- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swedish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 110! We've come a long way. Lucas: We sure have. Today we're heading somewhere I think you'll love — a bookstore. Luna: Oh, I love bookstores. The smell of books, the quiet... but I never know how to ask for things in Swedish. Lucas: That's exactly what we're fixing today. Let's start with the most useful phrase: 'Jag letar efter en bok.' Luna: Jag letar efter en bok. That means 'I'm looking for a book,' right? Lucas: Exactly. Letar efter — looking for. En bok — a book. Say it again. Luna: Jag letar efter en bok. Lucas: Perfect. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Swedish, you can support the show and keep it ad-free at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every little bit helps us keep making episodes. Luna: Yeah, it really does. And we appreciate everyone who's supported us. Now, back to the bookstore! So if I'm looking for a specific book, I say 'Jag letar efter en bok.' But what if I want a recommendation? Lucas: Good question. You can ask 'Har ni någon rekommendation?' Luna: Har ni någon rekommendation? That's 'Do you have any recommendation?' Lucas: Right. Har ni — do you have. Någon — any. Rekommendation — recommendation. Try it. Luna: Har ni någon rekommendation? Lucas: Great. Now imagine you're buying a gift. You could say 'Jag är ute efter en present.' Luna: Jag är ute efter en present. 'I'm looking for a gift' — literally 'I'm out after a gift.' That's cute. Lucas: It is! Är ute efter means 'looking for' in a more casual way. Repeat after me: Jag är ute efter en present. Luna: Jag är ute efter en present. Lucas: Excellent. Now, if you need to know where something is, ask 'Vilken avdelning är det?' Luna: Vilken avdelning är det? 'Which department is that?' Lucas: Yes. Avdelning means department or section. Try it. Luna: Vilken avdelning är det? Lucas: Nailed it. And finally, if they don't have the book, you can ask 'Kan jag beställa den?' Luna: Kan jag beställa den? 'Can I order it?' Lucas: Exactly. Beställa — to order. Den — it. Say it with me: Kan jag beställa den? Luna: Kan jag beställa den? Lucas: Perfect. Let's do a quick role play. I'll be the bookseller. You come up and say you're looking for a book. Luna: Hej! Jag letar efter en bok. Lucas: Hej! Vilken typ av bok? Luna: Hmm, jag är ute efter en present. Har ni någon rekommendation? Lucas: Ja, självklart! Vilken avdelning är det? Kanske skönlitteratur? Luna: Ah, skönlitteratur — fiction. Yes, that sounds good. Lucas: Good recovery! Now, if the book you want isn't there, you'd ask 'Kan jag beställa den?' Luna: Kan jag beställa den? Perfect. I feel so much more confident now. Lucas: You should. Let's run through all five phrases one more time. Luna: Jag letar efter en bok. Har ni någon rekommendation? Jag är ute efter en present. Vilken avdelning är det? Kan jag beställa den? Lucas: Beautiful. You're ready for any Swedish bookstore. Luna: Tack så mycket, Lucas. See you all next time! Lucas: Hej då! Practice these until we chat again.
