- 0:05I don' t have many memories about my childhood and, to tell you
- 0:09the truth, I don' t remember much of my adolescence either. However,
- 0:13without a doubt, the memory that will always accompany me is that of
- 0:17when I was only fifteen years old, a memory that will remain with me
- 0:22until the last day of my life. I grew up in a village several
- 0:25hours from the city that he was a place full of culture, customs and
- 0:30beautiful traditions. Without a doubt, this was the perfect place to raise your
- 0:34children if you had them. I would have loved to have the opportunity to
- 0:39do so, as this one was quite safe. What I remember the most
- 0:43that characterized this site was the immense superstition that its inhabitants had, the stories
- 0:49and legends about witches, Nahuales, the devil and goblins were quite frequent in
- 0:55meetings with friends or stories that your grandparents told. Personally, those legends were
- 1:00for me the best in the world. There was no legend or story that
- 1:04I didn' t know right and wrong, as since I was a child
- 1:10I had shown a lot of interest together with my friends, with whom I
- 1:15always tried to find new legends in the village, which, in fact,
- 1:19for my fortune, were quite varied. But without a doubt, there was
- 1:21a story that stood out above all of them. This was the legend of
- 1:26the faceless, which was, moreover, the favorite among children and adults.
- 1:32It counted the existence of a being as tall as a tree, which was
- 1:36also inhumanly thin and if this were not enough, the face of that being
- 1:41was nonexistent. The stories about his origin were divided into that he was a
- 1:47henchman of the same demon. Others told that this was a shaman who had
- 1:53fallen a horrible curse after experimenting with black magic. Although no one agreed on
- 2:00the origin of the faceless, one thing was if it was safe and everyone
- 2:05in the village could swear that the faceless was real. There was no older
- 2:09person in the village who did not say that he had seen him on the
- 2:15hill, even my father, who was a skeptic, claimed to have seen
- 2:20him sinking into the weeds and losing himself in the darkness of the hill on
- 2:23a night of Neblina when he returned from cutting wood. All those sightings had
- 2:29something in common, and this was that no one, absolutely no one had
- 2:32seen the creature face to face. Everyone claimed to have seen her far from
- 2:38her back or getting lost in the weeds of the hill. In the same
- 2:42way, they said that the face would be the last thing you would see,
- 2:46since it would just rip your face off. Being a child, I
- 2:50believed in each and every one of those stories. However, the more all
- 2:54those stories grew, the more they began to do something ridiculous and pointless to
- 3:00me. I courageously boasted that I had gone to the hill thousands of times
- 3:05and that on all my visits I had never seen anything like that creature.
- 3:10I was talking about it with my group of friends, who were Paolo.
- 3:15He was the youngest in the group. All I remember about him is his
- 3:19curly, black hair. So was Stephen from him. The only thing I
- 3:23could remember was that he wore thick glasses and finally, there was Antonio.
- 3:28I remember everything about him was taller than me. It had hazelnut eyes and
- 3:32thick brown hair. He had been the one who had gotten me into the
- 3:38group of friends, so of all of them it was the one I was
- 3:40closest to. It was early in December, when Antonio came back from visiting
- 3:46relatives in the city and had become obsessed with a TV show. Antonio wasn
- 3:53' t very good at explaining anything, but he could explain enough to convince
- 3:58us to create our own paranormal event show. Although to tell you the truth,
- 4:03I' m not sure if a lot of kids could be called paranormal
- 4:08cho by recording and taking photographs with a very old phone, which had a
- 4:13terrible resolution. The idea was pretty simple. Some acquaintances told a legend that
- 4:18they claimed to have experienced. We would go to the scene if we boasted
- 4:24of denying it. That seemed to be entertaining for a while until Antonio Borrido
- 4:30had a good idea. He had been trying for days to convince us to
- 4:36go all night to the hill for the sole purpose of denying that story of
- 4:42the faceless. I wasn' t very sure about it, and it wasn
- 4:46' t because I believed in those stories, but at night on that hill
- 4:50the last thing we had to worry about was finding that strange creature. Even
- 4:56so, most of the group were convinced by Antonio and, like every teenager,
- 5:00the last thing I wanted was for my friends to think I was scary,
- 5:05so we all convinced our parents that we would spend the night at Antonio
- 5:10' s house and Antonio, for his part, said he would stay at
- 5:14my house. With those cuts we went to the hill where, to be
- 5:18frank, nothing interesting happened during the first hours for that expedition, Antonio had
- 5:26obtained a better phone so that this way. This way, according to having
- 5:30to document, we spent such a quiet time than everyone. There we almost
- 5:35forgot the real purpose of that excursion. After stopping to rest a bit,
- 5:42Antonio began to see the photographs taken during the trip. The surprise of all
- 5:47was great when he showed us as in one of the photographs, although a
- 5:53little blurry could be seen in the form of an extremely tall and inhumanly thin
- 6:00man of that discovery. Many of us tried to give him a logical explanation,
- 6:05things like that were trees, which, because of their branches, simulated
- 6:09that silhouette an effect of light. Or it could just be that that phone
- 6:15just hadn' t really focused what that was and we were just imagining things.
- 6:23But those explanations were not enough to convince Antonio, who proposed returning exactly
- 6:28to the point where the creature was supposed to be in photography at first we
- 6:33all refused. We were tired of so much walking and telling the truth it
- 6:40was not as if we were really interested in denying or validating the existence of
- 6:45that creature. But Antonio, who never accepted not yet as an answer,
- 6:48insisted so much that we finally gave in to return once in the place.
- 6:54Antonio began to take as many photographs as he could we did a recreation of
- 7:00the moment when it was taken and even Antonio came to demand the creature to
- 7:03seem if it really existed. Fortunately for everyone, he soon gave up all
- 7:10that and seeing that very soon we would be covered at night, he decided
- 7:15that we should look for a place to sleep once the tents were up,
- 7:21we were sitting around a campfire, talking about trivialities and telling stories of terror.
- 7:28By that time, even Antonio seemed to have relaxed and left the issue
- 7:32of the faceless sideways. I remember getting a little away from everyone to pee
- 7:38and while I was at my thing, I heard a strange sound. It
- 7:43didn' t seem like any noise I' d heard before. It was
- 7:46very similar to that of rustling bones, but in a distant way and at
- 7:50the same time, it was almost as if this happened right above me.
- 7:55I tried to better match my view to the darkness of the night. However,
- 7:59as much as I tried, the only different thing I could notice was
- 8:03him. As the branches of some trees moved in the opposite direction to the
- 8:07wind it was almost as if someone or something pushed them in the opposite direction.
- 8:13However, I decided to downplay it. After all this could be due
- 8:18to animals, so I decided to go back to my friends and not mention
- 8:22anything about it. After all, the last thing I wanted was to give
- 8:26Antonio the idea back. The rest of the night was great. It'
- 8:33s bedtime. I would share the store with Antonio, while Esteban and Paolo
- 8:37would share the other. When I was about to fall deeply asleep, I
- 8:43felt as my friend began to move insistently, until I finally answered him to
- 8:48leave me alone. This one just silenced me and pointed tremblingly outside the tent.
- 8:56Completely sleepy. I looked where I was pointing. That' s when
- 9:01I looked at the silhouette of what looked like a giant spider. However,
- 9:05once my brain was able to fully awaken, I knew that it could not
- 9:09be a spider, as it seemed to have only four limbs, which were
- 9:16extremely thin. I looked at Antonio, who, despite the darkness, could
- 9:20see his face of terror. I was trying to find an explanation for everything
- 9:26that was going on. As I saw that silhouette I walked on all fours
- 9:31all over the place. For a moment I seemed to hear that I was
- 9:35stirring up the food and candy works that we had forgotten around the campfire.
- 9:41A part of me wanted to convince himself that once he saw that there was
- 9:45nothing to feed himself, just as he had arrived in the same way,
- 9:48he would leave taking Antonio' s hand in the dark trying to convince me
- 9:54that it was to reassure him, although the reality was that I was looking
- 10:00for that tranquility from him. For my luck, you also seemed to need
- 10:03that comfort so he pressed my hand hard and could almost swear that he was
- 10:09praying quietly. I did not know until that day that Antonio knew so many
- 10:15prayers, but to some extent those prayers also helped me to calm down.
- 10:20That only worked for brief moments before we both heard Paolo and were screaming.
- 10:26Those screams still pierce my soul. Every time I remember them, they were
- 10:31screams of deep terror These screams made my whole body tremble and didn' t
- 10:37allow me to think beyond that this creature was none other than the faceless one,
- 10:43that Paolo and Esteban had been their victims and soon, Antonio and I
- 10:48would be next. To my luck, Antonio was able to pull me out
- 10:52of that trance, holding me very tightly and pulling me out of the tent.
- 10:58Once the light of the moon was in a hurry, that creature,
- 11:03which was on its back just towards the tent of my friends, of whom
- 11:07they shouted and begged for help. Fear increased within my being even breathing was
- 11:15becoming difficult. That' s when in pain I watched the creature turn straight
- 11:22towards us. Seeing the creature was almost as if his eyes Nose and Mouth
- 11:28had been permanently sealed by a layer of skin. It was certainly an alarming
- 11:33scene that made my whole body shudder. I couldn' t even notice when
- 11:39that horrible being drew his bony hand to my face and noticed it until I
- 11:43felt a burning just in the middle of it. That was a pain that
- 11:48seemed almost like my skin burned for my luck, Antonio pulled me away before
- 11:52I could do the same. With the rest of my face. We ran
- 11:58away. I realized that neither one of us had shoes until we got to
- 12:01a road full of stones and with the creature behind us. Falling back was
- 12:07not an option. It was painful to just support one foot, but the
- 12:13fear of fearing that creature behind you was certainly enough incentive to continue. I
- 12:18felt my feet bleed and I could still hear the creature, which was strange,
- 12:24as it had no face. Antonio seemed to affect this more than me,
- 12:28as he tripped and hit his head very hard, leaving him stunned.
- 12:33For my part, I tried to drag him. My feet hurt, just
- 12:37like my hands hurt because of the cold. I saw Antonio bleed at the
- 12:41same time as I saw the weeds move. As the creature approached, I
- 12:46could hear it ever closer to me. Antonio was beginning to tremble. I
- 12:50had no idea what to do, so I made the decision to quit.
- 12:56When I did. I could almost swear that I heard the creature laugh even
- 13:01though it might well be my fault alone, which at that moment I was
- 13:07eating as much as I am now. The pain of leaving him behind was
- 13:09more intense, even than the pain in my feet, which were already quite
- 13:15bloody. I have no idea how much I ran after leaving my friend,
- 13:20but I didn' t stop until I ran into a man, who was
- 13:24cutting firewood, which didn' t happen until the first rays of the sun
- 13:28began to appear. His feet were practically torn down the road, but none
- 13:33of that mattered at the time. I remember very little of the way back
- 13:39to town. All I remember is that the man put me on his donkey
- 13:43while I was wondering what had happened to my eye. I was taken to
- 13:46the hospital in the next town to attend to my wounds, as there was
- 13:52not enough equipment there to attend to all these. After hours there was a
- 13:56thorough search to find my friends, but Paolo Ya and Esteban were able to
- 14:01reach their homes without problem and later they could find Antonio. He was fainted
- 14:07with blood on his head and was quickly taken to the hospital to treat his
- 14:11wounds. All of us count what happened to us. We told everyone that
- 14:16we had seen the faceless and most of us didn' t believe that situation
- 14:22changed me enough. I stopped talking to my friends, because they blamed me
- 14:26for what had happened to Antonio. My parents decided it would be better if
- 14:31I moved in with an aunt. I' ve been in therapy several times,
- 14:37and yet, nightmares have never left. I' d like to say
- 14:41that ended there. Healing wounds from the past is usually comforting. It'
- 14:45s already admirable for some people, but for me it wasn' t exactly
- 14:50what I expected. After my mother' s death, I was forced to
- 14:54return to the village where I grew up. I still remember how I left
- 14:58that place swearing never to miss again. Despite the passing of the years.
- 15:03A lot of people could still recognize me. After my mother' s funeral,
- 15:07I took some things from the house that were important to her and decided
- 15:13to leave that town. As I left town, I had to pass almost
- 15:16on the shore of that horrible hill and to some extent tried to convince myself
- 15:22of what the psychologist had told me. The idea that everything happened had been
- 15:26nothing but my imagination anonymous account
