- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37There is not one situation that you can run into in this life
- 0:42where you can't see it covered in this word.
- 0:45Nothing. But if you do read any books
- 0:47other than this, make sure that those books line up totally with
- 0:53this. Not well, some of it does, but
- 0:56some of the questions, some of it just cause you to think
- 0:58outside the box. No, we don't need to think
- 1:01outside the box. We need to think inside the
- 1:04word, not outside the box. What challenge are you facing
- 1:08that God's Word hasn't already covered?
- 1:11In today's message, Pastor Lewis declares that no situation
- 1:15you'll ever face is left out of this book.
- 1:18Every trial, question, and need is spoken to here.
- 1:22If you read anything else, make sure it lines up completely with
- 1:25Scripture. Books that partly agree or push
- 1:28you to think outside the box can pull you away from the truth.
- 1:33His Word is enough for every moment of life.
- 1:37How do you keep God's Word as your final authority in every
- 1:39situation? Now here's Pastor Lewis in First
- 1:43Timothy Chapter 4 with today's edition of Living Waters of
- 1:47Grace. Please turn in your Bibles to
- 1:49First Timothy chapter 4. Can you imagine when we are with
- 1:55the Lord and we are with Him for eternity, how it's going to be 1
- 2:00long worship time with the Lord? It's going to be an endless
- 2:04Hallelujah to the King, and we can have that here now, being in
- 2:08the family of God and being in Christ Jesus.
- 2:11Our worship time should be a endless Hallelujah to the King
- 2:15even now. Amen.
- 2:17OK, let's pray and then we're going to go into the word of
- 2:20God, Amen. Father God in Jesus name.
- 2:22Lord, we do thank you. We thank you, Father, because
- 2:25once again, as we have, and we thank you that you have given us
- 2:29your word, not my word or anyone else's word or you've given us
- 2:34your word that we have the truth in front of us, Lord, that we
- 2:37can read it every day. But we thank you, Lord, that we
- 2:40have fellowship with you, Lord, when we spend time in your word.
- 2:44And now, Father, I ask you, Lord, for your power, your
- 2:48anointing. I ask you, God, that you would
- 2:51just be with us today. Your word says we're two or
- 2:53three are gathered in your name that you would be in the midst
- 2:56of us Lord, there's a lot more than two or three here today,
- 2:59Father, we pray that you would just be in the midst of us today
- 3:02that your love would just be over pouring.
- 3:04We pray Father that your power Lord would just drench us did
- 3:08anointing and that it would not only bring the truth of your
- 3:11word and reveal the truth of your word Lord, but that it
- 3:14would be a cause us our hearts to be receptacles Lord to be
- 3:18able to receive your word and that it would grow in US Lord
- 3:22and cause us to grow and to look more like your son Jesus Christ.
- 3:26Father, help me. I need Father for you to speak
- 3:29the words Lord for you just use me as an instrument of Labor for
- 3:34your will and for your work in Jesus name we pray Amen.
- 3:39So this is a letter that Paul has written to his beloved son
- 3:44in the spirit Timothy. And it's a very instructional
- 3:49letter, highly instructional. And I love reading these kind of
- 3:53letters. I love reading these kind of
- 3:55epistles because it gives us very clear instruction as to
- 3:59what it is that pleases God and what it is that we are to be
- 4:03looking to God for the work that he's doing in us.
- 4:08So it's like a father who was sitting down.
- 4:10And I thought about that even this past week as I was sitting
- 4:13down with my father. It's like a father sitting down
- 4:16with a young son and he's giving him instructions in life and
- 4:20giving him instructions on the things of the Spirit, things in
- 4:24the Spirit. Timothy's a young pastor and he
- 4:27needs the instruction from his mentor and his father in the
- 4:31faith. So it's almost like if you can
- 4:34picture Paul sitting there and Timothy basically sitting at his
- 4:38feet and listening to the instruction that Paul has
- 4:42received through spending time with the Holy Spirit.
- 4:45And if you remember the last thing that was discussed in
- 4:49chapter 3 verse 16, the verse says and without controversy
- 4:53great is the mystery of godliness or God likeness as it
- 4:58was God who was manifested in the flesh.
- 5:01He was justified in the spirit and he was seen by angels and he
- 5:05preached among the Gentiles believed on in the world and
- 5:09then he was received up into glory.
- 5:11And we talked about that the last time that we talked about
- 5:15first Timothy. But it's this doctrine of faith
- 5:19that we believe that Jesus was God in the flesh who came to be
- 5:24an earthly example for us to be able to actually see the word of
- 5:28God. But now here in in chapter 4,
- 5:32Paul gives Timothy a warning and gives him a prophecy.
- 5:36He starts it off with a prophecy as a warning.
- 5:39And this is something that he's talked about before about these
- 5:43doctrines coming into the church back in in chapter 1.
- 5:46He said, preach no other doctrine, Timothy, don't preach
- 5:49anything else other than the doctrine that we have given you.
- 5:52And Galatians says, if anybody preaches anything other than
- 5:56what we've given you, let them be accursed.
- 5:58I don't care if it's an Angel. If they come and preach anything
- 6:02other than what we have given you, let them be accursed so
- 6:07early. Here in this particular letter,
- 6:09we see that Paul's giving another warning.
- 6:12So let's take it up in verse one.
- 6:13Let's read it through to verse 5.
- 6:16He says. Now the Spirit expressly says
- 6:19that in the latter times some will depart from the faith,
- 6:22giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,
- 6:26speaking lies and hypocrisy, having their own conscience seer
- 6:30with a a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain
- 6:34from foods which God created. To be received with Thanksgiving
- 6:40by those who believe and know the truth.
- 6:43For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be
- 6:47refused if it is received with Thanksgiving, for it is
- 6:51sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
- 6:55So we look at this and we say, well, Paul says that the Spirit
- 6:59expressly says. And, and what that word can also
- 7:02mean is that the Spirit explicitly says, or it clearly
- 7:06says, or it clearly points out Timothy.
- 7:09I don't know if it was a situation where Paul was looking
- 7:12in the Old Testament, was reading some old prophecies, or
- 7:15if it was something recently that Paul had been praying about
- 7:19and the Spirit revealed this to Paul.
- 7:22And it was probably both. But he says the spirit expressly
- 7:25or it clearly says that in the latter times, deceiving spirits
- 7:30and doctrines of demons, the people will heed to these
- 7:34things. Some are going to depart from
- 7:35the faith, and they're going to give heed to these deceiving
- 7:38spirits and doctrines of demons. So when he says in the latter
- 7:42times, that's much different than talking about the latter,
- 7:45the latter days, he's not talking about the end times.
- 7:48This is the church that is beginning.
- 7:50Paul had planted many churches and he's saying that in the
- 7:54latter times after my departure when I'm gone, as he spoke about
- 7:58in Acts chapter 20 when he was talking to the elders and
- 8:02Ephesians. He says after I leave here,
- 8:04they're going to be men who are going to come in with all these
- 8:07deceiving doctrines and teaching things.
- 8:10They're going to be wolves and sheeps clothing.
- 8:13And Paul is saying here that in that latter times, after these
- 8:18things, after this point where the churches have been
- 8:20established in the latter times, they're going to be people who
- 8:24are going to come in and they are going to bring deceiving
- 8:27spirits and doctrines of demons, very powerful words, deceiving
- 8:33spirits, doctrines of demons, not just false doctrines.
- 8:38He's saying that they're going to have their origin and demonic
- 8:41warfare, demonic power, demonic influence.
- 8:46And he's talking about the fact that these these people are
- 8:49coming in with spirits that are and given doctrines that are
- 8:52going to be contrary to the word of God.
- 8:57There's going to be doctrines that people are going to come in
- 8:59with and cause you to question what you know about the truth.
- 9:03And anything that you hear or anything that you read that
- 9:08causes you to question the truth of the doctrine is not of God.
- 9:13It is of the devil. It is of the devil and it has
- 9:17his roots. What he's talking about here
- 9:19actually has his roots back in Genesis.
- 9:22Back in Genesis chapter 2, when the evil one came to deceive
- 9:27Eve, the first thing he did was made her question what God had
- 9:30said to Adam. That was the first thing he did.
- 9:33So I'm going to go back there and I'm going to look at just a
- 9:35couple things just to point out how these doctrines of demons,
- 9:38how it started back in Genesis. So we go to Genesis chapter 2
- 9:43and we look at verse 16 and 17, and it simply says this.
- 9:49And the Lord commanded the man, saying that this was the
- 9:52commandment of the Lord. Of every tree of the garden you
- 9:56may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and
- 9:59evil you shall not eat, for in a day that you eat of it, you
- 10:04shall die. Now that's the commandment of
- 10:07the Lord. That's the word of the Lord.
- 10:09That's the truth because God only speaks truth.
- 10:13But look at what the devil did. Now this is when the doctrine of
- 10:15demon comes in Luke in chapter 3.
- 10:18And we're going to look right here at the end of verse one.
- 10:21And he said to the woman Speaking of the serpent, who was
- 10:25the image of the demon of the demonic spirit.
- 10:29And he says to the woman, has God indeed said, you shall not
- 10:34eat of every tree in the garden? Look how he tries to get her to
- 10:38question what God has said. That's what doctrines of demons
- 10:42do. They try to get you to question
- 10:44the truth of what God has said. And then if you go over to verse
- 10:484, it says then the serpent said to the woman, you will not
- 10:51surely die, for God knows in the day that you eat of it, your
- 10:55eyes will be open and you will be like God, knowing good and
- 11:01evil. How many doctrines are out there
- 11:04where they're trying to infuse this false strength is false
- 11:11power into people, into thinking that you yourself are God.
- 11:14You yourself were in control of your faith.
- 11:17You yourself were in control of what you do in life.
- 11:20You were in control. No one else has to be in
- 11:22control. Those Christians are crazy.
- 11:24They're weak people. They're dependent on somebody
- 11:26else or something else. But you, you have power.
- 11:29You're your own God. Doctrines of demons.
- 11:34Doctrines of demons. Listen, God has given us His
- 11:38Word and has everything in it that we could possibly need from
- 11:42Genesis to Revelation. There is not one situation that
- 11:48you can run into in this life where you can't see it covered
- 11:51in this word. Nothing.
- 11:54But if you do read any books other than this, make sure that
- 11:57those books line up totally with this.
- 12:01Not well, some of it does, but some of the questions, some of
- 12:05it just cause you to think outside the box.
- 12:07No, we don't need to think outside the box.
- 12:09We need to think inside the word, not outside a box.
- 12:14So just make sure that whatever you read that is consistent,
- 12:17totally consistent with the Word of God, because it only takes
- 12:21just a little bit to take you off to the right or to take you
- 12:24off to the left. And that's what was happening
- 12:26here. And he says here that they will
- 12:28depart from the faith. Now, that depart doesn't mean
- 12:31that they're going to, you know, walk away from salvation or walk
- 12:34away from their salvation or walk away totally from God.
- 12:37But they will depart from the teaching of Christian ethics.
- 12:40They're going to walk away from the core things of the gospel,
- 12:44the core things of the truth of the doctrine of God.
- 12:47They're going to walk away from that.
- 12:49They're going to stop teaching things that are rooted and
- 12:51grounded in the faith and start teaching other things that have
- 12:54come in with these doctrines of demons and these deceiving
- 12:57spirits. And it says they're going to
- 12:59give heed to those things. That means they're going to pay
- 13:02attention to it. They're going to actually turn
- 13:04toward those things. And after they do that in the
- 13:07way that they're going to do, the way it's going to be played
- 13:09out is that they're going to be speaking lies in hypocrisy.
- 13:13As it says they're in verse 2, they're going to be speaking
- 13:16lies in hypocrisy. They're going to be hypocrites
- 13:18like Jesus referred to the the Pharisees as hypocrites.
- 13:21They live hypocritic lives. They try to look one way and try
- 13:25to act like they're one way, but really all the bondage that they
- 13:27put on other people, they themselves can't do it.
- 13:30And these are going to, the teachers are going to be trying
- 13:32to look holy, try to look religious, but their doctrine is
- 13:35totally contrary to the things of God, totally contrary to the
- 13:39things of God. They're going to be people who
- 13:43give heed to these things and they're going to speak these
- 13:45lies in hypocrisy. And as a result of doing that,
- 13:49look at what it says at the end of verse 2.
- 13:51As a result of doing this and doing it over time, totally
- 13:55refusing the truth, standing away from the truth, standing
- 13:59apart from the truth, speaking consistently, things that are
- 14:03evil, things that are contrary to the word of God.
- 14:07After they do that for so long, their conscience then becomes
- 14:11seared with a hot iron. And that's an interesting
- 14:14picture. My wife and I want to go to
- 14:17Montana and Wyoming. We like to travel and we want to
- 14:20go to Montana and Wyoming. We want to do a dude ranch.
- 14:25I know you. You're picturing me on a horse.
- 14:26I know you are. What in the world is he going to
- 14:29do on a horse? I know, but believe it or not, I
- 14:31actually love horses. We we route.
- 14:33In fact, our first date was a horseback riding.
- 14:35I took a horseback riding, believe it or not, but anyway,
- 14:38we want to go to a dude ranch because we know that on a dude
- 14:41ranch, one of the things that they do is that they brand
- 14:44cattle, they brand young horses, they brand these things.
- 14:48And, and I never really considered the whole art of
- 14:51branding or the practice of branding or what it meant until
- 14:54I started studying this. And, and what's interesting
- 14:57about it is that the branding actually not only burns the
- 15:00flesh, the top flesh, but actually burns the nerve endings
- 15:05so that they become numb back there.
- 15:07They become numb back there. What I'm is what I'm told and
- 15:10and they can't feel, they can't feel.
- 15:13And I've heard people talk about having things cauterized, where
- 15:16they lose feeling in certain areas of their body, which is,
- 15:19and it's almost like the same thing, this cauterization or
- 15:22just branding. And this is exactly what happens
- 15:25when you walk in disobedience to God over a long period of time.
- 15:30The conscience becomes branded, it becomes insensitive to the
- 15:36things of God. You don't even be convicted
- 15:39anymore. You're not convicted anymore.
- 15:41Then you get further and further away and you hear his voice
- 15:44further and further away to the point that you can't even hear
- 15:46his voice anymore. You become insensitive to
- 15:49righteousness, become insensitive to goodness.
- 15:52And this is what happened with these false teachers.
- 15:55Their their conscience are seared with a hot iron and they
- 15:59don't have the ability to feel the truth anymore, to know the
- 16:04truth, to be able to sense the truth they don't have anymore.
- 16:07Their hearts are damaged. So he says here in verse three
- 16:11and one of the one of the things that they begin to teach, having
- 16:15this branded or the seared conscience.
- 16:19One of the things that they begin to teach is forbidding to
- 16:22marry and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to
- 16:27be received with Thanksgiving. Now the forbidding of marriage.
- 16:31So now since they have turned away from the doctrine of God
- 16:35and turned away from the truth of the gospel, they now want to
- 16:38forbid what God has given all of us a right to.
- 16:43It's clear that the Bible does not teach forbidding of
- 16:47marriage. It clearly teaches marriage.
- 16:50In fact, it's one of the first institutions that God created.
- 16:53But the devil, these demons, and these and these doctrines say
- 16:56no, we got to stay away from it. If you want to really be holy,
- 16:59if you want to really look righteous, if you want to really
- 17:01look religious, don't get married.
- 17:04Don't get married. No, no.
- 17:06That is a doctrine of demon. It's a doctrine of demons.
- 17:11We are to get married. Now Paul says that there are
- 17:13people who have the gift or who have the the heart.
- 17:17They're like, well, you know, there's two ways you can be a
- 17:19eunuch, right? We know that the one way is
- 17:21obviously the removal body parts, but the other way is the
- 17:24fact that you just decide that you will not marry and you will
- 17:28not have to deal with that kind of pleasure or be involved in
- 17:33that kind of pleasure to be with a wife.
- 17:35OK, that's another way, but that's not what this is talking
- 17:38about. This is actually forbidding
- 17:40people to get married. Paul says that he has the gift
- 17:43to be able to do that, but if that's not you, then you need to
- 17:48marry because it's better to marry than to burn with lust.
- 17:53So marriage is definitely something that God gives us a
- 17:56right to do. And then he says in commanding
- 17:59to abstain from foods which God created to be received with
- 18:03Thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
- 18:06So now we think about Peter, who had grown up in the law, grown
- 18:11up under the law, and when God began to present to him that he
- 18:16listened. This is grace.
- 18:17Now we're in the New Testament now and we're not forbidding you
- 18:21to eat things anymore the way that it was in the in the law,
- 18:25because it was God showing Israel his perfect
- 18:29righteousness, his perfect righteousness.
- 18:32But now all these things lead to Jesus Christ.
- 18:34We don't have to do that. So that the Lord showed Peter
- 18:38the example of all these different animals that at one
- 18:41time Peter would not have eaten. He called him unclean.
- 18:44God said don't ever call unclean what I call clean, arise and
- 18:49eat. And if we go back again, back to
- 18:52Genesis in creation, when God created these animals, he said
- 18:56they were good. Everything God created is good.
- 19:01So no, we don't have to stay away from these things.
- 19:04And and it's just a matter of control.
- 19:06These doctrines of demons are always doing things to try to
- 19:09control or to instill fear into people.
- 19:12It's being religious and legalistic and Paul said no,
- 19:16stay away from that. That is not true.
- 19:18Those are doctrines of demons for people who forbid to marry
- 19:22and commanding to abstain from staying from foods.
- 19:25I love Reesey peanut butter cups, so I'm glad my wife is in
- 19:28here to hear this because now if I want to get a Reesey peanut
- 19:31buttercup, listen, they look what was not good to eat five
- 19:37years ago is supposed to be good to eat now.
- 19:39They tell us at one time, don't eat beef, eat beef, don't eat
- 19:44pork, No, eat pork, don't eat this, no, eat that.
- 19:48I mean, it's always, always something that you're not
- 19:50supposed to eat. You can't eat.
- 19:51You can't eat it, you can't eat it, Paul said.
- 19:53I got a solution. Bless it, give Thanksgiving over
- 19:57it, pray over it, and you don't have to worry about it.
- 20:01Now, I realize that there are some people, because of health
- 20:03reasons that they should stay away from certain foods.
- 20:05I realize that. But it's not that it's
- 20:08forbidden. It's not that it's forbidden.
- 20:11Spiritually that is not the reason, health reasons we
- 20:15understand. But Paul said look, just pray
- 20:18over it, pray over it. And so then he says here in
- 20:20verse four, he says every creature as we said is good and
- 20:24nothing is to be refused if it is received with Thanksgiving,
- 20:28for it is sanctified by the word of God and is sanctified by
- 20:33prayer. And one of the things that we
- 20:35understand is that everything we do as Christians, everything we
- 20:39do should be set apart, should be set apart.
- 20:43In 1st Corinthians 10 and 31, he says whether you eat or drink or
- 20:48whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
- 20:52That means just set apart for the glory of God.
- 20:56So marriage, eating, possessions are all spirit.
- 21:00They all be spiritual issues because they're all given to us
- 21:03to be enjoyed. But we must understand the
- 21:05source. And the source is that it comes
- 21:08from God #1 and it's provided by God.
- 21:11And that's why we say prayers when we eat, right?
- 21:14We bless the food. We bless it because we
- 21:17acknowledge that it was God that created it.
- 21:19And he said it was good, number one.
- 21:22Number two, we bless it because God provided it and we're
- 21:25thankful. So it's more a matter of
- 21:28Thanksgiving. It even is just blessing the
- 21:31food. It's a matter of Thanksgiving,
- 21:33and we see where Jesus Christ himself, before he would eat, He
- 21:37would give thanks for his food. When he sat down to feed the
- 21:405000 and Matthew 14 and 19, before he distributed the food
- 21:45among the 5000 people, He sat them all down and he gave
- 21:48thanks. Then he broke it and he
- 21:51distributed. And the same thing even with the
- 21:53Passover. When he ate the Passover meal
- 21:56with his disciples, the Bible says that after He gave thanks
- 22:00or when He gave thanks he break it any distributed.
- 22:05It is important that we give thanks to God when you know I
- 22:08love when I'm sitting in a restaurant and there's another
- 22:10family that's there and we see them praying together before
- 22:13they eat. I love seeing that I love seeing
- 22:16that I love seeing young kids who understand that I don't eat
- 22:19anything off this table until I give thanks.
- 22:23That's a wonderful thing, a wonderful thing.
- 22:26Give thanks. So then in verse 6 he goes on,
- 22:29he says, if you instruct the brethren in these things and
- 22:33what things and all the things we just got finished talking
- 22:35about instructor brothers about these bad false teachers,
- 22:39instruct them about how to look out for these doctrines of
- 22:43demons and these deceiving spirits.
- 22:45Instructor brethren about setting things apart for the
- 22:49Lord's purpose and doing all things unto the Lord.
- 22:52He says if you do that, then you will be a good minister of Jesus
- 22:58Christ. Nourished.
- 23:00I love this word nourished in the words of faith.
- 23:03That word nourished. It's a powerful word.
- 23:05It means actually to be sustained, sustained by the
- 23:09words of faith, to be supplied with everything that's necessary
- 23:13for my life, for life and living and health is all, and my
- 23:18spiritual growth is all supplied to me.
- 23:21And I'm sustained through the words of faith, through the
- 23:26words of faith. Studying the Word of God has
- 23:29impact on our lives in so many different areas.
- 23:33Obeying the word of God has impact in our lives in so many
- 23:37different areas. It sustains us.
- 23:40It sustains us. And then he says it's a good
- 23:43minister of Jesus Christ who is sustained by the words of faith.
- 23:48It's a good minister that has supplied everything that is
- 23:51necessary for life through the Word of God.
- 23:57This has been another encouraging edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Lewis Harrell has shared
- 24:04some good reminders for us to learn and walk in today as he's
- 24:08teaching through the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:11There are useful practices and advice that the Apostle Paul
- 24:16offers to Timothy in these books.
- 24:18From a fellow pastor, Paul imparts some wisdom to Timothy
- 24:22about solid leadership and what some of the criteria should be
- 24:27for leadership. There are specific passages
- 24:30directed towards men and women, respectively.
- 24:33And All in all, there's much to gain in coming to an awareness
- 24:36of God's heart for each person and God's purposes for each one.
- 24:42We're happy that you've taken the time today to listen.
