- 1:09Speaker 1: on audiobook form and also ebook and paper. Well, now
- 1:13Speaker 1: it's time for today's episode of Hoarthstone of the Death Squad,
- 1:17Speaker 1: actually the last circulating episode. The original aired eight January
- 1:22Speaker 1: the tenth of nineteen fifty two and the title The
- 1:26Speaker 1: Terrifying Letter Murder.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Case Hotstone of the Death Squad.
- 1:32Speaker 3: In the Terrifying Letter Murder Case Tonight, we again present
- 1:49Speaker 3: the famous Hotstone of the Death Squad, implacable Manhunter of
- 1:54Speaker 3: the Metropolitan Police in one of his greatest investigations, entitled
- 2:00Speaker 3: Aping Letter Murder Case with Ethel Wilson as Lizzie Eckers
- 2:06Speaker 3: and James Meha as Jonas Caswell and now inspect the
- 2:22Speaker 3: heartstone in the Terrifying Letter Murder Case. The scene opens
- 2:30Speaker 3: in a large office building as a strange looking man
- 2:33Speaker 3: stops before a door marked Jesse Caswell, public stenographer. The
- 2:39Speaker 3: man opens the door and we hear him saying you're
- 2:43Speaker 3: Jesse Caswell.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yes, I'm miss Cashwell. That's something I want you to
- 2:47Speaker 2: type for me.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I'm sorry, but it's after eight and I can't accept
- 2:50Speaker 4: any work tonight.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Listen, miss Caswell, how much do you usually get for
- 2:54Speaker 5: typing out just a few lines?
- 2:57Speaker 4: Fifty cents is my minimum charge.
- 2:59Speaker 5: But I don't see because I put this fifty dollar
- 3:01Speaker 5: bill on your desk and said it's yours man for
- 3:04Speaker 5: doing this little job.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Fifty dollars. Well, that's a different thing. I'll put a
- 3:13Speaker 4: piece of paper in my typewriter. All right, what is
- 3:17Speaker 4: it you want me to tye?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Start it off to whom it may concern.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Go on, but next I've grown tired of life and
- 3:26Speaker 5: I've decided to end it all tonight.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I hope my friends will understand and forgive.
- 3:31Speaker 4: How not type that kind of thing?
- 3:32Speaker 5: I won't do you see this gun lady, you'll type
- 3:35Speaker 5: what I say or else type it.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Don't put that revolver.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Type what I told you. Get gone and quit you
- 3:41Speaker 5: squalking around. Slap you in the mouth. It is I'm
- 3:46Speaker 5: not touching that letter. Put it on the desk. Now,
- 3:49Speaker 5: sign your name to it.
- 3:50Speaker 2: No, no's a pen. Sign it.
- 3:52Speaker 5: You won't get hurt.
- 3:53Speaker 6: What is this? What are you trying to do?
- 4:00Speaker 2: I stay where you are?
- 4:01Speaker 6: They taken away? Oh, thank you Heaven, you come help me?
- 4:06Speaker 2: You? What are you doing here? No? No, don't kill me.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Don't don't.
- 4:14Speaker 6: What you want to kill me too?
- 4:17Speaker 7: Now?
- 4:30Speaker 3: And thirty minutes later, we see Inspector hot Stone of
- 4:32Speaker 3: the death Squad on the murder scene with his assistant,
- 4:35Speaker 3: Detective Sam Cook, as a hysterical scrub woman who found
- 4:39Speaker 3: the two bodies is saying.
- 4:42Speaker 8: No, Inspector Stone, I didn't hear no shots.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I was on another floor cleaning. You say your name
- 4:48Speaker 2: is Lizzie atters.
- 4:49Speaker 8: Yes, sir, I saw the lights on in Miscastle's office,
- 4:52Speaker 8: so high opened the door and I saw I saw
- 4:56Speaker 8: them cute buddies.
- 4:57Speaker 2: It's terrible, sir, makes miss. I understand, Lizzie. I'll go
- 5:02Speaker 2: into the next room for a while. We'll talk to
- 5:04Speaker 2: you later. I'll be writing here tolost the door saying, okay,
- 5:10Speaker 2: way to stop questioning her. So suddenly inspector, because I
- 5:13Speaker 2: think the silent evidence of these two dead bodies is
- 5:16Speaker 2: more important at the moment. Looks like the woman killed
- 5:19Speaker 2: herself after writing a suicide Now see the gun stole
- 5:22Speaker 2: in her hand. The woman didn't kill herself, Sam, she
- 5:25Speaker 2: was murdered. That's a phony suicide note. And that gun
- 5:29Speaker 2: was put in her hand after the killing. I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 2: this bad man killed her. Now, how could a dead
- 5:33Speaker 2: man murder Sam? What happened is that both these people
- 5:36Speaker 2: were murdered by a third person. Question is who. It's
- 5:41Speaker 2: a fantastic situation. I think that scrub wom unless the
- 5:44Speaker 2: actors could have done it. Tell you get it back
- 5:46Speaker 2: in here, Sam. Come on, Lizzie, Yes, are you certain
- 5:52Speaker 2: you didn't hear any shots?
- 5:54Speaker 6: I told you before I didn't inspect her.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Oh I forgot. What I meant was, did you see
- 5:59Speaker 2: anyone leaving this off before you found the boddies? If
- 6:01Speaker 2: I had ever told you? Say, I don't like the
- 6:05Speaker 2: way you're sizing me up if you get.
- 6:07Speaker 8: Any idea about me, or you forget and I call
- 6:09Speaker 8: the cops myself.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Tell me, uh, what do you know about this dead woman? Well?
- 6:13Speaker 8: I know is that her name is Jesse Caswell and
- 6:16Speaker 8: that she was a public stenographer, with all kinds of
- 6:18Speaker 8: people coming in and out of her office, and.
- 6:20Speaker 2: The sign on the door shows us that much.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Well, yes, me.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Didn't you never hear her quarreling with anyone?
- 6:26Speaker 8: I never heard Jesse kas were fighting with no one.
- 6:29Speaker 8: The only thing was yes, she told me some nut
- 6:33Speaker 8: was trying to get money out of her by claiming
- 6:35Speaker 8: she was one of them missing airs to.
- 6:36Speaker 6: A big fortune like you read about the papers.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Inspector Hertstone.
- 6:40Speaker 8: But I've never seen him or heard his name.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Missing air h saying turn that murdered man's body over
- 6:50Speaker 2: he inspecting. Now, Lizzie, look at this murdered man's face. Carefully.
- 6:56Speaker 2: You know him?
- 6:56Speaker 3: No?
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, I don't know him from Adam. It's odd. What
- 7:01Speaker 2: do you get that now? His name is Adam Akers,
- 7:05Speaker 2: a known triggerman, just out from a ten year stretch
- 7:08Speaker 2: in prison, and your name is Lizzie Akers. What's the connection? Quick?
- 7:14Speaker 2: Tell me.
- 7:15Speaker 6: He's my own step son.
- 7:18Speaker 8: But I swear I ain't seen him since before he
- 7:20Speaker 8: went to prison, and I never had nothing.
- 7:22Speaker 6: To do with him before then.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Either. That's another one for the myrains. Inspect their hats n.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I'm along with me, Lizzie, and she may be telling
- 7:28Speaker 2: the truth. Sam, Go and get on with your work, Liz.
- 7:31Speaker 2: He h.
- 7:34Speaker 6: I wouldn't have thought this of any cup inspector. Believe
- 7:37Speaker 6: in her, poor woman like me.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Protecting the poor is the duty of the police, Lizzie.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I get along now, Sam, get headquarters on the phone
- 7:49Speaker 2: while I go through this desk drawer, Police Headquarters. Hello Smith,
- 8:03Speaker 2: Inspector hast now wants to talk to you. Hello Smith.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Phone every radio station at once have them announced that
- 8:10Speaker 2: a pretty blonde woman about thirty five named Jesse Caswell,
- 8:14Speaker 2: public stenographer, believed to be the heiress of long dead
- 8:17Speaker 2: Ezekiel Caswell, Canadian Copperman King, was found murdered in her
- 8:22Speaker 2: office along with Adam Acker's notorious gang killer. Tonight, I
- 8:26Speaker 2: got it down and spier Hostone, what else, askert a
- 8:29Speaker 2: relative or acquaintance of the murdered woman, to communicate immediately
- 8:32Speaker 2: with hot Stone of the death squad. All send a
- 8:35Speaker 2: detail of men to Jess Caswell's apartment to search for
- 8:37Speaker 2: any letters or papers relating to the murder. Owen Smith
- 8:41Speaker 2: doesn't sistone get a complete file together of the murdered
- 8:44Speaker 2: woman's past life. Thank you goodbye. What a been you
- 8:48Speaker 2: got for remembering things, Inspector. You know straight off that
- 8:52Speaker 2: Thame was a Messinarresstrough all the kappermines in the world.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Oh not at all, Sam. I found a carpet of
- 8:57Speaker 2: a letter she wrote to a lawyer in her desk.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Draw a man named Feeling. What are you now, Jesse
- 9:03Speaker 2: foolishly thought the lawyer Fielding was trying to take her
- 9:06Speaker 2: in when you wrote he believed she was the Caswell heiress.
- 9:10Speaker 2: That is, Fielding is a top man in his profession.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I'll look up his address, Inspector. I know his heads
- 9:15Speaker 2: and it's not far from here. Come along. What about
- 9:18Speaker 2: the scrub woman, Leslie? I haven't marked her off my
- 9:20Speaker 2: list yet. Why, Inspector Hearthstone, come in. Nice to see you,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and to see you mister Fielding. Oh what broad Detective
- 9:39Speaker 2: Cook and me Fielding is an amazing murder A pretty
- 9:43Speaker 2: blonde woman named Jesse Caswell. Yes, I just heard a
- 9:46Speaker 2: news flash on the radio. It's a queer character. We
- 9:49Speaker 2: found a common copy of a letter to you in
- 9:51Speaker 2: her desk, you know, Inspector Hotstone. I'm certain that woman
- 9:55Speaker 2: is the heiress of the Ezekiel Caswell fortune. But when
- 9:59Speaker 2: I said one of my names to see her about him,
- 10:01Speaker 2: she practically threw him out of the office. Said, we
- 10:04Speaker 2: were trying to play some sort of phony missing heiress
- 10:07Speaker 2: game to get money out of her, when you were
- 10:08Speaker 2: really trying to put a great fortune in her hands exactly.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Then I wrote her and she accused me of being
- 10:14Speaker 2: a competent swindler. I guess that's the copy of her
- 10:17Speaker 2: letter to me that you found. How positive are you
- 10:19Speaker 2: feeling that Jessic Caswell was the heiress to that big fortune?
- 10:22Speaker 2: Just about ninety nine percent. One of the soundest legal
- 10:26Speaker 2: firms in Canada sent the case to me. Old Ezekiel
- 10:29Speaker 2: Caswell died about twenty five years ago. He was eighty
- 10:32Speaker 2: years old. Then, when in all these years nobody has
- 10:35Speaker 2: turned up to claim the estate, So the time came
- 10:39Speaker 2: to do something. Did the advertise in the American papers
- 10:41Speaker 2: for the missing airs? Yes, but with no results. That's
- 10:44Speaker 2: when they engaged my hope and as I said, we
- 10:47Speaker 2: concluded Jesse was the missing errerors, but she'd have no
- 10:50Speaker 2: part of us. Well, I guess that's all I need now, Feeling.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I wish I could help you more, Inspector. You've supplied
- 10:55Speaker 2: me with a magnificent motive for Jessic Caswell's murder, that is,
- 11:00Speaker 2: if I can find the murderer, and in this case
- 11:03Speaker 2: it's not easy. Well, Sam, let's run along the good night,
- 11:07Speaker 2: feeling good night, if you don't mind my cutting in
- 11:09Speaker 2: mister Fielding not at all, Detective Cook. I'm wondering why
- 11:12Speaker 2: I didn't ask the inspector how Jesse Caswell was murdered. Why.
- 11:17Speaker 2: It may be because mister Fielding is devoid of curiosity, Sam,
- 11:21Speaker 2: good night again, feeling good night. Hope, I didn't put
- 11:24Speaker 2: my foot, Inspector, heartstle, but it's just ain't natural for
- 11:27Speaker 2: a guy not to ask how somebody was bumped off
- 11:29Speaker 2: unless you already knows Heeling is a man of good reputations, Sam,
- 11:33Speaker 2: So there are plenty of others who got the chair. Inspector.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Let's get back to headquarters. Our radio appeal may have
- 11:38Speaker 2: brought results, Inspector, you're on the beam. Yes, had two
- 11:49Speaker 2: parties waiting outside asking for you. Say they got all
- 11:51Speaker 2: the answers about the murdered public stenographer Jesse Kaswell ask
- 11:54Speaker 2: them in Sam, Come on, mister Barnes, I am Angus
- 11:58Speaker 2: Spond's inspect the hostile. Make my wife, Sarah Caswell pond.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Sarah Caswell bonds. The Caswell was her maiden name, Inspector.
- 12:06Speaker 6: We just flew in from Canada, Inspector, and we heard
- 12:08Speaker 6: your radio call by accident at the airport terminal.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You've got the wrong slant from that murdered woman. Jesse
- 12:14Speaker 2: Caswell is not old Ezekiel Caswell's heiress. So what makes
- 12:18Speaker 2: you so sure of that, mister Barnes, Because my wife
- 12:20Speaker 2: Sarah here is the heiress. She is Ezekiel Caswell's granddaughter.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Then why didn't you claim the fortune before this? Because
- 12:27Speaker 2: we didn't know there was one inspector. The first we.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Heard of it was a week ago, Inspector Holstone. A
- 12:32Speaker 6: friend in Canada told us he'd seen an ad in
- 12:34Speaker 6: the newspaper looking for grandfather Ezekiel Theirs.
- 12:37Speaker 3: So we hustled on to New York right away to
- 12:40Speaker 3: find out about it.
- 12:41Speaker 2: The lady, the public snographer who was murdered, was only
- 12:44Speaker 2: the old man's niece, and your wife, being the granddaughter,
- 12:47Speaker 2: would naturally be the real heiress first in lane.
- 12:51Speaker 5: That's it.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Just to make sure of things. I brought my birth
- 12:54Speaker 6: certificate with me. Here it is, Inspector. I was born
- 12:59Speaker 6: in Ottawa, Canada, nineteen twenty one.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Strange the Canadians would come to New York to claim
- 13:04Speaker 2: the fortune of the Canadian born Ezekiel Caswell.
- 13:07Speaker 7: Well.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Oh well, we we thought this place to come. May
- 13:10Speaker 2: I have your birth certificate for a few days, Missus Barnes, Oh, couldn't.
- 13:14Speaker 6: You take a picture of it instead, Inspector, I don't
- 13:17Speaker 6: like to leave it out of my hand. My mother
- 13:19Speaker 6: always kept it in the family bible.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Sam, here's an order, have this birth certificate photographed and
- 13:24Speaker 2: return the original to missus Bards. If that birth certificate
- 13:29Speaker 2: is legitimate, mister Barnes, your wife probably is the heirs
- 13:33Speaker 2: to a great copper fortune since Jess Caswell is dead.
- 13:38Speaker 2: What do you mean by that, Inspector Hostele, I mean
- 13:40Speaker 2: you and your wife have a motive from murder, motly
- 13:43Speaker 2: from me, and I mean too, I have no proof
- 13:45Speaker 2: you to just arrived here from Canada by plane, but
- 13:48Speaker 2: we did, of course we did. We'll have you completely checked.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Mister and missus Barnes. I'll tell you, frankly, your story
- 13:55Speaker 2: doesn't ring true. Missus Bards, give it to me, not
- 13:59Speaker 2: her detectical and please have mister and missus Barnes taking
- 14:02Speaker 2: to the Elton Hotel and made comfortable there. Listen here.
- 14:05Speaker 2: You can't arrest you can't do this. I'm merely detaining you.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Good night, mister missus Brands. I'll have off as a
- 14:10Speaker 2: smitham inspector. Hello, operator, give me Officer Smith, quick, Smith.
- 14:18Speaker 2: You take the Sam Cookie is turning a couple named
- 14:20Speaker 2: Barns over to you. When you get them outside, have
- 14:23Speaker 2: the boys snap a few good pictures of them and
- 14:25Speaker 2: send them to the Chief of Police at Ottawa, Canada.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Barnes are on their way, Inspector, what's the idea of
- 14:33Speaker 2: taking pictures of the birth certificate and houlding Barnes and
- 14:35Speaker 2: his wife. One of the signatures on Sarah Barnes's birth
- 14:38Speaker 2: certificate was written with green ink oh, the same color
- 14:45Speaker 2: Jesse Kaswell was phony suicide note was signed with and
- 14:47Speaker 2: the same color sam that was in the murdered gangster's
- 14:50Speaker 2: fountain pain When he was shot to death beside Jesse Kaswell. Wow,
- 14:54Speaker 2: I guess that's beginning to tie things together nice and
- 14:57Speaker 2: come in telegram, Inspect the Heartstone. Thanks to inspect A
- 15:04Speaker 2: heart Stern of the Death Squad. Regarding radio broadcast for
- 15:08Speaker 2: relatives or friends of murder, Jesse Caswell, I am dead
- 15:11Speaker 2: woman's brother. Arrive your office tomorrow a m signed Jonas
- 15:17Speaker 2: Caswell Brother. Where does it come from? Inspector, Montreal, Canada,
- 15:21Speaker 2: Sam and I have an idea. It will give us
- 15:24Speaker 2: the line that leads to our killer.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Heartstone of the Death Squad, and the terrifying letter. Murder
- 15:44Speaker 3: case continues in just a moment. America is really strong
- 15:50Speaker 3: for CBS Radio's two hour parade of music every Friday
- 15:54Speaker 3: night on most of these same stations. Hits from the
- 15:57Speaker 3: Big Shows, music from Boardeville's Best Day, Tin Panali's Best Numbers,
- 16:02Speaker 3: new and old.
- 16:03Speaker 2: That's what you have waiting for you tomorrow night.
- 16:06Speaker 3: The orchestras of Alfredo Antonini, Ray Block and Paul Weston
- 16:10Speaker 3: play the tunes. Earl Wrightson, Jimmy Carroll and Georgie Price
- 16:15Speaker 3: had three great singing casts.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Robert Q.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Lewis throws open his waxworks all bringing you two solid
- 16:21Speaker 3: hours of pleasure tomorrow night on CBS Radio. Don't miss
- 16:26Speaker 3: a minute. And now back to Hartstone of the Death
- 16:36Speaker 3: Squad and the terrifying letter murder case. Inspector Horthstone's investigation
- 16:45Speaker 3: of the incredible double murder of Jesse Caswell, public stenographer
- 16:50Speaker 3: and Adam Acker's gangster in her office has revealed this
- 16:55Speaker 3: Jesse was apparently heiress to the vast mining fortune left
- 16:58Speaker 3: by her uncle in Canada, but Sarah Barnes and her
- 17:02Speaker 3: husband appear in Hortstone's office declaring Sarah is the heiress, which.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Makes them highly suspect.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Just as Inspector Hothstone ordered the Barnes held, he received
- 17:13Speaker 3: a wire stating that the murdered woman has a brother, Jonas,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and he is coming to see Hopstone. It is now
- 17:21Speaker 3: the following morning, and while awaiting Jonas Caswell's arrival, the
- 17:25Speaker 3: inspector has called on one of the greatest sources of
- 17:27Speaker 3: information known to the police, a stool pigeon. Detective Sam
- 17:32Speaker 3: Cook is ushering one in now.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Saying, as Bozza sparks, Inspector Money, Boso, I suppose to
- 17:39Speaker 2: tactive Cook told you what I wanted to see you about. Yes,
- 17:42Speaker 2: sure about Jess Caswell's Murdie got any ideas, Boso? On
- 17:46Speaker 2: how Adam Acher's the Tigerman got into her office and
- 17:48Speaker 2: was killed beside her. Funny, ain't it? After bumping some
- 17:52Speaker 2: many off himself with so much ahead, Aki cut himself
- 17:55Speaker 2: bumped off well, somebody paid him to put the heat
- 17:58Speaker 2: on Jesse Kaswell, to make her type and sign a
- 18:01Speaker 2: suicide note in her office, and then that person killed
- 18:05Speaker 2: him to eliminate all evidence. And I'm not saying I
- 18:08Speaker 2: know any think personal inspector her stone, But the grapevine
- 18:11Speaker 2: talk is well, get on with it, Boso. Remember the
- 18:15Speaker 2: only reason you're walking the streets free is that you're
- 18:18Speaker 2: useful to us. Okay, okay, Well, as I was saying,
- 18:22Speaker 2: the talk is some guy from Canada for that is
- 18:25Speaker 2: five thousand dollars to bump off the Jesse Casswell Daine
- 18:28Speaker 2: forgetting his price for a trigger job was over you
- 18:30Speaker 2: her good bucks, and Akie naturally took the daya What
- 18:34Speaker 2: was the Canadian man's name? Boso? If it was a
- 18:37Speaker 2: choice between telling you and a chair inspector, I couldn't
- 18:39Speaker 2: answer that. I don't know. Thank you, Boso, that'll be
- 18:42Speaker 2: all I'll I be seeing, Inspector Why it wasn't much, Sam,
- 18:48Speaker 2: but it helps and Hearthstone speaking, all right, send the
- 18:55Speaker 2: man in, Sam. The murdered woman's brother is here, Let
- 19:00Speaker 2: him in. Okay. That's why I'm mister, I'm the detective Cook.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I'd like to see Inspector Horstone please. I'm Inspector Hotstone
- 19:07Speaker 2: and you're Jonas Caswell.
- 19:09Speaker 7: How do you do, Inspector?
- 19:10Speaker 2: How do you do?
- 19:11Speaker 7: You got my wire? Who killed my sister Jesse?
- 19:15Speaker 2: Well, we're not quite ready to make an arrest yet,
- 19:17Speaker 2: mister Caswell, we got a couple of pretty hot suspects.
- 19:19Speaker 7: That's encouraging, Detective Cook.
- 19:21Speaker 2: The thing I can't understand is why anybody would want
- 19:24Speaker 2: to murder Jesse. She was just a public stenographer. Why
- 19:28Speaker 2: would they want to kill her? The enormous is he
- 19:30Speaker 2: killed Caswell fortune? Why else? Jesse was the heiress?
- 19:34Speaker 7: Wasn't he my sister Jesse?
- 19:37Speaker 2: Wasn't heirs to anything? Inspector Hartstone, what's that? Our uncle,
- 19:41Speaker 2: old Ezekiel Caswell died years ago. I always understood he'd
- 19:45Speaker 2: left most of his great copper fortune to a lot
- 19:47Speaker 2: of charities. When did you last see your murdered sister,
- 19:50Speaker 2: mister Caswell. Hmm, matter of ten years, I'd say, back
- 19:53Speaker 2: when she left Canada and came to New York to
- 19:55Speaker 2: open up a public stenographer's office. But take my word
- 19:58Speaker 2: for it, she was no heiress. Inspector, you're her brother
- 20:01Speaker 2: and ought to know. I suppose you want to claim
- 20:04Speaker 2: your sister's buddy. Yes, that's why I really came here.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Would it be asking too much if Detective Cook helped
- 20:11Speaker 2: me make arrangements?
- 20:13Speaker 7: I don't know too much about New York.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Gladly, mister Caswell. Well, before you leave, mister Caswell, you
- 20:18Speaker 2: asked who killed your sister.
- 20:20Speaker 7: I understand you're not sure yet.
- 20:22Speaker 2: We have a man and wife under arrest this minute.
- 20:25Speaker 2: What a mister and missus Angus Barnes. The wife, Sarah
- 20:28Speaker 2: claims she's the granddaughter of Ezekielle Caswell and heirs to
- 20:31Speaker 2: his millions. Angus Barnes and Sarah Barnes. Oh, that's ridiculous.
- 20:37Speaker 2: They are impostors. They have to be. People like that
- 20:39Speaker 2: often turn up, mister Caswell, when the you're of a
- 20:42Speaker 2: missing heiress to a fabulous fortune in is broadcast. They're
- 20:45Speaker 2: dead to have met you. Goodbye, goodbye, Inspector. Detective Cook.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Remember I'll depend on you as you promised. Well, Inspector,
- 20:54Speaker 2: I guess he's got something about Barnes and his wife
- 20:56Speaker 2: being impostors out of a police just reporter. That their
- 20:59Speaker 2: whole story, including I press it that thicket looks strictly funny.
- 21:02Speaker 2: So far, sam Our next movie is to get back
- 21:04Speaker 2: to our first suspect in this case. You mean that
- 21:06Speaker 2: scrub woman, Lizzie Akers, stepmother the gangster was killed along
- 21:09Speaker 2: with Jesse Caswall. This report from Officer Smith reveals definitely,
- 21:13Speaker 2: but far from not seeing her gangster steps on Adam
- 21:16Speaker 2: Ackers for years, he was actually seen walking up to
- 21:19Speaker 2: that same office building with Lizzie every night. We hop
- 21:23Speaker 2: into the car and go and talk to Lizzie. Now,
- 21:32Speaker 2: don't tell me again you went lying Lizzie.
- 21:34Speaker 8: Well, I suppose my step son, Adam Akers was walking
- 21:36Speaker 8: into the office building with me.
- 21:38Speaker 2: What difference does that make? Inspector? You are going to
- 21:41Speaker 2: tell me the truth or be jailed this minute. If
- 21:46Speaker 2: I didn't tell you everything, it was because I was scared.
- 21:49Speaker 8: What do you want to know, Inspector Horstone.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I want a description of the man or woman who
- 21:54Speaker 2: paid your steps on five thousand dollars to force the
- 21:57Speaker 2: murder Jesse Caswell to type a suicide note just before
- 22:00Speaker 2: she was killed. And you are going to tell me,
- 22:04Speaker 2: all right, Inspector, I'll tell you now.
- 22:18Speaker 3: With all his evidence assembled, Inspector Howthstone is ready to
- 22:21Speaker 3: close in on the murderer of Jesse Caswell, a pretty
- 22:24Speaker 3: blonde public stenographer and missing heiress and the triggerman, Adam Ackers.
- 22:30Speaker 3: The scene is police headquarters and we hear Inspector Hothstone
- 22:33Speaker 3: saying to Detective Sam Cook.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Yes, Sam, watch this write Inspector, take this folder. It
- 22:40Speaker 2: contains the death chair evidence we wanted, Yes, sir, and
- 22:43Speaker 2: hand me each piece instantly. I asked you for it.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Got you. You've got all these people outside, every suspect, inspector,
- 22:49Speaker 2: each one in a separate room. Good bring in Angus
- 22:52Speaker 2: Barnes and his wife, Sarah Lester Lessus Barnes, come in.
- 22:56Speaker 2: What do you want with us, Inspector Howstone. Yes, what
- 22:59Speaker 2: you soon find out. Our first police report from Ottawa,
- 23:03Speaker 2: Canada implied you were both impostors. Then we sent your pictures.
- 23:08Speaker 2: There are pictures Sam bringing mister Jonas Caswell. Jonas Caswell, Commander,
- 23:15Speaker 2: what's that Jonas Caswell, Well, whoever said.
- 23:18Speaker 6: We were impostor's life?
- 23:21Speaker 2: Here's Jonas Caswell, Inspector. You Angus and Sarah here, but
- 23:26Speaker 2: you were dead. You thought they were dead, Jonas. That's
- 23:29Speaker 2: why I told you anybody claiming to be Angus and
- 23:32Speaker 2: Sarah Barnes were impostors.
- 23:33Speaker 7: Inspector.
- 23:34Speaker 2: They were supposed to be lost at sea and good riddance.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Then you think, Jonas, that they killed your sister, Jesse Caswell.
- 23:41Speaker 7: You're a better judge of that than I, Inspector.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Why you you quiet, Angus? Now, Jonas, Why do you
- 23:47Speaker 2: say the death of these two people, Angus and Sarah
- 23:50Speaker 2: Barnes would have been a good riddance? Look up their
- 23:53Speaker 2: record in Canada, Inspector, one dirty business after another, terrible reputation.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Whyet Missus bonds now, Sam, Inspector, give me the second
- 24:03Speaker 2: police report from Ottawa on Angus and Sarah bands. Hey, yes, sir,
- 24:09Speaker 2: it shows both you Angus and you Sarah to be
- 24:11Speaker 2: people of uncertain character and the Captain Ottawa a life
- 24:15Speaker 2: show the lawyers. Give me that reporter the last time.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I'll tell you and your wife to shut up once.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Now give me that letter found in the murdered woman's flat.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Thanks Sam, that's the letter Jonas Caswell's and his sister right,
- 24:26Speaker 2: Inspector Jonas. This letter advises your sister Jesse that a
- 24:32Speaker 2: man named Feeling, a lawyer who approached her about being
- 24:35Speaker 2: the heiress of Ezekiel Caswell's fortune, was trying to take
- 24:38Speaker 2: advantage of her. In short, to stay clear of him.
- 24:42Speaker 2: That's correct, Fielding was trying to swindle her. My sister,
- 24:45Speaker 2: Jesse was only a public stenographer.
- 24:47Speaker 7: She wasn't any too smart.
- 24:48Speaker 2: A proper protection for the brother to give his sister Jonas.
- 24:52Speaker 2: But now Sam, bring in the office scrubwoman Lizzie Ackers
- 24:56Speaker 2: who she inspected one moment. Please Jonas, Now, Inspector Lizzy,
- 25:02Speaker 2: there are two men in this room, look at them carefully.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I am was this man Angus Barnes, the one who
- 25:09Speaker 2: paid your triggerman's stepson five thousand dollars to force a
- 25:12Speaker 2: suicide note from the public stenographer Jesse Caswell before she
- 25:16Speaker 2: was murdered.
- 25:17Speaker 6: No inspector told you that before. It's this guy over here.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Ah. I wanted to be sure, Lizzie Well, Jonas.
- 25:26Speaker 7: Now what heartstone?
- 25:28Speaker 2: You're more clever than I gave you credit for. As that.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Jonas Caswell, don't be dramatic, Detective Cook.
- 25:35Speaker 7: I know the game is up.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yes, I killed my sister Jesse, took a plane from Montreal,
- 25:40Speaker 2: did the job, flew back, and then whired you Hotstone
- 25:43Speaker 2: coming inspected. This guy's the coolest murder we ever took in.
- 25:47Speaker 2: When a fifty million dollar fortune is at stake, you've
- 25:50Speaker 2: got to be cool. The electric chair isn't, Jonas Caswell.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I arrest you for the murder of your sister, Jesse Caswell,
- 25:58Speaker 2: and I'll give you credit for supply saying me with
- 26:00Speaker 2: one of the nastiest murders in my career. Take him,
- 26:03Speaker 2: Sam and charge him. Who gets a fifty million bucks?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Inspector Old issake your Kaswell's fortune. That's not our affair, Sam,
- 26:10Speaker 2: But poor Jesse Caswell was never the missing heiress. She
- 26:14Speaker 2: was murdered because her brother mistakenly thought she was right. Again,
- 26:17Speaker 2: I stole my mistake. I wanted to get the fortune
- 26:22Speaker 2: instead of letting my sister get it. I as nephew,
- 26:24Speaker 2: was next in line. I didn't know Sarah Barnes, the
- 26:28Speaker 2: old man's granddaughter here, was still alive hat so she
- 26:33Speaker 2: gets the money would have gotten it whether.
- 26:35Speaker 7: I killed Jesse or not.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yes, it looks like Sarah Caswell Barns gets the fortune,
- 26:40Speaker 2: whether she deserves it or not, and you Jonas get
- 26:44Speaker 2: the electric chair. And thus Heartstone of the Death Squad
- 27:04Speaker 2: writes solved in the files of the Terrifying Letter Murder Case.
- 27:11Speaker 2: The part of Inspector Hotstone was played by Alfred Shirley,
- 27:15Speaker 2: written by Frank Hommert, directed by Henry Howard and as
- 27:19Speaker 2: a presentation of CBS Radio, here is a special announcement
- 27:25Speaker 2: beginning of this coming Sunday. Heartstone of the Death Squad
- 27:29Speaker 2: will be heard every Sunday at five thirty pm Eastern
- 27:33Speaker 2: Standard Time. Listen this Sunday for Hotstone of the Death
- 27:38Speaker 2: Squad in the Fabulous Engagement Ring Murder.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well a very competently run investigation by Heartstone,
- 28:13Speaker 1: as it does a good job taking command of the
- 28:15Speaker 1: situation and though of course we do get a downbeat ending.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And this is our very last episode that we have
- 28:22Speaker 1: of Heartstone. We only had three weeks worth, but we
- 28:27Speaker 1: do have some listener comments and feedback regarding the first
- 28:32Speaker 1: episode we played the Unheated Warning Murder Case and tim
- 28:38Speaker 1: comments in the opening when the villainous was still playing
- 28:41Speaker 1: the engine. She dismissed the warning as a ten twenty
- 28:46Speaker 1: thirty melodrama. I wondered as I drove what those were
- 28:50Speaker 1: the length of the acts, directors, producers, cuts of the
- 28:56Speaker 1: of the box office googled when I got to the
- 29:02Speaker 1: office and found that it was the price of admission. Well,
- 29:07Speaker 1: thanks so much for sharing. And it's interesting how sometimes
- 29:11Speaker 1: old radio programs will prompt you to research something unfamiliar
- 29:16Speaker 1: that you hadn't heard before in our modern times. So
- 29:20Speaker 1: thanks so much for sharing a very interesting link. The
- 29:23Speaker 1: answer actually found at murrayanpress dot com. Well, Kim had
- 29:28Speaker 1: a different or Christine had a different take. She writes, Sorry, Adam,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but I think this may qualify as the lamest radio
- 29:37Speaker 1: detective show in history. I'm open to correction. Well, Christine,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I would say that the lamest, the absolute worst radio
- 29:50Speaker 1: detective show is Danger Doctor Danfield. It is a show
- 29:56Speaker 1: with the most annoying protagonist ever, with a very annoying sidekick,
- 30:02Speaker 1: horrible dialogue, stupid mysteries, and the most irritating thing about
- 30:07Speaker 1: it is every single episode of it survives all the
- 30:12Speaker 1: lost episodes of Philip Marlowe let George do it, Jeff Reagan, Dragnet,
- 30:20Speaker 1: the Thin Man, The Fat Man, Very Craig, Confidential Investigator.
- 30:25Speaker 1: And this series survives completely intact. And if you listen
- 30:31Speaker 1: to an episode of Danger Doctor Danfield, it will change
- 30:35Speaker 1: your perspective on life because you will think, no matter
- 30:38Speaker 1: what you go through, at least I'm not listening to Danger,
- 30:41Speaker 1: Doctor Danfield. That would make everything so much worse. So
- 30:46Speaker 1: in my mind, that is the worst detective series of
- 30:50Speaker 1: all time. I have to admit that I find the
- 30:53Speaker 1: hummerd mystery series to not be bad at all. Usually
- 30:58Speaker 1: there's some pretty interesting plots. I don't think Hertstone of
- 31:03Speaker 1: the Death Squad was quite as good as a Mister
- 31:07Speaker 1: Chameleon in that regards, and there's some I find some
- 31:12Speaker 1: of it just amusing overall, and it's worth noting these
- 31:15Speaker 1: shows were incredibly popular. The Hummertz created Mister Kean, a
- 31:22Speaker 1: Tracer of Lost Persons, which was a series that aired
- 31:25Speaker 1: longer than any other radio detective, and even Horstone of
- 31:30Speaker 1: the Death Squad, which ended after three and a half
- 31:33Speaker 1: years we only have three episodes of it. Lasted longer
- 31:37Speaker 1: than Philip Marlow, Not Beat or Nero Wolf. These shows
- 31:42Speaker 1: were very popular, particularly with female listeners in this era,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but I appreciate not everyone is going to enjoy every
- 31:52Speaker 1: show that we do on here, which is why it
- 31:55Speaker 1: helps having six shows a week and allows fans you
- 31:58Speaker 1: don't like a particular show just to skip a day
- 32:01Speaker 1: and wait for something far more interesting to them to
- 32:04Speaker 1: show up. Well, I hope that listeners will be interested.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Next week we'll be bringing you The Crime Files of Lamond,
- 32:12Speaker 1: a very unusual series, and tomorrow join us for the
- 32:16Speaker 1: Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime, send your comments
- 32:20Speaker 1: to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow on
- 32:25Speaker 1: us on Twitter at Radio Detectives, and become one of
- 32:28Speaker 1: our friends on Facebook, Facebook, dot com, slash Radiodetectives. From Boise, Idaho,
- 32:34Speaker 1: this is your host, Adam Grahamson and off
