- 1:04Welcome to the around the House show, your trusted source for everything about your home.
- 1:08Thanks for joining me today.
- 1:10You're great to see you.
- 1:11And Shelby, nice to meet you as well.
- 1:14Yeah, it's so great to meet you guys.
- 1:16I'm happy to be here.
- 1:18So tell us a little bit before we get.
- 1:19Let's build a story behind you here.
- 1:21Tell us a little about.
- 1:22About the Neat Freak.
- 1:24I like that name.
- 1:25Yeah.
- 1:25Thank you.
- 1:26I am the original Neat freak.
- 1:28That's definitely the name.
- 1:30Was intentional.
- 1:30I am a neat freak.
- 1:32I always have been.
- 1:33I grew up that my idea of fun when I was a kid was redoing my room and cleaning.
- 1:39Neat Freak.
- 1:40It's truly in the name.
- 1:41I always make the joke.
- 1:42Mom, weren't you concerned?
- 1:43Should I have gone to therapy?
- 1:45Is that normal for a kid?
- 1:47I don't know.
- 1:48But it's funny, looking back now, it makes complete sense.
- 1:51So I went.
- 1:54I was never the kid that knew what she wanted to do.
- 1:56I wasn't like, I want to be a firefighter when I grow up.
- 1:58I just had no idea.
- 2:01And so when I was going to college and choosing a major, I was like, maybe interior design.
- 2:06I like homes.
- 2:06I like house stuff.
- 2:08Maybe real estate.
- 2:09Maybe I'm just going to work in marketing and business.
- 2:12And so I was always advised to go kind of towards the business route.
- 2:16And so I did that.
- 2:18And even through up until my last year in college, I was like, hey, guys, still don't know what to do.
- 2:23Everyone told me I'd find my way, but at the time, I was kind of just organizing along the way and making my book and bar money some extra cash.
- 2:32In college, I was like, this is fun.
- 2:34Get to organize people's stuff, and they're paying me some money for it.
- 2:37And so when I graduated, I kind of decided it was during the pandemic.
- 2:41This was 2020.
- 2:42I was like, what am I doing with my life right now?
- 2:45I'm not gonna go sit in an office and be stuck in a marketing firm to just get laid off or sent home in a couple months.
- 2:51So I was like, I'm just gonna.
- 2:52Give it a year.
- 2:53We're gonna give it a year.
- 2:54Make a business plan, do everything I learned in college and paid a lot of money for, and let's just see where it goes.
- 3:00And after a year, I had.
- 3:03It was just.
- 3:05I immediately felt like I was like, in on the right path.
- 3:08And about a year and some change, I ended up partnering with the Container Store here in Sacramento and became their in home organizer for that store.
- 3:17And it just.
- 3:17Everything just kind of was falling into place as neatly as it could, and so I just ran with it.
- 3:22And so I started my team.
- 3:23It was just me for about a year and a half or so.
- 3:26And then I was like, shoot, this is a lot of work.
- 3:28I can't do this by myself.
- 3:29And hired a assistant organizer who was my best friend, still best friend, drug her her along on jobs, and we had a lot of fun.
- 3:37And then I was like, okay, this is serious.
- 3:39I can't just have my best friend at work.
- 3:41I gotta hire a team.
- 3:42And so just one step at a time evolved to what it is now.
- 3:45So now our home base is Sacramento, California, but we.
- 3:49I grew up in the Central Valley where Wendy's located, so we also have a team there.
- 3:54Naturally, it just kind of evolved.
- 3:56Lots of referrals and whatnot, just from family and friends.
- 3:59And then it turned into a great team down there.
- 4:01So, yeah, the two teams, Sacramento, Central Valley.
- 4:03And so we service a big chunk of Northern California.
- 4:08That's cool.
- 4:09That's cool.
- 4:10That is, for me, one of my hardest.
- 4:12That's probably the biggest thing I struggle with.
- 4:14We were talking before the show is my adhd.
- 4:18It's organized in my head of where things are, but somebody can walk into my office and go, that's a hot mess.
- 4:24But if you went, where's that paper?
- 4:26I know exactly where it is.
- 4:28It's just not socially acceptable.
- 4:31Yeah, yeah, that's fair.
- 4:34That is fair.
- 4:35I think there are a lot of things that we have a lot of clients who also have adhd, adhd, even family.
- 4:41I have one family that we do some home management for where the whole family has severe adhd.
- 4:46They're all on medication, and they're very open about that.
- 4:49And they.
- 4:50It's not about bending the rules.
- 4:52It's not about you teaching yourself to become this organized person.
- 4:56It's about finding solutions that work for how your brain works.
- 4:59So it's a lot of drop baskets and throwing things in bins and having things just kind of in your.
- 5:04Your world, what makes sense.
- 5:06But still having things zoned.
- 5:09But it's going to be so different in your home than it is.
- 5:11And someone who doesn't have ADHD and thinks completely differently.
- 5:16But that's just like in design, you're creating a custom space for that family and that person.
- 5:21It's the same way in organizing, you have to cater it to that family or the person or whomever.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:29I work with organizers myself.
- 5:31Right.
- 5:31It doesn't work if it doesn't make sense in my head.
- 5:34Otherwise, it's just, okay, we did that and then I go, three.
- 5:37One more thing we feel guilty about.
- 5:39Like, yeah, yeah.
- 5:40I didn't put it in the basket.
- 5:41Totally slapping your hand.
- 5:45Yeah, totally.
- 5:46Yeah.
- 5:47I always say we're not.
- 5:48We don't just put things in bends and label them.
- 5:49It truly is creating a system hugely important.
- 5:55Yeah.
- 5:55I mean, sorry, Eric.
- 5:57I only say it because.
- 5:59Because I'm horribly unstructured.
- 6:01Right.
- 6:01I'm chaos Master because the ideas pour out faster than I can keep up them.
- 6:07And so the desktop on my Mac looks like the solar system.
- 6:12And my downloads file has this many screenshots.
- 6:16I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 6:17Documents everywhere.
- 6:19Absolute chaos.
- 6:20I love it.
- 6:21And in trying to dial that in and be more effective and be more hygienic about it, now that we have robots that will just build this stuff for me, I'm like, I need my little command center that has
- 6:30this button here and this thing here and that thing here.
- 6:32And it makes sense here.
- 6:34And it.
- 6:34The difference is incredible.
- 6:36I'm like, whoa.
- 6:36I'm like, almost organized.
- 6:38What happened, Shelby?
- 6:42It's exactly that.
- 6:43It's.
- 6:43And it's funny.
- 6:44It took a robot to teach me that, like, we need to build this for you.
- 6:49And I'm like, oh, well, that's instead of me trying to fit into, you know, Microsoft's Office center or whatever.
- 6:58Yeah.
- 6:58It's a great square peg, round hole.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:00It's the only way it works, just like you said.
- 7:02Yeah.
- 7:03So, Wendy, how did you get working with Shelby on this?
- 7:05I gotta hear this story.
- 7:06So did you have a client that you're like, oh, my gosh, we gotta fix this.
- 7:09How do we fix this?
- 7:10I need help.
- 7:11Used to think that I could design someone tidy.
- 7:17So I walked into a house and immediately just feel like I had to get out.
- 7:24Like, I had a panic because they.
- 7:29Their everyday life was not calm or clean or pretty or any of the things that make me feel good.
- 7:39And so then I would design rooms that I thought would corral their papers or do this or do that or whatever.
- 7:49And I Failed terribly over and over again.
- 7:54And there was a gal who was working with me at the time, and she goes, wendy, they're a messy.
- 8:00You can't help them, okay?
- 8:04Which is not really fair because I think, like you guys just said, you think of.
- 8:09You think about things differently.
- 8:12You have different processes.
- 8:13It works out differently in your mind.
- 8:16So I finally admitted defeat that I could not design someone tiny.
- 8:21And I had seen Shelby's things come through on my Instagram.
- 8:28And she looks really nice and kind, but also not a pushover, not somebody that one of my clients could convince to do something that she didn't think was right, that she could hold her ground.
- 8:44And so I called her, I think, or I messaged her.
- 8:49I remember asking you.
- 8:50I respect Shelby very much because she can go into a space and is unbothered.
- 8:56It does not affect her.
- 9:01I am.
- 9:03I go into a space, and I am affected by spaces, by people, by tone, by.
- 9:09I'm a very highly sensitive person that tries very hard not to let anyone know that because I feel like could go one way or the other.
- 9:19But I follow Shelby in, and I'm okay because she has that part handled.
- 9:27And so I know that if I can get her in now, I get her in on the beginning of projects.
- 9:34Shelby, can you help me with this client's master closet?
- 9:38Shelby, this client is a gourmet chef, but does not have any organization, and it bothers them and it bothers me.
- 9:46Can you please work with me and with the cabinet guy to make sure this is perfect?
- 9:50Shelby, can you help me with this playroom?
- 9:52I've actually had clients say, oh, my.
- 9:54Gosh, Wendy, I so want you to do my kids room.
- 9:56Be so much fun.
- 9:57I'm like, I don't do that.
- 9:58You need to call Shelby.
- 10:01That's not for me.
- 10:03I am not serving the client well if I go in and do their kids bedroom.
- 10:07But Shelby will.
- 10:08I mean, I can help find some cute little things and pick out fabrics and colors, but sounds like it the right way.
- 10:16So it's great because she's now an integral part of our work around the house.
- 10:21We'll be right back with Shelby Cornette from Neat Freak as we continue to get organized.
- 10:30But kids these days will never understand.
- 12:15What it's like to play an instrument,.
- 12:18To be in a band.
- 12:21What's up?
- 12:21This is Sticks it In Ya and.
- 12:23Satchel from Steel Panther.
- 12:25And you are listening to around the.
- 12:28House with Eric G.
- 12:30Yeah, we love.
- 12:31Eric G.
- 12:32And you should too.
- 12:351987.
- 12:38Welcome back to the around the House.
- 12:39Show.
- 12:40To find out more about us, head to aroundthehouse online.com and make sure you subscribe to our podcast.
- 12:47Now let's return to the conversation with Shelby Cornette from Neat Freak as we continue to get organized.
- 12:54But Shelby will, I mean, I can help find some cute little things and pick out fabrics and colors, but sounds like it the right way.
- 13:03So it's great because she's now an integral part of our work.
- 13:07And I would say she's probably worked now on over 15 different clients projects in the last three or four years.
- 13:16Nice.
- 13:17We love a Wendy project like that,.
- 13:19Where I've gone in.
- 13:20I'm not affected by them at all, Wendy.
- 13:22But it's one of those things that I've walked in and I'm like, we need to deal with this organizational problem because we can't start a project in here.
- 13:32There is no way that if we design out a kitchen and do a kitchen or kitchen or bathroom or whatever in this space, it's going to take them years just to get it cleaned out so we can start.
- 13:43How do we do this?
- 13:44And it was, I ran into more than one house that should have been on that Hoarders TV show where, holy smokes, how do you get in the door?
- 13:53And I was talking about one that, that I did.
- 13:56Oh, this was probably 10, probably least 10 to 12 years ago.
- 14:02And it was up in Seattle, nice lady, she was just retiring and wanted me to come in and take a look.
- 14:07And she, I, you know, knock on the door.
- 14:10Nice.
- 14:10Probably at the time, it was probably a million dollar house north of Seattle.
- 14:14Walked in, she opens the door and I'm like, holy smokes.
- 14:19And this was a weird one.
- 14:21Everything was, I mean, I'm six foot tall.
- 14:23It was, I couldn't see across the room very easily.
- 14:26I was up on my tippy toes in the entryway just to see.
- 14:30And there was two paths.
- 14:31There was kind of this single track path that went to the kitchen in this single track path that went to the bedrooms and bathrooms.
- 14:39And it was 10 inches wide, 12 inches wide top.
- 14:43So it was just kind of trying to go through there.
- 14:47But the strangest point to me was though, is that she had these perfectly laid out curio cabinets on the wall that were lit that had probably 3,000 of the same Siamese cat figurines that were all perfectly organized in
- 15:06the glass.
- 15:07And then the dining room looked like a zoo display because she had vaulted ceilings in it.
- 15:11There was 12ft of glass in the ultimate cat play structure that was perfectly organized.
- 15:17And I walked In I went, okay, I'm not mentally ready for this.
- 15:21This is wild.
- 15:23From.
- 15:24From the door opening, I was gonna ask how many cats were there?
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30And the answer was, probably close to.
- 15:3112, but they were living a better life than she was.
- 15:35And.
- 15:36And the ironic part was she's.
- 15:38It seemed like a germ freak because she turns around and goes, do you mind taking your shoes off before you came in?
- 15:43And I went, no.
- 15:44OSHA regulations.
- 15:45I'm at work.
- 15:46I have to wear my boots in here.
- 15:48I can't take them off.
- 15:49I'm sorry.
- 15:50And she goes, oh, okay.
- 15:52I have some booties in the car.
- 15:53And I put booties on to keep my boots from catching what I was at in there.
- 15:57So.
- 15:59Oh, man.
- 16:00Organizers come in, and they're like, you need abc.
- 16:02It's math, right?
- 16:03It is this math trick.
- 16:05And she already nailed it on the first sentence that came out about the human psychology piece of that and creating systems that work for that specific person.
- 16:15And I'm watching me describe the cat lady, and I'm watching her just go, huh?
- 16:18Yep.
- 16:18Of course, she had, you know, a million Siamese figurines.
- 16:22Of course.
- 16:23What Makes sense.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:25But she's the only one, though, out of all the my 33 or 34 years of doing design work on that, that.
- 16:31On those kind of projects, which would filter in every few years, that she was the only one that I came back after she made room for the.
- 16:39We did kitchen.
- 16:40We did new countertops in her bathroom.
- 16:42And I said, well, you're gonna have to work on that kitchen.
- 16:45She goes, oh, I retire in a couple months.
- 16:46By next year, I'll have it ready.
- 16:48And she went in a year from having things at 6 foot 6 and a half feet tall to maybe 12, 15, 18 inches and had her countertops cleaned off so we could do countertops.
- 16:58And I was like, wow.
- 17:00Without help.
- 17:01She actually got it dialed in, which I think was impressive, because most people at that spot really need a family of people around them to get that pulled off.
- 17:13Organization, mental health care, dealing with stuff that whatever trauma in their life has got them into that situation.
- 17:21Shelby.
- 17:22It's gotta be tough dealing with that many layers with some clients.
- 17:26In that case, if I would have walked into that home, I wouldn't have turned her down as a client, because I'm like, ew, this is gross.
- 17:32There's too much here.
- 17:33I would have had a very open and honest conversation with her of, how ready are you for this?
- 17:38Because I can tell you if you're living like that, you have some sort of blockage that you need to talk to someone about until you actually get to the point where we're like, actually gonna declutter and work your
- 17:50way through this.
- 17:50Because I can almost guarantee you she did not get rid of that stuff.
- 17:55It's probably.
- 17:56And maybe she did, but if I had to guess, it's in a storage unit, it's in a garage, it's a shed, it's under the beds and closets and anything in your home when you're doing home improvements, hiring interior
- 18:08designer, hiring a professional organizer, it's an investment.
- 18:12And it's not just about making the buck for me.
- 18:14I care about our clients and the project and the end result.
- 18:19It's my reputation.
- 18:20It's our teen's reputation.
- 18:22So I would have had that conversation and just told her, I don't think you're ready for this, and I'm not going to let you waste your money having us come and shuffle stuff around for you.
- 18:30You have to be in such a good mental place to be ready to get rid of stuff, regardless if you have a hoarding disease or not.
- 18:37You just have to be mentally ready.
- 18:40Yeah, I doubt she was a good point.
- 18:43And.
- 18:43And that's why she's part of the show.
- 18:45Wendy.
- 18:46She's one of us.
- 18:47She's, like, not there to get a check.
- 18:48I'm actually there to help people.
- 18:49Oh.
- 18:50Listen.
- 18:50I try so hard in to the headspace of my clients so that I can deliver a home that they really love.
- 19:00But that also means I have to be a safe person for them.
- 19:05I have to be a person they can say anything to.
- 19:09And so I can't be the person who says, you must do this, this, and this.
- 19:14We're going to throw this away or we're going to give this away or we're going to.
- 19:17And Shelby doesn't say you have to, but, like, she does have to be tough.
- 19:21You know, I mean, there's.
- 19:23It's tough love.
- 19:24So she can play that role for me and do that for me so that I can maintain the relationship that I have with my clients where they do feel safe and can tell me anything.
- 19:36Even sometimes their opinions about how things are going with Shelby, they're not responding to Shelby.
- 19:41They're.
- 19:42They have a resistance to the change.
- 19:44Yeah, that's the thing, too.
- 19:46That's the key right there.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48And it's.
- 19:49And I was so thankful that Shelby understands that and she's willing to take on that role in my professional life and the lives of my clients, because I really do need her in many instances to help people break
- 20:06through whatever's going on.
- 20:07And once they experience the relief of just doing one spot with Shelby, because that is the thing, you come home, it's beautiful, it makes sense, and you're like, whoa, bad as something.
- 20:21Once you get that feeling, then you want more.
- 20:24It's like an addiction.
- 20:26But you have to get them to the point where they'll allow that.
- 20:30And she's designer contractor.
- 20:33Same thing.
- 20:34If you don't understand the human twist to all of these positions, you're missing the boat.
- 20:41There's plenty of jokes out there, but you're not doing yourself or anybody else any favors unless you understand that.
- 20:48And I think Shelby nailed it.
- 20:49My reward was not the check.
- 20:51It was watching somebody cry in their new kitchen.
- 20:53Around the House.
- 20:54We'll be right back with Shelby Cornette from Neat Freak as we continue to get organized.
- 23:13Welcome back to the around the House show.
- 23:15To find out more about us, head to aroundthehouse online.com and make sure you subscribe to our podcast.
- 23:22Now let's return to the conversation with Shelby Cornette from Neat Freak as we continue to get organized.
- 23:28Well, Shelby, I've noticed with that TV show I think everybody's seen out there, that hoarder show, it is just, to me, semi cruel to take people that are probably needing a lot of therapy to work through the issues,
- 23:44and they're just fairly brutally going, we got two days to do this.
- 23:50And to me, I kind of watch that show and go, I understand what you're trying to do.
- 23:55They've let it get to that point.
- 23:56But you're making interesting television for some people.
- 24:00But at the same point, it kind of makes my heart cry a little bit for these people because they're getting shoved into a situation that maybe was going to happen anyway, but the TV cameras are there to grab
- 24:10it.
- 24:11And it's semi unfortunate.
- 24:13I think it also shows the hopelessness of that situation as well as if people would have gotten involved earlier, whether it's family members or community members or anything else like that, that these people could have gotten help earlier
- 24:28and not gotten into that situation.
- 24:31Yeah, it is really sad.
- 24:33I don't love that show.
- 24:35A lot of people refer to it, and I think it's just like TV in general.
- 24:40It's produced, and so it's for the storyline, and that's why it's so.
- 24:46I think the.
- 24:47I haven't seen that show in years.
- 24:48I haven't watched TLC anything in, like a million years, but they.
- 24:52I learned channel yeah, yeah.
- 24:56No crazy.
- 24:57But I think I remember it being like, the city is going to come and evict you from your home.
- 25:02We got to clean it.
- 25:03You're going to get kicked out, whatever.
- 25:05And so they would strip them from the home, pull everything out, have them then look at their stuff.
- 25:09Like that was going to change their mind about the items and then set their home back up with a few of their things to make it feel like it was home.
- 25:16But the huge.
- 25:18And I think that they would bring on a therapist for that.
- 25:21I think that there's so much more to it than just bringing a therapist to say, it's okay, don't worry, it's just stuff.
- 25:28No.
- 25:28There is something chemically wrong in their brains that they need to probably be on some sort of.
- 25:34And I'm not a doctor, obviously, but on some sort of medication and have intense therapy.
- 25:37This is not something that just happened overnight.
- 25:39This is ingrained in them.
- 25:41So, yeah.
- 25:41Not a huge fan of that show.
- 25:43That's what I was saying earlier.
- 25:44I would never just be like, I can help you, because I can't.
- 25:46I'm not.
- 25:47I'm not equipped for that.
- 25:48I don't know what you need.
- 25:49All I know is that you need help and when you're ready.
- 25:52And a lot of people like that probably would never be ready.
- 25:55So that's when.
- 25:56As family members, and it's not always the case for everyone, but need to step in and reach out to professionals and how you can actually help that family member not just get mad at them because they won't get
- 26:07rid of their trash or whatever that's in their house.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:10If you can't understand it and find that compassion.
- 26:12There's some compassion.
- 26:14You don't have a.
- 26:15I mean.
- 26:16Well, I don't know.
- 26:17And then you see it.
- 26:18I'm getting all soft again.
- 26:19But, I mean, these people are crying over a candy wrapper.
- 26:21Come on, dude.
- 26:22Yeah, you're gonna explain that away with.
- 26:24Well, just don't do that.
- 26:25You're like, well, I've never thought of that.
- 26:27That's like telling me to check my spam folder.
- 26:29You're like, really.
- 26:32Didn't think of that one.
- 26:33Yeah, well, it's funny, too.
- 26:35And we saw that generationally, my age, Johnny's age, even Wendy's, that the grandparents that went through the Great Depression, they tended to hold on to things a little more because, wow, I might need that and what if I
- 26:49don't have the money to buy it?
- 26:51And I think that was a lot different than what we see now, with.
- 26:54With those situations, I was just in the news in Eastern Washington, where I grew up.
- 26:58There was a house there that was so overwhelmed, you couldn't see the house from the street.
- 27:04And there were appliances blocking the sidewalk.
- 27:08Interesting.
- 27:09Unfortunately, like, in the last couple weeks, the house caught on fire and the fire department couldn't even.
- 27:15Nobody died, which was awesome.
- 27:17But they couldn't get in there to put it out.
- 27:18They had to put.
- 27:19Treat it like a commercial fire with ladder trucks and just stay back.
- 27:24And they had to finally get in there with an excavator to clear a path just to get into the building.
- 27:29Wow.
- 27:30And I felt bad for the neighborhood.
- 27:32I used to live three blocks down that same street, so I knew the exact house.
- 27:36And unfortunately, over two years, that thing there was not one square inch of property that could be seen from the sky.
- 27:46And we need to have, I think, way better care for people with that.
- 27:51Obviously, that's where we need to get the mental health professionals in.
- 27:55And so many people get worried about that, too.
- 27:58I'll talk to people that are a little bit messy, and they go, oh my gosh, I've got this.
- 28:02And it's like, you just need some organization help.
- 28:05You're not to that point yet, so work on it.
- 28:10There's a big.
- 28:11There's a wide scale between hoarder and minimalist, and there's a lot of bumps in between.
- 28:17Exactly.
- 28:18So, Shelby, how do you start out with clients where.
- 28:21What's your start when somebody calls up and goes, help, I need organizational help.
- 28:26Yeah.
- 28:26So typically it starts with the phone call.
- 28:28Just like that.
- 28:29And then we do an in home consultation.
- 28:32So we come into the home, we see it in real life, do a walkthrough, we talk about pain points in the space.
- 28:38I can't even step foot into my closet because there's so much going on here.
- 28:42I hate that when I'm cooking, I can't.
- 28:44There's no flow.
- 28:45I don't know where anything goes.
- 28:46Things are getting put away wherever.
- 28:47So we identify those points.
- 28:48We know what actually needs to be tackled or tackled first.
- 28:52And I love in home consultations because I get to know the client too, and what's important to them and like how they're living in this space.
- 29:00After we get that information, I write them a proposal, gives them a little game plan, how much it's going to cost for each space or whole home or move or whatever it might be.
- 29:09And then once that gets approved by the client, then we go into the planning phase of it.
- 29:14So we.
- 29:15I Take measurements during the consultation, typically.
- 29:18So there's closet designing that might be happening.
- 29:20There's product sourcing and planning, scheduling those declutter sessions.
- 29:26Because you should never organize before you declutter.
- 29:30Why would you spend money on storing things that you don't need?
- 29:34Or.
- 29:34That's exactly the time you do it, though, right?
- 29:38Oh, I better organize first.
- 29:40I got.
- 29:40Yeah, that's literally.
- 29:41It's in one of our emails that goes out after you pay your deposit or something.
- 29:44It's.
- 29:45Please don't clean up for us.
- 29:46It's okay, you're good.
- 29:48And they still clean up every time.
- 29:50Yes.
- 29:51100.
- 29:51Yeah.
- 29:52I need to identify the mess.
- 29:54I need to know that when you walk into your house, you have this mountain of paperwork because, like, why.
- 29:58Why is that happening?
- 29:59Is it because there's nowhere to store it?
- 30:01Is it.
- 30:01Because that's just the spot where it's gonna.
- 30:04Of.
- 30:04Let's throw a basket there and contain it.
- 30:06We're really working through the problems that are actually there and not just here.
- 30:10Here's some pretty vents for the closet or wherever.
- 30:12And you're organized now.
- 30:14It doesn't work like that.
- 30:15Be a whole lot easier if it did.
- 30:17Right?
- 30:18Right.
- 30:18Yeah.
- 30:19Once we get the planning of it all done, then we have an install.
- 30:23If it's somewhere where we're doing the closet, a new closet, new pantry, we get that done first, obviously, and then we come in.
- 30:30So declutter any installation of systems, and then we bring in the product and do all the final details like labeling and all that good stuff.
- 30:38Nice.
- 30:39So, Shelby, what is the most.
- 30:41In your experience, what's the most popular room?
- 30:44Is it the closet?
- 30:45Is it the kitchen?
- 30:46Is it the bedroom?
- 30:47What's the.
- 30:48What's the room that is usually the.
- 30:50The gateway drug for people getting somebody in to get organized.
- 30:54The gateway drug.
- 30:54I love that.
- 30:55I would say a lot of.
- 30:57We get a lot of calls for kitchens, garages, and closets.
- 31:02I would say those are like our top three.
- 31:04And then maybe coming in fourth, playroom, kid area, because that's always overwhelming with a lot of toys and kids just have so much stuff.
- 31:12But I would definitely say.
- 31:13I think kitchen and garage would be, like, top, because those are two spaces that you're in often your closet, too.
- 31:20And you're constantly being reminded of what's not working in that space because you're typically spending every day, at least a little part of your day in each of those spaces.
- 31:31Nice.
- 31:32I just should have moved here.
- 31:34Go ahead, Johnny.
- 31:35I have a challenge for you.
- 31:36You talk about not being able to get into your closet.
- 31:39Well.
- 31:39Or get around in your kitchen.
- 31:41Well, I can't get in my bathroom very well.
- 31:43What do I.
- 31:43How do I organize a very large German shepherd and golden lab basket?
- 31:52Just put them in there in your basket.
- 31:56Good boy.
- 31:56Here's a treat.
- 31:57You stay.
- 31:58Yeah, it's hilarious.
- 32:00There we go.
- 32:01They weigh more than me.
- 32:03Yeah.
- 32:06Take it easy.
- 32:07So a really neat thing that's helped me and my clients a lot that Shelby and her team has.
- 32:13Have developed is their moving system.
- 32:18Yeah.
- 32:18So moving is one of the top, most seven stressful things that a person can do.
- 32:24And something like that, too.
- 32:28It's even more difficult.
- 32:30I've had, you know, Shelby has moved several of my clients, so either move them out so that we can do a full renovation or move them from their current home to the new home that we've just completed for
- 32:43them.
- 32:44And she'll go in and study their systems in their current home and then find new systems that will work in the new home.
- 32:53Box every, you know, declutter everything.
- 32:55Box everything.
- 32:56Put everything in, install all the.
- 32:58And when she says systems, it means a closet system, the ELFA system for Container Store.
- 33:04Or she'll work with, for example, David, our cabinet guy, and plan a full custom closet so that when they move in, everything has a place.
- 33:14And it's all beautiful and organized, dreamy.
- 33:17And it's great because it's just so nice because the client skips all the exhausting.
- 33:25I mean, it's not that they're not tired, but they're not tired the way they'd be if they did it all alone by themselves or didn't have professional advice or didn't have any kind of guidance and didn't have a
- 33:35plan.
- 33:36And Shelby works with the moving companies as well and coordinates the whole thing.
- 33:41So it saves us all a lot of frustration and energy.
- 33:48And it's just been great to have that because it's made a huge difference in the way my clients understand.
- 33:55Well, honestly, in the way they experience their house for the first time.
- 33:59Yeah.
- 34:00Because they don't come in to piles of boxes and everything undone.
- 34:05They come into a perfectly organized, beautiful home, which only further accentuates how pretty it is and all the work that I've gotten to do with my team.
- 34:15So people feel amazing, and that's really what you want.
- 34:18I mean, you don't.
- 34:19Yeah.
- 34:20You want people to sit down on.
- 34:21The floor and cry because they're overwhelmed.
- 34:24You want them to cry because they're.
- 34:26Like, this is the most amazing Beautiful place.
- 34:28Nice.
- 34:29So it's great you can make that shift for clients and it's been very helpful.
- 34:34Johnny, you've moved 84 times, isn't it?
- 34:36Oh, my gosh.
- 34:3787.
- 34:3887.
- 34:39Yeah.
- 34:39I was just gonna ask.
- 34:41So hefty bags and masking tape.
- 34:42Not.
- 34:43Not quite as cool.
- 34:45And then just, you know, this was my only rule.
- 34:49The last thing to leave the house was the stereo.
- 34:52And the first thing in the new house was the stereo.
- 34:54Right?
- 34:54Yeah.
- 34:55And then you throw everything around it and over the process of a few months.
- 34:59Yeah.
- 35:00Yeah.
- 35:00Like.
- 35:00Yeah, it's crazy.
- 35:02Like our process.
- 35:03And then I.
- 35:04Yeah.
- 35:06I actually had my most.
- 35:07I had my best move ever this last fall because I decided early on that I was going to be organized with it.
- 35:13So I bought a label maker and every.
- 35:15I did five boxes.
- 35:16I bought totes.
- 35:17So I bought Those Home Depot $9 big totes with the snap on lid and everything got labeled.
- 35:24I put labels on three sides so I knew where it was and it worked.
- 35:29I'm gonna end up with a lot of totes empty for the.
- 35:33I can sell them and get half my money back out of them and it'll be okay.
- 35:36But they're magic.
- 35:37I used them a bunch as a contractor, but not to move.
- 35:40Yeah.
- 35:43I could stack them up in my storage unit 12 high and they could stay there.
- 35:48Where moving boxes these days, it's so thin that after you get about five or six, everything's falling over.
- 35:54So to me, I'm like, these are locked in and this is awesome.
- 35:58Yeah.
- 35:58There's a great business concept that's kind of floating around a lot in Texas.
- 36:03I see like New York, like a lot of bigger cities.
- 36:06I'm noticing them.
- 36:07It's.
- 36:08They're.
- 36:08Instead of buying boxes, you can rent crates.
- 36:11So they're like interlocking crates too.
- 36:14So you don't need tape, you don't need whatever.
- 36:15You just rent the crates.
- 36:17They bring them on a truck, they drop them off, your movers use them and then they pick them up.
- 36:22It's the most genius thing because it's also great for the environment.
- 36:25Like.
- 36:25Yep.
- 36:26I am not the most cautious person.
- 36:28I should be better about the environment and waste and all the things.
- 36:32But because of my job, I see how much we do waste and get rid of and especially during moves.
- 36:38Oh, my goodness.
- 36:38Like so much cardboard and just paper and bubble wrap and when you're doing one a week, it's just like a lot.
- 36:45So, yeah, Hefty bags.
- 36:46Plastic.
- 36:47Yeah.
- 36:48There.
- 36:48It's a great thing.
- 36:49But yeah, look at you go labeling all three sides too.
- 36:51I mean, yeah, you're organized.
- 36:55For me, that's.
- 36:58And I was really diligent about, okay, if it's not on the label, it's not going on the box.
- 37:03And so I tried to keep things organized that way and it made it so much easier because a lot of my stuff I didn't have the space in the new house for.
- 37:11So I still have.
- 37:12I mean I had 26ft of closet, now I'm in down to five.
- 37:17Cause she's got her stuff too.
- 37:18But I know where everything's in.
- 37:20It's like they're folded up.
- 37:21It's in totes in my storage unit.
- 37:23And I can go in and go, hey, where's that jacket I need that I went and needed from last year that I'm not.
- 37:28I need once.
- 37:29Okay, let me go grab that.
- 37:31And I can find it in 60 seconds or less.
- 37:34Instead of cutting open 42 boxes going, where's it at?
- 37:38Yeah, ease of access.
- 37:40It's important.
- 37:42So that made a lot of sense.
- 37:43But yeah, it's interesting too.
- 37:45You talk about kitchens and kitchens.
- 37:47If you've got a brand new kitchen, it's so easier to organize it because you can really get a lot of accessories to go in there.
- 37:53From when I, as a certified kitchen designer myself, I'm the guy that goes in and says, okay, usually on a kitchen I try to do almost all drawers except for maybe a tall storage for cutting boards, sheet goods,
- 38:06and then maybe for the weird mixers and stuff that won't go on a drawer.
- 38:09I'll have some tall doors.
- 38:11But to me, I always went with drawers.
- 38:14Is that a pretty good way to go from an organizing point of view?
- 38:18Yeah, we love drawers.
- 38:20Things get so lost in cabinets or one of my least favorite cabinet options is when you open the cabinet and there's a half shelf and a deep shelf.
- 38:28What is that doing for anyone?
- 38:30I don't understand.
- 38:31How much money did we save on half a shelf?
- 38:32I don't know, but that's popular know, don't I?
- 38:35I think drawers are great, but also having a little bit of a combo, it is nice to have a few deep cabinets for large, I don't know, large mixing bowls or things that just don't work great.
- 38:45Yeah, the large big stuff that's not going to get lost in a deep cabinet.
- 38:48Yeah, but drawers are just easier to access.
- 38:52You can you look down, you see everything you have.
- 38:54It's the best.
- 38:55So Shelton, we're talking the kitchens and the other Thing is, I got an answer for you on that half depth shelf because I have worked with a bunch of different cabinet companies where I would fly in, they would
- 39:07fly me in and I'd be there for the week.
- 39:09We'd be picking out the new stain colors, the new cabinets, and that was my goal in some of these meetings.
- 39:16How do we get rid of this stupid shelf?
- 39:18And they would always come back and say, well, that's so you could put something taller in the front.
- 39:22And I'm like, no, no, no, no.
- 39:23And you can't access the back.
- 39:25Move the shelf, put something taller.
- 39:27To be honest, they would never say this.
- 39:30And these are big national companies.
- 39:32I honestly think they did that so they could get the add on sale for the rollout drawers.
- 39:38I think that's what it was.
- 39:39They wanted you to buy the three drawer cabinet because they wanted you to look up and go, that's horrible.
- 39:44I need to spend more.
- 39:45And I think it was their way of getting people to spend the extra $400 for pull out trays or a drawer cabinet there.
- 39:54And they were kind of penalizing the standard cabinet.
- 39:57Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
- 39:59Definitely.
- 40:00It's.
- 40:00What's hard for me to understand is that a lot of people don't have that visual or that they can't conceptualize that until it's done.
- 40:07And then it's like we're moving backwards and it's okay, great.
- 40:10We have this beautiful new kitchen now.
- 40:11It's not functioning the best as it could be.
- 40:13And I just spent especially in these multimillion dollar homes.
- 40:17It's like someone should be talking to the client about that beforehand.
- 40:21And that's why it's so great to have organizers and interior designers and contractors who are going to support you and like actually have your back and give you the hard advice of no, you need to spend this extra
- 40:33money right now so that this house serves you for the next 20, 30 years.
- 40:37That's why you're spending all this money now, not to just get into a pretty house.
- 40:41Yes.
- 40:42And there's two.
- 40:43I think in kitchens there is a point where the things that the cabinet craftsperson is going to sell you for the guts of your drawers and doors and everything and the things that a professional organizer would bring in,
- 40:58there can be a blend of those two things.
- 41:02But I would say it's, it's, it's important that you consult with the professional organizer to figure out that kitchen because standard solutions in kitchen cabinets are not your custom solution like we've been talking about through this episode.
- 41:22And they aren't going to serve you the best.
- 41:24And they're really expensive.
- 41:27Someone else makes them, not your cabinet guy.
- 41:30And they mark it up and then they sell it to you.
- 41:32You or to your contractor.
- 41:34And they mark it up again.
- 41:35And everyone gets their piece.
- 41:37Someone's business model.
- 41:38But if it's not going to work.
- 41:40Right.
- 41:40It doesn't make any sense.
- 41:41So.
- 41:42Right.
- 41:42You know, the trash pull out.
- 41:44Yeah, that makes great sense.
- 41:46Of course, we totally endorse this idea, but some of those crazy gizmo things is a huge problem.
- 41:56Sponges.
- 41:57Yeah, I think that that's so true, Wendy.
- 41:59And I think that's why I love that you always bring us on at the beginning of the job.
- 42:02Because you know things, obviously.
- 42:05But it's so helpful to see.
- 42:07No, we don't need that.
- 42:08You don't have X, Y and Z.
- 42:10So why would we need that in the kitchen?
- 42:12That is just kind of a standard, fun add on whatever.
- 42:14But you really need this.
- 42:16And so being able to eliminate those problems at the beginning is saving you time, resources and energy.
- 42:24Money.
- 42:24Maybe even.
- 42:25Or maybe not.
- 42:26But definitely time and resources and energy down the road.
- 42:29Or frustration.
- 42:30And even just investing in us, the professional organizers now to come in and make these systems for you and make your kitchen feel and look great.
- 42:39But it's still.
- 42:40I mean, we're not carpenters.
- 42:42We can't just build some drawers on site.
- 42:43We're working with what we got.
- 42:45So I think 100%, having a professional organizer just look over your plans.
- 42:51Just a quick little meeting.
- 42:52Just give it a little, little Look.
- 42:54I think 100%, your next business move is starting a cabinet line that you design, you help design.
- 43:03I love it.
- 43:04Love your brain, the face of it.
- 43:06Perfect.
- 43:08That.
- 43:09No, seriously, why you're not wrong.
- 43:11That's a real.
- 43:12That's a nice little brand issue.
- 43:14Like, I started as an organizer and then I went, these cabinets don't ever have the things I want.
- 43:19That would help a lot of people.
- 43:21Right?
- 43:21It's pretty.
- 43:22Two plus two.
- 43:24And yeah, you can just brand it.
- 43:26Really cool.
- 43:26And everybody go, oh, it's the hip new line of cabinets.
- 43:30Let's do it.
- 43:31Sign me up, schedule.
- 43:33I'll draw it up.
- 43:34There we go.
- 43:34Perfect.
- 43:35Thank you.
- 43:36But, you know, it's interesting, though.
- 43:38There's so many of those accessories that the.
- 43:40And I'm not going to name names out there because it doesn't matter, but that make these certain accessories.
- 43:44And I'm like, every single time I would say, you don't want this.
- 43:48And here's why.
- 43:50And they would go.
- 43:51And the tilt out sponge thing was one of them.
- 43:53Because anybody that ever installs a undermount sink, it's going to get in the way.
- 43:58It's never going to fit.
- 43:59And then they spend 75 bucks on the piece or 100 bucks on the piece that's installed in the cabinets.
- 44:05Now you're going to pay the contractor to go, oh, yeah, I gotta uninstall that.
- 44:09Fasten the drawer front somehow.
- 44:11That was gonna do this.
- 44:12And now, now the.
- 44:14No, that didn't work.
- 44:15Cost you 250 bucks.
- 44:17And it also makes your sponge smell bad.
- 44:20Disgusting.
- 44:21So gross.
- 44:22If you're just take.
- 44:24You just take the little pin nailer.
- 44:27And slip it in.
- 44:28Oxycontin.
- 44:30Don't get that icky.
- 44:32That ridiculous family member.
- 44:34Your.
- 44:34Your son.
