Latest / Xenomania / Phantasm V Ravager - Episode 15
Transcript
- 0:02intro: No, be afraid.
- 0:06Be very afraid.
- 0:15Kearns: Function with this installment is just the subtitle, Ravager.
- 0:22Ryan : If
- 0:22Kearns: else about the movie is great.
- 0:25It fits.
- 0:26Why does it fit?
- 0:27Ryan : I feel like the title fits, let's see here.
- 0:28Hold on.
- 0:29We got one, two Lord of the Dead.
- 0:34Oblivion is a solid title, but I
- 0:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 0:37Ryan : ravager because the whole idea is like the world is ravaged, right?
- 0:41Or you would
- 0:42Kearns: Oh, that makes sense.
- 0:43Ryan : in the dream world because in the supposed real world, we
- 0:48could say, is it the real world?
- 0:50Reggie is
- 0:52Kearns: Hmm.
- 0:53We're gonna get into that.
- 0:54Ryan : I was gonna say we can just get into like the
- 0:56whole synopsis real quick too.
- 0:59If John, if you wanna take it away on this one.
- 1:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04Jon: Right where we left off and it's
- 1:07Kearns: Again.
- 1:09Ryan : Yeah,
- 1:10Kearns: Yeah, which was a nice surprise.
- 1:12Jon: full on.
- 1:16There's,
- 1:16Kearns: was a nice surprise.
- 1:17Jon: you know, little appearances by Mike and then eventually Jody, but
- 1:23Kearns: Like the nursing home
- 1:25Jon: it's the conclusion of Reggie, like
- 1:30you
- 1:30Ryan : whole, the whole, that's the whole series is Reggie, like
- 1:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:36Ryan : the, in the first film, it's like, okay, it's about Mike, it's about Jodi.
- 1:39But no, Reggie took over and you know what?
- 1:42It fits.
- 1:43Kearns: Do you think Cascarelli was going for that all along, or was it
- 1:46just sort of like it, it flowed into Reggie from Mike and he ran with it.
- 1:52Ryan : Ran.
- 1:53Jon: that, yeah, I think it
- 1:55Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:55Jon: Reggie.
- 1:56Kearns: I've seen, like I know about doing that.
- 1:58I hate plugging writing and stuff, but I've seen like characters
- 2:01grow on their own and change the entire storyline because of them.
- 2:05Rose being the one I'm thinking of Ryan and John, by the way.
- 2:09But yeah, like that whole thing, but with, it feels super exactly on point for this
- 2:14movie, uh, or for the end of the franchise too, that he decided to stop like denying
- 2:20the truth that this is a Reggie story.
- 2:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:24And I think it sort of gets there in Phantasm too.
- 2:28And I think it's more born out of the, that changing casting
- 2:33to go from the original Mike to James the Gross and then back.
- 2:38So it's sort of like left the opening for that one consistent
- 2:43presence through the whole theory.
- 2:45Kearns: All right, so for those of you guys who haven't figured it out
- 2:47yet, by the way, this is our last podcast episode on the Phantasm series.
- 2:53So it's Xenomania and we're finishing up Phantasm with, it doesn't officially
- 2:57have a number in the title by the way.
- 2:59So it's just Phantasm, ravager, almost like it's a standalone.
- 3:03Ryan : I thought it had like a five, like the V five, right?
- 3:06Kearns: Well, it depends on where you find the title.
- 3:08No, you're, they probably weren't, 'cause certain places I found it I couldn't
- 3:12find, I just said Phantasm Colon Ravager
- 3:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:15Kearns: places was And then Ravager was like a subtext in it too.
- 3:20So it's, I don't know.
- 3:21Which is real.
- 3:22Which is very fitting.
- 3:23Ryan : because it's a Phantasm.
- 3:25Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:27Jon: the timelines and dimensions in this one are probably the hardest to follow.
- 3:33Kearns: Oh, I think there, I think it's the most stark, the, it's the
- 3:36first time in the entire franchise where I figured out what he was
- 3:40saying the whole time, like quickly.
- 3:42And not to say that I didn't like that in the first films, but it was, um,
- 3:47well, I mean we'll get into it, but the, that was a bit of um, uh, um,
- 3:52burying the lead a little bit with the, not liking the title Ravager.
- 3:56I liked it because demeanor and some other stuff I'll bring up
- 4:00later on all cycles right into that.
- 4:03Yeah, it's very in your face for mythology, but it also works well.
- 4:07Um, but it still doesn't lead to a definitive conclusion about the tall man,
- 4:12um, or what actually happens at the end.
- 4:14And we'll go through the synopsis there, guys.
- 4:16That further on will tell you when the heavy spoilers are coming once again.
- 4:20'cause I don't wanna just ends.
- 4:22Like, just ruin, any chance of you enjoying this.
- 4:26But, um, the ending is somewhat open-ended.
- 4:29You don't definitively know exactly what happens.
- 4:33Somewhat.
- 4:34John's John's doing it 'cause Yeah, you're, you're right.
- 4:37Jon: I think there's a way to view the end where it's very concrete,
- 4:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:42Jon: like maybe not getting to the end, but the end itself like how
- 4:46this story all ties up in the end.
- 4:48I don't think it's necessarily concrete.
- 4:51Kearns: That's a perfect way to describe it.
- 4:53And also infuriatingly vague, but it has to be because you can't be specific.
- 4:57Right.
- 4:58Jon: Yeah.
- 4:58Yeah.
- 4:59Kearns: so just to jump back to where you were in the synopsis, uh, it's, it
- 5:03picks up right where the last movie left off again and it's, it's once again like
- 5:09this, it's fifth verse, same as the first Reggie is chasing Angus scrim, AKA, the
- 5:16tall man through yet another desert.
- 5:20Um, but this one takes a bit of a wild turn, right Ryan?
- 5:23Like it doesn't take long for it to go whoop.
- 5:26Ryan : No, because it, it flips back to what is, um, I guess you can call it
- 5:31the Phantasm realm, which I'll call it.
- 5:33And then what is the real world where, sadly, Reggie, um, which John informed
- 5:39me today, um, in the movie, the character has dementia and Mike keeps visiting him
- 5:44and checking on him in this real world.
- 5:47I'll just say that, like that, and John was saying like his, like a
- 5:52couple years later, the dementia actually did happen to him.
- 5:55So it's like.
- 5:57ironic in a way.
- 5:57It's a sad irony.
- 5:59And it's like, I feel like watching the franchise from the beginning
- 6:05to like the end, like I got a little emotional for Reggie.
- 6:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:10Ryan : see how the character grows and it's like, man, and he
- 6:15could've gone some tail in this one.
- 6:17Dawn did come down and she was like, Hey Reggie.
- 6:20And he's sleeping on the couch.
- 6:22And I'm like, man, he finally could have gotten some,
- 6:25Kearns: Like real one Real tale, not Tall man tale,
- 6:29Ryan : it wasn't, it wasn't the tall man this time.
- 6:32Kearns: by the way.
- 6:33I love that.
- 6:33That version of the Tall Man shows up in this movie as well.
- 6:36That was like, oh, what a slap in the face that your old girlfriend's back
- 6:40Ryan : the lady in lavender.
- 6:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:42Lady in lavender was like all morphed out and Ugh.
- 6:47Ryan : I,
- 6:47Kearns: But anyway.
- 6:49Ryan : like
- 6:49Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 6:50Ryan : the film, like they did some callbacks from like, especially
- 6:52the second one where he is like, I will give you your family back.
- 6:55He's like, I don't want my family back.
- 6:57I just, I want my friends.
- 7:00Kearns: I wanna find a nice street woman.
- 7:03Ryan : So
- 7:03Jon: it's, it's
- 7:03Kearns: Yeah, I want my friend.
- 7:04Jon: did Phantasm two.
- 7:07Did we know he had a daughter?
- 7:09Kearns: I didn't,
- 7:10Ryan : I thought they just said family.
- 7:12It was just family.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:14Jon: in,
- 7:14Kearns: you have to throw in a kid to spice you up.
- 7:16Jon: your wife and daughter back or like,
- 7:19Kearns: He's like, I'll take the daughter.
- 7:21Jon: that was like stunning revelation.
- 7:25Kearns: The daughter.
- 7:25That never was.
- 7:27Jon: I mean,
- 7:28Kearns: Um, or was she?
- 7:29Jon: some dimension she was.
- 7:31Ryan : Ooh, okay.
- 7:34Kearns: That's the thing.
- 7:35So we, yeah, we can start into that topic right now.
- 7:37That's a good segue into what's real, what's not.
- 7:40Ryan : with a million tall
- 7:41Kearns: So I.
- 7:42Ryan : Angus wrote a million linear note, linear notes for the Beatles, which
- 7:46is pretty cool in multiple dimensions.
- 7:49Kearns: And multiple dimensions, but they do, they go into that rust planet
- 7:53thing where it's almost looks like Mars.
- 7:55And that's sort of his realm.
- 7:57And then there's a multiverse sort of concept there.
- 8:00What he was actually trying to do with that, I don't know if it was just
- 8:05multiverse stuff that he was throwing together to make it make sense.
- 8:09Um, great.
- 8:11And like maybe those are all alternate worlds that have already been ravaged
- 8:14Jon: what
- 8:15Kearns: and he makes his way through each one.
- 8:16Like a disease, that kind of thing.
- 8:18Ryan : Yes.
- 8:19And he's just destroying,
- 8:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:20Ryan : it's like Galactus
- 8:22Kearns: Okay.
- 8:22Interdimensional
- 8:22Ryan : its own
- 8:23Kearns: plate.
- 8:23Well, I was gonna say, there's a lot, like, you can tie
- 8:26that into almost everything.
- 8:28We could even tie it into the Dark Tower Series, Ryan, but we're not
- 8:31gonna, we're, we're not gonna do that.
- 8:33Ryan : Yeah.
- 8:34Kearns: That's tonight.
- 8:34But that's what happens in Roland's home world of gli where, um, the
- 8:39territories really where it's, there's been, it's been ravaged already.
- 8:44Um, but I don't think it takes away from the movie either, because there's
- 8:47also the SubT or the sub, uh, sort of question where, what's real.
- 8:53Is he actually making this up in his head?
- 8:56'cause Reggie finds himself in the, in a scene soon thereafter in the hospital.
- 9:02And he's got dementia like Ryan said earlier.
- 9:04And Mike shows up who's now not the main character, which is sort of funny.
- 9:08And he's like, you're just crazy.
- 9:11And so we don't know if it's a trick by the tall man or if he's got dementia.
- 9:15Jon: Reggie in a wheelchair, it's just so jarring.
- 9:19It's,
- 9:20Ryan : It is.
- 9:21Jon: it's the opening.
- 9:22You,
- 9:23Kearns: Yeah,
- 9:23Jon: see that he's aged some in the years since that, since four came out, but when
- 9:32in those scenes in the nursing home, he.
- 9:35Ryan : Yeah, he does.
- 9:36I feel like it's with the makeup.
- 9:39It's with the makeup because when you
- 9:41Kearns: there.
- 9:42Ryan : the, the phantasm realm, hair is jet black.
- 9:46But when you see him in the, uh, the nursing home, the hospital,
- 9:49they put gray throughout his hair to make 'em look older.
- 9:53So.
- 9:54That's a nice little blend there.
- 9:56Kearns: Angus scrim looks old as hell in this movie, by the way.
- 9:59He still crushes it, but he looks old.
- 10:02Jon: is really sick.
- 10:04You know, he is
- 10:05Ryan : yeah,
- 10:05Jon: he is, he died
- 10:07Kearns: he died.
- 10:07Um,
- 10:09Jon: of the release.
- 10:10Kearns: yeah.
- 10:11Ryan : he didn't look sick at least.
- 10:13I mean, that could have been makeup too, but he, he did a pretty good job.
- 10:18Jon: I think that was a heavy dose of ma makeup and a lot of like
- 10:22Kearns: I think he just soldiered through it.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:24Jon: soft scheduling for him, for shoot, to just sort of keep him and functioning.
- 10:31Ryan : Yeah, I can see that.
- 10:34Kearns: What did he die of?
- 10:37Ryan : That's a good question.
- 10:38Kearns: Angus.
- 10:40Jon: No,
- 10:40Kearns: Because it was certainly like, it wasn't out of the blue,
- 10:43Jon: had a series of
- 10:44Kearns: um, based on this.
- 10:46Ryan : I am trying to look it up real quick.
- 10:52Yep.
- 10:53Kearns: Interesting.
- 10:55Ryan : It was a
- 10:55Kearns: That means that he did a good job keeping it under wraps.
- 10:58Good for them.
- 10:59But, um, I mean,
- 11:01Ryan : too soon.
- 11:03Kearns: I mean, so we get that, that sort of vibe.
- 11:08No, we get that sort of vibe.
- 11:10Um, and then immediately though, he's transported to an alternate
- 11:13world again from the nursing home.
- 11:16And where does he end up after that?
- 11:17Ryan : in the desert.
- 11:19Um, he picks up, uh.
- 11:22Her, her name.
- 11:24Her name, first Dawn, and he's as, he's still
- 11:27Kearns: yeah.
- 11:28Ryan : He's like checking her out.
- 11:29I'm like, dude, you're like, kudos to you.
- 11:32You're like 70 years old, but damn man.
- 11:35And she's like, nah, I'm not falling for this, Reggie.
- 11:37He's like, oh, come on.
- 11:38I'm gonna write you a song.
- 11:40Gets to play his guitar.
- 11:45Poor
- 11:45Kearns: Reggie gonna reg
- 11:46Ryan : have gotten some And he fell asleep.
- 11:48Kearns: Yeah, that's fine though.
- 11:50That, that very on the nose for Reggie.
- 11:53Um, so her name is symbolic too.
- 11:56I'm sure.
- 11:57Dawn being a very, you know, meaningful thing.
- 12:00Um, and she turns out to be like, and correct me if I'm
- 12:03wrong, one of the only humans
- 12:07Jon: Yeah.
- 12:07Kearns: she ever had a chance to sleep with.
- 12:09Ryan : Nope,
- 12:10Kearns: She wasn't ne yeah, she wasn't nefarious.
- 12:13I dunno if I wasn't picking up, I was like, no, this is crazy.
- 12:16This isn't a beat and switch for old Reg this time.
- 12:19It's the first time that Reggie had a legitimate chance to have carnal
- 12:23relations with a lady who was way out of his leg and he fell asleep.
- 12:29That's the saddest part of this franchise.
- 12:33The sad part of this franchise right there.
- 12:36All reg.
- 12:39Yeah, good point.
- 12:40But um, yeah, so as we continue through the timeline of the e of
- 12:43the episode of the movie, that is, I guess an episode though, um,
- 12:47as you travel through after that.
- 12:50Um,
- 12:51Ryan : her there
- 12:51Kearns: he, where does he meet to meet her?
- 12:53Ryan : barn after, um,
- 12:55Kearns: pretty soon.
- 12:55Ryan : hears,
- 12:56Kearns: Yeah, it's pretty soon.
- 12:57Ryan : it out, and it's a pretty cool sphere scene.
- 13:00The sphere's just drilling in her head as she's laying there.
- 13:03Reggie freaking out.
- 13:04You see the sphere go through the door.
- 13:06He almost gets hit.
- 13:07And I don't know what was going on with deme like I.
- 13:10You didn't speak any English.
- 13:11He's like, oh, you're the farmhand.
- 13:13You know, help me.
- 13:14And he thinks Reggie is a threat.
- 13:16And that was another good death scene too, right in the throat.
- 13:20is the fierce kick ass in this movie.
- 13:23Jon: That one, that one has, you know, the slightest bit
- 13:26of comedic element to it too.
- 13:28know, de knocks the spear towards Reggie, and then Reggie like basically
- 13:34accidentally knocks it right back at him.
- 13:36Kearns: That's another very Reggie moment.
- 13:38Um, demeanor's interesting because if Reggie is just as much of a threat
- 13:43to demeanor, if demeanor represents what the God demeanor is, which
- 13:47is growth, fertility, everything, that the worlds that the tall man
- 13:52as ravaged don't have anymore.
- 13:55So is Reggie also just as much of a threat as the tall man?
- 13:58Like what's going on there?
- 13:59Ryan : wild
- 13:59Kearns: We don't have to get into that.
- 14:00That's a wild card question,
- 14:01Ryan : damn.
- 14:02Kearns: true.
- 14:05So Reggie ended up killing it.
- 14:07Ryan : The
- 14:07Kearns: Not necessarily Angus.
- 14:09Well I say Angus, but the tall man.
- 14:11Um, and I mean when he's driving around in his gas guzzling car,
- 14:15which was stolen by the way.
- 14:16We forgot to talk about that.
- 14:17How the movie begins, right?
- 14:19Where he's chasing his car thief and then the the spheres off him.
- 14:25Jon: In the, in the center console and
- 14:28Kearns: Yeah,
- 14:29Jon: no, it's really in the.
- 14:33Kearns: it's wild
- 14:34Ryan : his underwear.
- 14:36Kearns: old re but yeah, that's the, um,
- 14:39Ryan : Barracuda
- 14:40Kearns: I can't believe at this point, I forgot what kind of car it is again.
- 14:43I have dementia.
- 14:45Yeah, the Barracuda, right?
- 14:46The guy stole a 71 Barracuda.
- 14:48I almost called it a charger when we would had to end up
- 14:50Ryan : over.
- 14:50Kearns: end the episode right There would've been it.
- 14:53Um, you, so yeah.
- 14:57Post to meter Reggie is then, um, well this is where we
- 15:01get into heavy spoilers right
- 15:02Ryan : I
- 15:02Kearns: after their to meter.
- 15:04Ryan : the,
- 15:04Kearns: Well, soon after.
- 15:06Ryan : Well, yeah.
- 15:08Yeah.
- 15:08I mean, they were minor.
- 15:09I mean,
- 15:10Kearns: Well, that's okay.
- 15:11Ryan : from Quin, Quin,
- 15:12Kearns: That part is okay.
- 15:14Ryan : well, from my Disney Channel
- 15:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:16Ryan : was, he was the father in Quince.
- 15:18I was like, oh, yeah, he's dead.
- 15:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:22John and I were experimenting with substances and whatnot at that point,
- 15:27probably watching the same show.
- 15:28Just didn't know the title.
- 15:29Ryan : There's five babies.
- 15:33Kearns: Yeah, good quote.
- 15:36Yeah, that was you, you were there.
- 15:38But, uh, so yeah, we're gonna, we're gonna be moving into sort of like overall
- 15:45theories and major spoilers for the actual ending of the franchise and the movie now.
- 15:51So if you guys don't want to do that and you wanna skip ahead to the top
- 15:55five, just go to 10 minutes before.
- 15:58Well, you know what, actually, I'm gonna put a collar on this dog go
- 16:01to six minutes before the end of the episode because our top five go forever
- 16:06and it drives me crazy, but I love it.
- 16:08Jon: button.
- 16:09They'll spend an hour and a half watching Ravager come back.
- 16:15You can, you
- 16:17Kearns: Uh,
- 16:17Ryan : a good.
- 16:18Jon: be giving Ravager
- 16:19Kearns: fair point.
- 16:20Jon: hour and a half like that.
- 16:24one of the great things about, about this franchise is.
- 16:29Short it concise.
- 16:31Like you're, you don't get these bloated two, two and a half hour.
- 16:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:37Jon: and a half story.
- 16:38Here's an hour and a half
- 16:40Kearns: Yep.
- 16:40And that's a really good point.
- 16:42Plus you guys can also watch it on, uh, your chiller subscription, which
- 16:46only costs 5 99 and, uh, shutter
- 16:50Jon: going
- 16:50Ryan : $2.
- 16:51Kearns: going up.
- 16:52Ryan : That's not bad.
- 16:53Jon: Yeah.
- 16:54Kearns: There's a second one that's competing with it too.
- 16:58Jon: I've
- 16:58Ryan : Scream
- 16:58Kearns: There's like screams.
- 17:00Jon: judging by what I've
- 17:01Kearns: Yep.
- 17:01Screen box apparently is blowing up.
- 17:03Jon: bees and stuff like that, like more
- 17:06Ryan : Okay.
- 17:09That's still cool.
- 17:10Jon: but
- 17:10Kearns: Okay.
- 17:11Screw all them.
- 17:12Then.
- 17:13Where did you guys watch Ager?
- 17:15Jon: copies.
- 17:15Kearns: probably opened up his Blu-ray.
- 17:17Jon: All.
- 17:18Ryan : Roku.
- 17:18Jon: leads me to, this leads me to a
- 17:20Kearns: Yeah,
- 17:21Jon: though.
- 17:21If you have a physical copy of a movie, you put it in trailers
- 17:26Before the movie, you always and watch the trailers, you just them.
- 17:31Ryan : I skip 'em.
- 17:31It's like the VHS days.
- 17:33Kearns: I skipped him.
- 17:34Ryan : 10 minutes and then you finish your popcorn.
- 17:37The
- 17:37Kearns: It.
- 17:37Ryan : it's like, oh, I gotta get my candy now.
- 17:39Hold on, pause,
- 17:40Kearns: If it's a new, yeah, if it's new, I'll watch the trailers.
- 17:44But if it's from like 89 or something, or, well, I guess at this point 2016,
- 17:48Jon: watching
- 17:49Kearns: won't do it.
- 17:50Jon: the trailers that are on this disc are just amazing.
- 17:54You a train to boon trailer.
- 17:57Then
- 17:58Kearns: I bet.
- 17:59Jon: which I haven't seen yet,
- 18:00Kearns: Okay.
- 18:01Jon: is phenomenal.
- 18:03Kearns: Really?
- 18:05That's an interesting one that you haven't seen.
- 18:06'cause that is a popular one.
- 18:09Jon: and then the third trailer,
- 18:11Kearns: Uh, like,
- 18:13Jon: alumni snow too.
- 18:16Ryan : Oh yes.
- 18:17Jon: Yeah.
- 18:19it's,
- 18:19Ryan : Love
- 18:19Kearns: no way.
- 18:20Jon: of
- 18:20Kearns: Oh, really?
- 18:22Cool man.
- 18:23Jon: I love trailers,
- 18:24Kearns: what makes you better than us though, John.
- 18:25As you watch the trailers,
- 18:27Jon: only
- 18:28Kearns: shows your love, your love of the game
- 18:30Jon: or like older trailers.
- 18:33'cause like trailer.
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:36They, I, I don't need to see most of
- 18:37Kearns: because new trailers just tell you the movie
- 18:39Jon: done with the trailer, they've shown me everything.
- 18:42Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:42The art of making a quality trailer that that bread crumbs
- 18:46you into a film is gone almost.
- 18:49There's been a couple.
- 18:50Ryan : Yeah.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:53Kearns: Yeah, it's true.
- 18:54Ryan : We lost that guy.
- 18:55Kearns: Maybe that's where we went left in the world.
- 18:58Like as soon as he vanished, the movie phone guy is also gone.
- 19:01He was on the radio for a while, but I haven't heard movie
- 19:03phone guy voice in a while.
- 19:04Ryan : John mentioned it before.
- 19:05This is the first Phantasm that's not directed by Don Cascarelli.
- 19:10directed by a gentleman named David Hartman, and it's also written by David
- 19:15Hartman, along with Don Cascarelli.
- 19:17So I feel like the writing, if it was only Don, it would've definitely,
- 19:24there would've been more like Reggie, trailing females and like
- 19:29more shotgun action and all that.
- 19:32But I feel like David Hartman gave it more, more of a heart and it shows.
- 19:40Jon: So yeah, the
- 19:40Kearns: This is, yeah.
- 19:42Jon: with a web series that Cascarelli Hartman, Reggie and Reggie's wife did,
- 19:51Ryan : Okay.
- 19:52Jon: served as cry out for Hartman, like glitzy, if you can do this.
- 19:58And they just like filmed of short videos at house and some of that winds up
- 20:05Ryan : Okay.
- 20:05Jon: incorporated into this.
- 20:07But that's, that's really the impetus.
- 20:12Ryan : Plus Avery's script.
- 20:13Right.
- 20:15Jon: A little bit, bit.
- 20:16It's interesting because I sort of expected to see an
- 20:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:20Jon: writing credit, but there's not.
- 20:23It's just the two of them.
- 20:25Ryan : Well, did you notice?
- 20:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:30Kearns: So they just cherry picked a little bit of the overall
- 20:32concept of Avery's script and, and used that when they made this.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37We'll talk about that in a little bit,
- 20:38Jon: The
- 20:39Kearns: for everybody who remembers the Avery script was the big budget script.
- 20:42Jon: of the planet.
- 20:47I mean, he may have at
- 20:48Kearns: Well, uh,
- 20:51Jon: but,
- 20:51Kearns: have happened in this one.
- 20:53Jon: I, I think
- 20:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 20:55Jon: thing to throw out about Hartman also is his entire directing career,
- 21:03aside from like a few shorts and stuff here and there is animated.
- 21:08Ryan : Okay,
- 21:10Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 21:12Jon: He's an
- 21:12Kearns: That's cool.
- 21:13I like that very much.
- 21:16Jon: director, and on top of that,
- 21:19Ryan : and what did he do?
- 21:20Jon: illustrator.
- 21:21Kearns: All right.
- 21:22What did he what?
- 21:23Jon: but I, I think I stumbled on some other stuff.
- 21:25But one of them is Winnie.
- 21:26Kearns: Shut up.
- 21:28Jon: He's also
- 21:28Kearns: Okay.
- 21:29Ryan : Okay.
- 21:29Jon: Transform Transformers one on his
- 21:32Kearns: Oh god.
- 21:33That's huge though because that movie Special Effects were beyond the time
- 21:38Jon: the,
- 21:38Kearns: Michael Bay,
- 21:39Jon: animated
- 21:40Kearns: like the animated movie or like the Michael Bay Transformers movie.
- 21:44Jon: no, it was, I think it was later than
- 21:46Kearns: That's pretty sick too though.
- 21:48'cause Yeah, I was gonna say, if it's one I'm thinking of
- 21:52Jon: he collaborated,
- 21:53Kearns: when the New era of Transformers was out.
- 21:56Jon: Paselli
- 21:56Kearns: guy's young.
- 21:57I think
- 21:58Jon: um, John dies at the end on Bubba, and then on.
- 22:04Ryan : so they had a relationship.
- 22:06Jon: Yeah.
- 22:07It's not, it's not like he just picked Yeah, he, he's not,
- 22:11Kearns: he's had his fingers in some pretty sweet pots.
- 22:14Jon: out of the blue randomly to do this.
- 22:16And Hartman's also, I'm gonna plug somebody else's website in this.
- 22:22Go to sideshow monkey.com.
- 22:24That's David Hartman's Horror Illustrator
- 22:29Ryan : Okay.
- 22:29Jon: he's done, I was looking at it, it's, it's recognizable artwork for Rob Zombie.
- 22:35Like some of those things that some of those recognizable
- 22:39Rob Zombie images are hits.
- 22:43Yeah.
- 22:44Ryan : L Super bisto.
- 22:46Kearns: Cool man.
- 22:48I remember El Super Beasto, man.
- 22:50Great reference.
- 22:51I forgot about that.
- 22:52We went to one of Kim's friend's houses.
- 22:54Uh, shout out to Jillian and Tom and, uh, sat down.
- 22:58I had no idea what I was in for and he was like, you wanna watch something?
- 23:01That was literally how it went down.
- 23:02And we just sat down.
- 23:03I think I had like a Miller Light and we were just watching
- 23:06El Super Bisto for two hours.
- 23:08It was wild.
- 23:11Ryan : It's, it's a whole other level of world, like, yes.
- 23:17Kearns: that and Metalocalypse and stuff, those were great.
- 23:19Great For like altered evenings.
- 23:22It was sad when you saw Metal ACOs at three 30 though.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:28Awaken.
- 23:28Awaken.
- 23:29That was one of my favorites too.
- 23:32They had a, they had an album and whatnot too that correlated
- 23:35with the show, I think.
- 23:36Jon: Brandon Small.
- 23:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 23:38Ryan : That's cool.
- 23:39Jon: you, and
- 23:41Kearns: Wow, that's pretty cool.
- 23:43Jon: Metal Geek Gym here, but if you know metal well enough, you
- 23:48Kearns: Just
- 23:48Jon: out the dudes in the metal world
- 23:50Kearns: do it.
- 23:51Jon: are modeled after.
- 23:53Ryan : There's definitely a.
- 23:54Jon: Oh, definitely.
- 23:56Oh
- 23:57Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 23:58Jon: explosion is, uh, I gotta go back and, and, and look it,
- 24:02uh, look it for them again.
- 24:04But like, they're, um, pickles is almost definitely Gene Hoagland who was in, was
- 24:10the drummer for almost at some point.
- 24:14He like all those like second level thrash bands like Exodus.
- 24:20He was, he's the drum for them.
- 24:22He, he drummed for everybody.
- 24:24And then, you know, pokey and the guy whose name I can't remember.
- 24:31clearly like some Swedish guys
- 24:37clearly, but, but that's a topic for another day.
- 24:41I'll go,
- 24:42Kearns: Interesting.
- 24:44Jon: avenues and we
- 24:45Ryan : It's a nice,
- 24:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:47We'll do a special episode.
- 24:48Ryan : great heavy metal musicians.
- 24:51watch
- 24:52Kearns: We can do live watches.
- 24:58So for the viewership, um, I'm way more new metal.
- 25:02I'm way more new metal.
- 25:04Uh, John is a purist with heavy metal.
- 25:07You look, John listens to a lot of different music.
- 25:09We talk about a ton of music.
- 25:10But John is a metalhead for chore in the purest possible.
- 25:14Yeah.
- 25:14Way.
- 25:15Ryan : disco.
- 25:16Kearns: what would you describe yourself as with regard to music?
- 25:18Ryan : Oh,
- 25:18Kearns: think you're a bit of a slut.
- 25:20Ryan : I'm a slut.
- 25:21Kearns: Yep.
- 25:21Ryan : I listen
- 25:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:22Ryan : Um,
- 25:23Kearns: a slut.
- 25:23You listen to like everything, don't you?
- 25:25Ryan : But first thing I was introduced to was heavy metal
- 25:29Metallica, uh, black album.
- 25:32That was the, my first, like
- 25:35Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 25:36But now if you say that to a metal head that Metallica is heavy
- 25:39metal, they're gonna be like,
- 25:41Jon: up until 91 Metallica's a metal
- 25:44Kearns: yeah,
- 25:45Jon: and then they
- 25:46Kearns: I don't like to put
- 25:47Jon: a hard rock band.
- 25:49Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:52Jon: Yeah.
- 25:52Ryan : Load was more hard.
- 25:53Rock.
- 25:53Jon: even
- 25:54Kearns: fair.
- 25:55Jon: starts that transition.
- 25:58Ryan : But it's slow.
- 25:59'cause you still have that thrash in it.
- 26:01But then you can hear like the rums of the guitar being more rock.
- 26:05But it's like mega death.
- 26:06I notice.
- 26:09Jon: when, when you pop, nothing else matters.
- 26:11On an album
- 26:12Kearns: Negative too.
- 26:18A hundred percent.
- 26:20So by the way, the, the, just to give you an idea of nothing else matters.
- 26:24The surgical team that did my surgery, they had nothing else matters going
- 26:30on the, on the TV in the, in the or.
- 26:35Well, that's what I, I, they asked me if I wanted to change the music,
- 26:38and my first response was, I want you guys to listen to whatever the
- 26:41hell makes you work at your best.
- 26:43And like the plastic surgeon that was there started laughing.
- 26:47And then, um, I was like, no, but in hon in all honesty, I don't think there's
- 26:50any better song you could have on right now than nothing else mattered.
- 26:54And like I, I think it was probably a minute and a half later I was
- 26:57out because they put you down.
- 26:59But
- 27:00that would've been in much different vibe.
- 27:02I would've come out with like six arms and have,
- 27:06Jon: The you
- 27:06Kearns: I would've had like two, I would've been all Phantasm out.
- 27:19Um, I still haven't settled on a title yet, but I came up with a story I
- 27:22wrote with what would be worse than dying, while going under for surgery.
- 27:25I. They put you down.
- 27:27You don't know, you're just gone.
- 27:29So I was like, that's not terrible, that's not a terrible fate.
- 27:31What would be worse?
- 27:32And I wrote a story about waking up in an alternate reality and, and
- 27:36then like, it's all fucked up and dystopian and I'm traveling home.
- 27:40It's gonna come out in the collection.
- 27:41But yeah, that was inspired by like, oh shit, that would suck.
- 27:45Okay, we'll do that instead.
- 27:46Jon: the title
- 27:47Kearns: And he comes out, he goes under for a surgery for his like arm or
- 27:50something, but he comes out with a robot arm, which would should be the title.
- 27:57Oh shit.
- 27:58Uh, you know what, I'm gonna start writing.
- 27:59Oh shit.
- 28:00That would suck right after this comes out in May.
- 28:05John, if it makes any money, you're entitled to some of it.
- 28:08Get a lawyer.
- 28:11Oh shit.
- 28:12That'll suck.
- 28:13Not that wood.
- 28:13That'll suck.
- 28:14I wanna make sure it's titled correctly,
- 28:18John.
- 28:19Alright.
- 28:21But, um, we gotta get back to the movie.
- 28:23But that was a, that was probably my favorite side tangent.
- 28:27Like ever.
- 28:29We went very far in very different ways.
- 28:31Um, so we're backward towards the end of the movie.
- 28:34The final confrontation with, with Angus or, uh, sorry.
- 28:38Again, the tall man and Reggie, um, begins and then what is their
- 28:44final confrontation Fellows?
- 28:46Ryan : I wanna talk about real quick, the giant spheres.
- 28:49No, no, you're good.
- 28:50I, I was gonna say like, the spheres,
- 28:51Kearns: Okay.
- 28:52My bad.
- 28:53Ryan : are, are
- 28:54Kearns: Oh.
- 28:55Ryan : off, you have a huge as giant sphere and like a few scenes destroying
- 28:59buildings like Godzilla style.
- 29:02It's it, and it's not like, you can tell it's like cheesy CGI,
- 29:08but it works for this movie.
- 29:10like, okay, this flows nicely.
- 29:12Especially when Reggie's looking at it.
- 29:14I was waiting for like a drill to come out, to go after him.
- 29:18'cause I'd be like, oh, he's, he's like, he, he, he lost his chance to ha to like.
- 29:26fucked and now he is gonna get fucked right now.
- 29:28And I was waiting for it and I was like, all right, this would be a
- 29:30nice little irony scene, funny scene.
- 29:31And then he gets pulled back.
- 29:33But there was one where it came out like as a spike and it goes into one
- 29:40of the guys' heads and it explodes.
- 29:42I thought that was, that is my number one sphere kill of all the films.
- 29:47was just, it was just cool.
- 29:48Kearns: Very scanners of them head exploding.
- 29:52Yeah,
- 29:55Jon: I wanna
- 29:55Kearns: so giant Kaiju spheres,
- 29:57Jon: character in this whole movie, the hospital.
- 30:03Kearns: the hospital's a character.
- 30:04Ryan : the Twilight Zone gentlemen.
- 30:06Jon: the hospital themes are filmed at the Linda Vista Community Hospital,
- 30:10which if you're sharp-eyed enough, is not also used in Day of the Dead.
- 30:15Two contagion, Pearl Harbor end of days,
- 30:19Ryan : Okay.
- 30:21Okay.
- 30:21Okay.
- 30:21Jon: er some episodes of er, some episodes of Buffy
- 30:25Kearns: That's the one in end of it is.
- 30:28Ryan : That is a whole mixture.
- 30:30Like we got comedy, horror, drama,
- 30:32Kearns: pretty cool.
- 30:34Jon: And, and it's also been long believed to be haunted, so you get a whole bunch of
- 30:39Kearns: That is pretty cool.
- 30:41Jon: going there.
- 30:42Ryan : that's cool.
- 30:43Jon: Yeah.
- 30:45Kearns: That's pretty cool too.
- 30:46Yeah.
- 30:47You would imagine once you cording off the perfect hospital
- 30:50for filming that everybody just wants to use that same hospital.
- 30:53Ryan : It's.
- 30:54Jon: if you're doing something
- 30:55Kearns: Right?
- 30:55Jon: a
- 30:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 30:56What you gonna do to go to Fiji?
- 31:01Just adds to the, you should actually be scared.
- 31:04Don't act scared.
- 31:05Be scared.
- 31:06Okay.
- 31:07Ryan : buddy of mine went up to a HO
- 31:09Kearns: In your neck of the woods.
- 31:10Ryan : And you know, there is a presence in some of these spaces.
- 31:15I'm just gonna say that there is a presence.
- 31:19I'm not gonna get into details, but.
- 31:23Jon: there's a presence in some
- 31:24Kearns: Sometimes I think it's just gas.
- 31:27Jon: If you find the right spots in hospitals, they're pretty freaking creepy.
- 31:32Kearns: That's definitely gas.
- 31:33Ryan : to, oh, hospitals in general are
- 31:36Kearns: hospitals in
- 31:37Ryan : but this
- 31:37Kearns: general.
- 31:38Ryan : we were just looking for a place to shoot like a short film.
- 31:41And the history was, it was a mental hospital, but it also, um, it had,
- 31:46uh, con convicted killers in there.
- 31:48And what they would do is 'em underground to another facility
- 31:53Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 31:54Ryan : to, um, basically kill 'em by electrocution electric chair.
- 31:59So it's like very, like, it was like very somber up there,
- 32:03Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:04Ryan : but it was like, uh, it was like a movie man.
- 32:08Like the storms were coming in, and I'm not even exaggerating.
- 32:11Storms were coming in, we're like, we gotta leave.
- 32:13And it was just like the doors to like the loading base just
- 32:17started shaking all at one shot.
- 32:19Now the building also was closed because it's asbestos
- 32:23run in there, no way to get in.
- 32:27And all these doors are like baking at one time with no wind.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:35Yeah.
- 32:35We, we got the hell out of there.
- 32:36I'm not even, we we got that hell out of there.
- 32:39Kearns: I would too.
- 32:41Um, on the topic of hospitals themselves being creepy or, uh,
- 32:46whatever, I think any place laden down with despair or anguish pulls.
- 32:51We may not understand why or how or whatever, but it pulls in that energy
- 32:56so that you feel there's a vibe.
- 32:58There's a feeling it's like very matrixy too, and the way you think about it,
- 33:02um, that's sort of like epicenter.
- 33:05But yeah, there's some sort of weird gravity to that sort of
- 33:09place and that's why hospitals suck
- 33:12Ryan : I.
- 33:13Kearns: the end.
- 33:14This hospital sucks so much.
- 33:15People wanna put it in movies.
- 33:17Ryan : It was on er.
- 33:19It's on er.
- 33:20Kearns: And Reggie was there.
- 33:23Ryan : He,
- 33:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:25So was George Clooney.
- 33:28I like George Clooney.
- 33:31He's fun.
- 33:33I'm just being a cloud at this point.
- 33:35But, so Reggie was in the hospital that was famous for being in a lot of movies.
- 33:39And then, um, he escaped Giant Balls of Death, um, which probably would've been
- 33:45a good name for the next fans as a movie.
- 33:47And then Mike is, what is he Mike doing in the other realm?
- 33:50He's not gaslighting him anymore.
- 33:51Jon: like he's the head a re, uh, tall man resistance movement.
- 33:56Yes.
- 33:57Ryan : Yeah.
- 33:57Jon: Very
- 33:58Kearns: sort of John Connor figure, right?
- 34:04There's a lot of, there's a lot of likes from this, from this and, uh, in this
- 34:09script, but I still don't hate on it.
- 34:13I don't mind borrowing, um, especially when there's like a real main
- 34:17course that's theirs and theirs alone and this feels like that.
- 34:21Um, so he sees Mike and then what does Reggie do with the resistance group
- 34:25Ryan : like it keeps because,
- 34:27Jon: he,
- 34:28Ryan : well, it's
- 34:29Kearns: Leaves?
- 34:30Doesn't he leave?
- 34:32Jon: he's almost
- 34:33Kearns: leaves.
- 34:35Ryan : Yes.
- 34:35Jon: he, it's like so used to fighting this by himself that
- 34:41now that he has allies, almost, not useless, but just lost.
- 34:47Like, this is,
- 34:49Ryan : think it has?
- 34:49Jon: that they've been carrying on and he's not, wasn't a part
- 34:52Kearns: I mean, that fits.
- 34:54Ryan : Do you think it has an effect?
- 34:55Because he keeps going between worlds.
- 34:57That confusion has a point for it because like he just keeps switching
- 35:02back and forth and he's like, one minute it's like the nurse is grabbing him.
- 35:05Then the second, it's a lurker.
- 35:08I feel like you can, like, that's part of that script, like to lead to the
- 35:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:13Ryan : But I agree too that he's been alone the entire time.
- 35:18And this is, this is his swan song.
- 35:21This is Reggie Swan song.
- 35:22This is his movie.
- 35:24Jon: yeah.
- 35:24I mean, really for three movies, Reggie's been solo hunting The Tall Man,
- 35:30Ryan : Yep.
- 35:33Jon: which all, I mean, it also the, this resistance movement
- 35:37Kearns: Yeah,
- 35:37Jon: to
- 35:37Kearns: exactly.
- 35:38Jon: favorite side character in the whole series, our little French chunks.
- 35:49Kearns: Oh, chunk.
- 35:52Which is possibly another homage, but, but yeah, just a name.
- 35:57Anyway.
- 35:58Jon: partially because Cascarelli felt bad for making dwarves look
- 36:03like villains for four whole movies.
- 36:08Ryan : That was his way to apologize.
- 36:10Kearns: Oh, that's great.
- 36:13So he had a Willow character.
- 36:16Yeah.
- 36:17That's amazing.
- 36:18All right.
- 36:18That's a fair thing to feel guilt about though.
- 36:21But then again, George R. Martin doesn't give a shit.
- 36:23Well, no.
- 36:23He made te in like the greatest hero of the aim of the Thrones.
- 36:26Nevermind.
- 36:27Jon: same actor be one of the, the lurkers during Ravager.
- 36:32he pops up early in the movie, in the, in the lurker costume too.
- 36:37Kearns: Right.
- 36:37Ryan : the one who, he's the first L who gets shot, right?
- 36:42Yeah.
- 36:45Kearns: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 36:46Ryan : He
- 36:46Kearns: it's a running joke.
- 36:47Ryan : too, with the, well, we could talk about it.
- 36:49We said spoilers the grenade scene.
- 36:51That was an awesome scene.
- 36:52I wasn't seeing that for the first time.
- 36:55And he's just like, Hey.
- 36:56And he just runs up like suicide, like bomber style just like grabs him and just,
- 37:02it's like, what the hell is going on?
- 37:04You know what I mean?
- 37:06Like, this guy is crazy.
- 37:07And uh, I don't know if we're gonna cover that now, but it was
- 37:12just, that was just a crazy scene.
- 37:14And the aftermath.
- 37:16I, well, he sur
- 37:19Kearns: We might as well.
- 37:20Jon: Yeah.
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:21Kearns: There's not much between where we were and where that is.
- 37:24Ryan : bombing.
- 37:25He was gonna sacrifice his life.
- 37:26And guess who's on the other end?
- 37:29Uh, Reggie's lost love.
- 37:32but no nunchucks.
- 37:33I was disappointed.
- 37:35Jon: In the only, in the only post credit
- 37:39Kearns: No
- 37:39Jon: the
- 37:39Kearns: nunchucks for Rocky.
- 37:40Another callback.
- 37:42So, which, so the listeners may not realize what you guys just did though.
- 37:47Did you just say the end of the movie and then the post credit and,
- 37:52Jon: we've
- 37:52Kearns: and we just haven't gone over what it all means yet, but we just
- 37:55basically detailed the end of the film.
- 37:58Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 38:00Kearns: we didn't talk about Yeah, I was gonna say we, we jumped
- 38:03like right to a small snippet.
- 38:04So let's, let's explain it all to, to them real quick.
- 38:09Jon: So
- 38:10Kearns: I mean, they're gonna feel Phantasm.
- 38:12All right.
- 38:13Be like, what the hell did he, because he's like, yeah.
- 38:15The post credit team where Nick Fury shows up, they're like, what the fuck?
- 38:18Jon: we get, we get to the end
- 38:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:22Reggie, we need you.
- 38:25Jon: of the movie and of reg.
- 38:28Ryan : Yeah.
- 38:34Jon: It's sort of deeper because you know of his real life struggles now.
- 38:42But you know, it's really a gut punch to see that theme at the end where Reggie
- 38:51Ryan : Yeah.
- 38:52Jon: dying in what amounts to the realest the dimensions he's been in,
- 38:57Ryan : Yeah.
- 38:58Jon: you know,
- 38:58Kearns: Yeah,
- 38:59Jon: with
- 39:00Kearns: that's a, that's a great way to put it.
- 39:02By the way,
- 39:02Jon: Yeah, yeah,
- 39:04Kearns: he's not in some fake, weird scatter land.
- 39:07He's, yeah.
- 39:08He's in reality, or at least to, to him.
- 39:11Jon: that moment is so, so emotional and then you're like sort of transported
- 39:17to Reggie in the back of the, with a very much alive, Mike and Jodi that,
- 39:25I don't know, like you could almost.
- 39:28You'd almost make the case that
- 39:31that's Reggie's afterlife.
- 39:34Now that Reggie's just gone.
- 39:37Because if you think about it, Reggie's really the only one who
- 39:43seems to have existed solely as one.
- 39:47Reggie.
- 39:49Ryan : Yes.
- 39:49Jon: you go to these other dimensions, especially in Ravager,
- 39:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:54Jon: Mike, real world Mike, who doesn't, starts out not knowing anything about
- 40:01the tall man, and then there's Jody who's been a sphere, who's been dead, who's
- 40:06been whatever apparition he becomes.
- 40:09He's been a sphere like man, Reggie's always just been this one real ish world.
- 40:17Reggie, you don't meet other, other Reggie?
- 40:22Ryan : I think there's
- 40:23Kearns: Right
- 40:24Ryan : who's just been crossing dimensions.
- 40:28Yes.
- 40:29Kearns: one Reggie to rule them all.
- 40:32Something like that.
- 40:33But
- 40:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:34Kearns: no, it's true.
- 40:34It's not main character syndrome either.
- 40:36I think it's by design.
- 40:38Um, and that could lead you to back down the path of this is dementia and it's all
- 40:42comes back to Reggie just being crazy.
- 40:44Or it could bring you back down the path of like, it's Reggie's Phantasm.
- 40:50Jon: Yeah.
- 40:50Kearns: But I guess that's not so different than the
- 40:52dementia argument either.
- 40:54I don't like going down that path.
- 40:56I don't like that ending for him that it was just a fever
- 40:58dream of a man losing his mind.
- 41:01Uh, also don't like that so much because that's what's actively
- 41:04happening to the actor right now in his real life, which sucks.
- 41:07Jon: this
- 41:08Kearns: it's almost like prophetic.
- 41:09Jon: where that ending him dying in the bed with the two of them around him of,
- 41:19know, the closure and almost the joy that the three of them are still together.
- 41:25There's
- 41:25Ryan : yeah.
- 41:27Jon: dead fear, Jody and
- 41:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:30Jon: is at that point.
- 41:32Like it's the real world friendship.
- 41:37Ryan : I like that because that's, that was what Phantasm
- 41:41Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:42Ryan : was like a whole bunch of friends.
- 41:43Making a, a movie and Yeah, in the backyard and having
- 41:48Kearns: You brought it back.
- 41:49Yeah.
- 41:49Ryan : it.
- 41:49And it created like this, this franchise, which was very underrated.
- 41:55was, it's a very underrated horror franchise.
- 41:58And yes, people, it's, can have, it's a specific taste, but the first one
- 42:03I feel like draws to everyone that's, it's a definite because it's that
- 42:08mysteriousness, it gives, and then you're attracted to the further sequels.
- 42:12But you gotta realize the budgets, they fluctuate.
- 42:17And you know, some are higher than others.
- 42:20And you see it did you see, did you know, did you find out how much this
- 42:25Kearns: Yeah.
- 42:25Ryan : John?
- 42:26Jon: I didn't look for it.
- 42:27No, it's not.
- 42:29Not a lot especially, and it's probably very difficult to
- 42:33accurately calculate just based on, it's filmed over seven years.
- 42:39Ryan : Yeah.
- 42:40Kearns: Yeah, that's wild too.
- 42:42How much do you think the giant sphere, uh, CGI sphere stuff costs?
- 42:46Like the LOLs level of CGI that was in
- 42:51Jon: It
- 42:51Kearns: that scene?
- 42:52It's like $14.
- 42:53Jon: did it.
- 42:55Right.
- 42:55If they done it in the
- 42:57Kearns: I, yeah,
- 42:57Jon: of that, it's probably really expensive.
- 42:59But if they did it like on towards 2013, it's probably not much.
- 43:05Ryan : feel like they did the war scenes from, like, looking at it,
- 43:07Kearns: that's a fair point.
- 43:08Like,
- 43:08Ryan : younger during like the war scenes and then during the hospital
- 43:12scenes they looked much older.
- 43:14I, I mean, that's how it, like,
- 43:17Kearns: Hmm.
- 43:17Ryan : about it now, like I feel like Mike had a little more
- 43:20hair, a little more on the top.
- 43:24I'm talking to the expert right here.
- 43:26Kearns: Maybe
- 43:27Ryan : it's a little little to the, to the left, right there, Mike.
- 43:31All right.
- 43:32Kearns: that's possible though.
- 43:33That is possible that that's how they ended up shaking out with the filming, but
- 43:38Ryan : show that different
- 43:39Kearns: I don't know.
- 43:40Ryan : that, which, uh, I, I don't know.
- 43:43I, you can think about it too as like a matrix moment, like
- 43:46when, uh, spoiler alert on the matrix when Neo gets pulled out.
- 43:51You can see it like that.
- 43:52Like him dying in that hospital bed isn't really him dying, it's him getting pulled
- 43:59out that dimension to go to another dimension where he's more comfortable in
- 44:04Jon: Yeah.
- 44:04Ryan : and he's well aware of.
- 44:06Jon: if Yeah,
- 44:09Kearns: one who's super uncomfortable in which is the tall man as well.
- 44:12Jon: deeply spiritual, he's pulled outta that world and goes to heaven
- 44:16because heaven for Reggie would be in heaven for, but heaven for Reggie would
- 44:22be in that cuda with Jodi and Mike.
- 44:25would be heaven for Reggie.
- 44:28Get that, get that light shining
- 44:31Kearns: And
- 44:32Jon: in.
- 44:32Kearns: possibly dawn.
- 44:35Jon: It's a very emotional, very, like I've,
- 44:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:39Jon: the
- 44:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:40Jon: twice record this now, and like each time I sort of walked away,
- 44:45like the first time it was just, God.
- 44:47That's sad.
- 44:49But then I watched it again because it sort of started to eat in into my brain
- 44:53that another level to that that's not said because that I couldn't, I can't
- 44:59really get behind Cascarelli ending it.
- 45:02Just that down.
- 45:05Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 45:07And it, it's all about just like the rest of the movie, it's all about perspective.
- 45:10You can see it as sad, oh, Reggie died, that sucks.
- 45:14You can see it as that spiritual sort of rebirth.
- 45:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:19Kearns: to be religious either.
- 45:20You can make it scientific.
- 45:21It is a multiverse film.
- 45:23There's multiple dimensions.
- 45:25He could end up in another one.
- 45:26Um, the post credit scene is what you're talking about, right?
- 45:30You're Yeah.
- 45:31That's what you're specifically talking about.
- 45:33Yeah.
- 45:34So the fact that he made that the post credit scene though
- 45:37adds extra emphasis to it.
- 45:39I think it makes it so it has to mean that that's his heaven, essentially.
- 45:44That's what he always wanted.
- 45:45And maybe that's him.
- 45:46Maybe he's just jumping like freaking quantum leap just hopping
- 45:50into different, different realms.
- 45:51Fighting
- 45:52Jon: I
- 45:52Kearns: the tall man for all eternity.
- 45:53'cause that was kind of Reggie's thing.
- 45:56Jon: in this, in Ravager.
- 45:58What was important to Reggie?
- 46:00The tall man's willing to give him his family.
- 46:03No,
- 46:03Ryan : Yep.
- 46:03Jon: Mike and Jody twice.
- 46:05Twice.
- 46:06I want Mike and Jody
- 46:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:08Jon: and he gets them.
- 46:09I
- 46:10Ryan : It's his loyalty.
- 46:10Jon: you know, you can Yeah.
- 46:12Kearns: Just goes to show your friends are so much better than your wife and kid.
- 46:16Ryan : you.
- 46:17Yes.
- 46:19Jon: Rose before.
- 46:22Kearns: She's here.
- 46:23Yeah.
- 46:24But yeah, man.
- 46:25And Joey's before.
- 46:27But yeah, man.
- 46:28Um, I think that it ended as, it, it didn't, it had to do with like phantasm.
- 46:34It was an unexpected ending to a degree.
- 46:37It was a non, it wasn't completely definitive.
- 46:41The ending, the, you can still talk about it.
- 46:43It was very phantasm, but at the end of the day, it's like, it's pretty,
- 46:46it's probably this sort of thing.
- 46:48Um, the fact that Cascarelli sort of farmed out a lot of the work,
- 46:52the script writing and stuff to a very capable guy was interesting
- 46:55to me because it was the last one.
- 46:58I feel like this was another movie that maybe almost never was, um, given how
- 47:03it sort of became cobbled together.
- 47:05And I'm glad that it was because Phantasm deserves an ending and Angus died.
- 47:11Angus scrim died like right then, so we would never would've had the ending.
- 47:16So I'm glad Cascarelli got his swan song.
- 47:18Angus finished his project, Reggie got the ending, the character got the ending,
- 47:22and the actor got to realize the end.
- 47:25And just like you said, Ryan Phantasm and John has been saying
- 47:28this all the time at work too.
- 47:30Phantasm is a, is a very good series and upon rewatch you get to
- 47:35appreciate it a lot more than you did in the eighties and nineties and
- 47:39Ryan : It's a
- 47:39Kearns: two thousands.
- 47:41Ryan : It is
- 47:41Jon: Absolutely.
- 47:42if, if I were to
- 47:43Kearns: That's just so good.
- 47:45Yeah.
- 47:46Ryan : yes.
- 47:48Jon: yeah, absolutely.
- 47:50Watch
- 47:50Kearns: don't have like a rating system or anything, but fucking do it.
- 47:53I'm also, we're not supposed to be cursing anymore, but we're leaving that one in.
- 47:56Jon: watched the first four
- 47:58Kearns: it.
- 47:58Jon: you're gonna
- 47:59Ryan : Yeah.
- 47:59Jon: out at five, like
- 48:02get, get on.
- 48:05Kearns: Well, that's a good point.
- 48:08Yeah.
- 48:09I don't think there's many people who made it to four and we're like, you know what?
- 48:12That's it.
- 48:13Jon: and
- 48:13Kearns: We're done here.
- 48:14Jon: Phantasm out in a weekend.
- 48:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:18Jon: watch Fanm.
- 48:19Kearns: You can bang that out faster than Reggie tries to bang
- 48:21out all the girls and Fantastic.
- 48:23How about that?
- 48:24Ryan : Tall man
- 48:25Kearns: How about that?
- 48:28That's the only girl he made it.
- 48:30Ryan : No.
- 48:31Kearns: He banged, um, Orbies too, didn't he?
- 48:34No.
- 48:34He molested Orbies.
- 48:36Yeah, he Bill Cosby Orbies.
- 48:38That's not good.
- 48:39Reggie.
- 48:39I forgot about Reggie.
- 48:40Reggie's exploits are a little iffy.
- 48:42We, we chanced upon those in previous episodes and sort of like
- 48:46graced over them a little bit, but Oh, Reggie's got some loose SMLs,
- 48:52but Ryan did save him.
- 48:53Yeah, he is an ice cream man.
- 48:55Ryan did save him with that.
- 48:56It was the sound of the buzzing that made him look at her bare chest, not
- 49:00Ryan : a Mary Swanson
- 49:02Kearns: her.
- 49:02Orbies.
- 49:03Samsonite, every time you bring that up, I'm gonna say Sam tonight
- 49:08Jon: Yep,
- 49:08Ryan : Yes.
- 49:09Kearns: and last time we segued into space balls, by the way, because
- 49:12we did the stupid luggage joke.
- 49:14So it was like a perfect pop, pop, pop.
- 49:17Jon: it is.
- 49:17Ryan : Yes.
- 49:18Kearns: Uh, so that's the end of Phantasm everybody.
- 49:21Um,
- 49:22Ryan : episode.
- 49:23Kearns: and subscribe.
- 49:24Ryan : Jada can't wait for next week's episode.
- 49:26We're gonna watch it on Sunday.
- 49:27All right.
- 49:28I'm, do you guys know what the next episode is?
- 49:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:32Ryan : Come on now.
- 49:33John knows.
- 49:34Do you know?
- 49:35Oh, just making sure.
- 49:36It's Clive
- 49:38Kearns: did the schedule.
- 49:40Ryan : Oh, I hope Clive Barker's night
- 49:42Kearns: know my name right now.
- 49:44Ryan : It's phenomenal.
- 49:45Kearns: one of my favorite movies of all time horror movies of all time.
- 49:48And what I love the most about Night Breed, which we'll talk about when
- 49:50we get into Night Breed, 'cause we could do a whole other hour on the
- 49:52back of this one on Night Breed without even watching it again.
- 49:55Um, is not just the amazing lore, the comics, and all sorts of
- 50:01stuff that goes with night Breed,
- 50:03Ryan : Yes.
- 50:03Kearns: the fact that I think the scariest part is the human.
- 50:06And we'll probably get into that a lot in the movies when we talk about it.
- 50:09But the, the, as a kid watching the scenes with the dude, like sneaking
- 50:14into the house, Michael Myers style
- 50:17Ryan : It's
- 50:17Kearns: was way scarier than the monsters and Night Breed.
- 50:20Eh, the does,
- 50:22Ryan : the fact that,
- 50:23Kearns: it's got like a scarecrow vibe.
- 50:24You're right.
- 50:25Ryan : just to hint, it would be the main villain is someone who you would trust.
- 50:30And that's what makes it even scarier.
- 50:32Kearns: We trust Viewer to sucker.
- 50:34I don't trust anybody.
- 50:35Not even myself.
- 50:36Ryan : Gimme a hell.
- 50:37Yeah.
- 50:37Hell yeah.
- 50:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:43Oh yeah.
- 50:45I wish we had two beers to smash together in honor of ending this franchise.
- 50:48Phantasm, you've barely been, been gone.
- 50:50Yay.
- 50:52Look at you.
- 50:53Look at us hydrating polar cells here.
- 50:55Everyone official, non-sponsored of Xenomania podcast.
- 50:58I do love Polar.
- 50:59Jon: the Sprite.
- 51:03Ryan : Ooh,
- 51:05Jon: I don't know.
- 51:06It's cherry,
- 51:07Kearns: What does, what does the chill part do?
- 51:09Ryan : the chill.
- 51:11Jon: yeah.
- 51:12Kearns: Oh, nice.
- 51:13Yeah, like it's the part that gives you anal cancer.
- 51:18Yay.
- 51:19Coca-Cola Corporation.
- 51:21Ryan : oh God.
- 51:22Kearns: Clear Pepsi.
- 51:24What?
- 51:24We took out the stuff that's illegal in Europe.
- 51:29I'm sorry.
- 51:30Ryan : Yes.
- 51:31Kearns: Oh dude.
- 51:32Joe Cola, bacon, egg, and cheese in the mornings.
- 51:34That was like my, my start to my day every day from ninth through 10th grade
- 51:39and it would only cost me a dollar 75.
- 51:41Yeah.
- 51:42Between Jolt and Devil's Springs Vodka and Bacardi 1 41 or is it 1 51 rather?
- 51:48Um, we didn't have to have much of the latter, by the way,
- 51:52for it to have done something.
- 51:54I'm sure.
- 51:54Ryan : I wanna know what Mound Dew
- 51:56Kearns: I wonder what it does to your gut microbiome.
- 51:58Ryan : That I wanna know what's going
- 51:59Kearns: What do you think?
- 52:00That stuff's probably worse than everything we mentioned earlier.
- 52:03I would rather have sex with the lady in lavender
- 52:06Ryan : I
- 52:06Kearns: than drink a Mountain Dew Code red right now at 41 years old.
- 52:10Ryan : a risk, but I still drink it.
- 52:11It's the ch I like the cherry.
- 52:14Alright.
- 52:15Kearns: You still drink it.
- 52:17Brian Ryan.
- 52:19Even John.
- 52:20Look at John's worried.
- 52:21Ryan : What I, I
- 52:22Kearns: Look at John's face.
- 52:24Ryan : red.
- 52:24Kearns: You could have said anything.
- 52:25You could have been like, I ride a motorcycle without a helmet
- 52:27and I do 90 on on the highway.
- 52:29And I would been like, man, that's, that's a choice.
- 52:31I guess that's pretty cool.
- 52:32You said I drink Mountain Dew code red and both of us got dire
- 52:36Ryan : you up while gaming guys.
- 52:38Drink code Red.
- 52:40Jon: I,
- 52:40Kearns: drink black coffee and water.
- 52:42It's so much better for you.
- 52:43Jon: drinking
- 52:44Kearns: It's also sadder, but
- 52:45Jon: land.
- 52:48Ryan : Oh, Jesse Eisenberg
- 52:50Jon: Yeah.
- 52:51Kearns: that's
- 52:52Ryan : double
- 52:52Kearns: good reference by the way.
- 52:54Yeah.
- 52:57Is that how we got all twitchy?
- 53:00All twitchy.
- 53:01Don't they have like a cooler code red than They do like a nutty one for a while.
- 53:06Not like actual nuts, but they, I thought they did something crazier
- 53:09for a little bit where they did double the caffeine of Code Red
- 53:12Ryan : Halo
- 53:13Kearns: for like Halo three or Reach or something maybe.
- 53:16Ryan : Yeah.
- 53:16'cause that
- 53:16Kearns: I appreciate that stuff.
- 53:18Halo two,
- 53:20Ryan : I don't,
- 53:20Kearns: still have a bottle of that, it's worth money.
- 53:22Ryan : gone in my esophagus.
- 53:28Kearns: No, I mean full like seals.
- 53:30There was a dude who found one in his garage fridge and he had it, and
- 53:35I don't know if he sold it or not, but I remember people were like,
- 53:37oh, give us so much money for that just to taste that experience again.
- 53:41Ryan : that will, that, that'll definitely kill you, that'll eat your insides.
- 53:45All the chemicals have, like, they're not flushed out.
- 53:48They've been brewing
- 53:49Kearns: it's aged like whiskey.
- 53:52But no, that means taste.
- 53:53The experience.
- 53:54What it was like when Halo two came out.
- 53:56Imagine the difference in how life felt.
- 53:59What a morning felt like that day when Halo two was launching and
- 54:02you were about to go to GameStop.
- 54:03Was it even GameStop back then?
- 54:06Yeah.
- 54:07You'd go to Babbage's baby.
- 54:08Yep.
- 54:09You were heading in one of those spots.
- 54:10I don't even think GameStop was the spot yet.
- 54:13And you were picking up Halo too, and your priorities were what?
- 54:18Ryan : and science
- 54:19Kearns: I gotta walk the dog.
- 54:20Ryan : to dual wield with master chief.
- 54:22Kearns: I think I was, I think I might've been college.
- 54:25Yeah, exactly.
- 54:26I think I might have been in college for Halo too.
- 54:28Ryan : So
- 54:29Kearns: it was in the 2002, 2006 one,
- 54:32Ryan : two.
- 54:34Hold on.
- 54:34Kearns: something like that.
- 54:35But anyway,
- 54:36Jon: working.
- 54:37Kearns: along here.
- 54:38Jon: I was a year away from being,
- 54:39Kearns: Yeah, you were probably already,
- 54:41Jon: away from being,
- 54:42Kearns: I know exactly where we were probably working.
- 54:44Oh Lord.
- 54:46That's the saddest part of this episode.
- 54:47We're gonna have to wrap it up everybody.
- 54:50Jon: been at.
- 54:53Kearns: We all work together by the way.
- 54:58We're gonna just see you at the end.
- 55:00Like, I just wanna be with Martin and Ryan again.
- 55:02And there's a light that shines on you, but you're in building too.
- 55:05And then you just hear Angus scrim laugh in the background fiend.
- 55:10Aw man.
- 55:12But it doesn't just hurt you, buddy because it's only a matter of time.
- 55:16This camera's doing a good job of hiding it.
- 55:19It's hiding it now.
- 55:20The wind was blowing today and it was going up and one of our students said,
- 55:23I looked like I was wearing a toupee.
- 55:24And it was like, shut your stupid mouth shut.
- 55:28Dumb mouth dummy.
- 55:30It's a hundred percent mine and I grew it with all my love.
- 55:34It's like a chia pet.
- 55:35Ryan : grows.
- 55:37Kearns: I was so offended though.
- 55:38I was like, you did toupee.
- 55:39You bastard.
- 55:41I'm just gonna write down notes all weekend for how to burn
- 55:44him on Monday, but I digress.
- 55:48Um, alright, so we're done with the episodes on Phantasm.
- 55:51We go right into night breed next week, which is really
- 55:55exciting, to be honest with you.
- 55:56And yeah.
- 55:57Um, we're gonna jump into top fives.
- 55:59Here we go.
- 56:00Gentlemen,
- 56:01Ryan : no.
- 56:02Kearns: top five reasons to cry at the movies.
- 56:04Ryan : no, not five cools that the crying was
- 56:07Kearns: dammit.
- 56:07Ryan : I went with friends that help friends defeat the evil that
- 56:13they're facing in horror movies.
- 56:14So, to start it off,
- 56:19Kearns: Ooh.
- 56:19Is this the one like where Ray Romano helps the guy kill himself?
- 56:22Ryan : No, I'm joking.
- 56:25Kearns: No, nobody knows that movie.
- 56:27Nobody knows that movie.
- 56:28It's, it's the saddest movie we've ever seen.
- 56:30I'm sorry, I'm gonna shut up now and let you do your top five.
- 56:32Ryan : them being a Ray Romano fan.
- 56:34Um, first movie I went with number five, produced by ghi,
- 56:39Mel del Toro, came out in 2019.
- 56:41It is of my favorite horror book series growing up.
- 56:46Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark.
- 56:48Um, that movie, about a group of friends.
- 56:51It's based on short stories.
- 56:53Kearns: Nice.
- 56:54Ryan : Since like, I guess late eighties, early nineties, um, in every
- 56:58elementary library had these stories and scared the shit out of us first
- 57:04graders and second graders, and we loved it and we kept coming back from war.
- 57:08And this movie covers a lot of the good stories.
- 57:10My favorite b and the alert, the spider coming out the girl's face.
- 57:16But it is also a movie I believe should have been rated RI don't think
- 57:19it, the PG 13 rating did any justice,
- 57:24I mean, that's as much as I can go with it.
- 57:26I loved it.
- 57:28Kearns: That's fair.
- 57:29They wanted to bring in some of the kids along with us, the OGs
- 57:34that read them and saw them.
- 57:36Um, and it did.
- 57:37They, you're right.
- 57:38They should have just committed.
- 57:39There were scenes in that that could have been truly terrifying,
- 57:41that were actually scary.
- 57:42Ryan : that was, that's
- 57:44Kearns: thinking of the, the hallway scene.
- 57:45Ryan : seeing it live.
- 57:47I was like, yes.
- 57:48And then just as she's just pulling him in, I, I wanted, that's all.
- 57:52I'm gonna leave it at that because I don't wanna,
- 57:57well,
- 57:58Kearns: Where's my toe?
- 57:59Should have been in that movie, by the way.
- 58:01That's the scariest story in, for me, in the scary stories telling the dark,
- 58:04Ryan : in it.
- 58:05Kearns: the kid finds the toe and then they cook it for soup for some reason.
- 58:09But by the way, that, that, um, I should remind you, by the way, it's, those
- 58:14are ba a lot of those are based on folk legends and things like that too.
- 58:18They, they're, yeah, they're urban legends mixed in with folk legends.
- 58:22And there's some that are just short stories, like you said, but, and some are
- 58:25poem, but yeah, there's some old stuff.
- 58:28Jon: I didn't have, miss
- 58:30Kearns: You have it.
- 58:31Jon: when I was a kid.
- 58:31Like, I basically went from like Boys to Stephen King.
- 58:37Ryan : Okay.
- 58:37Jon: There was
- 58:37Ryan : fair.
- 58:38Jon: transition in there.
- 58:39It was just, but
- 58:41Kearns: Nice.
- 58:42Jon: wasn't that directed by, um, Andre Overda Al, however you pronounce his name,
- 58:47Ryan : Yes.
- 58:49Yep.
- 58:50Uh, produced by Gil Malto.
- 58:51Kearns: Is it produced by Guillermo del Toro?
- 58:53Yeah.
- 58:54Jon: Troll Hunter.
- 58:56Ryan : Yes.
- 58:58It it, that's what makes it such a good film too, 'cause
- 59:01it's, uh, you got a good crew.
- 59:03You've got a good cast.
- 59:05The story is decent to bring these stories to life with the witch.
- 59:09And the most important part, like Phantasm, it's all about friendship,
- 59:13which, you know, leads to number four.
- 59:18can call these two guys friends.
- 59:20They're more like half brothers.
- 59:22And this 2001 movie written by co-written by JG Abrams and has like
- 59:30uncredited role to Stacey Keach.
- 59:32It stars Steve's on.
- 59:34Paul Walker as Half Brothers Will Lee Lisa Bisky as they are
- 59:39terrorized by a trucker on the highway in the movie called Joy Ride.
- 59:43I do like joy ride.
- 59:44Um, you can say that these two half brothers, Steve Za and Paul Walker
- 59:48become friends over time and their goal after Steve's on basically makes
- 59:54fun of Stacey Keach and calling him an inbred truck fucker, um, ape shit.
- 1:00:01And they have to like, save themselves basically from this crazy truck driver
- 1:00:07who just toys with the entire time.
- 1:00:09It's a fun 2001 thriller.
- 1:00:11Um, I, I like it.
- 1:00:13I still like it.
- 1:00:14It holds, I think it holds, I dunno what you guys think about it, but you know, I
- 1:00:21think it's, I don't think it's a bad film.
- 1:00:25Kearns: I just wanna hear number three.
- 1:00:27Ryan : Keach is a show stealer too, you know.
- 1:00:29Wait, what'd you say, Martin?
- 1:00:31I didn't hear you.
- 1:00:34Oh my
- 1:00:36Kearns: I said, I just wanna hear number three.
- 1:00:40I'm going with my shtick of being, being angry about long top fives.
- 1:00:47I'm gonna look now, I'm gonna look up Stacy Keach while
- 1:00:49you're talking about that.
- 1:00:50Ryan : Chin X Chong Universe.
- 1:00:52Um,
- 1:00:53Kearns: Best mustache in the biz besides Stan Elliot.
- 1:00:56Ryan : a
- 1:00:56Kearns: All right.
- 1:00:57Ryan : and Pi Curry is still not dead, sadly.
- 1:01:00John Ritter is, and it's from 1990 Stephen King's.
- 1:01:04It.
- 1:01:05Um, I went with the original 'cause that cover freaked me out as
- 1:01:09Kearns: yeah,
- 1:01:10Ryan : intrigued me and enticed me to watch it.
- 1:01:12And whole group of friends who go back to their hometown and fight this evil clown.
- 1:01:19That's all I'm gonna say.
- 1:01:20I don't wanna spoil it.
- 1:01:22No one's seeing it.
- 1:01:23Did we spoil it?
- 1:01:25Kearns: and we, I think we did a, yeah, I think we did a good job.
- 1:01:28And a bit of a deep dive on a tangent and another episode too,
- 1:01:31'cause it's star tower related.
- 1:01:33But can we talk about the gang bang that Stephen King wrote
- 1:01:36about a gang bang with kids?
- 1:01:37Well, actually I guess it was just a threesome,
- 1:01:39Ryan : Yeah.
- 1:01:40Kearns: but, but to your.
- 1:01:42That wasn't orgy.
- 1:01:43To your point though, that was about their comradery and closeness
- 1:01:48more than it was about sex.
- 1:01:49And it was confirmed by King that that's what he was going for.
- 1:01:52But cocaine is a hell of a drug, so he, he kind of, he kind of
- 1:01:57missed the Mark A. Little bit.
- 1:01:58For some people it didn't age well, but I get what he was trying to do with it,
- 1:02:02like they were going to die and whatnot.
- 1:02:04Ryan : which
- 1:02:05Kearns: That was sort of the thing.
- 1:02:06Ryan : own, in his own world.
- 1:02:07Thank you.
- 1:02:08Kearns: Anyway,
- 1:02:08Ryan : I love it.
- 1:02:09I
- 1:02:09Kearns: good choice.
- 1:02:10Ryan : new one.
- 1:02:11Uh, but the original 1990 still hits and Tim Curry as Pennywise.
- 1:02:16just Tim Curry.
- 1:02:19It's just, he's amazing.
- 1:02:21Kearns: Best.
- 1:02:21Ryan : that kinda leads me to number two.
- 1:02:26I'm fine with that.
- 1:02:28a John Ritter.
- 1:02:29Kearns: I decided not to say anything 'cause I wanted to get to
- 1:02:32number two, but I could have gone into the scars, scar jokes so fast.
- 1:02:36Ryan : might
- 1:02:36Kearns: I was like, no, shut up Martin.
- 1:02:37Ryan : guard.
- 1:02:40Kearns: There were two.
- 1:02:43Ryan : well
- 1:02:43Kearns: I'm sure
- 1:02:44Ryan : directed and
- 1:02:44Kearns: they're
- 1:02:45Ryan : John
- 1:02:45Kearns: in my nightmares.
- 1:02:46Ryan : ones an American werewolf in London.
- 1:02:49Now it's the main character who gets turned into a
- 1:02:53Kearns: That sounds a good movie.
- 1:02:55Ryan : friend is still with him, his first, first victim.
- 1:02:59He sees him throughout the entire movie as he's going through this
- 1:03:01journey of understanding of or becoming a werewolf overall.
- 1:03:05And his friend.
- 1:03:07It's been a while since I've seen it, but I feel like he kind of like tr tries
- 1:03:11to egg him on to become this beast.
- 1:03:14me if I'm wrong, it's been a long time since I've seen it, but he's like keeps
- 1:03:18egging him on throughout the whole thing.
- 1:03:20Kearns: No, he's, yeah, he's, he's in not a beneficial presence overall.
- 1:03:26Yeah.
- 1:03:27Um, and it's also debatable as to whether or not it's really him as the
- 1:03:31goal or if it's just part of his psyche.
- 1:03:33But we can, we're not gonna do this again.
- 1:03:35Ryan : ghouls and we speak about ghosts.
- 1:03:37This leads me to my number 1 19 96, directed by n Ran by Peter Jackson.
- 1:03:43Um, it's got a great cast.
- 1:03:45Michael J. Fox.
- 1:03:46Jake Busey.
- 1:03:48John Astin.
- 1:03:48Jeffrey Combs, cha McBride, tri Lardo.
- 1:03:53Well, it's got a great score
- 1:03:54Kearns: Jake Busey makes everything creepier.
- 1:03:57Ryan : one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid.
- 1:03:59Kearns: That's my favorite thing you guys do, by the way.
- 1:04:02You don't skimp over good music every time there's a good score and stuff like that.
- 1:04:06Most of the times, I think, 'cause I'm sure somebody listening's like,
- 1:04:08no, he missed it on this episode.
- 1:04:10But you guys always do a good job of pointing out the music
- 1:04:14and I do appreciate that.
- 1:04:15Ryan : a kickass
- 1:04:16Kearns: Frighteners does have a kick ass score.
- 1:04:18Ryan : Ingle Boingo.
- 1:04:19Kearns: I don't know who that is, but I guess he's a, he's talent.
- 1:04:22Ryan : like, no, it's a name of a
- 1:04:25Kearns: Is that the monster that's in Lake Champlain?
- 1:04:29That's, oh
- 1:04:30Ryan : singer for a minute.
- 1:04:31Kearns: yeah.
- 1:04:32Ryan : it's like,
- 1:04:32Kearns: No,
- 1:04:33Ryan : I won't go
- 1:04:34Kearns: I'm musically stunted.
- 1:04:36Cool.
- 1:04:36Man.
- 1:04:38It's, I will circle back though.
- 1:04:40The Frighteners has a great, I remember the music.
- 1:04:43It's great.
- 1:04:43Ryan : Fox.
- 1:04:44Kearns: And also the movie itself is great.
- 1:04:45Ryan : two ghost pals and they're trying to get rid of the Reaper, by Jake Busey.
- 1:04:52But it's just the twists and turns.
- 1:04:54It's, need to cover that film too.
- 1:04:57We need to cover
- 1:04:58Kearns: So good.
- 1:04:59Ryan : No,
- 1:04:59Kearns: not ever remake that movie.
- 1:05:01I don't think it was ever big enough to be remade,
- 1:05:03Jon: But they will.
- 1:05:04Kearns: just good.
- 1:05:05I,
- 1:05:06Ryan : Don't say that.
- 1:05:07Yes.
- 1:05:10Kearns: I won't ever, like, you can't remake Jake Busey.
- 1:05:13They should re, they should cast his father in the remake as the
- 1:05:17Reaper and just, they'll tell anybody just to have it be Gary
- 1:05:20Ryan : What.
- 1:05:21Kearns: and they'll just be sitting there like, I like corn sausage
- 1:05:27every time he is been on camera.
- 1:05:28The o and clips that I've seen over the last year have just
- 1:05:31been him being full bore crazy.
- 1:05:36All right.
- 1:05:37So that was Frighteners.
- 1:05:38That's the number one.
- 1:05:40Um, John, where can people go to find these lists, by the way,
- 1:05:43Jon: We're
- 1:05:43Kearns: before you tell yours?
- 1:05:45Jon: on there, tracking all
- 1:05:48Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:48Letterboxed.
- 1:05:50Jon: on there as well.
- 1:05:51So you can go and follow us on there.
- 1:05:53Kearns: Hell yes, letterbox.
- 1:05:55I did a deep dive.
- 1:05:55Did John's doing good work on there.
- 1:05:57There's some chronicling
- 1:05:59Ryan : Check it out.
- 1:05:59Kearns: people, so go see what he's chronicled.
- 1:06:03Ryan : Ooh,
- 1:06:04Kearns: The Chronicles of Xenomania doesn't have a nice answer.
- 1:06:09That absolutely not.
- 1:06:10Jon: the unauthorized history.
- 1:06:13Kearns: Nice.
- 1:06:13Ryan : was a stormy night.
- 1:06:14Kearns: All right.
- 1:06:15John's gonna do his tough.
- 1:06:17Jon: interestingly, your number one in consideration for my list,
- 1:06:24Ryan : Oh,
- 1:06:24Jon: I, I
- 1:06:25Ryan : okay.
- 1:06:25Jon: I tightened it up.
- 1:06:26I tightened the category
- 1:06:28Kearns: Ooh,
- 1:06:29Jon: So mine is,
- 1:06:33Kearns: no.
- 1:06:34You should have been meaner.
- 1:06:34You should be like, it wasn't good enough for my list.
- 1:06:38Ryan : Frighten nurses on every level.
- 1:06:40Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:41Jon: I went with
- 1:06:43Kearns: Frighteners.
- 1:06:44Jon: hospitals.
- 1:06:46Ryan : Okay.
- 1:06:47Jon: Mental, I left the mental institutes off.
- 1:06:50That's a
- 1:06:50Kearns: Of course you did.
- 1:06:53Jon: These are just
- 1:06:54Ryan : So no.
- 1:06:56Okay.
- 1:06:56Kearns: It is a different list.
- 1:06:57Ryan : or maybe, oh, damn it.
- 1:07:01Jon: House on Haunted.
- 1:07:03So number five, we're gonna go to my favorite
- 1:07:06Kearns: Uh,
- 1:07:07Jon: George, a Romero's Diary of the Dead, which
- 1:07:11Ryan : Okay.
- 1:07:12Jon: is Diary of the Dead.
- 1:07:15Kearns: okay.
- 1:07:15Jon: will put a Romero
- 1:07:16Kearns: love that friend, those
- 1:07:18Jon: can, I'll make up, I'll make up a category just to put a, a Romero
- 1:07:23Kearns: Yep.
- 1:07:23Jon: it.
- 1:07:24Kearns: You're a huge Romero buff.
- 1:07:26Jon: So
- 1:07:26Kearns: I,
- 1:07:26Jon: Diary of the Dead is Romero's
- 1:07:28Kearns: that's cool.
- 1:07:30Jon: s zombie
- 1:07:31Kearns: love that.
- 1:07:32Jon: chronicling, uh, a group of young filmmakers in the beginning
- 1:07:36of the zombie apocalypse.
- 1:07:37And.
- 1:07:41Hospital seeking treatment for an injured friend and find that it's just
- 1:07:46zombie doctors and nurses at this point.
- 1:07:48Ryan : That is a cool premise.
- 1:07:50Jon: yeah,
- 1:07:51Kearns: Huh?
- 1:07:51Jon: definitely saw some pretty creepy imagery in there.
- 1:07:55Um, so jump onto number four.
- 1:07:59I feel like I've
- 1:08:00Kearns: I
- 1:08:00Jon: movie on a list before, I'm going with the void.
- 1:08:05Ryan : Okay.
- 1:08:06That's a good choice.
- 1:08:08Jon: the void is like Lovecraft and Nightmare.
- 1:08:11The cult surrounding a hospital trying to open a portal to a hellish dimension.
- 1:08:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:08:16Jon: It really fits in with the too.
- 1:08:19Ryan : Yeah, it does.
- 1:08:21Kearns: Yeah, it does.
- 1:08:21And that's like for the listeners, if, if people have a niche like George, a
- 1:08:25Romero might be John John's niche is horror, really, but like everybody's
- 1:08:29got their kind of preference.
- 1:08:31This type of movie is my, the endless, the void.
- 1:08:36Um, what is that stupid, what is it called?
- 1:08:38Black Triangle or some stupid name.
- 1:08:40Ryan : what you're.
- 1:08:40Kearns: That one where she's endlessly going through a loop continuously and
- 1:08:44like she, it might be the triangle.
- 1:08:46Yeah.
- 1:08:47Um, and then you get into movies like the adaptation of Van der Me's, um,
- 1:08:52Southern Reach, trilogy, annihilation.
- 1:08:55That's another one where there's like this changing of reality.
- 1:08:59I am so into that crap.
- 1:09:01So the void, as soon as he said The Void, I got like, you know, goose bumpy.
- 1:09:05That was a, that's a good one.
- 1:09:07And the movie itself is just, it slaps.
- 1:09:09You don't really know what's happening.
- 1:09:11And it's a little gory and you don't like, oh, it's a slasher, it's this, it's that.
- 1:09:14And it's way deeper than that.
- 1:09:16Yeah.
- 1:09:16Jon: expect it to.
- 1:09:18Um,
- 1:09:19Kearns: up.
- 1:09:19Jon: so my number three is another one.
- 1:09:20I feel like I maybe have put on a list before, but again, the
- 1:09:25element is too much to pass up.
- 1:09:27Uh, the sadness.
- 1:09:31Ryan : No, you didn't.
- 1:09:32You didn't put that on there, I don't think.
- 1:09:34Kearns: Listen.
- 1:09:35Sadness
- 1:09:36Jon: So the sadness is
- 1:09:39Kearns: call that Monday.
- 1:09:40Jon: a couple separated during the
- 1:09:42Kearns: It's a sadness.
- 1:09:43Jon: that turns its victims to sadistic, maniacs attempts to reunite.
- 1:09:48Um, so it's, is just like a pure Hong Kong zombie or fest.
- 1:09:56might be the glorious movie I've ever seen with some of the most,
- 1:10:02some of the, I don't want to go quite to repulsive, but repulsive
- 1:10:06would be a word that people would use to describe some of these scenes.
- 1:10:10But it's just so well made and so like, it's fun, but it's, if you're queasy,
- 1:10:16if you're squeamish, the sadness is not
- 1:10:20Kearns: Okay.
- 1:10:20Jon: for.
- 1:10:22Ryan : So.
- 1:10:24Kearns: Also, it's likely you shouldn't be here with us if you're
- 1:10:26queasy or s when, not necessarily a deal breaker, but pretty close.
- 1:10:32Pretty close.
- 1:10:33Jon: you of get into your mind like, can't get grocer from here.
- 1:10:38There's nothing worse that they can do.
- 1:10:42And there is.
- 1:10:43There is.
- 1:10:44Kearns: I get the point is to make us uncomfortable, but
- 1:10:47hospitals, the hospital, gore,
- 1:10:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:50Kearns: some reason, scalpels themselves as an instrument freak
- 1:10:54me out far more than chainsaws.
- 1:10:55Jon: gonna
- 1:10:56Ryan : the
- 1:10:56Kearns: I don't like the surgical precision of the slice.
- 1:10:58Jon: come up later on
- 1:11:00Kearns: Ugh.
- 1:11:01Jon: No,
- 1:11:01Kearns: Oh, great.
- 1:11:02Dr. Giggles number two.
- 1:11:04Jon: a
- 1:11:04Ryan : giggles.
- 1:11:05Jon: giggles.
- 1:11:05Kearns: Ugh.
- 1:11:06Jon: Number two, planet terror.
- 1:11:11Kearns: Okay.
- 1:11:11I don't even think
- 1:11:12Ryan : Yes.
- 1:11:12Jon: The Rob,
- 1:11:13Ryan : Yes.
- 1:11:17Jon: So
- 1:11:17Kearns: Got nothing.
- 1:11:18Oh, look at Ryan.
- 1:11:19Look at Ryan's eyes light up.
- 1:11:22Ryan : the hand scene,
- 1:11:25Jon: so
- 1:11:26Kearns: Nice.
- 1:11:27Forgot it.
- 1:11:27All right.
- 1:11:28That's Ryan House part.
- 1:11:29Okay.
- 1:11:29Jon: what I decided was side of war of the Roses style, spousal combat
- 1:11:37between the doctor's block, uh, Josh Rowland and Marley Shelton.
- 1:11:44And like she has the greatest lines in this movie, in, in this movie,
- 1:11:48like with, with her, her syringes.
- 1:11:51And these are my friends, a yellow friend to take this thing off.
- 1:11:57My little blue friend you'll barely feel.
- 1:12:00after my redheaded friend, you'll never see me again.
- 1:12:05It's just her series of, you know, shots to people
- 1:12:12effect on, on her.
- 1:12:14Kearns: mm-hmm.
- 1:12:18Ryan : Yeah.
- 1:12:21Kearns: Ugh.
- 1:12:21Ryan : Yeah.
- 1:12:22You're
- 1:12:22Kearns: laying those seeds in my mind.
- 1:12:24Ryan : though.
- 1:12:24He was a little, he's he's off kilter.
- 1:12:28Jon: Oh, he's,
- 1:12:29Kearns: Nah,
- 1:12:29Jon: a
- 1:12:30Kearns: I wish I was Josh Brolin and what a dream boat.
- 1:12:33Ryan : is
- 1:12:34Kearns: Nah, I'll take Josh Brolin and Goonies sober.
- 1:12:36All of 'em actually go Goonies Brolin.
- 1:12:40Jon: short
- 1:12:40Kearns: I wanna be, I wanna be weird Crop Top working out Josh Brolin in the 1980s.
- 1:12:46Yeah, headband.
- 1:12:48But the girl sewing to me, Josh Brolin.
- 1:12:53I don't wanna be
- 1:12:54Jon: is
- 1:12:55Kearns: Josh Brolin.
- 1:12:56Jon: sort of cheating because it's two, it's in the same franchise.
- 1:13:02So number one, Halloween two and Halloween kill
- 1:13:07Ryan : Yes.
- 1:13:08Jon: from
- 1:13:09Ryan : Yep.
- 1:13:10Jon: hot tubs.
- 1:13:13Kearns: Uh, Halloween two, I think is the scariest hospital scene, hot tub scene.
- 1:13:18Yep.
- 1:13:18Jon: scalpels and then Halloween pills.
- 1:13:22Listen, I know there are a lot of people who are, who crap on that trilogy.
- 1:13:28I think the first two are pretty solid and Halloween ends is a little messy.
- 1:13:37Ryan : Yes.
- 1:13:38Jon: that ho the hospital scenes and Halloween kills with the mob
- 1:13:45mentality portrayed the way it's, it's just so effective like that,
- 1:13:51those scenes, you can, you can see how people get swept up in that really.
- 1:13:58Ryan : And struck him down real quick.
- 1:14:01Jon: yeah.
- 1:14:03Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:14:05Jon: After.
- 1:14:09Because one person thinks he saw Michael Meyer or
- 1:14:13Ryan : You know what?
- 1:14:15I would've been happy in Halloween kills if they made a Fred Hollister reference.
- 1:14:20Remember when you killed Fred Hol, Ted Hollister?
- 1:14:23I'm sorry, Ted.
- 1:14:25Ted holster.
- 1:14:27Fred.
- 1:14:28It was Fred who was leading the mob.
- 1:14:30Jon: Yeah.
- 1:14:31Yeah.
- 1:14:32Ryan : RIP, Ted.
- 1:14:35Kearns: that's pretty solid.
- 1:14:36And I do love, I do love Halloween too, for being super scary.
- 1:14:40I do.
- 1:14:41Ryan's gonna go back into the transcript and change the time.
- 1:14:45By the way, for the beginning from six minutes to, I believe we're
- 1:14:50bordering, I think we're at 19.
- 1:14:52Jon: Thanks.
- 1:14:53Kearns: This might be a new record just because I was bitching about it.
- 1:14:56It's like a new record for the top fives.
- 1:14:58Partially my fault though.
- 1:14:59I butted in a lot this time.
- 1:15:01But that was funny.
- 1:15:02Um, those were good Top fives guys.
- 1:15:05That was awesome.
- 1:15:06Um, great.
- 1:15:07Top fives to end out Phantasm too,

- 1:15:19Jon: listen, if you're like me,
- 1:15:23if you're like me and
- 1:15:25Kearns: That's your K

- 1:15:33go on Amazon, pick up this book fiction.
- 1:15:37It's Don Selli written all stories within the Fanm
- 1:15:42Kearns: pH
- 1:15:44Jon: So if you, if you're not quite ready for Fanm to
- 1:15:47Kearns: sick.
- 1:15:49Jon: you got a little more.
- 1:15:52Ryan : See, that's cool.
- 1:15:53Kearns: That's awesome, dude.

- 1:15:58You plugged so much of his shit.
