- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:30coop. So today we are talking about
- 0:32rewiring your days. And this is a subject that's
- 0:37very fascinating to me because most people show up for coaching
- 0:40and they think, Oh my gosh, I don't know how I'm going to do
- 0:44this. I don't know how I'm going to
- 0:47change. I don't know the particulars of
- 0:49any of this. And they get overwhelmed before
- 0:51they even start. And one of the simplest things
- 0:54that I I really have to have everybody understand right at
- 0:59the from the very beginning of working with me and coaching
- 1:01with me is that you are a creature of habit.
- 1:05You are a creature of patterns and it is possible to change.
- 1:09Like you have to believe it's possible to change.
- 1:12And by changing your patterns, even the simplest of patterns,
- 1:15things start to evolve. So there are estimates out there
- 1:19that we have between 60 and 80,000 thoughts a day.
- 1:22I mean, think about that. That's insane that that a person
- 1:25can have that many thoughts. First of all, it always
- 1:27fascinates me as to how they track this.
- 1:29But they do. And 60 to 80,000 thoughts a day.
- 1:34The kicker is 2/3 of them are repeated from the day before.
- 1:38Now that's even more insane when you think about the how the
- 1:41human brain works and when you repeat things, they become part
- 1:46of who you are. So most of us learned
- 1:48multiplication that way, where we were just drilled, wrote,
- 1:51learned it over and over and over and over until we could
- 1:53recite it and do it quickly so that we knew those basic
- 1:57fundamentals, which is the the crux of how your brain likes to
- 2:02work. Repetition is the mother of
- 2:04skill for human beings. And once we do it, we can do it
- 2:08better and better and better and better.
- 2:10But the really hard thing to understand is if the patterns
- 2:13are not resourceful, you are repeating them anyway.
- 2:18You are becoming more resourceful at the unresourceful
- 2:22activity. So think about what I just said.
- 2:25If it's a destructive activity and you do it more and more and
- 2:28you become better at the destructive activity, you're
- 2:30still going to. It's going to be a pattern.
- 2:32It's still going to affect you. You can't just get away from it
- 2:35because it's destructive, you know.
- 2:37And we have patterns in everything we do.
- 2:39Think about how you take a shower.
- 2:41You go and get in the shower in the morning or the evening
- 2:43whenever you do your showering and boom, all of a sudden you
- 2:47wash the same way. You have the same pattern of how
- 2:50you wash yourself, how you do your hair.
- 2:52Same thing about how you blow dry your hair or how you shave,
- 2:56brush your teeth. You always start in the same
- 2:58spot. For most people, it is very
- 3:00driven. The side of the bed they sleep
- 3:02on how they put their clothes on.
- 3:04Try to put your sneakers and socks on differently and watch
- 3:07how your brain goes. Wait, what?
- 3:09Because it's so conditioned. So the point of this is rewiring
- 3:15your brain is very simple in the sense that you change the
- 3:19pattern of how you do something and then everything else gets
- 3:23scrambled. So let's say you want to start
- 3:25your day off and you want to start meditating, and you've
- 3:27always said I want to meditate. I know it's good for me, I hear
- 3:30how great it is, but I just can't seem to get it.
- 3:33I I struggle with it. Part of the problem is you're
- 3:36trying to insert something new into old patterns.
- 3:40So I will often tell my clients the best way to do that is to
- 3:44start scrambling your patterns. Now for any Seinfeld fans out
- 3:48there, if you're a big Seinfeld fan, and I'm a big Seinfeld fan,
- 3:52there was an episode where George was talking about
- 3:54opposite George, and he was going to do the opposite of
- 3:57everything that George ever talked about.
- 3:59And it was so great because he was scrambling his own patterns
- 4:01right down to if he ordered tuna salad, now he was going to order
- 4:05egg salad, he was going to order coffee.
- 4:07He would normally now always order coffee.
- 4:09He would now order tea. He's scrambling the simplest of
- 4:13patterns and then the others become open to interpretation
- 4:17and you can allow new things to happen.
- 4:20It's kind of like you're tricking your brain.
- 4:22You're just saying, if I always walk to my left and now I walk
- 4:25to my right and while I'm walking to my right I think of
- 4:28something else I want to do, it becomes easier.
- 4:31So right from the morning, let's say we're going to add in the
- 4:34meditation. You wake up in the morning
- 4:36instead of going in and, you know, doing your day like you
- 4:41normally would, grabbing your phone, checking your text
- 4:43messages, your emails or whatever you say, no, I'm not
- 4:46going to do that. You get up, you drink water and
- 4:49you go and you meditate first. Right away you've scrambled your
- 4:52brain because you're not looking at the old pattern and doing the
- 4:56phone or whatever. Now, obviously you probably have
- 4:59to pee in there first. You get up.
- 5:00I know, I'm just saying that don't touch the typical
- 5:04patterns. It's OK, though, to get up and
- 5:05pee first if you need to, or get up and brush your teeth and pee.
- 5:08Fine. But talk about it in the sense
- 5:11of the big stuff that you're going to move around so that
- 5:14your brain does not have the same response.
- 5:17I promise you, if you try this technique, you're going to be
- 5:19astounded as to how different you feel right away.
- 5:22Because it really doesn't matter if you're going for a walk or
- 5:25you're meditating, or you decide to read or you decide to change
- 5:29the smallest of small things, the one shift in the morning
- 5:31makes all the difference. So work on this and practice it,
- 5:36scramble as much as you can and then try putting the new things
- 5:41in. Because I promise you when you
- 5:43do it, it will interrupt those old patterns and then you have
- 5:47the opportunity to put in the new ones you want.
- 5:50I hope you all have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
