Herbie: Now I'm Herbie who likes Bud Light now. Elvin: My name is Elvin. Shamus: Or at scooperheroesnj.com. It's good to see you, bud. Herbie: Yeah, well I Yeah, man. Well actually my my big question is one, these butt lot limes are going down nice. How do you guys know each other? Shamus: ⁓ yes they are. Elvin: worked together for years. Shamus: Yeah. Elvin was one of those guys that worked state law enforcement with me and when he hit the ground he hit it running. He was one of them up and count 'cause I really don't like I help a lot of rookies out. Yeah. ⁓ the last couple of classes before I left. Actually I can't even say before I left 'cause he's been there for a minute now. Nice. ⁓ you know, you're just kinda like, Yay, ⁓ but he one of those guys. I like, All right, this guy's an all star. ⁓ All right. we started kicking it and been friends ever since. ⁓ On and the job. Herbie: Good shit, man. Shamus: So but he's here today to tell us about paintballing. Yeah. Yeah. But before we do that, tell the people a little bit about yourself. Like some ⁓ you know, where you grew up, hobbies, favorite team. I know who your favorite football team is. Go Birds. Elvin: Well I grew up in Camden. That's ⁓ probably the biggest part of my life. ⁓ paintball is obviously one of my passions or was one of my passions. ⁓ Herbie: Yeah. Shamus: Yeah, you just recently got out of it, right? I did. Elvin: ⁓ It was the best worst thing I guess that happened to me. But ⁓ there's so much when it comes to ⁓ paintball, I guess. Shamus: Yeah, I was kinda cause when you told me when I first moved out here and I told you I moved out, you like dude, I'm right around the corner at ⁓ that place on two ⁓ six. Yeah. That I guess you owned at one point. Elvin: Yeah yeah, so I owned ⁓ I didn't own the land, I owned the company that ⁓ it was like a sister to the now QuickShop people that's there now. Next to ⁓ Mighty Joe's. ⁓ and ⁓ Shamus: For those of you that don't know, that is the deli with the big gorilla run about on two ⁓ six. That's Chamong, right? Yes. Herbie: Yeah, King of Elvin: ⁓ but yeah, ⁓ so e every time somebody talks about paintball they say ⁓ they w think about the woods, right? Everybody that's the first thing. ⁓ yeah. Let's go to the woods, let's go play paintball. But that's not what I did. Shamus: That's called skirmish though, right? Isn't that like a different that's just a little game? That's game, right? Elvin: Yeah, yeah, that's like ⁓ that's the actual place. Skirmish is an actual place. Where they have big games and stuff like that where they do ⁓ Invade of Normandy and all that type of stuff. ⁓ that's scenario type games. ⁓ but yeah, I I did the more competitive part of paintball. ⁓ but I did start in the woods, so I have love for both. Shamus: Okay. Herbie: So like the one that you did before, what was the terrain like? 'Cause you know you did those like the woods type stuff, but the other one obviously has like terrain and stuff like that and obstacles. Elvin: Yeah, so it's it was ⁓ turf. We played more on turf n ⁓ when I first started we didn't play on turf, we played on pr on grass, right? Yeah. Dirt, grass, whatever it was. ⁓ but now everybody's turned to tur turf. Everybody wants to play clean. Yeah, you know, but ⁓ it was very fast. Yeah, it's yeah, yeah. It wasn't hiding. It was more it was strategic. Yeah, you know, it's like chess. Yeah. ⁓ which Shamus: Say you wanna play fan. Elvin: Makes it more enjoyable, I guess. Herbie: Is it almost like too so almost like breach and stuff too? Like where you like breach into a room or breach into an area and stuff, everyone just fans out and it's start plugging people. Elvin: Actually it's more like if I could compare it to something I would compare it to like like a basketball game, right? Shamus: Here I might have a definite. Paintball is a competitive team sport where players eliminate opponents using die filled gelatin caps, combining strategy, skill, and adrenaline. Depending on how it is played, most games are five on five in a war type urban setting. I guess that's like the inflatables and all that stuff. Okay. Paintball was invented on June twenty seventh, nineteen eighty one, in Henneker, New Hampshire, by Hayes, Noel, and Charles Gaines, who used Nell Spot cattle marking guns to settle a debate about survival skulls in the woods. Did you know that? Elvin: Well. I did. For the the marking of the cows and all that I did I did I did. I didn't know that. I didn't know the year but I did know how it started. Shamus: Yeah. The first commercial paintball field opened in nineteen eighty two and the sport has since grown into a global recreational and competitive activity. The first game's winner famously won without firing a shot. I I have to do more research on that because I'd love to know how that work. Herbie: Probably just beat the shit out of each other since a pistol whipped everybody. Shamus: Walked up with a paintbrush and like smack somebody in the cheek with it. So Elvin: Yeah. So they used to use red paintballs and that's how they used to mark. And they stopped doing that just because of that. Yeah, because if people got hurt, how are you gonna find that? Shamus: Yeah, 'cause it would simulate blood, right? Really? Yeah. ⁓ okay, I gotcha. Okay. Herbie: Yeah. Shamus: Yeah, I guess that does make sense. So you owned a place now before you owned that place, I'm assuming I know you played on teams 'cause you used to travel nationally and all that stuff. How did that start? Elvin: I did travel. I played since high school. I started playing woods ball, and then I met a guy named Hector at one of the local fields around here. It's ⁓ called Picasso Lake. ⁓ It's in Williamstown. and from he decided to start up a team for speedball, which is the competitive part of paintball, right? ⁓ where there's inflatables, it's kind of mirrored on both sides. So whatever's I see on my side, they see on their side. and yeah, we we kinda grew a big bond and started playing right after an academy actually I I I joined his team and we hit the ground and we won so many tournaments. Shamus: Now how does that work? Like do you is it almost like say the NCAA tournament where somebody has like a final game in Alcoholmet and like different regions play each other and then you keep moving up or is it like is there like a national tournament or do you just play in tournaments that were hosted by other paintball companies or that? Elvin: Yeah, so s or all they have national, right? They have local events. Yeah. ⁓ when we first start when I first started anyway, there was plenty of l locals events everywhere. So you would go to every local event, go play and almost like ⁓ the N C double A tournament, right? You you you'll play ten brackets you'll be brackets and Shamus: Yeah. Elvin: The more you win, the higher your seed is, and then you play at the end, ⁓ semifinals, all that type of stuff. ⁓ and then once I got more and more involved into it, then I went national. And that's where you travel to Florida. We went to Vegas, Texas a bunch of times. That's cool. ⁓ and it was it's pretty it's pretty cool, right? It's has pro they have pro players. Shamus: Okay. Elvin: semi pro players, they have divisions like any other sport, ⁓ sponsors. It's pretty good. Shamus: Nice. Any win any big money doing it or decent money ⁓ Elvin: Honest there's not many sports that you can make money off of, especially something like that. ⁓ you do make money, ⁓ and depends on you know it's a lot of strategy to try to make the money, but ⁓ you really don't. Shamus: People as much. You send a breaking. Elvin: Yeah, you break at at best. You pay for your flight's great. If you break even it's great. But ⁓ no, you definitely don't ⁓ make any money. ⁓ it's more a way to get away from real life, right? And turn into a little kid and yeah, hang out with a whole bunch of degenerate people. ⁓ Shamus: Yeah. Now you were saying paintballs are spherical gelatin capsules filled with non-toxic water-soluble biodegradable material, often including food coloring, water, and polyethylene glycol. Whatever that is. Paint guns, also called markers, are powered by compressed air or carbon dioxide and were originally designed for marking trees and animals. We called that. Modern markers can shoot up to 15 paintballs per second, with paintballs traveling at speeds up to 200 miles an hour in distances over 50. Herbie: Yeah. Shamus: I have a question. Go ahead. Is this truth or myth? Because when we used to go when I was a kid, ⁓ my uncles were they they hunt, they do all that stuff, and you know, when it wasn't hunting season, they'd go paintballing. So the one and they had like this huge farm. So they told me my brother one time, ⁓ you city guys, and we were kids, we were fifteen. They're like, We got them frozen paintballs just for you city cats. And I'm what the hell's a frozen paint? Do they do people freeze them? Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: I mean people people have. Shamus: Yeah. You get hit with a two hundred mild hour goddamn piece of concrete coming. Herbie: Yeah. ⁓ Elvin: It won't go straight, let's just say that. ⁓ the concept sounds great, but it doesn't go straight. Shamus: Well that's what ⁓ my uncle said, like when I got older, he's like when they freeze they kind of expand and it kinda throws off their velocity and all that stuff. Sometimes they even get jammed in a gun. ⁓ Elvin: Yeah, paintballs are weird, right? But it's not like a r a bullet, right? A bullet is consistent every time. Paintballs, the weather changes them, they swell up a little bit. Shamus: That's another thing they bought up like when we were a kid. They're like if it's a hot day, like you have to adjust like your 'cause they had like them hot y I'm sure you know they had like the high speed guns where you could adjust their rate, their distance, all that stuff. Yeah, so on hot days and compared to it's almost like golf, like like when the sun moves, the grass moves, yeah. It's the same thing. So like when the sun move if it's really hot, if it's really cold you have to adjust all kinds of Elvin: Yeah. Herbie: Pleasant plus if you think about it. Like a paintball's not really it's it's just it's just like a like you know, a musket ball back in the day, man. So it's just like there's no really ballistics or like anything like that for it to be able to cut through the air. It's just like Shamus: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So there's no Elvin: And it has a problem. It has a seam. Like it has a seam. So a little b a just a little change in it just it could throw your whole day off. And that's that's that's won us and and lost us case. Herbie: Yeah, got a little curl. Shamus: Yeah, it does have a seat. Herbie: Yeah. That sucks too many because you could be actually dead on and and next thing you know the ball just go. Elvin: So it said two hundred, right? Two hundred. Now it's over two hundred. It's at two ninety nine. Shamus: Yeah, up to two hundred miles an hour. Well how fast does a bullet Yeah gone How fast does a bullet go? Elvin: a b a pay meter. No no not a millimeter. Shamus: No. A bullet? I don't know. Nine millimeters. Elvin: Pretty quick. ⁓ but again, the quality of the paintball, it there's so many factors about paintball that if the it's not a perfect situation, you have a bad day and you spend the money. ⁓ Shamus: ⁓ no. ⁓ okay, just to hit on what you were talking about, gameplay and variations. Paintball is played in teams with official players. They have up to 15 players per team, though non-official games can involve 40 to 50 players. The sport has several variants. Woods ball, which you mentioned, is played in natural environments with large areas and strategic objectives. Speedball. Great game. Played on smaller flat fields with inflatable artificial obstacles for fast paced action. That's what your team did, right? Yes, that's what we did. And then scenario games, often theme missions or storylines, sometimes with hundreds or thousands of participants, which is skirmish, right? Elvin: Covid. Yes. Okay. Yeah, there's there's three three kinds of paintball ⁓ I guess scenarios. You got the speedball, right? You got the scenario and you got the just the casual go out and play with your friends and shoot them up. Shamus: Okay. players are required to wear protective gear, including goggles and masks, to prevent injuries from close range hits. markers are generally classified as air guns and are illegal for adults in most countries, though regulations may vary. Let me ask you this. ⁓ am sure ⁓ this industry is just like any other sport. where gear is everything. ⁓ yeah. When certain companies are like Nike, Under Armour, all that stuff are involved and you know, everybody wants to look their best when they're out there. Yeah, absolutely. 'Cause like Dion said, if you look good, you play good, you play good, they pay good. So that's not Elvin: Yeah, yeah. That that saying is definitely in paintball. ⁓ but yeah, they're ⁓ it's just like any other sport, right? Companies all and they all probably get made in the same place, but that everybody wants that that main company to be their sponsor. right now you have a couple. so it depends on the gear that you want. You have ⁓ Shamus: And what company is that? Elvin: I guess you would say the the Ferrari of Paintball would be planning eclipse for guns. Okay. Then you have ⁓ ⁓ maybe the Mercedes would be a luxe. You know, there's so there's there's about six companies of pinkball guns. ⁓ and they're all and they probably do the same thing. You know what I mean? I mean there's maybe minor things, right? You get a cheaper a Honda over I mean a a cord over a civic. You know what I mean? They're a little cheaper, they do kinda play the same, but a lot of it goes to more team stuff than it does the equipment. Shamus: I gotcha. Well that's what we always said in military. Like look at all these dudes, They got like all the scopes and da da da. But across the way you just got like this ⁓ I don't even know what they were I I can't say 'cause I don't want to you know. But like they would just roll up with like an AK forty seven from like nineteen forty eight, just like ⁓ it's like and it it does the same thing you ⁓ if you can name ⁓ so Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: To be honest, the paint the paintballs are probably more important than the gunners are. Yeah. The right company that has that keeps the paint refrigerated correctly. You know, if you don't if you don't keep it correctly refrigerated while you're playing, because you're in the sun, there's nothing once you grab the paint from the truck, you have to maintain it now. Herbie: You Shamus: so you're telling me your ⁓ paintball holder things, like the things that like we use gun clips at the job or clips. ⁓ refrigerator or they No. Elvin: They're called Shamus: They're not insulated. They're just so basically you're just taking them out of the fridge and okay, let's rip and bah and then done. Any leftovers go back in the fridge? Elvin: Well, you try to put ⁓ you try to get ⁓ out of the sun, right? ⁓ some people carry coolers and put ⁓ in there until the next match. All right. Herbie: Okay. Shamus: See what else we got here? Paintball is played in over 100 countries across six continents. It has professional leagues, tournaments, and organized comp competition compet yeah competitions worldwide, including the British Paintball League and the South African Regional Paintball League. The sport continues to grow in regions like the Ara United Arab Emirates and Thailand. And a couple fun facts is paintballs are safe to consume, but taste terrible. Have you ever eaten? Elvin: Have you in a paintball? I have. ⁓ should be one now. Shamus: You haven't eaten a tie pod, have you? Herbie: Yeah, I was gonna say but Shamus: The first automatic paintball gun, the Tippman SMG 60, was made in 1989. Did you know that? Elvin: I did not know it was made, but startup gun. Shamus: Anthony Yeah. I'm sure do people collect paintball stuff? Like the history of it and all that. I was gonna say that might be a good get then. The first one that's automatic. Anthony Kelly of Australia holds a Guinness world record for catching eleven unbroken paintballs blindfolded in two minutes. What? Catching ⁓ Doesn't say blindfolded. Blindfolded no less, but just catching ⁓ yeah. Elvin: Some people do. I've seen I've seen a couple of good collections. Herbie: What's Shamus: If you could do it with teeth, I'd be impressed. Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: Catch it too, yeah. That that's Shamus: I would like to know what year that was because like he said, the velocity keeps getting so maybe in the early days they were already doing Elvin: Yeah, you got paint catch a paintball under two hundred yard, I two hundred ⁓ feet per second. Shamus: Nice. Yeah, 'cause sometimes they get stuck in your clot and they don't explode. Elvin: Those are the ones that hurt. The ones that don't explode hurt. Shamus: Do they generally hurt? Or do they make ⁓ now where as soon as they hit something they just explode? Elvin: They do explode, but playing speedball, y you're getting shot. Yeah, it's it's right. ⁓ my my barrel could be right at your face you know. Herbie: Yeah, it's hurting. ⁓ Shamus: Well that and it's like tattoos somebody told me too. Like if you get hit in the meaty part you're okay. But if you get hit like up under this arm right here or, you know, in the inner thigh or something, it's it's a motherfucker. Herbie: Everyone's just running around doing John Wick on each other, man. Two feet from each other. Shamus: Paintball was the third most popular extreme sport in 2006 with over 10 million players globally. Paintball combines physical activity, strategy, and social interaction, making it both a fun recreational activity and competitive sport with a rich history and global appeal. How many friends have you made over the years? You still hang out with all those dudes or I hang out. Okay. Elvin: a a couple of ⁓ now still. They're more like family now at that point, you know. Yeah. You know, it's not it it it was a I say I brought a lot of people together, I feel like. You know? We we created a lot of group groups to become friends and pretty much family. Like I said, it's it was it was good. Especially that's probably the best part about it. Herbie: Yeah, 'cause like you guys are hanging out all the time and stuff and it's just you know That brings like the c you know, camaraderie, you know. Elvin: Yeah. It was good. It was good. That was the big that that actually was p probably one of the best things. Shamus: Dude, when you're on the road, like you said, you know the Florida vector when you're when the boys are on the road we got deployed a bunch of times, but and and like I said, and when we got to the place we're going it sucked. But ⁓ going to and from, man, it was awesome. Herbie: Yeah. you talk about strategy and all that stuff and ⁓ Elvin: Honestly the the off the field stuff probably made you play better on the field, right? 'Cause you knew what each other were doing. Yeah. Shamus: Yeah. And like you just want to protect a guy like this is our team, man. Nobody comes in here and screws at us, man. This is us. Herbie: That's right. Yeah. So like like if you have like a team of five, did you guys have like rotation of like maybe like fifteen dudes on your squad so you rotate people? Elvin: The best I mean, ⁓ there's always a number that you don't want to go over just because like I said, it's a sport that you p pay to play, right? So it's not like basketball where you can ⁓ there's there's still a little Johnny in there. He's not that good. Let's go. Yeah. You know, you're not paying anything, right? Let's go sit on the bench. ⁓ but paintball that's kinda what it is, right? You you have you try to have eight guys, maybe nine. Herbie: ⁓ Elvin: And there's players that don't get us the the chance to play 'cause you're trying to win, right? Yeah. It it sucks 'cause you want everyone to play and you want everybody to play well, but it it it's just not the Herbie: Especially if you're in the groove and stuff too, man, 'cause you can have one dude where their their gun's not shooting right. Or you know, I could come across like they're shitty shitty bulls and they're not making they're not hitting the targets and there's one dude just lighting everybody up. Exactly. Like, yeah, we're keeping him in. Elvin: Exact then that's the thing. You always have your your your best players that have to play all the time and then you try to sprinkle in everybody else and you know and it Shamus: Well, just like anything else. Like when you're when you're a kid and you're playing basketball, like everybody should play and all that stuff. But when you get to the NBA, not everybody should play, right? So like you know you're on this bench and this is your job. If somebody gets hurt, tears a ligament or the gun malfunctions or something, then you can come in. But other than that, you're paying to come out here just to on the bench. And the the Elvin: Each match is it depending on your division, right? There's twelve minute matches and they it goes so fast and then you gotta win by four. Or ⁓ sorry, it's race to four, so you don't have much explainable. All right, so Shamus: Because people listening, all three of them are like, What Elvin: Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, so ⁓ ten minute match, right? ⁓ I'll just give a quick basis what speedball is. So you have five on five. ⁓ and your objective is to either eliminate all the players on the other side and hit the buzzer at the at the Herbie: Point system and all that shit. Shamus: Now one hit from one paintball eliminates that person. Elvin: you have refs, right? Like any other sport, you have about you're supposed to have at least eight to ten refs on the field at one time, right? Okay. And it's the hard I mean refing paintball is probably the hardest thing ever. Yeah. Because there's cheating. It's part of the game too. It's just who's the best cheater? There's flags, right? That can it it it alters the game. It's crazy. Cheaters. For example, you get shot, you try to wipe to major. Herbie: I'll see. Shamus: Okay. Elvin: Red card, yes. So it pulls one, it pulls you, and it pulls two other guys. So now you only have two players left on another field. Now they're coming down the field, right? And that's one point. Yeah. Now you go, all right, we're down one. Go back out there and say you lose again. Now you're down two. Now you have all the people that are on the bench that you try to get in, but do you put them in when you're losing? You know what I mean? It's it's one of those things. Okay. Shamus: ⁓ wow, okay. Elvin: And you go down three and now Shamus: What's the best of seven? Elvin: Best of four. So it's race two four. So yeah, yeah. So ⁓ now if the score is three-one, then you still have two more points to go because they they have to win a margin of four to to win the match. Or or ⁓ the time has to end. You can win one zero as long as the time ends. Yeah. ⁓ Shamus: ⁓ as soon as you went for yeah, Elvin: But yeah, that's a that's the basis of speedball. You either eliminate or you can actually touch the flat with players still left on the on the field, ⁓ enemies. Shamus: Okay, I gotcha. What was your strategy most of the time? Just hitting everybody instead of just hitting a buzzer? Do your research on the other team, see what they're weak. Elvin: It depends what the square like I said it's it's very strategic. It was very strategic. Herbie: Because you could have everyone like, you know, just doing like suppressing fire and then that one fast guy can run and get to the buzzer and pomp, you know, there it is, right? There's ⁓ point for the Elvin: couple of times actually ⁓ one of my guys actually acted like he got shot off off the buzzer and just walked all the way to the other side and pr pressed the buzzer. That's called It's called Deadmack walk ⁓ Deadman walk. Shamus: ⁓ dude, yeah. Now it it w if I see a guy just walking off like he got hit and then's coming up this way and I hit him again, do I get like a red Elvin: No, you don't. So if you over overshoot some refs we'll throw a minor pen penalty. It just pulls another player. Shamus: But I could look at a ref and go, I don't know if this guy's been hit yet. I can drill him. ⁓ yeah, for sure. Okay. Nobody's walk. Yeah, just showed him. Elvin: Yeah, yeah for I mean I always thought my guys Herbie: ⁓ yeah. Shamus: That's always my answer to everything. Just shoot them. Elvin: That was always our thing. We're we're gonna shoot you. One, it it throws your game off 'cause now you're mad because you get overshot and then you have to wipe them off because you have a time limit after the matches or after that point's over to get ready again to play again. So it's kinda like strat it's strategic for sure. Especially in the pros. 'Cause you can light the guy up all the way up and down and they have to wipe everybody down to that's crazy. And there's so many times where You know, the match is over and if that person hits the buzzer that got all lit up the point previously and the ref checks ⁓ and he has paint still on from the you don't know if it's new or old. That's a penalty and the point goes to you. Shamus: Yeah. Yeah. Let me ask you this. I get lit up in round one. ⁓ you're using y do you keep using the same color paint each round? 'Cause like if I get lit up on yellow and they wipe it off, but it the next round you hit me, I could just say, ⁓ that was and go like this before the ref sees and if he doesn't see it. If you don't see it Elvin: If you don't if the ref doesn't see that's it's a fair game, right? It's like any other sport. If the ref doesn't see Shamus: I just well I just figured if in the first round I would use yellow paint and then tell the refs like we got purple paint this time, so you know what I mean? Elvin: Here's the thing, when you comes to major when you go to like ⁓ major ⁓ leagues, they they all tend to keep the same color paint, no matter what the brand is. Okay. Just because of that factor, right? Okay. Shamus: Yeah, that's pretty cool, man. Herbie: Yeah, I gonna say and like it like not only that, like d there's guns and I also seen like like other type of weapons, like there's like grenades, like what other shit do they have in the Shamus: ⁓ I saw a paint grenade once. Yeah. And like you kind of and it just kinda like the tubes that throw paint at the end. Elvin: Yeah yeah. That's more ⁓ it's it's gimmicky, right? It's not there's claymores. But that's that's more for like Yeah, there's little claymores. Herbie: Yeah, Claymore's yeah I heard about that too. Imagine that is everyone. Shamus: Yeah, ⁓ Herbie: Or denamine. Elvin: Kind of similar. I mean I would say it's not similar, but it's like Shamus: Like a trigger? Like you bump all the trigger to Like you like bang Elvin: Yeah, yeah, it's like a trigger to it. ⁓ it's cool. I only seen it a couple of times. ⁓ there's like grenade launchers, it's kinda funny, and then ⁓ RPGs, yeah. Shamus: RPGs? ⁓ Herbie: Just lobbing a big bucket of paint. Elvin: And then you have ⁓ Shamus: They're probably just as accurate too. Because RPGs like real RPGs, they're like the buttons. No accuracy at all. Elvin: Almost like the b you know the potato ⁓ launchers? That's what it is. That's what exactly what it is. Herbie: That's awesome. That is cool. We got one. Yeah, I know. Shamus: Yeah. ⁓ my god. So when's the last time you played? I know you said you were getting out of it. Elvin: Well, I I'm definitely out of it now, but ⁓ last time I played, ⁓ Wow, ⁓ maybe two years ago. And we were we are funny enough, we got kicked out of the tournament. it was ⁓ No, no, we weren't getting rarity. We're actually beating everybody. So since I haven't played for years, that I I went to go play that tournament ⁓ just for fun. Shamus: For what? And boys getting rowdy. Elvin: Right w some of my boys that I haven't played with in a while. And, you know, sometimes it's like riding a bike and they didn't like the bike I was riding. Shamus: No, I gotcha. No, I gotcha. Herbie: Yeah. SEAL team six went into the tournament with the ⁓ Billy and his other five other buddies from ⁓ Tabernacle got their ass kicked. Yeah. Elvin: Yeah. Yeah yeah, they they didn't like that. So so I had to kinda concede I was like, all right, you know. Shamus: Is it a young man's game? Is it just like any other sport where like after a while you just kick like tip your hat and the game has passed me by, that kind of deal? Like all them old dudes that we used to work with that just would not fucking leave. Like the game of like law enforcement has passed you by, like go. Elvin: No, I'll There's plenty of It's probably the only one of the only sports that you can Shamus: Play until you're dead. Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: Play until you and play until you can move. Because the gun does all the work, right? You can sit in one bunker and shoot. Herbie: I see I seen some videos like just the big beefy just potato, macaroni, cheese eating, just big lumpy dude that you know hangs out in his mom's basement and just you know just walks steadily and just just blobbing paintballs all over the place. ⁓ Elvin: Yeah. Best shooters, those potato guys. Yeah, yeah. That's what that's like their best attribute. Shamus: ⁓ yeah, usually the episode guys are Yeah, I I went paintball on a couple times. I just remember thinking to myself, man, I'm ripping through these paintballs and holy shit they're expensive. Yeah. So so do you ⁓ do you you have no contact with paintball anymore? Like do you coach or do you teach or Elvin: Well I was coaching. I owned a team, coached, right? when I owned the field, ⁓ I was doing that too and working, so it was a lot. ⁓ but won, so I I I can't like I said, it was such a good experience. looking back at it, would I do it again? I don't know, but it was definitely fun. I can't I I'm not gonna complain. I met so many people. I had ⁓ so many you know, I ⁓ I don't that part. ⁓ Shamus: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah. Herbie: Yeah. ⁓ for sure. ⁓ Elvin: Yeah. A lot of memories, a lot of memories. Shamus: Let me ask you this. What was the biggest thing you ever won? Biggest tournament you ever won? Elvin: Biggest tournament we won was we won a major it's called NXL, right? That's the the biggest event of the year in Florida. ⁓ was the biggest event we won. ⁓ And I I didn't play but ⁓ coached and ⁓ was the biggest I played a P Shamus: What was the biggest tournament you played in? Or not even one, just like the biggest tournament like what Elvin: Biggest tournament I played would be I played a PSP, which was pretty much what the major is now, just it changed names, you know what I mean? I I played a PSP and that that was my biggest event that I played, ⁓ personally. Shamus: Alright, is there like a Michael Jordan or anything of pa? Elvin: So there is a there is a there is a debate of who the Jordan is in paintball between couple guys. there's a guy named Oliver Lang, right? That's whoever but ⁓ everybody I think considers him the goat. there's ⁓ guy named Federov, Russian, right? He's pretty good. so it's like, you know, everybody has their goat ⁓ Shamus: Let's hear it. Who you rolling with? Elvin: I don't know. I don't I don't ha I don't have a popular I don't have the p I I would go all over Lang. Oliver Lang? Yeah, I would go Oliver Lang. I got and pretty cool I I got that he actually came to my field and ⁓ did one of his tournaments at my field. ⁓ yeah, it was actually ⁓ Shamus: I was in the presence of greatness, right around the corner, didn't know it. Elvin: Exactly. That's cool. It's pretty cool. Yeah, yeah. That was that was ⁓ something off my bucket list that I wanted to ⁓ do. ⁓ I mean he's older now. He d he didn't really play. He he more brought his tournament and people ⁓ Shamus: That's pretty cool. Were you impressed? I got it's kinda like Tony's Tony Hawk now. Yeah. Every once in a while I'll grab a skateboard, but when he walks into the place everybody's like, ⁓ Elvin: Yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Everybody came. It was it was a good time. It was a good time. Shamus: How long do you own ⁓ the business around the corner? ⁓ Elvin: it I believe th three years. Three years. Yeah, it was it was and before that I I ran with the guy that I met, Hector, when I started playing Woods Ball and I s started playing with his team and his son. I helped him for years. So it was probably about six years I believe before I even jumped and did my own thing. Shamus: I was gonna say altogether, how long from the day you started playing paintball until the last day, like with the ownership and everything, what was the time frame? Just ballpark it. You don't have to Elvin: Since two thousand six, I believe. Wow. Damn. Yeah. And I just stopped last year probably. Herbie: Yeah. Shamus: Yeah, nineteen twenty years. Holy God bless you, brother. Yeah. Do you have any regrets? When it comes to paintball, not just life. We talked about that earlier. Elvin: No Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: Yeah, regrets of paintball. ⁓ Shamus: Or if you could do something differently. Elvin: I pro I definitely will I I can't even say that 'cause I would say ⁓ maybe not owning my own field. But I did so many good things when I owned the field. ⁓ you know I th I don't ha when it comes to paintball I don't think I have a regret. Shamus: Okay. ⁓ Herbie: Yeah. So like the your your ideas that you had when you ran the business, do you does this new business that took over like emulate some of like your your business model or anything like that or how they do it? Elvin: They do their they they have their own way to do things. ⁓ I Shamus: Did you know the people who to ⁓ flipped it over to Elvin: Yeah, yeah, for sure. I I I know him. He's a good guy. when I ran it, I did f because I wanted to keep the community together because the guy that Hector that ⁓ owned the other field, he was getting out of And I wanted to keep the community together. ⁓ and that's kinda why I did it. ⁓ And ⁓ they're doing their own thing. Shamus: I gotcha. Herbie: Okay. Shamus: Now they're doing it. Yeah. Elvin: It's a little different. I I did it to keep keep a community together and I I I pissed a lot of people off because I I came o came in with a lot of new ideas and, you know, other fields didn't like that, but I made them get better. So at the end of the day I I thought I'd I did what I needed to do for paintball. Shamus: Well, Yeah, it changed the game a little bit. Yeah, yeah. That's what's up. Herbie: Well how many how many fields were there then? Like you know, you had your field and Elvin: I have my field around here, then you have one went down. So there was one in six ⁓ next to six flags, right? That one that went away. ⁓ and then you have one in English town. So around here, you got about five around here. That's cool. ⁓ yeah. Speedball wise, right? Every woods ball, there's plenty of woods ball. But speedball, when I started mine, mine was ⁓ not to pat on the back, but I was the best one I think. ⁓ Shamus: Okay. Yeah, he's the reason why I found out Len from the Village Handyman, give him a call, was a gamer. Like I never knew that dude sat at home like with his PS5 and play Call of Duty and shit, because we were talking and he asked me about paintball. Well, me and him had had a conversation about it, me and Elvin. Yeah. And I I mentioned like he sets weren't you doing like Call of Duty setups or something like that at some time on your Was that you? I believe so, yeah. Yeah, they were doing like Call of Duty setups like paintballs. Yeah. Elvin: I believe. No play ball, it was ⁓ airsoft. Shamus: Airsoft. And I was telling somebody at a party and Lynn was just like, what do you mean? She's like, I love Call of Duty. I'm like, you play games, like hey. It's like, where's your money at? Like I'll go down there and check it out. And I was like, holy shit, like I didn't know Len and because Velvin, I found out that Leonard you guys are doing airsoft too. Elvin: We w we did a s I didn't do airsoft at the field here, but I did airsoft when I was helping Hector. Speaking of airsoft, they're doing it tonight. ⁓ right here in ⁓ Shamong, right at Mighty Joe's. They're doing ⁓ night game, which is pretty cool. They quickshot paintball. Shamus: Okay. Well What's the name of the Okay. Is that what it was when you had it? I gotcha. I gotcha. I never understood why law enforcement never used like we went to the airsoft thing when we started doing active shooter stuff down to Seagirt. But I never understood why they didn't use paintballs at one point. I would have loved to have like gone out and just paintballed, you know, just like tactfully, like you know, breaching doors, clearing rooms, stuff like that. Elvin: Mine was quick shot speedball, so it's kinda like Yes. Shamus: Well they do a lot of airsolve stuff now. Yeah. Elvin: Airsoft are more accurate. Yeah. Paint is inconsistent. Guns can be inconsistent. It's like weather. Everything changes. Paintball has so many obstacles to make a perfect Shamus: Yeah, but it's always a good day out, you know? So I just go out with the fellas and how to kill shit. Herbie: 'Cause even Uncle Hell hell yeah. 'Cause even Uncle Len got into it. But like, you know, Gart got into it too. That's actually Gart got a gun and stuff. This was like years ago. And we used to shoot it off the back porch and just like just light stuff up, but he's right. Shamus: Bad guys. I remember that. Even Bobby had one. Herbie: Yeah, since you know that's they got into it so it was just and it was true though, because like sometimes you would actually have a paintball when you're doing rapid fire that maybe one would rupture in the chamber and it's like gummed up and it's just like ⁓ shit. So like your weapon locks up like in the middle of of a of a of a firefight. You don't need that shit. That's cool. Well, yeah, no, I don't want to get hit with Shamus: We used to use rubber bullets. That sucks. Yeah, you ever get hit with This is no kidding. We were doing SRT, which is the military police versions of SWAT. It's a special reactionary team stuff. And we were just training with those guys. Like I wasn't a part of the team or anything. We were always deployed. So we were down there training with them. And like I had I was in a room where I had my elbow like in the door jam. Yeah. Like and my elbow was exposed. So it's my fault. They saw it and that dude hit me like right on the tip of my funny bone. I couldn't feel my hand for three days, dude. Wow. Like it was how dude when you got hit with a rubber bullet, you knew it. Herbie: Yeah, well that's good though 'cause that just gives you like a reminder, like how to like you know, Shamus: Yeah, I've never my elbow's been tucked in ever since. Anytime I do anything tactical, it's it's ⁓ no doubt. Elvin: How to stay alive. Herbie: Yeah. Have anyone like ever had like any weird costumes or like crazy like you know like cosplay type stuff to Elvin: Yeah, yeah. So these big events that they have, so many people get dressed up. Halloween is a big thing. You always see the the banana, right? The that's like the biggest thing, yeah. The banana was everybody dresses up as a banana for some reason. ⁓ Shamus: ⁓ yeah. Have ever dressed up? ⁓ Elvin: I why no, I never dressed up now. I can't even say I have, no. Shamus: Too cool for school, that Herbie: Yeah, sometimes like those c those like those costumes can mess up your line of sight, like your agility, like you're moving around, all that crap. Yeah. Shamus: Yeah. Elvin: ⁓ I mean it's a good time though when you when you just get dressed up to play. Shamus: Yeah. Herbie: What was like some of the other costumes besides the banana? Elvin: Banana is the biggest one. ⁓ a monkey usually, right? A gorilla. I seen a Mario or Luigi. Yeah. ⁓ Shamus: That would be pretty funny, dude, as you're looking across you see like Herbie: Do dir dir. Elvin: But yeah, that's not it's not r that's probably the big the biggest costumes that they they that I see around. ⁓ Herbie: I know like a lot of the ⁓ the masks and stuff like that have definitely changed a lot. So you know, there's used to like goggles and just like the regular almost like a regular hockey mask and now you got like ones that look like skulls. They got like all these other like different uniforms. You got the tactical helmets with the little the binoculars that, you know, come down and everything. Shamus: Now they're all painted like the skull in the front and stuff. You see all what is that, Timu or whatever? Herbie: ⁓ my god, yeah. ⁓ Elvin: They they knock off so much stuff on Timu. ⁓ definitely don't wear Timu stuff if you're gonna play paintball. If you wanna keep your eyes. Yeah. ⁓ Shamus: Well they must have been got b I hope they got better because in ninety six there was a factory, like an old factory they converted into a paintball thing down in Beverly, which was the next town over from Riverside. Well, it was Bever Riverside Delanco and then Beverly. Yeah. And the senior class played their parents. And we went in there, dude. And I don't know, I think it might have been my buddy Sean's mom. actually threw a pi phew and it hit like the middle and there was no it was just like a like an old school hockey mask. Yeah and when it hit my face it just exploded on the inside and I ate most of that paintball. That does still built the same way? This is ninety six so Elvin: ⁓ yeah. way better. They have to 'cause they have to go through a whole bunch of ⁓ tests just to to be able to sell it. But ⁓ sometimes it doesn't matter when a guy's running up right at your face. Especially in speedball, right? Speedball you you get lit up right they could put the gun right to you. And ⁓ and if they if you're looking the wrong way and they catch you, they can catch you Shamus: Yeah. Herbie: Yeah, especially yeah, the neck and all that stuff too. The neck is always like a little vulnerable area too for armor. The neck. Elvin: ⁓ yeah, yeah. And neck I I've gotten shot plenty in the neck. It's not fun. Shamus: ⁓ yeah. Herbie: Yeah, no. It's not fun. Yeah, that's not very very durable area though. Elvin: ⁓ I think I could say Pri and the the neck is probably one of the worst spots to get. Herbie: Yeah, first like the other worst spot you got hit. ⁓ Elvin: You know, the privates is always the w the worst spot you can hit get hit. Pedal. Yeah, yeah. That's not great. ⁓ finger, actually, in the cold. Finger finger's probably you could drop your gun. That'll make you drop your gun and not want to play for a little bit. Shamus: ⁓ yeah, cool. Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: Yeah. That'll make a grown man cry. ACLs I seen ⁓ a broken ankle actually when my buddies as ⁓ funny enough he wasn't playing, he was actually refing for me. ⁓ wow he got caught in a seam and completely broke his ankle. Damn. Yeah, it was bad. That was that was a bad one. Shamus: You can be fast on turf, but you gotta watch them seams, man. Elvin: Yeah, yeah. ⁓ what else? ⁓ shoulder I seen shoulders pop up all the time. ⁓ Shamus: You ever see a tough guy just like put it back in and there you go. I've done it a couple times. Herbie: Yeah. Elvin: Plenty plenty of games I've seen people dive and shoulder come out and you can see that they're they're not moving and you know, they're trying to adjust and they get right back into it. No. You know, you don't wanna be that person that walk off on your team and ⁓ while you're playing. Especially during the tournament. No, yeah. Yeah. Herbie: No, Shamus: This is war, bro. Hell yeah. You got one arm, you can keep shooting. Yeah. That's what they taught us. That's pretty cool, man. Yeah. I'm I'm glad you came in to tell us about this. Herbie: Yeah, 'cause I always thought thought about it stuff too, because a lot of times you see videos of people doing it or you know, you got other like dudes like military dudes are doing breaches and there's other like, you know, people not as experienced like sitting there waiting for like the ⁓ the breach to come in one way and they were coming in through the back and just just walking in, just popping everybody left and right, man. And then sometimes there's some fights. Shamus: Well no, there's so many of There's been brawls. Nice. Elvin: Plenty of fights. I would say that plenty of fights throughout the years. Herbie: That's cool, man. ⁓ Shamus: But ⁓ there's so many places around and like I said we're like right on the tip of the pine and I'm sure there's a bunch of people that'd just go out on the weekends, like unofficially and just do it. So it's a good thing for people to know around here. Yeah like some of the spots and yeah and especially like I said it's a good day out. Elvin: If you have kids that don't they don't have friends and they don't, you know, communicate well and they need something to do, paintball is they'll get ⁓ out of their shell. Paintball will get people out of their shell for sure. That's cool. Nice. ⁓ especially Speedball. Shamus: Do do like a lot of companies actually offer like Kids' Day or something like that or you know like offer like birthday parties and stuff or Elvin: I mean you can set up birthday parties, nobody really offers it but they should. I think that that that's sport. Shamus: Okay. Or like maybe like June twenty eighth is like Kids Day. Bring your kids down, we'll give ⁓ fifty free paintballs and we'll let ⁓ shoot at each other and stuff. They just to generate interest or whatever. Elvin: That's what they should do. I I'm sure people do do do that, but again, like it it definitely got me out of my shell when I you know, I'm very shy as you know, right? Or keep to myself, right? ⁓ paintball definitely got me out of my shell and I was able to, you know, talk to people from different walks of life when it when it comes to paintball, especially feedball. ⁓ and everybody wants to see you do good, even even your competitors, right? But it's definitely good for kids, especially if they're not they want to stay in the house and they don't really have friends. Paintball will help that. Shamus: Yeah. Well that's another thing too. You just gotta I mean, get these kids off the goddamn playstations off their phones and get ⁓ out there running around and having a good time and Herbie: Yeah, until little Johnny gets shot in the air, then he's like Shamus: Kind of like I said with the Leonard thing, it's kind of a gateway thing. So like okay, you're gonna do the Call of Duty thing here or you do it real life with the aerosol stuff here and you know, that kind of thing. So Yeah, that's actually a pretty cool deal. Herbie: It probably can be like an expensive like hobby too, 'cause you know, the you know, the gear and stuff is not exactly, you know, cheap. Elvin: No, you're you're a startup. So everybody If you're if you're trying if you're just doing woods ball, if you if you're just gonna be occasional you know, you can you can do a a mid range gun, right? But then er the problem is when once you get into it, it's kinda one of those things when you get dict addicted to it, you wanna get the highest thing. So if if that's something you wanna start doing and Shamus: Yeah, tell us about startup. So people are interested. What to look for if you're interested. Elvin: the best way is to to go all in right away. You know? Just buy the big 'cause you're gonna buy it anyway, eventually. You know what I mean? Bite the bullet 'cause you're gonna get addicted. That that's this game is addicting for sure. Herbie: How much does that normally range though? ⁓ Shamus: So we're like a beginner's gone. Wow. Elvin: beginner's gun, I mean five hundred, seven hundred, you know, and then then you have a hopper, a tank, so many things that go with it. ⁓ yeah, yeah. There's o there's so many things. ⁓ and then obviously you look good, play good, so you want the best outfit, right? Shamus: Yeah. Okay, so ⁓ before you get into that, what is high end some of the most professional just price wise high end compared to beginners? Elvin: I end it's it's almost like buying a real gun, ⁓ two thousand dollars. Eighteen hundred, you know, depends. ⁓ if you want a specific color, a specific ⁓ like ⁓ milling or something. Shamus: That's the same thing with regular like handguns. They make these skins now for handguns that you could like you could decorate guns now. Like this is ridiculous. ⁓ so just ⁓ like you were getting ready to say, ⁓ regular equipment beginner wise compared to professional wise. Herbie: I know, dude. Elvin: Yeah, it's definitely crazy. So profession I mean professionals obviously get has spons they have sponsors, so you know, everything's cheaper or ⁓ yeah. If you're gonna play ca ⁓ like casual, I will always go with an electric gun, right? No matter what if it's cheap or not, go electrical or go used because you get a expensive gun for cheap. ⁓ that's what everybody uses. ⁓ electrical is ⁓ Shamus: No, I just meant like if you were gonna play What's an electrical gun? Elvin: shoots the fifteen balls a second that you were talking about earlier. Shamus: It's not compressed gas. It's it's actually like a battery operated gun. Elvin: It's battery operate, you still have to have all the paintball guns have gas. B b back in the day you used Shamus: Okay. I gotcha. Electric just operates it. Yes. I gotcha. It triggers it. Elvin: Yes. And then you have ⁓ the woods ball guns, you have speedball guns. Everybody always tends to start with the woods ball guns because they're cheaper. You can get a woods ball gun for like a hundred bucks, right? Yeah. But then you go out there and and you see kids shooting at you with twenty bullets at a time. Yeah. You know what I mean? You're you're hiding there, you know, thinking why you're playing the game. But ⁓ then you eventually tell your parents to go buy a six hundred dollar gun. And then you go from six hundred to Eighteen hundred. Yeah. So it's Shamus: Is it one of those sports where people kinda start and then they lose interest and put it up on Facebook marketplace and you can get a pretty good deal there? Herbie: Sure, that yeah. Elvin: I think that yeah, I think that's what every sport, right? Yeah. You my things are gone. ⁓ but ⁓ yeah, I ⁓ if if you're gonna get into it, I I would at minimum go mid range. ⁓ just because you're gonna eventually you can you can deal with mid range and and still keep up with all the high end stuff. Shamus: Is your stuff on marketplace, dude? Herbie: ⁓ god. Shamus: Okay. Yeah, just do your research and figure out what I I 'cause I guess you need like the chest protector and all that stuff. Elvin: and no I mean I mean it depends. If you're playing whistle ball pr chest Speedball you're not wearing that. Speedball you're just wearing it. Yeah, you you want to play Shamus: No, no. I gotcha. Herbie: Speed and agility is the key in spray and pray. Elvin: No doubt, that's for sure. Spray and pray. Shamus: No doubt. Herbie: But I've played it and ⁓ stuff like that, but I've also like, you know, watched and looked at the ⁓ the the equipment and stuff. So I always like notice certain types of things about the equipment. Yeah. Like it's like if I was gonna do it, this is like maybe what I would do and Elvin: Mm. Shamus: I'm assuming you played a couple times too. Okay. Herbie: you know, what to hear for 'cause you when you hear someone like running around and you hear like those little the paintballs just rcause basically the hoppers it it's it's like a big like pla yeah it's a pl Elvin: Yeah. Shamus: Well know it is because ⁓ d there was one the one time I did play it didn't have a cap on the top, so I had to run in the ship I was like, God damn it. Twenty five cents a piece. Elvin: You won't. Herbie: He's definitely gonna hear all that. Shamus: 'Cause I wasn't used to that 'cause I'm in military things and you know, like clips and stuff. So when you put it in, you don't have to worry about it. Well you're moving to but somebody's like, ⁓ you're dropping all your sh Herbie: ⁓ yeah. And push it here in brass drop so you know you know you're spending your ammo and stuff that. You know what I mean? Some of these owners like Hitting trees and shit. Yeah. Shamus: So what do you got going on this summer, brother? Yeah, no, they're they're taxing you guys, man. Hey, make that money while you can, while you're young. No pay off your houses, pay off your cars, buy all the toys you want, and then Elvin: Work, work and work. Herbie: Yeah. They start getting like the paintball gatling gun, that's when I start getting in there. Elvin: I had one of those. Shamus: You had a Gatlin gun? A paintball can they made those? ⁓ I got it. Elvin: It did not work that well. Bob Shu Shamus: Really? Herbie: Yeah. ⁓ Elvin: It was a big Shamus: Was it the same concept where you had to like kinda crank it? Elvin: You wouldn't crank it. I mean it had the aesthetic that it would crank but it didn't crank, so it was a box in the back that you throw all the paintballs in and it would just not feed correctly into the gun city. You're pretty much shooting confetti. Yes, yeah, yeah. It's more aesthetic. The thing would move but the paintballs are not coming out. Shamus: Because I've seen an old school one, my uncle's friend has one and they took it to a range in Pennsylvania. Like the like the young guns one where like dot dot and I was like, Man, that's increasing. And then being in the army in the Middle East, like I've seen a couple Apache age fifty four is like when they were up and they were like and you just see that rain and you're just like, holy moly So I can definitely see where it would be a problem. Not being able to press Elvin: Yeah, yeah. Herbie: But like the way the pellets are fed, 'cause like the way he was talking about, like maybe the feds the the the pellets are fed from behind. Like you just like you gotta drop it in. So this way you got gravity working for you. Just like a normal, like, you know, paintball gun. Shamus: Yeah, but those things depending on the speed of the the gatling gun, if it's not like if hammer. If it's not catching a hole, each so it might have been better as a hand crank, just ⁓ kind of clack clack clack. I didn't even know they had that. That's crazy. Herbie: Yeah, I Elvin: Slow it down. Yeah, it's not as good, yeah. Well they have tanks. Herbie: Cool, man. Shamus: Is that I've kind of heard about big balloons? Herbie: I've seen some videos. Elvin: I mean no they don't shoot big balloons, they shoot paintballs but that's cool. You know, it's it's more aesthetic than it is actual functional. I mean so yeah, so sometimes yeah, there's like in the scenario games, there's grenades that you can actually toss inside and kind of like make it explode. Or the the hit of a launcher. You know. It's like a sandbag that hits the thing and th that's the explosion in the ref's there to kinda stop it. Shamus: What is the rules on that? How many times do you It was a sticky bomb. Hell yeah. Herbie: Yeah, yeah, that's Elvin: fun to go against actually. No. I've had plenty. Yeah, those are not fun. Shamus: No, I can't imagine. In real life, they're they suck. I've never experienced that, but I was in a mechanized unit and watching, you know, like the Bradleys and the Abrams cruise across the dinner. I was like, man, I would not want to be on the other side of the ice. Herbie: That's yeah, it's like fucking trying to dri like like climb on top of a frickin' thing going sixty five miles an hour. You're not doing it. Shamus: Listen, those things have the A I believe it was the Abrams, have jet engines. And when they fire, you can't be behind it. But when they get to move, man, those things do like sixty five, seventy five miles an hour. And then when they just stop a dead stop, they're like there's times I couldn't hear shit for three days. ⁓ Yeah. So ⁓ Herbie: Yeah, we can't. Shamus: But it was pretty cool. Herbie: He was like going back to like the the tanks and stuff. I remember like down at the shore they had those those tanks you can actually get into. It was like two man, like one would drive and of course the other one would like man the turret, but actually you load it and it would beat tennis balls. And there was actually certain like certain targets like on the side of the of the ⁓ or the turret. And if you hit that, it would disarm it. So like say for example there was like two, two or three targets on the side of the turret. So if it got hit on the side or something like that, it would like you know stall out of it. Yeah, so you couldn't shoot. And even like the tank if you if you shot the one side like it could you know the the tr the steering wouldn't work on that side it was cool yeah and they were huge too dude it was like two man type deals that it was like about almost like the size of a freaking car. And it just had like you know the dude in the in the in the front and then you have the turret up top and you just you know complete rotation and it just had like these fucking like these big you know guns and you have like these big baskets of freaking tennis balls with you. And you just Shamus: That's pretty cool. Yeah. What was that, the game showers on or American Gladiator type stuff. Herbie: Dude and this was ⁓ I love it. I like if anyone is hearing this, like if anyone remembers that, let us know, write us in because that that was it was awesome. It was like this big closed in like area. It was outside at the shore. And even along the side of the perimeter, you can actually rent another like a turf. Shamus: No, I saw that with boats though. I didn't see the tank thing. I saw it with boats. You could shoot boats. Yeah. With the tennis ball things. Herbie: But it's like, you know, people like you rented like people paid the to use the tanks and then you had people outside that can actually pay ⁓ yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cause you manned the tank. There was two two manned teams. Like one guy would drive No dude. But like on the outside of it, there was people that actually could rent Yeah. Really? Yeah. 'Cause it was like old nets and stuff like that. So it like, you know, basically an arena and like maybe like six to eight tanks. Shamus: ⁓ I didn't know you can go inside. Elvin: Just a throw. Shamus: shoot at the people shooting at you? Herbie: And it's all riding around and it was like a limited time. ⁓ and then the perimeter of it was people can actually rent like a bucket of of ⁓ tennis balls too. And they had a cannon. So if they hit your thing, it would actually deactivate They had a tank and there was a target next like at the base of their turret. So if you hit their turret, you knocked out their Yeah, it was freaking awesome, dude. We used to play it all the time we went down the shore. Elvin: Yeah yeah. That's pretty cool. Shamus: Yeah, no doubt. I would too if I know I I knew there were boats, but I didn't know there were boats. Herbie: I'd to have one of those fucking things, man. Cause that thing cooked. I actually moved pretty good. It was like it was like almost like a big I mean it looked like an old Sherman tank back in the day, dude. It was all camo painted and stuff, and had like the big red targets on each side. And then turret like, you know, fully rotational and it had like the frickin' gun. You just and it was like, you know, top fed, you just drop the thing in there, lock it, and brooch. It was cool, bro. Shamus: Nice. So you got nothing going on this summer but just work, huh? How's that dog? Okay. He's got one of them yip dogs, dude. I love that little dude. Like when it barks it like flips over. ⁓ Elvin: That's a good thing. Work. It's great. It's great. Herbie: Yeah. ⁓ Elvin: It's a Yorkie. ⁓ Shamus: Yeah, it's one of them little ⁓ Paris Hilton dogs. Cracks me up. Every time I I I met up with him ⁓ I think it was a year after I retired to ⁓ come up with the fellow's up for Thanksgiving. Yeah. Yeah. And he had the dog as soon as I walked up to the car that thing was like, Elvin: Name's Rocket. ⁓ yeah. Herbie: Hello. Elvin: ⁓ he's tough when you he's tough when I'm in the car. He's tough. Shamus: Yeah. That's that's a cute little ass dude, man. Do you wanna ⁓ give anybody a shout out? Maybe your ⁓ family your dog We always give a shout out to the fellas that we work with and and fuck with, so that's already been done, but if you wanna Elvin: Definitely rock it, yeah. Yeah, no you know, I'll I'll give a shout out to the whoever wants to go play paintball, go to QuickShot Paintball, right? And ⁓ go talk to Joey and Larry. They'll they'll hook you guys up. Shamus: Okay. Herbie: Matter of fact us, you know, next time when off when we're done, just you know, give us the information. Maybe we can like, you know. Shamus: Yeah, if they have a business card or something like that, we'll put it on our our podcast website and all that stuff. Elvin: I said they got gel blasters for kids and they got so all right Shamus: What is a gel bless? Real quick, what is a gel bless? Well Elvin: Yeah, so it's ⁓ it's a another way another version of airsoft and paintball mixed together where it's like little orb ⁓ best orbies, yeah. It's like little Herbie: Yeah, like the orange. Shamus: How the fuck do you know so much? Herbie: I have I have one of those guns too, man. They basically look like really tiny little like like sand crystal beads. Then when you hydrate it, right, you add water to it and they actually become like these water gel beads. Yeah. And then you just like load it into like your regular, like, you know, any type of you know, shooting gun and stuff like that. Yeah, I got I got one. Actually, yeah, it shouldn't be. Elvin: Yeah. Shamus: I'm shocked. Elvin: ⁓ no, sorry. They're perfect for kids. You know what I mean? It's a it's like a startup, right? Yeah. It's a in between airsoft and paintball. It's not it's not messy like paintball. And it shoots as accurate as this as a airsoft probably, but not as far out. Shamus: It's really. Herbie: Yeah, yeah. ⁓ Elvin: Goes away. It's a little gelatin that just dissipates. Herbie: You can actually have a pack. It's like you're buying like a small bag of heroin. Yeah. I swear to god it'd be like you know, hold like a thousand a thousand orbies in it 'cause like once you like dump some out and you put it in water, you let it sit for like an hour. Yeah, basically same thing. Elvin: It's like those old toys that you throw in water. Shamus: Yeah. Okay, what was the name of that place? on two ⁓ six? Two ⁓ six Elvin: Put shotgun ball in Shamung Six. Yep. Right next to Mighty Joe's. All right. Talk to Larry and Joey. Shamus: I'll tell you what, ⁓ like I said, give me a a business card or we'll write down that information and at the ⁓ beginning of the next couple of shows, man, we'll throw them a shout out, we'll get ⁓ some business. Herbie: And of course Herbie's gonna have one of those types of guns, man. Shamus: Yeah, I was just kinda like, how the hell? I'm glad you came on, man. I I learned all kinds of shit about this dude. Herbie: Or Elvin: Yeah. Herbie: Yeah, like yeah, seriously dude sitting in the backyard just like shooting at stuff. There's even like one where I have like a remote control like ⁓ small tank and actually you can load the orbees in ⁓ and y and it rotates the cannon and stuff and you could shoot it. Yeah. I mean like I did it before 'cause like ⁓ you how mama likes to like, you know, feed like the the birds and and the squirrels in the backyard, so of course Elvin: He's all in. ⁓ Shamus: Okay. Herbie: what else goes out there that they're freaking cats. So I'll just roll this little tank out there and the cats are all looking at it and it's just like it just like it just rotates like the little turret and I just light ⁓ up like blap blap. And it just like it just scares them away. 'Cause you know, Mama can't be losing no birds, can't lose no squirrels, and she's you God save the little chipmunk that lives underneath the the stairs. So that's about it. Shamus: ⁓ yeah, it doesn't hurt. Elvin: Yeah. Shamus: Yeah, I told you gu I told you you'd like this dude. So All right. All right, let's get up out of here. All right, everybody.
