- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for September 11th.
- 0:13Today is Are You OK Day, an awareness day focused on mental
- 0:18health and checking in on others, helping others.
- 0:22Today is also National Make Your Bed day, celebrating the simple
- 0:26act of tidying up and starting your day with accomplishment.
- 0:29And if Doctor Jordan Peterson is correct, that making your
- 0:33goddamn bed is good for your mental health.
- 0:36But today is also Patriot Day, the day of remembrance and
- 0:40reflection as we honor the nearly 3000 lives lost in the
- 0:44terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.
- 0:49This day holds profound meaning for Americans and people around
- 0:53the world who witnessed how tragedy can bring out both the
- 0:56worst and the very best in humanity. 24 years later, we
- 1:01remember not just the devastating loss, but also the
- 1:05extraordinary courage, compassion, and unity that
- 1:08emerged in the aftermath. We remember the first responders
- 1:12who ran toward danger, the ordinary citizens who became
- 1:16heroes to communities that open their hearts to strangers, and
- 1:20the resilience of the nation that shows hope over fear.
- 1:25Patriot Day reminds us that while we cannot always control
- 1:28what happens to us, we can control how we respond with
- 1:33dignity, with kindness, and with an unwavering commitment to the
- 1:37values that unite us. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:42from Fred Rogers, the beloved television host and advocate for
- 1:46children who once said, When I was a boy and I would see scary
- 1:51things in the news, my mother would say to me, look for the
- 1:56helpers. You will always find people who
- 1:59are helping. Mr. Rogers wisdom shared by his
- 2:04mother many years before September 11th, became a source
- 2:07of comfort for countless people in the days and weeks following
- 2:11the attacks. In the midst of unimaginable
- 2:15tragedy, his words reminded us to focus not on the darkness,
- 2:20but on the light that emerged when people chose to help.
- 2:23And there were so many helpers on that day and in the days that
- 2:26followed. Firefighters, police officers
- 2:29and paramedics who risked everything to save others.
- 2:33Ordinary people who lined up to donate blood, volunteer at
- 2:37hospitals and provide comfort to those who had lost everything.
- 2:42Communities across the country open their doors and their
- 2:45hearts stranded travelers and grieving families.
- 2:49The helpers weren't just the professionals that are trained
- 2:51for such things. They were teachers who comforted
- 2:55Brighton children, neighbors who checked on elderly residents,
- 2:59volunteers who worked around the clock at relief centers, and
- 3:03millions who chose compassion over anger, service over
- 3:09self-interest. Mr. Rogers understood something
- 3:13profound about human nature. In our darkest moments, we have
- 3:17a choice. We can focus on what's wrong
- 3:20with the world, or we can focus on what's right with people.
- 3:25We can let fear paralyze us, or we can let love motivate us into
- 3:32action. Even today, 24 years later, the
- 3:36Helpers continue every person who chooses service over
- 3:40self-interest, who extends kindness to a stranger, who
- 3:45stands up for what's right, They're part of the same spirit
- 3:48that emerged from the ashes of September 11th.
- 3:52The legacy of September 11th isn't just about remembering
- 3:56what we lost. It's about remembering who we
- 3:59can be when we choose to help each other.
- 4:03It's about honoring those we lost by becoming the Helpers
- 4:06ourselves, in big ways and small ways, every day.
- 4:13So today, as we observe Patriot Day, let's carry forward the
- 4:18wisdom of Fred Rogers and his mother.
- 4:21When we encounter difficulty, tragedy, or fear, whether in our
- 4:26own lives or in the world around us, let's look for the helpers.
- 4:32And more importantly, let's choose to be among them and
- 4:36remember to check in with your family, friends and coworkers as
- 4:40are you. OK Day is a great day to be a
- 4:44helper. And go ahead and make your damn
- 4:47bed while you're in the helping mood today And every day, we can
- 4:51choose to be the helpers the world needs.
- 4:55That's going to do it For today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:58for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:04Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
