- 0:00Speaker 1: The views and opinions expressed on this program do not
- 0:03Speaker 1: necessarily reflect the views and opinions of five ADWCHS, it's
- 0:07Speaker 1: employees or WVRC Media.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It is seven minutes past nine o'clock. You're listening to
- 0:24Speaker 2: the Voice of Charleston five EIGHTWCCHS. I'm Delle Cooper filling
- 0:28Speaker 2: in for Dave Allen, just for today. There'll be some
- 0:31Speaker 2: few days over the next couple weeks I'll be filling
- 0:33Speaker 2: in for Dave, either me or Jeff Genkins, probably me
- 0:35Speaker 2: most days today, next Tuesday, next Thursday, and I think
- 0:39Speaker 2: another round of Tuesdays and Thursdays after that, and then
- 0:41Speaker 2: we'll see where we stand. But Dave will be back
- 0:44Speaker 2: on this show tomorrow. He'll be back on his afternoon
- 0:46Speaker 2: show with Amanda Baron this afternoon at noon for Metro
- 0:49Speaker 2: News midday, so you'll be able to catch Dave then.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But we have a good show for you coming up
- 0:52Speaker 2: here in the next hour. Joining me here in just
- 0:55Speaker 2: a couple of minutes, Joe Stevens from the city of
- 0:56Speaker 2: Nitro is going to join me. We're want to talk
- 0:57Speaker 2: about the opening of the Little League baseball season that's
- 1:00Speaker 2: taking place there this weekend. They have special guest Chrisabo,
- 1:02Speaker 2: who is going to be on deck this weekend for
- 1:06Speaker 2: the parade and for signing some autographs and for the
- 1:08Speaker 2: card show. That's going to be an exciting time in Nitro.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I love that Nitro does this. I think it's one
- 1:12Speaker 2: of the coolest little town things that someone can do.
- 1:15Speaker 2: And I'm of course a huge baseball fan, so I
- 1:17Speaker 2: think that's pretty pretty perfect. Also, Knell kind of Commissioner
- 1:20Speaker 2: Lance Wheeler is going to be with us several projects
- 1:22Speaker 2: that we're going to touch, one that's been successed around
- 1:25Speaker 2: the around the area over the last few weeks, and
- 1:28Speaker 2: some upcoming events as well. We're going to talk to
- 1:30Speaker 2: Commissioner Wheeler about that. You can get your questions ready
- 1:32Speaker 2: on that. We'll open up the phone calls in the
- 1:33Speaker 2: text if you have any questions for a Commissioner Wheeler
- 1:36Speaker 2: while he's in that's going to be in the second segment.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And then I mentioned how Chris Abo is going to
- 1:40Speaker 2: be with Joe Stevens in the city of Nitro this
- 1:43Speaker 2: weekend for the opening of the Little League baseball season.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Dave Weekly had the opportunity to interview Chris Sabo on
- 1:48Speaker 2: Tuesday afternoon and it was a really cool ten minute interview.
- 1:52Speaker 2: You know, Sabo when he was a player was a
- 1:54Speaker 2: little bit media shot. He's done a lot of media
- 1:56Speaker 2: since then. But Dave has very good insights when it
- 1:59Speaker 2: comes to inner views and so forth. And so there's
- 2:01Speaker 2: an interview it's about nine and a half minutes long
- 2:04Speaker 2: that we'll replay before the end of the show today
- 2:06Speaker 2: because there's a lot of folks that listen in the
- 2:08Speaker 2: afternoon that don't necessarily listen in the morning. That was
- 2:10Speaker 2: a good interview with Chris Abo. We are the home
- 2:12Speaker 2: for the Reds, so I thought it would be a good
- 2:13Speaker 2: idea to bring some of that content from the afternoon
- 2:16Speaker 2: to the morning show. So you guys can hear Dave
- 2:18Speaker 2: Weekly talk to Chris Sabo the show today. Phone calls,
- 2:21Speaker 2: if you're going to call the show today is going
- 2:22Speaker 2: to be brought to you by Guaranteed Bank. Phone calls
- 2:25Speaker 2: are a service of Guaranteed Bank. Opening soon in Charleston
- 2:27Speaker 2: thirteen twenty Kanaal Boulevard East Techting services are also provided
- 2:30Speaker 2: by West Virginia's Finance Men's Store, Tony the Taylor, Virginia
- 2:33Speaker 2: Street and Charleston. The next Big Trunk Show is April
- 2:35Speaker 2: twenty third, The Malcolm Trousers Trunk Show launch provided by
- 2:38Speaker 2: Polly's Italian Restaurant. For more, visit Tony's Facebook page or
- 2:41Speaker 2: Bestmaster Taylor dot com. Let's bring on to the program.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Now we have Joe Stevens who's joining us from the
- 2:48Speaker 2: City of Niser. We want to talk a little bit
- 2:49Speaker 2: about the opening of the Little League Baseball season, which
- 2:51Speaker 2: is really kind of the official official opening of a
- 2:55Speaker 2: spring and summer festivities. As far as I'm concerned in
- 2:57Speaker 2: the Kanaal Valley, it seems like Joe, good morning, how
- 2:59Speaker 2: you doing today.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Good morning, Dale, and thanks for having us one this morning. Hey,
- 3:06Speaker 3: first off, before we get into it, my best wishes
- 3:09Speaker 3: and thoughts and prayers out for brother Dave there. I
- 3:12Speaker 3: know what he's going through. I personally know what he's
- 3:14Speaker 3: going through. And you know, point at North David. You
- 3:19Speaker 3: just keep on pushing.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Thoughts with both of you. But yeah, very well intended.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We appreciate that too, Thanks man.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Hey man, It's gonna be a fun time Saturday. We
- 3:29Speaker 3: tried this out last year, Dale, if you remember, we
- 3:31Speaker 3: brought George Foster in, the only player in Cincinnati. Read's
- 3:35Speaker 3: history to hit fifty plus oh Mons hitting fifty two
- 3:39Speaker 3: in the seventies there and a member of the Big
- 3:42Speaker 3: Red Machine and everything, and the kids just loved it.
- 3:46Speaker 3: We had him throw out the first pitch last year.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Then he did the Baseball Card Show and we said, well,
- 3:54Speaker 3: if it works once, it's going to work again. And
- 3:56Speaker 3: we went ahead and or organized what we wanted to do,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and Chris Savo was available and like on the show
- 4:05Speaker 3: with Dave talking to him, Chris Avo will be in
- 4:08Speaker 3: town here in Nitro on Saturday morning the parade, the
- 4:13Speaker 3: Little League Parade. He will be the grand marshall for
- 4:16Speaker 3: parade that will start at eleven o'clock and go from
- 4:20Speaker 3: Pickens Road to Nitro City Park along Route twenty five.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So all the teams, all the kids, all the players
- 4:28Speaker 3: both baseball and softball, they will be in the parade
- 4:32Speaker 3: and it's just just a fun time. Then we get
- 4:35Speaker 3: to city Park, Chris will throw out the first pitch.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Not only is he throwing out the first baseball pitch,
- 4:42Speaker 3: but he will be tossing the first softball of the
- 4:45Speaker 3: season also, So Chris, he's probably warming up in the
- 4:50Speaker 3: bullpen right now or taking some infield as it may be,
- 4:53Speaker 3: but he'll be doing that and talking to the kids
- 4:57Speaker 3: right there at the field and meet and greet that
- 5:00Speaker 3: sort of thing. But another big thing is that we
- 5:03Speaker 3: will be then escorting him over to Nitro High School
- 5:06Speaker 3: in the commons area of the high school right there
- 5:09Speaker 3: for the second annual Nitro Baseball Card Show that's put
- 5:14Speaker 3: on by Tim Arnott with Third Floor Comics here in Nitro.
- 5:17Speaker 3: We've got over forty vendors that will be participating in
- 5:21Speaker 3: the show and everything. Chris will be signing autographs from
- 5:25Speaker 3: noon until to All the proceeds from the autographs that
- 5:30Speaker 3: twenty dollars a piece autographs from Chris Sabo will be
- 5:34Speaker 3: going back to the Little League. So just a fun time.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And by the way, Dale, we also have a baseball
- 5:43Speaker 3: trivia contest. You know you've got seen trivia that goes
- 5:46Speaker 3: on all throughout the city and the area and everything. Well,
- 5:49Speaker 3: this one will be dedicated to just baseball. We did
- 5:53Speaker 3: it last year, had a lot of fun with it.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And the first the team that comes in first place
- 5:59Speaker 3: will get two hundred dollars, second place is one hundred
- 6:02Speaker 3: dollars and third place is seventy five. So it's just
- 6:06Speaker 3: a fun time to kick off Little League baseball and
- 6:09Speaker 3: softball here in Nitro.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Man, I really love just tell me a little bit then.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I think we may have talked about this a little
- 6:15Speaker 2: bit last year, but I'm really curious on like where
- 6:18Speaker 2: the kind of the genesis of this idea comes from,
- 6:20Speaker 2: because it's a great way to relate to the community.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I mean, it has a very it's a very modern production,
- 6:26Speaker 2: but it's a very old school kind of vibe. I
- 6:27Speaker 2: when we were talking about baseball introducing sort of the
- 6:31Speaker 2: city's spring into spring, so to speak. And I kind
- 6:35Speaker 2: of love that that that hometown environment. I love tying
- 6:38Speaker 2: it into baseball, of course because I'm a big baseball fan.
- 6:40Speaker 2: But what was it? Was there some nostalgia tied into that?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Or is Nitro just a perfect place for this type
- 6:44Speaker 2: of event? What kind of went into the idea for this?
- 6:47Speaker 3: It's we we love to support youth athletics here in
- 6:52Speaker 3: Nitro and Little League is apple pie. You know, it's
- 6:56Speaker 3: just Americana at its best again. Tim or nine with
- 7:00Speaker 3: Third Floor Comics and the Nitro Antique mal He and
- 7:03Speaker 3: I just got together last year. He said, Hey, how
- 7:06Speaker 3: about let's do something special for the little League getting
- 7:09Speaker 3: this all together, putting it all together. For one day,
- 7:12Speaker 3: we met with the Little League, Sean Hoffman, the president
- 7:17Speaker 3: and everything. And Shawn's also a big Cincinnati red fan,
- 7:21Speaker 3: and when I said about bringing Cincinnati Reds in, his
- 7:25Speaker 3: eyes just lit up and it just like you said,
- 7:29Speaker 3: it's part of a small town, just the persona of
- 7:36Speaker 3: a small town. And by the way, well, a lot
- 7:38Speaker 3: of people probably don't know that. When Nitro was formed
- 7:42Speaker 3: in nineteen seventeen, one of the first employees of Explosive
- 7:48Speaker 3: Plants C was Pie Trainer Pie Later. Pie Later was
- 7:53Speaker 3: the third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates for seventeen seasons
- 7:58Speaker 3: and had a Hall of Fame. In fact, he was
- 8:01Speaker 3: the first third baseman to go into the Baseball Hall
- 8:04Speaker 3: of Fame in Cooperstown. But he was an employee here
- 8:07Speaker 3: at Explosive Plant C in nineteen eighteen after the they
- 8:12Speaker 3: opened up and started making gunpowder for the US Armed Forces.
- 8:16Speaker 3: So there's the baseball in Nitro goes way way.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Back, Man, that that is.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's one of the reasons I love talking to you, Joe,
- 8:24Speaker 2: is you're always full of I did not know that
- 8:25Speaker 2: about Pie Train or that is a really cool fact.
- 8:27Speaker 4: About Nitro.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what again, it's about the kids. Yeah,
- 8:35Speaker 3: and it's about competing and meeting some of their idols.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I mean, by the way, a lot of people have
- 8:42Speaker 3: already purchased Chrissabo cards. A lot of people already had
- 8:47Speaker 3: Crisbo cards. I found a Chris Sabo nineteen ninety four
- 8:51Speaker 3: card when he played for my Baltimore Orioles. Yep, so
- 8:55Speaker 3: I have done that. He'll be signing his Ools card
- 8:59Speaker 3: and not as read card. But you know, that's just
- 9:01Speaker 3: kind of a side note. I heard the interview with
- 9:06Speaker 3: Dave the other day. I'm glad you're playing it again.
- 9:09Speaker 3: It was really exciting.
- 9:11Speaker 4: I did not know he did.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Not play little league baseball and did not take it
- 9:15Speaker 3: up until the high school years and everything. But boy
- 9:19Speaker 3: did he go forward after that.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt. I really like his story.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I like how he in some ways was almost like
- 9:25Speaker 2: a real life Crash Davis, where he was an all
- 9:28Speaker 2: star at the minor league level for years and years
- 9:29Speaker 2: and years before finally breaking into the big leads at
- 9:31Speaker 2: twenty six and having a Rookie of the Year campaign.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Like I've always liked Sabo's story and of course being
- 9:37Speaker 2: part of that historic team for the Reds in nineteen
- 9:39Speaker 2: ninety has always had a soft spark in my heart.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I love the interview with him, talk to him a
- 9:42Speaker 2: little bit off air, nice guy, really looking forward to
- 9:45Speaker 2: for it to him coming to Nitro because it really
- 9:47Speaker 2: is all about the kids.
- 9:48Speaker 4: And here's a guy that.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Really worked hard and made it, you know, kind of
- 9:51Speaker 2: made himself into a professional baseball player, had a Rookie
- 9:54Speaker 2: of the Year campaign, was a good ball player for
- 9:56Speaker 2: a World Series team. You know, that's inspirational for kids.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And the great thing this is the last thing I'll
- 10:01Speaker 2: say about this. I love all sports, you know. I
- 10:03Speaker 2: like basketball, football and everything up there's something special about
- 10:06Speaker 2: baseball because of the pace of the game and the
- 10:08Speaker 2: way that you can just kind of stand around and
- 10:09Speaker 2: talk and stuff like that. A perfect way to socialize
- 10:12Speaker 2: and to get.
- 10:12Speaker 4: The community together.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And you know, baseball. I'll give you a quick, real
- 10:16Speaker 3: quick story. I've been to Cooperstown number of times and
- 10:20Speaker 3: it's all about baseball there. I actually saw a New
- 10:24Speaker 3: York Yankee dressed in New York Yankee garb open up
- 10:27Speaker 3: the front door of the museum for a Boston Red
- 10:30Speaker 3: Sox fan and it's it's all about baseball, and this
- 10:34Speaker 3: Saturday here in Nitro, it's going to be all about baseball.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Chris Sabo again coming in town, being part of the parade,
- 10:41Speaker 3: part of the opening ceremonies at City Park and everything,
- 10:45Speaker 3: and then you get to meet them and with them
- 10:48Speaker 3: at the Nitro Baseball card show at the High School
- 10:52Speaker 3: from twelve until two. Hey Dale, if you guys, if
- 10:55Speaker 3: you're not doing anything on Saturday, you're more welcome to
- 10:58Speaker 3: come join the team for the baseball trivia at two o'clock.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I really appreciate that, and I've already talked to my daughter.
- 11:05Speaker 2: We were thinking about coming down there and doing that,
- 11:06Speaker 2: just to have a day out in the nice weather
- 11:08Speaker 2: and stuff. So I'm hoping to see you down there.
- 11:10Speaker 3: We will be here and again thanks to everybody that
- 11:15Speaker 3: has helped to put this together. And by the way,
- 11:17Speaker 3: Chrissebo is getting a little hospitality from the Marty Grouse
- 11:22Speaker 3: Casino and Resort here in Nitro. That's where he'll be
- 11:25Speaker 3: spending his nights during his stay here in the city.
- 11:32Speaker 2: That's fantastic stuff, Joe. I appreciate your time as always.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I love what you're doing with this stuff. Over at Nitro.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Tell the mayor we said hi, and we'll talk to
- 11:38Speaker 2: you next time.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Let's go Os and Reds talk to you later. To
- 11:43Speaker 4: take care. Man bye.
- 11:44Speaker 2: All right, that's Joe Stevens from the city in Nitro,
- 11:46Speaker 2: longtime friend and friend of the program and big Orioles
- 11:50Speaker 2: fan and baseball fan in general. I'd like to talk
- 11:52Speaker 2: to him about baseball and the Reds and everything else
- 11:54Speaker 2: that's going on. You know, if you ever go to
- 11:55Speaker 2: New York to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame,
- 11:57Speaker 2: don't make the mistake. As a young man, I made
- 11:59Speaker 2: the mistake that, Hey, I'm going to New York City.
- 12:01Speaker 2: The Baseball Hall of Fame can't be that far away.
- 12:04Speaker 2: It's pretty far away from the city if you're looking
- 12:06Speaker 2: to get there from Manhattan, that's for sure. The Dave

- 16:43Speaker 4: For having me? Yeah, thanks for.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Coming in I really appreciate you coming in and sharing
- 16:47Speaker 2: some of this information that's going on here locally. And
- 16:50Speaker 2: first of all, welcome to spring. I think we had
- 16:52Speaker 2: kind of a long, long winter. It's nice to be
- 16:54Speaker 2: on the other side of things.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Nice weather.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Just to me, it's like a rebirth cycle. It feels
- 16:59Speaker 2: nice to be in good weather now.
- 17:00Speaker 11: I don't want you to jinx it's for here in
- 17:02Speaker 11: West Virginia, Kennel County, because we've got some pretty extreme
- 17:05Speaker 11: weathers even this time in previous years.
- 17:07Speaker 4: But it looks good, it feels good. I'm happy. I
- 17:10Speaker 4: know we're going to have.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Some maybe some thunderstorms later on today, but that's just
- 17:12Speaker 2: regular you know, April stuff, so that'll be okay. There's
- 17:14Speaker 2: a lot of stuff going on locally, and there's a
- 17:16Speaker 2: lot of things that we can talk about. By the way,
- 17:17Speaker 2: if you have any questions, you can give us a call.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Threes or four three four five fifty to fifty eight.
- 17:20Speaker 2: You can send over texts. I think we have some
- 17:22Speaker 2: text that we'll get to here in just a moment.
- 17:24Speaker 2: That is three zero four no three five five zeros
- 17:27Speaker 2: or eight threes or four non three five five zeros
- 17:29Speaker 2: are eight. You're more than welcome to give us a text.
- 17:31Speaker 2: We'll get to those here in just a few minutes.
- 17:33Speaker 2: A lot of things that are coming up. You sent
- 17:34Speaker 2: me some information and wanted to talk about what's been
- 17:37Speaker 2: going on in Tornado. Tell us about the event that
- 17:40Speaker 2: happened there. We saw a pretty good increase from a
- 17:43Speaker 2: year every year as far as that goes.
- 17:44Speaker 11: Yeah, so we're going to be having our second county
- 17:48Speaker 11: clean up. These are very popular here in Kennall County.
- 17:51Speaker 11: We get calls in the fall, the beginning of the fall,
- 17:53Speaker 11: in the beginning of spring, when we hold these events,
- 17:56Speaker 11: people wondering when is the county cleanup and when can
- 17:58Speaker 11: we be bringing the three trash tires, appliances, things that
- 18:03Speaker 11: are baby just sitting in your garage, sitting on the
- 18:05Speaker 11: property that maybe the significant other has been telling you
- 18:09Speaker 11: you need to get that out of here so the
- 18:10Speaker 11: kids can go play so I don't trip over it,
- 18:13Speaker 11: and you just haven't been able to get to it
- 18:14Speaker 11: because it's just an inconvenience. Well, our county cleanups are
- 18:17Speaker 11: a convenience to the public, to the people to be
- 18:20Speaker 11: able to get trash, debris, tires, everything cleaned out and
- 18:24Speaker 11: disposed of properly. You know, we just had one last
- 18:27Speaker 11: weekend and I talked to our planning and a development
- 18:30Speaker 11: director and he said it was a fantastic event, hugely successful.
- 18:35Speaker 11: We had over one thousand vehicles drive through in that day.
- 18:40Speaker 11: And what does that mean, Well, that means is that
- 18:41Speaker 11: we've had nineteen hundred tires recycled. That's nineteen hundred tires
- 18:46Speaker 11: that are not going to be found in our ditches,
- 18:48Speaker 11: in our rivers, in our lakes. These are properly disposed of.
- 18:52Speaker 11: We've also had one one hundred and seventy two point
- 18:55Speaker 11: zero five tons of trash and debris. And you know
- 18:59Speaker 11: when we we say tons, sometimes it's especially that big number.
- 19:03Speaker 11: It's hard to understand that. Well, let me put it
- 19:05Speaker 11: in figures that maybe it might be a little easier.
- 19:07Speaker 11: That's sixty f one fifties. Wow, the same weight of
- 19:11Speaker 11: sixty f.
- 19:12Speaker 4: One fifty's that for a second.
- 19:14Speaker 12: Wow?
- 19:14Speaker 11: I mean absolutely incredible amount of trash and debris that
- 19:17Speaker 11: was properly disposed of. And again, this is to make
- 19:19Speaker 11: sure that we keep our waters clean, our roadways clean,
- 19:21Speaker 11: our our communities clean, and make sure this debris doesn't
- 19:25Speaker 11: end up on the side of the road or anywhere else.
- 19:27Speaker 4: And we also had sixteen tons of metal.
- 19:30Speaker 11: And then our e cycle program, which is something we
- 19:32Speaker 11: just recently added in where you can bring in a TV,
- 19:35Speaker 11: you can bring in any appliances and we can recycle those.
- 19:40Speaker 11: That was four point seven nine to nine tons of
- 19:43Speaker 11: e cycle waste just at the Systemville location. And guess what,
- 19:47Speaker 11: we got one coming up here on the twenty fifth.
- 19:50Speaker 11: It's going to be at the Cabin Creek area.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's going to be coming up on the
- 19:54Speaker 2: twenty fifth. It's pretty amazing when you think about things
- 19:56Speaker 2: like this. If you're a homeowner or apartment of whatever
- 19:59Speaker 2: you do, but just take a look around. And I
- 20:02Speaker 2: did this recently because we're getting ready to go through
- 20:03Speaker 2: a big clean out, you know, after years of living
- 20:06Speaker 2: in the home and then having a kid and then
- 20:08Speaker 2: you build. I mean you look around and suddenly it's like, wow,
- 20:10Speaker 2: there's so much stuff here. And one of the things
- 20:12Speaker 2: particular that I saw, and a clean up opportunity like
- 20:16Speaker 2: this is perfect for that. I had something delivered, a
- 20:19Speaker 2: large living room shelving unit that was delivered last year
- 20:23Speaker 2: from one of the department stores. Anyway, it was defective
- 20:26Speaker 2: when it arrived. They sent me a new one, but
- 20:29Speaker 2: they didn't offer me any way to get rid of
- 20:31Speaker 2: the one they sent me.
- 20:32Speaker 4: That was huge.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I couldn't even fit in my car, you know, it
- 20:34Speaker 2: was like too big for me, and so I had
- 20:36Speaker 2: no way to really get rid of this thing. I
- 20:38Speaker 2: used an opportunity to do it. But if somebody has
- 20:40Speaker 2: something like that that they've gotten, of course it can't
- 20:42Speaker 2: be one of the hazardous things that's not accepted. But
- 20:44Speaker 2: if they have something like that that's been in their yard,
- 20:46Speaker 2: they've had I've seen this in my neighborhood before.
- 20:49Speaker 4: You put it under a tarp or something.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So you know, you know, there's all kinds of ways
- 20:52Speaker 2: that you try to get rid of some of these things.
- 20:53Speaker 2: This is the perfect opportunity to get rid of some
- 20:55Speaker 2: of that stuff that it's hard to get rid of sometimes.
- 20:57Speaker 11: Well and sometimes it's just the vast amount of But listen,
- 21:00Speaker 11: I'm a guy that my wife and I bought a
- 21:02Speaker 11: fixer upper home, and I started doing some of these
- 21:04Speaker 11: DIY projects, especially during COVID myself, and uh, you know,
- 21:08Speaker 11: I would end up, you know.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Removing tile or removing.
- 21:12Speaker 11: A bathtub or a sink or a cabinet, and I thought, well,
- 21:15Speaker 11: what am I going to do with this? This isn't
- 21:17Speaker 11: something that waste management. Uh, this is not something that
- 21:20Speaker 11: waste management can come in and clean up or take myself.
- 21:24Speaker 11: You know, you always have those limits of how many bags. Uh,
- 21:26Speaker 11: you know, these are things that we need to have
- 21:29Speaker 11: disposed of. It's for the convenience of the constituents here
- 21:32Speaker 11: in Kennall County, and it's making sure that we keep
- 21:34Speaker 11: our communities clean.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I want to go ahead and just say the dates
- 21:37Speaker 4: real quick here.
- 21:37Speaker 11: It's uh in Cabin Creek, It's going to be April
- 21:40Speaker 11: twenty fifth from eight am to four pm and the
- 21:44Speaker 11: addresses one five one two seven mccorkor Avenue Southeast in Shillion.
- 21:49Speaker 11: Again that is eight am to four pm one five
- 21:55Speaker 11: one two seven mccorkor Avenue Southeast, Shillion. And you can
- 21:59Speaker 11: find all these details as well on the Knall County
- 22:01Speaker 11: Commissions Facebook page and our social media.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Do you have to bring an ID right to prove
- 22:04Speaker 2: your resident? You need to make sure that you do
- 22:06Speaker 2: that to Maybe that makes sense, makes sense because you
- 22:08Speaker 2: don't want people to abuse that type of situation. Just briefly,
- 22:12Speaker 2: you do take electronics and car batters. We talked about that.
- 22:14Speaker 2: How about something like a small engine, like a lawnmower
- 22:17Speaker 2: or something. Yes, you do take those, Okay, so I've
- 22:19Speaker 2: seen that before too. So if you're looking to get
- 22:20Speaker 2: rid of something like that, that's a great he.
- 22:22Speaker 11: Well, we can't take anymore. And I've told this story
- 22:24Speaker 11: many times. We had one individual come in with a
- 22:26Speaker 11: john boat, Oh yeah, and we took it. We actually
- 22:30Speaker 11: had somebody bring in a car once and I think
- 22:33Speaker 11: what it was was one of those fixer upper cars
- 22:35Speaker 11: that you bought on a Facebook marketplace that you didn't
- 22:38Speaker 11: tell your wife and then it sat there for a
- 22:41Speaker 11: while because you couldn't get it fixed, and the wife
- 22:43Speaker 11: finally said, you got to get that out of our yard.
- 22:45Speaker 11: We don't take the john boats anymore. It's just something
- 22:49Speaker 11: that we just can't do. But we do take just
- 22:51Speaker 11: about everything. We can't take paint, we can't take oil,
- 22:54Speaker 11: any hashdous material, And then I've always had a lot
- 22:57Speaker 11: of questions about pro paine tanks. We will take propane tanks,
- 23:00Speaker 11: but that valve cover does need to be removed prior
- 23:02Speaker 11: to you getting one site. So there's just about nothing
- 23:06Speaker 11: that we won't take other than what I just listed,
- 23:08Speaker 11: and we've seen so many people come in with trailers,
- 23:11Speaker 11: come in with trash. We won't take anything from commercial businesses.
- 23:14Speaker 11: That's something that should be on the cost of the
- 23:16Speaker 11: commercial businesses, not on the taxpayer residential only. But again,
- 23:19Speaker 11: even with those limitations, you can tell from the numbers
- 23:22Speaker 11: from the Cistsonville area how incredible it's been. I think
- 23:25Speaker 11: that what we want to look at in the Cabin
- 23:26Speaker 11: Creek cleanup is going to be even more incredible. And remember,
- 23:30Speaker 11: you don't have to live in the Cabin Creek area.
- 23:32Speaker 11: Anyone in Kennall County can come to this cleanup on
- 23:34Speaker 11: the twenty fifth.
- 23:35Speaker 2: That's great stuff. So that's going to be the cle
- 23:38Speaker 2: cleanup that's coming up on the twenty fifth. We'll get
- 23:40Speaker 2: that information out to you again before we leave the airways.
- 23:42Speaker 2: As far as the address and stuff goes, I have
- 23:43Speaker 2: it right here, so we'll make sure that we get
- 23:44Speaker 2: that out to you again before we move on. We
- 23:46Speaker 2: do have a caller that's called in that has a
- 23:48Speaker 2: question this morning. Do we get to go ahead?
- 23:50Speaker 4: Caller? What's your first name?
- 23:52Speaker 13: My name is Jennifer.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Okay, Johner. Hey, Jennifer, how you doing. What's your question
- 23:55Speaker 4: for Commission Wheeler?
- 23:56Speaker 13: I'm doing well.
- 23:57Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 23:57Speaker 13: I hope you are too. The commission Wheeler. I heard
- 24:02Speaker 13: the episode from some months ago where he said he
- 24:06Speaker 13: had been tagged the demolition commissioner. So I reported some
- 24:12Speaker 13: months ago three dwellings unoccupied dwellings on our road, which
- 24:19Speaker 13: is Borpe Road in the Tornado area. One completely collapsed,
- 24:24Speaker 13: one that's in the process of collapsing, and then another
- 24:28Speaker 13: one that It wasn't so much about the structure, although
- 24:32Speaker 13: it's deteriorating too, but it was the number of junked
- 24:36Speaker 13: vehicles I mean, including cabs from tractor trailers, two big
- 24:43Speaker 13: of the two big flatbed trailers that go with with
- 24:46Speaker 13: one of those cabs, multiple vehicles. I set pictures in
- 24:51Speaker 13: and I did get a response very quickly. It was
- 24:56Speaker 13: like five or six days, which straddled a weekend, so
- 24:59Speaker 13: to me, very quickly. And sure enough, well they said
- 25:04Speaker 13: it had been turned over to the Planning Commission, that
- 25:06Speaker 13: they're the ones who actually take care of this, and
- 25:10Speaker 13: sure enough people started showing up and doing things. I
- 25:15Speaker 13: think one has done all they're going to do. They
- 25:19Speaker 13: just retrieved what they wanted out of the house and
- 25:21Speaker 13: they've walked off from it. The one that's collapsing, they've
- 25:24Speaker 13: peddled with it, off and on. They're doing it themselves.
- 25:27Speaker 13: They haven't hired a contractor to do it for them.
- 25:30Speaker 13: I don't know what their intentions are. And the one
- 25:32Speaker 13: at the end of the road with all the junk vehicles,
- 25:34Speaker 13: nothing has happened. Okay, I'm curious how much time you
- 25:38Speaker 13: give them or does it vary from circumstance to circumstance,
- 25:43Speaker 13: And then what happens if they don't follow the order
- 25:47Speaker 13: from the planning commission.
- 25:49Speaker 4: That's a great question. And first off, Jennifer, thank you
- 25:51Speaker 4: so much.
- 25:52Speaker 11: So many constituents have called my office due to me
- 25:55Speaker 11: being the Cleanup and Demolition Commissioner. As you mentioned before,
- 25:59Speaker 11: you know, this is something that we take as a
- 26:01Speaker 11: high priority of cleaning up this county. I think it's
- 26:03Speaker 11: something that we had not done well enough. And when
- 26:05Speaker 11: I came in in twenty twenty one as your county Commissioner,
- 26:08Speaker 11: I made it a goal to clean up this county.
- 26:10Speaker 11: I think we've done a lot of great work when
- 26:11Speaker 11: doing that.
- 26:12Speaker 14: I have.
- 26:13Speaker 11: Actually, I'm actually aware of those three cases. I've been
- 26:15Speaker 11: following them as much as I can with all the
- 26:17Speaker 11: other things going on in the county. To answer your question,
- 26:20Speaker 11: we usually attempt to work with the property owner at first.
- 26:23Speaker 11: You know, let's let's talk with them, figure out where
- 26:25Speaker 11: their issue is and maybe see where what resources we
- 26:28Speaker 11: can provide them. A lot of times when we go
- 26:30Speaker 11: and talk to them, we tell them these dates of
- 26:31Speaker 11: these cleanups and say, hey, if you can just get
- 26:33Speaker 11: this taken to the location and get your yard cleaned up,
- 26:38Speaker 11: you know, that's that's good for everyone. It's good for
- 26:40Speaker 11: the community, good for you, and it's free of charge.
- 26:42Speaker 11: And I want to make sure everyone knows that our
- 26:43Speaker 11: cleanups are free of charge to everyone. If it's free
- 26:45Speaker 11: for me, it's free for you.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Now.
- 26:47Speaker 11: If they are not compliant with that and are not
- 26:49Speaker 11: working with planning, then we do send them a master
- 26:51Speaker 11: court and we put it in front of a judge
- 26:53Speaker 11: and do what we can to get that cleaned up.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Because it is an ordinance.
- 26:56Speaker 11: It is something that you need to be able to
- 26:58Speaker 11: do because the value value of the property that you're
- 27:01Speaker 11: diminishing is also diminishing the value of the properties around you.
- 27:06Speaker 11: And we feel like that it's something that we serve
- 27:08Speaker 11: the entire community, the entire county, and so I'm glad
- 27:12Speaker 11: to hear that there has been progress made. I will
- 27:14Speaker 11: continue to be on top of those properties. I'll look
- 27:16Speaker 11: into the one that you mentioned. If you ever have
- 27:19Speaker 11: any questions, you're always and this is for all the
- 27:21Speaker 11: listeners right now, call my office. Talk to my assistant Astrod.
- 27:25Speaker 11: She's a lovely woman who will be able to answer
- 27:28Speaker 11: your questions. Get the information to me if I'm not
- 27:30Speaker 11: in the office, and we'll always get back to you
- 27:33Speaker 11: as quickly as we can and make sure that we're
- 27:35Speaker 11: taking care of it. These now, room's not built in
- 27:38Speaker 11: a day. You know, we can't have it cleaned up
- 27:39Speaker 11: the very next day. That's not in the power or
- 27:41Speaker 11: the purview of the County Commission. But what we've seen
- 27:44Speaker 11: is just having a conversation with a property owner and
- 27:47Speaker 11: understanding what their limitations are. Maybe this is an elderly
- 27:50Speaker 11: man that just isn't able to get it cleaned up.
- 27:54Speaker 11: Maybe waste management hasn't came out there for weeks because
- 27:57Speaker 11: we've seen that, unfortunately, and we fought that on the
- 27:59Speaker 11: PS level. But we will work with them at first
- 28:02Speaker 11: and help them with the resources to get it cleaned up.
- 28:05Speaker 11: I think you saw that, Jennifer, from the two that
- 28:07Speaker 11: you mentioned. But the third one, if they're not being
- 28:10Speaker 11: compliant with us, we will take them to matter court
- 28:12Speaker 11: and we will issue that order for them.
- 28:14Speaker 4: To have that removed.
- 28:16Speaker 13: Okay, I appreciate that. One thing I want to mention
- 28:19Speaker 13: I have talked with Acrid and she is quite nice.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Good.
- 28:23Speaker 13: I called about a month ago to report that they
- 28:28Speaker 13: were taking action on the one that's closest to us,
- 28:30Speaker 13: which was the one that is collapsed. Yeah, but what
- 28:35Speaker 13: they were taking out in a trailer, We thought they
- 28:39Speaker 13: were taking it to, you know, the landfill. No they
- 28:42Speaker 13: were taking it down to the end of the road
- 28:44Speaker 13: and dumped it alongside the road, which is yeah, have
- 28:49Speaker 13: it property and less part of it.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Jennifer, this is what I want you to do right now.
- 28:53Speaker 11: I want you to when you get off the line
- 28:55Speaker 11: here with me, I want you to call my office,
- 28:57Speaker 11: talk to Astrid, tell her that information, tell her that
- 29:00Speaker 11: you talk to me personally on the radio, and we're
- 29:02Speaker 11: going to get you taken care of.
- 29:03Speaker 12: Okay, okay, thank you.
- 29:05Speaker 13: And I have one more concern that does not affect
- 29:08Speaker 13: me directly here, but in traveling Smith's Creek Road from
- 29:14Speaker 13: Tornado into South Charleston, you reach a point where you're
- 29:20Speaker 13: approaching it's closer to South Charleston I think probably ends
- 29:23Speaker 13: maybe at the South Charleston city limit. I'm not sure,
- 29:26Speaker 13: but there's a ridge that the foliage, the trees have
- 29:31Speaker 13: been completely stripped.
- 29:33Speaker 12: Yeah, it goes on forever.
- 29:36Speaker 13: And the same thing out at the end of Green
- 29:39Speaker 13: View where you hit Childress Road. And I can just
- 29:42Speaker 13: imagine what a runoff problem that's going to be. Do
- 29:45Speaker 13: you have any idea what's going on there?
- 29:48Speaker 11: I don't right now, but what I can tell you
- 29:49Speaker 11: is tell that to Asterroid we're going to get Department
- 29:52Speaker 11: Highways involved and seeing if we can get that cleared up,
- 29:54Speaker 11: because we've done a lot with our culvert ordnance as well,
- 29:56Speaker 11: and that's another issue where we're making sure that we're
- 29:59Speaker 11: keeping these air is cleaner to prevent flooding. But I
- 30:01Speaker 11: want to thank you for calling in and I look
- 30:03Speaker 11: forward to hearing from Astrod and maybe even be able
- 30:05Speaker 11: to talk to you personally from my office to get
- 30:08Speaker 11: these issues taken care of. And I promise you we're
- 30:09Speaker 11: going to work on them, and I believe we're going
- 30:11Speaker 11: to get them taken care of. But thank you so
- 30:12Speaker 11: much for your call.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Thanks Jennifer. We appreciate that.
- 30:15Speaker 2: A text message coming in for commission Wheeler from A
- 30:17Speaker 2: six eighty one four seven four for Commissioner Wheeler, would
- 30:20Speaker 2: you consider a sign up list for pickups of those
- 30:23Speaker 2: who do not have transportation for cleanup.
- 30:25Speaker 11: You know, we actually looked into that, we're continuing to
- 30:28Speaker 11: look into that. That's going to have to be a
- 30:29Speaker 11: pilot program. It's not something that we're going to we
- 30:31Speaker 11: want to come out publicly and promise because I think
- 30:34Speaker 11: we're going to get a lot of people signing up
- 30:36Speaker 11: for that and We've got to make sure that these
- 30:37Speaker 11: are individuals that don't have the ability to bring the
- 30:41Speaker 11: debris to us. We don't want to have people abusing
- 30:44Speaker 11: that and next thing, you know, we're using taxpayer dollars
- 30:47Speaker 11: to pay for a lot of trucks on the road
- 30:48Speaker 11: on that day to get them picked up. But it
- 30:51Speaker 11: is something that we've discussed internally, something that we're looking at,
- 30:54Speaker 11: and we want to make sure again that it's efficient.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 30:57Speaker 11: You know, I don't want somebody who says, well, I'll
- 30:58Speaker 11: just sign up for this pickup program because I don't
- 31:00Speaker 11: have to get up this morning and deliver it myself.
- 31:03Speaker 11: This program is to be cost efficient to tax payers,
- 31:06Speaker 11: but to keep our roadways clean, our waters clean, and
- 31:09Speaker 11: our communities clean.
- 31:11Speaker 2: These are huge events and they're really important. If you've
- 31:14Speaker 2: been at home or of any kind that you've collected stuff.
- 31:16Speaker 2: There's stuff at airhouse. I promise stuff that you probably
- 31:18Speaker 2: need to get rid of and take advantage of one
- 31:21Speaker 2: of these things. Commission Lance Wheeler has joined us this morning.
- 31:24Speaker 2: I think we pretty much ran out all of our time.
- 31:25Speaker 2: We had a pretty good conversation here talking about the cleanup,
- 31:27Speaker 2: mostly having a lot of stuff that we need to
- 31:29Speaker 2: get to one thing that you did send me some
- 31:30Speaker 2: information on, and that is the single tracks from the
- 31:33Speaker 2: hat Field and the Boy Trail that that you've really
- 31:37Speaker 2: had a great growth of that that's coming up. And
- 31:38Speaker 2: one of the things I just wanted to highlight it
- 31:40Speaker 2: on the information that you sent me was the uptick
- 31:42Speaker 2: of sales that are now from West Virginia residents. And
- 31:45Speaker 2: there's been a lot of I've heard a lot of
- 31:46Speaker 2: chatter about that as far as the in state, out
- 31:49Speaker 2: of state and West Virginia resources and stuff like that.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I feel that that is a really cool thing. You've
- 31:54Speaker 2: not only had a seventeen percent increase in the amount
- 31:56Speaker 2: of permits that you're giving out, but forty two percent
- 31:58Speaker 2: now are in state.
- 31:59Speaker 4: That's pretty amazing.
- 32:00Speaker 11: Listen, we got Hatfilm McCoy to come to Canall County
- 32:03Speaker 11: and it is incredible that we've seen the economic development
- 32:06Speaker 11: drive from this. But also what we've seen from it
- 32:09Speaker 11: is the amount of locals taking advantage of this. I mean,
- 32:12Speaker 11: this is forty five miles of trails for dirt bikes
- 32:16Speaker 11: that individuals can go out with their dirt bikes, maybe
- 32:19Speaker 11: they rent them, maybe they take their own, but not
- 32:21Speaker 11: only what you mentioned are out of state people coming in.
- 32:24Speaker 11: I was told that a RV from Canada of six
- 32:28Speaker 11: bikers came drove from Canada to Tornado, West Virginia overnight
- 32:33Speaker 11: just to come to these trails on a weekend. But
- 32:35Speaker 11: we're seeing a lot of locals. I've gone out there
- 32:37Speaker 11: and talked to them. These are fathers with their children
- 32:40Speaker 11: that they're learning how to ride a dirt bike with
- 32:42Speaker 11: creating memories, getting outdoors off of the PlayStations in the Xbox.
- 32:47Speaker 11: I mean, this is an incredible driver. You talk to
- 32:49Speaker 11: anyone Tornado small businesses, they are loving this program. But
- 32:53Speaker 11: it's also bringing a lot of good residents and giving
- 32:56Speaker 11: them something to do that we've grown up, you know,
- 32:59Speaker 11: as a thirty six year old from Saint Albans growing up,
- 33:01Speaker 11: there was always what do we do?
- 33:03Speaker 4: What is it for the kids?
- 33:05Speaker 11: This is an excellent opportunity for the kids, those who
- 33:07Speaker 11: want to learn to ride dirt bikes and those who
- 33:10Speaker 11: are experienced. It's an incredible event. I'm proud of that
- 33:14Speaker 11: that we were able to put that in. This is
- 33:15Speaker 11: about economic development, This is about giving back to the community,
- 33:18Speaker 11: and it's been highly successful. Just last week and we
- 33:21Speaker 11: had over two hundred bikes on those crowds.
- 33:23Speaker 4: That's incredible, and it's an apple free experience. You can
- 33:26Speaker 4: do it without.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I mean you might use it the applicant, but anyway,
- 33:29Speaker 2: you don't have to have an app to rade the thing,
- 33:31Speaker 2: you know, which is interesting in this day and age.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I need to let the commissioner go. I understand, we
- 33:34Speaker 2: have one more phone call. We only got about ninet
- 33:36Speaker 2: seconds left. Here'll go ahead and put the caller one. What's
- 33:38Speaker 2: your first name?
- 33:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hey Eddie. We'll go ahead.
- 33:42Speaker 14: This is West Saturday. I just thought to Natalie when
- 33:45Speaker 14: she was on there a couple of weeks ago, and
- 33:47Speaker 14: she was going to get with Shelley Moore Capso about
- 33:50Speaker 14: these abandoned from Second Avenue back to the underpass of
- 33:56Speaker 14: Florida Street, the abandoned railroad crossing the head. Everybody thinks
- 34:01Speaker 14: she's a dump for some reason, and they just throw
- 34:05Speaker 14: their tresh out. And we had to live with it
- 34:07Speaker 14: in our neighborhood. And it caught on fire last year,
- 34:11Speaker 14: as you were well aware of. It melted. It melted
- 34:14Speaker 14: the siding on the whole side of my house. I mean,
- 34:18Speaker 14: it's just an actually waiting to happen. And is there
- 34:22Speaker 14: any way that we can get some grants? She said,
- 34:25Speaker 14: maybe you get Michelle Moore Capito. I've called her office,
- 34:29Speaker 14: but if Flance could help me anyway at all, check
- 34:33Speaker 14: into this from Second Avenue back. It's a contaminated environmental
- 34:38Speaker 14: nightmare because that Kreasik ran in the ground for so
- 34:43Speaker 14: many years.
- 34:44Speaker 11: Well, I'm a West Side boy right now. Anyways, I
- 34:46Speaker 11: know exactly what you're talking about, Eddie. Yeah, we're going
- 34:47Speaker 11: to definitely look into that. I don't know where Natalie
- 34:50Speaker 11: is on what she's been working on. You know, the
- 34:53Speaker 11: great thing about three commissioners is that we can all
- 34:55Speaker 11: separate a little bit and work on so many things.
- 34:57Speaker 11: But what I want to do is make sure that
- 34:58Speaker 11: we look into that, take get it. Taking care of
- 35:00Speaker 11: that'll be something that will work with the City of
- 35:02Speaker 11: Charleston with you know, partnering with them and seeing what
- 35:05Speaker 11: we can do. But Eddie, I appreciate that call, and
- 35:07Speaker 11: when I get into the office, we'll start working on
- 35:10Speaker 11: that and seeing if we can get some answers.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Appreciate the call, Eddie, Thank you so much for being
- 35:13Speaker 2: our last caller today. For Commissioner Willer and Commissioner Willer,
- 35:16Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Man.
- 35:17Speaker 2: We took some phone calls to address some important economic
- 35:19Speaker 2: and clean up pishes. I think we did a good surface, Tona.
- 35:21Speaker 11: I love it when I get to come on here
- 35:23Speaker 11: and talk to my constituents and help and do my
- 35:25Speaker 11: job and you know, solving their problems. So thank you
- 35:28Speaker 11: so much for having me.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Really appreciate it. Thanks for your time. We're gonna go
- 35:30Speaker 2: ahead and take a break. When we come back, we're

- 38:24Speaker 19: He's going to be a Nitro for the opening of
- 38:26Speaker 19: the Little League World Series this Saturday. Joe Stevens was
- 38:29Speaker 19: the one earlier to talk about that. I want to
- 38:30Speaker 19: go ahead and replay this interview for as much of
- 38:32Speaker 19: it as I can. Here is Dave Weekly with former
- 38:35Speaker 19: Reds third baseman Chris Sabo from Tuesday from Metro News Hotline.
- 38:38Speaker 20: We're joined now by former red third baseman Chris Sabo,
- 38:40Speaker 20: who's going to be in Nitro for the opening of
- 38:43Speaker 20: Nitro Little League this Saturday. Going to be the grand
- 38:46Speaker 20: marshal of the parade. Signed some autographs at Nitro High School.
- 38:50Speaker 20: That'll be between noon and two. Chris, how you doing.
- 38:52Speaker 12: Thanks for coming on the show, Noah, thanks for having me.
- 38:55Speaker 20: Yea not a pro.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Let me ask you did you play little league baseball?
- 39:00Speaker 12: I did not. I did not. I grew up in
- 39:03Speaker 12: the City of Detroit and city boy and we just
- 39:08Speaker 12: sort of played like rec league and we played in
- 39:10Speaker 12: the streets. Well, he didn't start playing organized ball until
- 39:13Speaker 12: I was you know, high school, that kind of stuff.
- 39:16Speaker 20: Hey, you know, there's so many There's so many things
- 39:19Speaker 20: I wanted to ask you, but I'm going to start
- 39:21Speaker 20: by asking you about your former college teammate, Barry Larkin.
- 39:25Speaker 20: You both were at the University of Michigan together. Tell
- 39:28Speaker 20: us something about Barry Larkin from his college days that
- 39:30Speaker 20: we may not know.
- 39:33Speaker 12: Barry Larkin, Well, I was a couple of years older
- 39:35Speaker 12: and Barry my junior year was his freshman year.
- 39:39Speaker 4: He was great.
- 39:40Speaker 12: As soon as he came in, he was great. I
- 39:43Speaker 12: believe he was on a football scholarship when he was there.
- 39:45Speaker 12: He was a great football player. And Cincinnati Moehler and
- 39:50Speaker 12: I think Bo Shambacker, who was a coach in Michigan
- 39:52Speaker 12: at the time, let him play baseball, and obviously it
- 39:56Speaker 12: was a better choice. And Barry's in the Hall of Fame.
- 39:58Speaker 20: Yeah, he's in the Hall of Fame. You know, you
- 40:00Speaker 20: were a second round pick for the Reds. But you know,
- 40:03Speaker 20: when you look at the way guys get rushed to
- 40:06Speaker 20: the big leagues today, baseball's a little bit different than
- 40:08Speaker 20: it was when you were coming up in the in
- 40:10Speaker 20: the in the mid eighties, but you know, you were
- 40:12Speaker 20: a second round pick. But man, you were in the
- 40:14Speaker 20: minor leagues for a while. It took a while for
- 40:17Speaker 20: you to get an opportunity to get to the show.
- 40:20Speaker 20: Were there any times when you were in the minor
- 40:21Speaker 20: leagues thinking hey, I may not be able to make
- 40:24Speaker 20: it to the major leagues.
- 40:26Speaker 12: No, not really. You gotta understand, you know, forty years ago,
- 40:29Speaker 12: I mean it was it was pretty standard to play three,
- 40:33Speaker 12: four or five years in the minor leagues to learn
- 40:35Speaker 12: your trade. He used to say, you needed almost two
- 40:40Speaker 12: thousand bats in the minors before you're ready for the
- 40:43Speaker 12: big leagues, unless you're a pitcher. A pitchers seemed to
- 40:47Speaker 12: get there a little quicker, but not much. But you know,
- 40:50Speaker 12: you gotta understand, I had Buddy Bell ahead of me.
- 40:52Speaker 12: It was a great player, right, and so that probably
- 40:56Speaker 12: pulled me back a year or two. But honestly, back then,
- 41:00Speaker 12: that was pretty standard. You went all the way to
- 41:02Speaker 12: a ballaaa and then got your shot for the big leagues.
- 41:06Speaker 12: You know, you mentioned, Yeah, they don't have as many
- 41:09Speaker 12: minor league players now, so I mean they got a
- 41:12Speaker 12: rush guys up, maybe a little quicker than they did
- 41:14Speaker 12: forty years ago. Just because they've eliminated so many of
- 41:17Speaker 12: the teams.
- 41:18Speaker 20: We're talking about Chris Sabo, the former Reds third basement.
- 41:21Speaker 20: He'll be part of the celebration in Nitro to get
- 41:24Speaker 20: Little League started on Saturday. I wanted to ask you,
- 41:27Speaker 20: and you mentioned nineteen eighty eight. I want to ask
- 41:29Speaker 20: you about that season. I mean, you came to spring training.
- 41:33Speaker 20: I don't think there was anybody who thought you were
- 41:35Speaker 20: going to be in the starting line up on opening day,
- 41:36Speaker 20: but you were when Buddy Bell got hurt, and that
- 41:39Speaker 20: turned out to be quite a day for you. I mean,
- 41:41Speaker 20: you got your first major league hit, you stole a base.
- 41:44Speaker 20: You still got the record from that particular game, the
- 41:47Speaker 20: opener in nineteen eighty eight for the most successful fielding
- 41:50Speaker 20: chances handled by a third baseman. That was just one
- 41:53Speaker 20: of those days, right, and one of those days defensively
- 41:56Speaker 20: where the ball just key kept seeming to find you.
- 42:01Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean defensively, I mean it is way easier,
- 42:06Speaker 12: you know, I think most big leiggers wuld say the
- 42:07Speaker 12: same thing. Big difference between defense and offense. I mean,
- 42:11Speaker 12: I can never remember ever having a slump defensively, so
- 42:14Speaker 12: that was always the easy part of the game. The
- 42:15Speaker 12: hard part is trying to hit that ball. But I
- 42:19Speaker 12: don't remember that that many. I do remember getting that hit,
- 42:22Speaker 12: but I don't remember getting all those chances, which would
- 42:25Speaker 12: be unusual because third base doesn't get that many. You
- 42:28Speaker 12: get one or two a game, that's pretty much the norm.
- 42:31Speaker 20: Yeah, that's still the Major League record for successful fielding
- 42:34Speaker 20: chances by a third baseman. Hey, the nineteen ninety World Series.
- 42:38Speaker 20: You know, I covered that World Series and I remember
- 42:40Speaker 20: going into it. You know, Oakland was favored. Obviously they
- 42:43Speaker 20: had a great team, they had Dave Stewart and the
- 42:46Speaker 20: Reds really romped in that series. But what did you
- 42:49Speaker 20: What were you and your teammates thinking about before the
- 42:52Speaker 20: World Series began and you knew you were going to
- 42:54Speaker 20: have to play Oakland.
- 42:56Speaker 12: We were very confident. We thought Pittsburgh was a great team.
- 43:00Speaker 12: There's a struggle to beat them.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:02Speaker 12: Uh now back then we didn't play interleague, so but
- 43:05Speaker 12: we knew they had big sluggers and stuff like that.
- 43:07Speaker 12: But we thought our pitching would hold them down. Usually
- 43:10Speaker 12: good pitching and we had some you know, good right
- 43:13Speaker 12: handed sliders guys and stuff like that, so we thought
- 43:17Speaker 12: we were gonna win. I don't think we thought we
- 43:19Speaker 12: were going to sweep them, but we thought we were
- 43:21Speaker 12: the better team overall. We could we could do a
- 43:23Speaker 12: lot of stuff. We could heel grow, run bases, that
- 43:28Speaker 12: kind of stuff, and then good enough hitters. Maybe not
- 43:30Speaker 12: as much power as Oakland, Uh, but we can manufacture
- 43:34Speaker 12: a lot of stuff.
- 43:35Speaker 20: You know, everything gets magnified in the World Series. And
- 43:38Speaker 20: there's a whole host of great Major League hitters who
- 43:42Speaker 20: really didn't come through in the World Series. I mean
- 43:45Speaker 20: Ted Williams and Dave Winfield and Jose Canseco and maybe
- 43:49Speaker 20: most more recently somebody like Cody Bellinger. But man, you
- 43:52Speaker 20: came through in that series.
- 43:54Speaker 13: Uh.
- 43:56Speaker 20: You hit five eighty three in that in that World
- 43:59Speaker 20: Series against Oakland. Was there something about the pressure or
- 44:03Speaker 20: something about the bright lights that that made you come
- 44:05Speaker 20: to the front because you had just a great series
- 44:07Speaker 20: against Oakland.
- 44:10Speaker 12: No, I mean, uh, I never felt pressure. I mean
- 44:13Speaker 12: I was always excited to play big games. I mean
- 44:15Speaker 12: I won national championships playing hockey growing up. Yeah, Uh,
- 44:19Speaker 12: state championships in baseball, and we went to the College
- 44:22Speaker 12: World Series a few times when I was in college.
- 44:25Speaker 12: So so No, I mean I was a streaky hitter.
- 44:28Speaker 12: I was a two seventy hitter, so I mean, uh there.
- 44:31Speaker 12: I mean I didn't hit that great in the divisional series,
- 44:35Speaker 12: and I think I had a key home run or something,
- 44:38Speaker 12: but uh uh, I'd have the ebbs and flows and
- 44:41Speaker 12: it just so happened. The World Series is one of
- 44:43Speaker 12: those times or everything, my timing, everything was really good.
- 44:46Speaker 12: I mean, but that was that's That's how I played
- 44:48Speaker 12: my whole career offensively.
- 44:50Speaker 14: Uh.
- 44:51Speaker 12: In the major leagues. I mean I was either really
- 44:53Speaker 12: good or or mediocre. We just happened to be that
- 44:56Speaker 12: World Series. I was really good.
- 44:58Speaker 20: We're starting to wind down with Chris ba, the former
- 45:00Speaker 20: third baseman of the Cincinnati Reds, is going to be
- 45:02Speaker 20: part of the opening day Little League celebration in Nitro
- 45:06Speaker 20: on Saturday.
- 45:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:07Speaker 20: You mentioned hockey. Now, you were a goalie, right, did
- 45:10Speaker 20: you ever think about professional hockey in your future? You
- 45:12Speaker 20: did grow up in Detroit.
- 45:14Speaker 12: Oh yeah, I mean honestly, growing up, growing up, I
- 45:17Speaker 12: was more known for hockey growing up, and most people
- 45:20Speaker 12: in the city assumed I'd be playing in NHL. And
- 45:24Speaker 12: I did play junior hockey up in Ontario when I
- 45:28Speaker 12: was seventeen, and I loved it. But back then, forty
- 45:33Speaker 12: five years ago or whatever it was, you had to
- 45:35Speaker 12: make a choice. And when I got to college, I
- 45:37Speaker 12: always wanted to go to Michigan. Yeah, that was my
- 45:39Speaker 12: favorite school, and I had to make a choice. I
- 45:42Speaker 12: mean every year I was at Michigan, the hockey program
- 45:44Speaker 12: always asked me to play. And maybe nowadays you could
- 45:48Speaker 12: play both, but back then you had to choose. And
- 45:51Speaker 12: I always liked hitting baseballs, so that sort of went
- 45:54Speaker 12: out over hockey.
- 45:55Speaker 20: Chris, what was your relationship like with Pete Rose? I
- 45:57Speaker 20: mean it's well documented that Pete thought he saw something
- 46:01Speaker 20: in himself in you and the way you hustled when
- 46:04Speaker 20: you were on the field. What was your relationship with Rose?
- 46:06Speaker 12: Like? No, I love Pete. He gave me an opportunity,
- 46:10Speaker 12: always believed in me. Actually, I was with him the
- 46:13Speaker 12: day before he died in Nashville, So no, I was
- 46:17Speaker 12: like him. I mean I didn't hang with him off
- 46:19Speaker 12: the field or anything like that, but baseball wise, on
- 46:22Speaker 12: the field, he really helped me. He was a very
- 46:26Speaker 12: I don't know if he'd been around Pete that much,
- 46:28Speaker 12: but he was a very optimistic guy. He was always
- 46:31Speaker 12: positive and and it sort of rubbed off on you.
- 46:34Speaker 12: I thought he was great. He was a great manager
- 46:36Speaker 12: in my opinion. Then all that gambling stuff happened and
- 46:40Speaker 12: he couldn't manage anymore. But he was great. I really
- 46:43Speaker 12: enjoyed him, and I was fortunate enough to see him
- 46:45Speaker 12: probably at least once or twice every year for the
- 46:48Speaker 12: last you know, before he died.
- 46:50Speaker 20: You know, when people think about you now, I mean,
- 46:53Speaker 20: you were a three time All Star, you were a
- 46:55Speaker 20: starter on the Reds World Series team in nineteen ninety,
- 46:59Speaker 20: you were Nash League Rookie of the Year. You're in
- 47:02Speaker 20: the Reds Hall of Fame. But when people think about you,
- 47:05Speaker 20: sometimes they get the mental picture and all they want
- 47:07Speaker 20: to think about are those respecs?
- 47:09Speaker 19: Man?
- 47:09Speaker 20: Where are those? Do you still have them?
- 47:12Speaker 12: No? I don't have I actually get asked that question quite.
- 47:15Speaker 14: A bit.
- 47:17Speaker 12: Now. Actually I had two pair. When I be tired,
- 47:22Speaker 12: I still had like a couple pair, and I came
- 47:24Speaker 12: to the Reds Hall of Fame. So the Reds Hall
- 47:27Speaker 12: of Fame have them somewhere. So if you go to
- 47:29Speaker 12: the Reds Hall of Fame before a Reds game, I'm
- 47:32Speaker 12: sure you'll be able to find them in some of
- 47:33Speaker 12: their displays. Yeah, but I don't have any at the house,
- 47:36Speaker 12: and I think the only thing I have at house
- 47:38Speaker 12: is I do have my World Series game War in
- 47:42Speaker 12: Jerseys nice, and I think I have a bat. I
- 47:46Speaker 12: mean they're all packed away, but I think I have
- 47:48Speaker 12: a bat, and I know I have the World Series
- 47:50Speaker 12: rings somewhere too.
- 47:51Speaker 20: All right, Well, Chris, listen, thanks for coming on the
- 47:54Speaker 20: show and spending some time with us talking about the
- 47:56Speaker 20: nineteen ninety World Series in your career, and enjoy your
- 47:59Speaker 20: trip up to Nitro. You'll be part of the opening
- 48:02Speaker 20: day Little League Day celebration and you'll be the Grand
- 48:05Speaker 20: Marshall of parade on Saturday. Have a safe trip up here,
- 48:07Speaker 20: and thanks for joining us today.
- 48:09Speaker 12: Thank you. I'm looking forward to it. Always enjoyed going
