- 0:26This is Ella Jeffries reporting live at the
- 0:28Becker's Healthcare twenty twenty six annual meeting. I'm
- 0:31I'm here with Peter Banco, president and CEO
- 0:33of Baystate Health.
- 0:35Peter, thank you so much for joining us
- 0:36today. Thank you for having me. Great. Could
- 0:38you briefly introduce yourself, your role, and the
- 0:40scope of your organization, and what's currently commanding
- 0:43most of your intention as a leader?
- 0:45Peter Banco, president and CEO of Baystate Health.
- 0:48We're
- 0:49the community safety net academic medical center in
- 0:53Western Massachusetts. If we don't do it, nobody
- 0:55does. So large physician group, over 1,300
- 0:58academic community doctors
- 1:00for hospitals, including a children's hospital inside our
- 1:03big academic medical center, and we we have
- 1:05our own health plan.
- 1:07Great. Thank you.
- 1:08Now in a year marked by very rapid
- 1:10change, what recent decision or pivot required the
- 1:13most leadership conviction from yourself,
- 1:15particularly when it came to aligning people, resources,
- 1:18or capabilities?
- 1:19Yeah. We we've been struggling like most organizations
- 1:22in the IT realm. And, in the fall,
- 1:26I my mind was down one path, and,
- 1:29two execs and five docs went to meet
- 1:31with an IT partner, and it tore
- 1:34in the course of a day, the physicians
- 1:37and our one of our chief nursing leaders
- 1:39totally changed my mind about direction. Right? And
- 1:42so we're
- 1:43we're doubling down on,
- 1:46AI. Our semantic layer is being put in
- 1:48now, and so we view AI as a
- 1:51a big opportunity. And I would tell you
- 1:53six to nine months, I was not thinking
- 1:55down that path from a technology end, but
- 1:57we're really
- 1:59gonna implement,
- 2:00new technology
- 2:01tools and AI across our entire platform from
- 2:04clinical all the way to finance and supply
- 2:06chain and HR.
- 2:08Great. Wow. That's awesome.
- 2:10And how did that moment challenge your assumptions,
- 2:12and what did it change about how you
- 2:14approach decision making, talent, or organizational readiness today?
- 2:18Yeah. I was so
- 2:20I thought we were so far behind on
- 2:21the IT piece, and
- 2:24the physicians grabbed onto it immediately. And that
- 2:27so I was a little skeptical, and I
- 2:29kept questioning them. And,
- 2:31they convinced me that this was the past
- 2:33path to go and and leapfrog,
- 2:35but it you're right. It does change The
- 2:37path we're headed down changes
- 2:40everything about us.
- 2:42And I found the physicians and clinical leaders
- 2:44were more receptive than the kind of the
- 2:46business leaders, which convinced me where we're right
- 2:49down the right path. But it's gonna it's
- 2:51gonna change our workforce.
- 2:53It's gonna change how we do work. It's
- 2:55gonna change how we make decisions.
- 2:58And and we're and we're ready for that
- 3:01path, but it's gonna take a lot of
- 3:02change in transition management to get there. Mhmm.
- 3:05Definitely. And I'm sure you're not alone in
- 3:07that along with other health systems.
- 3:09Now when you think about the forces reshaping
- 3:11health care right now, where do you believe
- 3:13leaders need to be more decisive,
- 3:15especially when balancing speed, risk, and having the
- 3:18right teams in the right place? Yeah. We're
- 3:20I think we're in a leadership crisis across
- 3:23all industries, but especially health care. You know,
- 3:26Gallup survey a couple years ago, one in
- 3:28five
- 3:29American workers describe their work environment as miserable.
- 3:33That's the word, and that's a really strong
- 3:35word to describe your work.
- 3:37And I saw a recent Becker's published a
- 3:39b e Smith survey where two thirds of
- 3:41execs
- 3:42were gonna be looking for a job and
- 3:44one third in the next twelve months. So,
- 3:48people are looking for
- 3:50strong leadership,
- 3:52strong teams,
- 3:53and,
- 3:55and recognition and support. So,
- 3:59we've
- 4:00where we need to be more decisive is
- 4:02with our workforce. Right? Supporting teams,
- 4:05nurturing and developing teams, spending time with them,
- 4:08communicating,
- 4:09helping them with change.
- 4:11And, when when things aren't necessarily working, being
- 4:14able to,
- 4:16have the sense of accountability and action to
- 4:19make a change in in people.
- 4:21Definitely.
- 4:22And as sir as uncertainty
- 4:24has become the norm, what leadership habit or
- 4:26mindset has been most critical in keeping your
- 4:28organization and your people moving forward?
- 4:31Yeah. About a year and a half ago,
- 4:32we said, well, what's our view of the
- 4:34world? So we we asked a lot of
- 4:36people, board, community, others, and we developed five
- 4:40things that we thought were pretty certain about
- 4:42the future to hold on to. Mhmm. And
- 4:44and that's been a good guidepost for us.
- 4:47So,
- 4:48you know, we talked about competition and care
- 4:50models, and, we're we're 70%
- 4:52plus government payer mix. So how's that gonna
- 4:55change our world? How do we care for
- 4:57the Medicare, Medicaid population? And those are all
- 4:59fairly certain things that we can all grab
- 5:02onto onto. So it's helped our board
- 5:04say with all the changes and uncertainty at
- 5:06the federal government,
- 5:09most notably. It's just helped our board and
- 5:11leadership and physicians and our team members grab
- 5:13on to something. So we we know here's
- 5:15our here's the five things we think are
- 5:17gonna happen. And and if we just charge
- 5:19towards those directions, we'll be fine. Mhmm. For
- 5:22sure.
- 5:23And, you know, speaking of the future, looking
- 5:25five years ahead, how do you expect global
- 5:27labor dynamics to shape the health care workforce,
- 5:29and what strategic shifts are you making now
- 5:31and to say ahead of that change?
- 5:34I mean, AI is the biggest one. So
- 5:36a lot of those positions in law and
- 5:38finance or answering phones or,
- 5:41people
- 5:42programming are are gonna change.
- 5:45So, you know, we're working we have a
- 5:47lot of low colleges and universities in our
- 5:49area. So we're working with them to to
- 5:51create programs that don't exist anymore. So AI
- 5:55or,
- 5:56certain software based certifications
- 5:59so that we can retool our workforce, but
- 6:01then,
- 6:03ensure we have a workforce of the future.
- 6:04Because there's so many colleges,
- 6:07we're we're growing our own. So we're expanding
- 6:09our med school class. We're expanding our residency
- 6:12programs,
- 6:13expanding partnerships with UMass Amherst and other local
- 6:17universities
- 6:18just to train the right people that we
- 6:20need because we don't think unless we grow
- 6:21our own, we don't think there's gonna be
- 6:23the workforce to do what we need to
- 6:24do. Mhmm. Yeah. No. That's really great important
- 6:27initiative. So glad to hear that. Well, thank
- 6:29you so much, Peter, for joining me today.
- 6:31It was great to have you on the
- 6:32podcast, and enjoy the rest of your annual
- 6:34meeting. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah.
