- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. It's Barry Nixon alongside the
- 0:13one and only the master of ceremonies, the true Prince of
- 0:17the holiday season, and it's Jason Riley.
- 0:19Jay, great to see you. Before we go any further, yes,
- 0:22you look like you're about 14 years old.
- 0:24And it's it's quite amazing. Completely clean shaven.
- 0:27This is a this is a departure for you.
- 0:29But you kept the hair a little bit longer up top.
- 0:31I love it. You look like you're straight
- 0:33out of an Archie comic. Please explain to me what is
- 0:36that what you're doing next to? You're doing a live action,
- 0:38Archie. Yep, it's time.
- 0:39What's what's going on, bro? You guessed it.
- 0:42You guessed it, Barry. No, today I am clean shaven
- 0:45because yesterday evening I was and I sent, I texted you as I
- 0:48left. I was in your neck of the woods,
- 0:49sort of Liberty Village, lovely King West area, which I hadn't
- 0:53been to in a long time, getting new actor headshots done.
- 0:56Yeah. So as part of the bundle we had
- 1:00with the scruff, because I had the scruff.
- 1:01And then for the last few shots, we did the in a suit, cleaned
- 1:05up, slicked back, taken, taken off the 5:00 shadow for because
- 1:11I can, because I'm able to do it.
- 1:12I'm able to grow it back. And so we were able to get some
- 1:15shots that way. So now wait a minute.
- 1:16Clean shaven for a few days. Yeah.
- 1:18But you shaved on site like not in your home in the comfort of
- 1:22where everything is. You'd what was it electric razor
- 1:24or you just you brought a BIC with you.
- 1:27What happened? I brought my Gillette Mach 5 or
- 1:29whatever they're called now. Have like 27 blades and six on
- 1:32the back. So close.
- 1:34Yeah, and my Fusion, my whatever shaving cream, and it was great.
- 1:40Yeah. The Proglide, that was it.
- 1:42And then I had my aftershave because that's what you do.
- 1:45I'm an actor. I had to bring, I had to bring
- 1:47so many wardrobe changes to get ready.
- 1:49I had a hair product so I could put it in and, you know, style
- 1:52things up the way that I wanted to have it done and trust in the
- 1:55photographer to style things up the way she was going to have it
- 1:57done. And soon, Barry, I'll have some
- 1:59actor headshots to run by you as I narrow down to my favorites,
- 2:04because last time I had it done, we hadn't really reconnected
- 2:06yet. So you can get to participate in
- 2:08the friends and family favorite choice so.
- 2:10No, I certainly didn't. But rest.
- 2:12Assured you will. That is a grievous error that
- 2:15will be corrected on this round of actor headshots.
- 2:18OK, well, that sounds like the perfect way to kick off our show
- 2:21with a toast. Let's have our first shot in
- 2:23honor of all of this great news. And to Jay, you've never looked
- 2:27better. Here's to you, brother.
- 2:28And happy. At the time of this recording,
- 2:30it's still the holidays. So happy.
- 2:31We're one week out. Yeah.
- 2:33What are you drinking? I got Bushmills 12 year my
- 2:36friend. Oh, very nice.
- 2:37OK. Just re upped.
- 2:39Nice. I'm going to raise a glass of
- 2:41what you have deemed my favorite whiskey.
- 2:43Uh huh. Jamison Triple.
- 2:44Triple. Yes, I have deemed it.
- 2:46Cheers. Cheers.
- 2:50So the photographer also was the stylist.
- 2:52That's cool. Yes, because she she's a
- 2:54professional photographer and knows a lot about styling and
- 2:56can help me through that. I trust her judgement on
- 2:59outfits, what looks good on camera, you know, that kind of
- 3:02stuff. Because it's still still
- 3:03photography is very different than.
- 3:06Yes. Motion, the motion picture, as
- 3:08you know, but the biggest difference, it's still, you're
- 3:10actually still. So that's it.
- 3:12So it's not hidden in the name. It's it's there in the name.
- 3:14It's right up front. Still photography versus motion
- 3:17picture. So, Barry, I can take you
- 3:19through more detail. Well, you're an expert.
- 3:22You're an expert in both, as we know, and the audience already
- 3:26cannot wait for you to be on everyone's platform very soon.
- 3:30Can't say anything more than that, but I'm excited.
- 3:33We're excited, Barry. Speaking of, we're talking about
- 3:36movies, we're talking about TV. Why don't we pivot immediately
- 3:38to 4K corner? Big 4K corner this week?
- 3:41Yeah, we're overdue. Yeah.
- 3:43Do you want to start us off with some reviews like what are when
- 3:46our listeners and viewers watch this?
- 3:48If they're seeing when it comes out, it's like we're on, they're
- 3:50on the eve of Christmas. It's Christmas Day.
- 3:52It's something around there. So what are they picking up for
- 3:54very last minute gifts that has come to The Newsroom that you're
- 3:57enjoying? Well, one I just got yesterday,
- 3:59this was like a blind buy, and I don't usually do that, as you
- 4:02know, but I did it based on. Yeah, you're going.
- 4:05No, half of your collection are blind by, well, not half, but,
- 4:10you know, maybe 1/3. Yeah.
- 4:12Yeah, that's fair. Anyway, the movie's called
- 4:15Sinners. Are you familiar?
- 4:17I watched it on the would. Michael B Jordan.
- 4:19Yeah. Actually on the plane home from
- 4:20Japan. I watched it, yeah.
- 4:22OK, so then this is great. You've seen them, you've seen
- 4:25the movie. I just watched it for the first
- 4:26time yesterday in 4K. The transfer, the sound,
- 4:30everything was stunning and it was a really cool, different
- 4:33take on the vampire genre and I really loved how it wrapped up.
- 4:37And for those who have seen it, you probably know there is a
- 4:39sequel in the works, so it's interesting to see where they
- 4:42go. Yeah.
- 4:43Yeah, the lots of places they can go.
- 4:44We won't totally spoil it for anyone, but yeah, it was
- 4:47interesting. I enjoyed it.
- 4:49Like, I really did enjoy it. It was a really big deal.
- 4:52Like it kind of broke through. It's kind of changed, kind of
- 4:54got people thinking not about superheroes anymore, now into
- 4:57horror. Like the kids are really into
- 4:59the horror these days, so. Yeah.
- 5:01And this was a smart. It was a smart horror like.
- 5:03And I really like the characters.
- 5:05I like the fact that it was set in the early 19.
- 5:07Yeah. And Michael B Jordan playing two
- 5:09roles was pretty wild. I wasn't sure why.
- 5:12Like, it didn't seem to really factor in that he had to be
- 5:15playing two roles. Yeah, it unless I missed that.
- 5:19Clearly he was happy to do it. Yeah.
- 5:20Why share the why share the payday.
- 5:22You get the payday for both. Exactly.
- 5:24Yeah. And once again, he's in
- 5:25phenomenal shape. He's the only guy in the 19 foot
- 5:28during the Dust Bowl famines who has about 900 lbs of muscle on
- 5:32him. He just looked absolutely
- 5:34jacked, especially at the end of the movie.
- 5:35So good for him. Yeah, it's aspirational.
- 5:37It's nice to see that. But yes, a very different take
- 5:41on the vampire, you know, or that we've seen a million times.
- 5:45So this one was kind of cool. I heard that Ryan Coogler, who
- 5:49created it, also did Black Panther.
- 5:52So he's famous for Black Panther and Wakanda came up with a
- 5:55unique deal. I think he has licensed Sinners
- 5:58to Warner Brothers or whoever produced this movies.
- 6:00They have it for 20 years. They can do whatever they want
- 6:03with it, and then the IP reverts back to him, which is something
- 6:06which is like a whole new way of doing things, which is kind of
- 6:08cool. It's a way you get to own a
- 6:10piece of it and do what you want to be to another studio.
- 6:14Of course. Yeah, he's got his negotiation.
- 6:15But if if they're not treating it right or they want to let it
- 6:18rest or something, he can then take it somewhere else and do
- 6:20other things with a potentially redo it, turn it into comic
- 6:23books, novels, all that kind of stuff and prevent maybe it from
- 6:26it from getting too watered down.
- 6:27So it's like 20 years with them and then it comes back to him.
- 6:30That doesn't usually happen. You know, well, 20 years is a
- 6:33long time. I mean, that's a but still it.
- 6:36Wasn't a great payday when you're kind of maybe he's
- 6:38cruising into retirement or something or kind of that second
- 6:40stage and he'd boom all of a sudden you got this IP that did
- 6:43quite well and he could bring. It back.
- 6:45Yeah, exactly. Yeah, what's yours party?
- 6:48I'd say that's a 4.5 out of five.
- 6:50I really enjoyed it. I was totally glued to it.
- 6:52It wasn't, and I'm sure a lot of our viewers and listeners have
- 6:55already seen it because it's been out a while, but it it
- 6:58didn't exactly like truck along the beginning, like the first
- 7:01hour was pretty much setting up everything.
- 7:03We get to really know the characters, which is cool.
- 7:06And then that last hour is just, that's when things get a little
- 7:09wild. And yeah, it's just some really
- 7:12great performances and some nice little, I wouldn't call them
- 7:14twists, but I did like how it wrapped up at the very, very the
- 7:17very last part of the movie was like, oh, that's really cool.
- 7:20You kind of saw one of the characters, you know, fulfilling
- 7:23his dream. Yeah, which was pretty cool.
- 7:26Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 7:27And really interesting to kind of see like where the movie, you
- 7:29don't think it's going to go the way that it goes.
- 7:32And I know a million people have talked about this movie already.
- 7:34Yeah. So we're kind of stating the
- 7:36obvious. But yeah, you, you really kind
- 7:37of set that first hour kind of sets you up.
- 7:39You're like, we're going to go down this path.
- 7:40And then it's just like a really hard right or left.
- 7:43And that was cool. Not really spoiling anything.
- 7:46When they do the when they're playing the music and you get
- 7:49all the different genres of music and they incorporate all
- 7:51the musicians from like different time.
- 7:53Periods as well, yeah. Really cool, yeah.
- 7:56Yeah anyway, getting back to the 4K aspect of it, it looks
- 8:00sensational. It sounds amazing yeah.
- 8:03If you can get it at a deal, I would do it.
- 8:05Yeah, I was happy to. I, I think I got it for like 35
- 8:08bucks on Amazon. So I feel like that's that.
- 8:12That's a fair deal for a movie that definitely has some repeat
- 8:14value. Yeah.
- 8:15Terrific. Great.
- 8:17What about you, your 4K corner or do you want to do our next
- 8:19shot? First let's do 4K corner we'll
- 8:22do then we'll do our shot and then maybe we have time for RIP
- 8:24from the headlines. All damn right.
- 8:26I'll be brief and I'll hit the highlights cause I've got 2
- 8:29discs that I want to talk about, actually 2 franchises I want to
- 8:32talk about that both came to my door this weekend and I was
- 8:35really excited to receive both. The first hit on Amazon, a price
- 8:39that I wanted to pay for it, the 40th and anniversary 4K release
- 8:43of Back to the Future trilogy. Yeah, you can't go wrong with
- 8:46that movie. All three of those movies are
- 8:48great movies and just fun to watch.
- 8:51And I will say that the 4K transfer I've watched part of
- 8:53the first one is incredible. Like super clear.
- 8:56Do you own the non 40th anniversary?
- 8:58The one that came out like only a couple years ago, maybe the
- 9:0030th. I own the 30th anniversary so I
- 9:03feel a little riff. Your luck.
- 9:04Yeah. I feel like there's some
- 9:06additional stuff in the 40, but they also have individual steel
- 9:09books of this 40 release too. Yeah, looked at those.
- 9:13Yeah, but the price just hit. I think it was like 58 bucks or
- 9:1655. Bucks.
- 9:17I mean, you can't beat that. Yeah, that's a good price.
- 9:19I'm in. I don't think I've owned it
- 9:20since DVD. Like I didn't upgrade to
- 9:22Blu-ray. Oh, I'm enjoying it.
- 9:25It's great watching it. The first one with executive
- 9:27producer Alda Roma and we're going to make our way through
- 9:29that incredible transfer, like super clarity.
- 9:31This is the format to own it in. You get to see the, you know,
- 9:36the threads on the coats and the detail, the the bricks on the
- 9:39walls. That's what you want.
- 9:41To see all the stuff that you want, yeah.
- 9:43So based on what I've seen so far, 4.5 out of five, great
- 9:46transfer, great everything I wanted and I knew the quality of
- 9:49the movie. Second franchise straight from
- 9:51Arrow, purchased from their website in the US.
- 9:55My first direct purchase from Arrow, Yes.
- 9:58Second arrow purchase. Second arrow purchase, Yes,
- 10:01Spawn being the first. This one.
- 10:03Plenty of swag. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- 10:0690s trilogy. Wow.
- 10:07I'd seen one, I'd seen two. I've never seen three.
- 10:11I've watched now the first movie again.
- 10:13Executive producer, All the Roman.
- 10:14Watch that Saturday night, I believe Friday or Saturday.
- 10:17How does it hold up? Great movie like I really enjoy
- 10:20it lots of fun. It is a kids movie, but it's
- 10:22dark and it's fun. The thing is and I had to it
- 10:24hasn't been released on on blu-ray.com.
- 10:26I haven't seen a review for yet, but I've seen some on YouTube
- 10:30because I'm struggling with it because what I don't appreciate
- 10:33is what some of the other reviewers appreciate.
- 10:35I'm not sure if they just really love wanted to love it, but they
- 10:38didn't clean up the grain all that much.
- 10:40There are some scenes that are super cleaned up and like you
- 10:43can tell they're wearing rubber turtle suits, which is kind of
- 10:45what you expect in a 4K like it's almost cleaned up too much.
- 10:48But for the the most part, like the really dark scenes, like
- 10:50it's kind of cloudy and the deep blacks I didn't find there.
- 10:54But then I tuned in and I'm watching the reviews and they're
- 10:57going, this is what I love about it.
- 10:58It's exactly how I watched it on VHS.
- 11:00It it triggers all my memories and I'm like, but that's not
- 11:03what I want it for. I want grain.
- 11:05Spiffed up? Yeah.
- 11:06But all spiffed up. And so it's like they left.
- 11:09Especially the faces. Like April O'neil's raincoat.
- 11:13The yellow raincoat, perfectly clear, but her face is kind of
- 11:16grained out. And then when it's all darkness,
- 11:18I found it was. I didn't, I didn't love it so
- 11:20much. Like, I don't think the transfer
- 11:22held up. It's Dolby Vision.
- 11:23There's an Atmos track, but it kind of took me out of it
- 11:26because I was too. I was looking for it to get
- 11:28better and better. And there were moments of super
- 11:30clarity. But have you found this?
- 11:32Have you found this with an arrow release or anything?
- 11:34Yeah. Well, not with a necessarily
- 11:36arrow, but I have seen some inconsistent releases like and
- 11:39we could look to one example that I brought to your place
- 11:42that this was a record for you on going for walks during the
- 11:45movie. It was the sword and the
- 11:46sorcerer. The sorcerer had a very uneven
- 11:50release. There were some scenes, a
- 11:52handful that looked gorgeous, and then there were others that
- 11:55just looked muddy. Yeah.
- 11:57So that's. They.
- 11:58Told you to hear that for, didn't they?
- 12:00The turtles. Yeah, I just found it was.
- 12:02You're right. They did warn us at the
- 12:03beginning that some of the film elements had been lost or
- 12:08they've been left in somebody's garage for 25 years and water
- 12:11damaged. Whatever.
- 12:12You're right, they did preface it.
- 12:13They didn't do that, I guess with Ninja Turtles saying hey
- 12:15guys. They just kind of left it.
- 12:17And because people are talking about it and saying how it's not
- 12:21as cleaned up, two apparently is much better.
- 12:23I haven't watched it yet. I'm going to watch it.
- 12:25Yeah. But apparently.
- 12:25But then those people that love the grainy of one were like, the
- 12:29colors weren't perfect in two. They seemed a little brighter
- 12:31than I remember them. I don't know.
- 12:33Anyway, I really liked the movie.
- 12:35But you know, had I known? Sound.
- 12:37Was the sound OK? Yeah.
- 12:38The sound was good, not so much going on around you, but it
- 12:41wasn't at most track. So it was clear right.
- 12:43Back to the Future had much more like the clocks all around you
- 12:46at the beginning like that. That was at most up really well.
- 12:50Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I love that when all the
- 12:52turtles channels start to engage.
- 12:54Perfect. Yeah, Turtles.
- 12:55I'm given 3.5 out of five. Good movie, quality movie, but
- 12:58the transfer disappointing. I'll report back on the others
- 13:01as I get to them. I have a feeling you're not
- 13:03going to get too far into the third one.
- 13:05I heard that that that is good, probably holding steady at a 1.5
- 13:09out of five for most people who have been able to get through it
- 13:12because it's they decide to go back in time to like 17th
- 13:16century Japan and become samurais.
- 13:18And apparently it looks exceedingly cheap.
- 13:21Like even less expensive than the first one.
- 13:25Or yeah, anyway, I look forward to you, you know, telling me.
- 13:29I've heard about that one. I've heard it described as not
- 13:31terrible on the sights of people that really like these movies,
- 13:35so I'm going to have to go over quite an open mind.
- 13:37But before I do that, I think we're not going any further
- 13:39until we do. Shot #2 Jameson Triple triple
- 13:42for me. Yeah, and I'm sticking with, you
- 13:44know, the the good stuff. In your honor, Jay, here's to
- 13:47you. Cheers.
- 13:50Now let's be honest, did you forget the name of it?
- 13:53Is that what you said the good stuff was?
- 13:5512 year. Yeah, I know, but for a moment
- 13:58you forgot, didn't you? Yeah.
- 14:00I like to call it the good stuff.
- 14:02In your honor, good Sir, let's raise a glass of this amber
- 14:06gold. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:07And then let's move past it quickly cuz it'll come.
- 14:11It'll come to me. We got time for one RIP from the
- 14:13headline. Shall I go to the magical phone
- 14:16that you sent? Cuz you are our RIP from the
- 14:18headlines guy. I haven't.
- 14:20Got we? We got time for that, but before
- 14:22we do, if we had to shoehorn in one quick thing, just super
- 14:26quick. Linda and I on Saturday night
- 14:28went to Rebel Nightclub and we got to see $0.50 live in
- 14:32concert. It happened, it happened.
- 14:35He was he was great. One thing I will say for those
- 14:38of you who might be considering going to Rebel, this event was
- 14:41at minimum 20% oversold. It was literally fighting hard
- 14:47through the crowd, even just to get to the bathroom, and I was
- 14:49being squished on both sides. Like it was like being in like a
- 14:53Brazilian soccer stadium that was about to burst.
- 14:56It was not cool. That was one thing.
- 14:58I will say, however, he was great.
- 15:00OK, let's get to Rep from the headlines.
- 15:02My God, that's awful. That's an awful.
- 15:03I'm just saying that as a as a cautionary thing if you're going
- 15:06to rebel. One other thing is when we got
- 15:08there, immediately, the security was accepting bribes right away.
- 15:13They're like 20 bucks. You want to skip the line, 20
- 15:15bucks you want to skip the line. Of course we paid.
- 15:16We wanted to skip the line. It's phrasing out, but it has
- 15:19this kind of air of scumminess as soon as you pull up there
- 15:23with stuff like that, and then it's like you can pay to get in
- 15:25faster and then you get in there and then you're crushed because
- 15:28they sold at least 20% more than they should.
- 15:31That's anyway he was great. That's great.
- 15:33Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the whole episode on $0.50.
- 15:36Not too long. Ago.
- 15:37Here we go. We're going to do this.
- 15:38RIP from the headlines, Barry. We do the headline, we give you
- 15:41the news. We only read the headline.
- 15:42We don't go any further beyond that.
- 15:44This one is the ultimate Christmas ghost story.
- 15:47How 1980s horror The Woman in Black terrified Britain.
- 15:51Right. And they did a remake of that, I
- 15:53believe, with Daniel Ratcliffe many years later.
- 15:55I've never. Heard of this movie, The Woman
- 15:57in Black? Yeah.
- 15:58OK, well how did it terrify Britain, do you think?
- 16:01Well, I think it was only in Britain at the time, so that's
- 16:05probably part of why it just scared those folks.
- 16:08But, you know, I think people were a lot easier to scare in
- 16:11the 90s J and especially around the holidays.
- 16:13They were skittish. You want?
- 16:15Yeah, they were skittish. You know, everyone's kind of on
- 16:16edge during the holidays. You know, there's pressure.
- 16:19You got family dinners, you got to perform.
- 16:21This is true. You had no no social media, no
- 16:24phones. You don't know who was coming
- 16:25and going when anybody you had to could knock on the door or
- 16:28call. It was very terrifying.
- 16:30But actually, what's funny that you say when back in the day
- 16:33when you used to get someone knocking at the door, it was
- 16:35kind of exciting and everyone would go to the door.
- 16:37And now if someone knocks at your door, no one's fucking,
- 16:40you're looking at the ring lights or whatever the the ring
- 16:42camera. You want to see who it is.
- 16:43You're like, who the hell is that?
- 16:45Yeah, exactly. Because nobody has any business
- 16:47coming up to a door or phoning you for that matter, that you
- 16:50don't know and aren't expecting. Whereas that's very different.
- 16:52And maybe that's what made this the ultimate Christmas ghost
- 16:56story. That's that's why is it the
- 16:58ultimate? Did it take place at Christmas?
- 17:00The Woman in Black? Do you know?
- 17:01Apparently apparently it. Did.
- 17:02It's very, very sure of yourself.
- 17:06You know what? We should check out the Daniel
- 17:08Radcliffe remake of The Woman. And why did they do that?
- 17:12I don't know. I believe it was in like kind of
- 17:13like the teens, if I'm remembering correctly.
- 17:17But I, I do remember that he was involved in that.
- 17:19I've never heard a man in black. I believe it is the woman in
- 17:21black. OK, even though it's Daniel
- 17:23Radcliffe, Radcliffe, he's he wasn't in the black, He wasn't
- 17:26the woman in black. He was a friend of or adjacent
- 17:29to the woman in black. Scaring people as well maybe?
- 17:32I guess I don't know. I don't know, I don't know.
- 17:34But that's why we don't go behind the headline or beyond
- 17:36that line. Yes, that's and so I think we
- 17:39got to it, Barry, here we are. Another great episode, huge 4K
- 17:43review. If you guys are checking this
- 17:45out, our lovely listeners and viewers sinners, the Teenage
- 17:50Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy. Look for a sale on that one and

- 17:54of those to your collection. Maybe check out The Woman in
- 17:57Black, either the original or the remake with Daniel
- 18:00Radcliffe. Sir Daniel Radcliffe.
- 18:03I know he's really, but maybe one day he will be.
- 18:06I think he's on the path. Yeah, this is good.
