- 0:00Kara: How are you?
- 0:01Oh my God, we're back.
- 0:02Dani: We're back, guys.
- 0:03Kara: Thank you for waiting all this time.
- 0:05Dani: Yeah, we had to take some time off.
- 0:07Kara: We did some travel.
- 0:08Dani: We're busy.
- 0:09We're busy people.
- 0:10Kara: We're busy girls, it's true.
- 0:11Dani: But I missed this.
- 0:12Kara: I did.
- 0:13I did too.
- 0:13Dani: I was really excited to sit down and watch the episode today.
- 0:16Kara: Me too.
- 0:16It was a good episode.
- 0:17Dani: It was a very good episode.
- 0:18Kara: Really set the scene for, I guess, the rest of the season.
- 0:21Dani: I don't know what was happening to my Disney Plus, but it dropped me,
- 0:25like, in the middle of the episode.
- 0:26Kara: It said bye.
- 0:27Dani: And I was like, "Hold on, everyone's hair is different. What's going on?"
- 0:31And then I realized, and I rewound, but-
- 0:33Kara: Bay's hair is much longer.
- 0:35Dani: Yeah, it looked really good though.
- 0:36Kara: Gorgeous.
- 0:37Dani: Gorgeous, gorgeous.
- 0:38I have to tell you about the dream I had.
- 0:40Kara: Oh, that's right.
- 0:40Dani: I remembered today.
- 0:42Okay, I had a dream.
- 0:43You- do you ever have the classic I'm on stage or I'm in a play and
- 0:48I don't know any of my lines dream?
- 0:51Does that ever happen to you?
- 0:52Kara: I'm sure I have.
- 0:53Dani: Did you do theater as a kid?
- 0:54Kara: Nope.
- 0:55Dani: Okay.
- 0:55Sorry that I wasn't sure.
- 0:57'Cause I don't have, like, sports dreams.
- 0:59I don't know if you've ever had, like, a-
- 1:00Kara: No, I never had, like sports dreams.
- 1:02I, my school nightmares are always, like, I had a, I have a test and I
- 1:06didn't realize and I didn't study.
- 1:08Or like I, I ha- some- I still have these, but, like, I have a dream
- 1:13that, like, I actually didn't graduate high school, and now I have to-
- 1:16Dani: Yes.
- 1:17Yes.
- 1:17Or, like, it's the end of the semester, and someone's like,
- 1:20"How's that math class going?" Yes.
- 1:22And I'm like, "What math class?" And I haven't been the whole time, and
- 1:25I, like, show up, and they're like, "You have 34 incomplete assignments."
- 1:28Kara: Yes.
- 1:29I still get them.
- 1:30Dani: I get those all the time.
- 1:31Kara: And I'm almost 30.
- 1:32Dani: Yeah.
- 1:32So.
- 1:33Yeah.
- 1:33No, this was… I get ones where it's like, hey, you're in this play that
- 1:38you've known about for a long time.
- 1:41Kara: Oh, go on.
- 1:42Go on.
- 1:42Dani: And I'm like, oh, my God, and it's, like, half, like, I don't
- 1:45know my lines and half the shame of, like, I've forgotten, too.
- 1:49So I'm underprepared.
- 1:50So this version- this version of this dream was you being like, we need a
- 1:56hearing person in this completely deaf production of a play that I'm working on.
- 2:03Kara: It sounds like something I would say.
- 2:04Dani: Right.
- 2:05And, and w- like, we need you to be, we need the person
- 2:08to be hearing for X reason.
- 2:10Like, it made sense in the thing, but you were like, anyway, just go out there.
- 2:15And I was like, "What do you mean?" And you were like, "We're not gonna
- 2:18give you a script for some reason.
- 2:20And also we're not gonna, like, practice at all."
- 2:23Kara: So just ad lib it?
- 2:24Dani: So just, like, ad lib it.
- 2:26Kara: Okay.
- 2:26Dani: So then I'm on stage, and then you and, like, three people that
- 2:31I've never seen before and then the actress that plays Principal Rose are
- 2:36sitting, like, behind, like, the table that sometimes, like, directors are
- 2:40sat at in rehearsals, but the- mind you, there's a full audience, and you
- 2:44guys are all signing at me what I'm supposed to be saying in the show.
- 2:51Kara: Wow.
- 2:51Okay.
- 2:52Dani: But I can't understand you.
- 2:54Kara: Do you know sign in this dream?
- 2:57Dani: Yeah.
- 2:57But I, like, can't see you close enough.
- 2:59And then there's people on stage doing things, and I'm just there.
- 3:03Kara: That is stressful.
- 3:04Dani: Yeah.
- 3:05Kara: And I'm sorry I did that to you.
- 3:06Dani: Yeah, it was fucked up.
- 3:07And even in the dream I was arguing with you, being like, "This feels
- 3:10not like a good decision." And you were like, "No, no, trust me."
- 3:14Kara: I have a vision.
- 3:15Dani: Yeah.
- 3:16So yeah, your vision involved me being brutally shamed by the audience.
- 3:22Kara: Maybe you wronged me and I wanted to do it back.
- 3:24Dani: I wronged dream you?
- 3:26Kara: Maybe.
- 3:26Dani: Maybe.
- 3:27Kara: I also wanted to share two things.
- 3:29One, everyone, I got glasses, which is really ironic because in the last episode,
- 3:34season one, episode three, I said my worst nightmare was getting glasses.
- 3:38Dani: Yeah.
- 3:39Kara: And then truly, a few weeks later, I went to get a vision test, and then
- 3:44they said, "You need glasses," and then I fell to my knees, but it's fine.
- 3:48Dani: Didn't they say that you could power through?
- 3:50Kara: Yes, but once I put them on, I was like, "Wow, they actually really help."
- 3:55Dani: Have you considered contacts?
- 3:57Kara: No.
- 3:57I don't wanna stick my fingers in my eyes.
- 3:59Dani: Okay.
- 3:59Kara: They scare me.
- 4:01Dani: Okay.
- 4:02Kara: You do contacts, right?
- 4:03Dani: Yeah.
- 4:03I could not see you right now if not for the things in my eyes.
- 4:07Kara: I know.
- 4:07Yeah, I don't know.
- 4:08I have like a baby, baby prescription, but- I just-
- 4:11Dani: I also don't wear my glasses for sensory reasons.
- 4:14Kara: Mm. If I wear them for a long time, they do hurt my ears 'cause I have a bunch
- 4:19of shit going on, on my ears already.
- 4:21And then the second thing I wanted to mention was I got a new
- 4:24audiologist, and I went to see her for the first time on Thursday.
- 4:29Dani: Okay.
- 4:29Kara: And I go in.
- 4:31When I filled out the form many months ago, I think I got this
- 4:34audiologist in, like, June, and the appointment was for September
- 4:3917th, whatever that Thursday was.
- 4:40Dani: Damn, long wait.
- 4:41Kara: But I wanted it for after I came back from traveling.
- 4:45So I was like, "Okay, I'm gonna set it for that time."
- 4:48And they asked if I wanted an interpreter, and I was like, "Sure." But I didn't think
- 4:51they would actually do it, but they did.
- 4:52Dani: Okay.
- 4:53Kara: Which was impressive.
- 4:54An interpreter was there waiting for me.
- 4:56Great.
- 4:56Dani: Great.
- 4:57Kara: I go in.
- 4:58Audiologist is nice, and then the mapping for the, cochlear implants
- 5:03is in her tiny office, and it's the audiologist, the interpreter,
- 5:07me, and then an audiology resident.
- 5:10Dani: Okay.
- 5:10Kara: So it's like clowns in a little car.
- 5:12Dani: That's a lot of people.
- 5:13Kara: It's a lot of people in this small office.
- 5:14It was a little much, and we had to, like, configure the room in such a way
- 5:18that I could see the interpreter but also the audiologist at the same time.
- 5:22Dani: Mm-hmm.
- 5:22Kara: But then the resident was like, "I need to be near the computer."
- 5:25And I was like, "Okay." Okay.
- 5:27All right, girl.
- 5:28I kind of want you out of here, but fine.
- 5:30Dani: You know you can kick them out.
- 5:32Kara: I know, but at that point I already said yes.
- 5:34Dani: They make you feel so guilty though.
- 5:35Kara: No, they're like, "Please, it's for my education."
- 5:38Dani: "It's my credits."
- 5:39Kara: "It's for my education, please." I was like, "Okay, fine."
- 5:42And then Cochlear is such a narc because it tells you how, how many times a day
- 5:49you take it off your head, and then how long you have it on, on average every day.
- 5:55Dani: Wait, it tells you or it tells them?
- 5:57Kara: It's on, like, a computer.
- 5:59Dani: Snitch!
- 6:00Kara: Yeah.
- 6:00So the-
- 6:01Dani: Wait, that's your private data.
- 6:03Kara: Literally.
- 6:04So the audiologist is like, "So I'm looking at this, and it
- 6:08tells me you wear them less than four hours on average every day.
- 6:13Why is that?" And I'm like, "Well, I know another language, as you can tell, 'cause
- 6:18the interpreter is right next to you."
- 6:19Dani: Yes.
- 6:20Kara: And I was like, "I don't really need them all day 'cause my wife signs,
- 6:24and many of my friends sign, and I also work remote most days of the week,
- 6:30and I- I'm a programmer, so, like, I don't need to be yapping with people."
- 6:34Dani: Yeah.
- 6:35Kara: So those are all the reasons.
- 6:37And then she was like, "Naughty, naughty, bad, bad."
- 6:40Dani: What?
- 6:40Kara: "You have to wear them at least 12 hours a day." And I was like, "12?
- 6:44I'd rather kill myself."
- 6:46Dani: Also, what do you mean you have to?
- 6:48Kara: Yeah, so this is when I started challenging it.
- 6:50I was like, "So what do you mean by have to?" She was like, "It's for your ear."
- 6:55And I was like, "Is it for my ear's health? 'Cause the ears
- 6:57don't work. That's why we're here."
- 7:00Dani: I have some bad news for you about the state of the ear.
- 7:02Kara: Yeah.
- 7:03And she was like, "You have to wear them at least 12 hours a day.
- 7:06That's the recommended, because the more you wear them, the more
- 7:10we can increase the volume."
- 7:12And I was like, "So this has nothing to do with the health of my ear?
- 7:16I'm confused.
- 7:17And I've been doing this my whole life." And she was like, "But surely,
- 7:21don't you think your life would be easier if you had them on all day?" And
- 7:24I was like, "I have been doing that.
- 7:26I grew up doing that." "And it's overstimulating, and it hurts
- 7:29my head, and it makes me grumpy, and I'm tired all the time.
- 7:32I don't want that." And then she was like, "Okay, fine.
- 7:35You're an adult.
- 7:36I can't make you do 12 hours a day."
- 7:38Dani: What the fuck is this woman's problem?
- 7:39Kara: She was like, "Just at least bump it up a little bit."
- 7:42Dani: No.
- 7:43Fuck you.
- 7:44They're your ears.
- 7:45Kara: And then at that point, I was like, well, there's no use in fighting because
- 7:49I, I feel trapped in this tiny little room, and everyone's looking at me.
- 7:52Dani: Also, hopefully you've already decided, wow, I need
- 7:55to get a new audiologist.
- 7:56Kara: The thing is, she actually did a great map of my cochlear implants.
- 8:00'Cause I explained, I was like, "The reason I don't wear them so often is
- 8:03that they are so overstimulating and loud," and she actually did fix that.
- 8:06Dani: Okay.
- 8:07Kara: So I was like, "Okay, you did a great job."
- 8:09Oh, also when we were having this tiny little fight, I was like, "Do you have
- 8:12other clients who sign?" And she was like, "Yes." And I was like, "So you, you know."
- 8:18Dani: Yeah.
- 8:19Kara: So I'm confused, but this is Audiology 101.
- 8:22Like, I was talking to Sarit and some other Deaf friends about this, and they
- 8:26were like, someone was saying, like, "I have hard-of-hearing audiologist, like
- 8:31wears hearing aids, and he even tells me that I need to wear them all the time."
- 8:35It's like in Audiology 101 handbook.
- 8:37You need to be weird and ableist and all this about it.
- 8:40Dani: Oh my God.
- 8:41You're stronger than me.
- 8:43In that tiny little room.
- 8:45Kara: No, I wanted to go to the bathroom.
- 8:47I wanted to march out and go to the bathroom and like, take a break.
- 8:49I turned to the interpreter to kind of be like, "Can you believe this girl?"
- 8:53Dani: Yeah.
- 8:54Kara: But she was being too professional and, like, didn't really engage with it.
- 8:57Dani: Yeah.
- 8:57Kara: And I was like, well, what's the point of having an interpreter
- 8:59if you can't, like, silently bitch?
- 9:01Yeah, so that's my, spiel from Thursday.
- 9:04Dani: I'm fucking sorry, dude.
- 9:05Kara: No, it's all right.
- 9:06Dani: That is so irritating.
- 9:08Kara: Story of our lives.
- 9:09It happens all the time.
- 9:10Should we actually get to the episode?
- 9:12Dani: Let's get to the episode.
- 9:26Kara: Season two, episode one, The Door to Freedom, which aired January 7th, 2013.
- 9:32Dani: Wow.
- 9:33In true fashion, I did not look up the painting.
- 9:35Kara: Of course you didn't.
- 9:36It's a Rene, it's a Magritte painting.
- 9:38Dani: Oh.
- 9:38Kara: You know, the surrealist artist?
- 9:401933 painting.
- 9:42It's a window, and the window pane has been shattered, and there's
- 9:46shards of glass on the floor.
- 9:47And you can see a landscape through the window, but then also the
- 9:51shattered glass looks like it's been painted on and matches the
- 9:56landscape, kind of like puzzle pieces.
- 9:58I'll be honest, I had trouble tying this painting to the episode.
- 10:01Dani: I think they just wanted to do a Magritte 'cause they did one last time.
- 10:05Kara: Oh, right.
- 10:05The first one was This Is Not a Pipe.
- 10:07Dani: Yeah.
- 10:07Kara: I'll give that.
- 10:07Dani: We can chalk it up to that.
- 10:09Kara: A little recap on where we left off.
- 10:11Angelo got $5 million from the trial, and there's a pregnant woman in the mix.
- 10:16Dani: Yeah.
- 10:17Kara: Don't know what that's about yet.
- 10:19Daphne-
- 10:19Dani: Hmm.
- 10:21We know.
- 10:21Kara: We do know, but they haven't told us who it is yet.
- 10:23Dani: They haven't told us.
- 10:24Kara: Daphne and Chef Jeff are no more, and Daphne quit the kitchen job.
- 10:28Bay tried to drive off to Mexico, but Emmett came to rescue her.
- 10:32Dani: Yeah, we got the I will always come find you moment.
- 10:34Kara: We did.
- 10:35Dani: So cute.
- 10:36Kara: And then Travis is having issues at home and he's been sleeping at work.
- 10:40Dani: Yeah.
- 10:41Kara: So that's a basic recap.
- 10:43Dani: Yeah.
- 10:43Also, the Kennishes got no money from that lawsuit.
- 10:47Kara: $1.
- 10:48Dani: $1.
- 10:49Kara: Later they say actually 66 cents-
- 10:51Dani: 66
- 10:51… Kara: 'cause of tax, which I think- I thought was funny.
- 10:53Dani: And then yeah, Regina and Angelo are still-
- 10:56Kara: Married.
- 10:56Dani: Now married.
- 10:57Kara: Yes, and she, I guess, is entitled to half the money.
- 11:01Dani: Yeah.
- 11:02Kara: Okay.
- 11:02Dani: Angelo's insistent on that, but she has not-
- 11:07Kara: Yet
- 11:07… Dani: said yes.
- 11:08Kara: We start the episode, we're in the Kennish kitchen.
- 11:11There's a new Bay in town.
- 11:12Because she is up early, she made a fresh pot of coffee for the family.
- 11:17She got sticky caramel buns, and she is studying.
- 11:20Dani: And her hair looks fantastic.
- 11:22Kara: Her hair is beautiful.
- 11:23Dani: It's so long.
- 11:24Kara: It's grown, like, a foot longer.
- 11:25Dani: Yeah.
- 11:26Her hair grew, and then Daphne cut her hair, so it was… I was
- 11:29like, how much time has passed?
- 11:31Kara: Yeah.
- 11:31Dani: It's very unclear.
- 11:32They don't specify.
- 11:33Kara: No, they do not, but they're still in school.
- 11:36So it's the middle of the school year, I guess.
- 11:38Dani: Yeah.
- 11:38Which, what time, when did we-
- 11:39Kara: But then they said it's been six weeks since Daphne quit her job, so
- 11:44I think only six weeks have passed.
- 11:45Dani: Okay.
- 11:46Yeah, Melody did say that.
- 11:47You're right, later on.
- 11:48Kara: So it's been six weeks since-
- 11:49Dani: Shout out to Melody.
- 11:50She's really holding it down this episode.
- 11:52Kara: With the timeline.
- 11:53Dani: Yeah.
- 11:53Kara: Yeah.
- 11:53Thank you, Melody.
- 11:55Daphne is also up early.
- 11:56She's doing, sort of a disordered eating phase right now.
- 11:59Dani: Yeah.
- 11:59She said, "What if we, what if we fucked up my life a little more?"
- 12:03Kara: I need to change my body so I can win back Chef Jeff.
- 12:06Dani: Yeah.
- 12:06Kara: I just ran six miles-
- 12:08Dani: Yuck.
- 12:09Kara: Did 100 sit-ups and 10 pushups.
- 12:11Dani: The 10 pushups felt almost sad.
- 12:13Kara: Pushups are hard.
- 12:14Dani: They're really hard.
- 12:15I was just like, what's going on?
- 12:17They, it's not a well-balanced routine, I guess, is my point.
- 12:19Kara: Her arms are like twigs.
- 12:20Dani: Yeah.
- 12:21Kara: Of course she can only do 10.
- 12:22Dani: I know, and she's not eating anything.
- 12:24Kara: No.
- 12:24Throughout the whole episode, people are offering her food, and she's like, "No."
- 12:27Dani: Yeah.
- 12:28Kara: "I'm good."
- 12:28Dani: She says, "I haven't been hungry lately."
- 12:31Kara: I get it.
- 12:31She's probably so sad.
- 12:32Dani: I know.
- 12:33Kara: And Regina's like, "What's that about?" And she's like, "Oh, you know,
- 12:36I'm just trying to get into shape."
- 12:38And then at the same time, we see her open her phone, and there
- 12:41are many, many green bubbles-
- 12:43Dani: [GROANS]
- 12:43Kara: of sending texts to Chef Jeff.
- 12:45Truly, it-
- 12:46Dani: Hurt my stomach.
- 12:47Kara: Yeah.
- 12:48Dani: But Regina's so clueless.
- 12:49She's, like, "waiting to hear from someone?" It's only been six weeks.
- 12:54Kara: You should know.
- 12:54Dani: You should obviously know.
- 12:56Kara: She still has her wrist brace on, too, so she's not working.
- 13:00Dani: Yeah.
- 13:01So she has time to pay attention.
- 13:03Kara: Yeah.
- 13:03Beep-beep.
- 13:04Someone's outside in the driveway.
- 13:06Dani: This was such a crazy entrance for Angelo for the whole season.
- 13:09Kara: I know.
- 13:10Dani: I- what kind of car was it?
- 13:12Like, a Porsche?
- 13:13It… Gorgeous car.
- 13:14He pulls up in, like, a vintage-
- 13:16Kara: Vintage convertible.
- 13:18Dani: Shiny convertible.
- 13:19Kara: It might be a Porsche.
- 13:20I think you're right.
- 13:21He pulls up to the driveway in a new whip he shows off to the whole family.
- 13:25Dani: Yeah.
- 13:26Everyone comes down.
- 13:27He's like, "Oh, look in the trunk of the car." He makes John do
- 13:31it, which is, like, kind of mean.
- 13:33Kara: He's trying to be like, "I- Look at me, I'm on your
- 13:36level now." It's so strange.
- 13:38Dani: It's very weird.
- 13:39Kara: Yeah, I don't get it.
- 13:40Dani: It's very weird, and he's, like, obviously rubbing it in,
- 13:43because the Kennishes got no money.
- 13:44Kara: One dollar.
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:45It's… Okay, you all lost here.
- 13:48Like, I… You all are experiencing the same thing.
- 13:51Why is this, why is this the case?
- 13:53It made, it made me kind of hate him more.
- 13:55Dani: So he gets presents for every single person in the family.
- 13:59Kara: Yes.
- 13:59He gets-
- 14:00Dani: He gets, he gets Adrianna a watch.
- 14:02Kara: I assume, like, a Rolex watch.
- 14:04Dani: It's like a, yeah, it's like a, whatever.
- 14:07It's an unbranded box, but it's a nice watch.
- 14:09Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 14:10Dani: He gets… What, what does he get Regina?
- 14:12Does he get Regina?
- 14:13Kara: He doesn't get Regina anything here.
- 14:14Dani: Oh.
- 14:15I guess 'cause in theory… No, we find out later what he's-
- 14:18Kara: Yeah.
- 14:18Dani: Getting Regina.
- 14:19Kara: We'll get to that.
- 14:20But then he gets Kathryn a cappuccino maker.
- 14:22Dani: Cappuccino maker.
- 14:23Kara: Jonathan.
- 14:24John?
- 14:24Jonathan.
- 14:25Dani: John.
- 14:26Jonathan Kennish gets what I thought at first glance was a rock tumbler.
- 14:30It is actually a very nice telescope, which, like, why?
- 14:34Kara: Yeah.
- 14:35They never say he liked astronomy.
- 14:36Dani: Why would John care about that?
- 14:38But okay.
- 14:38Kara: Yeah.
- 14:39I guess he likes the stars or something, but I didn't understand what it was,
- 14:43so I wrote he got a fancy doodad.
- 14:45Dani: Yeah.
- 14:45Right.
- 14:46Kara: Toby gets-
- 14:46Dani: I really thought he was gonna tumble rocks.
- 14:48Kara: I thought it was, like, a carburetor or something.
- 14:50It was so confusing.
- 14:51Dani: What is a carburetor?
- 14:53Kara: Like, a car part.
- 14:54Dani: Okay.
- 14:55Honestly, makes more sense than a rock tumbler.
- 14:57Kara: Yeah.
- 14:58Dani: So I'm with you there.
- 14:59Kara: Toby gets three hours of studio time to record music with
- 15:03the producer of The Flaming Lips.
- 15:05Dani: Not to be like, "What does Toby have to do with any of this?"
- 15:08but why would Toby get a gift?
- 15:10Kara: I think he's just trying to get on everyone's good side.
- 15:12Dani: Yeah.
- 15:12Kara: And be like, "Wow, you rock," and-
- 15:14Dani: But I'm like, damn.
- 15:15Kara: Yeah.
- 15:15Dani: Even Bay says later, like, "Can you believe I get
- 15:18traumatized and you get a present?"
- 15:20Kara: And she's right.
- 15:20Dani: Yeah.
- 15:21Kara: But Bay gets a gift.
- 15:22She gets a letter from Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera, and she holds-
- 15:27Dani: Framed.
- 15:27Kara: She's hugging it the whole episode.
- 15:29Dani: Like a real one.
- 15:30Unpopular opinion, those, I wouldn't want that.
- 15:34That feels insane to keep in your private home.
- 15:37Which she even said, like, "These, they don't even sell these anymore.
- 15:40Like, they're all in museums." I'm like, yeah, probably for a reason.
- 15:43Kara: Right.
- 15:44Like, it should be for the public to see.
- 15:46Dani: But then I kinda disagree about that too, actually.
- 15:48Kara: Rich people love to hoard art, though.
- 15:50Dani: Yeah.
- 15:51Kara: Not saying it's a good thing, but.
- 15:52Dani: No, I more mean, like, do we think that Frida Kahlo wanted her letters
- 15:56on public view for people to see?
- 15:58Kara: That's a great question, and the answer is probably no.
- 16:01Dani: Yeah.
- 16:01Kara: I would- they don't even say what the letter entailed.
- 16:03Dani: No.
- 16:04But I think about that a lot.
- 16:05Kara: I'd like to think it was just something like, "Honey, can you
- 16:08pick up some potatoes for dinner?"
- 16:10Dani: Yeah.
- 16:10Kara: But it's probably not.
- 16:11Dani: Even that, though, I hope I'm never a prominent enough person
- 16:15that people are trying to display my communications in museums after I'm dead.
- 16:20Kara: Especially with someone you had a very tumultuous relationship with.
- 16:24Dani: Yeah.
- 16:25That shit's private.
- 16:26Kara: Yeah.
- 16:27I know Frida Kahlo was, like, very anti-capitalist, so she would
- 16:30hate pretty much everything that's been, that's been done to her.
- 16:32Dani: Yeah.
- 16:33Kara: To her image, I mean.
- 16:34Dani: Yeah, and especially would probably hate Angelo purchasing one of her letters.
- 16:39I don't know.
- 16:40Kara: Yeah.
- 16:40Dani: I don't know.
- 16:41Felt weird about it, but Bay's really happy about it, so yay for Bay.
- 16:44Kara: Yeah.
- 16:46And then Bay goes, "Oh, what'd you get for Daphne?" And then he's like, "Oh."
- 16:50Dani: This was mean.
- 16:50I know he immediately fixed it, but-
- 16:52Kara: That was so mean.
- 16:52She already has abandonment issues.
- 16:54Why would you do that?
- 16:55Dani: Has so much going on for him to be like, "Oh, I didn't
- 16:58get you anything. I'm so sorry."
- 17:00Kara: And he's like, "Wait a second. There is one thing. Follow me." And
- 17:04they go to, I guess, the street.
- 17:06Dani: A different part of the Kennish property.
- 17:08I don't know.
- 17:09Kara: And there's a food truck there.
- 17:11Dani: Was it… Where do you think he got that giant bow?
- 17:14Kara: It's funny, I didn't even notice the bow.
- 17:15Dani: The bow is on it the whole time.
- 17:17The bow doesn't come off later when they're using it.
- 17:20Kara: Wow, okay.
- 17:21Dani: It's like a comically large bow from a car commercial.
- 17:24I guess the dealership.
- 17:26I don't know.
- 17:26Where the fuck do you buy a food truck to begin with?
- 17:29Kara: You're asking the wrong person.
- 17:30Dani: Yeah.
- 17:30Kara: That's how I feel about when people have those giant scissors for openings.
- 17:33Dani: Yes.
- 17:34Kara: Where do you get those?
- 17:34Dani: Where do you get that?
- 17:36Or, like, how a giant check is, like, it costs $200 to make the giant check.
- 17:40Kara: It does?
- 17:40Dani: Yeah.
- 17:41So it's like if you see them presenting a giant check for, like,
- 17:44a lot of money, they took $200 out of that budget to make the check big.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:49Kara: The more you know.
- 17:50Dani: Yeah.
- 17:50Kara: We don't know where giant things come from.
- 17:52Dani: The food truck stuff was very 2013.
- 17:55Kara: It is.
- 17:56And he's like-
- 17:57Dani: 'Cause they're, they are overjoyed.
- 17:59Like, I think in 2026, someone gives you a food truck, you're like, "What
- 18:03a burden I've just been saddled with."
- 18:05Kara: And that's what they should've said in this episode too.
- 18:07Dani: Yeah.
- 18:08To be fair, yes.
- 18:09But they're all like, "This is iconic. This is amazing." And you gotta remember,
- 18:152013, the amount of festivals I went to where the whole point was just, like,
- 18:20a bunch of food trucks pulled up, and there'd be thousands of people there,
- 18:23and then we'd all sit around and eat food standing up in, like, a parking lot.
- 18:28Kara: Yeah.
- 18:29Like, you're trying to eat, like, a really messy plate of food.
- 18:31Maybe you don't have a fork.
- 18:33Dani: Yes.
- 18:33Kara: Like, one napkin.
- 18:34Dani: Yes.
- 18:34Fusion.
- 18:35Kara: You're at Smorgasburg.
- 18:37Dani: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:38Kara: You waited a half-hour for this food that is just only kind of good.
- 18:42Dani: Yeah.
- 18:42Kara: No, it's, like, such a visceral feeling to me.
- 18:45Dani: In LA, there was a really big scene of, there still is, but I just
- 18:49would never pay money to go now, the summer movie series, where, like, the
- 18:53big pull for the movies is they'd be like, "And we have these 10 different
- 18:56food trucks coming, so you can get food, and then you can bring it to your
- 18:59blanket and sit and eat your food."
- 19:02And it was, like, so, like, game-changing back in 2013 that that was a thing.
- 19:07I don't know what we were doing before that.
- 19:08Kara: I wonder what the trend was, 'cause you have to get, like, a health department
- 19:12license to operate a food truck, so I wonder if the health department licenses
- 19:16for mobile units started around that time, and then that's why they kinda blew up.
- 19:21Dani: Yeah, I have no idea.
- 19:22I feel like probably it was, like, Instagram.
- 19:24Kara: It must've been something like that.
- 19:25Dani: Yeah.
- 19:25Kara: And also Instagram, for sure.
- 19:27The parents, specifically John and Regina, seem quite apprehensive
- 19:31about the food truck, rightfully so.
- 19:33Dani: Yes.
- 19:34And also just in general, Regina and John share a look because they're
- 19:38both pissed for different reasons, I think, about the Angelo gift situation.
- 19:42Kara: Yeah.
- 19:43But Angelo's like, "Trust me, it's a great idea." Okay.
- 19:47Dani: Trust me, who just met this girl, like, six months ago, it's a great idea.
- 19:53Kara: You need a business license, and a health department permit,
- 19:55and a food handler permit, but trust me, it's so easy.
- 19:59Dani: It's so easy.
- 19:59Kara: She can just sell food without a permit.
- 20:02He doesn't actually say that, but I think that's what she does.
- 20:05Dani: We don't really hear about the permit of it at all, I don't think.
- 20:08Kara: Ever.
- 20:09Dani: Yeah.
- 20:09Kara: It's confusing.
- 20:11Kathryn's supportive about the truck, though.
- 20:13I think 'cause Daphne seems happy-ish.
- 20:15She's, like, happy and nervous.
- 20:17Dani: Yeah.
- 20:18Kathryn's-
- 20:19Kara: Kathryn's Kathryn.
- 20:20Dani: Kathryn's Kathryn.
- 20:21Kara: Now we're in Bay's room with Daphne, and Daphne asks
- 20:26Bay, "So I'm-" This is crazy.
- 20:28Yeah, go on.
- 20:29Dani: I have a complaint, which is we don't see a lick of sign
- 20:32language that entire opening scene.
- 20:34Kara: Nobody signing.
- 20:35Dani: Nobody signing anything.
- 20:36Kara: Daphne may have not even known that food truck was for
- 20:39her if someone hadn't told her.
- 20:40Dani: The whole family's there.
- 20:41No one signing?
- 20:43Kara: You're right.
- 20:43Dani: I know Regina can't.
- 20:44I was just, like, waiting.
- 20:46I was so excited to get back to it, and then I was like,
- 20:48damn, we're really just… Okay.
- 20:50Kara: Maybe 'cause Angelo's there, and he for sure doesn't sign.
- 20:53Dani: Well, maybe he should spend some of his harder, hard-won
- 20:57funds and take some classes.
- 20:59Kara: Literally.
- 21:00Dani: It's time, buddy.
- 21:01Kara: That's a much better gift than a food truck.
- 21:03Dani: Yes.
- 21:04Oh my God.
- 21:04He could've been like, "Here's my in-house sign language teacher-"
- 21:07Kara: Literally
- 21:08Dani: "who I've just hired to teach me."
- 21:10Kara: That'd be amazing.
- 21:11Dani: Whatever.
- 21:12Yeah.
- 21:13I think it's also 'cause he feels bad 'cause he punched out her boss/boyfriend,
- 21:18and then she quit that job.
- 21:19You know?
- 21:20Kara: But didn't she quit the- Like, she quit first.
- 21:21Dani: Yeah, but Angelo doesn't know that.
- 21:23He knows that he showed up to Daphne's place of work, punched out her boss.
- 21:26She no longer has that job.
- 21:27Kara: Yeah.
- 21:27One of the claims he has is like, well, you can be fully independent, and you
- 21:31won't have to worry about no boss, no-
- 21:33Dani: Yeah.
- 21:33Kara: Yeah.
- 21:33You don't have to worry about anyone firing or hiring you.
- 21:36You can be your own chef and your own person.
- 21:39And this I think is exciting and also she's a little trepidatious about it.
- 21:44Dani: Yeah.
- 21:45Kara: We're in Bay's room now.
- 21:46Now we're finally doing some simcomming.
- 21:48The simcom alert, I guess.
- 21:50Daphne is like, "Wow, Angelo with all the gifts. Is he like richer than John
- 21:55and Kathryn now?" My answer is no.
- 21:57Dani: I just feel like we don't know.
- 21:59Kara: Baseball players-
- 22:00Dani: 'Cause Bay thinks yes, right?
- 22:03Kara: But Bay doesn't really answer.
- 22:04She just says, "Let me teach you about the concept of relative deprivation." Like
- 22:08rich people- rich people love to compare what they have to other rich people.
- 22:13Dani: And then claim poverty.
- 22:14Kara: Yeah.
- 22:14And then claim poverty.
- 22:15Dani: But-
- 22:16Kara: She doesn't really answer the question.
- 22:18Dani: Yeah, but the way she says it makes it sound like, like 'cause Daphne
- 22:22says, "Are they on the same level?" And Bay says, "No," in a way where to
- 22:27me it seemed like she's interpreting Angelo as much richer than her parents.
- 22:31But I would agree with you that I don't think that that's true.
- 22:33Kara: No.
- 22:34First of all, he made millions as a baseball player.
- 22:36He has five businesses, and I'm sure he invested plenty of money.
- 22:40Dani: And also they live in that gigantic fucking house.
- 22:42Kara: And Angelo's spending, spending.
- 22:44Dani: Yeah.
- 22:45Kara: That 5 million is no more now.
- 22:47Dani: Also, think of the legal fees, the taxes.
- 22:50Kara: Do you pay taxes on-
- 22:51Dani: Yeah
- 22:52Kara: -something like that?
- 22:52Dani: Yeah.
- 22:52Kara: You get, yeah, you have to pay tax on that.
- 22:54Dani: I am actually, I was quite stressed for Angelo this whole episode, 'cause
- 22:57John is being snarky by being like he's gonna spend it all immediately.
- 23:01But I'm like, no, he really is gonna spend it all immediately.
- 23:04Kara: No.
- 23:04Later when he talks about-
- 23:05Dani: Especially later on.
- 23:06Kara: When he talks about building that house, I'm like, that alone is, okay.
- 23:09Dani: Yeah.
- 23:10Kara: That's a lot.
- 23:11But also in the same room, Daphne and Bay are also saying like, "Do
- 23:16you think Regina's ever gonna accept the money from Angelo?" And Daphne's
- 23:20like, "No, she'll never do it.
- 23:21She doesn't wanna be some kept woman."
- 23:23Dani: She would sooner cut off her hand than be a kept woman.
- 23:26Kara: I missed that line.
- 23:27Interesting.
- 23:27Okay.
- 23:28Dani: I was like, okay.
- 23:29Well, she's not using it right now anyway, so.
- 23:30Kara: She's literally not using it.
- 23:31Might as well.
- 23:32We're back in the Kennish kitchen, and John is like, "So the food truck,
- 23:36that's gotta go, right? That's crazy."
- 23:39Dani: Yeah.
- 23:39Kara: It's just him and, Kathryn in the kitchen, and Kathryn's like,
- 23:42"I'm just trying to be supportive. Also, you have a Porsche." Like.
- 23:46Dani: Yeah, John, John's like, "Can you believe how he's spending that money?"
- 23:49And she goes, "You want me to go put your golf clubs in your Porsche?" And
- 23:52he says, "Hey, I earned that money."
- 23:55Kara: Okay.
- 23:55Dani: Stupid.
- 23:56They're being dumb.
- 23:57Kara: Yeah.
- 23:58And as they're arguing, Bay and Toby are hearing this, and
- 24:01then they walk to go to school.
- 24:03It's still the morning.
- 24:04I forgot it's, like, the crack of dawn.
- 24:06Dani: Yeah.
- 24:07I was tired just watching.
- 24:08Kara: I know.
- 24:09But now they're going to school.
- 24:10Dani: This show is like Gilmore Girls.
- 24:12Have you ever seen people complain about that?
- 24:15Kara: They have the longest day in the world.
- 24:16Dani: Yeah, try to figure out how they have so much time before Rory has to
- 24:19leave to go an hour to her private school.
- 24:22Kara: That's right.
- 24:23Dani: But then they're both the type of people that would not be morning people.
- 24:26Kara: No, they would sleep in.
- 24:27Dani: So it's like, what fucking time is it?
- 24:29Kara: No, you're right.
- 24:29You're right.
- 24:30I was gonna say maybe they have so much energy from all the food
- 24:33they eat, but that food is not-
- 24:34Dani: All the sugar?
- 24:36It's all the coffee.
- 24:37Kara: That's true.
- 24:38It's the coffee from Luke's.
- 24:39Dani: They're just never sleeping.
- 24:41Maybe- Maybe they're both like that because they're both in the midst of
- 24:44psychotic breaks 'cause they never sleep.
- 24:46Kara: That could be.
- 24:47Now we're at Carlton.
- 24:48Daphne and Emmett are chatting outside, and she's telling Emmett about the gifts
- 24:52that they just received from Angelo.
- 24:54And Emmett is like, "Oh, I just heard about the letter. And I know about this
- 24:58because Bay and I have been texting since I retrieved her from the Mexico border."
- 25:03Dani: Yeah.
- 25:04Kara: "We haven't been hanging out a lot, though. She's been
- 25:06studying a lot," she says.
- 25:07And-
- 25:07Dani: Yeah, he said, "She keeps blowing me off to study." And Daphne's
- 25:10like, "No, she's really studying."
- 25:11Kara: "She's really studying, I promise."
- 25:12Dani: Yeah.
- 25:13Kara: Yeah, she, I guess, had an epiphany about doing street
- 25:17art, and now she's studying.
- 25:18I don't-
- 25:19Dani: I don't-
- 25:19Kara: They don't really explain.
- 25:20Like, she doesn't say, like, "I wanna get into a good school," or-
- 25:24Dani: She says to her parents, "I don't wanna be in the bottom 10."
- 25:27Like, she's like, "I'm not gonna be top of my class, but I don't
- 25:30wanna be in the bottom 10."
- 25:31Kara: Great goal.
- 25:32Dani: I guess great goal.
- 25:34I wonder if she's like, "Whoa, I don't actually wanna be like Zarra."
- 25:38Kara: That could be.
- 25:39Dani: But the thing is, Bay, you go to a rich private school.
- 25:42You were never gonna be like Zarra.
- 25:43Kara: No.
- 25:44Dani: You could, no matter what you do-
- 25:45Kara: Well, she's not gonna be there a-
- 25:47Dani: Yeah.
- 25:47Kara: Much longer.
- 25:48Dani: They were like, "We're getting tired of paying for two sets, so let's combine."
- 25:53Kara: While the two of them are talking, a poor little hearing guy approaches.
- 25:58And he tries to sign, w- not really tries to sign.
- 26:02But he's like, "Sign up for classes in the office? Office where?"
- 26:05Dani: Office where?
- 26:06It's like he had a vague understanding of the syntax and, like, grammar
- 26:10structure of sign language but doesn't actually know any sign language.
- 26:15And so he was like, "Oh, I'll just speak."
- 26:17Kara: Yes, and he speaks-
- 26:18Dani: Like, wrong.
- 26:18Kara: He speaks to Emmett.
- 26:20He faces Emmett.
- 26:21Dani: Yeah.
- 26:21Kara: And then Emmett is lip-reading, and he's like, "Okay, sure,"
- 26:24but he's not really helping.
- 26:25Dani: Emmett's mean.
- 26:26Kara: He's being mean as… It's kind of funny, but he's like "Just go
- 26:29down to the left, to the right, and then that's how you'll get there."
- 26:32Dani: And then he finger-spells-
- 26:33Kara: He finger-spells something
- 26:34. Dani: Did you catch that?
- 26:35Kara: No, it was too fast for me.
- 26:36Dani: It was so fast.
- 26:37But yeah, he finger-spells, like, an irrelevant thing-
- 26:40Kara: Yeah.
- 26:40Dani: To be like, "Fuck you."
- 26:41Kara: Yeah, and the guy's like, "Aw." And then Daphne's like- I'll help you.
- 26:45I'll guide you.
- 26:45And then he goes, "Oh, great, you talk. Are you in the pilot program, too?"
- 26:49Dani: Yeah.
- 26:50Kara: And then Daphne goes, "No, I'm deaf. I'm just also oral."
- 26:52Dani: New twist just dropped.
- 26:54Kara: Pilot program.
- 26:55Dani: Pilot program.
- 26:56Kara: We'll see.
- 26:57And then she guides him, and as she guides him away, Emmett signs,
- 27:00"Lost little hearing puppy."
- 27:02Dani: That's Daphne's favorite type of boy.
- 27:04Kara: That is true, and that's also what I see every time I go to
- 27:08a deaf event and, like, a hearing person comes in to tag along.
- 27:11Like, I'm glad they're there and they're making the effort,
- 27:14but sometimes they are like, oh.
- 27:16Dani: It's, it's okay.
- 27:17Everyone's very friendly.
- 27:19Kara: Yes.
- 27:19You should go to deaf events, please.
- 27:20Dani: You should go.
- 27:21It's worth the humiliation of being like that for a minute.
- 27:24Kara: It is.
- 27:25It is.
- 27:25Now we're going off to the other school.
- 27:28Bay and Toby are driving to Buckner, and Bay says that thing of, "Where's my
- 27:32thank you for being switched at birth?"
- 27:34Dani: Yeah.
- 27:34Kara: "Now you have studio time with the Flaming Lips
- 27:37producer, and I'm traumatized. Congrats." They go park the car.
- 27:40Remember, her car is still decked out with that artwork.
- 27:44Dani: The sea creatures.
- 27:45Kara: Yeah, that's Zarra's artwork.
- 27:46Dani: Yeah.
- 27:47Kara: I would just paint over that at that point.
- 27:49Dani: I know.
- 27:49It's been six weeks.
- 27:51Kara: That's true.
- 27:52But the security guard comes up and is like, "Hey, you gotta move that
- 27:55car. It doesn't fit with the Buckner image. Pull over to the back." And
- 27:59Bay's pissed but she does do it.
- 28:01I would be pissed, too.
- 28:02Dani: Yeah, I mean, you pay, like, 60 grand a year to go to that school.
- 28:05I'm sure she pays for that parking spot.
- 28:07Kara: Oh, that's so true.
- 28:08Dani: Yeah.
- 28:09I'd be pissed.
- 28:09Kara: That is so annoying.
- 28:10Angelo takes Regina to a golf course lot where he wants to go build a house.
- 28:16I guess this is like a vacant lot where they're gonna build luxury housing?
- 28:19Dani: Why is there land for sale on a golf course?
- 28:23Kara: It's such a strange place.
- 28:25Dani: It's, like, in the middle of the golf course.
- 28:27Kara: Like, next to hole nine.
- 28:28It's so weird.
- 28:29Dani: Yeah, and Regina's like, "Isn't this the Kennishes' golf course?"
- 28:32And Angelo's like, "Huh, I didn't know," and then gives a little smirk.
- 28:35Like, he's doing this on purpose.
- 28:37So weird.
- 28:38He's, like, trying to dom John Kennish by being like, "Look, I'm
- 28:41gonna build a house on your golf course," with… It- it's for sure
- 28:45gonna cost more than the money he won.
- 28:47Kara: Yeah, he said, "We're gonna build a beautiful luxury house,
- 28:50and we can have a pool and a tennis court," and later he says he wants
- 28:54a music room with soundproof walls.
- 28:57Surely, I've never built a house before, but I feel like all
- 29:01of that is over five million.
- 29:02Dani: Also, just the property taxes on a place like that, because-
- 29:05Kara: On a golf course?
- 29:06Yeah.
- 29:07Dani: Yes, Angelo, you have five million dollars, but you, that's it.
- 29:10There's no more coming in.
- 29:12Kara: No.
- 29:12Dani: It's not like you just got a job where you're getting paid
- 29:15five million dollars a year.
- 29:16Kara: No one is working.
- 29:17Dani: Yeah.
- 29:18If anything, put that, put that money away.
- 29:21Kara: Invest it.
- 29:22Dani: Put, yeah, put it away, and then keep it for when you really need it.
- 29:26Kara: He stresses me out.
- 29:27Dani: Sure, buy yourself the little car, but then nothing else.
- 29:29Kara: Perhaps nothing else.
- 29:30Dani: Perhaps nothing.
- 29:31Kara: Sign language classes and the car.
- 29:32Dani: Yeah, and the food truck, I guess, 'cause that was non-negotiable apparently.
- 29:36Kara: I guess.
- 29:37We're back at Carlton, and Daphne brings the lost little puppy boy to the office.
- 29:42His name is Teo, which I thought was Ted, 'cause I misread the captions.
- 29:46But then I looked it up again.
- 29:48And Melody sees her in the process, and goes like, "Hi, honey.
- 29:52Since you quit your kitchen job, you need to be doing something else.
- 29:55You can't just have a free period.
- 29:57So in the meantime, I signed you up for my Deaf Studies seminar."
- 30:01And Daphne's like, "Thanks."
- 30:03Dani: She really doesn't wanna do it.
- 30:05Kara: It sounds like a good class.
- 30:07Dani: Melody's like her mom.
- 30:08Kara: That's fair.
- 30:09Dani: Like, you don't wanna take your mom's class about, like, Deaf heroes.
- 30:14Like Deaf pride, yeah.
- 30:15Kara: She's like, "I've already heard enough from you about that."
- 30:17Dani: Honestly, Daphne needs it, though, but…
- 30:19Kara: She's gonna need that later.
- 30:20Dani: Yeah.
- 30:21Kara: Yeah, she truly has no sense of Deaf pride.
- 30:23Dani: Yeah.
- 30:24So yeah, it's established she can't find a new job to fill that time.
- 30:29Kara: Yes, I guess not.
- 30:30Dani: And that sucks for her, so.
- 30:32Kara: That does.
- 30:33She's just not having a fun day.
- 30:35Bay, after moving her car, goes in the hallway.
- 30:38She's walking through Buckner, and she gets called into the principal's office.
- 30:42She's like, "Shit, don't know what that's about." She meets with the
- 30:45principal and Monsieur Feldman.
- 30:47They're a French teacher, and they're like, "You are here because you got 94 on
- 30:52your French exam, but the girl in front of you got 97, and we think you cheated."
- 30:58And Bay's like, "So I didn't. I truly have been studying my ass off, and I also
- 31:02have a biological father who's fluent in French." And they said, "Okay, great.
- 31:07Well, now you need to testify in front of the Ca- the Buckner Honor Board."
- 31:11Dani: But that's insane.
- 31:12Over one test is crazy.
- 31:14Kara: I agree.
- 31:15She says later on she could be suspended or expelled.
- 31:19Dani: Can you imagine paying 60 grand for a private school, and then they
- 31:22expel your kid for improving on a test?
- 31:24Kara: For studying?
- 31:24Yeah.
- 31:25Dani: Yeah.
- 31:25She is so pissed, and is not holding back.
- 31:28The whole episode, she's like, "What the fuck?" Like, what do you mean?
- 31:32Kara: Yeah.
- 31:32Dani: I would … I understand completely why she wants to leave
- 31:35Buckner by the end of the episode.
- 31:36Kara: No, I get it.
- 31:37I'd be furious.
- 31:38Dani: Like, she's wanted to leave pretty much the whole time.
- 31:40But I don't know if her choice makes the most sense to me.
- 31:45Kara: No.
- 31:46I think they're gonna discuss this in the next episode, but-
- 31:49Dani: Yeah.
- 31:49Kara: We'll get to it.
- 31:51Dani: Ugh, can't wait.
- 31:52Kara: John and Kathryn got invited to play golf with some friends.
- 31:54Dani: Yeah, this is so random.
- 31:56You know, the actors, the actors playing these people are,
- 31:59they also play Lucas Grabeel's parents in High School Musical 2.
- 32:03Kara: You're right.
- 32:04Dani: Yeah.
- 32:04And they're on the golf course then.
- 32:06Kara: I knew the mom looked familiar.
- 32:07Dani: Yeah.
- 32:08Kara: That's awesome.
- 32:09They love golf in every lifetime.
- 32:11Dani: Yeah, so, so they are, like, I honestly wasn't really paying attention
- 32:15to this, 'cause I knew it was just a plot device to get Kathryn and John
- 32:18into, like, the political situation.
- 32:20Kara: Yeah.
- 32:21Dani: They're, like, involved politically somehow.
- 32:24They're politicians, or they're fundraisers or something.
- 32:27They're on the party board.
- 32:29Kara: I'm not entirely sure what they do, but they're, like, this-
- 32:32Dani: Some guy died.
- 32:33Kara: The state senator passed away, and they said something
- 32:35about chronic depression.
- 32:37Did he kill himself?
- 32:38Dani: I was confused about that.
- 32:40So anyway, he's kind of irrelevant now.
- 32:42So they're like, "We're trying to find someone new," and they're
- 32:45kinda buttering Kathryn up the whole time on the golf course.
- 32:48Kara: Yeah, they're like, "You're amazing. You wrote this book. You're so cool."
- 32:51Dani: And then they're like, "We really want your random friend, who was also
- 32:55a baseball player back in the day-
- 32:57Kara: Yes.
- 32:58Dani: To run.
- 32:58Can you, like, approach him for us?"
- 33:00Kara: Yeah.
- 33:00Dani: Which is just not how those things work, I don't think.
- 33:03But whatever.
- 33:04Kara: Could not tell you.
- 33:05And then later, John is like, "That guy's dumb as a box of rocks."
- 33:08Dani: Yeah.
- 33:08Kara: Like, "I may ask him to run, but I'm not gonna vote for him."
- 33:12And Kathryn's like, "I don't know, I think I'd be kinda good at it."
- 33:15Dani: She was like, "I thought they were gonna ask me." And then John kinda
- 33:19makes her feel silly for thinking that.
- 33:21Kara: I know.
- 33:22Dani: Like, he's really dismissive when she's like, "What if I ran?" at first.
- 33:25And then he gets on board.
- 33:26Kara: Yeah.
- 33:26Later, he's like, "Okay."
- 33:27Dani: He gets on board later.
- 33:29And he's supportive.
- 33:31I'm wrapping this up 'cause I don't really care about this-
- 33:33Kara: Yeah, let's wrap it up.
- 33:34Dani: He's supportive at fir- or he's supportive eventually.
- 33:37Much like everything with John Kennish, he, like, first has to react with, like,
- 33:41a little bit of old-school Republican man.
- 33:44Kara: Yes.
- 33:44Dani: And be like, "What? No." And then he got over it and
- 33:48accepted that he would have to be continuing to make his own dinner.
- 33:51Kara: Yeah.
- 33:51So Kathryn then calls the friend and is like, "I think I
- 33:54should run for state senate."
- 33:56Dani: And then the friend is like, "Actually, we think John should run." And-
- 34:00Kara: I kind of think they're right.
- 34:00I think that'd be a bit more realistic, yeah.
- 34:03Dani: Yeah.
- 34:03Kathryn's so great, but I- her being like, "I'm kind of a brand."
- 34:07Well, your husband-
- 34:08Kara: John is the brand.
- 34:09Dani: Yeah.
- 34:09Your husband was, like, is, like, actually a celebrity.
- 34:12Kara: But she gets on board.
- 34:13She makes a little poster, like, John Kennish for state senate.
- 34:16Dani: I think that she would- I don't remember if she ends up being his campaign
- 34:19manager officially, but I feel like she would be so good at all of that.
- 34:22Kara: You're so right.
- 34:23That would be her new thing.
- 34:24Dani: And then she's like, "And then we can be like Bill and Hillary."
- 34:27Kara: Oof.
- 34:27Dani: She's like, "I'll do it next." Oof.
- 34:29Kara: Yeah.
- 34:29Dani: Tough.
- 34:30Kara: But John first is like, "I'm good.
- 34:32I don't wanna do all that." And she was like, "I think this
- 34:34would be a good path for you.
- 34:35You'd feel more fulfilled.
- 34:37You can do all the things that you complain aren't being done."
- 34:40Dani: So true.
- 34:41I think it would be the perfect role for him.
- 34:43Kara: I think it'd be more fun for the show if Kathryn ran, but I understand
- 34:48that John running is more realistic.
- 34:50And that's the end of that plot really.
- 34:51Yeah.
- 34:51John's gonna probably run for state senate.
- 34:54Okay.
- 34:55And now where are we?
- 34:57Dani: In my notes I put, "local government thing, I guess. IDK."
- 35:01That's all I had to say about that.
- 35:02Daphne's outside with Travis.
- 35:05Kara: They're doing work together.
- 35:06Dani: They're doing work together, except they're not, because Travis
- 35:08is trying to talk to Daphne about his birthday that's coming up, and Daphne
- 35:12is looking on Chef Jeff's website.
- 35:16Kara: It's the Maize website.
- 35:17Dani: The Maize website, like, staring at his card and what
- 35:20tonight's dinner menu is longingly.
- 35:22And then Travis kinda tries to, like, look at it.
- 35:24Daphne's like, "Whoa, whoa.
- 35:26Back off." And then continues to ignore him as he's like, "So you're making
- 35:30me a birthday cake, right?" This was such a tough scene because Travis
- 35:35is so sweet to me, the viewer, but if I was Daphne, I would be annoyed.
- 35:38Kara: I'd be annoyed.
- 35:39Dani: 'Cause he's so needy.
- 35:41But he's so needy 'cause he doesn't have anyone else, and he needs someone.
- 35:44Kara: He goes, "Can you make me a birthday cake? Last year when I turned
- 35:4717, my parents forgot about me, and they went out to dinner without me."
- 35:51Dani: It was so heartbreaking.
- 35:52But then he's like, "The more chocolate, the better, please."
- 35:55And it's like if I'm Daphne, and I have an eating disorder and I'm,
- 35:59like, exercising to have control in my life, and I'm heartbroken, and I'm
- 36:05unemployed, and then this man is like, "Can you make me a birthday cake?"
- 36:09Kara: Ah!
- 36:09Dani: Ah!
- 36:10But poor Travis also.
- 36:12Kara: I liked, I liked in the beginning of that scene, he's also in
- 36:14the Deaf Studies class with Melody.
- 36:16And he goes, "Have you heard of Dummy Hoy?"
- 36:18Dani: Yeah.
- 36:18Kara: Who was, like, the first deaf baseball player.
- 36:20And Ryan Lane himself was in the Dummy Hoy documentary.
- 36:25Dani: Oh, very cool.
- 36:25Kara: So I thought that was a fun thing.
- 36:27Dani: Before or after this?
- 36:29Kara: Before, in 2008.
- 36:30Dani: Hell yeah.
- 36:31Kara: Mm-hmm.
- 36:32Oh, and then also Daphne refuses potato chips, and he goes,
- 36:35"You're not bulimic, right?"
- 36:36Dani: Yeah.
- 36:36He goes, "You're not making yourself throw up, are you?"
- 36:39Kara: While he's, like, trauma dumping on her-
- 36:42Dani: Yeah.
- 36:42Kara: She is texting Chef Jeff, "Could you give me a work recommendation?"
- 36:47Dani: Yeah.
- 36:47Kara: And this, after all the green bubbles, is when he finally
- 36:50texts back, "Let's meet after lockup." And she sprints off.
- 36:54Dani: Yeah.
- 36:54Sad.
- 36:55Kara: Yeah.
- 36:56Dani: I can't believe we had to deal with him in this episode.
- 36:58I, I really thought we were done.
- 37:00Kara: I know.
- 37:01Toby.
- 37:02Dani: Why did he do this?
- 37:04Kara: They just need any excuse for him to hear about this.
- 37:07But he goes to Angelo's apartment.
- 37:09Dani: Yeah.
- 37:10Kara: To say thank you again for the studio time.
- 37:13And when he arrives, I guess the apartment door is wide open.
- 37:17Dani: So he just walks right in.
- 37:18Kara: And he hears an argument between Angelo and this woman, who I think
- 37:23later we find out her name is Lana.
- 37:25Dani: Okay.
- 37:26Pretty name.
- 37:27Kara: Yeah.
- 37:27And what was the- what was the premise of the argument?
- 37:30It was just kind of like, "I'm pregnant, and I-"
- 37:33Dani: I think it was him being like, "I want you to take a paternity test,"
- 37:36and her being like, "I'm literally only back here because I, I, like, I was
- 37:39gonna not tell you, but then I read all that shit you said in court about
- 37:43being sad about missing out on raising your daughters, and I wanted to give
- 37:46you a chance to raise another one."
- 37:48Kara: Oh, and then he's like, "No."
- 37:49Dani: Yeah.
- 37:50And then Toby's like, "Hey. I can come back later. It's fine."
- 37:53Kara: And then Angelo is like, Angelo's like, "No. Sit down."
- 37:56Dani: He's like, "Sit down.
- 37:57I'm gonna trauma dump on you-
- 37:59Kara: A 17-year-old.
- 38:00Dani: About how I had a one-night stand and everything's fucked up now."
- 38:04Kara: Poor Toby is like, "Oh, it's truly not my business.
- 38:07I truly don't know what I would even do." And Angelo's like, "Can you believe
- 38:11it?" And he's like, "No, 'cause I'm 17."
- 38:13Dani: Yeah.
- 38:14He's like, "I've literally never been anywhere close to a situation like
- 38:17this. So no, I can't believe it."
- 38:19Kara: I know.
- 38:20Yeah, Angelo says, so when Adrianna called the cops on him, he got on a
- 38:24plane to Italy, where he met Lana, and then they ended up by chance
- 38:30meeting at a cafe in Rome, and then they had this one-night stand.
- 38:33And then Angelo is like, "But that can't be. Like, there's no way I got her
- 38:38pregnant, so I asked for a DNA test."
- 38:40And Toby's like, "Yeah, totally. Hmm."
- 38:45Dani: To be fair, from Angelo's perspective, and he says this, and he
- 38:49shouldn't have said it, but she did show up on the day that he won $5 million.
- 38:54Kara: But how could she have known he was gonna win?
- 38:57Dani: Well, she showed up after he won.
- 38:58Kara: Oh.
- 38:59Dani: Like, she shows up to the courthouse-
- 39:01Kara: After.
- 39:01That's fair.
- 39:02Dani: After.
- 39:02Kara: That's true.
- 39:03He does say, like, "She's coming after my money."
- 39:05Dani: Yeah.
- 39:06Kara: For, I guess, parental support.
- 39:09Dani: But it's like, well, I don't know.
- 39:12If it's your kid, then yeah, she is.
- 39:13Kara: Yes.
- 39:14Dani: Then, yeah, get that parental support.
- 39:16Kara: Get it.
- 39:17Bay is back at home.
- 39:19She has told John and Kathleen already that she's been accused of cheating, and-
- 39:23Dani: They're being very supportive.
- 39:24Kara: Yeah, they're like, "We have been watching you study, so, yeah,
- 39:28you did not cheat." And Bay says, "Well, for this honor board, I have
- 39:32to present my case, and then Monsieur Feldman has to present his case.
- 39:36And then the board decides if I'm suspended or expelled or if I'm good.
- 39:41And I also asked Angelo to come, I guess, to kind of represent me and to prove
- 39:46that he's been teaching me French." And John is like, "Okay, he's not the most
- 39:51reliable, but I guess it's a good idea."
- 39:53Dani: I was so worried when she said that she'd asked that he was gonna bail on her.
- 39:57Kara: I thought so, too.
- 39:57Dani: I was really scared of that.
- 39:59Kara: Yeah.
- 39:59But Kathryn also is kind of like, "He'll win another million
- 40:03dollars. Everyone loves him."
- 40:05Dani: It's true.
- 40:06He's so handsome.
- 40:07Those students will be like, "Well, obviously you're innocent."
- 40:10Kara: Yeah, which kind of is what happens after.
- 40:13Toby is in the garage after his little chat with Angelo.
- 40:16He's sweating bullets.
- 40:18Dani: Yeah.
- 40:18Kara: And he sees Regina with boxes.
- 40:20He comes to help her.
- 40:21Dani: He tries to turn away.
- 40:23She's like, "Hello."
- 40:24Kara: "I need your help. Angelo asked me to design the house I'm building."
- 40:29The- yeah, Angelo asked me to design the house that he's building, and he
- 40:34wants a music room, and I want your help for- how to do, like, soundproof walls.
- 40:40Dani: Right.
- 40:40Kara: This is crazy.
- 40:41Dani: And Toby's like, "You're moving in with him?"
- 40:44And Regina's like, "I don't see what's stopping me." I don't know, girl.
- 40:48Maybe the context in which you exist.
- 40:51Kara: Right.
- 40:52And then Toby is-
- 40:53Dani: And everything that came before you.
- 40:54I don't know.
- 40:55Like, let's maybe look around.
- 40:56Let's take in our surroundings.
- 40:58Let's remember where we're at.
- 40:59Kara: I know.
- 41:00Toby is so stressed out.
- 41:02He's like, "Oh, you're gonna move in with him?"
- 41:03Dani: Oh, wow.
- 41:04Okay.
- 41:05Kara: Daphne goes to see Chef Jeff after the text.
- 41:08She is thrilled to see him.
- 41:10Dani: She's grinning ear to ear.
- 41:12It's so sad.
- 41:13This is so- Travis is so sad puppy, and then Daphne's, like, ugh, and kicking
- 41:19him, and then turning around and she's sad puppy to Chef Jeff, and he's kicking her.
- 41:24Kara: Yeah, and then she kicks Travis.
- 41:26Dani: It's a terrible cycle.
- 41:27Kara: Yeah.
- 41:28Dani: I know, she goes back and kicks Travis harder.
- 41:30Kara: I know.
- 41:31She's so happy to see him, and then he says, "I can't give you a work
- 41:35recommendation. I'm on probation after this whole thing. A bunch of
- 41:38chefs know what happened between us, and if they ask about you, I'm
- 41:42gonna have to tell them the truth."
- 41:44Dani: That-
- 41:45Kara: They can't just say you're-
- 41:46Dani: -made no sense.
- 41:46Kara: You're a great chef?
- 41:47Dani: Yeah.
- 41:49Oh, she had to be let go for, because she's a high school student, and it-
- 41:53Kara: She had to be let go 'cause I'm the problem.
- 41:55Like-
- 41:56Dani: Also, she resigned.
- 41:57Kara: Yes.
- 41:58Dani: So you don't even have to say, like, "Oh, she was fired for what happened."
- 42:01Like, she- you could just be like, "Yeah, her school schedule got too busy,
- 42:05but now it's better. You should hire her. Great girl." Kind of, who cares?
- 42:10Kara: Yeah.
- 42:11Dani: Not, like, we care obviously about what happened.
- 42:13Fuck him.
- 42:13But like who-
- 42:14Kara: So why does a random employee- employer need to know that?
- 42:17Dani: Yeah.
- 42:18Yeah.
- 42:18Why did… He says, "I'm gonna have to be honest."
- 42:21Kara: This isn't court.
- 42:21Dani: This is just very upsetting that she's suffering the
- 42:23consequences of his choices.
- 42:24Kara: And also, we cannot be friends.
- 42:26I mean, yes, agreed, but Daphne-
- 42:29Dani: Yeah.
- 42:29Yeah.
- 42:29And then he's like, "Also, you don't have to text me every time you put me down as
- 42:34a reference, if you are gonna put me down as a reference," which obviously she's not
- 42:38after you said, "Well, I'm gonna have to spill the tea about how we were together."
- 42:41Kara: And then Daphne goes, "Oh, okay. I'm sorry." She apologizes.
- 42:45Dani: She is sorry?
- 42:47What do you mean?
- 42:48Kara: She drives home, and Travis is there in the driveway.
- 42:51Dani: Oh my God.
- 42:52Kara: And yeah, and then she kicks him while he's down.
- 42:55Dani: Okay.
- 42:55But then the flip side of, this is so- this is actually a really
- 42:58good plot line, because I feel for everyone in this situation.
- 43:01Kara: I know.
- 43:01Me too.
- 43:02Dani: Because again, if I'm Daphne, and I've just gone through this, and
- 43:05then I show up, and a guy who I have rejected multiple times, granted she
- 43:10has then used him and flirted with him-
- 43:12Kara: Yes.
- 43:12Dani: For Chef Jeff's attention.
- 43:13But, like, Travis should be putting things together, piecing the amount of times
- 43:18that she then bailed on him as well.
- 43:20You know?
- 43:20Kara: Which is what she says, is she's saying-
- 43:22Dani: Yeah.
- 43:22She's like, "I can't. You will not take a hint," and that's
- 43:25very frustrating and true.
- 43:27Kara: Yeah.
- 43:28Dani: But it's just like, Travis needs someone.
- 43:31Kara: He does.
- 43:32Dani: I know.
- 43:33Kara: Yeah.
- 43:34I don't think-
- 43:34Dani: Daphne's so privileged compared to him.
- 43:36Kara: No one's wrong in this situation.
- 43:38Dani: No.
- 43:38Kara: They're going through it.
- 43:39Dani: And I also think for Travis, he's kind of over, like, he's not really
- 43:42trying to pursue Daphne like that anymore.
- 43:44Kara: No, I think he's like, "Please, I need a friend."
- 43:46Dani: Yeah.
- 43:47Kara: And he later is gonna say-
- 43:49Dani: Yeah…
- 43:49Kara: why he really needs one.
- 43:50Dani: Yeah.
- 43:51But she really, she's mean to him.
- 43:54Kara: It's
- 43:54Dani: the next day, and Bay is trying to hang up the Frida letter in the
- 43:58bedroom in a very weird location.
- 44:00Agree.
- 44:00Kara: It's,
- 44:00Dani: like, way too high up-
- 44:01It's too high that you can't read it.
- 44:02It's, like, way above her-
- 44:04Kara: like, Frida Kahlo quote.
- 44:06But then you cannot read it.
- 44:07It's, like, near the ceiling.
- 44:08Dani: Yeah.
- 44:08She's, like, on her tiptoes on her bed.
- 44:10Kara: Interior design's not her thing,
- 44:12Dani: I
- 44:12Kara: guess.
- 44:12No, definitely not.
- 44:13Toby walks in.
- 44:15This is also the day before honor board, and Bay's like, "Do you
- 44:19like where I'm gonna hang this picture? Isn't this so cool?"
- 44:22Dani: And Toby's like, "Your dad is a problem."
- 44:25Kara: Well, he goes, "Are you sure that's real?"
- 44:27Dani: Oh, fucked up way to start.
- 44:28Kara: Yeah.
- 44:29And Bay's like, "Yeah.
- 44:30Also, what's going on?" And Toby's like, "I think he got someone
- 44:34pregnant." And then Bay immediately turns around and goes, "Was she
- 44:37African American and gorgeous?"
- 44:39Dani: Yeah.
- 44:39Kara: And the answer is yes, she is.
- 44:40Dani: I can't believe- and then she reveals that when they brought
- 44:43that up after the events of the finale, Angelo was like, "She was
- 44:46just a People magazine reporter."
- 44:48Kara: He fully lies to her face.
- 44:49Dani: Yeah.
- 44:50But, like, do you believe that?
- 44:52Kara: I don't know.
- 44:53Dani: She's, like, nine months pregnant.
- 44:54Kara: Well, Bay was like, "I don't know, 'cause everyone was asking for
- 44:58statements after this trial. So, like, I didn't really think anything of it."
- 45:02Dani: Think that one's on her a little.
- 45:04Kara: I
- 45:04Dani: don't know.
- 45:05I would've been connecting dots.
- 45:06Kara: I'd
- 45:06Dani: be clueless as a teenager.
- 45:07I would've been connecting dots.
- 45:08Angelo's so shifty.
- 45:10Kara: That's true.
- 45:11But now it's honor board day.
- 45:13Bay is pissed now, now that she knows about Lana.
- 45:16but thank God he's there.
- 45:17I was afraid he was gonna bail.
- 45:19Dani: Me too.
- 45:19Kara: She turns to Angelo while they're waiting for the honor board to start,
- 45:23and she's like, "So where is that People magazine article that you talked about?"
- 45:27And he's like, "Oh, I'll go look for it. I don't know. I don't know
- 45:30if it ever came out." Bad lying.
- 45:32Honor board starts, and he stands up, and he speaks from the o- from the
- 45:36heart, and it seems to go pretty well.
- 45:38Dani: Yeah.
- 45:39Kara: Afterward, Bay marches out.
- 45:40She's like, "Great, that's done. I don't have to worry about that." Also, you're
- 45:44the one who's a liar and a cheater.
- 45:45Dani: Yeah.
- 45:47Kara: And then Angelo's-
- 45:48Dani: I hope Toby already cashed in his recording session.
- 45:51Kara: True.
- 45:51Angelo's like, "Don't worry. Yes, I, maybe I did get her pregnant, but
- 45:56I'm gonna give her plenty of money so she can raise the baby on her own,
- 45:59and I don't have to be involved."
- 46:01Dani: Damn, bitch, you really learned nothing.
- 46:03Kara: Yeah.
- 46:04It's like, do you get the issue?
- 46:06Dani: Yeah.
- 46:06No.
- 46:07And Bay, yeah, Bay crashes the fuck out.
- 46:10Kara: She's like, "So you're gonna walk out on another kid?"
- 46:13Dani: And he's like, "Well, yeah, so that I'm not walking out on you
- 46:15again." And she's like, "That's-"
- 46:17Kara: No.
- 46:18Dani: "It's too late," basically.
- 46:20Kara: Daphne is in her Deaf studies class now at Carlton while a classmate is
- 46:24giving a presentation about Andrew Foster.
- 46:27Dani: It's Natalie.
- 46:27Kara: Yes, that's right.
- 46:29Dani: This is our first time seeing Natalie.
- 46:31Kara: That's true.
- 46:32Dani: We're not introduced to her.
- 46:34I just remember her from later seasons.
- 46:35Kara: No, we just see her giving the presentation, but we don't
- 46:37know her name or anything.
- 46:38Dani: Yeah.
- 46:39I love her.
- 46:40Kara: Me too.
- 46:40Dani: She's one of my favorite characters.
- 46:42Kara: She's giving a presentation on Andrew Foster, who was the
- 46:45first Black Deaf person to get a bachelor's from Gallaudet, and then
- 46:48he founded the Christian Mission for the Deaf African, and he established
- 46:52a bunch of schools in Africa.
- 46:54Overall, he established 30 churches and mission schools for the deaf
- 46:58in 13 countries across Africa.
- 47:00Sure.
- 47:01I have mixed feelings about missions, but sure.
- 47:03But he brought language.
- 47:04Dani: Different time.
- 47:05Kara: But also Natalie does say, and this is true, I looked it up, was
- 47:08that the culture at the time if you had a deaf child was to lock them up.
- 47:13And then kind of throw away the key or throw it, or you just leave them for dead.
- 47:16It's really awful.
- 47:17Dani: Yeah.
- 47:18Kara: And he kind of changed attitudes there and was like, "No, they deserve
- 47:21an education." "They deserve to be treated like everyone else."
- 47:24Dani: I guess mission schools in this case are a lesser evil.
- 47:27Kara: Yes.
- 47:27That's kind of how I feel.
- 47:29But Daphne does not care.
- 47:30She's doodling the whole time.
- 47:32Dani: She's draw- drawing a big J.
- 47:34Kara: And Melody sees this.
- 47:36Dani: Melody sees.
- 47:37Kara: Yeah.
- 47:37Dani: I think Melody needs to have a little bit more compassion than she
- 47:41has in this episode overall, honestly.
- 47:42Kara: I have mixed feelings about this next scene.
- 47:44She keeps Daphne after class.
- 47:46She's like, "Travis isn't here.
- 47:48Have you guys talked?" Daphne's like, "No."
- 47:50Dani: Melody's
- 47:50Kara: like, "Was he okay when you saw him?" Daphne's like, "Yeah,
- 47:53totally fine." She's such a liar.
- 47:55Alright.
- 47:56And then Melody goes, "What are you doing in the, the notebook? Taking notes?"
- 48:01Dani: Taking notes, fully not looking.
- 48:02Kara: The giant J.
- 48:03Dani: Yeah.
- 48:04Kara: Okay.
- 48:05It's kind of hard to be in a deaf class.
- 48:07You kind of have to look up.
- 48:09Dani: Yeah.
- 48:09Kara: It's kind… Yeah.
- 48:10Yeah.
- 48:10You can't really be doodling.
- 48:11Dani: You can't really be looking elsewhere and then say, "I was listening."
- 48:15Kara: Yeah.
- 48:15Melody says, "Is, is this about Jeff? Do you realize how badly
- 48:20you screwed up?" She screwed up?
- 48:23Dani: She's pissing me off.
- 48:23Kara: Do you know how hard it is to get an opportunity like
- 48:25that and you threw it away?
- 48:27She was being groomed and abused.
- 48:29Dani: Yes, she does say, "This isn't about you dating your boss.
- 48:32I couldn't care less about that."
- 48:33Kara: It's not dating your boss.
- 48:35Dani: And it's like, I don't know, you were dating her boss, too!
- 48:36And let's not forget.
- 48:37Kara: Yeah.
- 48:38Dani: You were dating her boss, too.
- 48:39Kara: Oh my God.
- 48:41Dani: But yeah, then she's like, "This is about you being a deaf
- 48:44person who threw away an opportunity."
- 48:46Kara: Yeah, you can't afford to make bad decisions.
- 48:48Get over him.
- 48:49I do l- And Daphne does respond really well to this.
- 48:52She really likes, she does always respond really well to, like, a talking to.
- 48:57Dani: Yeah.
- 48:58Kara: And if I were that, at that age, I'd be crying.
- 49:01Dani: Yeah.
- 49:02I, I don't feel like it's fair that-
- 49:04Kara: No.
- 49:05Dani: Melody's putting all that on her.
- 49:06Kara: No.
- 49:07And then she points to the posters of, like, Helen Keller and Andrew Foster,
- 49:10and she's like, "These people kicked down doors to give us the rights we take
- 49:13for granted. Do not disrespect them."
- 49:16Dani: I just think, like, it's okay for Daphne to be a teenager.
- 49:20Kara: I think it's way-
- 49:21Dani: She doesn't have to be, like, a Deaf icon all the time.
- 49:24Kara: I think it's way too much pressure, and also she was abused.
- 49:27Dani: Literally.
- 49:28We're just-
- 49:28Kara: Does no one remember that?
- 49:29Dani: I think we just have to establish that in this world, no one
- 49:32is considering it abuse, including her.
- 49:34Kara: No.
- 49:35No one, again, no crime.
- 49:36Dani: I know.
- 49:36Kara: No crime was committed.
- 49:37Dani: Well, no arrests were made.
- 49:39Kara: This does, like, light a fire in her because then she's like, "I
- 49:42will be, like, a self-sufficient Deaf person, taking every opportunity
- 49:46that comes my way because I'm going to keep this food truck."
- 49:49Dani: This food truck.
- 49:50Kara: Yeah.
- 49:51So that's what's gonna happen.
- 49:52But after the Deaf Studies class, she's gonna go to the car wash at
- 49:55night to find a sleeping Travis.
- 49:57Dani: Yeah, he's staying there.
- 49:59Kara: She's like, "Hey.
- 49:59Bay told me you're here.
- 50:00Hello.
- 50:01I'm sorry for being an awful friend." And Travis is like, "Well, when
- 50:06I'm 18, my parents are kicking me out, and my birthday is soon."
- 50:08'Cause he keeps talking about his birthday coming up.
- 50:10Dani: Yeah.
- 50:11Kara: And Daphne's like, "What are you gonna do?" And he says,
- 50:13"Don't know." So that sucks.
- 50:15Dani: And she says, "When was the last time you ate something not from
- 50:18a vending machine?" And then she makes him waffles in her food truck.
- 50:22Kara: I personally, if someone was not having any nutrition, I
- 50:27perhaps would give them a more nutritious meal than waffles, but-
- 50:30Dani: Yeah.
- 50:31Kara: It's okay.
- 50:31It's okay.
- 50:32But he's thrilled.
- 50:33He loves waffles.
- 50:33Dani: Yeah, he's very happy.
- 50:35So they're having a little nighttime party in the food truck.
- 50:38Kara: And then Bay comes in, and she's like, "Can I join the party?"
- 50:41Dani: And she means it in more ways than one, 'cause she has come to
- 50:46ask Daphne how Daphne would feel if she were to transfer to Carlton.
- 50:51Kara: I thought she was gonna be like, "Guess what I found out about Angelo?"
- 50:55Dani: Yeah, no.
- 50:56Kara: But no, she's like, "I want to transfer to pilot program." They
- 51:01haven't really fully explained the pilot program thing yet but it sounds like
- 51:05hearing kids are coming to the school.
- 51:07Dani: Yeah.
- 51:07How do we feel about that?
- 51:09Do we think that Bay's sign is strong enough for her to go to a school where
- 51:13presumably all the teachers are also Deaf-
- 51:16Kara: Going to sign.
- 51:16Dani: And going to sign?
- 51:18Kara: I think she'll learn fast.
- 51:19Dani: I mean, I think she'll have to.
- 51:20I just, like, cannot imagine already in, being in a class where you're struggling.
- 51:27Like, I can't imagine being in math class and my math teacher teaching me in sign.
- 51:31Kara: That's so fair.
- 51:33Dani: 'Cause I know kids do that.
- 51:34Like, I know especially, like, younger kids, you know, where English is
- 51:38their second language, but Bay is-
- 51:41Kara: I will say my friend Rachel who listens to the pod, hello-
- 51:44Dani: Hey, shout out Rachel.
- 51:45Kara: Went to RIT.
- 51:46Didn't know a lick of sign, and had, just had to learn it.
- 51:50Dani: Wow.
- 51:51Shout out Rachel, I would actually love to hear about that experience.
- 51:54Kara: Yeah.
- 51:54Dani: So I guess that is what Bay is signing up for.
- 51:57Kara: I think she has a good grasp on sign already.
- 52:00Dani: Yeah.
- 52:00Kara: I guess for higher concepts, like, I don't know, trigonometry,
- 52:03that's gonna be a pain in the ass.
- 52:04I wouldn't even know how to do that.
- 52:06Dani: Yeah.
- 52:07Kara: But yeah, I think I'm like, if you're so unhappy at Buckner
- 52:11and you really wanna immerse yourself in sign and be closer
- 52:15with your sister, I'm all for that.
- 52:17I just hope that, part of me is like, I do hope that you will get a good education.
- 52:22Dani: Yeah, I also guess I feel like it has nothing to do with Daphne.
- 52:26Like, I think she's just like, "Well, I wanna get back together
- 52:28with Emmett and that's where Emmett goes." Like, it is such a, like,
- 52:3017-year-old thing, or 16 year old.
- 52:33No, we've established they're 17 now, right?
- 52:35Kara: Yes, but we just didn't have a birthday.
- 52:37Dani: Yeah, we just skipped their birthday, but that is such a
- 52:4017-year-old thing, I feel, to be like, "I wanna go to where my boyfriend
- 52:43goes to school. I don't even care."
- 52:45Kara: Yeah.
- 52:46Dani: But to go from, like, your really wealthy, private, well-connected school-
- 52:50Kara: And I think-
- 52:51Dani: to, like, Carlton that is struggling.
- 52:53Kara: And I think they're gonna talk about this in the next episode, 'cause I
- 52:56think she's gonna bring it up to John and Kathryn, and they're gonna be like, "Oh."
- 53:00Dani: Yeah.
- 53:00Kara: "I don't like that."
- 53:01Dani: Yeah.
- 53:02Any other thoughts about the episode?
- 53:04Kara: I think it was a great setup for the rest of the season.
- 53:06Dani: Yeah.
- 53:07Perfect first.
- 53:08Kara: A lot of new firsts happening.
- 53:10New food truck, new school.
- 53:11Dani: I'm loving Daphne's haircut.
- 53:13Kara: Yeah.
- 53:13Dani: I think both the girls' hair looks great.
- 53:15Kara: Love Bay's.
- 53:16Dani: Yeah, bay's is gorgeous.
- 53:17Kara: Yeah.
- 53:18New maybe state senator, new school, new money for Angelo, new baby, question mark?
- 53:25Dani: Oh my God.
- 53:25Kara: So many new things coming our way.
- 53:27Dani: How exciting.
- 53:28Kara: I love it.
- 53:29Dani: And more new episodes from us.
- 53:30Kara: Yes.
- 53:31Dani: We'll be back next week.
- 53:32Kara: Wee!
- 53:32Dani: Bye.
- 53:33Kara: Bye.
