- 0:00Speaker 1: Lesejo Mokwena pressed her palm against the rift's edge, and
- 0:03Speaker 1: the spiral mark flared cold. Nomusa, I need answers. What
- 0:09Speaker 1: did I just become? Nomusa's voice crackled through the helmet speaker,
- 0:13Speaker 1: thin and distant. A key. But not the kind that
- 0:17Speaker 1: opens doors. The kind that locks them from the inside.
- 0:21Speaker 1: A pause. The ancestors are silent, Lesejo. Whatever you touched,
- 0:27Speaker 1: it's older than them. Older than the stone circle. I
- 0:30Speaker 1: can feel it through you, like a cold hand on
- 0:33Speaker 1: my spine. Lesejo turned toward the lander, four hundred meters away,
- 0:38Speaker 1: its silver hull a dull glint against the salmon sky.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Her oxygen read fourteen percent. She had minutes, not hours.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But the rift behind her, the vertical wound of black glass,
- 0:50Speaker 1: had begun to hum, a low frequency that vibrated through
- 0:53Speaker 1: her boots and into her teeth. The faceless ones were gone,
- 0:57Speaker 1: crumbled to dust. but their absence felt like a held breath.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'm coming back, she said, though she wasn't sure she
- 1:04Speaker 1: meant the lander or something else entirely. Tell me how
- 1:07Speaker 1: to close it. You can't close it, Nomusa said. Not
- 1:11Speaker 1: from your side. You have to— The signal dissolved into static,
- 1:15Speaker 1: then silence. Lesejo tapped her comm unit. Nothing. She was
- 1:20Speaker 1: alone again, with a mark on her hand and a
- 1:23Speaker 1: door in the dust that refused to die. She took
- 1:26Speaker 1: three steps toward the lander before the ground shuddered. The
- 1:30Speaker 1: rift flared, not with light, but with a kind of gravity,
- 1:34Speaker 1: a pull that made her stomach drop like a sudden fall.
- 1:37Speaker 1: The spiral on her palm burned cold. She looked down
- 1:41Speaker 1: and saw the mark uncoiling, the blue lines stretching across
- 1:45Speaker 1: her glove, reaching toward the rift as if they were
- 1:48Speaker 1: roots seeking water. No, she whispered, but her feet were
- 1:52Speaker 1: already sliding backward. dust hissing beneath her boots. She dug
- 1:57Speaker 1: in her heels, grabbed at the air, but the pull
- 1:59Speaker 1: was patient and absolute. The rift swallowed her whole. Darkness.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Not the darkness of a closed room or a moonless night,
- 2:08Speaker 1: but the darkness of deep space, absolute and indifferent. Lesejo
- 2:13Speaker 1: couldn't tell if her eyes were open or closed. She
- 2:16Speaker 1: couldn't feel her limbs, her suit, her breath. She was
- 2:20Speaker 1: a thought floating in nothing, and the nothing was aware
- 2:23Speaker 1: of her. Then, light, blinding, white gold, searing through her
- 2:29Speaker 1: like a blade. She gasped, and the gasp was real,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and her lungs filled with air that tasted of rain
- 2:35Speaker 1: and green things, and something faintly sweet, like ripe fruit.
- 2:40Speaker 1: She opened her eyes. She was lying on her back,
- 2:43Speaker 1: on a surface that felt like moss, soft and springy,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and above her stretched a sky the colour of lapis lazuli, unclouded, warm.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Two moons hung in that sky, one pale silver, one
- 2:57Speaker 1: faintly rose, and between them a flock of creatures wheeled
- 3:01Speaker 1: and called in voices like wind chimes. Lesejo sat up slowly.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Her suit was gone. She wore a simple tunic of
- 3:09Speaker 1: woven fibre, the colour of sand, and her feet were bare.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The spiral mark remained on her palm, but it had
- 3:17Speaker 1: stopped glowing. It looked like a tattoo now, old and faded.
- 3:22Speaker 1: She was in a clearing at the edge of a forest.
- 3:25Speaker 1: The trees were tall and slender, their bark smooth and silver,
- 3:29Speaker 1: their leaves a deep violet that shimmered when the breeze
- 3:32Speaker 1: moved them. Beyond the trees she could see towers, not
- 3:36Speaker 1: of metal or glass, but of something that looked like
- 3:39Speaker 1: carved bone, ivory white and curving, rising from the canopy
- 3:44Speaker 1: like the ribs of a great beast. They were beautiful.
- 3:47Speaker 1: They were impossible. Mars, she whispered. This is Mars! A
- 3:54Speaker 1: sound behind her. She turned. A figure stood at the
- 3:57Speaker 1: edge of the clearing, tall and slender, its skin the
- 4:00Speaker 1: colour of polished obsidian, its eyes large and dark and luminous.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It wore robes of shifting light, and in its hands
- 4:08Speaker 1: it held a staff of twisted silver. It did not speak,
- 4:12Speaker 1: but Lesejo understood it anyway, the way she had understood
- 4:16Speaker 1: the faceless ones, not in words, but in a pressure
- 4:19Speaker 1: against her mind. a meaning that arrived whole. You are
- 4:24Speaker 1: the first. We have waited a long time. Lesejo rose
- 4:29Speaker 1: to her feet. Her heart hammered, but her voice was steady.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Waited for what? The figure tilted its head. For the key.
- 4:38Speaker 1: The door you opened on the Red Plain. It was
- 4:40Speaker 1: not the first. It was the last. The others have
- 4:44Speaker 1: been closed for millennia. You are the one who will
- 4:47Speaker 1: open them all, or seal them forever. The choice is yours,
- 4:51Speaker 1: but you must make it before the M.E.P. finds you.
- 4:55Speaker 1: They do not want the doors opened. They do not
- 4:57Speaker 1: want you here at all. Lesejo looked at the spiral
- 5:01Speaker 1: on her palm, then at the impossible city rising from
- 5:04Speaker 1: the violet forest, then at the two moons and the
- 5:07Speaker 1: wheeling creatures and the air that smelled of rain. She
- 5:11Speaker 1: thought of earth, of Nomusa and the stone circle, of
- 5:14Speaker 1: her grandmother's kitchen in Mahikeng. She thought of the lander,
- 5:18Speaker 1: four hundred meters away, with its dwindling oxygen and its clean,
- 5:22Speaker 1: ordinary death. I didn't come here to die quietly, she said,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but I didn't come here to be a weapon either.
- 5:30Speaker 1: She met the figure's luminous eyes. Show me the doors.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I'll decide for myself.
