- 0:09This is it, Jennifer! Your big break in TV! Fuck the front time, bitch!
- 0:19Music.
- 0:25I'm your boyfriend now, Nancy!
- 0:32Music.
- 0:42All right, guys, it's time to come to an end, an end of our Nightmare on Elm
- 0:47Street retrospective where we last left off.
- 0:51It was bittersweet. We had a nice little send-off with a new nightmare,
- 0:55and that was kind of the end of the Fandora-burned, creepy, pedophile man,
- 1:01as we know as Freddy Krueger.
- 1:04Now, we talked about Freddy versus Jason and in the Friday 13th retrospective,
- 1:10and we're not going to go over that again.
- 1:13If I'm not mistaken, you can certainly correct me, Trevor. We both actually
- 1:17rather quite, it was clever, and we quite enjoyed it.
- 1:20Yeah, it's entertaining. Salinas, yeah. Yeah, but it was still dark and brutal, you know?
- 1:27You kind of, you had the happy medium between the shit we were getting with the nightmares,
- 1:32but a nice element of the real, you know, the more blended, less tongue-in-cheek,
- 1:38in there as well so they balanced it
- 1:40well i think ronnie i think ronnie you sort of he
- 1:43was a very you know sensible choice to come
- 1:46on board he sort of knew what he was doing with it well he yeah yeah but i mean
- 1:53it's not perfect but i think he did it yeah but if i remember rightly it's been
- 1:57over a year since i watched it for you know i re-watched it basically for the
- 2:02the jason in retrospective,
- 2:04Friday the 13th retrospective, but I remember kind of enjoying it, you know?
- 2:08Yeah. So if you guys want to listen to that retrospect, we got a whole Friday
- 2:12the 13th retrospective is available.
- 2:14Yes. I see we get quite a few downloads on that, so we'll thank you for that.
- 2:17You're probably revisiting it
- 2:18as we mentioned it through this retrospective, but it is in our last one.
- 2:22I believe it's mixed with the 2009 remake, so it's actually a really good podcast.
- 2:27We're actually happy to have two solid films after the shit we're going through.
- 2:31Jason goes to hell, I remember It would be my least favourite of the Jason ones
- 2:35Yeah, we argued in that one Yeah But that was, you know, good banter on those
- 2:41Friday 13s And I always revisit them myself They're actually good fun, so check them out,
- 2:45But what we did on that Friday the 13th retrospective, we kind of went outside
- 2:49the box and we wanted to talk about where he went, what Jason was so popular.
- 2:53And we talked about a TV show that they put out. They marketed,
- 2:57the creators of Friday the 13th marketed to Friday the 13th fans,
- 3:01but it's not a Friday the 13th series.
- 3:03I remember it. Yeah, it's called Friday the 13th the series.
- 3:05And quite misleading. Remember watching it? It was quite misleading.
- 3:09Unfortunately, you know, it's too bad they misled the audience because the series
- 3:13wasn't bad. It was about an antique shop and each relic inside that shop would tell a story.
- 3:19And then something would happen and these adventure hunters in that shop would try to solve it.
- 3:26It was actually not a bad concept. It was doing okay, besides the misleading title.
- 3:31But it was all right. If you ever get a chance to check it out,
- 3:35it wouldn't hurt. It's not a bad little watch.
- 3:37I'm not giving a massive pass recommendation, but what the hell?
- 3:40I haven't seen the friday the 13th series since
- 3:43i was a kid but i remember enjoying it at the time
- 3:46along with another one we're going to talk about freddy's nightmares
- 3:49but the yes i remember being sort of miffed how
- 3:52they had sort of called it friday the 13th but there was no jason in it used
- 3:57to show it late night on channel 4 here i believe it was channel 4 and i would
- 4:01have sort of i always liked my sort of anthology series horror series back then
- 4:05you know still do yeah and if If you're prepared going in, not knowing it's Jason-esque,
- 4:12you might get more out of it.
- 4:14Yes, I would say so. Well, this leads us to Freddy. Nightmare on Elm Street
- 4:19in its prime in the late 80s.
- 4:21They went balls to the wall with the TV show. Boy.
- 4:26It ran for two seasons, 44 episodes of this shit.
- 4:31But I will say this. I watched a couple. We had a viewer who actually asked
- 4:36us if we were going to do it. And we actually do have it.
- 4:38We did have it already in store to talk about it briefly.
- 4:42And Paul, thank you. But either way, Paul, thanks for the shout out.
- 4:45Yeah, we're all prepared for this one.
- 4:47But it's nice that you're listening.
- 4:51But anyways, this was 44 episodes.
- 4:55And I watched a handful of them, so I'll be fair here.
- 5:01What happened was they had balls-to-the-wall rights, and they were in syndication,
- 5:05so they could do anything they wanted.
- 5:07There was no censure because they were on late night, like Friday night at midnight
- 5:12or something like that. Yeah, one of the cable channels in the U.S.? Yeah.
- 5:15And so they went all out.
- 5:17And if you like this, it kind of reminded me of Benny Hill.
- 5:24Meets mighty python meets bad roger
- 5:27corman horror yeah it's a bit bonkers i
- 5:30i remember enjoying it again as a kid what they did over here i don't believe
- 5:35i could be wrong but i don't believe it was actually shown here in the uk at
- 5:38the time but what they used to do is they used to get two episodes 245 minute
- 5:43episodes and basically put them out on video here so i was like renting them
- 5:47them from my video shops.
- 5:49They did. They were like double episodes. They did that in the States.
- 5:53Yeah. Because it wasn't, it wasn't, it was in syndication, so it wasn't mass produced on all these.
- 5:59Yes. So you could be in Minnesota and not really see it, but it did come out. I got to catch it on TV.
- 6:03Yeah, it'll come out to, like you said, they did the same thing with Masters
- 6:06of Horror a few years later.
- 6:08The series has, you had regular directors, but there's some real talent in the,
- 6:13the best ones could be No More Mr.
- 6:15Nice Guy, Which is pretty much the origin of Freddy And that was directed by
- 6:20Tobey Hooper And as we all know from Texas and Poltergeist,
- 6:24Yes. And it played, you know, the sets were obviously on a stage.
- 6:30They weren't on location. They couldn't afford to be doing that.
- 6:34But I'll tell you what, it did, it pushed the envelope.
- 6:38What this series does, it's, again, going back to that happy medium I talked
- 6:43to just a second ago with Freddie versus Jason.
- 6:45It blends humor, obviously, and a little tongue-in-cheek banter,
- 6:48but it really dives into the fact that this guy was a sicko.
- 6:52Yeah but the issue i do have
- 6:55with that i watched it re-watched a couple of episodes for
- 6:58the podcast i watched that um that first one
- 7:00the pilot and also the mcgaris one you know about the the
- 7:04necklace the amulet thing but yeah the sort of retcon the original film you
- 7:10know what happened to freddie i mean where were nancy's parents where was john
- 7:13saxon you know you could have had them there but played by different actors
- 7:16so that sort of niggled me but the acting's ropey oh it's bad bad, guys.
- 7:22I'm going to be blunt here. I wouldn't recommend it.
- 7:25There's a couple. It's kind of like the Friday the 13th we just talked about.
- 7:29Friday the 13th, sorry. The Nightmare on Elm Street we just talked about.
- 7:33And how there's flashes of hope here. We just talked about Freddy's Dead,
- 7:37which had some really good elements, but they went hokey instead and ruined it.
- 7:42This is what this does. There's a really nice, there's one called,
- 7:46oh my God, what's it called?
- 7:48Struck to by, I, there's one called Beef Boy Burger.
- 7:53Right, yes. It's about a kid whose father owns these chains of restaurants,
- 7:58Beefy Boy Burger, and his father pretty much makes him work all these overnights
- 8:01by himself and it's how he deals with that and how Freddie taunts him and stuff.
- 8:06And that was, that was a decent one.
- 8:10The first handful are actually pretty good. And that's because you've got Tom
- 8:14McLaughlin, I think did that one, who we talked about with, you know, Jason Lives.
- 8:18Yes. Yeah, Toby Hooper did the first one. You got Mick Garrison there.
- 8:23You've got William Malone, who I like as a director. You've got some really
- 8:26good directors here in the beginning.
- 8:29Yeah. And then they started cutting budgets and complaints were coming in.
- 8:34So as that was happening, the episodes got worse.
- 8:38But my point, long story short, is the Beefy Boy Burger, you really felt sorry for this kid.
- 8:44And then the other one was called My Sister's Keeper, which is actually a very
- 8:48clever story, which it could have made a pretty good movie after all the crap we just watched.
- 8:53It's about two twin sisters. One's a party girl, one's not, one's more of a
- 8:58nerdy girl, but the nerdy girl is the one having the nightmares, right?
- 9:01Yes. But you know how Nancy would come out of her nightmare and she'd have a
- 9:04burn in her arm or something? Like, yeah.
- 9:06Instead of her getting it, her sister's getting the wounds.
- 9:10I remember that one from when I was a kid, and certainly I also remember the,
- 9:15you know, the blonde twins from the,
- 9:17or they're not twins, they're blonde sisters from the pilot,
- 9:20you know, know the cop's daughters you know i
- 9:23remember them so do have but yeah i mean i was
- 9:26just about to say something similar i think there was a lot of good stories here
- 9:29you know especially for an anthology horror series and some
- 9:32of them didn't even weren't even about freddie you know
- 9:34and such as you know the mcgarris one where it's more about this sort of magical
- 9:38sort of necklace that's passed down from the dead mother to the daughter she's
- 9:42a runner so there's some yeah definitely some good stories but yeah it's like
- 9:47sort of filmed on videotape and stuff and sometimes you know there there was
- 9:51obviously budgetary problems.
- 9:53David J. Schou, he also wrote one of the later episodes as well.
- 9:57So, you know, and I watched the documentary about, you know,
- 10:01the Elm Street documentary, as we've referenced throughout this retrospective,
- 10:04and Mick Garris and stuff are interviewed, and they admit, yeah,
- 10:08it was a bit crazy, the series, you know,
- 10:10Do you know what? Mick Garris even said it got terrible. It was terrible. He even admits it.
- 10:16And I'm not disrespecting the actually directors who did most of them.
- 10:20The ones I'm mentioning, Mick Garris, Dwight Little. Dwight Little,
- 10:23you know him from Halloween 4 and Murder of 1600.
- 10:26Just a solid little director. He and Robert Englund himself,
- 10:31Tom McLaughlin, John Lafayette of Chucky fame, they only did like one in the
- 10:35beginning of the first season.
- 10:37Then it kind of, that's when, once you kind of, and I hate saying this,
- 10:40kind of got rid of those guys and you couldn't get any, you know,
- 10:44you just got guns for hire at this point.
- 10:46Yes. The material sank. And by the time you got to the second season,
- 10:50it was just really balls of all bad.
- 10:54To be honest, I would have to, you know, to give a fair comment,
- 10:57I would have to sort of watch all of the episodes.
- 11:01Again, I did watch a couple, as I said, for this podcast.
- 11:05There's not decent enough stories for, you know, a type of anthology series,
- 11:08but I think it's very much a case of going by what, you know,
- 11:11Mick Garris and the interview guys and all said, and you're saying here now,
- 11:14basically, you know, sort of, it was what it was, you know?
- 11:18You know? Yeah. And that's okay. You know, I mean, what I re-watched of it,
- 11:23it is, you know, sort of very much that sort of 80s sort of cheese TV horror show vibe.
- 11:30So, you know, you know, it's not, you know, Freddie basically is the Crypt Keeper,
- 11:35you know, from Tales from the Crypt and stuff, you know?
- 11:38And you know, yeah, that's okay. You know. Yeah.
- 11:42The whole series dwells around people's dreams. Freddy might not be part of it.
- 11:47He might just make the whole. He might, yeah. He's like, you know,
- 11:50the crypt keeper, like you said.
- 11:51So he'll, he'd pop in the middle and go, oh my God, he's in trouble or something stupid. Yeah.
- 11:56He'll run away. And the whole thing is focused on people's dreams.
- 12:01Yeah. And what happens if they go out and come out of control, that go out of control.
- 12:05That's all it is. I think there was only eight episodes in total that were actually
- 12:08about Freddy or actually you know Freddy. Yes. You know being a bastard basically.
- 12:13And those are the ones about with Mick Garris and McLaughlin and all these guys.
- 12:18But you know if you're a fan of,
- 12:22the series I wouldn't be I wouldn't watch it if you like Nightmare on Elm Street
- 12:27the original or the one we're about to talk about but I would recommend it if
- 12:31you like the hokiness of Dream Warriors and Freddy's dad.
- 12:35Now, if you like those, you actually might like to enjoy it, but don't.
- 12:40It's not freddie ask it's not going to be robert england
- 12:43doing full-time acting here on all these episodes yeah
- 12:46yeah it's basically it's a bit silly but
- 12:50like i say some good stories there's one that always sticks
- 12:52out in my mind from childhood watching where it was
- 12:55something like and it sounds a bit crazy like but uh it's basically
- 12:59these girls are are in hospital or
- 13:02something or some sort of it might even be the same clinic that nancy
- 13:04works in in the third one you know like the dream clinic
- 13:07and where basically they have developed this machine
- 13:10that can actually video record people's dreams so and
- 13:14freddy's you know jumping about in their dreams but they've got like video recording
- 13:17it you know while these people are dreaming it it's all a bit you know crazy
- 13:21but yeah that's what it is yeah but some of the stories like i said kind of
- 13:26would work better than some of the crap we're just watching thanks to the success
- 13:30of 2009's friday 13th remake they They were going to jump right on board to
- 13:34get the Nightmare on Elm Street ready to go.
- 13:35Some controversy that Robert Englund wasn't returning.
- 13:38To be honest with you guys, you shouldn't just because it's a reboot remake.
- 13:42There's no point bringing the original back for that.
- 13:46And so we, they quickly jumped on board and got Jackie Earle Harley, who, who I like a lot.
- 13:52I, particularly his story.
- 13:55I like the fact, what a comeback. This guy, I remember him from the Bad News
- 13:59Bears when I was a kid in the seventies, when he was a young kid himself.
- 14:03And Breaking Away, it's a good movie of Dennis Quaid and himself.
- 14:06And then he, you know, he's not leading man material.
- 14:10So he ended up delivering pizzas and doing odd jobs all the way up till he got
- 14:15a small role in a thing called Little Children where he played a pedophile.
- 14:20Pedophile, yeah. And yeah, it was Little Children where he was nominated for an Oscar.
- 14:25Where he, ironically enough, played a pedophile, which we'll get to here in a moment.
- 14:30Rorschach, the most popular character in the Watchmen series.
- 14:32These all came out around the same time.
- 14:34And he's been, you know, working steadily since.
- 14:38You know, Robocop, the reboot he was good in, playing to his strengths.
- 14:41So I just like that story that he's come, you know, he's a second career,
- 14:45which I really like to see, or second resurgence.
- 14:48Fair play to him. I also believe that due to the tonal, the huge tonal difference
- 14:54in this film compared to the, well, the Elm Street sequels that came before,
- 14:59I don't think it would have made sense to bring Robert Unglund on board.
- 15:03Yeah, this is a new Freddy. They're not, and I, and I, and I,
- 15:07and I applaud them for that.
- 15:10We talked about how the only thing I didn't like about Freddy's too tiny.
- 15:14So what do they do? They get a tinier actor. Yeah, it was just a way to say.
- 15:18But I thought about it. They couldn't go with our Kevin Bacon or or David Warner,
- 15:23they would have to stick with a tiny version.
- 15:26And the reason I say that, because we're going to get really a disturbing version
- 15:32of Freddy before he became Freddy.
- 15:34And he's a nerdy-esque character.
- 15:37He's kind of likable. And. And.
- 15:41And there's a nice misdirect in this film. And so we, we have to,
- 15:46we have to like him initially.
- 15:49And I think that's why, cause if you've got somebody tall and dark,
- 15:52you know, Kevin Bacon ass, he's going to be intimidating and scary right there.
- 15:56Yeah. Straight from the off. Yes. I would say as well that it's,
- 16:00I wouldn't say so much, you know, at first you like him, it's more,
- 16:04you feel sorry for him, but then there's the sort of rug powder.
- 16:07Yes. That's well, yeah, it all goes hand in hand, But so yeah,
- 16:11I believe that's why you couldn't make him hulking.
- 16:14Yes. Yes. He's very much like a witty sort of guy, like a wee sort of small
- 16:19sort of, you know, well, I wouldn't say gentle, but at first he appears that way.
- 16:25All right. For this one, well done with the cast. Get some talented people here.
- 16:29Kyle Garner, who we talked about with Smile and Scream 5.
- 16:32We got Academy Award winner Rooney Amara. It plays Nancy,
- 16:36Katie Cassidy, David's daughter, i like to
- 16:39say plays chris thomas decker jesse kellen lutz
- 16:42is dean the great clancy brown of course is cop guy
- 16:45and connie britain who i always like to see so nice
- 16:48to see a sober mom well and saying that there was also nice to see the the return
- 16:54of asshole parents because i like my asshole parents in the nightmare on elm
- 16:57street films all right they weren't like basically you know alcoholic sort of
- 17:02sluts basically but yeah but at least they were still assholes in other their ways.
- 17:09Yeah. But what's good about the film is that there's no teeny bopper scenes,
- 17:15not to take away from Nightmare, the original Nightmare, but you had that scream-esque
- 17:19high school huddles and sleepovers and the dances and shit like that.
- 17:24This, these people, these kids are already damaged.
- 17:28Yes. You're already in there and you're into, you know that from the very first scene.
- 17:32Now this movie got panned. I mean, panned.
- 17:36It made 120 million worldwide on 35 million budget. And that's just because people hated it.
- 17:42And I'm going to be with my cards on the table guys.
- 17:44Are you fucking kidding me? I don't get it. This take, I just, I don't get it.
- 17:51It is a very dark, dark take on an already dark film.
- 17:58I'm going to shock you here, and I'm going to say that I agree with you.
- 18:01Basically, I think what the problem is, it's weird because I was reading up
- 18:05on this, and even the cast and crew were saying that they regretted it,
- 18:08and they think they made a mistake, but I really don't.
- 18:11You know what I think the problem is? I think it's so tonally different from
- 18:16the wisecracking Freddy that everybody knew.
- 18:18I think that's what upset the fans, and even the critics who were basically
- 18:22expecting something in a similar vein.
- 18:25Maybe they were expecting something a little darker, but basically something
- 18:28similar i i think what hurts this
- 18:31film is that it is it's too serious and too
- 18:34dark but i i personally found
- 18:38found it all i i mean i first watched this whenever it was released out of the
- 18:42dvd so i'd only watched it once before coming to this podcast and watching it
- 18:47again and i i remember the opening scene in the final scene but i remember thinking
- 18:53that it it was quite forgettable but on this rewatch for the podcast i found it very compelling
- 18:58you know we always talk about reboots remakes and they're fine i'll take them,
- 19:03But as long as you don't damage the source material. Now, I'm not talking two,
- 19:08three, four, and five, and six. I'm talking the first one, okay?
- 19:12Nightmare on Elm Street will always be better than this because it's the original.
- 19:15I always believe Alien will be better than Aliens because they're the originators.
- 19:18Yes, of course. They are the go-to. They set the groundwork.
- 19:21But what this film does, it doesn't damage that source material.
- 19:25If you almost change the names, they actually did in this one,
- 19:29but you still have Nancy in it, is the lead.
- 19:33But you could have almost, this is the sequel that could have been,
- 19:37but. Oh yeah. It's not, it's obviously a reboot.
- 19:41But the, I mean, the diner scene, before you even get the title, the titles,
- 19:46the Nightmare on Elm Street title onto it, we get a very disturbing and bloody
- 19:52death that looks like suicide by just pretty much ripping his own head off with a blade.
- 19:58Yeah. And that's the death scene of Dean.
- 20:01Yes. I mean, you clearly see, and we talked about the acting.
- 20:05I know the actors in that, I'm sure you've gone on to do other things.
- 20:08And they, like we talked about Heather Leathercam's journey and she's done really
- 20:11well for herself, Johnny Epp clearly and so forth and so forth. Rich Arquette.
- 20:15But I do think a lot of the acting is, you know, hokey, but there's no hokey in this, this acting.
- 20:22This is completely, they sell. It's all played dead straight.
- 20:25You kill him, Lutz, who's this big, tall jock looking guy.
- 20:31He is, you can tell right away from these opening sequence, he's vulnerable and so forth.
- 20:35And this whole diner sequence is just so beautifully shot.
- 20:40It's directed by Sammy O'Bayer who does music videos and it does have that music
- 20:45video kind of feel, but it's not like bubblegum music video.
- 20:51No. It's almost something Dining Snails would maybe do. Yeah.
- 20:55Yeah, so you're pretty much. It's Grimm and play it dead straight from the off.
- 20:59Exactly. So you're pretty much known, Dean and Chris are going to be your main
- 21:04characters, and then you're thrown off when Dean ends up taking his life with a knife.
- 21:08And Chris is obviously playing the Tina role.
- 21:12Yes. Played by Katie Cassidy.
- 21:15And this whole thing, I think you kind of mentioned a little bit,
- 21:20the first time Realme Street always lets you know, hey, we're playing it safe.
- 21:23We'll have a little fun banter, some, you know, teeny bopper humor just to keep
- 21:28like, you know, it's only, it's only, it's only a dream, but I guarantee you,
- 21:34Wes, I don't know what Wes thought about this.
- 21:38So I, I never looked up. I actually should have, because I almost think this
- 21:43is what Wes would have liked to have told just because they,
- 21:45they focus on the pedophile period.
- 21:47That's it. Well, in fact, in fact, what I love about this, he doesn't kill kids.
- 21:52I like the fact he's a molester. I know that sounds horrible to be saying that,
- 21:57but this whole podcast, we've been saying, they've been playing,
- 22:00no, no, he killed kids. They only mention it kind of briefly.
- 22:03No, the guy is a pedophile. And this one, they rip out the killing of the kids
- 22:08and put in that he's a pedophile.
- 22:10It's all back this one. With Ballsy. Yes. And I don't think Wes could have got
- 22:15away with that back in the mid eighties.
- 22:17No although if you look at things like last house on
- 22:20the left and stuff you could even argue that this elm street
- 22:23is more in sort of tone and the
- 22:25same sort of well not to say but more in tone with last
- 22:29house on the left and the original nightmare on elm street
- 22:31you know if this was just film in
- 22:35and of itself and the named the character
- 22:37a different name i think it would have been getting glowing
- 22:41reviews but obviously it's freddy krueger it's
- 22:44a nightmare on elm street remake and you know as
- 22:46a rule i'm not particularly fond of remakes but this
- 22:50does something they you know i
- 22:53think there's a lot to be praised about this and i think it's i also think it's
- 22:57grossly underrated yeah because i'm a big fan of mr x and this film is full
- 23:02of them you have the funeral you have their funeral scene and first we think
- 23:07freddy's going to come back and get the kids of of the people that killed them.
- 23:11So you're introduced to Clancy Brown and Connie Britton, the two main parents,
- 23:16and you know, right away they're hiding something.
- 23:20And so we go with what we know. They killed him. He's come to get revenge, but it flips it.
- 23:27He's not there to get revenge on them. He's there to get revenge on the kids who snitched on him.
- 23:33Yeah. And we find out that these kids went to preschool and
- 23:36they all went together and they've kind of
- 23:39separated one and the kids have kind of forgotten who
- 23:43Freddy was what a wonderful redirect from the original material yeah it's basically
- 23:50although yeah he's not out to get a revenge on the parents he's actually the
- 23:54kids themselves he's out to get because they basically told on him because he was a pedophile.
- 24:00Yes, exactly what I just said. Thank you. Yes, for backing her up. For just emphasizing.
- 24:06I'm backing you up and you're fucking knocking me? Whoa, fuck me.
- 24:11That's a different level of asshole.
- 24:12Why don't you go watch Squirtle? Even for you? Forget it. I was going to go
- 24:17back to Squirtle and Cowboy.
- 24:21But yeah, and then it plays on the fact that.
- 24:28He may have been innocent. He might have been innocent. Now,
- 24:31I think that's the one downfall.
- 24:33No, I think that was right. No, no, no. I mean, sorry. Now, it's downfall.
- 24:38It's clever, but I wish it stuck with that.
- 24:41I'd rather it had been he was innocent the whole time.
- 24:45Yeah. That would have been a really powerful twist where actually the reason
- 24:50he's out for revenge on the kids is not because they told on him.
- 24:54It's because he was innocent. That would be a real twist.
- 24:58Yes. That's where I thought they were going.
- 25:01But I think they decided, listen, we can't have this guy.
- 25:05We have to make him the bad guy because that would really piss people off.
- 25:11And then because I think the problem with that, that you come out of there somber and depressed.
- 25:16And so you had to have the villain. I agree with what you're saying.
- 25:20And the funny thing is they weren't here to make a sequel. Right.
- 25:24They were here to do a one-off film. There's no way the studio was thinking
- 25:27a sequel to this, even in whatever direction they took, because where'd you go with it? It's so dark.
- 25:34You cannot take this. They probably would have, to be fair, if it had taken off.
- 25:39In fact, in actual fact, Jackie or Hayley or Harley, whatever it is,
- 25:44he was actually signed on for two or three films, actually.
- 25:47So it was Rooney and Mara for at least two films. But I know what you're saying as well,
- 25:51because it's hard to take this somewhere else, and it would have i think got
- 25:54a lot sillier if they hadn't made sequels to it
- 25:57but i think essentially why they didn't go
- 26:00for you know the fact that it turns out that
- 26:02he was innocent even though it's set up like that is
- 26:05because basically everybody would have been on freddy's side they didn't want
- 26:09freddy krueger i know sort of with robert england you know his freddy he became
- 26:13like the sort of lovable boogeyman but i with this i i just just don't think
- 26:19that they They sort of were afraid of audiences being too much on Freddie's side.
- 26:24If he had been innocent, if it turned out that he was innocent.
- 26:29There's a particular scene, the flashback scene, where he's running from Clancy Brown and stuff.
- 26:33And you don't know yet. The first time you watch this, you don't know, is he innocent or not?
- 26:39And they're chasing him and he's going, I didn't do anything.
- 26:41You do feel sorry for him.
- 26:43And that's why I brought up you had to go with a
- 26:46smaller actor character because you gotta make
- 26:49him vulnerable in the beginning totally totally totally
- 26:52yeah and even the scene you know where he's in the garden and stuff you know
- 26:56with it's again another flashback it's like you're sort of he you know he seems
- 27:01a bit harmless and stuff and it's very well handled let's just say uh you have the scene where.
- 27:10Where Chris gets it. Yes. Big nod to Tina's death.
- 27:15It is more brutal, I think, than Tina's. And the reason I say that,
- 27:19I don't know how to explain it.
- 27:21She's just thrashed around like the shark's doing to the swimmer in the beginning of Jaws.
- 27:28Just bang, the sound effects of the, of he's banging her so hard through the
- 27:33walls and the ceiling and the floor.
- 27:34You can hear the swoosh and the
- 27:37impact of her hitting and then it's just one sharp blade
- 27:41well the blades through her stomach yeah
- 27:44and then plops in the bed it is terrifyingly
- 27:48just disturbing again of
- 27:51course i know there's obviously like there's like basically a
- 27:54dream monster from you know doing the kind of stuff but it's it's
- 27:58it's a realism of the the deaths as well
- 28:01also i have to say the realism of the fretting
- 28:04makeup on this and voice which is so much more effective
- 28:07yeah it's got that raspy you know
- 28:11yeah yeah apparently it was digitally enhanced in
- 28:14post-production to give it more of a sort of a slightly otherworldly sort of
- 28:18tinge to it but it's just you know what again this is another clever thing about
- 28:23it freddy still has his one-liners but the delivery of them is much more sinister
- 28:29yeah i've written written some down, they're fucking terrifying.
- 28:32And so when they, when the.
- 28:36The film, all it does is give a little wink to the original.
- 28:41There's a kind of a really quick reenactment sequence of, of Tina in the, in the, uh, body bag.
- 28:48And then there's one that didn't work. One of my favorite shots we talked about
- 28:52Nightmare on Elm Street is when Nancy's sleeping and the wall comes out and
- 28:56it's Freddy coming to get her kind of, you know, before he kills Tina. So it's, yeah.
- 29:01Well, they do that here, but instead of using practical of actual Robert Englund
- 29:06coming through this rubber thing, it's CGI and it looks terrible. Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:11Some of the, you know, where this film is let down, I think mainly,
- 29:14for me anyway, is with the use of CG sometimes.
- 29:19I don't think they use a lot of it. They don't really use it as a crutch.
- 29:24But yeah, I hear what you're saying. There's a nice shot where,
- 29:28I believe it's when Chris, is it Chris or Nancy? I forgot which one.
- 29:35She's investigating Where she came from I believe it was Nancy,
- 29:40Yes And she goes up to the,
- 29:43She waits for her mom to go to sleep Because she's starting to catch on Something's
- 29:48not right here because she saw the photo She recognizes Dean or somebody Yes
- 29:52So when mom goes to sleep She goes up to the attic,
- 29:57She's going to look for things.
- 30:00And I like the fact We don't, we just, I just, I just fall in this fool.
- 30:04I thought she was just investigating the attic.
- 30:06So she goes in there and then she sees her little baby clothes with fucking the claw.
- 30:12That's Chris. That's actually Chris. That's Chris. That's Christine. Okay. I wasn't sure.
- 30:15This is before, right before she died. And then she got, you know,
- 30:18the little, the little kid outfit.
- 30:20She's five years old at the time. And it's got the Freddy claws tears through
- 30:23it, which is a, you know, terrible thought to have in your head.
- 30:27That's a five-year-old child's dress.
- 30:29But right there, I knew she's dreaming.
- 30:32Yeah, so yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. And Freddie sort of jumps out a bit at her.
- 30:36Yes. And in this one, Freddie plays with his food.
- 30:41He torments her for a while before he gets her and he does the same thing with
- 30:44Nancy. He torments them all?
- 30:46Well, even the male characters? Yeah, he does, but I think he really does it
- 30:51with the girls for obvious reasons, which is creepy, but we know what we're doing with that.
- 30:55Especially Nancy, yes. Yeah, this, and I, it's just, it just works so well.
- 31:02And every scene, there's not a dull moment in the scene. It just keeps going.
- 31:06Yep. The Jesse character who, who, who gets it in you know the same death,
- 31:13that they got in the first one but he just gets gutted through the that's where
- 31:18I think you're right about the CGI I thought that was kind of poor when he gets
- 31:22done yeah although Jesse does survive,
- 31:25yes yeah.
- 31:27Well no he dies in the prison no that's not Jesse that's Chris's boyfriend Jesse's,
- 31:34Nancy's boyfriend no no or am I getting my names mixed up I might be getting
- 31:39my names mixed up That's Quentin. Oh, yeah. That's Quentin.
- 31:43Yes, sorry, you're right. Jesse's the, but yeah. I've got the character,
- 31:47Freddie, just got the names mixed up. Yeah.
- 31:48But Jesse, when he is in the prison and he gets it, the two best lines,
- 31:53you kind of mentioned how disturbing they are.
- 31:56There's one where Jesse's screaming, what do you want for me?
- 31:58And there's actually a great misdirect where Freddie goes, oh,
- 32:02can you give me back my time?
- 32:04Can you turn back time?
- 32:06So meaning, whoa, is he innocent? You bring back the dead? Yeah,
- 32:09she's like, is he innocent here? What's going on?
- 32:12And there's a line where he says, why are you screaming? I haven't even cut you yet.
- 32:16Ah, and then, and then I'm going to roll here.
- 32:21And then when Jesse is dead, we think he's dead.
- 32:25He gives him a, he's, we go back to his dream and he's hung upside down or whatever
- 32:29he's doing and he goes, you know, the human heart stop after the heart stops
- 32:35beating, your brain goes on for seven minutes, right?
- 32:38We have six more minutes to play. And that is factually, medically true.
- 32:45Whenever the heart stops, the brain can go on for like seven minutes or whatever.
- 32:48There's a similar line in Exorcist 3 Legion where Brad Dourif's,
- 32:53you know, Prisoner X character,
- 32:55the serial killer, he sees something similar where basically a decapitated head
- 32:59can continue to see for so many seconds after it's been basically removed from the body.
- 33:05Goes whenever i do that whenever i decapitate someone i
- 33:08like to just for a little just for a little joke i
- 33:11like to show the head it's but it's severed
- 33:14body you know from the head it's yeah dark shit
- 33:17like so it is and again yeah it works
- 33:20here too one of my favorite lines is actually a play on
- 33:23the line from dream master where
- 33:26nancy is again it's another reference to the original that
- 33:29we've discussed the marshmallow stars where she's
- 33:32basically trying to run down a corridor in the dream in the elm street house
- 33:35yeah and he goes how's that for a
- 33:38wet dream but again this is that's how
- 33:41he kills you know fucking nurse boobies fucking boyfriend
- 33:44and dream master uh yeah but it's a good line and that but that whole scene
- 33:48is brilliant because i have that in my notes it's very yeah you know the the
- 33:51whole shining pile of blood crap and the whole floor becomes blood yes jumps
- 33:56into it it's just waiting through it and then she comes through in slow motion
- 33:59and And the blood comes out through slow motion through the ceiling.
- 34:02It's a fucking gorgeous shot. Yeah.
- 34:04Yes. And the line itself. Well, again, it's also a tip of the hat to Marshmallow
- 34:08Stars from the original.
- 34:10But also, he harvests that for a wet dream.
- 34:13But again, the delivery here, although it's the same line, it's much more sinister.
- 34:18Yeah. It's not played for jokes.
- 34:21No. No. And so, after Jesse and Chris get it, we're 35 minutes into it.
- 34:26But so you get, you get pretty much two stories here, three stories you've got.
- 34:31Obviously we just told Jesse's Chris and Dean's actually in the beginning and
- 34:35now you've got Nancy and Quentin's and then he even got the sheriff and the mom.
- 34:40Yes. But. Freddie's backstory. Yeah.
- 34:43Yeah. And I liked the fact that when Quentin tells her in the library,
- 34:47just pretty much a one line to fix it all.
- 34:49You could be so much, you could be so tired.
- 34:53You can, you can sit there and not sleep all all you want, but you'll eventually
- 34:57be dreaming, but you will, you'll still be awake, you just don't know what you're dreaming,
- 35:00micro naps and they're a real thing as well, so that's where that's the one
- 35:05mind fix we should have had two films ago, like probably most of the sequels. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:12It would've made more sense when I kept bitching. Is he sleeping or not? I'm confused.
- 35:15Yeah, yeah, exactly. You know what I absolutely loved as well, it's just a small thing.
- 35:21It's quentin whenever he's doing his research and he's
- 35:25looking up about the pied piper and the comparison of you
- 35:28know freddy krueger to the pied piper you know in classic literature that was
- 35:31just i just love that probably just like a bit of a nerdy thing for me but and
- 35:35i'm not even you know you know what i mean just that whole connecting freddy
- 35:39to sort of you know the pied piper which is a really dark story you know just
- 35:43i thought that was really cool well i also think i also like the fact that they kept in,
- 35:48it's not this mirror image, but the house looks a lot like Nancy's house in
- 35:52the original Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 35:54Yeah. And they kind of kept true to what it looks like, just because it's just
- 35:59as iconic as the Mike Myers house or the Sawyer's house, you know?
- 36:02But they had to have it in, in some way.
- 36:04Yeah, exactly. I do love when the mom, now the conversation is so much more,
- 36:09I guess you can say adult, than what we got with Nancy.
- 36:13Yeah. I went to her mom and goes, who's Freddy, mom?
- 36:16It says she's writing his hat They're more
- 36:19like She goes look mom who's who's Friday mom
- 36:22And she's like I don't know Can we call yes and then She goes to the phone and
- 36:27phones Classy burner going she's starting to Remember I have a question Which
- 36:32was a good line because Well he says They're starting to remember Well still
- 36:38that's a throwaway because it could mean,
- 36:40We don't want Friday's name Being remembered because we don't want him to come
- 36:44back to get you, they just see, they don't want. I have a question. No, let me finish.
- 36:50They, they, they, they turn everything around because in the original,
- 36:54they say, we, you don't want them to remember it because you don't want Freddy coming out to get you.
- 36:59They don't want, they want his, his memories gone.
- 37:01The only reason they don't want to remember in this one, they don't want to
- 37:05have them have to relive being molested as a child.
- 37:10That's the only reason they don't want Freddy's Dan mentioned,
- 37:12and that is a nice little flip of the tables.
- 37:17Also, I don't think they want to go to jail because technically,
- 37:19well, not technically, they have committed vigilante murder.
- 37:23So they could go to jail. I think they're a bit self-serving as well,
- 37:26the parents. But yes, they do care for their kids, obviously.
- 37:29Why? Look at this. Why did they just move?
- 37:33I know. And also, yeah, why were they in basically the same town and the same
- 37:40street as each other if they didn't want the kids sort of reconnecting after all the years?
- 37:45I know. but yes i i do have a
- 37:48question see the kids not remembering about freddie
- 37:51and the abuse i don't i'm not too sure if it's i
- 37:54don't i don't think it's properly addressed but is that just down to them being
- 37:58so young or was there like some sort of hypnotism or whatever or did they you
- 38:02know bring them to therapy to try and repress their memories no i they could
- 38:06do that because if we went to therapy it'd have to be reported so the whole
- 38:10thing was well this is Because, yeah, the whole thing was.
- 38:13It was a cover up. Yeah. It was just brainwashing the kids by themselves,
- 38:17you know, hiding all the kid photos and stuff.
- 38:19I do think it's silly. And separating them because they don't separate them because they're there.
- 38:23Exactly. I'm just separating them, but not separating them. And Quentin, they're all together.
- 38:27They're right there. Now they do play, they do kind of play on that when they
- 38:31go research it and they try to find other people in the photo and they've moved
- 38:36on, which is, so they do kind of play on that.
- 38:40They do. Yeah. And they have obviously died mysterious deaths.
- 38:45I like the video of the Asian kid in the photo who's obviously grown up and
- 38:49he's like making videos, he's being tormented.
- 38:51Yeah. Like banging his head and stuff, you know.
- 38:53That was pretty well done. I love the flashback when they're telling the story
- 38:57of Freddie was a gardener and he is, he's so nice to the kids,
- 39:01especially, especially Nancy's character.
- 39:03And he is, he's just a very likable character.
- 39:07And, but, and then you're like, oh man, if this guy's innocent,
- 39:11this is going to be fucking balls on the wall.
- 39:13Yeah. And then he goes Do you want to go to my secret cave I'm like ah fuck
- 39:18Yeah I was about to say It basically is.
- 39:23Pedophile dungeon From what of a better phrase And yeah that's when you realise,
- 39:29He's fucking not innocent,
- 39:31It's all true And this is what the first one Don't know if that's what they
- 39:36wanted to go with But I think that's what the first one was missing,
- 39:39There's no misdirection In the first one it's still good
- 39:42and i still think it's superior because it's the original but i
- 39:46i i do think it's missing some clever misdirects
- 39:49and this is full of them well they don't even mention that
- 39:52freddy's pedophile they do sort of it's very subtly sort of hint at it when
- 39:56he does the tongue thing talking about the original but with this i mean it's
- 40:00like basically it's out there it's a mean plot thread it is the main plot thread
- 40:06you know whereas in the original he's just it's not even mentioned that he's a paedophile,
- 40:12which he was, because, well, it was a different time, and you know,
- 40:15there was censorship issues more so back then, so they couldn't really,
- 40:19sort of, I'm assuming, get down that route, it would turn into something completely
- 40:24different, and that would turn into basically what we get with this one. Yeah, and then the.
- 40:31Freddie kind of plays with also trying to coerce, I guess you could say,
- 40:37or mislead Quentin into believing he was set up because when he's swimming and
- 40:43he has his little dream thing, whatever happens there,
- 40:45he, Freddie shows him what happened to him and the whole time he didn't do anything.
- 40:50It's what you're talking about when he's being chased and it's almost like the
- 40:54bully's coming to get the, the nerd kid, you know, and, and you He really,
- 40:58you know, and so it plays on that.
- 41:01Yeah, and Quentin actually confronts everybody at this point going,
- 41:06you killed an innocent man.
- 41:08Oh, yeah. He's even doubting himself. He said, we were fucking five-year-olds.
- 41:12What would we know? We would have told you anything, you know?
- 41:15And then you're sort of saying, oh, shit, you know, this is an innocent man.
- 41:19It's very cleverly played.
- 41:21And the father, played by Clancy Brown, who's this big hulking guy.
- 41:26Yes. He's he gets tongue tied because the kids, right? Yes.
- 41:30And even the father's doubting himself, you know, the kids doubting himself
- 41:34and now the father's doubting himself.
- 41:36Yes. Yeah. And he like locks the door and says, you basically says you shut the fuck up.
- 41:41You know, basically no one must know about this, you know? So it's like,
- 41:45you know, playing into the coverup thing as well.
- 41:47Like a, there's a shot where Quentin's going nuts and he needs to sleep pill thing, whatever is.
- 41:54His uppers. Yes. And the pharmacist won't give it to him because clearly he's, you know, addicted.
- 42:00You're not getting your drugs, kid. I mean.
- 42:04That's a bad sales pitch, the way you approach that one. Yeah, exactly.
- 42:08But there's, my favorite shot in the film is actually where Nancy goes in to
- 42:14the drugstore to get him.
- 42:15And then she's in the aisle in the drugstore, you know, full of medicine and whatever's on there.
- 42:20And in the back, you see the door of the store for behind her and then you see
- 42:24it's just a quick flash of Freddy and another quick flash Freddy and the whole
- 42:30aisle slowly per flash turns into the boiler room.
- 42:36It's actually a really nice little edit in the way they transition.
- 42:41I also really like how the border between Freddy's dream world and our world
- 42:47is very very thin and you know it's like Like, you know, Freddy's always there
- 42:52on the edge trying to break through.
- 42:54I just think that was really well done. Yeah.
- 42:58And here's what I don't get. So they decide they're going to go to the Madden
- 43:02preschool and they're going to investigate themselves.
- 43:05There has to be a back wall, right? Or a hidden room, you know?
- 43:10Yeah, a dungeon. Yes. So here's what I don't get.
- 43:14So they get to the preschool and they go down and there's Freddy's little,
- 43:18because he was living there.
- 43:19They all know that. Everyone knows that. That was a known fact. He stayed on site.
- 43:23Why the fuck is Freddy's glove that he's working on, because it's kind of a
- 43:27work in progress kind of glove, sitting right there?
- 43:30And where are the parents? Didn't they investigate this and see that?
- 43:34And wouldn't stuff be confiscated?
- 43:36Or the police just, were they just off on fucking holiday that day?
- 43:40Well, remember, they didn't go to the police. Remember that.
- 43:43I know that, but do you think the police would have maybe suspected something
- 43:46with you know what basically that this um you know this preschool place being
- 43:51closed down and stuff and derelict also the parents after basically killing
- 43:56freddie you know in real life.
- 43:58Didn't really fucking for for this big cover-up that didn't really cover their
- 44:02tracks they left a lot of evidence behind not just incriminating evidence of
- 44:06freddie but also for the that would have been incriminating for themselves was
- 44:09he so then the plot wouldn't the work.
- 44:11But Clancy Brown was the sheriff still at that time.
- 44:15No, he was a teacher. I thought he was a sheriff.
- 44:18Oh, he's a teacher? Oh my God, I'm losing it. Why did I thought he was a sheriff?
- 44:22He's a head master. Oh, he's a head master. That's right.
- 44:25That's right. Yes. Well, I just don't get, why didn't they look for evidence?
- 44:29Why didn't they go down in the basement and go, oh, look at this,
- 44:31look at a fucking glove with razor blades and look at this.
- 44:33And any cop, if they called the cops, they would have easily found everything that these two find.
- 44:39Yeah, exactly. I mean, these are basically, I know they're like victims and
- 44:43stuff, but they're basically two dumb teens as well at the same time. Yeah.
- 44:46But yet they have no problem doing a bit of detect.
- 44:49I mean, on multiple levels, they're doing all sorts of detective work, you know?
- 44:53Now. One thing that, no, no, one thing that I have always found Rooney Mara
- 45:00and they're always sort of, you know, troubled, depressed face.
- 45:04That's all she does. Whatever role she's in. It's kind of annoying.
- 45:07She's, I don't like her. Yeah. I like her sister. I think her sister's a funner actor.
- 45:12Yeah, but I would say that she does, that sort of persona does suit the character
- 45:20of Nancy, because Nancy is a bit even in the original with Heather Langenkamp,
- 45:25Nancy is a bit of a misery guts anyway.
- 45:28So she does sort of suit the role, but generally Rune Mara just does the whole
- 45:34sort of depressed, tormented sort of of persona does to my head.
- 45:38Yeah. I, I, I don't like her. She's the one, she's a one trick pony. They call it.
- 45:43Yeah. You know, you know who Kate Mara, her sister who acts.
- 45:48Yes, that's right. Yes. And Rooney Mara.
- 45:50You know who their, their family is? No.
- 45:54Her father, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure, I know it's two.
- 45:57I could get the teams wrong.
- 45:59Her father owns the New York Giants NFL team.
- 46:03And the grandfather owns the Buffalo Bills.
- 46:06Right. So yeah. There's money there, but kudos to those two deciding to do something
- 46:11a little different, you know, and, you know, I know Rooney Mara,
- 46:15I think is engaged to Joaquin Phoenix or married is he, maybe? I don't know.
- 46:20I don't know. There's two actors. My God, they're in a movie together and I
- 46:25saw, I turned it out, they're so boring. Oh, what's up?
- 46:29I'm upset. I'm sad. I was like, oh my God.
- 46:33She's also in a film called Ghost Story from a
- 46:36a few years ago which is actually a pretty good film but she does
- 46:39again once again play the depressed sort of you know
- 46:41the the husband's just been killed and and stuff
- 46:44so she does you know that you know sad face basically acting
- 46:48you know gurning you know yeah type yeah and
- 46:50it's just there's a scene where she's like eating a pie but
- 46:54at the same time crying and i've heard a lot of people say oh this is so emotional
- 46:58and such a good brilliantly played scene and it's just and it's prolonged and
- 47:02it's just like it just just i couldn't wait for it to be over it was just doing
- 47:05in my head you know it's like just eat the fucking pie and stop gurning would you you know,
- 47:12but it's actually quite a good film that ghost story and.
- 47:16Yeah, I mean, again, yeah, it is a sort of one-trick sort of persona acting
- 47:21type thing that she does.
- 47:23But that being said, it works for this film.
- 47:26Yes, it suits the role of Nancy. Exactly. So when they find the little cave.
- 47:32Yeah. When, you know, at first you're still going with it.
- 47:35And then once it gets even darker, once Quentin finds the Polaroids.
- 47:39The photos. And they don't show you anything.
- 47:42He just begs her not to look at it. Thankfully. yeah because
- 47:45it must have been horrific yes but it's
- 47:49a it's a nice scene and now we're all on the
- 47:51same page all right this this fucker needs to
- 47:54get it well actually reacting to the photos you know it's confirmation that
- 47:58yes this is all true you know he was a pedophile yeah and also it's a good nod
- 48:05hard to the original horror they defeat freddie by like nancy in the original
- 48:10they drag I come into the real world.
- 48:12Yeah. They're going to keep true to that. And that's the way it should always be.
- 48:16Yes. And they do it right. I mean, when they, they come, they cut off his hand,
- 48:20get rid of his weapon, and then they fucking set him on fire.
- 48:23That's it. That's all you need to do.
- 48:26Yeah. It's pretty much the only way to kill Freddy. And then,
- 48:29well, he'll come back, of course.
- 48:31But this whole, this whole sequence of, this is where the blood in the floor
- 48:36and coming through the wall and everything.
- 48:38Thing and he's when he's
- 48:41on the bed with her it's like fuck he goes your
- 48:44mouth says no but your body says yes and she's
- 48:48in the dress that she wore when she was five years old you
- 48:51know he's not thinking of her as in 17 old right now and that's how fucking
- 48:56disturbing this is yeah you know and it's even inappropriate and illegal for
- 49:02her to be be 17 and him out but he's even going further you know when it's hit
- 49:07and it's yeah it's it's nasty.
- 49:10Yeah, I mean, he, yeah. I mean, it's not like, you know.
- 49:16Well acted, very well acted. Yeah, I mean, it's to the point where you can see
- 49:20Jackie O'Hare going, fuck, I'm uncomfortable saying this to her.
- 49:24But you go with it, they're actors. But it does play well.
- 49:30And I like the fact, I personally, I know he signed on to do more,
- 49:34but I don't know if it would work.
- 49:36I just actually think That it ends I think it would have caused the risk of
- 49:41I don't know, I just think At the end of the day, you've taken away all the
- 49:45fun Freddy This is not fun Freddy anymore Oh no, that's That's fucking dead.
- 49:51Freddy's dead, basically, fun Freddy's dead This is gritty And sort of I have
- 49:57to say, being completely honest Compelling, you know, dramatically,
- 50:01It does, and that's And that's what
- 50:05kind of ruins the ending i mean you kind of went back to the ending
- 50:07that ruined the first one with the mom getting it
- 50:10now i think they had to i think they because you
- 50:13know although the fans were pretty upset with this anyway i think
- 50:16they you know they'll say we'll have to give a final score here but and something
- 50:21similar to the the original you know with the the basically the shop mannequins
- 50:25trailed through a fucking door a door window you know yeah no it's a night it's
- 50:30a good death don't even be around The eyeballs get gouged,
- 50:34but it just didn't seem to fit for the film we just saw. Yes, with the grim tone.
- 50:39A lot of people have also criticized this online, saying, oh,
- 50:42none of the characters are empathetic and stuff.
- 50:46Well, you know, to me, they're more grounded and more believable.
- 50:52But how are you supposed to be empathetic? The whole thing is about them depression and can't sleep.
- 50:58It's an ugliness. Yeah, that's what I mean. It's more grounded.
- 51:00It's an underbelly, a town.
- 51:02It's more grinded? It's, you know, Springwoods is so-called,
- 51:06you know, nice, you know, picket fences, picket fences and yada, yada, yada.
- 51:11But there's an underbelly here where these people could have possibly killed an innocent man.
- 51:15So what are they supposed to do? Go on a song and dance? Yeah.
- 51:18And I do think there's empathy. A lot of people.
- 51:21I do think there's empathy when the sheriff and Quentin, especially when Quentin
- 51:27finds out he might have killed an innocent man.
- 51:29And he approaches his father on that and with the mother getting approached
- 51:33on it, you can see in their face, they're like, shit, we might've fucked this up.
- 51:38And you can see it by the way, the actor's selling it.
- 51:41They're not going to go, oh, I'm empathetic. Oh my God.
- 51:44No. Well, I think there was a lot of people were looking. Yeah.
- 51:48Were basically the dream warriors they were looking basically jennifer
- 51:52rubin with flick knives and a mohawk and you know
- 51:54the wizard master and stuff and this is completely completely
- 51:58different than tone which is realization which is
- 52:01funny that's what we don't want anymore though we had enough
- 52:04of that every freddy film has that stupid song
- 52:07and dance this goes back to what west want
- 52:10but west's vision west wanted dark and
- 52:12gritty freddy's scary because of the first one no
- 52:16freddie movies are scary after the first one yeah this rips
- 52:20all those what i did miss what what
- 52:22i did miss at the very end was a
- 52:25totally inappropriate damn rap song you should have
- 52:31had the fat boys and robert england with are you ready for
- 52:34freddie at the very end well they
- 52:37had they didn't have a rap they never raps on at the end no they
- 52:40did that's what i missed oh yeah yeah i
- 52:43can see it like yeah tupac at the end of this fucking you
- 52:47know very disturbing little film yeah that's exactly
- 52:50why yeah are the three warriors so you know
- 52:53what's funny i get why fans might not like it because of its very dark tone
- 52:56but i'm shocked critics didn't because critics probably should appreciate this
- 53:00more going hey they finally went their direction because the rest of the films
- 53:03they hated so why would they appreciate this especially if the fact that they
- 53:07like new nightmare new nightmare is more is is grounded.
- 53:10Why wouldn't you like this one? I don't get it. I don't get it.
- 53:14Well, that schools the extra mile with the groundedness.
- 53:17So with those, you know. Yeah.
- 53:20Yeah. So there you go. We'll end with the reboot, recall.
- 53:25You know, it is what it is, this franchise. I get why people love it.
- 53:29Freddy is a character. And like I said, he is fun to watch.
- 53:33But when I look at the source material and then I see New Nightmare,
- 53:37then I see this one, those other ones don't compare. pair.
- 53:39Sorry guys. I just think it's Nightmare on Elm Street's a one and done.
- 53:44I really do. I think it's the first one and the other two are nice,
- 53:48but at the end of the day, it's,
- 53:51Those other two, one's a reboot recall, and so is New Nightmare, technically.
- 53:55So, when you think about it, the only really good one in the whole franchise is the first one.
- 54:00And then these two are more, these two are like side stories, which I really enjoyed.
- 54:05To me, the best of the entire series, for me, are 1, 3, New Nightmare, and this remake.
- 54:13Yeah, I'd get rid of two more, so I'd just put these three, but,
- 54:18you know, it is what it is. At least we're not talking leprechaun.
- 54:23Yet. Give it time. I know. I know.
- 54:28All right, guys, we're going to wrap this one up. We're going to take a little
- 54:31breather from retrospectives.
- 54:32As fun as they are and they're nice revisiting, it could take a toll because a lot of them have two.
- 54:38So we're doing two podcasts in a week rather than just in our staple one.
- 54:44So we're going to take a little breather. We're going to do a couple of films right now.
- 54:48And I've unfortunately Allowed Trevor to pick these Now, first of all I want
- 54:54to apologize to everybody Now I did tell him, I gave him some ground rules A,
- 54:59it can't be Squirtle Cowboy, which is his favorite film.
- 55:03B That's your favorite?
- 55:06B, it has to be something People have heard of,
- 55:10Okay, we're not doing this. Yeah, nothing obscure. No, no, don't say too obscure.
- 55:15Nothing obscure, too obscure.
- 55:18No, we're not doing that. If you give me some fucking voodoo fucking witchy
- 55:23poo movie from the 50s, no.
- 55:26But it has to be films that you guys, I keep emphasizing this because I know
- 55:31he's about to announce them, so I'm hoping he changes something.
- 55:34So it has to be something we've all seen or want to see.
- 55:39Okay? Okay, so with that being said, and I'm peppering one in because I promise
- 55:44you he's going to pick some sick shit.
- 55:47So with that being said, Trevor, oh, dear God, forgive me for saying this.
- 55:53What are the three titles you are going to pick for the month of? Okay, drum roll.
- 56:00Yeah, I've decided to go with some classic British films.
- 56:05The long good friday starring bob hoskins and helen murran also shane meadows
- 56:12dead man shoes from 2004 and of course which we haven't done yet but we should
- 56:18have the original classic the wicker man from 1973,
- 56:24so you go happy easter everybody.
- 56:28So time to press the life out of our listeners fuck me Oh, I can go even more
- 56:36depressing, trust me. No, don't. I don't want to hear that. I don't.
- 56:40Now, we do have more retrospectives coming. We're trying to see what's out there.
- 56:45We're leaning toward the Chuckies. The horror ones seem to be the best,
- 56:48the retrospectives, but we got to dive into something different.
- 56:51Might even look at like separating the bonds, the Roger Moore retrospective. That'd be kind of fun.
- 56:57Something like that. And so we'll probably have to tweak away from horror for a bit.
- 57:01With that being said, And...
- 57:04Thank you, Paul, for the shout-out on Phantasm Gorya's site with regards to
- 57:09wanting us to talk about the TV show.
- 57:11Didn't really dive into as much as we'd like because there's a lot of 44 episodes.
- 57:15There's a lot to, but I hope we did it justice. If you're a fan of it, kudos.
- 57:20If you're a fan of old clown school Freddy, give the episodes a shot.
- 57:27All right, the new issue of Phantasm Gorya is out now.
- 57:30It's the Hellraiser special. It is available on Amazon worldwide and locally
- 57:36at Forbidden Planet and a shop or two in the U S of A.
- 57:41Yep. And so go check it out or get it. I'm in there too.
- 57:46You know, you know, it's, it's, you can, you know, be a little closer to me
- 57:50when you see my written word.
- 57:52Yeah. Wow. That was bad. That's bad.
- 57:56That's really bad. All right. If you guys want to give us a shout,
- 57:59give us your likes dislikes and if you too want to like to hear something like
- 58:04Paul did give us a reach out reach around Mr.
- 58:10Squirtle Cowboy with that being said with that being said,
- 58:16give us a shout on citizenframe underscore podcast I will see any messages you
- 58:21send us and of course on Facebook at citizenframe give us a comment on there
- 58:25as well if you want us to do something a little different or retrospective of you might like to see.
- 58:31Not guaranteed, but we'll certainly give you a shout or a mention in the near
- 58:36future if there's something that you might like. All right.
- 58:39That's all I got. Take care of yourself. We're putting this one to bed.
- 58:42Pardon the pun. Have a good night.
- 58:46Music.
