- 2:37this week's show, So today's program is from May to nineteenth of nineteen fifty
- 2:43seven, and the title is the Michael Meani Mirage matter. I wonder if
- 2:49people who made up titles for the lineup episodes wrote the title for that one.
- 2:54Anyway, here now is yours truly Johnny Dollar from Hollywood. It's time
- 3:01now for George Reid speaking. Oh good morning, George is for sure the
- 3:09birds are singing, bees or buzzing. And there are whales in the Gulf
- 3:14of Mexico. Oh there are What do you know anything about whales, Johnny?
- 3:16I can't say that. I do, I don't need to do I
- 3:21Zippy. Can you go down there? Well? Yeah, sure, but
- 3:23what's it all about? I told you a whale? Come on, you
- 3:27people didn't ensure it? Sure, oh, Johnny, of course we didn't.
- 3:30But we did write a voter policy covering eighty pounds of ambergris Chris comes
- 3:35from a whale, very valuable used in the making of perfume. Oh yeah,
- 3:38we're used with the policy. A week ago, yesterday the stuff disappeared.
- 3:42How much did you cover it? For twenty thousands? And our agent
- 3:45down there is w. C. Owen got it? Owen? Huh,
- 3:47yes, ye. You shouldn't have any trouble locating the stuff. No,
- 3:52why not? Because and I quote mister Owen, ambergris smells worse than a
- 3:55hound. Dog, which is kind of scunt Bob Bailey and the exciting adventures
- 4:08of the Man with the action packed expense accounts America's fabulous free lance insurance Investigator,
- 4:13Yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and no act one of Yours, Truly
- 4:21Johnny Dollars. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollars to Floyd's of England,
- 4:40American Branch Office four four three North fifteenth Street, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 4:44The following is an account of expenses in encourage during my investigation of the Michael
- 4:47Meani mirage matter expense account at a one one hundred and sixty eight dollars transportation
- 4:57from Hartford to the Markham Hotel in Gulfport, Mississippi. I called WC On,
- 5:00the agent who sold the policy covering the ammigriss Half an hour later,
- 5:04I opened the door of my room to a middle aged man wearing a brown
- 5:06seersucker suit. Mister Dalla right, sure is John Mstrong gon dang, but
- 5:15I'm not gonna pull around about this. I'm in a mess. You know.
- 5:17My only chance getting out of it? Well, I'll do whatever I
- 5:20can. Mister On, you just find that ammigras and man, please find
- 5:24it within the next forty eight hours by the rush two reasons when the emmigriss
- 5:29was stolen off the freight platform to train depot DA Poor yesterday was packed for
- 5:32shipping, had enough dries around less even to two hours, but no more.
- 5:35Uh huh, I wan't the second race. That might mean me to
- 5:40see owner of the Ambigrisans real good client of mine. I promised him.
- 5:43You'd roky still for sure. Well, I appreciate your confidence, mister on
- 5:46names w C. Mister around here sounds too high for rooting for an insurance
- 5:50sales Okay, w see, but what's this from? I mean he's so
- 5:54worried about the ammigrants is covered with twenty thousand, he told me learn it
- 5:58worth a lot more than that since support it was something up here sixty thou
- 6:01pretty rare stuff. Matter of fact, this first time I've ever heard of
- 6:04anybody find an ammigration to go go fishing out of the water. Meanie.
- 6:09Oh you know how it worked for him named Billy Fisher? Did mean he
- 6:12buy it from Fisher. Didn't have to blown to mister Meanie right off.
- 6:15Oh well, of course Fisher was for him, which mean he lets out
- 6:19his fishing boats to fellas which ain't got no boat of their own, or
- 6:23he man change to get for him. He rents him out so you don't
- 6:26run him. He lets him out o share. But I mean he puts
- 6:28up the boat, gas nets everything, and whoever runs the boat, well
- 6:30he whatever he catches, he blows. Miss mean ah. Because Fisher happened
- 6:35to be a Meani's boat when he found the emigres, it automatically became Meani's
- 6:40property. Huh. Now you've got a boat. Did Fisher know what it
- 6:44was or the value of it when he turned it over to meeting? He
- 6:46had to ask him about this? Yeah? I plan to, but first
- 6:49I'm like to have a talk with this Mike Meani. I'm way ahead of
- 6:51your dollar. I called him me and here right after you called me,
- 6:55he's waiting for how far is he lived from here? Boat? Three or
- 6:57four miles down to be thrown toward blocks me place called Missisippi City. Mississippi
- 7:01City, but don't let the name pool you. It goes there except a
- 7:04couple of stores, fishing boat land, the train depot. It sounds like
- 7:09a real quiet place. It is. It's also where this whole thing started.
- 7:13And where I hope it finishes, and the sooner the b A few
- 7:19minutes later, we were driving east along the coast. Ahead of us we
- 7:24could see Mississippi City's one and only landmark, a long wooden pier extending far
- 7:28out into the Gulf anchor near the end of it with several small fishing boats.
- 7:32We passed the Meani General Store and the Meani Fish Market, then turned
- 7:35into a narrow driveway. I'm not sure what kind of a house that expected
- 7:40Mike Meani to live in, but this certainly wasn't it. It was too
- 7:43small and they needed a coat of painting. We got out and on led
- 7:46the way to decide. The horse mis meanie you know, doesn't look like
- 7:59it. No, No, he's here. Listen what my name of sure?
- 8:03Heavy? Any? Yes, I mean another man here side the whole
- 8:07United States? And I believe w C Boy, you sure took your sweet
- 8:13time getting here. Yeah, maybe just fast we could miss me. Is
- 8:18this the fellow I will tell you about, mister Johnny Dollar? Both of
- 8:22you come inside. That's it the morning you mean, sit down and so
- 8:28far out? Just lower uh lower myself into this this uh uh chair there?
- 8:39Yeah, no, then you're a detective one dollar? Well, welln
- 8:45me ain't giving me an answer. You're a detective where you win a detective?
- 8:50Now? Which is? I have an insurance investigator right now I'm being
- 8:54paid to find eighty pounds of ambigrants that you lost. Loss laws. He
- 8:58didn't mean nothing saying that you wash up, you road agents, mister mian
- 9:03Allah that stuff was stolen. You hear seed right in abroad lighted day.
- 9:09You're sure, I'm sure eighty pounds of ambergrists didn't get up and walk off
- 9:13by itself. Yes, me too. You know exactly where was it when
- 9:16it was stolen? Sitting in a box I had built for it, a
- 9:20special box box smellprew twenty five dollars. Oh, shut up. I was
- 9:26sending it to Nolans, to a fellow i'd heard might be able to sell
- 9:30it for man. The box was on the platform right outside the American Express
- 9:35office of the depot here Insissippi City. Boy, you ever take a bad
- 9:41fall out of your crib? No, you ignorant? In Tuscaloosa, Alabama
- 9:46where you think that depot was, goven and Gulf Court. No, it
- 9:50couldn't never do business there, Okay, okay, so wrong, But that's
- 9:54the first time you ever admitted it. Had the box been checked in at
- 10:00American Express? I mean, had the break been paid dollars? Yes,
- 10:03that's what I mean. It's grounds and ignorant, no good. And had
- 10:07it been paid mister meaning? Oh it had? Why not? Because the
- 10:09rat I trusted with the Ambergris and sent down to the station to see it
- 10:15got on the train. Yeah, he'd promise, he'd give his word.
- 10:20He wouldn't take his eyes off that stuff for one second. Not dirty north
- 10:26shine. Are you okay? Miss meaning? No? But you shit down?
- 10:33You make me nervous. W s. Yes, there was a time
- 10:39I think of that TEJ, that stupid nephew of mine. Well you know
- 10:43what he done, Dollar, He spotted something more interesting to look after than
- 10:48twenty thousand dollars worth of ambigrat ambigrit Okay, oh, wuc told no,
- 10:56I didn't know, sir, mister Dollar. He's just clever. Well,
- 11:01anyway, according to TJ, this young female pulled up in an open car
- 11:05across the road from where he was at, and it wasn't until he got
- 11:09up close that he could see that she was wearing the scrapless baby suit.
- 11:15You see, mister dollar, TG knows what TJ thought. You you'll keep
- 11:20your mouth shut WI whatever. Well, while TJ was investigating the situation,
- 11:28someone made off of the ambigress. That's right, right, What about the
- 11:31other people at the station? There weren't no other people there. How about
- 11:35the baggage clerk and the passing generation? Where were they? The Sam Burrows
- 11:39is the only man that works down in the deept and he was busy selling
- 11:43some woman to pull m and take it to mean, for how long did
- 11:46TJ talk to the girl? Just a couple of minutes according to him that
- 11:50you want to ask him yourself. He works at the All Line Cafe and
- 11:52goup for all right, thanks, well, we're sure having much to go
- 11:56on, You got nothing to go on, so you might as well give
- 12:01me my twenty thousand head back up north with a blow. Not yet,
- 12:05mister meaning, you got forty five dollars at the end of that time.
- 12:09I want my insurance money. Money you don't see that I have with mister
- 12:15w c Owned. You're going to be sorry, you know what I mean?
- 12:18Mean, yes, I know. I one didn't say another word until
- 12:26we pulled out a fat Mike Meanie's driveway, and I turn left, going
- 12:30on down the beach toward Bloxing. I suppose you think I should have stood
- 12:35up to him little more. Huh? No, I figured you had your
- 12:39reasons for not wanting to get into an argument with him. See those boats
- 12:43off the end of the pier, small fishing boats, huh they belong to
- 12:46Meani. He's also got money invested in half the business place along the beach.
- 12:50You know what that means? Dollar? Yeah, Well, where I
- 12:54come from, he'd pull a lot of weight, that's it. And anybody
- 12:56he could dry on that, well, one word from him and my clients
- 13:00would be screaming for me to cancel their policies like that, just like,
- 13:05hey, where are we going, Billy Fishers? This way is? This
- 13:09year is the Barton house he lives in. Come on, okay, boy,
- 13:18okay, easy, how he's easy? That's just you know, Miss
- 13:26Harvey. Oh but my goodness, miss Owen, this is an unaccepted plaguer
- 13:31for sure, I thank him. Uh. This year is mister Johnny Dollar,
- 13:35Miss Harvey, need to know you, mister Dollar, wouldn't you like
- 13:37to come in and sit down? No? Thanks, we really don't have
- 13:41much time. Oh, miss Dollars an insurance investigator. Right now, he
- 13:45wants to have a talk with Billy Fisher providing his whole wy. Sure he
- 13:48is you find him down the side there, Oh, but he is when
- 13:52he's with Jene Higgy miss Owen. Oh you know her father readed that old
- 13:58Niller place again. Girl, look got into that trouble? Who is what
- 14:03kind of trouble? Well, this happened when the Higginses were down here two
- 14:07years ago. Billy and Jane have always been sweet on each other. But
- 14:11being as Billy and Billy and doesn't have fun if you don't not even the
- 14:15job def fishing want of miss Meani's boat with James Todd just put his foot
- 14:20down, But didn't mean you think Billy knows her. He's not until o
- 14:24man Hi can get sheriff. You're not still in the top, James,
- 14:28and finding the Higgins is just typed up. They didn't come back until just
- 14:31three weeks ago. Seven. How old is the Higgins girl now? Eighteen
- 14:35nineteen and she hasn't changed one bed in those two years? No, such,
- 14:41he's just over here all the time. She will be some purpose there
- 14:48they are now Lily James come over here in a dinner. Someone wants to
- 14:54see you, good Billy. Now that she has mister Dolls, why Dotty,
- 15:01Miss Higgins, mister Dollan and miss Owen along as Billy. I wonder
- 15:07if I could speak you alone from a moment. Yes, would you want
- 15:11to talk to me about mister Meanie and the ammigrants you found? Oh?
- 15:16That? Where did you find it? Billy? I'm near cat Island,
- 15:18floating in the East Channel. Did you know what it was as soon as
- 15:22you saw it? No, sir, not exactly. But I read a
- 15:26story once about a fellow that found some ambergriss. He should have made a
- 15:30lot of money off. So you weren't going to take any chances, and
- 15:31you haulted the board. Is that right? Yes, there's something like that.
- 15:35Billy. You realized that anything you caught or salvage with that voat belonging
- 15:41to mister Meanie, it wasn't yours. You realized I didn't choose well,
- 15:45not right then. I didn't know, sir. He'd give me some kind
- 15:48of a contract A signed and I started working for him, but I never
- 15:50read it. Well. What happened when you put in at the period that
- 15:52night. Oh that Chris Stillinger. Mister Meani's checked it. He spied the
- 15:56ambigris right off, and he made me turn it over to him. Was
- 16:00the last time you saw it? Yes? Yes, that was it?
- 16:03Okay, Bill, that's all I had on my mind. Well, that's
- 16:07all I mean, no questions about whether I swapped it from the train station
- 16:11or not. Would you tell me if you had? He's crazy something pick
- 16:17No, I have to saying goodbye to Jane Higgins and taking a rain check
- 16:26on a dinner invitation from missus Harvey ow And and I drove back to town.
- 16:30I was tired, and I was discouraged, and I needed a good
- 16:33night's sleep, so I had him dropping off at the hotel. At the
- 16:37desk, I found a message to call long distance operator nineteen. A few
- 16:40minutes later the call was completed. George read speak Hi, George, thought
- 16:44it was you. Johnny? Where are in blazes? If you've been I've
- 16:47been trying to get hold of you. All have to know, oh something
- 16:48important? No, I was just curious about the weather down there. Oh
- 16:52well it's great, great warm, And on to Johnny And Okay, George,
- 16:55what's happening? One of the boys upstairs got window, that Amberger's glass.
- 16:57So he just happens to have a who's an ichtheologist? Well believe for
- 17:00him, Johnny thiscktheologist says that Ambergris comes only from the sperm whale, and
- 17:06there has never been a sperm whale alive that would be caught dead swimming in
- 17:08the Gulf of Mexico. What you follow me, Johnny, I think so
- 17:15it there's never been a sperm whale in the gulf, then that stuff you
- 17:18people in short couldn't have been. But George, if it wasn't Ambergris,
- 17:23what was it? I don't know unless you find it. We're stuck for
- 17:26twenty thousand bucks only smokes Act two off yours truly, Johnny Dollar in a
- 17:48moment. Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star there stands
- 17:53yet another flag for each of the fifty states. New Mexico's flag is an
- 17:59ancient zea sun symbol, a red circle on a field of yellow, radiating
- 18:03from four points, which we might indicate as north, east, south,
- 18:07and west are four parallel lines. Four was a sacred number of Zea,
- 18:14the number most often used by the giver of all good gifts. The earth
- 18:18had four main directions, each with its own gifts. The year had four
- 18:23seasons, each with a different offering for mankind. The day had four faces
- 18:30sunrise, noontime, evening, and night. Life had its four divisions childhood,
- 18:37youth, manhood, and old age. Everything in life and nature was
- 18:41bound together in a circle, the circle of life and love, without beginning
- 18:47and without end. And in this great brotherhood of all things, man had
- 18:52four obligations. He must develop a strong body, a clear mind, and
- 18:56a pure spirit. Fourth, and most to the welfare of his people.
- 19:03From this simple symbol, the Zia Sun, we read the legend of a
- 19:07wonderful philosophy. The plank's colors of flaming red and golden orange represent the banners
- 19:14of Ferdinand and Isabella, which were carried by Columbus across the Atlantic. New
- 19:18Mexico's state flag, the flag of the forty seventh state to enter the Union,
- 19:23was adopted on March nineteenth, nineteen twenty five. Now Act two of
- 19:30Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and the Michael Meani Murrii Matters. After talking to
- 19:45George Reed and learning that there was considerable doubt in his mind concerning the origin
- 19:51of the ambergris Mike Mehdi had insured with Reed's company. I called WC on,
- 19:55the agent who had issued the policy to come down to the hotel.
- 19:57He was a shocked and surprise eyes as I said, Yeah, yeah,
- 20:02I just can't believe it. Yeah, well that's true, at least according
- 20:06to a man who's studied the habits of sperm whales for years. Those kinds
- 20:11of whales never come into the doll not, according to him. If ambigrants
- 20:15isn't, what is it? You see, your guess is as good as
- 20:18mine. But whatever it is, it isn't worth twenty thousand dollars. Oh
- 20:22yes, sir, yah, yeah, you don't think Missu Meani is trying
- 20:26to pull fast? When do you trying to defraud the company? Oh?
- 20:30No, I dot it. He has all the money he'll need for a
- 20:33while, that's for sure. Tell me WC. Did me and he have
- 20:37the emigrants analyzed before he asked you to ensure it? In fact, he
- 20:41did even showed me a letter which said that the stuff was You remember who
- 20:45made the analysis for him? You can't. It's over BILOXI don't recall his
- 20:49name off hand, but he signed that letter he gave mister Meani. Okay,
- 20:53first thing in the morning, we'll take another trip out to Meanie's place.
- 20:56In the meantime, don't mention any of this to anyone, which no,
- 21:00no, Amal Jerry. Yeah, I should have checked on that,
- 21:04Tim. I shouldn't have, and I shouldn't have been so anxious to take
- 21:08this to mean as Ward. Well, we all make mistakes, not biggeres
- 21:14like this, Johnny. We just got to find this stuff. Because we
- 21:17don't, we'll never know if it was Ambergers or not, will it?
- 21:19No, WC, we won't. I felt sorry for all. I knew
- 21:26as well as he did that the company might recall his franchise unless we couldn't
- 21:30prove it was ambigrants that had been insured, and at the moment I was
- 21:33quite sure we couldn't do that. The thanks morning, the coffee shop was
- 21:37crowded, so I started up toward the center of town, looking for another
- 21:41place to have breakfast. I was about four or five blocks from the hotel
- 21:44when I heard someone calling me, Johnny, m oh, oh, yeah,
- 21:49good morning, Jane. Well, what are you doing in town so
- 21:53bright and early? I'm going on a shopping screen. A girl can't get
- 21:57married just anyone thing, you know? Oh? Oh, well I was
- 22:04a lucky guy. Who do you think Billy Fisher? I certainly wouldn't marry
- 22:08anyone else. Well, Jane, it's none of my business. But I
- 22:12heard you had my father's dad said against Billy, didn't she say? Yeah,
- 22:17something like that. Well he is, but there's much he can do
- 22:19about it. I'm over eighteen guys. He's going to change his mind about
- 22:23Billy, I hope. So he's going to be real sorry he ever treats
- 22:27Billy the way he has. Jane. Look, I haven't had breakfast yet.
- 22:30How about joinning me for a couple of coffee? Oh? I love
- 22:33to where we go? Oh? How about over there the all night cafe?
- 22:37All right? Oh no, I mean do you know what time,
- 22:42mister dollar? Just ten after nine? Why? We had just remembered something
- 22:48in party? You made a helps funny. I crossed the street and end
- 23:00of the all night cafe. Behind the counter wearing a white T shirt,
- 23:03apron and a Valentino type hairdoo was a man about twenty three years old.
- 23:08Oh will it be? How an eights of coffee? They want their make
- 23:12over? Reason? Okay, so kidding me, I ain't eating them,
- 23:17dude, half nice with Pete. You want your coffee now? Yeah?
- 23:21Please? Do you happen to know a man named Mike? Mean? He
- 23:27I should? He's my uncle? Oh well then you must be t J.
- 23:32That's right? Yeah? How come you know me? I was talking
- 23:36to your uncle yesterday. My name is Doll Well yeah, yeah, he
- 23:40told me if you come around, I can tell you anything you want to
- 23:41know. Well, what happened at the deep at that afternoon? TJ?
- 23:45Can you already tell you that? I'd like to hear your silence when you
- 23:48met to tell I was sitting there waiting to put that box in three o
- 23:51three and the ship gal drove up. What happened then? Man? She
- 23:55gave me just about the biggest come on I ever did get. So you
- 23:59left the freight flat farm and crossed the road to talk to her? Who
- 24:02is shoot, mister dollar? I didn't see nothing wrong in doing that.
- 24:03To was nobody around? I must have been yeah, yeah, raycon sue,
- 24:10But I sure didn't see you. P J said that girl tell you
- 24:14her name? Yeah? What is it? Betty Miller? Benny Lou Miller?
- 24:18Yeah he look miss No, no, wait, have you seen her
- 24:21since then? For sure? When was that? We're just there out in
- 24:25the street. She's a girl you was talking to. I finished my ham
- 24:32and eggs and walked back to the hotel. Owen was waiting for me.
- 24:34But before we drove to Mike Meanie's house, we made a stop at the
- 24:37railroad depot. The agent remembered everything that had happened that afternoon. In the
- 24:41afternoon the ambagers had been stolen, including the name of the woman who had
- 24:45purchased the pullman ticket to Memphis at the time of the theft. After thanking
- 24:48Sam for his help, we went on to the meeting place morning. Shake
- 24:55yourselves down, Thank hill, Dolla, dollah you fine, miamigress. Yeah,
- 25:00now, sir, but I think I know who has it? You

- 26:10knew. It's oh my soul, mister dollar. I planned the whole thing
- 26:14and put Billy up to it and bought the pullman ticket. Yes, I
- 26:18still had it, meaning to turn it in for the money, but just
- 26:19having had a chance to get down to the day thot. Tell me,
- 26:22Missus Harvey, how did you know that TJ would leave the Ambergris when he
- 26:26did? Everybody around there know TJ's weekns for girls. Wonder to me hasn't
- 26:32been locked up long? Well? It was a beautiful John. You timed
- 26:37it just like a profession. Okay, God, thank you for the compliment.

- 26:56No? No, thanks for serving you have? Well, I I guess
- 27:02that's part of my job too. What did he do with the Ambergers?
- 27:06I didn't go into Atland a man. They're going to sell it for I
- 27:10see my show looked like you lost your best friend. Yeah, well I
- 27:15I ran into chain this morning. She was going shopping for her tusseau.
- 27:19I know, missus Harvey. If it turns out that that isn't ambers,
- 27:25Oh they still get married no matter what, mister Donald, If not nolla

- 28:03that's what I want. I want to see you and James. Yeah,
- 28:07you don't be ridiculous. Ridiculous, Well, and I said, now if
- 28:11you don't get off my property for you woman, you stole? How did
- 28:15you know I stole anything? I know because this here worm of an insurance
- 28:21agent wouldn't have a customer lift on the beach unless he told me. Well,
- 28:26he told you wrong. Then it took that amber bore but it belonged
- 28:30to him all the time. Woman. Ain't that right? Mister? Yeah?
- 28:36Sure is? At least it is if it was Ambergury timber Gris right
- 28:41enough. I call that Kimels. But he quit his job a couple of
- 28:45days ago, couldn't final record. He middle don't need no record. It's
- 28:49amber Gris and it's mine. You think that you're you're seeing a mirrage.
- 28:56Tell him, mister, if this is some kind it will low down here
- 29:00he's trick. It's no trick, mister, meaning missus. Harvey showed me
- 29:03the contract you have with them. Where what's that got to do with him
- 29:07stealing the Ambigris? Just this. The contract states that all fish and fish
- 29:11products and by products caught or saying while using your boat belong to you.
- 29:15That's right, exactly right too. So the ambergris dozens well, No,
- 29:22sir, Ambergris comes from a whale. And the whale is not a fish,
- 29:29It's a mammal doll. No Dollar, you born. They say that
- 29:41young love can work miracles, and I guess it must be true, because
- 29:44later that day a huge sperm whale was sighted about three miles offshore near the
- 29:48cat Island shadow moving. As I've always said, you can't figure whales any
- 29:52more than you can people. Expense of con total including hotel, villain,
- 29:56transportation back to hybrid four hundred and twenty dollar and ten cents, yours,
- 30:00truly, Johnny Dollar. Now here is our star to tell you about next
- 30:11week's story. Next week the wayward truck matter. And I'll leave you to
- 30:15figure that one out for yourself. But join us, won't you? Yours
- 30:18truly, Johnny Dollars, yours truly, Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey,

- 30:36directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard in our cast were Virginia, Greg Jeanette Nolan,
- 30:41G Stanley Jones, Junius Matthews, Gil Stratton, Dick Crenna, and
- 30:44John Dayner. Musical supervision is by Amrico Marino. Be sure to join us
- 30:48next week, same time and station for another exciting story of yours, truly,
- 30:55Johnny Dollar. This is speaking Johnny Dollar has come to use as the
- 31:15worldwide facilities of the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Welcome back.
- 31:32Well, Michael Meanie might be able to boss around a lot of people,
- 31:37but he can't boss around biology. A nice little twist there, good
- 31:44relaxing episode, even if it was a bet stereotypical of the South. Though
- 31:48I will say the only thing that wasn't stereotypical was that remark inside the restaurant
- 31:56when Johnny ask if he could happened and was told, well, you wanted
- 32:01that way, I won't be eating it, or something to that effect.
- 32:06But at any rate, but I would say that would not be your typical
- 32:10reaction. But I guess it kind of depends on the place, all right.
- 32:15Well, onto some listener comments and feedback, and Johnny receive an email
- 32:23from Sparky regarding the ming toy Murphy matter. It was nice to get a
- 32:29lighter, funnier story. Em and O'Brien would never do that. The best
- 32:32drama slash action series show throws in a funny episode now and then. Well,
- 32:37thanks so much for the comment. I think that what we saw with
- 32:43m and O'Brien, a lot of it was reactive. The previous Johnny dwler
- 32:52Charles Russell, had a lot of the flippancy and jokes that didn't necessarily play
- 32:58well. I think partially because of the script, partially because of the top
- 33:02of actor that Charles Russell was, and so there was I think this reactive
- 33:08idea. You know, we need a serious detective drama, and you really
- 33:13don't find a whole lot of humor in the Edmund O'Brien Johnny Dollar stories,
- 33:19unless it's kind of the cynical Gallows humor top of thing, such as in
- 33:24the Singapore arson case where O'Brien urges that your company will get its money,
- 33:32which you know in his letter to the insurance company, which is really what
- 33:37matters to you, and it didn't happen much. Under Jahnline, the reaction
- 33:42and the focus was on being more matter of fact and the show could stand
- 33:47up in the era of Dragnet. The ironic thing about that, of course,
- 33:52was that Dragnet worked in quite a bit of humor into its stories.
- 33:57They didn't have many straight humorist episodes, but they would always tend to try
- 34:01and light in the blow of some of their heavier programs with a little humor,
- 34:07particularly at the beginning. And I have to admit that I do,
- 34:09also, like Sparky, have an affinity for action series that work in an
- 34:15appropriate amount of humor. One of my favorite series in that vein is,
- 34:21of course I Spy with Robert Colp and Bill Cosby. Certainly, it's not
- 34:27laugh a minute, and they've got plenty of action and tention, but the
- 34:30two have great chemistry, and that leads to some very humorous, very fun
- 34:36moments. I will say that humor can be a difficult thing to manage in
- 34:40a lot of action or otherwise dramatic series. As you study in particular science
- 34:46fiction series, some of the worst episodes are those where they decide to do
- 34:52a comedy, but they do their comedy in such a way that the characters
- 34:57act completely out of character. Top balancing act. But if you can do
- 35:01that as a program and you can keep your characters consistent and still have humor
- 35:07out of it. It's definitely something that I enjoy and appreciate your comments.
- 35:15Also have some comments regarding episode thirteen forty five, the Melancholy Memory Matter.
- 35:22Jim says, I had trouble making out most of the conversation in the Little
- 35:27House in Mexico. Glad that Johnny restated things and clarified the whole medical deal.
- 35:32Well, I will admit that that episode, Melancholony Memory and the Me
- 35:38and Toy Murphy matter were some of the poorer sound quality programs that we have
- 35:46had, And thankfully the number of programs with the later releases and more refined
- 35:57copies out there that sound really bad are much less than they used to be
- 36:06on Johnny Dollar, but they're still out there and we'll run into them from
- 36:10time to time. So sorry that didn't have great sound quality, but that
- 36:15is one point where some restating definitely comes in handy. And some more comments
- 36:21just on Johnny Dollar in general. Aloma says, love my Johnny Dollar,
- 36:24keep him coming, Bob says love Johnny Dollar, and Pastor Lisa says,
- 36:35I love the five part serials. I've been tuning in for a year now
- 36:37and I absolutely love your podcast. Keep up the great work. Philip says,
- 36:42great story, and Samantha says, regarding the omnibus edition of The McCormick
- 36:47Matter, totally just made my day at them. Well, I'm glad that
- 36:52you enjoyed that, and I hope you'll enjoyed the programs that are to come
- 36:58with the omnibule shows. All right, Well, that will actually do it
- 37:04for today. We will be back tomorrow with Dragnet and next Friday Johnny Dollar,
- 37:10as well as next Sunday and next Tuesday with the omnibus edition and then
