- 0:00Speaker 1: Tom Gleason is going to be at the Riverside Theater
- 0:02Speaker 1: this Saturday. Tickets are through ticket Tech and through official
- 0:05Speaker 1: tour outlets, and the tour is called out of Touch
- 0:09Speaker 1: and tell.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Us why Tom Gleason is with us this morning.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Good morning, Tom, oh, good morning. Yes, thanks for letting
- 0:17Speaker 3: everyone know I'm going to be there this Saturday.
- 0:19Speaker 4: And may I just remind everybody of course. Also twenty
- 0:22Speaker 4: nineteen Gold LOGI winner. Yeah, do you still bring that up?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Well, I kind of got over it a long time ago,
- 0:28Speaker 3: to be honest, before you were moved on and well, yeah,
- 0:33Speaker 3: because I won it and then like I won seven
- 0:37Speaker 3: Actor Awards which are more prestigious, I focus on that now.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I would tend to agree with you there. But you know,
- 0:44Speaker 2: it's back. I think what Sunday Week or something? It's
- 0:47Speaker 2: on again? Or is it this Sunday Sunday Week coming up?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's Sunday Week and it's coming up. And what's
- 0:54Speaker 3: happening is it's they've changed the rules. I don't know
- 0:56Speaker 3: if you know. Back when I won, Yeah, it was
- 0:59Speaker 3: quite controversial because what happened was the nominees were decided
- 1:03Speaker 3: by the general public. Yeah, that is no longer the case.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Ever since I won, they changed the rules and now
- 1:08Speaker 3: the nominees are chosen by industry experts.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Industry, I don't know.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Why you are a game changer?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Is that like a maths expert? Anyway, the show is
- 1:17Speaker 2: called out of Touch.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Yeah, this is the more important show.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Tell us why it's called out of touch because I
- 1:22Speaker 1: wouldn't have thought you were out of touch.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Well, I am a bit out of touch because I'm
- 1:27Speaker 3: just I'm too successful and it's awkward to try to
- 1:31Speaker 3: live like this during the cost of living crisis. I'm
- 1:34Speaker 3: trying to navigate it by just being honest with my crowd.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I mean, I did the show back in January at
- 1:38Speaker 3: the Regal Theater, and we put on extra shows and
- 1:41Speaker 3: they sold out, and so there's I've had to do
- 1:43Speaker 3: another one at the Exhibition Center, which is a really
- 1:45Speaker 3: big venue. And so I'm just being honest. So if
- 1:49Speaker 3: you want to just turn up and have my success
- 1:50Speaker 3: rubbed in your nose, then then come along.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so you don't read the room.
- 1:58Speaker 3: No, I don't read the room. I look at the room,
- 2:01Speaker 3: I ignore the room, and then just say what I
- 2:03Speaker 3: was going to say.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Anyway, he just looks out into the crowd and goes,
- 2:07Speaker 4: you're not me, You're not me, and we think.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It seems to work. Really, it seems to work really well.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I don't quite understand it, but I'm happy about it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Oh funny.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Australian audiences though, like that, aren't we And how does
- 2:22Speaker 1: because this is the big trip across the Great Divide,
- 2:24Speaker 1: how do Way audiences compare with the rest of the country.
- 2:30Speaker 3: To be honest, I kind of think audiences are kind
- 2:32Speaker 3: of the same now in Australia because everyone's got streaming
- 2:35Speaker 3: services so anyone can watch any comedian anywhere in the world,
- 2:38Speaker 3: any time of day. In the past, it used to
- 2:41Speaker 3: be different. I would have said, maybe twenty years ago,
- 2:44Speaker 3: I used to come over with the Melbourne Comedy road
- 2:46Speaker 3: Show and rather patronizingly, I would have described the Perth
- 2:50Speaker 3: audiences as grateful. But I think it is true. Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 3: I don't think that's true anymore. I think everyone's kind
- 2:57Speaker 3: of the same. We were.
- 3:02Speaker 4: We were needy, we were very needy.
- 3:04Speaker 2: We throw us a bone, we'll take.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Yeah, Like everyone's seen you on TV, you know, hence
- 3:13Speaker 4: the gold LOGI not everyone has seen you on stage.
- 3:17Speaker 4: For those who have never seen you on stage. What's
- 3:19Speaker 4: what's the big difference? Language, of course, is probably one
- 3:22Speaker 4: of them.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean, of course. Language. I mean I
- 3:26Speaker 3: don't really you know, yeah, I'm not bleeped when I'm
- 3:29Speaker 3: on stage, so you know, I do all the swearing.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But I mean some people get concerned by that. And
- 3:34Speaker 3: I've had people say to me and they go, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 3: good comedians don't have to swear to be funny. But
- 3:37Speaker 3: I always say to those people, you know, he didn't
- 3:39Speaker 3: swear in their act Rolf Harris, this is true.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That's bad.
- 3:48Speaker 4: You had to dig deep that excuse you.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You do actively encourage heckling, But have you ever had
- 3:56Speaker 1: a heckler land something.
- 3:58Speaker 2: That you know, genuinely sort of throw you or hurt you.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Well, I mean I always open up the show at
- 4:05Speaker 3: the end. I always invite the crowd to tell me
- 4:07Speaker 3: what they did or didn't believe, And so that is
- 4:10Speaker 3: a chance for people to yell out pretty much anything.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And weirdly enough, I did a show last weekend. I
- 4:15Speaker 3: was in Aubury, New South Wales, and someone yelled at
- 4:17Speaker 3: what's eleven times eleven?
- 4:20Speaker 2: What tell me?
- 4:23Speaker 3: I don't want me to do? Some basic multiplications twenty
- 4:26Speaker 3: one I didn't meant about.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Well, we've just had our napland results come through this
- 4:31Speaker 4: morning and no one's getting everything right. So it's a
- 4:34Speaker 4: fair question.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Tom Ursula Carlson, I just read recently has a safe
- 4:44Speaker 1: word at hersh I think it's bucket. Someone in the
- 4:48Speaker 1: audience will yell out bucket if they feel that there
- 4:51Speaker 1: is a disruptive person among them that needs to be removed,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and she will bring in security and have them immediately removed.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Have you ever thought about having a safe word.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Well, I've found that if you get security to remove
- 5:03Speaker 3: a heckler on your behalf the crowded in austral doesn't
- 5:06Speaker 3: really respect that. They turn on you. I like to
- 5:09Speaker 3: put out my own fires. If I'm starting fires, I
- 5:11Speaker 3: like to put them out myself, So I prefer to
- 5:14Speaker 3: do some verbal gymnastics to make them pipe down.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Oh good, all right, I like that.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Well, so don't take him on. He's armed and he's prepared.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, well you can know you can take me on.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But it'll make it more fun for us, that's for sure.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Tom Gleason is out of touch and we love him
- 5:35Speaker 1: for it. It's this Saturday at the Riverside Theater Tickets
- 5:37Speaker 1: are through ticket Tech and official tour Outlet's see on Saturday,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Tom No
- 5:41Speaker 3: Thanks so much, Tom,
