Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready to teach some Dutch today? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing from last episode's pharmacy phrases. But what's today's topic? Lucas: We're tackling the post office — specifically sending a package. It's something you'll definitely need if you ever live in the Netherlands. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I once tried to mail a scarf to a friend and had no idea what to say. Lucas: Exactly. And you know, Fexingo is all about helping you with real situations. If this podcast has been helpful for your Dutch, consider supporting us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It keeps the show ad-free and focused on what matters. Luna: Yeah, I love that we don't have ads. It feels like we're just chatting and learning. Definitely worth supporting if you can. Lucas: So back to the post office. The first phrase you'll need is: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. That means 'I want to send a package.' Luna: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. Say it again slowly, Lucas? Lucas: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. Pakketje is 'package,' versturen is 'to send.' Luna: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. Got it! Lucas: Now, you'll probably want to ask about cost: Hoeveel kost het om dit te versturen? — 'How much does it cost to send this?' Luna: Hoeveel kost het om dit te versturen? That's a mouthful but I'll try. Hoeveel kost het om dit te versturen? Lucas: Perfect. And you can also ask: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? — 'Where can I drop off a package?' Luna: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? That sounds like 'where can I a package drop off' — I'm getting the hang of the word order. Lucas: Yeah, the verb goes to the end in Dutch. So afgeven is 'to drop off.' Let's practice that one more time: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? Luna: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? Good. Lucas: Now, if you're sending internationally, you'll say: Ik wil dit naar het buitenland sturen. Buitenland means 'abroad.' Luna: Ik wil dit naar het buitenland sturen. Is 'buitenland' like 'outside country'? Lucas: Exactly! Buiten means 'outside,' land means 'country.' So buitenland is 'abroad.' Luna: Cool. And how long does delivery take? I'd ask: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Lucas: Yes! Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Bezorging is 'delivery.' Let's say it together: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Luna: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? That's a handy one. Lucas: Let's run through all five phrases one more time. Repeat after me: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. Luna: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. Lucas: Hoeveel kost het om dit te versturen? Luna: Hoeveel kost het om dit te versturen? Lucas: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? Luna: Waar kan ik een pakketje afgeven? Lucas: Ik wil dit naar het buitenland sturen. Luna: Ik wil dit naar het buitenland sturen. Lucas: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Luna: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Lucas: Great job! Now imagine you're at the post office. You walk up and say: Ik wil een pakketje versturen. The clerk asks: 'Waar naartoe?' You say: Naar het buitenland. Then you ask: Hoeveel kost het? And they tell you the price. Luna: That sounds doable. And if they ask how long it takes, I can ask: Hoe lang duurt de bezorging? Perfect. Lucas: Exactly. And that's today's episode. Practice these phrases, and next time you're at a Dutch post office, you'll be ready. Luna: Thanks, Lucas! See you next time for more Dutch with Fexingo. Lucas: Tot ziens!
