Latest / Foul Territory / Marlins Owner Bruce Sherman joins FT Network’s “Fish On First”
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Today, we are really pleased to be joined by the
- 0:05Speaker 1: principal owner and chairman of your Miami Marlins, Bruce Sherman.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Mister Bruce, I can't thank you enough for taking the
- 0:12Speaker 1: time to spend it here with us this morning. How's
- 0:15Speaker 1: your morning going?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Morning's going great? And I want to thank you guys
- 0:19Speaker 2: for hosting me and for all your tendants with all
- 0:22Speaker 2: the games. And Kevin was at the preps, got up
- 0:24Speaker 2: really early. He was at the All Star Game. And
- 0:27Speaker 2: I listened to your stuff. I read your stuff, I
- 0:29Speaker 2: watch your stuff, and it's good to be here.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We appreciate it. You watch so much. And you mentioned
- 0:34Speaker 1: Auto Lopez's how fun is it watching some of your
- 0:37Speaker 1: players every year? Obviously watching some of your players participate
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the Midsummer Class like every July.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I think we could have had more than two. It's
- 0:46Speaker 2: great you don't when anybody get hurt. But we've got
- 0:49Speaker 2: a lot of all stars on that team and a
- 0:50Speaker 2: lot of emerging all stars.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Bruce, you're coming up on a ten year anniversary since
- 0:56Speaker 1: when you bought the Miami Marlins in October of twenty seventeen. Serious,
- 1:00Speaker 1: how the reality of being the Miami Marlins owner has
- 1:03Speaker 1: compared with what you expected going in. How is it differed.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What has your experience been like owning this Marlins team.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I guess we're coming up a ninth at seventeenth right
- 1:14Speaker 2: closed in October seventeen. It's one of the great privileges
- 1:18Speaker 2: and thrills I've had in life. I just love where
- 1:23Speaker 2: we're headed. I enjoy the interaction with all the people.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I enjoy my interaction with our other owners, with all
- 1:31Speaker 2: the management, with the front office. And I'm a passionate
- 1:35Speaker 2: baseball fan. I've lived in Florida fifty years, and I
- 1:38Speaker 2: remember we didn't have baseball in Florida. So it was
- 1:41Speaker 2: an exciting day when the Florida Marlins came into existence.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It's even more exciting now with the privilege of, as
- 1:48Speaker 2: you said, getting to be the person being the chairman
- 1:51Speaker 2: of principal owner. I guess you further on that. It's
- 2:01Speaker 2: been an evolution, their highs and their lows. We're in
- 2:04Speaker 2: our eighth year of operations, and it's particularly gratified to
- 2:09Speaker 2: see where we're headed and the direction we're headed in
- 2:12Speaker 2: which I'm really very positive about.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I think we can tackle some of the quote unquote
- 2:17Speaker 1: misconceptions that fans may have pretty early in this show.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm curious you and I have spoken very really once
- 2:23Speaker 1: or just how maybe fans don't understand how lucrative it
- 2:26Speaker 1: exactly is to own a major league team. You know,
- 2:29Speaker 1: some teams, it is. Some teams, it's not, just not
- 2:31Speaker 1: as lucrative as fans seem to think. What is one
- 2:34Speaker 1: misconceptions misconception the fans have about the organization's finances that
- 2:38Speaker 1: maybe you'd like to nip in the butt.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Oh you got it. If you have an hour, I
- 2:43Speaker 2: could talk about that. But the reality is I didn't
- 2:48Speaker 2: get involved, and I don't believe all my partners got
- 2:51Speaker 2: involved just for a quick internal rate of return. We're
- 2:54Speaker 2: all passionate about baseball. We're very healthy financially, very healthy
- 3:00Speaker 2: financial organization, and with that comes never taking funds out
- 3:07Speaker 2: of the stadium team and putting funds back in and
- 3:10Speaker 2: as a result, that allows us to build subject sustainable
- 3:15Speaker 2: versus just something in a one shot deal. Fans are
- 3:18Speaker 2: always interested in just very simply, you know, play a
- 3:21Speaker 2: payroll and trade deadline. All the noise. We're doing it
- 3:25Speaker 2: in a I think terrific manner. Hiring the best people,
- 3:30Speaker 2: engaging the best people and investing throughout the organization to
- 3:33Speaker 2: build something that's sustainable forever and at the same time
- 3:39Speaker 2: very important to the South Florida community. And I guess
- 3:43Speaker 2: that's you know, critical, especially when you look at the
- 3:47Speaker 2: investments we made in baseball operations. It's not popular for
- 3:51Speaker 2: fans or for media to talk about it, but we
- 3:55Speaker 2: put hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody looks at
- 3:58Speaker 2: that number, over and above the urch price into the
- 4:01Speaker 2: Marlins to create an organization of Peter Bendix, Gabe Kapler,
- 4:07Speaker 2: Clayton mccullor, et cetera would be thrilled to operate in.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And it's not just the people, which is a substantial investment,
- 4:15Speaker 2: it's the facilities. And I repeated it, but the investment
- 4:19Speaker 2: we made in the Dominican Republic several years ago to
- 4:22Speaker 2: be state of the art are Jupiter Complex, which took
- 4:26Speaker 2: several years and there's even more construction going on now,
- 4:29Speaker 2: is state of the art. And I get to visit
- 4:31Speaker 2: with the players and some of the fans and some
- 4:33Speaker 2: of the front office and see the changes we made.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And it doesn't even stop there. It continues with the
- 4:40Speaker 2: tens of millions of dollars approvements we made at Lone Depot,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and the fans don't get to go behind the doors.
- 4:46Speaker 2: We do. And I think that's a big misconception. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: I think you're starting to see now the fruits of
- 4:52Speaker 2: all those efforts in the third year of Peter Bendix.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Buruse appreciate you taking the time. You've made a career
- 5:01Speaker 3: out of making good events and investments. Where do you
- 5:04Speaker 3: think the models ranking those investments that you've made.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I only got to this point with my fellow owners
- 5:14Speaker 2: by being a good investor and good at what I
- 5:16Speaker 2: did in my business, both developing and hiring lots of
- 5:19Speaker 2: people and then ultimately selling the business but running it
- 5:22Speaker 2: for twenty five years. This investment was never about internal
- 5:25Speaker 2: rate of return, because only the only internal rate of
- 5:29Speaker 2: return comes at the end of the day someday in
- 5:31Speaker 2: the future of Unbeknowned State. The reality is it's low.
- 5:36Speaker 2: There's psychic benefits, there's the devernment benefits. I don't miss
- 5:40Speaker 2: a pitch both the thirty or forty home games, I
- 5:44Speaker 2: go to every single away game. I try to go
- 5:49Speaker 2: to as many way games as possible, and I interact
- 5:52Speaker 2: with all the people so you don't see that because
- 5:55Speaker 2: you're appropriately talking to the management group, not the ownership group.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And I get extraordinary benefit from knowing the baseball was
- 6:04Speaker 2: round eight years ago and knowing as much as I
- 6:07Speaker 2: know now about all the intricacies of owning and running
- 6:09Speaker 2: a baseball team, and taking the awesome responsibility of being
- 6:12Speaker 2: the control person and being the ultimate authority at every decision.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Bruce, one of the times we get to talk to
- 6:19Speaker 3: you during the season is at spring training during the
- 6:22Speaker 3: first Stiffs full squad, and you deliver some notable sound bites.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Last year you said that the team will win more
- 6:28Speaker 3: games than people expected. That was true in twenty twenty five.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I think we're gonna win a lot of games, a
- 6:32Speaker 2: lot more games. And you think we're gonna win this.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Year that this year you made it known that your
- 6:37Speaker 3: focus is to wi and win. Where does that conviction
- 6:42Speaker 3: come from? And where do these do you plan these
- 6:45Speaker 3: ahead of time? How does the how do these sound
- 6:48Speaker 3: bites end up working out for you? They've worked out
- 6:50Speaker 3: pretty well the last two years.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I wish I was that smart, but believe me, I'm not.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And it just comes from the heart. Why I mind
- 7:00Speaker 2: everybody at the end of the day, this is a
- 7:02Speaker 2: baseball team. We can have special events at lone depot,
- 7:06Speaker 2: and CAROLINEA. O'Connor does an extraordinary job coordinating these events,
- 7:11Speaker 2: our staff under her and bringing people into events, whether
- 7:14Speaker 2: it's the Winter Classic, whether it's you know, Monster Truck
- 7:17Speaker 2: or any other event. Nothing is important other than winning.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And that's why I've spent so much of my time
- 7:25Speaker 2: on the operations side, working with Peter, working with Gabe,
- 7:30Speaker 2: and providing the financial resources and providing the guidance to
- 7:34Speaker 2: be successful. And maybe I was lucky with those two statements,
- 7:39Speaker 2: but I believe it because I see the development not
- 7:42Speaker 2: only at the major league level, I see the development
- 7:44Speaker 2: at the minor league level. I was talking to Peter
- 7:46Speaker 2: just the other day and I looked at some of
- 7:48Speaker 2: the earlier years when you know, six seven, eight nine
- 7:51Speaker 2: were up in the lineup, and you wonder where the
- 7:52Speaker 2: runs were going to come from. Now, when six seven,
- 7:55Speaker 2: eight nine are in the lineup, I feel a lot
- 7:57Speaker 2: more confident they have at any other point in the season.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And you don't have to go beyond that. You can
- 8:01Speaker 2: look at our relief pitching. You've got our starting pitching. Yes,
- 8:04Speaker 2: we've had some injuries, but everybody has injuries. So my
- 8:07Speaker 2: confidence comes from Clayton and Peter Dabe Capler and the
- 8:15Speaker 2: culture that they've created. Yes, on a day to day basis,
- 8:19Speaker 2: they're working the ten twelve hours a day home and away,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and they're creating the culture, ownership of supporting that culture,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and it seems to be going in the right direction.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm really happy about that. And the culture even goes
- 8:30Speaker 2: beyond that. We do a lot in the community with
- 8:31Speaker 2: the Mallage Foundation. I do things personally as well, which
- 8:36Speaker 2: you don't see. But most importantly, Caroline and the team
- 8:40Speaker 2: do an awful lot to create a good feeling in
- 8:44Speaker 2: baseball with everything in South Florida, I just hope it
- 8:47Speaker 2: extends from the Miami area all the way up to
- 8:50Speaker 2: the northern parts of Palm Beach County.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Many people have this problem. I want to eat healthy.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I have the willpower, I don't have the time and
- 8:58Speaker 4: the organization. I need help.
- 9:00Speaker 5: You do, I mean, you go to factor. I got
- 9:02Speaker 5: two boys that are looking for the gains and they
- 9:04Speaker 5: always come in the house, which is I'm looking for food.
- 9:09Speaker 5: Now they have actual healthy food that is great for them,
- 9:13Speaker 5: and you know what, it's ready in the fridge. For
- 9:15Speaker 5: them to pop in and make it right away.
- 9:17Speaker 4: And they have meals built around your goals. It could
- 9:20Speaker 4: be weight loss, overall nutrition gains more protein, fresh never frozen,
- 9:25Speaker 4: over one hundred rotating weekly meals including globally inspired flavors
- 9:31Speaker 4: like Mediterranean and Asian. I get all kinds of different
- 9:34Speaker 4: salads from Factor that I love, quick easy. They can
- 9:38Speaker 4: be ready in two minutes. Head to Factor Meals dot com.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Slash foul fifty off and use code foul fiftyff to
- 9:46Speaker 4: get fifty percent off and free daily greens per box
- 9:49Speaker 4: with new subscription only, while supplies last until nine twenty seven,
- 9:52Speaker 4: twenty six.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Bruce, the Monitsor are currently seven games over five hundred.
- 9:57Speaker 3: It's good enough for the third National League walidcart spot.
- 10:00Speaker 3: What have been your thoughts and now Clayton and the
- 10:01Speaker 3: team have played up to this point.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It's been great. Nobody likes being swept the last three
- 10:09Speaker 2: games before the All Star Game, but you take it
- 10:11Speaker 2: on balance the organization and even in that game we
- 10:17Speaker 2: ran into some good left handed pitching and we ran
- 10:19Speaker 2: into some very uh you know, not a not a
- 10:25Speaker 2: team that just come off some losses, and I think
- 10:28Speaker 2: you have to take it on balanced. So I'm extraordinarily excited.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I appreciate the fans coming out in more size now
- 10:35Speaker 2: and I probably enjoy more than anything else, how hard
- 10:39Speaker 2: the team is playing, how smart they're playing, how they
- 10:42Speaker 2: compete all night innings, the comeback wins, and the consistency,
- 10:46Speaker 2: I mean one of the things. And you know I've
- 10:49Speaker 2: read your columns. When the Times people criticize some of
- 10:52Speaker 2: the moves we make in the coaching staff, the reality
- 10:54Speaker 2: is unbalanced. I love the consistency. I love the moves.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I love that as a well thought our plan for
- 11:01Speaker 2: every move that's made before the game. During the game,
- 11:05Speaker 2: it's Clayton and the coaches. They have to run. They're
- 11:08Speaker 2: involved in every aspect, and it's truly extraordinary to see
- 11:12Speaker 2: the amount of effort that goes into every aspect, most
- 11:15Speaker 2: of which is not seen, even the extraordinary training methods
- 11:21Speaker 2: we're using. All right, we're the only team still calling
- 11:23Speaker 2: pitchers from the which is not training. But with the
- 11:26Speaker 2: team still calling pitches from the dugout our training sometimes
- 11:29Speaker 2: out there you've seen it. It's bring training and that
- 11:32Speaker 2: gives me a lot of beliefs. And you know, the
- 11:34Speaker 2: organization that the front office said They all may not work,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but we're going to try them and we're gonna try
- 11:40Speaker 2: to add value to the organization, not just the twenty
- 11:43Speaker 2: six of twenty seven, twenty nine and beyond. And that
- 11:47Speaker 2: gives me great comfort in the people because it's all
- 11:50Speaker 2: about people. At the end of the day, I'm not
- 11:52Speaker 2: hitting the ball and I'm not throwing the ball, and
- 11:55Speaker 2: they're developing a lot of good people and you see
- 11:57Speaker 2: it in the farm system. We all have our favorites
- 11:59Speaker 2: and it's going in the right direction. So I'm happy
- 12:02Speaker 2: about that.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And the innovation is really a lot of fun to
- 12:04Speaker 1: watch from the outside, Bruce. Every single time we have visitors,
- 12:08Speaker 1: it's like, what the heck is that during vatting practice.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But my next question sort of is about the baseball
- 12:14Speaker 1: operation side of things. You recently spoke to Marlins Radio
- 12:17Speaker 1: talking very highly and fondly about Sanielle Cantara, who was
- 12:20Speaker 1: fully overlapped with your tenure with the Miami Marlins. I
- 12:23Speaker 1: know what he means to you, to the community, to
- 12:25Speaker 1: the city, and you mentioned that you look forward to
- 12:28Speaker 1: having this guy be with Miami for a long time.
- 12:30Speaker 1: My question is, how do you balance the emotional slash
- 12:34Speaker 1: business aspect of a player like that without interfering with
- 12:38Speaker 1: Baseball operation side and saying, okay, hey, maybe we should
- 12:42Speaker 1: trade the guy, even though everyone doesn't want that to happen.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Look, that's a great question. And if you look at
- 12:50Speaker 2: the job that the front office is done, headed by
- 12:53Speaker 2: Peter on the whether it's rup five, whether it's trade.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I mean I had talked, We had talked everybody. When
- 13:01Speaker 2: you know a two time batting champion was traded. Okay,
- 13:04Speaker 2: we've been through this movie. We've seen the movie Sandy's Special,
- 13:09Speaker 2: Sandy Special. I made those comments with a lot of
- 13:12Speaker 2: thought in them. You know, I know all the economics.
- 13:16Speaker 2: We understand the economics, and Sandy's Special. He believes so
- 13:21Speaker 2: much the organization on the field, off the field. And
- 13:25Speaker 2: I mean, if you just look at what Sandy's done.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I mean I flew with him, you know, six hour
- 13:30Speaker 2: round trip to the Dominican. What a wonderful person. His
- 13:34Speaker 2: English language is perfect now four or five years ago.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Wasn't guess what my Spanish is like zero? Okay, So
- 13:42Speaker 2: I give people an awful lot of credit, not because
- 13:45Speaker 2: he won the cy Young Ward alone, because of who
- 13:47Speaker 2: the person he is, the family man, he is and
- 13:50Speaker 2: what he's done. I mean, he's a mentor to your
- 13:52Speaker 2: he's a mentor to young pictures, he's a leader. We
- 13:55Speaker 2: need that kind of presence in the clubhouse and we
- 13:57Speaker 2: need that kind of person, and he's just special and
- 14:02Speaker 2: I'm looking forward him to pitching the rest of the
- 14:04Speaker 2: year for sure.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Bruce Kevin mentioned that you guys are seven games over
- 14:07Speaker 1: five hundred. You guys are in a position to potentially
- 14:10Speaker 1: add to your roster to really attack a playoff spot.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You guys are even close to an anda least division title,
- 14:16Speaker 1: something that hasn't been done in franchise history. Have you
- 14:18Speaker 1: given Peter Bendix and the rest of the basal operations
- 14:21Speaker 1: the green light to add whatever resource is necessary to
- 14:24Speaker 1: this roster to make it a World Series contender.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Peter has a green light. It's not lost on me
- 14:31Speaker 2: the benefits of being a division champion versus a playoff spot.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I lived through twenty three with the Phillies. I lived
- 14:39Speaker 2: through twenty twenty was no fans, There wasn't a lot
- 14:43Speaker 2: of fun. And look what we did in twenty three.
- 14:46Speaker 2: That was a big greae. We took on a lot
- 14:48Speaker 2: of money twenty three for you know, I think Josh Bellenberger,
- 14:52Speaker 2: to their credit, made a difference in getting us to
- 14:54Speaker 2: the playoffs that year. The picture not so much, but
- 14:58Speaker 2: it was good. So as a result, that's available, and
- 15:02Speaker 2: that doesn't mean you mortgage one year for the next.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And it's something that the deep dive that our front
- 15:10Speaker 2: office will go through, which is the same deep dive
- 15:13Speaker 2: I did in my business all those years, and I
- 15:15Speaker 2: was fortunate enough to be in this pitution will take place.
- 15:18Speaker 2: There's still what sixteen games or so left, and we
- 15:21Speaker 2: don't know what it's going to look like. There are percentages,
- 15:24Speaker 2: there's analysis, there's players, there's contracts. All the building blocks
- 15:28Speaker 2: are there, and I know that Peter will do a
- 15:31Speaker 2: very very thorough job. But I'm relying on Peter Bendix.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I'm not relying on Bruce Sherman's instincts.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Right, and Peter Bendix's instincts is what gotten you this
- 15:41Speaker 1: far so quickly since hiring mister Peter, there's one thing
- 15:44Speaker 1: I want to go off topic with you very quickly.
- 15:46Speaker 1: It's just the South Florida market. Since you bought the
- 15:49Speaker 1: team in October twenty seventeen, do you see baseball being
- 15:53Speaker 1: sustainable in this market? You mentioned Palm Beachy sort of,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I guess limited to their access to the ballpark. And
- 15:59Speaker 1: I know you choose to where the ballpark was chosen,
- 16:01Speaker 1: but where it was placed. But what are your thoughts
- 16:04Speaker 1: on the long term part of baseball being in South Florida.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I'm really optimistic. You can talk about the growth of
- 16:12Speaker 2: the population. You could talk about traffic patterns, you could
- 16:15Speaker 2: talk about a lot of things. You could talk about
- 16:16Speaker 2: public transportation, but mostly we all know when we have
- 16:20Speaker 2: fifteen thousand people there over the weekend per game in Cleveland,
- 16:23Speaker 2: people can get there, they can park the car, they
- 16:26Speaker 2: can get on ninety five, they can take the train
- 16:29Speaker 2: down there. The neighborood is becoming very easy place. Access
- 16:35Speaker 2: is improved, and I want people to look at it,
- 16:38Speaker 2: not when there's forty thousand people there for the Winter
- 16:41Speaker 2: Classic and there's a little more traffic in the parking lot,
- 16:44Speaker 2: but to focus on what Caroline and the team has
- 16:46Speaker 2: done to make ingress and Egress acceptable, to provide the
- 16:50Speaker 2: home runner van if you will to come off the train,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and I think if you win, people will come out.
- 16:58Speaker 2: They want a winner, they've experienced a winner. And this
- 17:02Speaker 2: is not the organization that's going to do what's happened
- 17:05Speaker 2: in the past. You win, and if you don't get
- 17:07Speaker 2: enough of ten, that just say, oh okay, I'm disrupting
- 17:10Speaker 2: the organization. We're not disruptors, we're builders. And that's why
- 17:14Speaker 2: Peter was hired. That's why someone have gave Caplish staminers
- 17:17Speaker 2: here and that's why Clayton joined the organization. We want
- 17:20Speaker 2: to be sustained. We want to win, and there's no
- 17:22Speaker 2: reason get anything's going around in baseball that we can't
- 17:25Speaker 2: be sustainable in winning for a long long time and
- 17:28Speaker 2: change the faiths of perception of not only baseball in Miami,
- 17:33Speaker 2: but baseball in Florida as well.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Big second half of the season coming up, there might
- 17:38Speaker 4: be a hot ticket, a rivalry series, a sold out
- 17:42Speaker 4: experience they need to get your hands on, and Seakeeek
- 17:45Speaker 4: is the spot for that. You can find good, good pricing.
- 17:49Speaker 4: They help you with the pricing green dot good, red
- 17:51Speaker 4: dot not as good, and they help you with your
- 17:54Speaker 4: view of the seat for some big matchups coming up
- 17:56Speaker 4: in August, September and eventually leading up to playoffs.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Why would you not your Sea geek If you want

- 18:37Speaker 1: Since purchasing the team, we mentioned this is your ninth year.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Which do you consider your best decisions and moments during
- 18:43Speaker 1: this tenure and what are some things that you would
- 18:45Speaker 1: have maybe done differently?
- 18:47Speaker 2: Wow? Best decision of which there are many, Okay, is
- 18:57Speaker 2: clearly revamping the management he did. Okay, I think those
- 19:02Speaker 2: decisions and giving Peter and the organization the financial tools
- 19:08Speaker 2: to do what they've done have done, emphasize the cultural
- 19:14Speaker 2: nature and whether it's the culture of treating the families
- 19:18Speaker 2: specifically wonderful, the players' families and girlfriends, whatever the nutrition elements,
- 19:25Speaker 2: the player development side, not just with the twenty six
- 19:29Speaker 2: players you see in the dugout, but the two hundred
- 19:31Speaker 2: and seventy players that are in the whole organization. So
- 19:36Speaker 2: that decision is something I'm really proud of. I'm proud
- 19:41Speaker 2: that Caroline's been with me for the full full eight years.
- 19:46Speaker 2: It alleviates a lot of responsibility. Knows she's going to
- 19:48Speaker 2: take care of everything, and the commitments from the other
- 19:52Speaker 2: owners to the plan that we have undertaken here, which
- 19:56Speaker 2: is to invest these substantial resources that we've done to
- 20:00Speaker 2: get in winning a winning culture. In terms of you know, disappointments,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I hate losing. I am I disappointed that if we
- 20:13Speaker 2: win and the fans don't come out, that will be disappointing.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But I see in twenty when they couldn't come out
- 20:19Speaker 2: because of COVID, what I see in twenty three at
- 20:22Speaker 2: upticking attendance, and I expect to see an uptick intendancy
- 20:25Speaker 2: now because I expect to win going forward. I'm not
- 20:28Speaker 2: playing the game every day. Petere's not playing the game.
- 20:31Speaker 2: But if you get the best twenty six people that
- 20:33Speaker 2: Doug out you can have, you're going to have success.
- 20:37Speaker 2: So that is a you know, a reasonable question, I
- 20:40Speaker 2: think a reasonable good summer.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Bruce, last one, again, appreciate you doing this a lot.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Just what message would you give to the fans that
- 20:48Speaker 3: are still doubting this team, that are still doubting what's
- 20:50Speaker 3: going on here in Miami and you know, to get
- 20:53Speaker 3: fans to come out and support this team in the
- 20:55Speaker 3: second half, you know, a team that's playing really good
- 20:57Speaker 3: baseball in these last two months.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I think the simplest way to look at that is,
- 21:03Speaker 2: I'm a big analytics person, a data person that was
- 21:05Speaker 2: part of my career, and certainly Peter in the front
- 21:08Speaker 2: office are very data oriented. If the average fan just
- 21:12Speaker 2: looks at simple statistics of the thirty teams in baseball,
- 21:16Speaker 2: not only wins and losses, but data points, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 2: straight up the middle, Joe mack outro X Marci, people
- 21:27Speaker 2: like that, and then they look at the data. I
- 21:29Speaker 2: don't know if for eight to tenth and team batting
- 21:31Speaker 2: average over seven and ninth in one category or eleventh
- 21:34Speaker 2: in the era, but we're no longer twenty fifth to
- 21:37Speaker 2: thirtieth than any categories with the leading in stolen base
- 21:40Speaker 2: So look at the data and the data translert translates
- 21:44Speaker 2: to wins and losses. So as a result, there's no
- 21:47Speaker 2: reason not to come. It's an inexpensive form. Relevantly, speaking
- 21:51Speaker 2: of entertainment, we still have these packages. You get into
- 21:54Speaker 2: that stadium for ten dollars, you get a hot dog,
- 21:55Speaker 2: you have four for forty four. You can come in
- 21:58Speaker 2: on the special promotions, you get gifts. It's a wonderful
- 22:01Speaker 2: family outing. One thing I can tell you speaking to
- 22:03Speaker 2: a lot of fans, not only the fans in the
- 22:05Speaker 2: members area we have the P and C Club, but
- 22:08Speaker 2: the average fan is excited about what we're doing. They
- 22:12Speaker 2: believe in it. The reality is we're winning. It's an
- 22:16Speaker 2: exciting team. We run, we steal bases, we take extra bases.
- 22:21Speaker 2: We're hitting home runs now, so what a great experience.
- 22:25Speaker 2: And we organize it with a family intent. And there's
- 22:29Speaker 2: nothing in the games now only two and a half hours.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Unless we're hitting a lot of runs. It hits then
- 22:33Speaker 2: there're three hours. But it's just a family entertainment. There's
- 22:37Speaker 2: no reason not to come. Caroline always reminds we want
- 22:40Speaker 2: to get one fan of a time, and Peter always
- 22:42Speaker 2: reminds me we want to get one win at a time,
- 22:45Speaker 2: but not just for this year, but for sustainable success
- 22:48Speaker 2: for the long period. And I think absolutely that's what
- 22:50Speaker 2: we're doing.
- 22:51Speaker 1: You are surrounded by the right people, it appears, and
- 22:53Speaker 1: for what it's worth, I completely concur I think there's
- 22:56Speaker 1: no reason to not be attending a Marlins game. It's
- 22:58Speaker 1: not in a bad area at all. It's very easy
- 23:01Speaker 1: to get to and there's fun baseball going on, and
- 23:03Speaker 1: you're a baseball fan. There's absolutely zero reason for that
- 23:06Speaker 1: sit And I'll.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Leave you with one thing, the additional commitment we made
- 23:10Speaker 2: to Miami Live, which is going to be on the
- 23:12Speaker 2: west side of the ballpark. That'll be open not really
- 23:16Speaker 2: this year when you come to games, but next year.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Whether it's Miami Live or whether it's going to a game.
- 23:22Speaker 2: There's great opportunities, and our players participate in so many
- 23:25Speaker 2: community events. It's really wonderful and you can get to
- 23:28Speaker 2: know them. It's really great, great sport. I played it
- 23:32Speaker 2: as a kid and we all grew up in a
- 23:34Speaker 2: you five or six of you there, Arenfisher first, wouldn't
- 23:37Speaker 2: be here if you didn't love baseball yourself. Yeah, so
- 23:40Speaker 2: I thank you, thanks, thank you for having me on.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 23:43Speaker 1: You certainly got that right, mister Bruce, Thank you so
- 23:46Speaker 1: much for taking the time. We know how busy times are,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and hopefully this is going to be an excellent second
- 23:52Speaker 1: half that we'll all remember for a very long time.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And hey, who knows, maybe ten games over five hundred
- 23:56Speaker 1: next year we can do this again.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Absolutely, go Marlins. Let's get the playoffs. Bye bye, bye bye.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Thank you very much for Kevin, for myself or Bruce,
- 24:04Speaker 1: thank you all for listening, and as always, go Fish.
