- 0:57I'm Del Cooper. Thank you so much for tuning in on this Monday morning,
- 1:00and congratulations you made it through the weekend. Hey, we'll have some
- 1:03opportunity to talk a little bit later on today. Joe Stevens from Nitro is
- 1:07going to join me here in just a moment. He's been hitting for Mayor
- 1:10case Bold, who is out of availability this morning, and sends his regards.
- 1:15But we're gonna talk a little bit about the city of Nitro. What's
- 1:17going on in the city of Nitro. Later on in this half hour,
- 1:19John Burdette, who if you listen to the show just before this on,
- 1:23asked the expert John, when every Monday does retire Right Radio with me?
- 1:26We do that program, But you know what, we've never had him on
- 1:29this program. And John has some really good insights into this debt ceiling battle
- 1:34that's going on, what that means for the economy in general, is their
- 1:38recession coming? And although a lot of folks may hear John's advice in the
- 1:42previous hour, a lot of folks also start tuning in during this hour and
- 1:46may have missed that in the past. And John just has a good,
- 1:49measured response to everything that's going on. And I think that that view is
- 1:53going to be valuable. So I'm going to bring John Burdette in. In
- 1:57the second half of the program. We'll get a little bit of news headlines
- 2:00and the back half of the show on what WCHS News is going to be
- 2:02covering throughout the afternoon today, So we have a lot of good stuff too.
- 2:07I get to today. If you have any questions or you can set
- 2:09the tone for the show, you can you can send us text messages to
- 2:12start with us three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight three zero
- 2:15four nine three five five zero zero eight. I'll open up the phone lines
- 2:17in just a little while, but if you want to get to us this
- 2:21morning, you can do that. Joe Stevens is joining me from the City
- 2:23of Nitro. Joe, good morning. How are you doing this morning?
- 2:24Good morning, Dale. As always a pleasure to be with you. It's
- 2:28a pleasure to talk to you. Man. It's been a while since,
- 2:29so, I don't even know when we were last in studio together. It's
- 2:30probably been like five or six years. Maybe. I think the dinosaurs were
- 2:36walking down Virginia Street there, So it has been a while. Yeah,
- 2:38I think it's been a while. We've talked on the phone all the time,
- 2:40but it's been a while since we've been in studio together. What is
- 2:43your official title with the City of Nitro, Executive Director of the Convention and
- 2:47Visitors there. I was going to call you chief of staff. I didn't
- 2:50think that was right. So that's a way above my payron. So so
- 2:53that sounds good. And there's a lot to talk about with what's going on
- 2:55in Nitro. Things that we need to to get out there top of mind.
- 3:00As far as the first thing you want to tell the folks about what,
- 3:02I'll let you pick. What do you think the top of mine thing
- 3:05you want to share? Well, right now as we talk, there are
- 3:07about four hundred motorcyclists headed east from California. I've been follow them on Facebook.
- 3:13Yeah, for the annual Run for the Wall ride to Washington, d
- 3:19C. And on an annual basis, they stop in West Virginia. Their
- 3:23first stop this year will be in Hurricane at Valley Park. That'll be happening
- 3:28fives or so on Wednesday, Amanda with the Hurricane CVB in the city of
- 3:34Hurricane. They've got Valley Park ready for them and it's going to be a
- 3:37great celebration out in Hurricane on Wednesday. One of the things that will be
- 3:43on display at Valley Park during the Run for the Wall stop there is the
- 3:47West Virginia Vietnam War Memorial. It's a traveling monument that goes to different events
- 3:57and this week again it is in Hurricane for the stop for the Run for
- 4:01the Wall. On Thursday morning around eight thirty, that monument, that war
- 4:09memorial will be packed up and escorted by a group of the motorcyclists, about
- 4:15twenty five of them, to Taylor, who we're still trying to get you
- 4:17in contact with from out on the course there. Todd Taylor is the West
- 4:23Virginia Platoon leader. He and about twenty five other motorcyclists and Hurricane Police and
- 4:30Nitro police will be escorting the war memorial to the city of Nitro for its
- 4:34permanent home. That's crazy, that's great. It will no longer be a
- 4:39traving memorial. You can stop by the Nitro Wars Museum on twentieth Street,
- 4:46right next to city Hall, right next to the fire department and everything and
- 4:49see the war memorial. It is now going to find a, like I
- 4:54said, a permanent home in the museum in the Nitro History side. We
- 4:59have two sides, the Wars Museum, one dedicated to all the wars that
- 5:04all the conflicts that the US has been involved in, and that is on
- 5:09the one side. On the other side is the Nitro History which has got
- 5:14a tremendous amount of history. Dale. You and I couldn't. We could
- 5:16spend more than an hour talking about the history of Nitro and everything. But
- 5:21it'll be in a dedicated spot where people can come in. It's got all
- 5:28the names, unfortunately of the folks who were victims of the Vietnam conflict and
- 5:35the Vietnam War and they did not survive and come home to their loved ones.
- 5:42So we'll have a place for that war memorial in the Wars Museum leaving.
- 5:46You know, if everything goes right, Lord willing the creek don't rise,
- 5:50though, it'll be leaving a hurricane around eight thirty on Wednesday and arriving
- 5:57at the Wars Museum on twentieth Street about nine o'clock. It is the final
- 6:01day of school, and working with the principle at Nitro Elementary School, Ashley
- 6:08Garrett and her staff, we will have all the elementary school kids out with
- 6:12American flags. They've got about three hundred and fifty students. They will be
- 6:15lined up on Second Avenue and twentieth Street and they will be greeting the platoon
- 6:21leaders as they come in and the war memorial have a little ceremony, a
- 6:27very minor ceremony, but a very effective and respectful ceremony. As that war
- 6:31memorial arrives in Nitro. Later on in June, we will have a more
- 6:39formal ceremony inside the museum dedicating the war memorial's final home place, and that
- 6:45is in Nitro, West Virginia. And so this is the memorial that's going
- 6:47to be that's going to be in Nitro resident A Nitro for now. And
- 6:50this is the one that's been traveling all this time, and so it's going
- 6:54to have its permanent home now in Nitro, which is great. That's how
- 6:57how many years has this traveling memorial being going to DC? How long has
- 7:00it been making that trip. Dave Simmons is in charge of that with the
- 7:03American Legion and the Veterans of Vietnam War and everything. I would have to
- 7:09refer to him exactly that it's been. We've covered it here for a long
- 7:12time and number of years. They've done a great job in keeping it together
- 7:17and making sure that the the the Vietnam veterans that did not make it back
- 7:24home were honored in a way that was very respectful and very honored. Man.
- 7:28That's something else, and we'll have some more information on this of course.
- 7:30This is when we Thursday is when this the little ceremony um and the
- 7:34wall is going to come over. So we'll do a little piece on that.
- 7:36I think Danny Jones will be in here with me on Thursday, so
- 7:39he'll be a good person to having here to kind of talk about this stuff
- 7:41with just a little bit and uh and uh and to uh let folks know
- 7:45what's going on. I think that's great. I think it's great. It's
- 7:46going over to the museum. I think that it's uh. I think it's
- 7:48uh. I just think it's cool. I think it's a cool thing to
- 7:51have here. It's the right thing to do. Yeah, I mean it's,
- 7:54you know, one of those right things to do. With that said,
- 7:57um, the actual run for the Wall will be leaving Valley Park around
- 8:01ten o'clock is the plan. They will be escorted down sixty four going to
- 8:07Renelle. That's an annual stop form two. And then after they stay the
- 8:11night in Renelle, Rainelle just I mean, they step up and they they
- 8:16knocket out of the park for those guys, as does Hurricane and every other
- 8:20year Hurricane and Nitro. We switch back and forth in celebrating their ride through
- 8:26and hosting them and that sort of thing. But after Renelle, then they're
- 8:30headed to the nation's capital. It's a heck of a ceremony in the Nations
- 8:33Capital two at the Vietnam War Memorial. That's great stuff. Joe Stevens with
- 8:39the City of Nitro with us this morning. I will share on social media
- 8:41linked to the Facebook page for the run for the Wall and also the information
- 8:45over in Nitro. You can do that at five a WCHS one both Facebook
- 8:48and Twitter. I'll get that information out before the end of the show today.
- 8:52A lot of a lot of good stuff happening in Nitro, though not
- 8:54just the wall that's coming through talent. You have the sports complex that's opening
- 8:56up as well coming up that is also along the lines of sports. I
- 9:01want to say congratulations to the running and throwing Wildcats who competed in the state
- 9:07track and field championships at Lately Field this past week. In fact, congratulations
- 9:13to all the student athletes from all over the state that competed here in the
- 9:18Canal Metro Valley area. We had a number of student athletes who won state
- 9:24titles and are all state. We had a couple schools when state titles.
- 9:28As people learned from Chris Lawrence this morning on the news, the Winfield girls
- 9:35won the girls the Double A championship and the Buffalo Boys first time ever won
- 9:41the single Way Boys championship and just to see the reaction and everything at them
- 9:50with them, I help out with the Nitro track and field team, and
- 9:54just to see the reaction. It was really a good feeling knowing if we
- 10:00can keep these kids in West Virginia, what our future is going to be.
- 10:03That's that's a great point because it was a great weekend track and field.
- 10:07I was never very I was never very good at any sport. I
- 10:09played football for most of my Jinger High in high school career, though I
- 10:11was never very good at track and field. But I always went and hung
- 10:13out at the events because unlike football or basketball or something like that, which
- 10:18is like you know, two hours and you're gone, and it's and it's
- 10:20kind of a manic pace and you know, the very tim centric when you
- 10:24go to the track and field of him and it's kind of all day.
- 10:26You can check out the different events, the different heats and stuff like that.
- 10:28It's kind of a good time. It's also a brotherhood and sisterhood.
- 10:31Yeah, they are very close. I worked the finish line for the live
- 10:35streaming of the event. Mark Martin with WCHS TV he was doing the play
- 10:41by play, and as we were talking back and forth, what you see
- 10:45in track and field you don't see in a lot of other sports. Some
- 10:48you do. But now, I said, Mark, when's the last time
- 10:52you saw a dB just get burned on a football and go up and congratulate
- 10:58hug receiver or whatever and say, a great job you just did, smoking
- 11:01me. You know that sort of thing. But it's not you know,
- 11:05yes, I'm running against you to the right of me, to the left
- 11:09of me, or in to the front room behind me, but I'm running.
- 11:11We're both running against the clock, and when we get to the finish
- 11:15line, the clock stops and our friendship continues. And some of these people
- 11:18have probably have been friends and rivals for years at this point. They run
- 11:22against each other all the time, all the time, and it doesn't matter
- 11:24if you're from Wheeling, if you're from Huntington, if you're from Jefferson,
- 11:30or if you're from Nitro High School. You know these kids. They're your
- 11:33friends, they're your compadres, and you wish the best form. It's it's
- 11:37really cool stuff. Yeah, I agree that the track and film meets are
- 11:39always are always a good time. So as far as the sports complex,
- 11:43it's opening up. What's going on there, I know that there's a man
- 11:45I can't believe everything that's happening. Well, congratulations the Prey construction. I'm
- 11:50going to say that right now, they have really done a great job and
- 11:54making sure that everything was on time and right now the plan is is to
- 12:00be opening the athletic complex. The pool side of the newest pool in the
- 12:05region will be opening this Saturday at eleven o'clock. It's located right there at
- 12:11the corner of Park Avenue and right there at Park Avenue in nineteenth Street.
- 12:18Everything is just about going to be ready, at least from the pool side
- 12:22of things. We had a little delay on the slide, so I know,
- 12:24Dale, you and I are not the biggest backstrokers in the world,
- 12:28but we do love the slides. Got a little delay in the supply issues
- 12:33scenario and that will be coming on later next month. But we'll be having
- 12:39a ribbon cutting ceremony pretty much on Friday. But for the pool itself,
- 12:43it'll be opening at Saturday at eleven o'clock. You know, our city planner,
- 12:48Kim Reid and Jamie Wright with the other Department of the City Department here
- 12:54in Nitro. Then we've got a new Parks and rec director, Matthew Lawrence.
- 13:01They're all ready to go and things are going to be really happening.
- 13:05But the really cool thing about it is the city council. One of the
- 13:09city Councilmen at Large, Bill Javans, is known for providing hot dogs during
- 13:15our Halloween hodown. I mean he just throws out the grill and we have
- 13:18free hot dogs and stuff like that. Well, this Saturday, beginning at
- 13:22noon, he is the chef of one thousand free cheeseburgers. So I don't
- 13:28know if we'll have Jimmy out there singing Cheeseburger in Paradise, but it will
- 13:33be definitely Cheeseburger in Nitro on Saturday, beginning at noon. His sux chef
- 13:37is former Councilman John Montgomery. They'll be stepping up. We'll have kids volunteering
- 13:43from the Nitro High School serving and everything. So stop going by. It's
- 13:48going to be a busy time. I mean, opening day for a new
- 13:52athletic complex is always We're expecting a pretty big crowd. The pickleball courts and
- 14:00the tennis courts are ahead of schedule for opening. They will be opening sometime
- 14:05next month in June. We'll have our first major tournament in the middle of
- 14:09July. It's the Canal Metro nine one one First Responders Tournament that John Rutherford
- 14:16and his staff are putting together. A great pickleball tournament, one of the
- 14:20first tournaments in the area, one of the biggest first tournaments in the area.
- 14:24But that'll be happening in July. Now, later on, as we
- 14:30go through Saturday, we'll be closing Park Avenue down in front of City Park
- 14:35and not too far from the high school, and we'll be putting a stage
- 14:39out there and the Esquires will be playing on opening night on Saturday, starting
- 14:45at about seven o'clock and they'll be playing through to nine o'clock. Then at
- 14:48nine thirty we're going to turn the lights off and have a fireworks display right
- 14:54there at City Park. So a lot of things being planned for this Saturday
- 14:56in Nitro as we continue to grow and UH try to provide the best weekend
- 15:01for the citizens in the area. You know, Charles is great and Mary
- 15:05and he's been doing a great job over here. But I have to say
- 15:07that and now that Charleston's is a huge city, but small city USA,
- 15:11and all the things that goes on in towns like Nitro and the community building
- 15:16aspect of it, and and uh and you know, the community, the
- 15:20patriotic that all the aspects that kind of roll into one, especially in small
- 15:22towns across the country, especially here in West Virginia. I just love that
- 15:26stuff. Man. Oh well, Chris had Mayor Summers from clindenon on this
- 15:30morning. Oh yeah, right on the newscast. They're doing some great stuff
- 15:33with the absolutely and you know, I look at Steve Bishop's Facebook and all
- 15:39he does is ride his bike up and through Clindenton and everything, and uh,
- 15:45it's it's really cool, and it's really neat what Mayor Mary Godwin is
- 15:48doing here in in in Charleston, what Frank Mullins is doing in South Charleston,
- 15:54all the way through the Canal Metro Valley area. You're seeing good things
- 15:58happen. Yeah, that's absolutely true. I love these these small community events
- 16:03that take place. And it's and the newness factor of it too. I
- 16:07mean, you have a new sports I mean that those are good things,
- 16:08those are economically good things that are happening. Um, and there's probably I
- 16:12mean, they just opened the one up in Shawnee, obviously, but now
- 16:15you have the one in Nitro, we have the one in Charleston is going
- 16:18to be built. We have the the developmental the business development, the developmental
- 16:22place over in South Charleston where chick Filate just launched. Like I mean,
- 16:25there's a lot of stuff going on in the valley. And speaking of that,
- 16:27we've had a very progressive and assertive demolition of dilapidative building program not only
- 16:36in Nitro, bute in Saint Albans also and there is a lot of really
- 16:41good space out there that the Mayor case Bold and city planner Read are both
- 16:45hearing from businesses that hey, we see the space, we are interested.
- 16:51Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro, penchionting from here case Bolt this morning
- 16:55talking about what's going on in the City of Nitro, and that's all kinds
- 16:57of stuff. There's the sports Clex that are that's opening up with a ribbon
- 17:02cutting that's on Saturday, Saturday and Saturday, well, no, the ribbon
- 17:03cutting is Friday, Friday. Rum it's so late and late in the morning
- 17:08sort of thing. Um. But the Grand opening for starts swimming and having
- 17:14fun in the pool will be on Saturday at eleven o'clock. And the Vietnam
- 17:18War Memorial, the Traveling Vietnam War Memorial, will be coming through to its
- 17:22permanent home in the Nitro Wars Museum, and that's going to be on Thursday
- 17:26morning. Just all kinds of great stuff that's happening in the city of Nitro.
- 17:29And before I cut your loose slow joke, because we've heard about all
- 17:30these things that you're a huge baseball fan, I think the first thing that
- 17:33you and I ever talked about as we got to know each other is baseball
- 17:37in some way, shape or form. Your son wrote a lot of sports
- 17:41articles and covered baseball Christian over over a lot of time. But something I
- 17:45haven't had a chance to talk to you about being an old fan, what
- 17:48do you think of the new rules in baseball? I like them? Yeah,
- 17:51um, you know when when the Orioles, I'm a huge I mean
- 17:55I used to walk to Memorial Stadium and they talk about Frank Robinson hitting the
- 17:59only ball out of Memorial Stadium. I wish I had the ticket, Stubb,
- 18:03but I was there with my little league, Skip Johnson, was his
- 18:06name. My little league manager played for the Orioles and we were we were
- 18:11there and he hit it against Louis Tiatt and I still see the ball going
- 18:14over left field fence. But the new rules the time clock, bring it
- 18:18on, bring it, bring it on, and the throws over the first
- 18:23base, Yeah, you can't do it to make sure the guy out in
- 18:26the bullpens getting a couple of guard tosses in before you come in. I'm
- 18:32starting to warm up to the Manford rule of second base extra and if they
- 18:38got rid of any of them, that would be the one I would be
- 18:40fine with, you know. But whatever, And I believe it or not,
- 18:45never have been a fan of the designated hit a rule unless it's an
- 18:48Oriole who's hitting a three run home run to win it in the ninth or
- 18:52something like that. Now, um, you know Kevin Cosner or in bull
- 18:56Durham had that famous line and do with the designated hitter rule. You know,
- 19:02it's it's part of baseball. It's in the National League now. It's
- 19:06giving some players a longer career that they can hang around and and that sort
- 19:10of thing. Back to the rules, you know, it's I really haven't
- 19:14seen anything that has been detrimental to the game. The worst thing I've heard
- 19:18is save percentages are down a little bit. But you know what, I
- 19:22don't even know if that's a bad thing. I mean, honestly, um,
- 19:25the way that this this thing was going where pitching was so I mean,
- 19:27it was either a home run or a strikeout. I mean, things
- 19:30were just getting a little bit too much. And now you're seeing there there's
- 19:33there is. I think the trend is there to be a thousand more stolen
- 19:37bases this season than what there was last season, a thousand more. I
- 19:41love the speed. I love I hate the shift. Yeah, I'm sorry,
- 19:45I just I know you can't tell Bill Belichick you can't blitz. I
- 19:48understand, I understand, I get that. But you're seeing more action.
- 19:55I saw a romantic right up from a left hand from a left handed hitter
- 19:57perspective. They talking about with a runner on first base. Now suddenly for
- 20:02years that hole that traditionally throughout centuries of baseball, when you have a runner
- 20:07on first base, there is that nice little pocket between first and second base
- 20:11because you have to cover the runner at first and you got a shade second
- 20:14for the for the double play. You always have to do that well.
- 20:15With the shift, you just put another guy in the hole and that left
- 20:18handed batter no longer has that hole to try to get the ball through.
- 20:22Now it's bike. Now it's bike. I think that the left handed heading
- 20:26for left handed batters with runners on first base is up something like five hundred
- 20:30percent. It's up like five basis points. It's gone way up this year
- 20:36because that that traditional hole that that everybody learned to hit through is back now,
- 20:40and a base it up the middle is now a base it up the
- 20:42middle and not a ground out to. I mean you hit it like a
- 20:45laser baseman who's playing behind. That made me so you hit a laser that
- 20:49gets past the picture and it goes over second base. For one hundred and
- 20:52fifty years, that was a base hit for one hundred and fifty years.
- 20:56That was a base hit. The last five years. Now it's just there's
- 20:57a guy playing behind second base. First shift like that. I mean,
- 21:02they talked about the shift only being in the last few years or what have
- 21:04you? Really the first shift. I can remember when boog Pal first came
- 21:07up and Frank Howard, they would put a third, they would put them
- 21:11behind second base. And that's there was a shift. First time I really
- 21:15ever saw it in the way that it was stopped this year was opening game
- 21:22against It was Tampa Bay and Baltimore and Nick Markekas was the leadoff hitter for
- 21:29Baltimore. And I can't think of his name. It was Tampa Bay's coach
- 21:33then he coached the Cubs. Madden put, you know, the shift on
- 21:37him. Markecas was left handed, and all he did was slap it out
- 21:41in the left field for a double. And there was no more shift by
- 21:45Madden. And and that's all they you know, I said, learn to
- 21:48hit to the opposite field. If you tried to shift, ye, cops
- 21:51or Ted Williams, they would have never got out. Yeah, they would
- 21:53have beat five her for their career. Or Joe the manager, just go
- 21:56on down the line. I mean, that's like, hey, you talking
- 22:00about Christian. He had an opportunity the other day that hashtag jealous. What
- 22:04did he do? What Christian? Christian? Your son? He got to
- 22:07visit the Nigro Baseball Hall of Fame in Kansas. Is nice. Nice,
- 22:12and and that is that's on the bucket list. Yeah, that's on mine
- 22:15too. I always got to go. I've got to Baltimore Elite Giants Jersey.

- 26:48it's John Burdett from Fourth Avenue Financial. Don't adjust your radios. I
- 26:51wish I had the Twilight the Twilight Zone theme thing. John is usually on
- 26:55in the first eight yeah right. John is usually on in the in the
- 26:57eight o'clock hour with me on Monday's for retire Right Radio. But I thought
- 27:00I would hold John over and thank you for saying over. By the way,
- 27:03I appreciate that. Get to Mike just a little bit closer to you.
- 27:06Sorry about that. Okay, there we go. Yeah, that's perfect.
- 27:07Thank you. I appreciate you spending some time with this um. One
- 27:11of the things I wanted to do John is the under fourth Avenue financially.
- 27:15He's been doing a show with this for a long time retire Right Radio,
- 27:18which is a part of our Asked the Expert imprint. But John's perspective from
- 27:22from the market and from investing in the future is I find it to be.
- 27:26He's part of the Ramsey the Ramsey Theory concept program. However, you
- 27:32want to talk meeting Dave Ramsey as far as a financial responsibility and things go.
- 27:36And one of the things that you've always taught and that you've instructed when
- 27:41doing your show, because we're in kind of crazy times right now, and
- 27:44we've been in crazy times for a long time because of COVID, but then
- 27:45the war in Ukraine happened, and so those two circles kind of went over
- 27:51top of each other the potential recession coming out of COVID, slash Ukraine,
- 27:57slash checking prices and lumber prices, said everything else. You know, we
- 28:00had that that was kind of sitting there, and now we have the debt
- 28:03selling talk that's going on, and so general feeling of people is a little
- 28:07depressed. Oh you paint such a picture there, I'm going to go back
- 28:10to bed. Well, the good news is I paid. I paid just
- 28:15over three dollars for eighteen eggs this weekend, so I think they we're getting
- 28:18a little better in the egg department now anyway, So there's at least that
- 28:21going on. But you know what I mean when and we talk about this
- 28:23when when your show quite a bit, people tend to I mean not everybody's
- 28:27experts in financial situations obviously, and not everybody's expert in political situations. And
- 28:33what happens is is you take your non expert opinions and financial things you get,
- 28:37you are kind of told your political opinions from the news and stuff that
- 28:41you follow, and you marry those two things together and people get fidgetty and
- 28:45panicky. Right. Well, the good thing is that I believe that that
- 28:51really the one piece of thing to focus on, is you. Hey,
- 28:55you know, if you can control what you do, you're going to vastly
- 29:02influence the outcome any more than all of these external factors. So um,
- 29:07you know, if you're if you're trying to save for a retirement or or
- 29:11find your way out of debt, then the decisions you have to make are
- 29:15centered around you and the things that you can can control. You know,
- 29:19we don't control the debt ceiling, we don't control Ukraine or any of those
- 29:25things. But if you go out and serve people and earn money and live
- 29:32below your means, if you start accumulating savings and capital to invest, and
- 29:40you do that consistently, and you repeat that process over and over and over,
- 29:45and do that with a discipline, you know, how do you get
- 29:48ten, twenty thirty years down the road and not end up better off regardless
- 29:52of what's happening in the news today. That's almost an impossibility. And so
- 29:57I think that that while all of these things are interesting that are going on,
- 30:02and certainly some things sound concerning and our concerning, you still have to
- 30:07live your life. You know, no matter who is elected, you have
- 30:11to retire, and you're going to desire to do things in that retirement.
- 30:17So you can't use these things as reasons not to pursue the individual goals that
- 30:22you have. You have to do them regardless. That's such great advice because
- 30:26I think that what we tend to forget sometimes when we get kind of involved
- 30:30with political headlines and things like, it's a big world. It's a huge
- 30:33world. There's a lot of interlocking, interlocking factions within that world. But
- 30:40as far as our personal lives go, we can function within planning for our
- 30:44retirement, function within our life and things like that without letting as far as
- 30:48those particular things go, we can function within whatever the world throws at us
- 30:52with the help of an expert like yourself. But I mean, those are
- 30:55things that you can function within. You can plan, for example, with
- 30:59all the things that are going on right now. If we look at previous
- 31:03to COVID hitting, it was pretty easy times for somebody that was in the
- 31:07market. The market was basically just up and up and up. We've talked
- 31:08about one year show before. If you were somebody that was playing around in
- 31:11the market, you might have thought yourself a genius. Everybody everybody was making
- 31:15money. You know, It's like, oh, man, I can't lose.
- 31:17Everything I do is making money. Things are a little bit more difficult
- 31:19now. So if you're out there doing it on your own, it might
- 31:22seem like that. But someone who's educated, somebody that knows how this goes,
- 31:26knows that over the long arc of history, over the long arc of
- 31:29the market and the economy, things tend to work themselves out. And you
- 31:32can position yourselves to know that in fifteen, twenty thirty years, whatever that
- 31:36might be, that you're going to be able to play out on the right
- 31:37side of that. Absolutely. And when you look at long term averages,
- 31:41oh, the market average is this. It includes the good years and the
- 31:45bad years, you know, and it'd be wonderful if we do which years
- 31:51we're going to be the bad years. But but nobody knows that. No
- 31:53one has a crystal ball. We don't We don't know what tomorrow brings.
- 31:59That's that's, you know, what makes the world scary but also interesting.
- 32:05One of the more compelling UM kind of UH paths that you that you often
- 32:09go down is and we've talked about things like NFTs and and UH and UH
- 32:15the decentralized currency and different things along those lines. But your basic premise when
- 32:19you look at at worthwhile investments and things along those lines. As you said
- 32:23earlier, if it's a company or a service that's servicing people, that's creating
- 32:28something that's useful, that's making uh, that's making itself something that's kind of
- 32:31life dependent, you know that there's a value that's going to be returned when
- 32:35somebody on a company or an institution that's making something for people, which is
- 32:38a lot different than some of these other hedge beets that people make well,
- 32:42and you can and you can break that down there again to the individual and
- 32:45what what you do or I do, or anybody listening does day to day
- 32:49in their own life. You know, what are you doing when you go
- 32:52out to work, You're providing a service or a good or something to somebody
- 32:57that they believe as a value to them or they wouldn't be consuming that good
- 33:00or service that you're providing. And when you go out and spend your money,
- 33:07what are you doing. You're claiming other people's services. And so when
- 33:10you own ownership and companies, how do you profit from that? Well,
- 33:15those companies are an extension of you through that ownership, and what are they
- 33:20doing. They're trying to satisfy needs, make life easier for people, make
- 33:23things more efficient. They're innovating and over time, and we can see this
- 33:30in our quality of lives. I mean, look at the things. You
- 33:31know, I'm forty nine years old, about the same age as you are.
- 33:36I mean, look at all the things that we have and enjoy today
- 33:38that didn't even exist twenty thirty years ago and more. You know, we
- 33:44are able to do things more efficiently than we could have imagined. And by
- 33:50being able to save and invest, you're able to participate in the ownership of
- 33:54that, and that becomes an extension of you. And in fact, when
- 33:59you retire, that's really what you're doing. You're no longer out there using
- 34:02your own skills to serve, but you're using the capital, you're savings that
- 34:07you had through the ownership of the companies you're still serving and that's still what's
- 34:12creating the income that you're living off of, so you can claim other people's
- 34:15service. And that's really what you're doing. And regardless of what happens in
- 34:22Washington or any of those things, that's going to be true. Regardless of
- 34:28whether the dollar goes away. You know, I hope the dollar doesn't go
- 34:30away. There's value of having the reserve currency, certainly the United States,
- 34:36and by the way, I don't think there's any chance that happens in any
- 34:38of our lifetimes. But even if it did, you know, imagine that
- 34:45you're a heart surgeon and I need a heart surgeon. That's going to be
- 34:50valuable to me, regardless if whether we change trade that with a dollar or
- 34:53a bitcoin or a hunk of gold. The service, the skill is what
- 35:00the value is. All those other things are just how we how we transfer
- 35:05it. This perspective that that that you are able to gather and to relate
- 35:10is something that's been of our all of our talks and things we do,
- 35:14has really made an impact on me because it really dows everything in to make
- 35:17sense, and that even long term, when you look at companies that have
- 35:21been successful in companies that haven't ones that produce year after year, ones that
- 35:24you can kind of count on, it's always those that are servicing people in
- 35:28someone and services could be a number of things. Maybe it's providing great entertainment
- 35:31year after year, whatever it is, they're producing something that people seek out
- 35:36and they want, which is a lot different than what some of these things
- 35:38are and having that kind of a sober mind as you're approaching retirement investments and
- 35:43different things like that, you can kind of see. And the other thing
- 35:45we talk about, regardless of what political faction is in is in power.
- 35:50The people in charge of these companies are made to make are paid to make
- 35:52money. They're going to find a way. Absolutely if if the management of
- 35:57a company is focusing on meeting the needs of the customers that they serve,
- 36:00you know, yes, there might be bad policy for government that comes around.
- 36:06There may be things that we don't like that happen in the world.
- 36:08But still they're waking up thinking, okay, this has happened. You know.
- 36:13They don't just throw their hands up and say we're done. You know,
- 36:16they innovate. I mean you could see that with COVID. Look at
- 36:19all the changes that happened during COVID when the world basically shut down. Yet
- 36:24businesses were able to continue by using technologies such as zoom and things of that
- 36:30nature that nobody was really relying on daily like they like they did during COVID.
- 36:37They innovated, They improvised, and they still went to work every day
- 36:40to try to make that happen. And that's why the market is so resilient.
- 36:45That's why humanity is so resilient. You know, we all wake up,
- 36:49billions of us on this planet wake up every day trying to and we're
- 36:52thinking to ourselves, how can I improve my lot in life? How can
- 36:55I make it easier for myself? How can I make it easier for my
- 36:59fee Emily and the people I care about? And if everybody's working towards that,
- 37:05even though they're all individualized goals, collectively progress happens. I just like
- 37:10John sober opinion on these things and takes a temperature down just a little bit
- 37:15when we're talking about some of the stuff that's going on in the world ways
- 37:17as it relates to your finances and your retirement. By the way, Fourth

- 41:42Carry Hood sec from Measure News and wchs Now joins me in the news Roo.
- 41:45I'm gonna talk a little bit about the stories from the weekend and what
- 41:47we're gonna be covering this week. But Carrie, how are you doing?
- 41:50I'm good, Dale, how are you? I'm doing? Okay, Yeah,
- 41:52it's Monday. I'm I'm I'm kind of on an up trend because I'm
- 41:55gonna be doing this for Dave of all weeks. So it kind of puts
- 41:58me in a different mind space because I have to hit the I have to
- 42:00hit the ground running every single morning, right, So I kind of like
- 42:01that. Don't get me wrong, but but you know, I have to
- 42:05have to be up in peppie and ready to go. It reminds me of
- 42:07my morning so well, so much earlier. Yeah, yeah, I don't.
- 42:12I get up early for a normal human. I'm usually up at five
- 42:15thirty or six. Even on the weekends. You're up ridiculously early all the
- 42:19time. I'm not a normal human either, is Chris Lawrence. You guys
- 42:22crank out the morning news, getting here what between three and four o'clock in
- 42:25very morning, right, Yeah, so that's where the sausages made. As
- 42:30far as the morning news goes, and they do the extra favor. Morning
- 42:32news starts at six and carry and Chris do the extra favor of kind of
- 42:36starting the morning news at five and giving us local newscast from five to six
- 42:38two. So we got your well covered there and that's why I like doing
- 42:42this a little bit to kick off the week. As far as some of
- 42:45the stories that we're looking out over this past weekend coming through on Monday,
- 42:50any big updates on stories from the weekend, Yeah, so, um,
- 42:52one story we found when I came in this morning was that there was a
- 42:55body discovered in Boone County that was in the Spruce Laurel Fork area and that
- 43:00happened Sunday afternoon. I was actually here yesterday Sunday, but this happened after
- 43:06I had already left, so we got that update. We don't have a
- 43:07person's identity, but deputies say that they believe it could be that of a
- 43:13missing person that happened a few weeks ago, so we'll continue to follow that
- 43:16story there. And then we had a fatal shooting in rand over the weekend
- 43:21too that happened Saturday night. Apparently two men were fighting, someone shot the
- 43:27other one. The man died at the scene, and then a second man
- 43:30was detained by police. Again. That happened Saturday night. A couple other
- 43:35things were following coming up. Oh, we're looking at the one year anniversary
- 43:40of the downtown Charleston Library branch. Oh has that been a year? Yeah,
- 43:45So we're going to talk to the director there tomorrow morning. I actually
- 43:50just set up an interview with her. So well, it's kind of be
- 43:52interesting to see, you know, what progress they've seen. They've had so
- 43:54many additions and just you know, it's great. I haven't been able to
- 43:59check it out yet. I was going to ask if you've been there yet.
- 44:00My daughter absolutely loves that place. Yeah, I mean she just the
- 44:06upper Yeah, the upper section that's dedicated to kids. They have like a
- 44:09little player room up there, and all the kids stuff is in one area.
- 44:12She absolutely loves it. I haven't been able to check out, like
- 44:15the tool I think there's a place where you can read tools and things like
- 44:16that. It'll be interesting getting the update though, because that place looks nice.
- 44:20Oh yeah, absolutely. I want to grab a coffee there too,
- 44:22because I keep seeing people being like, Hey, I'm gonna go hang out
- 44:24of the library and grab a coffee. I'm like, that sounds so relaxing.
- 44:27I usually take a little walk around Charleston in the afternoons before the afternoon
- 44:31show on the hotline with the Weekly, and you'll often will see people just
- 44:35out there relaxing, and it's nice. It's nice to see that out of
- 44:37the library and nice to see the library being robust downtown Charleston. That's for
- 44:39sure one story I did over the weekend too. It's our lead story at
- 44:43wv metronews dot com. This isn't a local story, but I think it
- 44:45still applies and has statewide appeal. So Um an ROTC graduate. He was
- 44:51in the army. He went to West Virginia University, just graduated. He
- 44:55was due to be commissioned earlier this month and mail even I believe was the
- 45:00ceremony date there in Morgantown, and found out from his two sisters that his
- 45:05mother, he's originally from Maryland, her breast cancer took a turn for the
- 45:09worst and basically she was on her last days. And so he told his
- 45:15professor's there he said, hey, listen, I can't be commissioned, and
- 45:17that's a very important honor obviously, and he wants to be there. And
- 45:21there was eighteen of their classmates he was going to be joining, and he
- 45:23said, I got to go back to Maryland. I have to be with
- 45:25my mother. I don't know how long she's going to live for. So
- 45:29got in the car, went back to Maryland and his professor said, you
- 45:32know what, we're going to come to you and yeah, and so they
- 45:36traveled there and they commissioned him at his mother's bedside there at a Maryland hospital,
- 45:43and then two days later she died. Yeah, so we have photos
- 45:46of that that interaction. He was seen leaning over kissing his mother, but
- 45:52he said he was so he couldn't go through one of the most important days
- 45:57of his life, of his life without his mother there by side. And
- 46:00she got to see all that. And so now her funeral is set for
- 46:02tomorrow. And because it's just he and his two other sisters, you know,
- 46:07they're kind of struggling to pay for it. Um So they have a
- 46:09go fund me page that we've linked in our story that you can help that
- 46:13family out if you want to. Um that it'll go towards his h or
- 46:16their funeral expenses for their mother. That's great. So you can find that
- 46:20at WP metronews dot com if you if you want to maybe help out with
- 46:23that family. That's a I read that story this morning before I came into
- 46:27work. It is a that is a touching and a heartbreaking story. It's
- 46:30a tear jerker for sure. Yeah, it definitely is. And then another
- 46:34story that you covered just this weekend is another tourism designation for the New River
- 46:42Gorge area. Now that's just recently been made into a National park, so
- 46:45this is expected to help some of the tourism in that area. Yeah,
- 46:46it's some New River Gorge National Park. They're in Fayette County. They keep
- 46:51getting awards, man, I mean they're they're getting recognized a lot after to
- 46:53this. Uh, you know, they became this national parking preserve and that's
- 46:58a great thing. So Outside mag magazine they've named the New Rivergords the best
- 47:01family trip in the US just based off accessibility, price points, things to
- 47:07do. I mean, we all know that there's tons of things to do,
- 47:09whitewater, rafting, hiking. I know I've been down there several times,
- 47:13and this is just another bright spot for the state of West Virginia,
- 47:15especially as we head into the summer months. Yeah, when you think about
- 47:19things like this, I remember back when I used to travel pre internet and
- 47:22you would get one of those road atlas is that would have like the scenic
- 47:24drives and stuff like that on it. And I imagine I didn't think about
- 47:28this back then, but I imagine it was really important, sort of like
- 47:30being in the phone book or something. It was really important for a community
- 47:34or for a stretch of road or for a state to be on that atlas
- 47:37because that people. I mean I did it when I was drivings, like,
- 47:39Hey, what route do I want to take? I want to take
- 47:40the scenic rout So you fast forward to today and when people were planning trips
- 47:45and stuff like that. For that kind of information to come up during a
- 47:46search, it's really important because that means, oh, hey, the families
- 47:50like to go there, maybe I'll give it a try. Oh yeah,
- 47:52that That's what I love about on the Tourism department does scenic routes, routes
- 47:55in the fall time, we're to see the best fall foliage. And I
- 47:59love that because sometimes you just don't know where those spots are. And they
- 48:01could be in a little nook and cranny that you just excuse me, wouldn't
- 48:05think, And so that's they definitely put out that information as well. Well.
