- 0:08[SPEAKER_03]: Hey everybody, welcome back to the Graimalk & Lane podcast, where queer friends and allies gather to review and discuss the original X-Men comics in continuity order.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_03]: I am thrilled to be reunited myself with two incredible artists that I've befriended through the show, art from both of you on my wall.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_03]: I look at it every day.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_03]: It's a thrill to have you both here.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_03]: Now, we're recording this in December, this will come out in February, but we are focusing on Voodoo this month.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be all about magic and kind of cultural appropriation and the way that we tell certain stories today.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to be talking all about Blade, who is not a character you often think of when it comes to the X-Men.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to be reviewing Blade No.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_03]: 5 from the 2006 run by Mark Guggenheim.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_03]: This includes an early Wolverine story in a very brief flashback, but we're slowly working in Wolverine's backstory on my show as we go, which is where their elements is.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_03]: Let me have you both introduce yourselves, your name and pronouns, tell us a little about you, and my initial question for you both is, what's your favorite vampire movie if you have one?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hi guys, thanks for having me.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my name is Shane saying I'll do a comment book illustrator and I just in general, I have worked in a few comics recently with some majorian comic company called Comic Republic and the title of comic is Dead Republic.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I've also been working on a currently showing a comic.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's called the Cages on Rep2.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's a free comic by Aleksandr
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: and my favorite vampire movie.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to pick one because they're quite a lot but I have one for sensitive mental value.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's not that good and doesn't really hold up now but I like to be on the whole series.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Mostly just because I grew up with them and I had watched a few of them recently with a bigger forefront and story and everything that we ridiculous but it's still like always in their place with my heart.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_03]: Not only there are so many vampire movies, there's a lot of vampire versus wearables movies, which is a crazy thing to realize as well That's a sub genre within the theme.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: I chad nice to be back.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: My name is Dotswap today.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: He him.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm my pronouns.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a visual storyteller.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: My favorite Papa movie used to be Van Helsing, but now I think it's seen us.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really enjoyed that.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_03]: Oh
- 2:25[SPEAKER_03]: Lastly, I'm Chad Anderson.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_03]: I use he himself pronouns as well.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really love the vampire genre in particular, but I do love any story that's very well done.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_03]: And when I was doing my research for the show, it was kind of jarring to me to realize how many vampire films there are, how many books and movies Marvel has a huge section of like vampires like whole superhero teams versus vampires vampire titles that have run for a really long time.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_03]: I think if I had to choose a favorite, I think what we do in the shadows, which is a little bit more like vampire It's like that mockumentary style.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's really delightful and then as far as horror goes that the very recent NOSPERA to film so I I love the original 1920s silent film NOSPERA to it's so classic But that new one really scared me it was really worth it
- 3:16[SPEAKER_03]: It's so jarring.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: Do you guys have any vampire films that you hate that you're just kind of like, well, I'm not my favorite.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, the Twilight series is automatically going to hit sparkly vampire story before me so much.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think if I can change my answer from Underworld to Nostradia do that because I wasn't going to change your answer from Nostradia from Underworld to Twilight.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: Never thought I think the one I hate will probably be the twilight as well.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: I never really got into that.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think I was just above the age of people who were really, you know, forming their love for it.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that will be my answer as well, too.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: If there's a vampire movie, I did not like, um, it's one that was released in the early 90s.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think Ken Reeves was in the movie, but I can't remember by the time, so I didn't like them.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_03]: There, yeah, there's a bunch of, like, everything from interview with the vampire to, you know, to Twilight to, there's so many genres of this and Dracula has been remade so many times.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_03]: We're obsessed with the vampires.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think it is about vampires that people latch on to?
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: Why is this such a common horror trope do you think?
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think factors are just kind of sexy in a way that people enjoy.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: There's the gothic way people kind of interpret them to be.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's the eternal life.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's the blood sucking sensuality of it as well to enjoy.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's fun way to grow a lot of fantasy.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: where you could just introduce many other things to accompany the series and plus, like you said, the battle between werewolves and vampires is also a very good trope to like latch onto.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I'm just going to keep on changing my answer for my favorite vampire movie, because you just mentioned something that reminded me of Castlevania, the animated series, which I also quickly love.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: So again, another thing animation, I also have a lot of vampire stuff going on.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Buffy's Vampire Slayer hasn't come up at all, which is another amazing I can angel or a whole subset Personally, what do you mean to them growing up was the Immotality that's the portrayed I always wanted what it means to live forever I always wanted what kind of pain Dracula used to go through You know
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: And why exactly was that bad?
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: Why was he bad?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: What made him bad?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Just by nature, he used to suck blood.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: Why does I make him bad?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's not like it's it's choice.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love that idea about them.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said, shit, sexiness, sex appeal of vampires.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: I saw that in the underworld.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: I saw that in blade.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: I saw that in, maybe in the twilight.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: They just have this got fixed sexiness that they have.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: This all right.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: And in fact,
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: there's no limb bump.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: I even the guys that he killed in bleed of this coolness to them that I liked growing up.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: I still do, you know.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_03]: I tend to think in terms of tropes of horror and why we're afraid of things.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_03]: We as humans, our life essence is our blood, right?
- 6:13[SPEAKER_03]: And blood is we have an aversion to blood.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_03]: The idea of blood leading the body is so scary.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: And there's a lot of mythological kind of origins in folklore for vampires.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, Dracula really like pushes that to new limits.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_03]: But if you think back to old times when people would have to be what we call blood, like you'd have someone with leaches or things like that draining or or removing blood and effort to try to heal people.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_03]: the idea of coderization, the idea of bloodborne diseases, I think, are really related to this, but it's taken on its own genre of entire fiction.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to toss some vampire superpowers at you guys, because the mythology around vampires isn't nuts.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_03]: Shia, would you rather be able to were you a vampire?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_03]: Would you rather be able to change people into vampires with your bite?
- 6:58[SPEAKER_03]: we're just to consume them completely.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: So you're like the predator of humans.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_03]: Would you change them or just eat them up?
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think I think I eat them up.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like there's one ability to turn someone into a vampire and maybe, you know, how in some of these adaptations to the vampire's theory, the people that they turn into vampires kind of become loyal to them or are following them around or also just become very confused
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: vampire and then now causing so much like chaos.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd rather avoid the responsibility of all of that and just consume people.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_03]: Which is one of the interesting things I'll already point out with zombies.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_03]: Zombies are just like brainless predators, right?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_03]: They just consume.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_03]: But for vampires, their predator and prey, but they still have human traits.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_03]: They still get lonely, want human connection, want control and power.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_03]: Which is another
- 7:51[SPEAKER_03]: under of I think why we get obsessed is because it's often the the older man desiring the young, you know, new bio female or the baby sexy woman who wants the man, right?
- 8:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like it's in those two tropes.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, Doton, where you have empire, would you rather be super strong or super fast?
- 8:09[SPEAKER_03]: I think I'll be fast and she has super durability or super stamina I think durability yeah Dautune super agility or super reflexes.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to be sure if I pick something do I have to be on the negative of the adoption?
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you don't get the other one.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's about, it'll just be normal.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just, I think you'll just be normal, like, stepping out during the listening.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so I won't be weak if I'm fast.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I see what you're saying, yeah, yeah, you wouldn't be precinct one, yes.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so what, what's that, the opposite of the game?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_03]: Super, super agility or super reflexes.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: Reflexes, I need that with my speed and everything.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, share healing or immortality.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that's now the conundrum of, sorry, this is going to be a long answer, but be immortality or healing.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: If I can't heal well being immortal, that's all suck so much.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because if my hand gets chopped off or something happens, or like, let's it pass on my body goes everywhere.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: I won't take you.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Then this will be like a miserable existence.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel it.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_03]: I'll go for healing.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_03]: if you think if you've seen the movie death becomes her it's that old comedy like exactly in mortality and then they get shot done blast like their heads are gone they still are alive and they can never hear you yeah do tune would you rather change into a bat or a wolf?
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: I love flights.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'll be a wolf.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_03]: And Shia, would you rather control insects or control rats?
- 9:34[SPEAKER_03]: I go for insects, rats, con-taper, sorry.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: All right, for the rats.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, don't tune.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_03]: Would you rather be able to change into a gas form or manipulate the blood of other people?
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, um.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: I would love to manipulate the blood of whether it is.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_03]: And, Shia, you can briefly hypnotize other people through eye contact or you can drink blood and then control that mind of the other person.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, I think the blood, like, jank the blood, just second oxygen blood as well as control people.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_03]: And then, uh, and then so soon would you rather be able to control the weather or raise the dead?
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely raise the dead.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's some, I think there will be, there will be need for that in the plot.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_03]: What are your thoughts on this?
- 10:16[SPEAKER_03]: This is a pretty comprehensive list, but if you'd like even just jump on to like the Dracula Marvel character This is all listed in his power set in the handbooks like there's also the abilities.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy Amazing, you tend to have that to some characters in Marvel as the years go by just like a lot of power sets back just I mean things in power sets I just keep on getting I did to it's but for that he just it just kind of seemed very like invulnerable like very I can play
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: principle to anybody else.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: So seems from like even from a writing perspective.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's a be hard to know who wants to do it than I think.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's the it's the superman of the underworld.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_03]: And then if we talk about vampire vulnerabilities, we also write a really complex list of things, right?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_03]: And I'll just kind of run down this very quickly.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_03]: They're vulnerable to silver, wooden stakes, decapitation, fire, ice will slow them down, religious symbols, particularly if you have a lot of faith behind them.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_03]: That's like the cross, right?
- 11:13[SPEAKER_03]: In the sunlight, they have to sleep in the coffin that's lined with their own soil or stay near the ground where they were created.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_03]: They can't cross water, they have to be invited into your home.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_03]: They can't see themselves in mirrors, they can't be photographed, and they're vulnerable to holy water.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_03]: Plus the stuff related to things like garlic, I mean, the list kind of goes on and on here, but it's an interest to watch the amount of vulnerability that they have.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: So then we have the era of vampire hunters.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_03]: It's the human who's going after the undead creature who's super powerful, but learns their vulnerabilities and then prepares themselves accordingly.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_03]: the tune, what are your thoughts on the vampire weaknesses or the concept of the vampire hunter?
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: I like the concept because I think the creators of this archetype, they kind of knew what they were doing, making them OP and I think they wanted to create this balance where like she said, how do you write for these characters?
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: And then you throw in things like garlic, you have to invite them in, you kill them with this with wood,
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: And all of that makes it kind of interesting to critically interesting to write for them.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: And what is one that who started this idea where you have to invite them in, was it from both of you?
- 12:29[SPEAKER_03]: No, I think it comes from before that.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know the origin of that specific thing, but I do think it.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_03]: I've seen older films that also has that kind of rule.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, boy, I think that's very interesting.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's very, very interesting.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think even for the vampire hunter, it's definitely a good aspect of the vampire history to have weaknesses, but I do believe there's some times when writers kind of remove or cherry pick which kind of weakness they want in their vampire history.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: The funniest one being the Twilight one where they go bigly turn in the sun, just to, you know, not just to dark all the time.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_03]: But also all the vampires in that world get superpowers.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's like Xavier's
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, there's also that to just remind me about that, but I think it's one definitely and I think with the religious symbols to also adds that kind of religious aspect to the story where you're in a church and you're like praying and like vampire comments where you can do anything when the cross comes to you.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's very visually like compelling in that is that way.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's fascinating to me how we create genres around this.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_03]: This also exists for zombies in particular, but there's vampire comedy.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_03]: I mentioned like what we do in the shadows.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_03]: There's family, satire.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_03]: What happens if you put a vampire in the old west?
- 13:42[SPEAKER_03]: Or you hire a babysitter for your kids, but the babysitter turns out to be a vampire.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_03]: Or it's vampires in like the mafia.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_03]: Or we have films and I'm referencing real films here, by the way.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_03]: We have films like Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, and Jesus Christ and Empire Hunter.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_03]: Marvel once produced a zombie, like Christmas carol.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_03]: It's like the screwed show, but it's with zombies.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_03]: Like there's all these kind of sub-genres of the way we do things.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_03]: And then there's incredible things, which, by the way, favorite films for vampires, sinners that was just out last year.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_03]: Incredible.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's like singing vampires who were part of the Ku Klicks class.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, crazy genre.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_03]: It's really interesting to consider all one of my favorite subsets.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if either of you have ever seen Black Gila, which is the 1970s Black exploitation film, the very basic premise.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_03]: It's almost a comedy.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_03]: It's it's a little
- 14:39[SPEAKER_03]: It was released in 1972.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's about an African Prince named Mama Walebe, who gets turned by Count Dracula in Transylvania in 1780.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_03]: And then he ends up, well, because Dracula refused to help the Prince end the slave trade.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_03]: So this is a black black people for black people, but it's like a horror comedy.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_03]: He has been a coffin and shipped to Los Angeles and there's like a gate couple that buys a house and opens it up And then you know this black vampire comes out and consumes them and it's this whole thing He goes on a killing spree.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_03]: He's killing black victims.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_03]: He's killing white honkies It's it's a really rad movie and there's a sequel called screen black yellow screen It's very campy, but I kind of feel like this is where Marvel got the idea for the character blade because Black is kind of a cult classic have either of you seen
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't, but I do remember, I do remember you mentioning it during the necrata time when I was gay.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: I knew tell it so interesting, so I definitely will check it out.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we talk necrata with necrata.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's so good.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_03]: Now, then we go to Marvel trying to make movies.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to skip over a bunch of history.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_03]: Marvel's been trying to make movies from the 70s and 80s.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_03]: And their first really big hit is Blade.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_03]: We have Wesley Snipes in the Blade movie.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_03]: There's a trilogy.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_03]: The first movie doesn't hold up as much as I rewatched it.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_03]: I hadn't seen it in several years.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_03]: I rewatched it.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_03]: And it's so in your face, the camera angles are really jarring and there's a lot of like really sharp action that doesn't I don't know quite it seems more focused on action than the story, but it's excellent and it feels like that kind of old genre of Blacksploitation film, even though it's a fully collaborative team in the 1990s really really revolutionized Marvel's industry for a while and then they kept trying to make it happen again.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_03]: Blade was coming out in different comic books that were never quite successful.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_03]: In 1994, I'm gonna jump through history, we'll jump back in a moment.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_03]: Blade the Vampire Hunter got his own series by Ian Edgenton and Doug Wheatley.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: It ran for 10 issues, didn't sell very well.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_03]: And then in 1998, is when Wesley Snipes starred in the film.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_03]: The tagline on the film is the power of an immortal, the soul of a human, the heart of a hero.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_03]: Because Blade's origin is that his mom got bit when she was pregnant and then he was born like,
- 16:52[SPEAKER_03]: with vampire abilities.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_03]: Have you guys seen the Blade films at all?
- 16:57[SPEAKER_03]: Did you like them?
- 16:58[SPEAKER_03]: Blade by the way, as Wesley Snipes made a recent appearance in the Deadpool Wolverine movie, if you guys recall, too.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I love Blade except the last one, bro.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_01]: It does okay.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: I loved the first two.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think at the time when I saw them, I think it was the best thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: Chained everything about the superhero movies that I used to see.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: And that time there was a lot of parody movies too.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: So seeing this movie was just amazing.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like you can make fun of this.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: So just the best thing ever.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I loved the actor, Wesley Snipes.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, you're right.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: The first one was more like,
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: article and coolness and the vibe and all of that's not too much attention was paid on story but there was a story there but it was more like you said the camera angles and everything it had that strong super hero, the genera take like incredible hook with Eric Banner you know they had comic panels and the movie and everything you know the director was also showing us that just they comic book movie but take this thing seriously but I did tell you how over you in
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so you saw this later when yes, I saw it like maybe 90.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's well, yeah, you were little so this was a film you watched as like a kid Pressed my nose blown All that brother, so was just now.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's never been to me that you see what did he there is what that means you know you remember when you said that That's this what that mean so it was just amazing.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was best in I'd seen
- 18:24[SPEAKER_03]: Here's a film review by Roger Ebert.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_03]: It says Blade is a movie that relishes high visual style.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: It uses the extreme camera angles, the bizarre costumes and sets, the exaggerated shadows, the confident cutting between long shots and extreme close ups.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_03]: It slams ahead in pure visceral imagery, but the film only has a 59% on rotten tomatoes.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_03]: So again, it doesn't quite hold up in today's Jadra, I don't think.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't recall the first time I did, and right now, I only see little flashes of this in my mind when I try to remember what it looked like.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't say specifically how these old hold-up, now I feel like it's still a reward just to see how it is.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: But for my own memory, all I can think of when I think of Blade is
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: him, Jessica Beale, and I'm also just remembering that Ryan Reynolds was in the movie because we're around for so long in like a marble.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: So that's just quite interesting to me.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, session that I remember very little, very little, only like with this night's, but the other characters, but I'd love to watch it again.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_03]: So let's go back to the early 1970s, the comics code authority, which has been like policing all content in books for many years at this point relaxes some of its views and Marvel and other companies are now allowed to tell horrors stories in a different way it's the post Vietnam generation post civil rights generation we've been talking a lot about on this this on my show over this last year if you've been listening.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_03]: Now, in the early 70s, we had a number of books coming out from where we'll find night to Ghost Rider to Brother Voodoo, which we'll talk about next week.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_03]: And in 1973, Marvel gets the Tomb of Dracula series, and it's great.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_03]: It's, it's really well regarded.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_03]: It's Marvelousman and Gene colon.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you any of you listening have read at the old Tomb of Dracula stuff, a lot of it's been collected in trades, but it's pretty fantastic.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_03]: I would highly recommend it.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_03]: Go Strider and we're both my night from the same era.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_03]: Go kind of camp superhero.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_03]: Go Strider is a guy with a demon flaming skull head, but
- 20:26[SPEAKER_03]: Mostly his book is about motorcycle stunt writing and like his villains are all motorcycle carnival, you know It's like a silly version of all this, but two of Dracula is excellent Highly highly recommended and it's in this series that we meet blade for the first time
- 20:41[SPEAKER_03]: So we start to see more black characters, Luke Cage and Falcon and other characters are showing up around the same time.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Black Panther's been around a while.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_03]: We see Misty Knight and a lot of these characters are direct references to films that we're coming out in the Blacksploitation era.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_03]: Misty Knight is Pam Breyer, for example.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Luke Cage Power Man is shaft.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's direct, it's like the white writers saw a Black film and thought, let's create that character.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_03]: And these characters are the ones that we still use all these years later,
- 21:10[SPEAKER_03]: In fact, Marvel loves to do black anthology in black panther or other price specials.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_03]: You'll see a thing where all the black superheroes from the 70s get together to fight the villain.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_03]: Monica Rambo and Moon Girl and everybody else starts to join, but it's all the old classics kind of getting together for one big superhero Robb.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_03]: We see this quite frequently in modern books over the last 20 years or so.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_03]: But let me talk about the origins of Blade in the comics very quickly.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_03]: His name is Eric Brooks, and he's British.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_03]: I think a lot of people forgot that.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_03]: He's born in London in 1929.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_03]: His mother's name is Vanessa Brooks.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_03]: She was pregnant and she went into labor at a doctor because of complications.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_03]: But her doctor turns out to be a guy named Deacon Frost.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_03]: who is the villain in the Blade Films, by the way.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_03]: And as the woman's getting birth, he bites her neck and this event forever alters the baby as it's born, transforming Blade into what is called a dampere, DH-A-M-P-I-R, or kind of like a half vampire in a way that more-be-more-be-us-the-living vampires his own version of that, right?
- 22:10[SPEAKER_03]: Marvel created a vampire in the 70s that was like a science vampire because they couldn't get away with creating a real one in the comics go to authority.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_03]: So retroactive continuity puts blade on missions as far back as the 1940s.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_03]: So he has like a very long life.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_03]: He joined an ad hoc group called The Mighty Avengers in the 1970s in a retroactive story.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_03]: He fathered a child bloodline with his love saffron Calder who's a relatively new
- 22:32[SPEAKER_03]: character created by my friend Danny Laura and really beautifully used by Anthony Oliver and the recent Avengers Academy series.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_03]: But when we go back to first meeting him, he's hunting vampires alongside Quincy Harker, Rachel Van Helsing, Frank Drake.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_03]: He gets bit by Dracula in an early mission but he's immune to vampire bites.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_03]: He gets to hunt down his mother's killer.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_03]: In more recent stories, if you guys read Jed McHaze story where like the world went and dark,
- 23:00[SPEAKER_03]: Into a vampire for a period of time in the bloodhunt era of even the 90s he groups he joins the night stalkers He helps form the midnight sons and all those 90s horror books and then he got a few one shots a few limited series in the late 90s early 2000s He got a max series that leads us up to 2006 which the film has been a big deal and they've now hired my friend Mark Guggenheim to launch a new title
- 23:22[SPEAKER_03]: Mark is paired with Howard Chacon here.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_03]: We've shared a lot of thoughts on Howard Chacon's art in recent episodes of my show as we do these old reviews.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's of its time Howard's a class act in that way, but Mark is really trying to not just tell crazy vampire stories, but actually delve into the origins of Blade.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_03]: Let's go back to his history.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_03]: Let's tell where he comes from and tell really epic stories along the way.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: You see, I want his blood when he asks me to read his books.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because there's only something new to learn something new to see and I'd never imagined that I would see Blade and Wolverine together in this way and it was so emotional at some point.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh wow, okay this is where this is leading to and this is how it's going to give us the resolution.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: I love the resolution being here.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: I love the resolution so much.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_03]: Marisa was another one of those characters.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_03]: I don't get to talk about often on the show.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_03]: She's in the Avengers movies, played by Colby Smolders from How I Met Your Mother.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_03]: Maria, when I was on the handbooks, she was one of the profiles that I was assigned.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: So I had to read her recent history.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_03]: And if you go to the Marvel Appendix, there's a Maria Hill profile that I have kept up over the years.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_03]: She's not a character that I'm often, but I love her very much.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: I love her so much.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: I love her so much.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm bend is one of my favorite moments with how I was bend is said, and I think in civil war too.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: She was talking to Tony Stark, and she said, I'm Tony stole, but I don't count to three.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, whoa, okay.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: But when we're doing, we're working on Iron Man.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: We really needed to add that to the story, and we did some research, and I just fell in love with the character.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I saw him just book him like, oh, look at how he gains so amazing.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: So amazing.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: Listeners will recognize I have not dubbed into the topic of vampires in the X-Men.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to save that for another time because the X-Men have their whole history with Storm and Dracula and Blood Storm and Jubilee and all these things are leading.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_03]: But Bendus does write Maria Hill in his era on the X-Men at every time she's like up in the hell of carrier and every time the X-Men show up, she's a god damn it, not the X-Men again.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_03]: I fucking hate these guys.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_03]: But you have thoughts on the introductions of Blader, I offered a minute ago.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, honestly, whenever I read what you're going to be covering today, I had to go to Wikipedia of all places to kind of remember what's been as well as his origins.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: And when you, like you mentioned, I had no idea it was born, it was like a British person, like born there.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: And technically he's mixed-rate.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was just very interesting like comparing that to what be current understanding of who Blade is now.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: So it was very funny.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, also just the history of Blade because I realized I had no idea what for his origins there.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like White had certain powers or why he was this present or even
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: that I think have been changed a little or just had a red cons.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I still don't have the proper timings of who exactly is.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm interested in most familiar now.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like you said, I'm in Bloodhunter where you had a lot of focus on that was also I think a proper one of the first proper like comics I've read of him and it doesn't make very interesting character that I feel like why isn't he bigger because of just who he is in the currents like
- 26:51[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if I'm honest, I really look for things to be fond of.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_03]: Blades not a character that I love.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not excited when he shows up.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm not exactly sure why that is because it has nothing to do with you necessarily.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_03]: Like I really like bloodline for example, his daughter when she's in some comics.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_03]: I've become an enormous fan.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_03]: But Blades, I don't know, he feels a little bit like an unknown to me as well, even after reading a lot of his stuff.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what you know, like that is, but yeah, he doesn't connect.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_03]: I think I felt the same.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's probably because to do maybe his age, or maybe his attitude sometimes kind of perceive like this cold kind of roller on the edges kind of pleasant.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: So that's probably why.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: And also just because like older male characters, I know I just got in like close to.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: However, I would say, and let's not do nerdy things to say, Marvel rivals have turned the page on me for Blade, because he has a lot of, like, Elizabeth of like a funny personality to kind of juxtapose his cold and serious thing.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: Like, this kind of character's who are so cold and serious, it actually comes funny in like a normal contact.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he also had this sleeping for like two seasons in Marvel rivals, so that'll go say funny things of seeing him, like sleep and be unaware of all the chaos that was going on.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_03]: For those of you that listen to my character episodes, they start on the Patreon, then come to the main show, but I'm producing a lot of these episodes on old characters and people, a lot of people are like, oh, I don't know who that is, except, oh, yeah, they have like a card in Marvel rivals or Marvel snap like they're only listening to them from.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: It's a new generation, I suppose.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_03]: Now there's a series of blades.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_03]: There's a page at the back where Mark Guggenheim, again, who's become a friend through the show.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_03]: Mark's like, look, I really want to make blade happen here.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's been a lot of failed attempts.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_03]: Let's really try to dig in.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_03]: And of course, this series doesn't last, but it's pretty good.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_03]: Issue 1 is Spider-Man and Dracula.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_03]: Issue 2 is Dr. Doom.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_03]: Issue 3 is a Santa Claus Vampire which is really fun and it starts developing more into blades early years because Blade in the 70s Blade in the Tomb of Dracula series is my favorite Blade.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_03]: If you go read Tomb of Dracula, Blade's amazing there.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_03]: He's like a kind of a powerhouse.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_03]: But this series starts to push into his early origins.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_03]: We learn he was raised in a brothel.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_03]: His father was a guy named Lucas Cross who turns out to be a member of the Order of Tyranna.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_03]: which is a mystical order of vampire hunters.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_03]: So blade getting blades mother getting bit has now some additional origins because it blades fathers of vampire hunter.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_03]: But we're just gonna jump right into the issue today with that set up.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_03]: Today is issue five.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_03]: The title of this issue is Vendetta's Echo and it's a civil war tie in.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_03]: So this is where Marvel is.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_03]: Marvel's government is trying to register superheroes.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_03]: Maria Hill and Shield are rounding up superheroes that refuse to register, because it's now against the law not to do so.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_03]: Which I don't know, in 2025 America, as fascism roots are widely showing, this is an uncomfortable title to revisit the Civil War.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_03]: And we do have comments on fascism in this issue, which is crazy.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_03]: This cover by Marco George Vick is crazy.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_03]: Don't you want to tell us about the cover of this book?
- 29:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's jarring.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: I love the cover.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: I love the cover.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: I wish I saw it for about back then.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like you would touch the reflection of who ran in shades, shades, and in blades, shades.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: And and blades is flexing is immortality by smiling greening so hard.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: don't bleed in with Wolverine's clothes running through his skull.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's just crazy.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's edgy, it's cool, it's crazy, it's ridiculous.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's fantastic.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: It says a lot about the caraptals.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: Wolverine will face anybody.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: And blade is like this cool cocky guy.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Everything is just perfect.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: The lighting is also like from underneath his face.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: And it's casting his shadow towards the top of his fish of frames, planes.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_03]: And blade smiling as the three quasi-clicks
- 30:42[SPEAKER_03]: The most interesting thing to me about this cover is the color, though.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_03]: In superhero covers, you're so often accustomed to blues and greens and reds and yellows.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_03]: And this is like a deep kind of brown with like even the yellow in the title or the words is like a very muted.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like it looks like Halloween, you know, in its own kind of way.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's a man of color wearing brown against a backdrop of brown with these kind of pops of gold or like a little bit of silver sheen and I love the tagline of this series above blade it simply says it takes one to kill one which is an excellent discovery of a very cool about the style of the way we'll bring is like depicted in the cover to not taking too much focus off of a blade and what's still being there and I kind of wish this was probably the issue
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: just to kind of align with Wolverine's claws right in the middle of the cover, just to kind of add to that for, you know, he can't ask what's in what I guess.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: But generally I do love it.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think even how Blade is depicted here, it's kind of what I have in my mind of Blade, what he looks like, it's compared to what he looks like in the comic in the actual comic.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I was just like, oh, this is why are they different?
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's kind of who I always imagine,
- 31:58[SPEAKER_03]: Wolverine's going through a lot in this era in his book.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_03]: We're not going to delve into it.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to focus on the Wolverine story and the only reason I'm including it in the show in this era because it does include a Wolverine flashback, which rakes it again.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_03]: I'm trying to work in the flash because as we go in this perfectly fit the genre for the month.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_03]: So this is from March 2007, Mark Guggenheim, Howard Chicken, Edgar Delgado on Inks, Russ Wooden on Letters, Aubrey Citerson, is the editor of this book.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm gonna focus mostly on Wolverine here, even though it's a blade book, but we'll talk about it as we go.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, Shia, are you a fan of a Howard Chicken's pencils?
- 32:27[SPEAKER_03]: He has a signature style.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's not for everyone.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I can't say it's for me either, but, you know, it's not something I hate.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not something I, I mean, nearly joined to.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just say that.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm going to read the literal first page out loud because the dialogue in this scene is almost my favorite part of the whole book.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_03]: So we're jumping to the shield hell carrier Wolverine is in shackles.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_03]: He's been arrested because he won't register for the government.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_03]: He's on Captain America side here, not Iron Man's.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_03]: And Maria Hill is kind of dressing him down.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_03]: Wolverine, Maria, Director Hill.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_03]: Where you keep in mind to it, landing in Friends Maria.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_03]: This is a reference to his book.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_03]: He has some at landing in friend allies who've been captured.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_03]: But we're not going to get into it here.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_03]: No, where they have diplomatic immunity, we let them go.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_03]: That must be a disappointment.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_03]: You not being able to stick them in the Gulag.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_03]: I hear stark and richards are building, because Mr.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_03]: Fantastic and Iron Man are literally building a prison in the negative zone and tossing people into it without due process.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy, crazy dives.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_03]: So almost funny how quick some people are to label sensible legislation as fascism says Maria, which is something I feel like the Trump government would say today, which is great.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_03]: So trading liberty for safety is what's passing for sensible these days because I seem to think the model of America And I'm Canadian so that might be why I'm confused used to be give me liberty or give me death Or all Canadians this judgmental when it comes to America pretty much which is entirely fair
- 33:47[SPEAKER_03]: Excuse me.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_03]: In any case, you've got two choices, play ball and get immunity for your past actions or spend the rest of your natural life, which given your delayed aging is interminable in shackles, or I could slice through these same shackles, grab your side arm and shoot my way out of here.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_03]: I had to be the one to tell you this, who do you need, but that'd be a trick seeing as how that collar you're wearing isn't a fashion statement.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_03]: It's a level 10 power nullifier.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's a mistake most people may.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_03]: What is to think just cause my claws or the result of a genetic mutation that they're a super power?
- 34:20[SPEAKER_03]: And they like like pops his adamantium claws rips his way out, grabs their side arm and jumps through the hell of carrier window and escapes.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_03]: Two page start, but an epic beginning before we'll bring.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: It made it seem like it wasn't a code of name but it just segue into that action sequence beautifully.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you are impatient, if you are at a comic book store and you just if they allow you to flip through books, I don't know if they're doing the U.S. for in some places here you can flip through before someone comes and says, hey, please don't flip through to me.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: But you can't put two pages and quickly get a few of what you want to buy.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: I tell you you're going to be hooked from those pages
- 35:02[SPEAKER_03]: Our either of you a Morbius the living vampire fan.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_03]: No, I'm not.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's not a whole movie, which is crazy.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't seen it.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: Ladies and gentlemen, I love a cringe film though.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of my favorite pastimes is having friends over and making cocktails.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_03]: And we watch terrible movies and Morbius as soon as it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 35:25[SPEAKER_00]: panels, the Lasso speech bubbles, I was very surprised, like how much they were, but yeah, just interesting to see.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_03]: So, Blaze, he corners Morbius in an alley, but Morbius is working for shield.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_03]: Morbius has registered at his bringing in others, so he activates a thing in a whole bunch of what they call Cape Killers.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_03]: It's
- 35:47[SPEAKER_03]: the shield units come into a rest blade.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, I'm not even a superhero.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_03]: And he tells them to go goose step over somewhat at somebody else, which is in literal reference to Nazis once again.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_03]: So Mark Guggenheim's colleague at what it is at the time.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_03]: He pulls his weapons out.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_03]: Then we get a flashback to the past.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_03]: And the art style changes, the coloring changes, but the art remains that the coloring remains really dark.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_03]: And there's a lot of browns and grays and blacks and silvers throughout this book.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, well, it's so cool.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it'd be confusing before I got to why they were having that spiked.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why I'm Mogger's food would sign that registration act.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't kind of make sense to me.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I just let it slide, I guess.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: But the art, I think, so when I get to script usually, I'm like, if it's an action sequence, one of the important questions I ask myself is, at what point do I want to capture this point or this kick?
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: And art is here, as decided, brilliantly,
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: to capture, in a very strange reaction, in a very late or midpoint stage, almost late, such that it doesn't look as kinetic as it should be.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: However, it still sells the idea that there was an impact behind that swing.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: Very interesting.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: I compared that choice to
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: the point in the action that the cup show is always very interesting to me.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't do that because I don't have that much faith in how I would portray it.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_01]: But somehow, even though it doesn't look as kinetic, because when it comes to actions, the only step was to give us the most kinetic way of stretch there and everything.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_03]: And they just decide to give you this point where you're not sure if they're about to swing or they've swung and somehow Yeah, I think I think in comic book art especially in superhero battles we've talked about action choreography a little bit on my show I think some people approach it from the lens of like I'm the camera man like it's my job to show you the dynamic shot
- 37:36[SPEAKER_03]: Chacon almost used to, like the images we're seeing are like snapshots.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_03]: It's like a bunch of polaroids of the battle we're taken.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_03]: And we just get these kind of random shots of that wing that action in between.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_03]: It is an interesting view.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_03]: And then there's a lot of panels per page.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_03]: So it doesn't give you that same or super hero feel in the way that the cover does, right?
- 37:54[SPEAKER_03]: Because the cover is that like best angle possible.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at this in a way, they kind of just seem like they're dancing a little.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you look at their poses and imagine those music playing, they kind of seem like they're dancing.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_03]: Which feels more like an electric thing, right?
- 38:10[SPEAKER_03]: Like that's how I view electors' fights is more like dancing your feet.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_03]: We go back to the past and we see a couple of old blade allies.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_03]: These are characters from the old 1994 series, Gloryanna and Hector, and they're talking about how there was a man who attacked some people and people think it's a vampire.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_03]: He's been working in the area for a while, probably in some sort of superhero capacity.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_03]: They say he has a cowboy hat and a long badass raincoat.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_03]: And he got the move on some criminals and stop some things from happening.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_03]: And this guy's like, I'm
- 38:41[SPEAKER_03]: I'm positive it's a vampire like he showed me some spang at some things.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_03]: I swear on my mother's life It was a vampire.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_03]: No, we're gonna learn later.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_03]: It was Wolverine.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_03]: We jumped back to the present.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_03]: Blade has been brought into Marie Hill.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_03]: And again, I'm gonna take time to read the dialogue here because I love Marie as so much.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_03]: How's the chest?
- 38:56[SPEAKER_03]: Little sore?
- 38:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's not something Kevlar puts in their brochures.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_03]: Is it?
- 39:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's DuPont actually Kevlar's just the brand name.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_03]: Just at a curiosity, what would have happened if I hadn't been wearing a vest?
- 39:06[SPEAKER_03]: My men wouldn't have taken the shot.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_03]: We had a real time 360 degree x-ray on you.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_03]: We could tell what you had for dinner.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_03]: I already know what I had for dinner.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_03]: What I don't know is why you went to all the trouble.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_03]: Well, there's the matter of a $90 billion hella care.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_03]: You're formally known as the Paraclyce 5.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_03]: You had a minor vampire infestation.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_03]: I did you guys a favor.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_03]: This is referencing a recent battle where he killed a bunch of shield agents who were vampires.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_03]: And now we're hoping you could help us without with another problem.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_03]: She pulls out a book and there's pictures of Wolverine.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_03]: Just a bunch of red to shots.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_03]: They get saved.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_03]: They grab the shots of the character.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_03]: Wolverine.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_03]: Have you two met?
- 39:41[SPEAKER_03]: Sure a bunch of times over at the superhero clubhouse.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_03]: He makes cookies.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_03]: No, actually I've never had the pleasure.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_03]: Well, with your skills, resilience and delightful sense of humor, our tacticians shield tacticians.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_03]: That's almost funny.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_03]: Our tacticians have you pegged as having the best shot at taking him down.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, all I'm missing is a reason to.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_03]: How does full immunity sound?
- 40:01[SPEAKER_03]: Date and federal charges a complete get out of jail free card.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_03]: What's your beef with Wolverine anyway?
- 40:06[SPEAKER_03]: He violated the Superhuman Registration Act and he ticked me off.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_03]: That's nice, but I don't care about that.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_03]: I don't care about either.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: You should.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: That is if you want us to keep turning a blind eye to your hobby, excuse me, you're a superhuman under the terms of the Registration Act, which makes any non-government sanction vampire hunting of felony.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_03]: Lady, do I strike you as someone who gives a fuck?
- 40:25[SPEAKER_03]: Just how easy have things been for you these past few months?
- 40:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'd think being on the run from the lock would have cramped your style a bit, bring Wolverine in dead or alive.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_03]: I don't very much care.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_03]: And you've got cart launch to stake as many vamps as your little heart desires.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_03]: Plus, I'll even give you access to shields resources.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: Is there some piece of paper you want me to sign?
- 40:45[SPEAKER_03]: What are your thoughts on this interchange shade?
- 40:47[SPEAKER_03]: I love, I love any time someone's writing for you.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_03]: She's so delicious to be here.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I love it.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_00]: I love the personality that they both have, especially her, you know, it's very funny having to reach out to somebody to do a job for you, especially somebody you don't want, you don't necessarily want to kind of bend to their will or listen to their demands.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_00]: But part of frame him, immunity and him taking it, a lot of it, interesting to me.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't exactly sure what to make him take it.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: But immunity for hence continue killing
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: vampire's, I guess, would be what's played once, you know, as a general, like this is to his character.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like, yeah, sure.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was interesting.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: It was that quick to change his mind to go hunting for a shield.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_03]: So we jumped back to the past.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_03]: Blade has heard about this vampire who was really Wolverine, but finds a literal vampire living in the streets and goes after it with a steak.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_03]: We come back to the present.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_03]: Blade is now broken into Wolverines, hideout through the window, and Wolverine is waiting in full
- 41:49[SPEAKER_03]: very young.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_03]: This is one of his really yellow looks.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't look so good to me.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_03]: Is it the costume or the way it's drawn?
- 41:55[SPEAKER_03]: I think
- 41:56[SPEAKER_03]: I really don't know yet, but it doesn't look good.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_03]: So Wolverine says, hey, Bob, you lost.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_03]: Buddy, I just got back from 15 rounds with a mega red, and I'm tired.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_03]: I'm pissed, and all I care about in the world is getting my hands on a brew.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: I love when they were right Wolverine with this cut a dialogue.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_03]: My point is, you want to pick a fight with me that's fine, but I'm getting myself a beer first.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_03]: Blades says, change a plan.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_03]: Shield wants to have a word with you, and they sent you to bring me in edge, right?
- 42:21[SPEAKER_03]: Blade, that registration act should.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_03]: Seems like I love that he calls him Edge.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_03]: Your name's Edge, right?
- 42:28[SPEAKER_03]: And they think you're new for their best shot.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_03]: Seems like, can see where you got your handle from, nice, blade.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_03]: He says as Blade pulls a knife out in the Wolverine double snicks.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_03]: So if we get that classic pedal of the crossed clause but I got it outnumbered by five.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_03]: Blade lunges for combat.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_03]: Don't worry, I'm called Blade because I only need one.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_03]: You sure about that, says Wolverine, as he slashes through the Kevlar that Blade is wearing.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_03]: And Blade has stabbed Wolverine right in the chest.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_03]: It is a Blade dagger in Wolverine says outji.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_03]: Tell me something.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have a healing factor?
- 43:01[SPEAKER_03]: As he pushes himself forward on the blade, lets it go all the way through his body.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_03]: And he slashes Blade.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_00]: face of immortality based fighting, knowing that you can't die so just like taking the punches or the stubs in this case and just continuing with the fights and you know the dialogue in between fighting is always so funny.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think the reason why the costume may look a little funny too.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: Totally because the person here's in the same scene like it's wearing like a leather like
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's a letter like Jackets and all black and you know, costumes.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_00]: I was looking very interesting when you're in context with people who seem to be dressed normally But yeah, funny funny fights for me very interesting like dialogue is all it's very who's dick is bigger right like we both Yeah, who's the bigger blade?
- 43:46[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, we're gonna jump back to the past again blade is hunting down this vampire Don't you like this vampire's costume
- 43:55[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, this is an ugly fucking vampire giant ass queers bald and it looks like it's just wearing like a simple house dress I'm guessing there's no one This is it More than a creation Well, go about kind of looks like you're out.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_03]: Say a little if you see it's very this is this is not a pretty vampire for sure Everyone I've been watching the walking dead with my kid and there's all kinds of vampires as zombies, but every once in a while There's a real ugly zombie.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_03]: You're just like
- 44:24[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, the vampire is fighting Blade when Blade sees the man in the cowboy hat in the trench coat standing off in the shadows and he's like, ah fuck.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_03]: This is like, this isn't the guy that I'm looking for.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_03]: We jump back to present Wolverine's son's plate across the jaw.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_03]: And he says, I'm going to take that sword and stick it up here, but Blade draws a gun and shoots Wolverine so many times.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_03]: There's like 30 blamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamblamb
- 44:47[SPEAKER_03]: I couldn't hear you over the gunfire, Wolverine's like, ah, fuck, and they're like fighting.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_03]: I'm assuming he's about to go berserk or rage here.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_03]: Where's the witty reparty says, Blade, not wasted good material on a dead man.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_03]: I may be half vampire, but I ain't dead, nights.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_03]: Wolverine fully strattles blade, draws his claws into the air, and blade reaches up and rips his cowlop.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_03]: So we get Wolverine.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_03]: This almost is a little bit romantic.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_03]: And then played pulls up a syringe.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's ready to inject into Wolverine's neck.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_03]: This here's a vial of vampire blood.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_03]: When an enters a person's blood stream, the vampire enzymes term him.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_03]: Something tells me you're healing factor won't keep you from vamping out.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_03]: Then all I need is one good steak.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_03]: You ask me, that's game set and match above.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_03]: Do you think this would work with this kill worrying?
- 45:36[SPEAKER_03]: Blade briefly turns him into a vampire and then stakes him.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, go on shit.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: No, I was just going to say I didn't really get the logic of it.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of if Wolverine does have a hidden factor and that has been known to like survive everything.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, they do not know for sure, but it's possible.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's possible.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_03]: There is a what if two-parter, what if Wolverine became Lord of the Vampires?
- 45:59[SPEAKER_03]: And it's like a story about Wolverine turning full Dracula and like turning heroes in the world to vampires.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_03]: You and I know exactly.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_03]: There's an image of Wolverine, like with a side grin, like as he's looking down and playing with the, the, the, the, the, the, the engine is neck.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's an excellent shot of the character with his huge chin.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I had to do your worst.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_03]: What's the matter lost your nerve and then play it apparently remembers the past.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I'm gonna let you go, like I think we crossed paths once before, uh, which match you have better things to do with your time, sorry about the misunderstanding, and then he goes back and tells Maria Hill Wolverine's off limits.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_03]: You want me to take marching orders, that's fine.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_03]: So long as you let me keep doing what I do, we won't have a problem.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_03]: But unless Wolverine kills somebody, he's not supposed to, you back off of him or, or you'll answer to me with that.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_03]: How do he say to you?
- 46:48[SPEAKER_03]: Nothing, I just realized, I owe him.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_03]: So the flashback here is very minor to the story, but we have this moment where Blade has that realization.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it's fun.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a very, very cool story and not distracting or sweet.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: too much spectacle.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's what we would expect.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: I was expecting to see like this badass fight and maybe less dialogue during the action scenes, which I prefer.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: But there was a good balance here.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I was expecting to see a lot of fights and pool scenes and everything.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 47:19[SPEAKER_01]: when it clicked for me that this is more about a dynamic that is more important than the fonts, spectacular things, I submitted to storytelling and I really enjoyed the end of it.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_01]: It was like this climatic thing, it was this sambas who, you know, flat thing for me in Mussenaling and I really really enjoyed it.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_01]: It was really nice.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, same here, I think it was very concise, you know, we got introduced with characters like if this was your first issue, we're going to introduce what the both characters are doing in this story, pretty quickly.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_00]: We got to see them mean, we got to see them fights, we got to see them resolve their fights, I've got to be end result.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_00]: of the command to go up late to go kill Wolverine.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_00]: So if I was very like satisfactory in that, like I didn't really need to go to another comic book to another issue rather, to see what was going on in the Westwood, what stuff it is and not ended it.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah,
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I really did like it, I think also just like I was staying with immortality and probably like people like vampire.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't vampire from the reason or with comforts that have immortality.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you can kind of go or out with like the fighting and the violence.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm only need to put too many parameters around that.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, bloody fights, one of them can go heal and they'll move on to my like nothing happened.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: So you need to think too much and just
- 48:42[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's really effective storytelling.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_03]: Mark is a really master storyteller.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't always get everything perfect.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_03]: I got Mark's body in mind.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_03]: But we get the brief flashback that references the characters.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_03]: And then Bladesang toward the end, like, we're pretty evenly matched.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_03]: And when you look at them, they are.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_03]: They have different skill sets, different powers, different histories.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_03]: But they're both of singular mind.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_03]: They both have been on this earth for many, many years.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_03]: They both use sharp weapons.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_03]: They're both hunters and predators.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_03]: They both...
- 49:07[SPEAKER_03]: resist authority as they like refuse to play by the rules.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_03]: They both basically call Maria Hill a fascist as she's enforcing the act.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_03]: More bias here almost feels a little bit forced in but it's a fun moment where blades hunting a vampire that's working for the the oppressive government.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's very effective.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_03]: I almost wish we got more in the flashback.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_03]: I wanted to see more of them interacting with the past.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_03]: But you know and then the the most memorable image outside the cover is just that really fugly vampire.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, which is, but I'm always grateful for friends, the talented friends who are willing to come take these journeys with me.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to be thinking about vampire stories all day now.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_03]: It's been delightful to join with the two of you.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any kind of final thoughts on vampires on Blade on this issue or the comparisons between the characters?
- 49:54[SPEAKER_03]: I was going to ask.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, do you think Wolverine saved him from the vampire fights at the end?
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: Or what was the ending going to be like?
- 50:03[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like there's an untold story there, but all we see is that Blade noticed Wolverine in the back and was like, oh, that guy that I was told was a vampire actually wasn't.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_03]: But then he found a real vampire, you know?
- 50:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, he was a cowboy hat and leather jacket and the vampire.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_03]: He was wearing it like that.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, as regards like final thoughts, I think it's just a very fun genre to look into in terms of vampires and in terms of blade and history.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_00]: There are always so many things you can do with these characters and like change and edit and it's like a scary overall.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of has just made me more interested in blade to see where this character is.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully that movie that has been mentioned was going to happen actually does happen.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: So we can see that's in the future.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_03]: We have this deep relationship with nostalgia, right?
- 50:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like we love seeing films from our youth brought back.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_03]: But Wesley Snipes is 63 now.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure what the same fun just did before.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like Martin can hide in storytelling.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: I remember that he was on Moonlight Black White on Blood.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: You should want, I think.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: He was the thought story.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: We were in the middle.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_01]: And when I got to his story, at first I was, what's his going on?
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: What, what am I reading?
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: And then I realized that it was doing something very interesting.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think he told the story backwards.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he was telling the story forward.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of like it's ten minutes.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: And you've seen the movie ten minutes, like this one.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it did something like that, which was very, like you did need to go that hard for Moonlight, but like you did need to go that hard.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_01]: And when I saw that, I was like, who is I have, I've had the name, I kind of, I have it, I know it's face, but when I read that, I'm like, wow, why?
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: This is so much, and I really really enjoyed that.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: So when you ask me to read this too, when I saw his name again, I'm like, oh yeah, I remember this name and I think it helped me also sort of me to the story quickly and like share us the question now like what happened in the past with the flashback where who ventured up to this tip, I kind of just threw my hands off like, okay, I don't care, let's just say that's I don't know.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_01]: finished story, but it helps the story that I'm in right now.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need the flashback to be like complete completely, but I kind of dream, you know, but I just let it go and I think it helped me enjoy the story one more.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like okay, there's this unfinished thing.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_01]: But for the character, looking through the characters lens with which it's played, he has his own complete story.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just a viewer and I'm lucky to see this, you know, to be shown to me.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I really like the storytelling here.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoyed how he connected from the beginning to the second act, to the resolution, just fantastic, just fantastic.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_03]: The title of the issue, again, is Vendetta's echo, which is interesting.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_03]: Vendetta is a feud between families.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_03]: It's Romeo and Juliet, right?
- 52:58[SPEAKER_03]: Like, someone has hurt someone so we get revenge on the other side.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_03]: But Vendetta can also mean like a series of attacks against people.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_03]: And this is the echo of Vendetta.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_03]: So Blade versus Vampires, Wolverine versus Blade, Blade versus the shield, Wolverine versus shield.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know exactly what the echo of which Vendetta was supposed to rock you guys in here.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, interesting title too, they will make me think for a bit.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I also wanted to ask if any of you had read like the fan mail at the end of the home being, I know the comic where a lot of people were very interested in like the red cons that had happened in the story and about playing from history.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was as very interesting seeing the passion that sometimes I imagine is a recent development
- 53:48[SPEAKER_00]: which there is but it was also quite interesting seeing sound let's us being very annoyed what some also being like loading marks work was that's very interesting that they may include it like this.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I suppose after the letters page there's two more pages of story that I completely neglected here.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_03]: In fact, when I sent you guys the PDF, I don't think I copied these.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_03]: So after Blade tells Maria Hill that Wolverine is off limits, we jump back to the past where that ugly vampire has pinned Blade all and Wolverine steps it.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry, I missed this because the letters Wolverine jumps in and slams the vampire against the wall and asks Blade for a state.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_03]: Blade pulls out the wooden steak, Wolverine steps the vampire in the heart and it fades away into nothing.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_03]: There's a bomb blade for just a moment.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_03]: Wolverine offers blade his coat.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's the blood loss.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_03]: He lost at least a piner to here.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_03]: Take my coat.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_03]: No problem, Bob.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_03]: Y'all owe me one.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_03]: And that's where we draw on the end.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_03]: I missed two pages because they were after the question of apologies.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_03]: So there is a resolution where the two have like a friendship that forms in the past.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_03]: You owe me a favorite.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_03]: The update is calling in the favor.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think this is kind of the perfect way to go with this podcast with like not knowing the ending and you telling us the ending of the like No, lovely.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think I hope I imagine
- 55:18[SPEAKER_00]: the leather ring could kind of was used as maybe blades iconic leather code.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_00]: So every that's what it's kind of what it's trying to say with this black Jimmy from Wolverine or something.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well yeah that's fun to fun to know about their relationship.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah that's a stronger ending than the one we assumed was there.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_03]: I don't mind any of them, too, really.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I think this ending, which he just read to us now, it helps more readers to feel satisfied, yes, yes.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I really don't mind any of them.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think he's done the work already, you know, before the latest page, like he's done the work, he shows that for the character.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you think about it just for the character, in his head, his story is complete.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_01]: The readers, we are looking for more, so really understand what he's had.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy if the character is like, I'm good, I'm okay, you know, I know what I have with Wolverine, you know, it's kind of long.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_01]: I know that story, you know, that act elsewhere, you know, I kind of, I like both it and it's actually.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_03]: It is an enormous joy to connect with both of you.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_03]: I appreciate friends who are willing to take a ride with me, like, oh, we're talking vampires, okay?
- 56:25[SPEAKER_03]: you're willing to spend time prepping and to record with me this morning it's excellent to see you both.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a enormous fan of both of your art and and can't wait to work with you again in the future.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any final thoughts?
- 56:37[SPEAKER_03]: Where can people find you online?

- 57:00[SPEAKER_01]: Now listen, just I love how you read comics.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_01]: I love your voice acting.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks well.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: actually do something maybe a podcast other than podcast where you just, you know, maybe do like, this is guys I should follow.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think, yeah, it was Wolverine.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, forgotten the name of the Sean YouTube.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_01]: It was just like on geostories about, you know, Wolverine's life and what's it was going through fantastic stuff.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_03]: When I do host regular script readings, but I always play the narrator.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: He can tell me the link, though, this is really the way you do.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you for mostly on Twitter.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: So on that's for AK, I don't really post two of them.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes I post just cool stuff, things that I really enjoy and people's artwork and maybe sometimes my artwork, where you can find me on Twitter.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: That's one that's got AK, thank you, thank you, thank you.

- 57:57[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, that's crazy.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, thank you.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_00]: Then your feeling is mutual.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_00]: I've been loving seeing your most recently like the storm from our RIT do.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_00]: It has been very like cool to see the story from another perspective like yours.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, same year.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much, Chad, for having us.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm for having me specifically.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_00]: It was lovely to kind of, again, and talk about this issue.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: I am on Instagram and Twitter with
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: the S-E-Y-E under school ART and I'm, like I said, currently working on the cages by Alexander Padlus and it comes out on, it's out currently on Webton, I think, well chapters are there and we're working on this into the Kickstarter which met its goal and yeah we're chatting to them too very soon so check for more updates there.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: Congratulations.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's a big deal.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_00]: I love it to me too.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_00]: We should firstly connect Greenwood like probably a mile away from each other.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, talented friends at the same city that makes me happy.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_03]: And everybody watched for my graphic novel coming on May as well.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_03]: We're getting close to release.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_03]: So Game Warman, the graphic novel will be released in May.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm looking forward to pushing more promotion there as well.
- 59:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, everybody.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much for listening.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for your ongoing support.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_03]: Please take care of yourselves.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_03]: Who knows what is happening in the world by February 20, 26.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_03]: But we're doing our great creative creating joy here.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see you all back here next week on The Great Balkan Lane Show.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_03]: And now stay tuned for some thoughts on fascism, as a special guest and I talked about a red skull story and its modern applications.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_03]: Profit was the constant throughline.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_03]: Across empires and regions, colonial rule was tied to the extraction of labor and resources, mineral wealth, rubber, timber, agricultural products, and infrastructure to move those commodities outward.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_03]: long before the 19th century partition, European demand for enslaved labor had already fueled the transatlantic, safe slave trade, kidnapping and transporting millions of Africans to the Americas.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_03]: And as the slave trade declined, many colonial economies continued coercive labor systems under different names.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_03]: The human costs were not incidental to the project, but built into it, violence forced labor, and the reduction of communities into units of production for distant markets.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_03]: Germany arrived late to the colonial scrabble, but carved out major holdings in the 1880s and 1890s, including German self-west Africa, now in Namibia, German East Africa, roughly Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, a Cameroon and Tololand.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_03]: administration leaned hard into coercion, settlers and officials used land seizure, forced labor, and racial hierarchy to secure control and output.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_03]: The most notorious example was in German Southwest Africa where colonial authorities waged brutal war against the Hararo and Nama tribes beginning in 1904, an episode widely recognized by historians as a genocide, involving mass killing displacements into the desert and deadly detention camps.
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_03]: In East Africa, German rule relied on harsh labor demands and violent suppression of resistance with uprising, such as the Maji-Majie rebellion from 1905-1907, being met with devastating force and famine-inducing policies.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_03]: When Germany lost World War I, those colonies were stripped away under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 and redistributed through the League of Nation mandates.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_03]: The material lost mattered, but the symbolic lost mattered even more.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_03]: Colonies had been sold to the German public as proof of national prestige and destiny.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_03]: So their removal fed an emotional narrative that Germany had been robbed, humiliated, and intentionally weakened by outsiders.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_03]: In the unstable years of the Vymar Republic, nationalist and extremist movements exploited this grievance, turning colonial loss into propaganda about betrayal and national rebirth.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_03]: That rhetoric didn't cause fascism by itself, but it became part of the broader fuel, already made grievance to be folded into revisionist politics, racial ideology, and the promise that a powerful New Germany would reclaim what had been taken.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_03]: That grievance sat in the background when the Second World War widened into North Africa.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_03]: In early 1941, Italy's position in Libya was collapsing after British offensives, and Hitler sent German forces to stabilize the front in Operation Sonnenbloom.
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_03]: The first units arrived in February 1941, and the deployment grew into the Doiches-Africa corpse, soon commanded in the field by Irwin Rahmel.
- 1:02:35[SPEAKER_03]: This, the desert war that followed mixed strategy, mobility, and supply desperation on a huge scale, but it also carried an old imperial shadow.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_03]: European armies fighting on African soil, treating the continent as a strategic prize, and a theater for power while local realities and histories were subordinated to someone else's war.
- 1:02:55[SPEAKER_03]: We're now jumping into a series that I don't like reading.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_03]: This is Black Panther, Captain America, flags of our fathers from the early 2000s.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_03]: This is a breakout story from priests at the Black Panther run, and it's a four-issue series talking about the first time Captain America and the father of the Black Panther met during World War II.
- 1:03:14[SPEAKER_03]: A very quick summary, as Captain America and the Howling Commandos helped the American War Front against the Nazis in Africa, the Red Skull that a horrible initiative to the hidden nation of Wakanda wanting to secure the resource of vibranium
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_03]: And the Red Skull goes super racist.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_03]: He orders his troops to attack, masterman, and warrior womaner there, as well as a bizarre 1940s Marvel character named Armless Tiger Man.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_03]: And they're killing African men after torturing them, all while saying horribly racist things.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's really awful, and it is written by a person of color, but that doesn't make it enjoyable to read.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_03]: He's working with the man who betrayed Wakanda, an African man in the pelt of his god.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_03]: The white gorilla, I go see my man ape episode with my friends on the Patreon.
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_03]: The war efforts continued as they fought the Americans and the Wakanda's both, and the Red Skull put himself in a massive tech suit, a body armor, in the end the Nazis get their asses kicked, and of course don't get the vibradium.
- 1:04:09[SPEAKER_03]: Wakanda goes back into hiding.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_03]: So, Retreat, Retcon Stories.
- 1:04:12[SPEAKER_03]: Here to talk about this crazy story with me is my friend Shaya Senyalu.
- 1:04:16[SPEAKER_03]: Shaya is wonderful to see you.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know how familiar with the Red Skull you are as a comic character, but are you are you a fan of this character?
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_00]: I tried not to be here again.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_00]: As regarding the red skull, not to familiar.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like it's a character that kind of pops in here, there in the history of Marvel, and around this kind of Dury's.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_00]: But not to familiar.
- 1:04:37[SPEAKER_00]: I just see him as this scary dictator looking character.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's frightening.
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_03]: Had you ever read the flags of our father's series before?
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_00]: This one, no, I haven't.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_00]: It wouldn't have to check like what when it was really, yeah, you said it was in the 2010.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_03]: So tell everybody a little about your experience reading this series.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_03]: It's a crazy journey in the world war, too.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was quite interesting to me, like going through it.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_00]: So starting it obviously, I realized the first time Black Panther met Cups America, right?
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_00]: And that was kind of the foundation of this story.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_00]: But then also discussing about how the like German soldiers
- 1:05:17[SPEAKER_00]: Wakanda for the right brain.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then I think also with the lens of the African-American soldier like being the person We're looking at the story through try to like bring up some perspective as to where culture was at that point in time Yeah, and she is referring she is referring to the Marvel character Gabriel Jones gave Jones who's the trumpet player from the Halloween Commandos and those old stories Who's gone on to have a pretty long legacy at Marvel?
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, really, I had no idea.
- 1:05:46[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, I thought it was a random question.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, there's an old series from the early 60s by some really famous artists that's like a spy series, Nick Fury agent of shield.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_03]: They go back and tell his World War II adventures in a series called Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos.
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_03]: And Gabe Jones is one of the cast of characters.
- 1:06:06[SPEAKER_03]: So he's the black soldier on the team.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_03]: He plays the trumpet in the, it has a bunch of adventures and World War II.
- 1:06:13[SPEAKER_03]: Interesting, interesting.
- 1:06:14[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I think it was, I can interesting choice to have that kind of sets up for this story.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, it was very uncomfortable reading through, just the way things were done, how people were speaking to each other.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, I think this was an actual story, it would be kind of how it will go regardless in terms of the words and the racism basically that was being done.
- 1:06:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think for me personally summarizing this whole series,
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's a bit personal to me, because obviously I'm an engineering illustrator, and this story is about like, invasions of African countries around this time, it was the UK by invasions of Nigeria and all like colonized Nigeria rather.
- 1:06:56[SPEAKER_00]: So there obviously things that I see and I kind of think about as to how it happened in real life in my own country.
- 1:07:04[SPEAKER_00]: So there are definitely some elements of it that are very, very uncomfortable.
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I think at the end of the day it was mostly just like a super heroist theory of people like fighting the bad guys And then cut the America being it's okay and like you're all right, where it's guy in this theory He didn't help being ours and stuff and then back on that ending up like respecting him at the end of the story I guess that's kind of where it's ultimately going to lead to really God lives for as a whole I don't know if it was the most necessary story to have but it was interesting to read
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_03]: It feels like an interesting narrative, and I think there's a lot of carefulness put into it, but it just, I don't think we would tell at the same way in 2025.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_03]: I think you can infer the brutality without showing it.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_03]: You can infer the racism without.
- 1:07:48[SPEAKER_03]: It almost seems like it's glorifying it with some of the Americans.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_03]: It makes it a lot of the African characters appear quite helpless and unable to do anything to protect themselves.
- 1:07:56[SPEAKER_03]: But then we opened with the history that I talked about too.
- 1:07:59[SPEAKER_03]: Now, the joining point for my American listeners, we don't often think about ourselves in this context, but the British Empire was going around and colonializing everything.
- 1:08:07[SPEAKER_03]: And that's the origin of the country that we ended up here through revolution.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_03]: But we also took it from others, right?
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_03]: And so that brief summary read at the beginning.
- 1:08:18[SPEAKER_03]: I worded it very carefully, but I understand how reductive it is because every tribe, every people, every village, every home, every family has their own story.
- 1:08:26[SPEAKER_03]: But hearing the way it's just kind of been divided up.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_03]: These empires come in and say, this is ours.
- 1:08:31[SPEAKER_03]: You belong to us and all your resources are now ours.
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_03]: And if you don't make the deal with us, then we're going to hurt you.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_03]: Like, those are such uncomfortable stories to reckon with, and such a relevant piece of our history.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's interesting to put it in the framework of World War II.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I feel like I'm the summary you gave on even just like reading through it.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think something that always stands out to me is when real life historical characters are in like
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_00]: Marvel stories, like just seeing Hitler in a comic book, but then there's also Captain America, a few pages afterwards.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's always a very interesting dynamic that I feel I was wondering is this okay to do from time?
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I'm still a bit unsure.
- 1:09:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like I wonder in 20 years will Donald Trump be like a popular comic like device to use for whatever happens in the next few years from now.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_03]: quite interesting like if he's he's on that list of like most hated people in the world and likely to be remembered as one of the most hated people in history but it's just it's embarrassing to be part of this country now we're living we're recording this everyone in early January but America just took the president of Venezuela and basically said okay you guys have to deal with us and only us now and also we're taking Greenland as like the latest news on in the international
- 1:09:54[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what to do.
- 1:09:55[SPEAKER_03]: And it's awful.
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_03]: And it's watching history repeat itself all over again.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_00]: Quite some set links, seeing like the past repeat itself.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_00]: So often in my life, I get it.
- 1:10:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:06[SPEAKER_03]: And then the mass agents in the street, calling themselves ice, it's gross.
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_03]: We got to talk a little bit in our last recording where we discussed Blade.
- 1:10:15[SPEAKER_03]: How are there's looking from over there?
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_03]: How are you fairing in this crazy climate these days?
- 1:10:20[SPEAKER_03]: You may adjust in general, like myself.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, just like well-being in the world, it's a hard time right now for folks, I think.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I feel like for me, I've been very typical, like, person of my age, just doomschooling all the time, like, seeing religious news and people's reactions, the interviews, the complete, like, gaslighting, that's one of these politics.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_00]: are doing and just wondering where the like lying is going to be drawn basically like how why is it going to keep on like going on and where do we end up and just if fear are to if were all just like helpless and to wait for things to end or it was anything that we can do obviously it seems quite hard but I guess it's my main mindset right now is just helpless
- 1:11:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's tricky and staying well and living joyfully and surrounding ourselves with love and embracing our talents are always with always that we're getting through I think looking at these stories from history this book that we looked at is 15 years old drawing on our telling stories about 70 years before that.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_03]: you know.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_03]: And as we're looking at history happening around us, I do think there's value for me and speaking truth and like letting things just be what they are and realizing how deeply all this runs in our comic books is also a really shocking realization sometimes because I have an X-Men show.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_03]: This is what the X-Men fight against all the time.
- 1:11:41[SPEAKER_03]: It's a little of take over on oppression.
- 1:11:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think something that this comic also brought up for me is the relationship between like African-Americans and Africans, too.
- 1:11:53[SPEAKER_00]: Just having gay be this person, recognizing what it is to be in a society for the people who look like him, but you know circumstances
- 1:12:02[SPEAKER_00]: it's how they make them not be together and then just that dynamic.
- 1:12:06[SPEAKER_00]: If he's secretly hates them or if it's like if it's secretly wants to be them or if it's just it's finding the current relationship.
- 1:12:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's something that we also observe in our current like day like diaspora like war sometimes.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's also just interesting seeing this comic.
- 1:12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, it was written by a person of color.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was a black question.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure.
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:12:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's Reggie Hudland.
- 1:12:29[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's original Hudland who writes a lot of comics and some of them are uncomfortable.
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_03]: It's like there's a lot of patriarchal thinking in his writing, and a lot of willing interests.
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_03]: So deep brutality.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like you said, very true, it was very brutal this comic as well.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_00]: But basically, I think from his own perspective, being an African American, I'm sure he also has that relationship with Africa, like what's people who have grown up in society just hold in black people are and the history of nuts.
- 1:13:00[SPEAKER_03]: The artist Dennis Cowan is also African-American.
- 1:13:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:13:04[SPEAKER_03]: It is good to see every element working on this book at least, yeah.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I really like this style too.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_00]: But in general, I think very interesting.
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_00]: I will not be sure.
- 1:13:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you said, it's cool.
- 1:13:17[SPEAKER_00]: Be within the same way.
- 1:13:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think some parts of it are necessary in terms of just how, like I said, the dynamic between diaspora and government to the word.
- 1:13:27[SPEAKER_00]: The diaspora is the Africa diaspora is, and I think it's like that's what I took the most from this because at the end of the comic or the series, get a band Black Panther had something to talk about, even up at him, to the ship in Wakanda.
- 1:13:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I like that part of it.
- 1:13:42[SPEAKER_00]: On the rest of it, the masterman, warrior woman, part, people, Nazi imagery, very uncomfortable for me.
- 1:13:50[SPEAKER_00]: And in terms of role being, I think like he said, just doing things that make us happy and, you know, surrounding ourselves with people who we love and just like making the most of what we have now, because we know to keep what's going to be in the case, but it comes in the future.
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's literally all we can do.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, both to, I guess,
- 1:14:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, we make a difference.
- 1:14:13[SPEAKER_03]: One of my things I really push forward is creation of joy, in creation of community, right?
- 1:14:18[SPEAKER_03]: I can't change the big picture, but I can definitely defend people and let them know they are safe and take care of my neighbors and and advocate, you know.
- 1:14:26[SPEAKER_03]: Forever grateful for this show.
