- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is one week till
- 0:16Christmas. It is the 18th of December.
- 0:19It's Monday and I am alive and it is great to have your
- 0:24company. Last week, as I said, I hiked
- 0:28across the South Coast of Tasmania and I lived to tell the
- 0:32story. It was gruelling and exhausting
- 0:35and I didn't know how sore every muscle in one's body could be.
- 0:39But grinning ear to ear the whole time?
- 0:41Actually, not the whole time. Some of it was just downright
- 0:45incredibly, incredibly hard. But overall, wow, what an
- 0:49incredible experience. And also just to get away from
- 0:52the busyness of everything in this season, as you can hear
- 0:55with the background music, it's awfully Christmassy because the
- 0:59world is awfully Christmassy at the moment.
- 1:02But so good just to get out and be surrounded by God's glory and
- 1:07majesty that is so much bigger than us as we come into this
- 1:12time where we see God's rescue plan enacted for us through
- 1:17Christmas. So this is so exciting.
- 1:20And the other exciting thing is this is the week that we finish
- 1:24reading the book of Isaiah today and tomorrow we will wrap up
- 1:28this monster of a book. Last week you would remember
- 1:33that the people of Israel were crying out in lament.
- 1:36God remember us, remember us. And this last two chapters is
- 1:41God responding to his people. And we will hear what he has to
- 1:46say today, all about the fact that many people will receive
- 1:49judgment and some salvation. And then tomorrow we will finish
- 1:55it up. And then we've got a treat.
- 1:57We've got a little bit of Christmas reading, the beginning
- 2:00of Matthew as we celebrate the end of Advent coming into
- 2:04Christmas next week. So all that's left for us to do
- 2:07now is to settle in, clear our hearts and our minds come before
- 2:14our wonderful, majestic God as we read together.
- 2:19Isaiah, Chapter 65. The Lord says I was ready to
- 2:35respond, but no one asked for help.
- 2:38I was ready to be found, but no one was looking for me.
- 2:42I said, here I am. Here I am to a nation that did
- 2:46not call on my name. All day long I opened my arms to
- 2:52a rebellious people, but they follow their own evil paths and
- 2:56their own crooked schemes. All day long they insult me to
- 3:00my face by worshipping idols in their sacred gardens.
- 3:04They burn incense on Pagan altars.
- 3:08At night they go out among the graves worshipping the dead.
- 3:12They eat the flesh of pigs and make stews with other forbidden
- 3:15foods. Yet they say to each other,
- 3:18don't come too close or you will defile me.
- 3:21I am holier than you. These people are a stench in my
- 3:26nostrils, an acrid smell that never goes away.
- 3:30Look, my decree is written out in front of me.
- 3:34I will not stand silent. I will repay them in full.
- 3:38Yes, I will repay them both for their own sins and for those of
- 3:43their ancestors, says the Lord. For they also burned incense on
- 3:48the mountains and insulted me on the hills.
- 3:51I will pay them back in full, but I will not destroy them all,
- 3:56says the Lord. For just as good grapes are
- 3:59found among a cluster of bad ones, and someone will say,
- 4:02don't throw them all the way, some of those grapes are good,
- 4:06So I will not destroy all Israel, for I still have true
- 4:11servants there. I will preserve a remnant of the
- 4:15people of Israel and of Judah to possess my land.
- 4:19Those I choose will inherit it, and my servants will live there.
- 4:24The plain of Sharon will again be filled with flocks of my
- 4:28people who have searched for me, and the valley of Acor will be a
- 4:33place of pasture herds. But because the rest of you have
- 4:37forsaken the Lord, and have forsaken his temple, and because
- 4:41you have prepared feasts to honour the God of fate, and have
- 4:45offered mixed wine to the God of destiny, now I will destine you
- 4:50for the sword. All of you will bow down before
- 4:54the executioner. For when I called, you did not
- 4:57answer. When I spoke, you did not
- 5:00listen. You deliberately sinned before
- 5:03my very eyes and chose to do what you know I despise.
- 5:09Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 5:13My servants will eat, but you will starve.
- 5:17My servants will drink, but you will be thirsty.
- 5:21My servants will rejoice, but you will be sad and ashamed.
- 5:25My servants will sing for joy, but you will cry in sorrow and
- 5:30despair. Your name will be a curse word
- 5:33among my people, for the sovereign Lord will destroy you
- 5:37and will call his true servants by another name.
- 5:41All who invoke a blessing or take an oath will do so by the
- 5:45God of truth. For I will put aside my anger
- 5:49and forget the evil of earlier days.
- 5:52Look, I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will
- 5:58ever think about the old ones anymore.
- 6:00Be glad, Rejoice forever in my creation.
- 6:04And look, I will create Jerusalem as a place of
- 6:07happiness. Her people will be a source of
- 6:11joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem
- 6:14and delight in my people when the sound of weeping and crying
- 6:19will be heard in it. No more.
- 6:22No longer will babies die when only a few days old.
- 6:26No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life.
- 6:30No longer will people be considered old at 100.
- 6:35Only the cursed will die that young.
- 6:37In those days, people will live in the houses they built and eat
- 6:42the fruit of their own vineyards.
- 6:46Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and
- 6:49confiscate their vineyards, For my people will live as long as
- 6:54trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard
- 6:59won gains. They will not work in vain, and
- 7:03their children will not be doomed to misfortune, For they
- 7:07are people blessed by the Lord, and their children too will be
- 7:11blessed. I will answer them before they
- 7:14even call to me. While they are still talking
- 7:18about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers.
- 7:21The wolf and the lamb will feed together.
- 7:24The lion will eat hay like a cow, but the snakes will eat
- 7:28dust. In those days no one will be
- 7:32hurt or destroyed. On my holy mountain, I, the
- 7:36Lord, have spoken. You are a just God, a just God
- 7:54who stands with His arms open wide even when we are a
- 7:58rebellious people. Thank you for your faithfulness
- 8:02and ongoing love reaching out to us, and thank you even more for
- 8:08what you've done for us and Jesus in that.
- 8:11No longer is your wrath needing to be poured out on us, a
- 8:16rebellious people, but Jesus has won your favor and through His
- 8:22sacrifice that we celebrate. We are part of your family, we
- 8:28are your children, we are forgiven, and we are made right
- 8:32in your eyes. Thank you that you invite us to
- 8:36this New Jerusalem, to be your family and to live with you in
- 8:44your glory forever. You are just so much bigger than
- 8:50our minds can comprehend and we just fall at your feet and we
- 8:55worship you, our God. And we can only pray all of
- 9:02these things through the saving name of your Son, Jesus.
- 9:09Amen.
