- 0:00Speaker 1: Our next guest is native Texan. Maybe he might.
- 0:03Speaker 2: He's Greg Tepper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He's a former Coppel Cowboy.
- 0:08Speaker 2: He's pretty dark gone, proud of his state rank Cockpel
- 0:11Cowboys who joins his name? Would you would you even
- 0:13consider voting for Willie Nelson for president?
- 0:16Speaker 1: I absolutely would. And I'll tell you why.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I actually, and you guys are talking, you were wondering
- 0:22what song or what album George on my mind was
- 0:25off of?
- 0:26Speaker 1: It is off of Stardust.
- 0:27Speaker 3: I know that because my father is a huge Willie
- 0:32Nelson fan. He's originally he's a Chicago and he's a
- 0:35Southsider one hundred and sixty first in Pulaski. And but
- 0:39when he moved to Texas. I haven't asked him this directly,
- 0:43but I think he was like, I got to get
- 0:45some Texas bona fides, like I can't be a Yankee
- 0:48down here, and so he and so Willie Nelson was
- 0:51like his entree into like country music. So Willie Nelson
- 0:55is very much like the soundtrack of My Youth, among
- 0:58many other things, a lot of hot rock, a lot
- 1:00of a lot of the classic rock, and stuff like that.
- 1:03But Willie Nelson is certainly in the playlist.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Lynna and I drag you kicking and screaming
- 1:08into the yacht rock sphere.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We did. We did that, that's for sure.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Although you wouldn't join us at Ambrosia a couple of
- 1:14weeks ago. I'm not sure where that was going on now. Strangely,
- 1:17I was a little busy. Yeah, yeah, just a little bit.
- 1:20Hey before we get to the high school thing, and
- 1:23I've got some really intriguing things to ask you with
- 1:25regard to the high school world.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I don't know. Did you hear more.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Input from people who might not otherwise have a lot
- 1:39of input or a lot to say about Texas ou before, during,
- 1:44and after the game because of the following programs not
- 1:48in action Baylor, TCU, Texas A, and m Texas Tech.
- 1:53With those programs not in action, you think that might
- 1:56add something to do it people people around the state
- 1:58of Texas weighing in on all of that.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it took center stage, especially considering like
- 2:03the second most interesting game on that Saturday was UTSA
- 2:06and Rice, which, by the way, turned out to be
- 2:09a fabulous game with Rice. You know, certainly certainly getting
- 2:14a bit of a perhaps a stay of execution for
- 2:16the for the coaching staff there as they come back
- 2:18and beatsa.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You know the other thing it did.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Tip the other thing it did, it made bad beats
- 2:24last night on Scott Van Sports Center because because of
- 2:28the late touchdown that the Utsa Rice game made bad beats.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Actually probably the over under I've got the overhit on
- 2:36that last Rice.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They said that too, But also I think Utsa was
- 2:40like a three point favorite before the Rice last touchdown
- 2:43something like that.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a terrific win for Rice, but it did
- 2:46kind of clear the way for Texas and OU. And
- 2:50I think that that as a result, especially considering you know,
- 2:54the buzz around this game, and I know folks down
- 2:57there understand this that there are some years in which
- 3:00Texas OU is the game and there's also some years
- 3:04where it is a game, and this was definitely one
- 3:08of those years where it was the game, especially considering
- 3:10Texas being number one in the nation. Oklahoma I think struggling.
- 3:16I think people kind of still wondering exactly what Oklahoma is,
- 3:19and even when you add in the idea of it
- 3:22being the first ever meeting as SEC FOS. I think
- 3:25there's a lot of intrigue around it, kind of statewide,
- 3:29whereas people would otherwise not be intrigue. The other thing
- 3:31that I would say is that especially on the Texas side,
- 3:34there's they have legit star power. They have legit you know,
- 3:37with quinn Ewers and a lot of the playmakers they
- 3:40have on the defensive side, like Anthony Hill. They have
- 3:42legit star power that I think draws in perhaps the
- 3:46casual or the people who otherwise wouldn't sit down and
- 3:50watch Texas OU. So I think that the schedule set
- 3:52up in such a way that it did allow for
- 3:55TEXASOU to say, to take center stage in my opinion, rightfully.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So okay, So with that in mind then, and the
- 4:03reason why I say that is with regard to the
- 4:09rest of the week and the other games, Texas of
- 4:14course plays Georgia, and if we remove that, and that's
- 4:17a big remove, but if we removed that this week
- 4:21kind of like what we do with high school football
- 4:23about transporting the games, which of these games involving the
- 4:27State of Texas schools in the state of Texas has
- 4:30you most interested in it? And I'm just going to
- 4:34rattle off the list, and you tell me what comes
- 4:36to mind here, all right. Sam Houston is hosting Western Kentucky,
- 4:40UTEP is hosting FIU, Baylor and Tech play in Lubbock.
- 4:44Houston plays at Kansas, TCU plays at Utah, A and
- 4:48M plays at Mississippi State. North Texas plays at Memphis,
- 4:53Texas State plays at Old Dominion, and let's see Rice
- 4:57plays at Tulane. So of those games, which ones would
- 5:03if you were say, wow, hey, I've kind of got
- 5:05some skin in that, not necessarily financial, but some some
- 5:09interest in it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And UTSA Florida Atlantic by the way too.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Uh, it may be strange to say, I think it
- 5:16might be happening tomorrow night in Huntsville with Sam Houston
- 5:20and Western Kentucky folks. Sam Houston can be Bowl eligible
- 5:24tomorrow night. They're five and one, hosting a good Western
- 5:28Kentucky team and an opportunity, uh to to be to
- 5:31pull one of the great turnarounds I think in college
- 5:34football this year, you know, to go from from really
- 5:38you know last year they were really on zero to
- 5:39twelve watch for a couple of weeks, uh that to
- 5:42go and then suddenly be six and one to start
- 5:45the year would certainly qualify as a big time turnaround there.
- 5:48The other, the other one that that really catches my eye,
- 5:50I think has to be what's going to go on
- 5:52in Lubbock and Baylor Texas Tech.
- 5:54Speaker 1: That is a huge game out there.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I think for Baylor to to to kind of stop
- 5:59the bleeding. But Texas Tech, say this about Joey maguire,
- 6:04They've been very good at home, very very good at home,
- 6:07tough to beat in Lowick, and and you know this
- 6:09is I think a big, high stakes game for both teams.
- 6:12I think for Texas Tech an opportunity to get Bowl
- 6:14eligible at six and one, which is not nothing out
- 6:16there that that would be I think, especially considering you
- 6:20go back to those first two weeks where it was
- 6:22super shaky against Abilene Christian and then a loss to
- 6:25Wazoo UH to rattle off then five straight to get
- 6:28Bowl eligible will be huge. And then for Baylor, I
- 6:30don't want to say they can save their season, but
- 6:32they can start the process of saving their season with
- 6:34a win.
- 6:35Speaker 1: So I think there's really high stakes, high stakes there.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And then look North Texas and Memphis if you're into
- 6:40that kind of thing. North Texas the quietest five and
- 6:43one team in America.
- 6:45Speaker 1: They are.
- 6:45Speaker 3: They are rolling right now, and if they can go
- 6:47on the road at Memphis and get a win, that
- 6:49would be that'll be very big. And then of course
- 6:51nationally ranked SMU with the conference game with their old there,
- 6:55they're I mean that the historic rival I mean when
- 6:59you talk about the great eight historic rivalries in college football,
- 7:02you know Army Navy, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, OU at Auburn, Alabama,
- 7:09and of course SMU and Stanford. That's just there's a long,
- 7:14long lineage of big time matchups between those two programs.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it does. You know.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Something made me think about SMU is pointing out I
- 7:22think I read on Sunday morning that when Pittsburgh won
- 7:28the other day, pitt is six and oh for the
- 7:31first time since nineteen eighty two, and I thought that
- 7:34was the year. The quarterback of that team, by the way,
- 7:37was Dan Marino, and they played SMU and the Cotton
- 7:41Bowl when they had the Pony Express and Lance mclaney
- 7:45from Highland Park was the option quarterback and he had
- 7:48Eric Dickerson and Craig James, and SMU won seven to
- 7:51three in a cold, freezing drizzle that day and now
- 7:56that's that was the high watermark for SMU, who went
- 7:58eleven oho to one and finished second that year because
- 8:01of Penn State beating Georgia to win the national title.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And now SMU and Pitt are in the same conference.
- 8:07About that, so.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Everything, I will tell you one thing that I am monitoring,
- 8:13one thing I'm keeping an eye on.
- 8:14Speaker 1: We'll have to wait till the end of the year.
- 8:15Speaker 3: But but with all these conference realignments and these cross
- 8:18coastal things I do, there's there's there have been kind
- 8:22of studies done in Texas high school football about long
- 8:24road trips and about long travel and specifically a non
- 8:28district if you go over I think it's like one
- 8:30hundred miles or some sort of arbitrary number, but like
- 8:32your chances of winning on the road drop dramatically, And
- 8:36I would be very interested at the end of this
- 8:38to see, especially on the heels of Ohio State going
- 8:41to Oregon and losing, uh you know, you know, cal
- 8:44being suddenly resurgent with programs coming to them and falling.
- 8:47If there are is some sort of uh, what exactly
- 8:51is happening with those kind of cross continental games.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, right, absolutely, I think You're exactly right on focking
- 9:00football with Greg temper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 9:04Football Magazine. Okay, let's uh, let's shift to high school.
- 9:08And I would say that probably you were not going
- 9:14to drop Desota very far in the poll despite being
- 9:18whacked with their second loss. But the two losses they
- 9:21have are to the number one and number three ranked
- 9:24teams in the state, Duncanville North Crowley.
- 9:25Speaker 1: See you factor all that stuff in, right? Yeah? Absolutely?
- 9:29Speaker 3: I mean that's that's the kind of thing is that
- 9:30when you take a look at the at you have
- 9:32to look at the strength of record and strength of
- 9:33resume here and and look for duncan or for De Soto.
- 9:37Speaker 1: They've got too.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Nobody likes the idea of good losses, but they got
- 9:40two very good losses, I mean to Duncanville and then
- 9:42a one score game, uh to to North Crowley, who
- 9:45is a team we have number three in the state.
- 9:48Speaker 1: De Sota is gonna be fine.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I will say this, coming out of that Duncanville and
- 9:52De Soto game, I can't help but feel like this
- 9:55is the most wide open six A has been in
- 9:57a long time, and certainly De Soto and Dunkville are
- 10:00going to be on that short list of teams that
- 10:03can win their respective state championships. They of course have
- 10:06won the last two in their respective divisions. But it
- 10:09does I think, in watching that game and just kind
- 10:12of understanding what else is out there in the six
- 10:15A kind of zeitgeist, I do wonder if six A
- 10:19is just more wide open than it's been in the
- 10:21past few years. And whereas I'll give you an example,
- 10:24last year, it would have been an absolute shocker if
- 10:28De Soto didn't make the state championship in six A
- 10:30Division two. They were I think as prohibitive a favorite
- 10:33as we've seen in quite some time. Now, you look
- 10:36at six A Division two and I think there is
- 10:38a handful of teams depending on who goes D one
- 10:40D two.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Westlake Katie of course can both go D two as well.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That if Desta weren't to make the title game, I
- 10:46don't think it necessarily would be a shocker. I would
- 10:49say the same thing with Duncanville because I think that
- 10:51not necessarily a duncan say anything poor about Duncanville. Two
- 10:55time defending state champs deserved their respecting. The Corey Moore
- 10:57as an absolute monster out there. But I think you
- 11:00take a look at the strength at in sixth A
- 11:02Division one, with teams like North Crawley, with teams like
- 11:05North Shore, with teams like a task Asita, with teams
- 11:08like you know, potentially Katie, potentially Westlake going D one.
- 11:12I think you know Lake Travis, and that makes as well.
- 11:14I think there's reason to believe that when you take
- 11:16a look at six A, there is going to be
- 11:19a greater depth there to challenge for those spots at
- 11:24at and T Stadium, whereas in past years it may
- 11:26have seemed like fada company of who we're going to
- 11:28be seeing in Arland.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Okay, is this a really bad weekend for games.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Across those other than there's in these parts there's like
- 11:40Travis tripping Springs, which is none.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Wrong with that, but is otherwise in a lot most
- 11:47of the rest of the state.
- 11:48Speaker 3: This just kind of kind of Yeah, broadly speaking, I mean,
- 11:53nobody's this is just between you and I, right, nobody's
- 11:55listening to those es you and I talking, right, Okay, Uh, Yeah,
- 11:58it's a tough week. It's a tough week across the state.
- 12:00It it just happens to Fall that way. This kind
- 12:03of happens every couple of years. You just have a
- 12:05week like this where you don't have those big showcase matchups. Look,
- 12:11we're coming off of duncan Ville De Soto. Next week,
- 12:13we have Lake Travis, West Lake. Next week, we have
- 12:16a task to set in North Shore. We've got these
- 12:19massive games across the state next week that we've become
- 12:22so accustomed to this. This week we've got some good games.
- 12:26You're never not gonna You're not never gonna have a
- 12:28dud week. But like you know, Katie and Katie Jordan,
- 12:32you mentioned Lake Travis and Dripping Springs, which big look
- 12:36ahead let down possibility there, don't be looking toward the
- 12:39chaps there calves games like that Fall City and Shiner,
- 12:43you know, sitting in Quero. It's kind of games that
- 12:47in past weeks would provide great depth to a week
- 12:51that I think now give you they kind of rise
- 12:55to the top this week. It's a thinner week across
- 12:58the state quite frankly, but you know what, it'll still
- 13:01be good. And I will also say these weeks tend
- 13:06to be the ones that give us the stunners. Historically,
- 13:09I'd even go back a couple weeks, Craig a Week six,
- 13:11which was the big open date or a third of
- 13:14the state was off, and that is probably on balance,
- 13:17the most chaotic week of the season so far. So
- 13:20just because there's not those headliners, all that does is
- 13:23maybe open up the possibility for some stunners on Thursday,
- 13:27Friday and Saturday. The other reason I mentioned it for
- 13:29folks in these parts is, for example, other games Liberty Hill.
- 13:34According to Jerry Forrest and Pigskin Prep, the computer has
- 13:39Liberty Hill as an eleven point pick. That means it's
- 13:42not a betting line, as we always say, it's just
- 13:45that's what the computer believes will happen. The computer also
- 13:50believes that LBJ will defeat Austin Achieved by one hundred
- 13:54and nineteen points. It actually showed up as one hundred
- 13:59and nineteen LBJ. Now to Jerry's credit, and I salute
- 14:04him for this, he quote unquote pulled that projection off
- 14:08of there and put in l like no line, which
- 14:10is probably good because LBJ is not going to score
- 14:13one hundred and nineteen points, but you get the point
- 14:15and no point in embarrassing achieve which by the way,
- 14:18is ranked out of one hundred and seven five A
- 14:20Division two four A Division one programs one hundred and
- 14:24seventh and LBJ is third.
- 14:26Speaker 1: So yeah, so it's one of that kind of thing.
- 14:29Speaker 3: It's kind of worth resetting sometimes with the computer rankings.
- 14:32The thing that the computer likes, it's an unfeeling robot, right,
- 14:35and what the unfeeling robot likes is dominance. Okay, it
- 14:39likes dominance. It likes you going out there and just
- 14:42just crushing teams. And so what you have with an
- 14:45instance like LBJ and achieved, is you have a team
- 14:48in LBJ that is not just undefeated, but is crushing teams.
- 14:52They have been really, really impressive all year long, and
- 14:56I believe they's outscored their opponents two hundred and sixty
- 15:00two to ninety three. The computer likes that. The computer
- 15:02thinks that's very very good. Achieve has been outscored this
- 15:07year four hundred and fifty three to nothing, and so
- 15:10kind of the opposite of that. And so the computer's
- 15:13just reading the numbers and saying and spitting out some data.
- 15:15It doesn't have anything against achieve, just kind of the
- 15:19way that it's rolling right now. And yeah, it's you
- 15:22have those every once in a while. The funny thing is,
- 15:25and I even ask the master of the computer himself,
- 15:28Chrey Force, about this. Some of the six man games
- 15:30he will cap at forty five, and some of them
- 15:32he won't. So sometimes you'll have like one hundred and
- 15:35three point, you know, you know, one hundred and three
- 15:38point projection on a six man football game.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And other times it'll just.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Be like, oh, it'll be forty five, and we all
- 15:43kind of know, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, what that's going
- 15:45to be. So it's not unheard of that I will
- 15:48say that is the largest projection I've seen in my time.
- 15:52But it also I think just reflects how good LBJ
- 15:55is and and achieved the way they're struggling right.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Now, tep.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Circling back to the Livery Hill foot game that will
- 16:00air on Dave Campbell's Text and Live network Friday Night
- 16:03at the.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Field, Jay, guess who's calling that one? I wonder who yours? Truly?
- 16:07Speaker 4: Now I can't remember it, but I know you have
- 16:09a certain nickname for Liberty Hills slot t offense.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Can you remind me? And can I borrow it for
- 16:16the broadcast and Friday Night?
- 16:17Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:18Speaker 1: I want to be very clear that it doesn't belong
- 16:20to me. It belongs to the world.
- 16:22Speaker 3: It's it's, it's it's, it belongs to the culture, and
- 16:25it is that the slot Tea is the devil. It's
- 16:29it's it is, because the thing is, if you have
- 16:31a week to prepare for it, it is you. You
- 16:34are learning to speak a different language in a week.
- 16:38And that's just kind of like I think it's a
- 16:41credit to the way that that Liberty Hill runs your offense,
- 16:43because the thing that I think is so underrated about
- 16:46Liberty Hill. I have some concerns about their defense that
- 16:49you're giving up some points, but the thing that's underrated
- 16:51about Liberty Hill is that they run it with tempo. Okay,
- 16:55tempo slot T is. If the slot Tea is the devil,
- 17:00Tempo slot T lives in the penthouse in Hell. I mean,
- 17:04it is the absolute the worst thing that you can
- 17:08go up to because they are go up one count
- 17:10and snap and go. They don't allow you to get set.
- 17:13And so that's what we're fond of saying around here.
- 17:16If you run the slot Tea, we have great respect
- 17:18for you, and opposing defensive coordinators should have great fear
- 17:22of you.
- 17:23Speaker 1: That's the way to put it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: He's Greg Chepper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
- 17:28Following at Tepper, They're on x Slash, Twitter, and he
- 17:32co host High School Scoreboard Live with Aaron Hartigan and
- 17:34yours Truly. I will see you Friday nights up in
- 17:37the house. Appreciate the time, tip looking forward to it.
- 17:40Take care, guys.
- 17:40Speaker 1: All right, that's Greg Chepper. All right, we have more
- 17:43coming up.
- 17:43Speaker 2: We'll continue right here on Sports Radio AUM thirteen Hunderd,
- 17:45The Zone, and the iHeartRadio app.
