questions. So he has them together and he
- 4:45says, What do you think about the Christ?
- 4:50Whose Son is he? That question is the only
- 4:57question that matters, for how you answer that question will
- 5:01determine your eternal destiny. You get it wrong, your soul will
- 5:06be damned forever. You get it right, your soul will
- 5:11be in glory forever. So it's important that you get
- 5:16the answer right. The question is, whose Son is
- 5:25the Christ? In other words, who is the
- 5:30Christ? Who is the Messiah?
- 5:34That's the question. And you will note the answer
- 5:38comes rapidly. It comes quickly because you
- 5:44see, the religious establishment want to let the people in the
- 5:48crowd know that they are smart, that they know the answer to
- 5:54Jesus's question. He knew the answer to their
- 5:58questions. They want to say that they're on
- 6:01equal par with Jesus and they can answer just as quickly and
- 6:06as rapidly as he did. So it says they said to him,
- 6:16David's, that's right, that's correct.
- 6:21That would be a right answer. It would be an incomplete
- 6:25answer. It would be a deficient answer,
- 6:30but yet it would be a correct answer because the Messiah would
- 6:37be the Son of David. That's true in the Old Testament
- 6:45taught that over and over again. Second Samuel Chapter 7, Psalm
- 6:5389, Amos Chapter 9, and the list goes on and on and on that the
- 7:00Messiah would be the Son of David.
- 7:06They are willing to recognize the humanity of the Messiah, but
- 7:11not recognize the divinity of the Messiah.
- 7:16So the question would always be, did the Jews know that the
- 7:20Messiah would be divine? Does the Old Testament prove
- 7:26that the Messiah is God? Well, we told you last week,
- 7:33Isaiah 9 his name should be called El Gabor, the mighty God.
- 7:40He's also the everlasting Father or the father of eternity.
- 7:47Micah 5 verse #2 He's from everlasting to everlasting.
- 7:52Jeremiah 23 verse #6 says he's going to be called the branch,
- 7:57which is the Lord of righteousness.
- 8:03So the Old Testament clearly taught that the Messiah would be
- 8:06divine, the Messiah would be God.
- 8:10But when they answer the question, the answer only
- 8:16partially, not completely. They answer that yes, the
- 8:25Messiah will be the sun of David.
- 8:33So now what Christ does is very unique because he's going to
- 8:38take a passage of Scripture from the Psalms, the Psalm that's
- 8:44quoted the most in the New Testament.
- 8:47All three gospels quoted. Hebrews quotes it twice.
- 8:52Stephen quotes it or Peter quotes it in Acts chapter 3.
- 8:56It's quoted by Paul in First Corinthians chapter 15.
- 9:00It's Psalm 110. The most quoted Psalm in the New
- 9:03Testament is a Messianic Psalm. And every Jew without exception
- 9:11would know Psalm 110 was messianic.
- 9:15They would know that. And so Christ is going to take
- 9:20the Scriptures, the word of God, and he's going to explain to
- 9:24them the Messiah. Listen to what he says he said
- 9:33to them. Then how does David in the
- 9:39Spirit, queen of Mark's Gospel in the Holy Spirit, meaning
- 9:46under divine inspiration? David is going to speak under
- 9:50divine inspiration by the Holy Spirit of God.
- 9:54Then how does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
- 10:02The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your
- 10:08enemies beneath your feet. If David then calls him Lord,
- 10:17how is he his son? It's brilliant question.
- 10:27He's got them in a quandary because they're willing to admit
- 10:32that the Messiah is humanly the Son of David, but not divinely
- 10:39the Son of God, and yet their scriptures taught very clearly
- 10:44that the Messiah would be divine.
- 10:50He has them between a rock and a hard place.
- 10:55He asked them, how can this possibly be So he's going to
- 11:01quote from the Old Testament and he says simply, the Lord Yave
- 11:10said to my Lord Adonai. Now Adonai refers to an earthly
- 11:18Lord, but not always. But we know who Yave is.
- 11:24He's the Lord God of Israel. So when you read the Hebrew, it
- 11:29says Yahweh, the Lord said to my Adonai Lord.
- 11:37But the Greek Septuagint translates it Curious Lord both
- 11:44words. Every time Yahweh is translated
- 11:48into the Greek in the Old Testament, without exception,
- 11:51it's always translated curious every single time.
- 11:57And so in the Greek it says the Lord curious said to my Lord
- 12:05curious, meaning that the Lord is divine, David's Lord is
- 12:15divine, very, very important to understand this.
- 12:21And so he says, sit at my right hand.
- 12:25That's a, that's a, that's a place of equal position, equal
- 12:30authority, because it speaks of the equality of the sun until I
- 12:36put your enemies beneath your feet.
- 12:39A total execution or subjugation of his enemies.
- 12:45If David then calls him Lord, how?
- 12:51How is he a son? You see, everybody around them
- 12:59knew that Jesus was the son of David.
- 13:03They knew that in fact, the Pharisees never argued the point
- 13:07that Jesus was the descendant of David.
- 13:13They couldn't because the genealogical records that were
- 13:17kept in the temple would prove that he was a descendant of
- 13:22David through Joseph because of Solomon, and instead of David
- 13:26through Mary because of Nathan, his other son.
- 13:31So physically and legally, he was a descendant of David.
- 13:40He is a son of David, but is he the son of David?
- 13:45Is he the Messiah? That's the question.
- 13:49And you have the two blind men in Jericho who cry out to him.
- 13:54Have mercy on us, son of David. You have the two blind men in
- 13:59Galilee say the same thing. Have mercy on us, Son of David.
- 14:04You have the Canaanite woman who begs for mercy from the Son of
- 14:07David. We have on Monday the crowds
- 14:12yelling hosanna to the Son of David.
- 14:17So we had the crowds recognizing that Jesus is the Son of David.
- 14:22He is their Messiah. So they think so.
- 14:26They hope he is. But they reject him a few days
- 14:30later because he doesn't pull off politically what they think
- 14:34he needs to pull off and militarily what they think he
- 14:39needs to pull off in order to relieve them from Roman
- 14:42oppression. And so here is the Lord turning
- 14:47the tables on the Pharisees and asking them the all important
- 14:52question. Whose son is the Christ, the
- 14:58Messiah, David's Son, Right? Sorta.
- 15:06But you got to get the fact that he's also the Son of God.
- 15:09He is Lord, He is King. He's not even talking
- 15:15specifically about himself, although he is.
- 15:19He's specifically speaking about Old Testament prophecy because
- 15:24David says this before the son is born.
- 15:28David says this prophetically. David is saying the Lord said to
- 15:32my Lord prophetically. See.
- 15:36So he's giving a prophecy about the coming Messiah, calling his
- 15:41son Lord, calling his son God. Notice what it says next.
- 15:51It says no one was able to answer him a word, nor did
- 15:59anyone dare from that day on to ask him another question.
- 16:08Remember the last invitation of the Bible, Revelation chapter
- 16:1222. The last invitation given by God
- 16:18centers around the same theme, the identity of the Christ.
- 16:25Revelation 2216 I, Jesus and the root and offspring of David.
- 16:38I Jesus am the source of David's life in line.
- 16:44And I, Jesus am the son of David's life and line.
- 16:54The bright morning star. The invitation centers around
- 16:59the identity of the Messiah. Because you see, when you give
- 17:02an invitation to people, you must explain to them who the
- 17:05Messiah is. That's why John says many other
- 17:12signs did Jesus do that were not recorded in this book.
- 17:16You see, the Pharisees had seen all the credentials of the
- 17:18Messiah. They could not deny any of the
- 17:22miracles that Jesus had performed.
- 17:25They had seen all the miracles. They could not deny them.
- 17:31So John comes along and John 20 and says many other signs did
- 17:34Jesus do that are not written in this book, but these were
- 17:37written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
- 17:42Messiah, the Son of God. That's why John wrote his
- 17:50gospel. Now remember all the Gospels
- 17:55uniquely write about one phrase in the Old Testament and then
- 18:03expand that phrase we talked about two weeks ago.
- 18:07Let's see if you remember Matthew.
- 18:11Matthew writes specifically about a phrase in Zechariah 9
- 18:18verse #9 which says behold your king when he comes into
- 18:26Jerusalem on the backside of a donkey.
- 18:28Behold your king. So what does he do?
- 18:33His whole gospel is about the royalty of the Messiah.
- 18:40And then you come to Mark's gospel and Mark takes one phrase
- 18:45from Isaiah 42, one that says, Behold, my servant.
- 18:53And John's whole gospel is centered around the servanthood
- 18:56of the Messiah, emphasizing the humility of the Messiah.
- 19:02And then you come to Luke's gospel and Luke takes one phrase
- 19:06from Zechariah chapter 6, verse #12 which says behold a man.
- 19:14And Luke expands on that whole phrase, emphasizing the humanity
- 19:20of the Messiah. Then you come to John's Gospel.
- 19:25In John's gospel, he takes one phrase from the book of Isaiah,
- 19:32the 34th chapter, Behold Your God.
- 19:39And he takes 21 chapters and unfolds for us the fact that the
- 19:43Messiah is God. This is so important to
- 19:49understand. You need to grasp all this
- 19:53because the, the, the, the, the way the Spirit of God puts
- 19:57everything together in such a marvelous and such a miraculous
- 20:01kind of way. Help us understand the true
- 20:04identity of, of the Son of David, the, the Son of God.
- 20:11So you come to John's gospel and John's whole theme is behold
- 20:15your God. This is God in the flesh.
- 20:23That's why he says in in John chapter one verse #1 in the
- 20:26beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word
- 20:31was God. He was in the beginning with
- 20:33God. All things came into being
- 20:34through him and apart from him nothing came into being that has
- 20:39come into being. In Him was life, and the life
- 20:44was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness
- 20:49and the darkness did not comprehend it.
- 20:55May I present to you Jesus and all of us splendor and all of us
- 21:00glory and all of his beauty, because that's what John does.
- 21:05John is like the the Holy of holies of New Testament books.
- 21:11John is, is is all about presenting God and, and, and in
- 21:17John chapter 17, you, you have that high priestly prayer where
- 21:21deity is communicating with deity, the intimacy between the
- 21:25Father and the Son. There there is no more holier
- 21:30book in the New Testament than John's gospel because it
- 21:35portrays to us, presents to us the beauty of the living God.
- 21:39Now the whole Bible is about the Lord.
- 21:44The whole Bible presents to us the Christ, but John's gospel,
- 21:50unique and that it is, presents to us the beauty of the Lord.
- 21:56Behold your God, Isaiah 714 Emmanuel, God with us John 114
- 22:05the word became flesh. That's that's the Christmas
- 22:08story in one sentence. The word became flesh.
- 22:11God with us over in Luke's gospel, Luke chapter 1, it says
- 22:26as the Angel speaks to Mary, verse 31 and behold, you will
- 22:29conceive in your womb and bear a son to the name of Jesus.
- 22:35He will be great and he will be called the Son of the Most High
- 22:37and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
- 22:41He will reign over the House of Jacob Forever.
- 22:45This Kingdom will have no end. Mary said to the Angel.
- 22:49How can this be since I am a virgin?
- 22:53The Angel answered said to her. The Holy Spirit will come upon
- 22:56you, and the power of the Most High will over shadow you, and
- 23:01for that reason the holy child shall be called the Son of God.
- 23:09Behold your God. So John says these things are
- 23:18written that you might believe over 90 times.
- 23:23John uses the word believe because the essence of salvation
- 23:29is believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 23:33Do you believe in who he is? Do you believe in the identity
- 23:37of the Messiah? Do you believe that he is Son of
- 23:40God, Son of man? Do you believe in the humanity
- 23:44and the divinity of Christ? He is the God Man.
- 23:49He's 100% God, He's 100% man. He is 200% of something.
- 23:54You can't comprehend that. Neither can I because our mind
- 23:57only goes to 100%. But he's 200% of something, 100%
- 24:03God, 100% may not 50% God and 50% man.
- 24:08No, He's 100% man, 100% God. He is God in human flesh.
- 24:19So as I present to you Jesus, I present him to you in five
- 24:24different ways. Number one, His eternality #2
- 24:29His personality #3 His deity #4 His vitality and #5 His
- 24:38invincibility. Those are the 1st 5 verses of
- 24:43John chapter one. Last week we covered his E
- 24:48eternality. In the beginning was the word.
- 24:56In the beginning was the word. Now understand this was is the
- 25:06imperfect tense of Amy of the verb to be.
- 25:12So you can read verses one and two this way.
- 25:16In the beginning was continuously the word and the
- 25:24word was continuously with God, and the word was continually
- 25:30God. That's literally how it reads
- 25:36the word Amy, a very important word.
- 25:40Why? You know, if you've been with us
- 25:43long enough that we take you all the way back when Christ talks
- 25:46about the fact that he is the great I am, right, ego.
- 25:50Amy is the Greek translation of those four Hebrew consonants
- 25:55that make up the name of God in Exodus chapter 3 when Moses
- 25:59asked who shall I say sent me? And the Lord God of Israel says,
- 26:03tell him that I am sent you. Tell them to be sends you tell
- 26:11them that the eternal being sends you.
- 26:16That's his memorial name. His memorial name, students
- 26:20around his eternality. He always is because He always
- 26:25was and always will be. The eternal nature of God is
- 26:31important. Why?
- 26:32Because Jesus said in John 824, Unless you believe that I am,
- 26:36unless you believe that I am eternal being, you will die in
- 26:38your sins. Do you have to believe in the
- 26:41eternality of God to be saved? Answer Yes.
- 26:45Yes, you must believe in the eternal nature of the living
- 26:49God, that He is a God who is and was and always will be.
- 26:55You cannot deny the eternality of God because that's who He is.
- 27:00Unless you believe that I am, I am continuous, I am eternal.
- 27:07You will die in your sins. Unless you believe that I am the
- 27:09God who spoke to Moses in Exodus chapter 30, Exodus chapter 3,
- 27:16from the burning Bush, you will die in your sins.
- 27:19I am the God that's always being.
- 27:25That's who I am. And so John says in the
- 27:31beginning was continuously the Word.
- 27:37In other words, before the beginning, When did the
- 27:42beginning begin? Good question.
- 27:46Genesis one verse #1 in the beginning, God.
- 27:50So in the beginning, in the beginning God had already
- 27:58existed. He was existing continuously.
- 28:03In the beginning was the creation of time and space.
- 28:08If you're not a part of time and space, you are preexistent.
- 28:11You exist before time and space. If you exist before time and
- 28:17space, that means you are eternal.
- 28:21So before the beginning began, the word always continuously was
- 28:32and is. That's the point, the eternality
- 28:36of God. This is crucial to understand.
- 28:41Now listen to this, this is so good.
- 28:44In the beginning was the Word. Now why did he use the word?
- 28:47Why did he say in the beginning was Jesus?
- 28:49That would be pretty simple, wouldn't it?
- 28:51In the beginning was the Son, SON?
- 28:54Why didn't he say that? Why did they say in the
- 28:58beginning was the word Lagos? Why?
- 29:04Why would he do that? Well, he's going to appeal to
- 29:08the Jewish mind. He's going to appeal to the
- 29:12Greek mind. He's going to appeal to those
- 29:17who are engaged philosophically, the Greeks.
- 29:22He's going to appeal to those who are engaged theologically.
- 29:26The Jews, OK. To the Greeks, Lagos was an
- 29:35entity. It was a impersonal force.
- 29:41To the Greeks, they believed if there's a creation, then there
- 29:46was a cause to the creation, but the cause was a personal force,
- 29:52an impersonal force, not some person.
- 29:55So they named it Lagos. And John comes along and says, I
- 30:00want you to know that from the very beginning, before time ever
- 30:04began, the Lagos existed. The Lagos was there and the
- 30:10Lagos really is a person because the Lagos became flesh and dwelt
- 30:15among us. To the Jewish mind, the Lagos
- 30:19was the revelation of God. It was the word of God Speaking
- 30:24of the authority of God, the authenticity of God, the
- 30:27reliability of God, the veracity of God.
- 30:30So to the Jewish mind, Lagos spoke about the word itself, how
- 30:37the word was an expression of God.
- 30:42That's the only way he knew God was when God spoke.
- 30:46So that's how they came to understand who God was.
- 30:51So God would give revelation. God would speak because no man
- 30:55has seen God at any time. So when God would speak, he
- 30:58would exhibit himself. He would explain himself that
- 31:02that's why way back in Exodus chapter 34, as you recall, when
- 31:06Moses said I want, I want to see your glory.
- 31:08And the Lord said I can't let you see my glory and live.
- 31:11But the Lord did say this. He said in verse #5 of chapter
- 31:1834 of Exodus. The Lord descended in the cloud
- 31:21and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the
- 31:23Lord. So Moses is calling upon the
- 31:25name of the Lord. He wants the Lord to show
- 31:27himself. Then the Lord passed by in front
- 31:31of him and proclaimed. God said something, He
- 31:37proclaimed the Lord, the Lord God, compassion, gracious so to
- 31:41anger, and a bounty, and loving kindness and truth.
- 31:43Who keeps loving kindness for thousands?
- 31:45Who for gives iniquity, transgression and sin?
- 31:48Yet he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
- 31:51Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and on
- 31:54the grandchildren to the third and 4th generations, Moses made
- 31:58haste to bow down, bow low toward the earth and worship.
- 32:05He worshipped based on what was said, not based on what he saw.
- 32:12The Lord God proclaimed his glory, the Lord God spoke his
- 32:17glory. So that's how Moses then would
- 32:21bow and worship him, because he bowed under the authority of
- 32:25God's revelation. So to to a Jew, the Lagos was
- 32:31the revelation of God. To the Jew, the Word of the Lord
- 32:36is the expression of God to man and Jesus Christ is God speaking
- 32:41to us. Jesus Christ is the fullest
- 32:45revelation of God. That's why the Word became flesh
- 32:49and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, we beheld His beauty,
- 32:54we beheld the, the, the, the, the person of God expressed in
- 33:02Jesus Christ who is the exact representation of the Lord.
- 33:09And so that's why he uses the word.
- 33:13In the beginning was the word in the beginning was Lagos telling
- 33:20the Greeks, listen, the Lagos is not an impersonal force.
- 33:23It's truly an individual. It's a person.
- 33:25It's it's God in the flesh telling the telling the the
- 33:31Jewish audience that Jesus Christ, the word is the complete
- 33:35and full revelation of his glory.
- 33:38And John would say we beheld that glory.
- 33:41We're able to see the person of God.
- 33:46So important to understand what John is conveying to us.
- 33:53Revelation 1913 Jesus Christ returns his name, and by that
- 34:02name he is called the Word of God.
- 34:09That's his name, the word of God.
- 34:16In other words, it's, it's like when Jesus comes again, he's
- 34:19also called faithful and true because his word is faithful,
- 34:23His word is true. And so when it, when it, when he
- 34:27comes again the second time and his name is the word of God,
- 34:33it's as if he is saying, I told you already, I told you
- 34:37everything about my presence. I told you everything about my
- 34:40first coming. I told you everything about my
- 34:42second coming. I am the word of God.
- 34:44The inspired word is the Incarnate word and the Incarnate
- 34:48word is the inspired word. You must take them both the same
- 34:55because the Incarnate Word gives us the inspired Word and
- 35:00therefore John says in the beginning was the Word and the
- 35:08Word is God. He's God in the flesh.
- 35:14In the beginning there always existed the Word.
- 35:20Before time and space were created, the Word was in
- 35:24existence, speaking about the pre existence of the Word, the
- 35:28eternality of the Word. So John presents them first of
- 35:33all in the beauty of his eternality.
- 35:39Second of all, he presents them in the beauty of his
- 35:44personality. Listen very carefully to what
- 35:49the Bible says next. In the beginning was the Word,
- 35:56and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- 36:07He was in the beginning with God.
- 36:13Twice it says that the Word was in the beginning with God.
- 36:24When the beginning began, the eternal 1 already existed.
- 36:35He existed outside of time and space because he's a creator of
- 36:38time and space. So in the beginning the Word
- 36:47existed as God, and he existed with God.
- 37:01So the Word existed eternity past as God, as the eternal God,
- 37:11and the eternal God existed with the eternal God.
- 37:18Speaking of the triune nature of God, that God is 3 and 1.
- 37:24Here you have two of them. He is 3 and 1.
- 37:29He is 1 God. That manifests Himself in three
- 37:32distinct persons. And John, for the very outset
- 37:36only speaks not just of His, his eternality, but of His
- 37:41personality, that He is unique and distinct person.
- 37:45He is one of three very important to understand that for
- 37:52instance, in the beginning God, this is one one word for God is
- 37:58Elohim. The I am ending means that it's
- 38:02plural, but it doesn't say in the beginning God's.
- 38:07It says in the beginning God right created the heavens and
- 38:12the earth. But note this.
- 38:16The Bible says in Justice 126 let us make man in our image.
- 38:27Why doesn't God say let me make man in my image?
- 38:32He says let us make God in our image.
- 38:37Why? Because God is in a relationship
- 38:40with himself. Who is God speaking to?
- 38:47Who is God speaking to in the beginning God, let us make man
- 38:53in our image. In fact, tell me in your Bible
- 38:57to the book of Titus, Titus chapter one, first one, listen
- 39:04to what it says. Paul, a bond servant of God and
- 39:06an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God
- 39:10and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness
- 39:13in the hope of eternal life, which God who cannot lie,
- 39:18promised long ages ago or promised before time began.
- 39:26Let me ask you a question. Who did God make a promise to
- 39:30before time began? He didn't make it to the angels
- 39:34because they weren't created yet.
- 39:36They were created somewhere between Genesis 11 and Genesis
- 39:3812. Man wasn't created to day 6.
- 39:44So who did God make a promise to?
- 39:47Before time began? God made a promise.
- 39:51Who did he make a promise to turn over to?
- 39:55Second Timothy one, Second Timothy one verse #9 it says
- 40:04God. God saved us and called us with
- 40:06a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His
- 40:08own purpose and grace. Which was granted us in Christ
- 40:14Jesus from all eternity, or the exact same phrase in Titus one
- 40:18verse #2 before time began. So God had a purpose before time
- 40:25began, and in that purpose He made a promise.
- 40:28But who did He make the promise to before time began?
- 40:32In the beginning was the Word, the eternal Word of God.
- 40:37In the beginning was the Word, and the eternal Word existed
- 40:41with the eternal God. He was face to face with God.
- 40:46Speaking of the equality of the nature of God the Son and God
- 40:52the Father. Face to face means equal.
- 40:57So you have the proof of the triune nature of God beginning
- 41:02in John's gospel, because these things are written that you
- 41:05might believe in who Jesus Christ is.
- 41:09He's the second person of the triune nature of God.
- 41:13In the beginning was the eternal word that always existed, that
- 41:19was not created during time and space, because He was the one
- 41:22who created time and space. So he had to be eternal, and He
- 41:27existed with God. The eternal God existed with the
- 41:33eternal God. Speaking of the eternal nature
- 41:37of the God, speak of the fact that Jesus is God in the flesh.
- 41:45This is so important to grasp. Why?
- 41:49Because people will deny the deity of Christ.
- 41:53They will deny the reality of the Messiah in the true identity
- 41:57of the Messiah. And that's why I think I told
- 42:02you a couple weeks ago, every cult has a Jesus, right?
- 42:06But Christianity doesn't have a Muhammad.
- 42:10Christianity doesn't have a Joseph Smith.
- 42:13Christianity doesn't have Buddha, right?
- 42:17But every cult has Jesus. They have a Jesus.
- 42:21He's a prophet. He's a good man.
- 42:23But they have a Jesus. Why?
- 42:25Because Satan is a master of disguise, master of deception.
- 42:31He wants to draw you away from the true Jesus.
- 42:34But only Christianity has the true Jesus, the one who existed
- 42:40before time and space, the eternal God himself.
- 42:47That's who he is. And so the Bible is very clear
- 42:55about the eternality of God. The Bible is very clear about
- 42:59the personality of God. He existed with God.
- 43:05All that to say is that God was in a relationship with himself
- 43:09before time began. And the whole plan, the whole
- 43:13purpose, was to redeem a bride for a son.
- 43:22The whole plan of redemption wasn't conjured up after the
- 43:26fall. The whole plan of redemption,
- 43:29the whole plan of the cross, wasn't something that God
- 43:32made-up because of sin. No, it was all a part of the
- 43:36plan. It was all a part of Plan A from
- 43:40the very beginning, before time began in the eternity past.
- 43:46Our names are written in the Lamb's book of Life in eternity
- 43:50past, before time ever began. Think about that.
- 43:55God had a purpose and a plan to redeem a bride for his Son.
- 44:00And in that redemptive process, you, me, and those who believe
- 44:08in the Lord Jesus Christ, we've become a part of that bride.
- 44:13That's what the Bible says. If you confess with your mouth
- 44:18Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him
- 44:24from the dead, you will be saved.
- 44:28Why? Because one day every knee will
- 44:31bow, every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
- 44:39Jesus Christ is yave, the God of Israel.
- 44:44Every tongue will confess that. So when Christ gathers these
- 44:50religious leaders together, they're they're already gathered
- 44:53together around him and the multitude is gathered there on
- 44:56the Temple Mount. He asked them the only question
- 45:00that matters, whose son is the Christ?
- 45:06Do you understand him as Son of David and Son of God, or just
- 45:13Son of David? Do you see the Son of David as
- 45:17divine as the Lord that existed before time began?
- 45:24Because David would speak prophetically before the Son was
- 45:27ever born, calling him Lord under the inspiration of the
- 45:31Spirit of God. That's the only question that
- 45:36matters. I don't know why you're here
- 45:39today. I don't know what brought you
- 45:41here today. I don't know who dragged you
- 45:44here today, but you're here today.
- 45:48You're here today for one specific reason that you would
- 45:52hear John one verse one and verse 2.
- 45:59Next week we get to verse 3. But the important thing is that
- 46:04the Lord wants you to know his identity.
- 46:07That's why we entitled the sermon, May I Present Jesus.
- 46:13You need to know who Jesus is because without Him you're lost.
- 46:21With Him you have life. And so you need to understand
- 46:27the identity of the Christ and the Lord Brought you here today
- 46:33to hear the sermon on the eternality of the Son, the
- 46:39personality of the eternality of that Son who stood face to face
- 46:47with the eternal God as eternal God.
- 46:52Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal God?
- 46:56Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of David?
- 46:59Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah of Israel, the
- 47:03Messiah of God? Do you believe in who Jesus
- 47:06Christ is? Told you last week, there are so
- 47:10many people who preach another Jesus, but not the true Jesus.
- 47:16Here we present to you the true Jesus of the Scriptures.
- 47:22My prayer is that everyone of you would know him personally,
- 47:27intimately, because he's forgiven you of your sins.
- 47:31He's wiped them all away, and you stand righteous before him.
- 47:37Let's pray together. Father, we thank you for today.
- 47:41We thank you for Your word, the truth of it, and how it is.
- 47:45You make it so clear and obvious to all of us.
- 47:50Lord, our prayer is that we would take your word and apply
- 47:53it to our lives. And for everyone who is here
- 47:56today, Lord, please I pray for their eternal destiny.
- 48:03If someone is here and does not know you, may today be the day
- 48:07of their salvation. May your spirit do it's
- 48:11convicting. Work in their hearts that they
- 48:14might come to saving faith. And for those who do know you,
- 48:17Lord, arm them with the truth of your word.
- 48:20So when they come across people who deny your deity, who deny
- 48:25your eternality, who deny your veracity, they would be able to
- 48:31take them to the scriptures and say this is what the word of the
- 48:34Lord says. You've given us the sword, the
- 48:38sword of the Spirit, which is our offensive weapon.
- 48:42May we use it for the glory of your name until you come again,
- 48:46as you most surely will in Jesus name.
