- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 23 Dear Lord, please let us have eyes to see
- 0:06and ears to hear what you have to say in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:10This is entitled to adulterous sisters and similarly to Amir's
- 0:17commentary, this is a chapter I don't really have much to say
- 0:21on. Neither did he, but it's one you
- 0:24just want to kind of get through.
- 0:26There is quite a bit of material though, in the questions and
- 0:29answers from the Study Bible, so I will read those as we go
- 0:34along. So let's get started.
- 0:36The word of the Lord came to me. Son of man.
- 0:40There were two women, daughters of the same mother.
- 0:44They became prostitutes in Egypt, engaging in prostitution
- 0:48from their youth in that land. Their breasts were fondled and
- 0:52their virgin bosoms caressed. The older was named Aloha.
- 0:57And oh, I'm sorry, Ohola and her sister Oholiba.
- 1:04They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters.
- 1:09Ohola is Samaria and Oholiba is Jerusalem.
- 1:17Ohola engaged in prostitution while she was still mine, and
- 1:22she lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians, warriors clothed in
- 1:27blue, governors and commanders, all of them handsome young men
- 1:30and mounted horsemen. She gave herself as a prostitute
- 1:34to all the elite of the Assyrians, and defiled herself
- 1:37with all the idols of everyone she lusted after.
- 1:41She did not give up the prostitution and began in Egypt,
- 1:45when during her youth, men slept with her, caressed her virgin
- 1:49bosom, and poured out their lust on her.
- 1:53Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, the
- 1:56Assyrians, for whom she lusted. They stripped her naked, took
- 2:01away her sons and daughters, and killed her with the sword.
- 2:05She became a byword among women and punishment was inflicted on
- 2:09her. So I will read some of the
- 2:13questions and answers for this section.
- 2:15So who were Ohola and ohol liba? It is not entirely clear why
- 2:21these names were chosen for this parable.
- 2:24Both names are derived from the Hebrew word for tent, which is
- 2:29often used in tent of worship. The name Ohola used for Samaria,
- 2:35the capital city of the northern Kingdom of Israel, means her
- 2:40tent and might be paraphrased she who has her own tent.
- 2:46This would allude to the idolatrous Northern Kingdom's
- 2:49religious independence and rejection of the Jerusalem
- 2:53Temple. The name Oholiba used for
- 2:57Jerusalem, the capital city of the southern Kingdom of Judah,
- 3:02means my tent is in her, which may allude to the Jerusalem
- 3:08Temple, God's special dwelling place among His covenant people.
- 3:14Why were Syrian warriors clothed in blue?
- 3:19The royal blue, or purple was from a rare and expensive dye.
- 3:24It conveyed a sense of wealth, privilege, and royal standing.
- 3:28The rulers of Israel were impressed with the prosperity of
- 3:32their neighbors to the north, so they emulated them even at the
- 3:36expense of their own people. How was Samaria a byword among
- 3:41women? The exiled N northern Kingdom of
- 3:45Israel, whose capital city was Samaria, became an object of
- 3:49ridicule instead of being celebrated as a blessed.
- 3:53Instead of being celebrated as blessed and powerful, it became
- 3:59the topic of idle, malicious, and worthless gossip.
- 4:04OK, then we'll continue on. Her sister Uholiba saw this.
- 4:10This is the second one. Jerusalem saw this.
- 4:12Yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her
- 4:16sister. She too lusted after the
- 4:18Assyrians, governors and commanders, warriors in full
- 4:21dress, mounted horsemen, all handsome young men.
- 4:24I saw that she too defiled herself.
- 4:27Both of them went the same way, but she carried her prostitution
- 4:31still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall,
- 4:35figures of Chaldeans portrayed in red, with belts around their
- 4:40waist and flowing turbans on their heads.
- 4:43All of them look like Babylon chariot officers, natives of
- 4:48Chaldea. As soon as she saw them, she
- 4:51lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea.
- 4:56Then the Babylonians came to her to the bed of of love, and in
- 5:01their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled,
- 5:04defiled by then, she turned away from them in disgust.
- 5:09When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed
- 5:12her naked body, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I
- 5:17had turned away from her sister. Yet she became more and more
- 5:21promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth when she was a
- 5:25prostitute in Egypt. There she lusted after her
- 5:30lover, lovers whose genitals were like those of donkeys and
- 5:33whose emission was like that of horses.
- 5:36So she, so you longed for the lewdness of your youth when in
- 5:40Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breast fondled.
- 5:46So there's a couple questions and the answers on here.
- 5:48Who were these Chaldeans? The prostitute?
- 5:51Jerusalem or Judah was engaged in a vile pastime looking at
- 5:56provocative images of Chaldean men on the wall above her bed.
- 6:01Red was the color of arousal and sexual imitation as in the
- 6:07modern day phrase red light district.
- 6:10These Chaldean lovers symbolized how Jerusalem or Judah had
- 6:14prostituted herself, participated in the Pagan
- 6:17worship of other people after courting the Babylonians.
- 6:22Why did Jerusalem become disgusted with them?
- 6:26Judah allied with the Babylonians against their once
- 6:29powerful oppressors. Oppressors the Assyrians The
- 6:33Babylonians conquered Assyria, defeated the Egyptians as at Kar
- 6:39Kemesh in six O 5 BC and emerged as the most powerful empire in
- 6:44the ancient Near East. At that point Judah realized
- 6:48that the Babylonians were just as imperialistic and oppressive
- 6:52as the Assyrians had been. Judah then embarked on an anti
- 6:56Babylonian policy that eventually led to her demise.
- 7:03So continuing on in the chapter. Therefore, Oholiba, this is what
- 7:09the sovereign Lord says. I will stir up your lovers
- 7:12against you, those who turned away, those you turned away from
- 7:17in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every
- 7:21side. The Babylonians and all the
- 7:24Chaldeans, the men of Pekkad and Shoah and KOA, and all the
- 7:29Assyrians with them, handsome young men, all of them,
- 7:33governors and commanders, chariot officers and men of Ha
- 7:37Rink, all mounted on horses. They will come against you with
- 7:41weapons, Chariots and wagons, with a throng of people.
- 7:46They will take up positions against you on every side, with
- 7:50large and small Shields and with helmets.
- 7:54I will turn you over to them for punishment, and they will punish
- 7:58you according to their standards.
- 8:02I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal
- 8:06with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and
- 8:10your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by sword.
- 8:15They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you
- 8:18who are left will be consumed by fire.
- 8:22They will also strip you of your clothes and take your fine
- 8:26jewelry. So I will put a stop to the
- 8:28lewdness and prostitution you began in Egypt.
- 8:32You will not look on these things with longing or remember
- 8:36Egypt any more, for this is what the Sovereign Lord says.
- 8:40I'm about to deliver you into the hands of those you hate, to
- 8:45those you turned away from in disgust.
- 8:48They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything
- 8:51you have worked for. They will leave you stark naked
- 8:54and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed.
- 8:57Your lewdness and promiscuity have brought this on you because
- 9:02you have lustered after the nations and defiled yourself
- 9:05with their idols. You have gone the way of your
- 9:08sister. I will put her cup into your
- 9:11hand. And when this is something that
- 9:16the cup of wrath, this is a comment that I do have, that
- 9:20there is a cup of wrath, that that's how it's described as a
- 9:25cup of drink, the cup of wrath. So that is what came to mind as
- 9:30I read that verse 32. This is what the Sovereign Lord
- 9:33says. You will drink your sister's
- 9:36cup, a cup large and deep. It will bring scorn and
- 9:40derision, for it holds so much. You will be filled with
- 9:44drunkenness and sorrow, the cup of rune and desolation, the cup
- 9:50of your sister Samaria. So I'm going to pause here
- 9:54because there's some questions and answers on this page and
- 9:56we'll cover that. Why is such repulsive imagery
- 10:00used? The graphic imagery depicts
- 10:02Egypt as a lusty mate with whom the promiscuous as a lust.
- 10:08I'm sorry. The graphic imagery depicts
- 10:11Egypt as a lusty male with whom the promiscuous female Jerusalem
- 10:16desired intercourse. The reality behind the repulsive
- 10:20imagery was Judah's obsessive desire for a political alliance
- 10:25with Egypt, which God considered indecent.
- 10:29When Judah looked to Egypt for help, Egypt was more than happy
- 10:33to oblige. Egypt wanted to establish a
- 10:37buffer state in the Land of Israel to challenge Babylonian
- 10:42dominance in the Ancient Near East.
- 10:46What was the difference between Babylonians and Chaldeans?
- 10:50The Chaldeans were a group of southern Mesopotamian tribes who
- 10:55took control of Babylon in the late 7th century BC and defeated
- 11:01the Assyrians. They established the Neo
- 11:05Babylonian Empire, which included the native Babylonian
- 11:08population and some Aramean tribes.
- 11:13This verse makes a distinction between the Chaldeans, the
- 11:16dominant ethnic group, and the Babylonians, perhaps a reference
- 11:20to non Chaldean residents of Babylon.
- 11:25Why mutilate victims? Mutilating the face of an
- 11:28adulteress was a common ancient Mesopotamian practice.
- 11:33An Assyrian law allowed a man to cut off his adulterous wife's
- 11:39nose. If he chose to do so, he also
- 11:43had to castrate her lover, Jerusalem, personified, as an
- 11:48adulterous woman, would be punished for her unfaithfulness
- 11:53in this way. What?
- 11:55And then the next question Answer.
- 11:57What cup is this? This refers to the cup of God's
- 12:00judgment, a cup of despair and woe.
- 12:04Samaria, Jerusalem's long disdained sister was has known
- 12:11woe and ruin. She now gives this cup of
- 12:15suffering and lament and lament to Jerusalem to drink from.
- 12:20The imagery is dark. Once the cup is drunk dry, the
- 12:24people of God will tear their own chest.
- 12:27It conveys stark suffering. Then the Bible addresses the
- 12:33next Top 100 most asked questions.
- 12:36What does the Bible say about the dangers of pornography?
- 12:41Because of the time and culture in which the Bible was written,
- 12:45no Internet, printed page or video, pornography isn't
- 12:50directly discussed in the Bible. However, the parable of Israel's
- 12:55unfaithfulness in Ezekiel 23, verses one through 49 provides
- 13:00an interesting commentary on how images can seduce and corrupt.
- 13:06Verse 14 describes a woman who represents Jerusalem who saw
- 13:11figures of men drawn on a wall. As soon as she saw them, she
- 13:16lusted after them. Not only did these depictions
- 13:20stir up lust, they also fed her to seek out men with whom to
- 13:24have sex. This is exactly what pornography
- 13:27does. It arouses within people impure
- 13:30and unhealthy sexual desires and intensifies sexual temptation.
- 13:36Pornographic images and the idea of instant sexual pleasure can
- 13:42dominate the way a person thinks about God's gift of sex.
- 13:46Here's the bottom line. Pornography takes something
- 13:49beautiful, which is meant to be shared intimately between 2
- 13:53married people and twisted into something selfish and demeaning.
- 13:59Furthermore, there are two other biblical principles that can be
- 14:02applied to the issue of pornography.
- 14:05Number one, we should fill our minds only with true, noble, and
- 14:10pure thoughts. That's found in Philippians
- 14:12chapter 4, verse 8. No matter what sins we've
- 14:16committed in the past, we're never too dirty to be forgiven
- 14:19and cleansed by God. And that's found in First
- 14:22Corinthians chapter 6, verse 9 through 11, continuing on in
- 14:30verse 34 from the book from chapter 23.
- 14:33You will drink it, referring to the cup, you will drink it and
- 14:37drain it dry and chew on its pieces, and you will tear your
- 14:41breast. I have spoken, declares the
- 14:43sovereign Lord. Therefore, this is what the
- 14:46sovereign Lord says. Since you have forgotten me and
- 14:50turned your back on me, you must bear the consequences of your
- 14:53lewdness and prostitution. The Lord said to me, Son of man,
- 14:58will you judge Ohola and Oholaba?
- 15:02Then confront them with their detestable practices, for they
- 15:05have committed adultery and blood is on their hands.
- 15:10They committed adultery with their idols.
- 15:13They even sacrificed their children whom they boredom me as
- 15:17food for them. They have also done this to me
- 15:22at the same time. They defiled my sanctuary and
- 15:25desecrated my Sabbath's. On the very day they sacrificed
- 15:29their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and
- 15:33desecrated it. That is what they did in my
- 15:36house. They even sent messengers for
- 15:39men who came from far away, and when they arrived, you bathed
- 15:43yourself for them, applied eye makeup, and put on your jewelry.
- 15:48You sat on an elegant couch with a table spread before it, on
- 15:52which you had placed the incense and olive oil that belonged to
- 15:55me. The noise of a carefree crowd
- 15:59was around her. Drunkards were brought from the
- 16:02desert, along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets
- 16:06on the wrist of the woman and her sister, and beautiful crowns
- 16:10on their head. Then I said about the one worn
- 16:13out by adultery. Now let them use her as a
- 16:17prostitute, for that is all she is, and they slept with her.
- 16:22As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with these lewd
- 16:27women, Ohola and Aholiba. But righteous judges will
- 16:33sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and
- 16:37shed blood because they are adulterous and blood is on their
- 16:42hands. This is what the Sovereign Lord
- 16:44says. Bring a mob against them and
- 16:47give them over to terror and plunder.
- 16:50The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords.
- 16:54They will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their
- 16:57houses. So I will put an end to lewdness
- 17:00in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate
- 17:05you. You will suffer the penalty of
- 17:07your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of
- 17:10idolatry. Then you will know that I am the
- 17:14Sovereign Lord. So the remaining questions and
- 17:21answers Why would parents sacrifice their children?
- 17:25They probably thought by appeasing the Pagan gods they
- 17:28could improve their quality of life.
- 17:30Life's harsh realities. Example, high infant mortality
- 17:34may have prompted some to place a lower value on children than
- 17:38adults. Some neighboring cultures
- 17:40abandoned unwanted infants to die.
- 17:44Others didn't name their children until they were older
- 17:47and more likely to survive. The thought of murdering
- 17:50children shocks us. But the Israelites who were
- 17:53calloused by the Pagan views around them appear not to have
- 17:57been alarmed by it. And as I said before with this
- 18:01explanation came up, that's kind of like the nation that we are
- 18:05in right now when it comes to abortion.
- 18:08People are not alarmed by it, but yet it's the same thing.
- 18:11It's ending the life of a human being.
- 18:15And something that we need to really consider when this
- 18:23subject is addressed, I guess, in legislation, because it does
- 18:27come up in legislation. And are we going to be
- 18:30supportive of God's word? Are we going to stand up and
- 18:33support what God support God's law?
- 18:38Are we going to go against it? If we go against it, we can be
- 18:43certain that there will come judgement for that.
- 18:47OK, the next question and answer.
- 18:49In what sense had children been born to the Lord?
- 18:53Within the allegoric framework of the chapter?
- 18:56Samaria and Jerusalem were viewed as the Lord's wives who
- 19:00had borne Him children. These children belong to Him,
- 19:04but His wives had the audacity to sacrifice them to idols.
- 19:09Who were these men from far away?
- 19:11This suggests a kind of summit meeting with men from faraway
- 19:15nations. Judah's leaders tried to create
- 19:18an alliance to avert the Babylonian invasion, but they
- 19:21were relying on human protection to prevent God's judgment
- 19:26instead of repenting from sin. That seems very relevant today
- 19:32with what's happening like in the Middle East is, is God being
- 19:38consulted on all of this or is there a not the Middle East?
- 19:44I would say the whole world, because it seems like the whole
- 19:47world is all these different armies are building up their
- 19:50power and you know that it just doesn't seem like that's going
- 19:56to go very well for the world. And you know, the absence of
- 20:01God. No one's relying on God, and
- 20:03everyone's looking at their. Their own ways of protection
- 20:10instead of repenting from sin. So there are like God did
- 20:15command people to go to war sometimes to eliminate enemies,
- 20:19but the overall message in the Bible is repent.
- 20:25Repent from sin and trust God. So the last question in or no,
- 20:31there were two more. So who were these drunkards?
- 20:34These were the descendants of Seba, son of Cush from Genesis
- 20:38chapter 10, verse 7, known for their height.
- 20:42They lived either on the Arabian Peninsula in Sheba, which is
- 20:46modern day Yemen, or in Africa in ancient Ethiopia, modern day
- 20:52Sudan. There is a close association of
- 20:55Seba with Egypt and Cush, ancient Ethiopia, modern day
- 21:01Sudan. And you can see this from the
- 21:04book of Isaiah in chapter 43, verse 3 and chapter 45 verse
- 21:10verse 14. It's always interesting when
- 21:13they they put I'm going to read that verse because I don't quite
- 21:17remember that it was verse 23, verse 40.
- 21:20True, true. OK, the noise of a carefree
- 21:23crowd was around her. Drunkards were brought from the
- 21:27desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets
- 21:31on the wrist of the of the woman and her sister and beautiful
- 21:34crowns on their heads. So that's the verse it was
- 21:37referring to. OK then were women punished
- 21:42differently than men for adultery and murder?
- 21:46According to the Old Testament law, both adulterous men and
- 21:50women were to be executed by stoning, and that's found in
- 21:54Deuteronomy chapter 22, verses 22 through 24.
- 21:59It is uncertain if this law was consistently applied in ancient
- 22:03Israel. And that wraps up chapter 23,
- 22:08which I'm glad. So next time we will cover
- 22:11chapter 24 and I, if you're not subscribed and you want to stay
- 22:16in the word, please subscribe and share this if you find it,
- 22:22this podcast show with whomever you want.
