- 0:07On October 5th, 1967, the St. Louis Cardinals faced the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for Game 2 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:16The Cardinals led the best of seven series, one game to none, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 2 featuring announcers Pee Wee Reese and Harry Carey.
- 0:25Thank you very much, Pee Wee and hello again everybody. A beautiful baseball afternoon, but please now remember blowing towards right field.
- 0:33It should help the left-handed batter. Jim Lomborg, L-O-M-B-O-R-G, just 24 years old, and this fella's arrived in a hurry.
- 0:41Lomborg, tall and rangy, nice, easy, fluid pitching motion.
- 0:48A Southern California boy. This is his third season with the Red Sox.
- 0:56He started in professional baseball only three years ago at Winston-Salem. He won six and he lost two there.
- 1:03At Seattle, at the point of that season, he won five and lost seven. Then with the Red Sox, in 65, he won nine and lost 17.
- 1:12Last year he was a 500 pitcher at 10 and 10, and this year he blossomed into one of the best pitchers in the America League.
- 1:19In fact, he paced all pitchers with a 22-victory total, losing only nine.
- 1:25There goes Elston Howard's throw down to second base, and we're all set to go. Here comes Luke Rock.
- 1:34Rock, who had four out of four yesterday, stole two bases, scored both runs, was on base five times in a row.
- 1:42The ballpark here at Fenway is jam-packed. Rock steps into the batter's box. He loves to hit the first ball.
- 1:49The Red Sox have a good book on the cardinals. They know all about these hitting tendencies, but even knowing about them sometimes doesn't help it.
- 2:01Here's Lomborg getting set up and Howard is giving the signal. The outfield straight away.
- 2:06And Lomborg into the windup, the first pitch of the ballgame. High and inside, it's spun him away.
- 2:12There's no way that Rock could hit the first ball today.
- 2:16That was almost like a purpose pitch, as if to say, you're not going to get any toehold on me.
- 2:21Lomborg delivers now, and here's the pitch. And it's a strike ball. The slider caught the outside corner of Rock, shotting up as if to bump.
- 2:30And I think Lomborg led the American League in hitting batters.
- 2:36He did with 19. Here's the pitch on the way. Way outside. And the count. Two balls and a strike. Howard.
- 2:43Lomborg has experience behind the plate today in Elston Howard, a veteran of a number of World Series with the Yankees.
- 2:52Two balls and a strike. Nobody on, nobody out. The game has just started. The pitch.
- 2:57And he looks like to, boy, he blew that ball by him.
- 3:01A lightning fastball at the knees that time. Rock had a good cut in this. And the count is evened up.
- 3:08Two balls, two strikes. Rock strikes out quite a bit, 109 times during the regular season.
- 3:17But he does a lot of everything. A lot of hits, a lot of runs, a lot of stolen bases.
- 3:22Two balls, two strikes. The pitch to the left-hand batter. Line drive. Right to the shot stop.
- 3:28Rock lined up to cut the fairway.
- 3:32So that's one away and he almost had himself another hit, did he?
- 3:35Yes he did, Harry. And you're talking about that first pitch to Mr. Brock.
- 3:41The purpose pitch. Lomborg says when he became a real good pitcher this year, Sal Magley, the pitching coach of the Red Sox,
- 3:49he was the first pitcher to come inside with a fastball. Make those hitters respect you.
- 3:53Here now is Kirk Flood. And the first pitch is a curveball. He's too short and up his hips a butt and took it outside.
- 3:58One ball, no strikes. One out and nobody on. The ball game has just started.
- 4:02Second game in the World Series at Sunway Park, Boston. Here's the pitch by Lomborg.
- 4:07Swung, round ball to the third base and fumbles it. Picks it up. Fumbles it around, picks it up, throws.
- 4:12Still gets him at first base.
- 4:15Kirk Flood had again a bad start away from the play. As Dalton Jones fumbled the ball,
- 4:20reached for it, wasn't able to pick it up, reached for it again and then threw perfectly to George Scott
- 4:26and barely beat Kirk Flood for out number two.
- 4:31Well two up, two down. The Red Sox are already ahead of yesterday.
- 4:36And at this time yesterday Brock was at second base with one out.
- 4:40So here's Maryland, two out and nobody on base for the pitch. Curveball low and outside.
- 4:45One ball, no strikes.
- 4:48A hazy start of a day at Sunway today. Big crowd on hand.
- 4:53Seventy-five degree weather. Here's the pitch. High pop ball back and out of play.
- 4:58That evens it up with a ball and a strike. Two men are out. Nobody on base.
- 5:02Top half of the first inning, no score. Al Barley to play it on fire.
- 5:07Elston Howard talking to him at the moment. Joe Schultz coaching the third base.
- 5:12Dixit for the first base for the Red Berets. Jerry Adair is playing Marist way back on the grass.
- 5:17Back again right field. Here's the pitch on the way. He swings on a curve and he misses.
- 5:22He took something off on his curveball and he had Marist way out in flat.
- 5:26Real good pitch that time. Two strikes and a ball, two out.
- 5:31Top half of the first inning. Cepeda kneeling in the on-deck circle.
- 5:35Here's one bird. Popped up. Marist at the high pop fly. Adair backing out in the right field.
- 5:43Barnable coming in. Barnable makes the catch.
- 5:47At the last moment Adair got out of his way.
- 5:50Nothing across for the five men from the top and first.
- 5:54Top half of the first inning. St. Louis nothing. Red Sox nothing.
- 6:00Hi honey I'm home. Hi I'm upstairs I'll be down in a minute.
- 6:07Okay. How was your day? Oh yeah horrible.
- 6:11Yeah I like your job again huh? Yeah yeah.
- 6:14I was like a new super king-size Winston Big Red today. They're on the table in the hall.
- 6:19In the golden red pack? That's right great day.
- 6:22It's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 6:26Mmm took our son to the dentist today. What happened? Twenty new cavities.
- 6:31Ouch wowee. Mmm.
- 6:34Well I can't find them honey. Oh listen John maybe they're in the table on the other side of the living room.
- 6:42What's the table doing over there? What'd you do rearrange the furniture again?
- 6:46No John I always keep the table over there.
- 6:49John? Cynthia?
- 6:52Who is your Fred Reader you're in the wrong house again.
- 6:56It's the church, it's the church, it's the church.
- 7:00We're in town.
- 7:04This is Harry Carrey with Pee Wee Wee from Sunway Park Boston.
- 7:08We're going to the bottom half of the first inning no score.
- 7:10The Cardinals went down in order in their innings.
- 7:13You know our Lambert went to Stanford University obtained a BA degree in biology.
- 7:18I must say he dissected the Cardinal hitters in that first inning pretty well.
- 7:22Here's Tardyball left handed hitter the first pitch he bumped down the third base line foul.
- 7:27One strike and no ball.
- 7:29Nobody on and nobody out. We go into the bottom half of the first inning.
- 7:33Lead off man Jose Tardyball who hit.223 during the regular season.
- 7:37He used to be with Kansas City.
- 7:39Got no homers, can't eye the eyes.
- 7:42Very fast.
- 7:46He's from Cuba.
- 7:50Straddles up wide waiting.
- 7:53Out of pitch.
- 7:55Here's Tardyball.
- 7:5929 years old, 165 pounder.
- 8:03Stand 511 a little smaller than that.
- 8:06Two strikes no ball.
- 8:08Vic Hughes without a windup delivered.
- 8:10Fastball low and outside.
- 8:13Two strikes and a ball.
- 8:15I understand the Red Sox scouting report on Hughes indicated just an average fastball.
- 8:22Here's the pitch.
- 8:24Hung on high top fly right field Roger Maris coming in a few feet under the ball waiting.
- 8:29He's got us one gone.
- 8:31Tardyball fly to Maris and Wright.
- 8:33I was going to say to you either.
- 8:36If that's so the Red Sox might be surprised a little bit because this fellow's got better than an average fastball.
- 8:42I would think so.
- 8:44I think another thing we could watch for today Harry is that the third baser Mike Schaen,
- 8:49I think he has the reputation of not being a real good feeling third baser.
- 8:53They may try a few bunches and see how he looks down there.
- 8:57Here's Dalton Jones had one out of four yesterday.
- 9:00Left handed batter to pitch way outside.
- 9:02Dalton Jones hit 289 during the season.
- 9:06Had three homers.
- 9:07Drove in 25 runs.
- 9:09One out and nobody on the ball game bottom of the first no score.
- 9:12Dick Hughes pitch.
- 9:14He had a good cut and he fouled it back.
- 9:16And the count is even at a ball and a strike.
- 9:18Yeah it was indicated yesterday and again today that these Red Sox hitters,
- 9:23they didn't have too much success perhaps yesterday but there's nothing tight about them.
- 9:27They're swinging that bat.
- 9:29Jones just had a real good cut.
- 9:31He's got a pitch on the way.
- 9:33He swings and misses strike two.
- 9:35Two strikes and a ball.
- 9:37One man out.
- 9:39You see teams in the World Series sometimes and their hitters are quite obviously tight.
- 9:43They're not getting their normal swing.
- 9:45That's not true of the Red Sox at all.
- 9:47They're getting their cut.
- 9:48Here's the pitch.
- 9:49He foul-tips it in and again he had a real good swing of the slider.
- 9:53In on him.
- 9:54The count, two strikes and a ball, one out.
- 9:56Nobody on.
- 9:57Bottom of the first.
- 9:59Nothing ever changes.
- 10:01Orlando Cepeda who always converses with anybody within reach around first base during the regular season
- 10:06is doing likewise with the Empire today.
- 10:08Here's a pitch low.
- 10:09He's talking with Frank Umont down there.
- 10:13Orlando, a very gregarious friendly soul, loves to chatter.
- 10:19Reminds you a little bit in that respect of Yogi Berra.
- 10:23Two-two pitch on the way.
- 10:24Here it is to Jones.
- 10:25He foul-tipped the curveball back.
- 10:28Again he had a good cut.
- 10:30And the count stays even.
- 10:32Bobby Dore coaching at first base.
- 10:34Ed Popowski at third base.
- 10:37The outfield for the Cardinals straight away a beautiful afternoon.
- 10:41At Fenway Park, Boston, second game of the 1967 World Series.
- 10:46Cardinals leading one game to oh, here's the pitch to Jones.
- 10:50Foul back.
- 10:52And the count stays.
- 10:53Two balls, two strikes.
- 10:57I don't know whether that got our colleagues on the television side or not.
- 11:02Kurt Gowdy and Ken Coleman.
- 11:05The foul ball was headed in that direction.
- 11:08Cardinals went down an order in their first inning.
- 11:10First man up here for the Red Sox, light out.
- 11:12Dalton Jones is the batter.
- 11:16Two balls, two strikes.
- 11:17On the left-hand hitter, here's the pitch.
- 11:19He struck him out swinging.
- 11:22He just blew that ball by it.
- 11:24And Dalton Jones goes down swinging.
- 11:27That's two out.
- 11:28Listen to the hand for Carl Yastremski.
- 11:38Carl Yastremski who did it all this past season.
- 11:41Just a tremendously fabulous perfect ball player.
- 11:45Two men are out.
- 11:47You know a lot of baseball people compare Yastremski right now.
- 11:50Here's the pitch to him.
- 11:52And it's a slider high to Stan Huseel in his prime.
- 11:56He's the same type of ball player, does everything so well,
- 12:00and maybe even hits with a little more power.
- 12:03Here's a pitch on the way.
- 12:05Slow curve outside.
- 12:07Two balls, no strikes.
- 12:09I don't believe Gibson at any time yesterday threw any off-speed pitch to Yastremski.
- 12:13It was all fast stuff.
- 12:15And Hughes surprised me on that pitch.
- 12:18Because his change is not one of his better pitches.
- 12:21But he did dare throw it to Yastremski, but it was high.
- 12:24Two balls, no strikes.
- 12:26No pitch.
- 12:27There's a drive, it would stay spare, it would be gone.
- 12:30Fall ball.
- 12:32Yastremski got out in front.
- 12:34Hit that ball a mile, but foul.
- 12:36And that brought a roar from the crowd.
- 12:39Two balls and a strike.
- 12:42Harry, I don't know what that pitch was,
- 12:44but I don't think you better throw it anymore.
- 12:47Whatever it was, you should throw it away, huh?
- 12:50Here it is now.
- 12:52Two balls and a strike, low and inside.
- 12:54Three balls, one strike on the left-hand hitter, Yastremski.
- 12:58Two men are out in the bottom of the first, no score.
- 13:00The Cardinals got out in front first yesterday.
- 13:03The Red Sox tied it.
- 13:05The Cardinals then won it in the seventh.
- 13:09Let's see how it'll go today.
- 13:11Three balls and a strike.
- 13:12Two out and nobody on.
- 13:13Hughes gets set.
- 13:16Dick was hit for 22 home runs during the National League season.
- 13:20Jim Lombard pitching for the Red Sox was touched for 23 home runs
- 13:25during the regular season.
- 13:27So he's liable to see a long ball or two today.
- 13:30Three balls and a strike on Yastremski who holds that bat high.
- 13:34Here's the pitch.
- 13:36He had a quantity miss.
- 13:38Did you hear the reaction of the crowd?
- 13:40That's when you've arrived as a star.
- 13:42When when you swing and miss, you get the same kind of a reaction.
- 13:45A very audible one as you do when you hit one out of the ballpark.
- 13:51That's what you call the tribute to greatness.
- 13:55Three balls, two strikes.
- 13:57Only fellows like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams,
- 14:05Willie Mays, those are the guys that the crowd when they swing and miss
- 14:11react as much as when they hit the ball out of the ballpark.
- 14:14Three balls, two strikes, two out.
- 14:17Yastremski up there.
- 14:19No score.
- 14:20Bottom of the first.
- 14:22Dick Hughes against Jim Lombard.
- 14:24Here's the pitch.
- 14:26It hits his bat and goes foul.
- 14:28He didn't mean to swing.
- 14:29He had started.
- 14:30The pitch was bad.
- 14:31Low it in.
- 14:32Inside it hit his bat and went foul.
- 14:34Three balls, two strikes.
- 14:36Yastremski was hit like yesterday, you know, against Gibson.
- 14:40He was 0 for 4.
- 14:43Playing in his first World Series.
- 14:46Now the sign.
- 14:48Three balls, two strikes.
- 14:50Hughes' pitch.
- 14:52He foul-tipped it back and what a riffle he had.
- 14:59Yastremski went around with everything on that pitch but foul it up.
- 15:05A handsome young man.
- 15:08Went to Notre Dame, you know.
- 15:11Three balls, two strikes.
- 15:14Now the signal.
- 15:17Dick Hughes gets set.
- 15:19Shakes off two sides with his glove.
- 15:21Yastremski gets out of the batter's box.
- 15:24Sometimes they're really shaking the pitch off and other times they're just trying to psych the hitter.
- 15:31To make him wonder what in the world does he want to throw to me.
- 15:35Three balls, two strikes.
- 15:38The pitch by Hughes.
- 15:39Again he shakes it off with his glove.
- 15:42Hughes usually pitches much more quickly.
- 15:46This too might be attributed to Yastremski.
- 15:50Dick Hughes ordinarily is one of the quickest workers in baseball.
- 15:54He and Gibson are almost identical.
- 15:57With the speed with which they throw.
- 15:59D.W. I know you want to comment but I don't want to miss this pitch.
- 16:02Here it is.
- 16:03Three, two.
- 16:04Ball four.
- 16:05He wants it.
- 16:06I was sitting here watching Tim McCarver and I think they were playing a game with Yastremski.
- 16:13They were trying to make him wait and upset him.
- 16:15McCarver would wiggle his glove and Dick Hughes would wiggle his glove.
- 16:20I think they knew what they wanted to throw him but as you said they just wanted to try to needle him a little bit.
- 16:26And Yastremski kept backing out of there.
- 16:28Well that brings up George Scott now.
- 16:31He was a good hitter yesterday with two out of three.
- 16:33He was a fine hitter during the regular season with a 3-0-3 average.
- 16:3719 homers.
- 16:38Yastremski lead the throw over.
- 16:40He's back standing up.
- 16:42George Scott.
- 16:4419 homers, 82 runs batted in.
- 16:46Look at the lead by Yastremski.
- 16:47Quick throw but he's back.
- 16:49Throws a little high.
- 16:52Yastremski.
- 16:54A running start off first base.
- 16:56Here's Hughes' pitch.
- 16:58Scott takes a fastball low.
- 17:00One ball, no strikes.
- 17:02Two men are out.
- 17:03A runner at first base.
- 17:04The first base runner of the ballgame.
- 17:06We're in the bottom of the first inning at Fenway Point.
- 17:08The second game of the World Series.
- 17:12The action shifts to St. Louis Saturday afternoon.
- 17:16Here's the stretch.
- 17:17The pitch.
- 17:18He had a cut and he missed.
- 17:21One ball, one strike.
- 17:23Two men are out.
- 17:27You can tell the way these Red Sox hitters swing that bat why.
- 17:31They score a lot of runs.
- 17:34Why they did during the American League season.
- 17:37Here's the stretch.
- 17:38The pitch.
- 17:39Kerr ball is high.
- 17:41And the count.
- 17:42Two balls and a strike.
- 17:44Dick Hughes appearing in his first World Series game.
- 17:48After a checkered minor league career, all of a sudden, here he is.
- 17:55The stretch pitch.
- 17:57A little bit wide.
- 17:59Two men at ball three.
- 18:01Three balls and a strike.
- 18:06Dick Hughes, born at Stevens, Arkansas, lives around Shreveport.
- 18:14Scoreless game.
- 18:16Yes, Stremski, the only base runner so far with a walk is at first base.
- 18:20Three balls, one strike on George Scott.
- 18:23Big right-handed batter.
- 18:25Here's the pitch.
- 18:26Strike two, Kerr.
- 18:28So now, yes, Stremski will be going with the pitch.
- 18:33Dick Hughes' career started in towns like Keokuk, Winnipeg, Winston-Salem,
- 18:39Tulsa, Portland, Atlanta, Yark.
- 18:42Here's the stretch.
- 18:44The pitch.
- 18:45There goes a runner, swung and fouled by.
- 18:48And the count remains three and two.
- 18:50I mentioned Yark, Jacksonville, Toledo.
- 18:55And finally, the tail end of last season, he came up with the Cardinals.
- 18:59And now here he is, pitching in the World Series after his first full year in the National League.
- 19:05Three balls, two strikes.
- 19:06Yes, Stremski will be going.
- 19:08And the pitch.
- 19:09There he goes.
- 19:10He struck him off.
- 19:13A slider.
- 19:14And Scott went down swinging.
- 19:16No runs, no hits, no errors, one left.
- 19:18At the end of one inning, St. Louis nothing, Boston nothing.
- 19:23When this World Series is over, can winter be far behind?
- 19:27No, it won't be long now before your car has to battle ice and snow.
- 19:31So why not get it into shape for the offseason now with snow tires from B.F. Goodrich?
- 19:36They're built tough to drive one through the tightest defense winter can muster.
- 19:41BFG TrailMaker Silvertown snow tires have a husky modern tread that really digs in,
- 19:47takes offshore and stops just as surely.
- 19:50TrailMaker's deep biting edges pull you through.
- 19:53Tough four-ply nylon cord construction means more safe driving miles.
- 19:58And TrailMakers never shout their own praises.
- 20:01They run quiet on wet or dry roads.
- 20:04Steel safety studs, sure, if you want them.
- 20:07So get on down to your BF Goodrich dealer and get your car decked out for winter driving.
- 20:13Open a BFG Choice Charge account and you won't have to plunk a penny down.
- 20:18BF Goodrich TrailMaker Silvertown snow tires only at your BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 20:33We go into the top of the second.
- 20:36The Red Sox have had the only base runner with two out Yostremski Wap,
- 20:40but George Scott fanned on a 3-2 pitch.
- 20:43So Hughes has struck out two in his first inning,
- 20:46as did Bob Gibson, two in his first inning yesterday.
- 20:49The commissioner of baseball, William D. Eckert,
- 20:54entertaining a war hero here today.
- 20:56Here's Orlando Cepeda, Lomborg's first pitch, curveballed outside and high.
- 21:01Cepeda hit list yesterday, batted 325 during the regular season,
- 21:0625 home runs, 111 runs batted in.
- 21:11Led the league in that RBI.
- 21:14They play Cepeda straight away and deep.
- 21:16He hits the ball to all fields with power.
- 21:18Here's the pitch.
- 21:20Chug at a fastball and he missed.
- 21:22Lomborg jammed them.
- 21:23That's where pitchers try to pitch Cepeda.
- 21:26But you better have plenty of mustard on that fastball, high and tight.
- 21:32If it isn't a real good fastball, you'll hit it out of sight.
- 21:36One ball, one strike.
- 21:37Cepeda leading off.
- 21:38Here's the pitch.
- 21:40There's a high pop fly in the left field.
- 21:45Yastremski under the ball and he's got it.
- 21:49Cepeda hit a high, towering but short fly ball to left field.
- 21:54And Yastremski caught it handily.
- 21:58That wind, Pee Wee, might be even stronger than we suspect from the way that ball acted.
- 22:04Well, it's a very tough play.
- 22:05The infield has had to really watch the ball, especially around the stands over here.
- 22:09It really comes back in and you have to stay right with it all the way.
- 22:15Here's Tim McCarver, the pride of Memphis, Tennessee.
- 22:19One out of nobody on McCarver hit those yesterday with nothing out of three.
- 22:24Lomborg getting set.
- 22:26Into the windup he goes, the pitch on the way to the left hand hitter,
- 22:30and he started to swing, held up a curveball low.
- 22:33One ball, no strikes.
- 22:35McCarver, who never alibis, but just in discussion,
- 22:40was saying that he had difficulty picking the ball up at the plate yesterday.
- 22:45That somehow he just couldn't quite see the ball.
- 22:50One ball, no strike.
- 22:51Here's the pitch.
- 22:52And it's high outside, ball two.
- 22:54I like this Lomborg's fluid pitching motion.
- 22:58He's really loose out there and has an effortless way of handling himself.
- 23:06Two balls, no strikes.
- 23:07One out of nobody on McCarver, the hitter.
- 23:09No score when the top of the second with one out.
- 23:12The pitch on the way.
- 23:14Ground ball to the first baseman, Scott.
- 23:16He's got it.
- 23:17The pitch is going to cover.
- 23:18He's out from Scott, the Lomborg.
- 23:23He had an example there of McCarver going down the line.
- 23:26Probably one of the fastest running catchers in baseball.
- 23:29It's rare when a catcher can run.
- 23:31McCarver has better than average speed, even though he is a catcher.
- 23:35Here's Mike Shannon.
- 23:36He had two hits yesterday.
- 23:38Lomborg has retired the first five men that he has faced.
- 23:42And there is no score.
- 23:44There's been only one baserunner.
- 23:46That was just Strumsky on a walk.
- 23:48Here's the pitch.
- 23:49Shannon started to swing out up.
- 23:51Curveball caught the corner.
- 23:53And he looks back to talk to Al Barlich.
- 23:56Al Barlich, the dean of National League umpires.
- 24:04Now to wind up the pitch.
- 24:06It's a curve at Dandy's.
- 24:07Strike two.
- 24:08And boy, he snapped one out that time.
- 24:10Lomborg with a good, sharp, overhanded curveball.
- 24:14And he's ahead of Shannon, two strikes, no ball.
- 24:17Two out.
- 24:18Nobody on base.
- 24:19Javier would be next.
- 24:21Lomborg gets set.
- 24:22The pitch on the way.
- 24:23Here it is.
- 24:24Sidearm swung.
- 24:25Bouncing ball to Dalton Jones, but is foul.
- 24:28Fields it behind the bag on the foul side.
- 24:32They're two men out.
- 24:34The Cardinals so far have had no hits and no runs.
- 24:37The Red Sox so far have had no hits and no runs.
- 24:40The Red Sox have had one man reach base on a pass.
- 24:44That's the whole story in a nutshell, as it were.
- 24:47On a balmy day at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 24:51There's no way you can have this kind of weather in Boston at this time of year.
- 24:55All the riders from all over the country.
- 24:58Here's the pitch on the way.
- 25:00Shannon's.
- 25:01Hooked him out.
- 25:02Had a cut and missed.
- 25:04Shannon goes down the swing.
- 25:06One, two, three, nothing across.
- 25:08And the end of an inning and a half.
- 25:10St. Louis nothing.
- 25:11Boston nothing.
- 25:13Now, Romeo said, Julie, baby, our little compact is a bust.
- 25:26I've been down to see the Dodge boys.
- 25:30They got a man size dart for us.
- 25:33Dart give a fever.
- 25:35Dodge fever.
- 25:36Where's that sleek shape?
- 25:38Fever that's got everyone.
- 25:40Fever.
- 25:42You're gonna love it.
- 25:44That's why Dad is number one.
- 25:46You get the fever.
- 25:48Dodge fever.
- 25:50You get the fever.

- 26:19We go to the bottom of the second and Reggie Smith will lead it off.
- 26:24Reggie had one on a three yesterday, laid out a hit.
- 26:27Eighty-four degrees.
- 26:29Tony Kubik informs me.
- 26:32As he takes his jacket off.
- 26:37Here's the pitch to left-hand hitting Reggie Smith, a curveball outside.
- 26:41I started to mention riders from all over who are covering the series.
- 26:44Naturally expected cool weather in Boston.
- 26:47All have heavy clothes.
- 26:49Yours truly included.
- 26:50The pitch swings and he misses.
- 26:52But we have had perfect midsummer type weather at Fenway Park these two days.
- 27:00One ball, one strike.
- 27:01Reggie Smith who hit.246 during the regular season.
- 27:04Left-handed batter with great speed.
- 27:07Dick Hughes is set for delivery now.
- 27:09He had a cut and he missed.
- 27:12Two strikes and a ball.
- 27:14Bob Gibson, fan ten yesterday for the card.
- 27:18Dick Hughes looks down.
- 27:21He wears glasses.
- 27:23He has his sign.
- 27:25Now the pitch.
- 27:26Here it is.
- 27:27High pop foul coming back.
- 27:29Here's McClark who might have a play.
- 27:31He's under the ball.
- 27:32He takes it.
- 27:33Reggie Smith fouls to McCarver.
- 27:36One away.
- 27:40And here comes Adair.
- 27:42Jerry Adair.
- 27:45The second baseman.
- 27:49An Oklahoma boy.
- 27:51A basketball star at Oklahoma State.
- 27:57Under our good friend Hank Iba.
- 28:01Right-handed batter, the pitch.
- 28:03Bouncing ball.
- 28:04Shannon to his right.
- 28:05Foul ball though.
- 28:07One strike and a ball.
- 28:09Adair hit.273 during the regular season.
- 28:13With three homers and 35 runs battered in.
- 28:15Hitless in four trips yesterday.
- 28:18Striking out two times.
- 28:20Right-handed hitter.
- 28:24Here's Hughes getting set.
- 28:26The pitch.
- 28:27There's a drive.
- 28:28Deep left field.
- 28:29Brock going back.
- 28:30He makes the catch.
- 28:34Through Brock leaps high against the left field wall.
- 28:38And between Yastremski and Brock,
- 28:41you wonder what you have to do to get a base hit in left field.
- 28:44A great play robbing Adair of extra bases.
- 28:47He cleans up the ballpark after we're through here.
- 28:52Two-man run.
- 28:53And here's Rico Petracelli.
- 28:56The shortstop.
- 28:57Right-hand hitter.
- 28:58Swings.
- 28:59Back and out of play.
- 29:01One strike and no ball.
- 29:03Brock went right to the base of the green monster that time.
- 29:07To the left of the scoreboard.
- 29:09Leaped high and came down with that ball.
- 29:13Two-meter out.
- 29:15Here's the pitch.
- 29:17Fastball high inside.
- 29:18I guess he said as he threw the ball back to the infield,
- 29:21Pee-wee.
- 29:22There you are, Yaz.
- 29:23You're not the only guy who can do that.
- 29:27One ball, one strike.
- 29:29Two out, nobody on.
- 29:31Petracelli the hitter.
- 29:32The delivery.
- 29:33Curveball in there of beauty at the knees.
- 29:36There's every hitter's all-American weakness.
- 29:39That sharp-breaking curveball on the outside corner at the knees.
- 29:45Two strikes and the ball.
- 29:46The pitch.
- 29:48Just barely missed that same corner with the same kind of a curveball.
- 29:53And the count evens on Petracelli.
- 29:56He hit.259 during the regular season with 17 homers.
- 30:03Swirl of dust causes the game to be delayed for a moment.
- 30:07Petracelli steps back into the batter's box.
- 30:10Neither team has had a hit in this ballgame yet.
- 30:13No hits, no runs.
- 30:14The pitch.
- 30:15High fastball.
- 30:16Ball three.
- 30:17That's the third hitter that Hughes has had a full count on.
- 30:19One he won't be a strumsky.
- 30:22The other one, Scottie struck out.
- 30:24Let's see what he's going to do with Petracelli.
- 30:27Two men around, nobody on base.
- 30:30Hughes gets set.
- 30:31Shakes off a sign with his glove.
- 30:33Here's the pitch.
- 30:35There's a line drive.
- 30:36They hit.
- 30:37Petracelli laying the single pass down and who dove in vain for that ball.
- 30:44So Petracelli is on with a solid single in the left field.
- 30:48And Tim McCarver goes out to talk to you.
- 30:54As I mentioned, the first hit of the ballgame.
- 30:57A line single.
- 30:58Mike Shannon left his feet in a headlong dive but couldn't reach it.
- 31:02Harry talking about Tony Kubek.
- 31:04Tony Kubek and I were standing back here yesterday after the game was over.
- 31:08No hurry to go anyplace.
- 31:09And we saw something we'd never seen before.
- 31:11The Red Sox came out after everyone had gone and took batting practice.
- 31:16And Rico Petracelli was one of them.
- 31:18And I said Rico, did you learn anything?
- 31:21Yes, he said, yes I did.
- 31:22I think my stance was too much close.
- 31:25I'll open up.
- 31:26I think I'll get some hits today.
- 31:27Well he did.
- 31:28Here's Elston Howard.
- 31:29First pitch.
- 31:30One on.
- 31:31Fly ball deep center.
- 31:32Under the ball.
- 31:33Flood.
- 31:34He's going to get it near the track.
- 31:35He's got it.
- 31:36And that retires inside.
- 31:37Elston Howard on the first pitch hit a towering fly ball.
- 31:40No runs, one hit, no errors, one left.
- 31:42At the end of two innings the score, St. Louis nothing, Boston.
- 31:45Nothing.
- 31:46Hi, this is Malcolm Meany.
- 31:48Maybe you don't recognize my name, but you know my face right away.
- 31:52I always play the bad guys in the movies.
- 31:55I had this real heavy beard, I looked mean as anything.
- 31:59Whenever I came on the screen people always said, hey, what's that guy's name again?
- 32:04Well his name was Malcolm Meany because that was me.
- 32:07And right now I, Malcolm Meany, would like to register a complaint against the Gillette Razor Company.
- 32:15They came out with their super stainless blade, the spoiler, and I've been out of work ever since.
- 32:21You see that blade has a miracle plastic coating on the edge that reduces the pull when you shave.
- 32:28So I tried the spoiler and I got to like it so much I would shave all the time.
- 32:33And I became clean shaven.
- 32:36Well you can't be a bad guy if you're clean shaven.
- 32:39I'm not the type to be a good guy.
- 32:42So I've been out of work for a long time.
- 32:45Of course my private life is picked up by and get a lot of girls.
- 32:49I never got girls before.
- 32:51But where can you take your girl when you've got no money?
- 32:58While we're going to the top half, the third inning of the small game here at Fenway Park,
- 33:02Harry Carrey and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you to the second game of the World Series.
- 33:06No score in this ball game, the top half, the third.
- 33:08Come on in Harry.
- 33:10Alright here's Juli Javier who had two out of four yesterday.
- 33:14Hit 281 during a regular season.
- 33:19Very fast, can hit the ball with power.
- 33:25Now wind up by Lon Borg and here's the pitch.
- 33:28There's the ground ball and it's short.
- 33:29Petrocelli up.
- 33:30There's the peg.
- 33:31He should get him.
- 33:32He does.
- 33:33He's got a great arm.
- 33:35Petrocelli throws out how he won.
- 33:37One away and another bring up down, Maxville.
- 33:40And Jim Lon Borg continues to pitch perfectly.
- 33:43He is retired, seven in a row.
- 33:47Here's Maxville.
- 33:48Hit less than two tries yesterday, walked twice.
- 33:52Hit 227 during the regular season.
- 33:55One man out, nobody on base.
- 33:57We're in the third.
- 33:58No score.
- 33:59The pitch by Lon Borg, here it is.
- 34:01Line drive to Scott.
- 34:04Maxville lying to the first baseman, Scott.
- 34:07And there's two away.
- 34:08They've been two balls hit.
- 34:11Rather well, Maxville's that time and Brock leading off line to Petrocelli.
- 34:18So here's Dick Hughes.
- 34:20Now during the regular season, Hughes likes to bundle up.
- 34:23He's a pretty good bunner.
- 34:25And he's not really the softest touch in the world as a hitter for a pitcher.
- 34:30He can sting you here and there.
- 34:34Lon Borg is retired, eight men in a row.
- 34:37Here's Dick Hughes.
- 34:40The Boston right-hander has his sign and a pitch.
- 34:44Swings and he fouls it back.
- 34:46One strike, no ball.
- 34:48Hughes works very quickly and so does Lon Borg.
- 34:52We had a two-hour, 22-minute ball game yesterday and the way this one's rolling along
- 35:01might be even quicker today.
- 35:03Here's the pitch.
- 35:04And it's a strike-two call.
- 35:07Over the inside corner, just below the letters.
- 35:11Two men are out, nobody on base.
- 35:13The outfield plays Hughes very shallow and right.
- 35:17Medium in the other two fields.
- 35:19The pitch.
- 35:20He's struck it out.
- 35:22Sidearm curve.
- 35:24And it's one, two, three again.
- 35:26Nothing in front.
- 35:27At the end of two and a half innings, the cardinals nothing, the Red Sox nothing.
- 35:38Well, how about that?
- 35:40Well, how about what?
- 35:41I forgot my cigarettes.
- 35:43Oh, yeah?
- 35:44Tell you what.
- 35:45Then try one of mine.
- 35:47Try one of yours?
- 35:48Try one of mine.
- 35:50Have a Salem.
- 35:51I think I will.
- 36:21Drive on a mine.
- 36:22Turn to Salem, turn to Salem.
- 36:24For a take that springtime press.
- 36:33Fenway Park.
- 36:34Harry Caron on Pee-wee Reese.
- 36:35We're bottom half to third of the league.
- 36:36No score in this ball game.
- 36:37Jim Lombard, the pitcher, the first hitter.
- 36:38And he's not a bad guy.
- 36:39Oh, I'm sorry.
- 36:40I'm sorry, Jim.
- 36:41I'm sorry.
- 36:42Good one.
- 36:43You did a good job.
- 36:44the bottom half to third at no
- 36:46score in this ball game.
- 36:47Jim Lombard the pitcher the
- 36:49first hitter and he's not a bad
- 36:51hitter either.
- 36:53I know he he can swing that
- 36:54bad.
- 36:55He's helped himself in a number
- 36:56of occasions.
- 36:57Peewee and he leads it off here
- 36:58in the third inning.
- 36:59And remember the game that won
- 37:01the pennant for the Red Sox.
- 37:02It was Lombard who started it
- 37:04all with a safe but he swings
- 37:06and he misses the first pitch
- 37:07strike one.
- 37:08Shannon the cardinal third
- 37:11baseman is playing even with the
- 37:13bag one strike no ball the pitch
- 37:16fastball a little bit low and the
- 37:18count is even and a ball on the
- 37:20strike.
- 37:20The sun has gone hiding behind
- 37:23the cloud at the moment one ball
- 37:25one strike.
- 37:28Here's a pitch by you.
- 37:29He swings and misses a fastball
- 37:32strike to Maris is playing
- 37:34medium right there.
- 37:36Flood shades him over towards
- 37:37right.
- 37:38Brock is far across in left
- 37:40center.
- 37:40He's got a little bit of a
- 37:42chance to get a strike.
- 37:45Now the signal two strikes and a
- 37:47ball on the right handed batter
- 37:48the pitch.
- 37:49He struck him out swinging
- 37:52Lombard becomes the third
- 37:53strikeout victim for Dick Hughes
- 37:56and boys we got a pitching deal
- 37:57going on here today between two
- 38:01young men appearing in the first
- 38:03World Series game.
- 38:04Twenty four year old Jim
- 38:05Lombard twenty nine year old
- 38:08Lombard is a fastball on the
- 38:10right hand side.
- 38:11He's got a little bit of a
- 38:12chance to get a strike.
- 38:15Right off the right his first
- 38:16time up good speed left handed
- 38:18batter Shannon plays him shallow
- 38:21the pitch.
- 38:22It's a curve in there a strike
- 38:23is called one strike and no ball
- 38:26a capacity crowd of course you
- 38:29can get it just about thirty
- 38:30five thousand into this ball
- 38:32park.
- 38:34That's about what they have now
- 38:35the pitch and it's a fastball
- 38:38one out nobody on bottom of the
- 38:40third has been only one hit in
- 38:42the ball game a single by Rico
- 38:44Petrus selling the Red Sox
- 38:47shortstop now the pitch here it
- 38:50is fastball outside Hughes has
- 38:54been moving the ball around on
- 38:56targetable Jose Tartabal T.R.
- 39:00T.A. B.U.L.L.
- 39:05Hughes gets that here's the
- 39:06pitch he struck out on a change
- 39:09of pitch Tartabal becomes the
- 39:12fourth strikeout victim and so
- 39:16there is Don Jones coming up he
- 39:18found his first time there's two
- 39:20out nobody on just checking
- 39:24Peewee.
- 39:24Yes.
- 39:25Trimsky is yet to come to bat
- 39:26with a man on base in this World
- 39:28Series.
- 39:29Each time he was up yesterday
- 39:30the bases were empty.
- 39:33I'll take that back.
- 39:34He came up with a man on on the
- 39:35sixth.
- 39:36Here's a slow curve in there to
- 39:37Dalton Jones for a strike call
- 39:41Dick Hughes suddenly has gone to
- 39:43off speed pitches here in the
- 39:44third inning two men are out
- 39:46nobody on base no score the
- 39:48pitch swung on high pop foul
- 39:51over to the stands so pay the
- 39:53coming over but it's out of
- 39:55play behind the commissioners
- 39:58backs few rows back and so the
- 40:03count two strikes and nothing on
- 40:05Dalton Jones the Red Sox third
- 40:08base left handed batter good
- 40:13hitters fellow born in McCall
- 40:18Mississippi.

- 43:11second baseman Jerry out there
- 43:14and I was part flood one out
- 43:16landborg has an a lot of base
- 43:18runner the pitch to the
- 43:20right handed batter curve ball
- 43:21outside he's short in the bun
- 43:23one ball no strikes one out no
- 43:26score top of the fourth hurt
- 43:29flood the hitter Roger Maris
- 43:32would be next landborg working
- 43:34on a perfect game.
- 43:36He's retired 10 in a row.
- 43:40Now to wind up the pitch.
- 43:42He had a cut and he missed the
- 43:44fastball that even to the ball
- 43:47and a strike.
- 43:49I'm sure you all recall that
- 43:50there was once a perfect game
- 43:53pitched in World Series
- 43:54competition probably the most
- 43:57unbelievable feed of all.
- 43:59Here's the pitch high and
- 44:00inside for a pitcher to retire
- 44:03twenty seven men in a row
- 44:04without anybody reaching base.
- 44:07The odds against that happening
- 44:08must be something like 18
- 44:12zillion to one.
- 44:15Don Larson did it.
- 44:17Here's the pitch.
- 44:18Ground ball hit it for left
- 44:19field.
- 44:19Here's the pitch.
- 44:21Petruchelli up for the ball
- 44:22throwing it's going to be close
- 44:25argument.
- 44:26First.
- 44:29Petruchelli went to his right
- 44:31came up with a ball fire and
- 44:33just got first base on a post
- 44:35call.
- 44:36Frank Yuman.
- 44:39Here's the first beat for the
- 44:40ball game from Kirk Flood who
- 44:43now trots across to the cardinal
- 44:45dugout Petruchelli a fine play
- 44:48on the throw and he had to have
- 44:50something on it.
- 44:53Or there would have been no
- 44:53chance.
- 44:54Here's Maris.
- 44:56The.
- 44:57Curve.
- 45:00Or learn more.
- 45:02Is just as sharp as a man can be
- 45:04hitting the corners keeping the
- 45:06ball down as command of his
- 45:08fastball as well as his breaking
- 45:10ball.
- 45:12Let off that time low.
- 45:15And the count.
- 45:16Maris.
- 45:18One ball one strike two men are
- 45:20out.
- 45:20The cardinals haven't had a
- 45:21baserunner.
- 45:24The Red Sox have had only one
- 45:25hit.
- 45:27No score in the top of the
- 45:29fourth.
- 45:29Here's the pitch to Maris.
- 45:31Fastball low.
- 45:33And the count two balls in a
- 45:35strut.
- 45:36Roger Maris who drove in both
- 45:37runs yesterday in the cardinals
- 45:39two to one.
- 45:40The Red Sox have had a victory
- 45:45over the Red Sox.
- 45:50Roger straddles the plate swings
- 45:52that batter on.
- 45:54A home run threat.
- 45:56The pitch.
- 45:58Low inside.
- 45:59All three.
- 46:01And they're on board for the
- 46:02first time is in danger of
- 46:04losing a man.
- 46:06Three balls one strike two out
- 46:08nobody on base.
- 46:09And the crowd here at Fenway
- 46:11Park.
- 46:12Jim Lombard.
- 46:13Three balls and a strike.
- 46:15The big right hander delivers.
- 46:17High pop foul out of play.
- 46:20Into the stand.
- 46:22And that'll give you a tip off
- 46:23how fast Lombard is.
- 46:26With three and one Maris was
- 46:28swinging but he couldn't pull the
- 46:29trigger quite fast enough he got
- 46:31around late.
- 46:32On a fastball and fouled it into
- 46:34the third base stand.
- 46:35And the Red Sox.
- 46:39Three balls two strikes.
- 46:42No Cardinal has reached first
- 46:43base yet.
- 46:46So paid a weighty.
- 46:48He's in the on deck circle.
- 46:51Maris three balls two strikes.
- 46:53Lombard leaning forward.
- 46:55Here's the pitch.
- 46:58High pop flying in field.
- 47:00That'll be easy.
- 47:01Dalton Jones getting the ball
- 47:02up.
- 47:03Petrusali.
- 47:03You get under it.
- 47:06That has popped up.
- 47:08One two three.
- 47:10At the end.
- 47:11Three and a half it is that
- 47:12still Cardinals nothing.
- 47:13Red Sox.
- 47:14Nothing.
- 47:24Petrus partir Tony this badge
- 47:27with trifle.
- 47:28Was.
- 47:28Oh wait.
- 47:30Let's go down and leave the
- 47:32And treat it for a cold one that you get the fever, Dodge fever

- 48:10And don't forget to pick up your free copy of the Joe Gaggiela World Series score book at Participating Dealers
- 48:1735,188 today, slightly larger crowd than yesterday
- 48:29Here's Carl Yastrowski to lead it off in the bottom of the fourth, no score
- 48:34Dick Hughes gets set
- 48:37His uniform already drenched with perspiration
- 48:41It's a muggy day, here's a pitch
- 48:43He had a cut and he missed
- 48:45Does he ever unload when he swings that bad, Pee-wee?
- 48:50Yes he does, Harry
- 48:52And another thing, you're talking about the power of Yastrowski
- 48:55He may have a little more power than Stan Musial
- 48:58But up until this year, I think the most home runs he ever hit was 16
- 49:02He just acquired this power this year
- 49:05That's the way Stan was early in his career, he didn't hit many
- 49:08Here's the pitch, there it goes, way back
- 49:10It might be out of here
- 49:12It put me in there
- 49:14Oh, over
- 49:45Holy cow, did he pop that ball out of there
- 49:49Yastrowski a line drive, here's Scott
- 49:52Here's a bouncing ball, left-fist, face-in
- 49:55Scott signals to left
- 49:57And now the Red Sox getting to the cube
- 50:03Now Yastrowski, line one deep into the right field corner
- 50:07At about the 380 mark
- 50:10Now Scott signals to left
- 50:12And here's Reggie Smith
- 50:14This crowd came roaring to its feet
- 50:24Yastrowski has put the Red Sox on the scoreboard in the World Series
- 50:28Just as he did so many times during the regular season
- 50:32Reggie Smith with the runner at first, nobody out, Dick Hume
- 50:36The pitch, it's a fastball sinking low
- 50:43The Cardinal bullpen stirs
- 50:46Nobody's actually started to throw yet, but they're starting to move around
- 50:50Hughes, it's a muggy day
- 50:52Temperature 84 and it's humid
- 50:55Especially down on the field, and his uniform is soaked with perspiration
- 50:59A pitch to Smith, high-five ball, left-fail, rock going back, back
- 51:04Near that fence, he's got room, calling for the ball
- 51:07He takes it, here's Scott tagging up at first
- 51:10But Brock throws and almost overthrows everybody
- 51:13Threw the ball over Javier's head and Dick Hughes
- 51:16Halfway between first and second had a lead
- 51:20Brock with a strong arm, almost overly strong at that time
- 51:25But Scott was only decoying anyway
- 51:29So Smith is flying up
- 51:31Here's Jerry Adair
- 51:36He was robbed of an extra base hit on a leaping catch by Brock in the second inning
- 51:41Carl Jostremski's home run has given the Red Sox the lead
- 51:451-0
- 51:46Here's a throw to first Scott back
- 51:49Don't be surprised, the Red Sox have the momentum
- 51:53Jerry Adair can handle the bat
- 51:56Dick Williams, the manager of the Red Sox, may send George Scott
- 52:00To stretch the pitch
- 52:02A bouncing ball, got a chance to beat it out down the third base line
- 52:05Hughes with three, sling
- 52:09An infield hit for Jerry Adair
- 52:24So the Red Sox have runners at first and second
- 52:27Adair, top one, down the third base line
- 52:30Hughes made quite an effort
- 52:32Running over towards the line, picking the ball up on the run
- 52:35Running away from first base
- 52:37He had a leap in the air and throwing the other direction
- 52:40Bulls have paid off the bat
- 52:42Here's Petroseli
- 52:44He got the first hit of the afternoon
- 52:46A single in the second inning
- 52:50There have been three hits in this inning
- 52:52One run, a lead off homer by Jostremski
- 52:54The score one to nothing, Boston
- 53:00Here's the stretch, the pitch
- 53:02Petroseli takes a curve at the knee
- 53:05Larry Jaster, a left-hander for the Cardinals in the bullpen
- 53:08And Jack Lamaid, who used to be a member of the Red Sox
- 53:11Pitch bottom for two years, is out in the bullpen
- 53:16Runners at first and second with one out
- 53:20Petroseli the bat
- 53:22Jostremski let off the inning with a homer
- 53:25Here's the pitch
- 53:28He had a cut and he missed
- 53:30Swung in a bad ball up around his ad example
- 53:33And the count, two strikes
- 53:36Elston Howard would be next
- 53:38The Red Sox have taken the lead for the first time in the 1967 World Series
- 53:44They never led it any time yesterday, they were tied until the seventh
- 53:52Today they're the first to score
- 53:54Now the stretch, from the belt, here's the pitch
- 53:58High pump foul coming back
- 54:01No play on the screen
- 54:05And so it's two strikes and nothing, Enrico Petroseli
- 54:09Jerry Adair is at first base
- 54:13George Scott at second base, there's one out
- 54:16Jostremski has already circled the bases with his first homer of this World Series
- 54:21And what a belt it was
- 54:24A line drive, hit like a shot
- 54:27Two strikes, no ball
- 54:32Now the delivery, here it is
- 54:35Low outside
- 54:37Two strikes and a ball
- 54:39Jostremski's line drive
- 54:42He hit that one like Peewee hits the golf ball
- 54:45I'm glad you didn't say baseball
- 54:49I would have to be truthful, Peewee
- 54:53Two strikes and a ball, the pitch
- 54:56There's a high drive foul into the left field corner, out of play
- 55:03A powering one too
- 55:05So it's still two strikes and a ball
- 55:1235,188 made this afternoon
- 55:1634,796 yesterday
- 55:21Enrico Petroseli with the red signs, leading one to nothing
- 55:25Teammates at first and second, one out
- 55:28The count, two strikes and a ball on him
- 55:31Dick Hughes trying to pitch out of trouble
- 55:33Now the delivery, high pop foul coming back
- 55:37McCarter off at the mask, no play
- 55:39Onto the screen
- 55:41And the count stays the same, two strikes and a ball
- 55:48The action will switch to St. Louis
- 55:53The third, fourth and fifth game, if necessary, will be played in St. Louis Saturday, Sunday and Monday
- 56:00And then the sixth and seventh games, if necessary, in Boston
- 56:07Following Wednesday and Thursday
- 56:09Here's Petroseli
- 56:11Runners at first and second, one out
- 56:14The stretch, the pitch, he foul-tipped, had a good cut
- 56:18And he's still alive up there
- 56:22The pitch that Dostromsky lined into the stands
- 56:26Looked like it was a slider or fastball to the inside part of the play
- 56:33Two strikes and a ball
- 56:36One to nothing in favor of Boston
- 56:38We're in the fourth
- 56:40Petroseli wears a helmet with that ear flap on it
- 56:47Extra protection
- 56:49Now the signal, waiting
- 56:53Dick Hughes gets set
- 56:55Here's the pitch
- 56:57Low outside, that evens it up
- 57:00Two balls, two strikes
- 57:02Larry Jaster and Jack Lemabe are working out in the bullpen for St. Louis
- 57:06Jim Lombard has pitched perfect baseball for four innings
- 57:11He's retired 12 in a row
- 57:17Runners at first and second
- 57:19Right hand batter waits
- 57:21The 2-2 pitch off the stretch, here it is
- 57:24Foul back and he had a good cut
- 57:26Petroseli's a strong little fella
- 57:30He's small in size, but
- 57:33When you hit 17 home runs and drive in 66 runs
- 57:38You know you got some power
- 57:46Great call Petroseli
- 57:48Straddles the play
- 57:50Chokes up about an inch on the bat
- 57:52Two balls, two strikes
- 57:54Hughes pitch
- 57:56And here it is
- 57:58He struck him out swinging
- 58:00Chased a bad ball high and inside
- 58:03And that's the fifth strikeout
- 58:06For Hughes
- 58:08And here's
- 58:10Elston Howard
- 58:16Right out deep to center his first time up
- 58:18Right handed hitter
- 58:21Howard
- 58:23Straddles the play, waits
- 58:25The pitch
- 58:27Low curveball outside
- 58:29Elston was in
- 58:34Nine World Series with the Yankees
- 58:36And now
- 58:38In his 10th World Series as a member of the Boston Red Sox
- 58:42One ball to the left
- 58:44And 10th World Series as a member of the Boston Red Sox
- 58:48One ball, no strikes
- 58:50The stretch the pitch
- 58:52Hot shot on the ground
- 58:54Great play by Javier
- 58:56Throws the second
- 58:58He's out
- 59:00Sensational play
- 59:02Howard is robbed of a base hit
- 59:04And Javier's diving stop
- 59:06Gets up in time to throw
- 59:08To the shortstop for the fours
- 59:10And it's one run, three hits
- 59:12The score, Boston 1, St. Louis nothing
- 59:15Hello, my name is Timothy Timit
- 59:18And I had a terrible experience the other day
- 59:21I went to buy a pack of Joet Super Stainless blades
- 59:25With Miracle Plastic Coating on the edge
- 59:28So I asked the man for Joet Super Stainless
- 59:31And he said, they call it the spoiler
- 59:33They spent all our money to call it the spoiler
- 59:35Why don't you ask for the spoiler?
- 59:37Why do you come in here and ask for Joet Super Stainless?
- 59:40Did he scare me?
- 59:42I don't know whether to ask for the spoiler
- 59:45To come to another store from now on
- 59:50And then while you're at it
- 59:52Why not try a can of new Joet Foamy Shaving Grip?
- 59:55You know, Joet packs a mountain of smooth shaving comfort
- 59:58In every can of new Joet Foaming
- 1:00:01You get billows of creamy, rich foamy leather
- 1:00:04That really soaks deep down into your beard
- 1:00:07Keeps it soft and moist right through your shave
- 1:00:10So for a shave as close as this year's
- 1:00:13America League pennant race
- 1:00:15Remember, nobody makes a lather like Foamy
- 1:00:18So moist, so rich, so creamy
- 1:00:21Nobody makes a lather like Joet
- 1:00:28Well, boys, we had perhaps one of the greatest plays
- 1:00:31Ever pulled off in World Series competition
- 1:00:33With runners at first and second, Elston Howard
- 1:00:35Hit what seemed a sure single to center
- 1:00:38Javier reached the ball, diving on the grass in short center
- 1:00:42And while on his knee, threw just in time to Maxville
- 1:00:45For the force out, Peewee
- 1:00:47One of the finest plays I've ever seen
- 1:00:49And I didn't think he had a chance to get the ball
- 1:00:51The only way he did, I just thought he may be able to knock it down
- 1:00:54But after he came up with the ball, he still threw the man out
- 1:00:57Here's the pay to leading off for the Cardinals
- 1:00:59And the top of the fifth, first pitch and there's strike call
- 1:01:02The Red Sox have one run
- 1:01:04And the way Lomborg is pitching, it could be enough
- 1:01:07The Cardinals haven't had a base runner yet
- 1:01:09We're in the top of the fifth
- 1:01:11Pitch to Sepeda Swann, bouncing ball to Dalton Jones
- 1:01:14He's got it, he throws to first in time
- 1:01:17Sepeda is 0-4-6 now in this World Series
- 1:01:21One out and here's McCarver
- 1:01:24And that is 13 men in a row retired by Lomborg
- 1:01:28McCarver looking for his first hit of the series
- 1:01:32One out, we're in the fifth
- 1:01:35One to nothing in favor of the Red Sox
- 1:01:37A remarkable play by Julian Javier, the Cardinals' second baseman
- 1:01:43Prevented the Red Sox from maybe breaking the game wide open
- 1:01:47McCarver waits
- 1:01:52Here's the windup
- 1:01:57And the fifth
- 1:01:59Curveball strike off the corner
- 1:02:04One strike and no ball
- 1:02:06Lomborg is fanned too
- 1:02:09He hasn't allowed a man to reach base
- 1:02:14And the totals for the Cardinals really like this up on the board
- 1:02:17No runs, no hits, no errors
- 1:02:19Now the windup, the pitch
- 1:02:22A little tap, foul
- 1:02:25Strike two, McCarver didn't have a very good swing at that one
- 1:02:29It was an off-speed type of pitch that fooled him
- 1:02:32And the count, two strikes no ball
- 1:02:34One out, fifth inning
- 1:02:36One to nothing in favor of the Red Sox
- 1:02:38On Carl Jostromski's home run
- 1:02:43Mike Shannon will be up there next for the Cardinals
- 1:02:47We're in the top of the fifth
- 1:02:50Here's the fifth
- 1:02:52Foul out of play, McCarver was trying to go to the opposite field
- 1:02:57And the count, strike two, no ball
- 1:03:00One out, nobody on
- 1:03:02Top of the fifth
- 1:03:04One to nothing in favor of the Red Sox
- 1:03:08The second game of the World Series, here's the windup
- 1:03:11The pitch, and it's high and outside
- 1:03:15Two strikes and the ball
- 1:03:17The Red Sox trying to even up the series
- 1:03:22Jim Lombard, big good-looking right-hander
- 1:03:26A California boy from San Luis Obispo
- 1:03:31Two strikes and the ball
- 1:03:34Here's the pitch
- 1:03:37High, lazy, pop fly, left field, Jostromski coming over, he's got room
- 1:03:42And he makes the count
- 1:03:44McCarver pops to Jostromski in short left field
- 1:03:48Two gone
- 1:03:50And here's Mike Shannon
- 1:03:52He fanned his first time up on three sharp breaking curve balls
- 1:03:58Two men are out
- 1:04:00The score, one to nothing Red Sox
- 1:04:04A hot day in Boston
- 1:04:08Lombard
- 1:04:10He's very cool out there though
- 1:04:13Two to the pitch
- 1:04:15Shannon takes a curve strike ball
- 1:04:21And Mike hasn't seen anything but a bending ball yet against Lombard
- 1:04:27Whenever they find out that you can't hit something, they'll keep throwing it
- 1:04:31You proved that you can
- 1:04:33Here's the pitch
- 1:04:35A high, pop, foul, back
- 1:04:37High to play as Howard chases it, but it's in the stand
- 1:04:41No ball
- 1:04:43Lombard is forcing Shannon to give up, to give room at the plate
- 1:04:48Give way
- 1:04:50Falling away from him
- 1:04:53The Red Sox have one run, four hits, no errors in this ballgame
- 1:04:56And the Cardinals, nothing, nothing, nothing
- 1:04:59They haven't had a man reach base
- 1:05:01Jostromski's home run is the ballgame as of now
- 1:05:07That plus Lombard's perfect pitching
- 1:05:10Two men are out, nobody on base
- 1:05:14The pitch to Shannon
- 1:05:17He's struck them out
- 1:05:19A curve ball
- 1:05:21Shannon was ducking out of the way, but the ball was in there, it was strike three, ball
- 1:05:25One, two, three, nothing in front
- 1:05:27And at the end of four and a half innings, the score, Boston one, St. Louis nothing
- 1:05:33La la la la la la la la
- 1:05:37It's what's up front that counts
- 1:05:42La la la la la la la la
- 1:05:46And up front ahead of the filter
- 1:05:50La la la la la la la la la
- 1:05:53Only Winston has the good, good taste
- 1:05:57La la la la la la la
- 1:05:59That comes from filter blend
- 1:06:02Filter blend means fine tobacco for the best taste yet
- 1:06:08That's why Winston is America's largest selling cigarette
- 1:06:14Winston's out front because up front only Winston has filter blend
- 1:06:21Choice Golden Tobacco's specially selected for the best taste in filter
- 1:06:26Longboard's fat when sailing out of his hands as he swung and missed strike one
- 1:06:33Bottom of the fifth, one to nothing Red Sox, huge pitch
- 1:06:37High pop clock, Javier backing out, Maris coming in
- 1:06:43Roger takes it for the up
- 1:06:45Longboard pops to Maris
- 1:06:47One out, and here's Jose Tardibol
- 1:06:52The right fielder, he's nothing out of two so far
- 1:06:55A little fella who can run, likes to bump
- 1:07:01And slash that ball to various fields
- 1:07:05He's up there with one out and nobody on base and a bottom of the fifth
- 1:07:08One to nothing the Red Sox
- 1:07:10On call your Stremsky's home run
- 1:07:13We don't mean to be redundant but we realize many people
- 1:07:16Here's a pitch swung, hopped bow back out of play under the roof just above us here
- 1:07:21We realize many people at this hour in various parts of the country are perhaps moving in and out of offices
- 1:07:31And the score is always a paramount interest
- 1:07:36Here's the pitch, fastball a little bit outside
- 1:07:42Jim Longboard is retired, the first fifteen men in a row who have faced him
- 1:07:51One ball, one strike, Dick Hughes' pitch
- 1:07:54There's a five ball deep center field, flood back
- 1:07:57He's got Romey's waiting, it'll be an easy out he takes
- 1:08:00Tardibol flies to flood
- 1:08:03Two men up, two men down, boy the action is fast today Peewee
- 1:08:08Now both of these fellows, Dick Hughes and Jim Longboard, neither one of them takes too much time
- 1:08:13And I think that's the way a pitcher should work
- 1:08:16Well they've both been very successful so it certainly doesn't hurt them
- 1:08:21Here's Dalton Jones, the first pitch is outside
- 1:08:25Jones is 0 for 2 in this game, had one out of 4 yesterday
- 1:08:29Two men around, nobody on base, the ball game and the fifth
- 1:08:33One to nothing
- 1:08:36Maybe the Red Sox, the pitch swung around all, Sepeta up nicely
- 1:08:39Pitcher covers the toss, he's got it
- 1:08:42One, two, three, a good play, Sepeta to Hughes
- 1:08:45Nothing across to the cardinal for the Red Sox in the bottom of the fifth
- 1:08:48And now at the end of five, the score remains Boston 1, St. Louis nothing
- 1:08:56The guy who can come in off the bench and pinch it for real power, well he's the kind of insurance everybody likes to have
- 1:09:03We mention this because all your grandstand managers are going to need some pinch hitting power real soon
- 1:09:08What with winter just around the corner, you'll probably be changing the lineup on your car
- 1:09:13And calling in a set of new snow tires
- 1:09:15So why not get yourself the toughest pinch hitters in the entire winter league
- 1:09:20B.F. Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Town Snow Tires
- 1:09:24They'll come in cold and hip for power through the heaviest snow
- 1:09:28They'll come right down to grips with ice, take off smooth in the most skittish places
- 1:09:32They're built with new customized nylon cord so they can take
- 1:09:38B.F. Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Town Snow Tires
- 1:09:42Only at your B.F. Goodrich store or dealer
- 1:09:46We pause 30 seconds for station identification
- 1:09:50Pure the kind of ginger that goes into Saratoga ginger ale
- 1:09:56Why? To make a ginger ale that's different
- 1:09:59One you can drink by itself as well as a mixer
- 1:10:03Take a sip and it's mellow, gingery, without anything at you
- 1:10:08Even the bubbles are different, high spirited, but long lasting and never overwhelming
- 1:10:15The people of Saratoga just can't bear to make a ginger ale like everybody else
- 1:10:20This is WGYWGFM Schenectady
- 1:10:24The first five innings of this ballgame are now history
- 1:10:30The Red Sox have one run, four hits, no errors
- 1:10:33The Cardinals no runs, no hits, no errors
- 1:10:35And what is even more important, Jim Longboard has the perfect game
- 1:10:40As we go into the top of the sixth, he has retired 15 men in a row
- 1:10:45Hoolie and Javier will be leading it off for the Cardinals
- 1:10:48And now moving in to tell you all about it is the former great shortstop
- 1:10:52The Brooklyn Dodgers, Kurt Gowdy's partner on the game of the week, Colocass
- 1:10:56And our own good friend and the man we're happy to be team with here on this broadcast
- 1:11:02None other than the Louisville Colonel, Pee Wee Reese
- 1:11:06Thank you very much, Harry, and a fine job
- 1:11:08Yes, sir, Jim Longboard, the big Kyle Lattahenna for the Boston Red Sox
- 1:11:13He found a way to stop these Cardinals from running
- 1:11:17Yes, sir, you've had living one week, Dave
- 1:11:21As Harry told you, he has retired 15 men in a row
- 1:11:26Hoolie and Javier, the first man to face him in this first half of the sixth inning
- 1:11:34Longboard, kicks that big left leg of his up in the air
- 1:11:37Kerrball, he's had the damage today
- 1:11:39Carl Strike one
- 1:11:41Longboard, he takes that familiar pose on the mound every time
- 1:11:47His feet close together
- 1:11:49Kind of shoots over a little bit
- 1:11:52Real good thinker
- 1:11:55He gets ahead of you, he'll come sidearm by the way of third base with that Kerrball
- 1:12:00And he has a dandy, as the Cardinals are found out today
- 1:12:07This will be the second time around for the Cardinals in this ballgame
- 1:12:13And it looks to me like they have not gotten on the Longboard you just
- 1:12:19There's that Kerrball inside
- 1:12:22One ball, one strike on Javier
- 1:12:24Leading things off here in the top half of the sixth inning of the score
- 1:12:28The Red Sox won, and the St. Louis Cardinals nothing
- 1:12:31Yes, sir, a home run by Carl Yosemite
- 1:12:34Longboard looking down through his toucher, Elston Howard
- 1:12:39Javier, way back in that batter's box, pokes up on the bat a little bit
- 1:12:44Elston Howard giving a sign, moves outside
- 1:12:47Here's the pitch, a fastball hit right off the end of the battle with the Red Sox dugout
- 1:12:54We've talked about Longboard, sitting in a great ballgame
- 1:12:58Well, so has Dick Hughes
- 1:13:03He's given up four hits and one run
- 1:13:06Longboard, no run, no hit
- 1:13:11And now the man is weak-based, we're in the top half of the sixth inning, Javier
- 1:13:16One ball, two strikes on him
- 1:13:19Moves that bat back and forth
- 1:13:22Longboard, kicks that big left foot, Kerrball, a little high and outside
- 1:13:28Makes the count two and two
- 1:13:30The end field is about straight away, outfield not too deep
- 1:13:35And Javier up there, he made a great play
- 1:13:39To save a run, and could have been more
- 1:13:43When Elston Howard hit a line shot back to the middle
- 1:13:46He donned forward, came up with it, and flipped it to the shortstop
- 1:13:49They're tying the sides, Longboard breaking pitch outside
- 1:13:54A full count from the middle, and it's a great play
- 1:13:59A full count, bringing two
- 1:14:06The wind is blowing out
- 1:14:09To right center
- 1:14:11Longboard taking a little time
- 1:14:14I believe this is only about the second and third hitters that he's had a long count on
- 1:14:23I was thinking this could have been the first, with a little lazy glide in the right field
- 1:14:28Jose Cardabor, could have moved that over
- 1:14:31It does
- 1:14:33Looks like Javier was fooled on his ball
- 1:14:37Longboard on the three and two pitch, I believe he sat on curvy
- 1:14:41Javier did not have a good cut
- 1:14:44That brings up Dow Macphill with shortstop
- 1:14:51Macphill round out to George Scott, he's first time up, Longboard quickly
- 1:14:56No contact for Macphill
- 1:15:01Longboard right back up on that rubber
- 1:15:04Elston Howard down giving him a sign
- 1:15:09Macphill up close to the plate, choked up on the bat, here's the pitch
- 1:15:13Curve ball in there
- 1:15:15Half back through
- 1:15:17And both of these fellows can pop that catcher's net
- 1:15:22It's one away, two strikes on Dow Macphill
- 1:15:27Now Longboard is standing straight up
- 1:15:30Let's try it on curveball, look out!
- 1:15:36Well they say that Sal Magley, the pitching host for the Red Sox
- 1:15:43Cost this fellow to be a little vicious
- 1:15:46And by vicious I mean not try to really hurt a batter, just to come inside
- 1:15:50Keep that hitter honest
- 1:15:55If you ever have a chance to see Longboard, he's a big, handsome looking fellow
- 1:15:59And the pitch is high and outside, ball two
- 1:16:05And he doesn't look mean
- 1:16:08Now when we used to see that Magley pitch for the Giants, he needed a shave and he looked rough
- 1:16:12And we get on that now and he was rough
- 1:16:15Longboard does not look rough
- 1:16:18You better believe he is
- 1:16:20He won 22 games this year
- 1:16:24Macphill hits one back through the middle
- 1:16:26That's a silly cut over in front of it
- 1:16:28Oh, it's a drive shot!
- 1:16:37That's a silly
- 1:16:39Who did not touch the ball yesterday in the field
- 1:16:42Hard bat rolling
- 1:16:44Having a fine day today, made a couple of great plays
- 1:16:47We have seen some good plays
- 1:16:49Jerry Adara made a good play at second base
- 1:16:51Javier at second base for the Cardinals
- 1:16:53Nick Hughes is the hitter
- 1:16:55The pitcher
- 1:16:57Elton Howard giving his time
- 1:16:59They don't play in two beats
- 1:17:01Squares around the butt one down the first base line
- 1:17:03George Scott coming in
- 1:17:05He pals it straight back on the screen
- 1:17:11We're in the top half of sixth game
- 1:17:14There's two ways
- 1:17:16One to nothing
- 1:17:18The Red Sox over the Cardinals
- 1:17:20High and inside to Hughes
- 1:17:22Makes the count of one ball and one sack
- 1:17:26During the season, Longboard started
- 1:17:2939 games
- 1:17:31He completed 15 of them
- 1:17:39That one and one pitch to Hughes
- 1:17:41A bat ball! You've got that outside corner
- 1:17:44Maybe you can hear it
- 1:17:46The umpire, Al Balik, the high and home play
- 1:17:49When he calls a strike, you can hear him all over the park
- 1:17:52And he's a great one
- 1:17:55That one ball and two strikes, look out!
- 1:17:59Longboard came inside with it
- 1:18:01Almost got Hughes
- 1:18:04As Harry told you, Longboard led the majors
- 1:18:07and hit batsmen this season with 19
- 1:18:11Two ball, two strikes on Nick Hughes
- 1:18:13Longboard giving his time for Elton Howard
- 1:18:15Moves outside, bat ball too high
- 1:18:18And at the full count on the pitchers
- 1:18:21Nick Hughes
- 1:18:24He'll way
- 1:18:29He'll way
- 1:18:31He'll way
- 1:18:39At the Cardinals' end
- 1:18:42Well I'll pitch to the walk another one
- 1:18:44Let's see what happens here
- 1:18:45Here's the pitch
- 1:18:46He's got it out!
- 1:18:50Jim Longboard striking out
- 1:18:51Nick Hughes
- 1:18:52An in-call for the Cardinals
- 1:18:53Nowhere to home
- 1:18:54And nowhere
- 1:18:56After five and a half things are played
- 1:18:58The score, Boston Red Sox won the St. Louis Cardinals
- 1:19:00Nothing
- 1:19:09Some ball game, Pee-wee
- 1:19:11And man, you've got to start thinking now
- 1:19:13in terms of that perfect game
- 1:19:16He has retired, Longboard
- 1:19:18He has retired 18 in a row
- 1:19:20And here's the guy stepping up there
- 1:19:21who went off a fourth
- 1:19:23with a homer
- 1:19:24which represents the difference
- 1:19:25in this one-to-nothing ball game
- 1:19:27Boston leading
- 1:19:28referring to Carl Yosemite
- 1:19:30Yes sir?
- 1:19:32Bob Gibson
- 1:19:34Shut up, Carl Yosemite
- 1:19:36Yes sir, the Red Sox got beat
- 1:19:38Today he hit a home run and a line drive
- 1:19:40in that right field seat
- 1:19:41The first pitch for Yosemite
- 1:19:43Inside, ball one
- 1:19:45Nick Hughes
- 1:19:47who has done a fine job for the Cardinals
- 1:19:50but fails in this game by a score of one to nothing
- 1:19:54as he ran up against the company
- 1:19:55There's a slow curve ball in there
- 1:19:57for a call strike one
- 1:19:59So after throwing that fastball
- 1:20:02during the last time
- 1:20:04you may see something a little bit different
- 1:20:06to him this year
- 1:20:07but Harry says Hughes does not have a good change-up
- 1:20:12Fastball
- 1:20:14Little low
- 1:20:15Two balls in one strike
- 1:20:17As you can see that Hughes is pitching
- 1:20:19careful to Carl Yosemite
- 1:20:22Yosemite stands back in that batter spot
- 1:20:25holds his hand high
- 1:20:27He pokes up on the bat just a little bit
- 1:20:30He has a close set
- 1:20:32Nick Hughes looking down to his catcher Tim McCarver
- 1:20:35Fastball right outside when McCarver was holding that glove
- 1:20:39and they count two balls in two strikes
- 1:20:42There's no one away when the bottom half is six-inning
- 1:20:46And a fine ball game here today
- 1:20:49as Jim Lombard
- 1:20:51for the Red Sox
- 1:20:52have retired 18 men in a row
- 1:21:01Hughes taking a little time
- 1:21:03His uniform
- 1:21:05is soaking wet
- 1:21:09Yosemite fouls it back
- 1:21:11Now the Cavaliers name is 2-2
- 1:21:18They play straight away on Yosemite
- 1:21:20and deep
- 1:21:25Yosemite used to hit a lot to left field
- 1:21:28This year he's decided to pull
- 1:21:31and has paid off
- 1:21:33Hits 43 homers
- 1:21:35Here's a ball fouled off to left
- 1:21:38as Hughes trying to sneak that pitch
- 1:21:40by him
- 1:21:44The sun has gone in
- 1:21:46It's overcast here at Fenway Park
- 1:21:50It's kind of muggy
- 1:21:52In fact it's almost hot
- 1:21:5484 degrees
- 1:21:56Tim McCarver out to talk
- 1:21:58to his pitcher Dick Hughes
- 1:22:00with a count of two and two on Carl Yosemite
- 1:22:02leading things off for the Red Sox
- 1:22:04in the bottom half to six-inning
- 1:22:08Why didn't McCarver tell him?
- 1:22:10He could have told him anything
- 1:22:12They played a game with him the first time up there
- 1:22:14Making him wait
- 1:22:16McCarver moves outside
- 1:22:18As it was, he goes to the left
- 1:22:20Rocks over there underneath it
- 1:22:22and takes it
- 1:22:24Move back to left field
- 1:22:26and when he brought that ball back in
- 1:22:28it kind of tricked him a little bit
- 1:22:30but he came up with it
- 1:22:34The Cardinals lift that ball around the end of the field
- 1:22:36George shots a big first baseman
- 1:22:40He struck out and got a base
- 1:22:42and he's one for two
- 1:22:44He has one of the four hits
- 1:22:46off Dick Hughes
- 1:22:48Scott stands way back in that box
- 1:22:50He really takes the riffle
- 1:22:52Starts to check his swing holds up
- 1:22:54Outside, ball one
- 1:22:58They call him Tater
- 1:23:00because that's what George Scott
- 1:23:02calls a home run
- 1:23:04Curve ball
- 1:23:06Outside
- 1:23:12Scott is a swinger
- 1:23:14He looks at his coach, Popowski
- 1:23:16down at third base to see if he wants him to top away
- 1:23:18at this two and old pitch
- 1:23:20Right inside
- 1:23:22Ball three
- 1:23:24It's one away
- 1:23:26Bottom half for sixth inning
- 1:23:30Scott got two for three yesterday
- 1:23:32He had 19 home runs
- 1:23:34during the season
- 1:23:3682 runs batted in
- 1:23:38That's not a bad year
- 1:23:40Just got the outside corner
- 1:23:42Makes it count three balls in one strike
- 1:23:46Scott checks with Popowski
- 1:23:48His coach at third base
- 1:23:50Back in the batter's box
- 1:23:52Dick Hughes is ready
- 1:23:54Scott swinging that bat
- 1:23:58That ball
- 1:24:00Was he taking?
- 1:24:02Looks like he was
- 1:24:04It's now full count, three and two
- 1:24:06And George Scott
- 1:24:08with this is in there cannot take this one
- 1:24:12Scott will be followed by Reggie Smith
- 1:24:14Here it is
- 1:24:16He held up on it, it was too high
- 1:24:22For George Scott
- 1:24:26It's the second walk given up by Dick Hughes
- 1:24:28And that brings up Reggie Smith
- 1:24:32Dick Williams
- 1:24:36Likes for his club to run
- 1:24:40They have fair speed
- 1:24:42George Scott, a big man at first base
- 1:24:44Well I know it's a pity to hold him on
- 1:24:46But he can move
- 1:24:48Now then Reggie Smith
- 1:24:50wants the umpire Al Barlich
- 1:24:52To take a look at the ball
- 1:24:54Al decides to throw it out
- 1:24:58So Dick Hughes has a new baseball
- 1:25:00It's one away
- 1:25:02Runner on first base, George Scott
- 1:25:04The hitter is Reggie Smith
- 1:25:06We're in the bottom half
- 1:25:08The Boston Red Sox one
- 1:25:10The San Luis Cardinals one and nothing
- 1:25:12Dick Hughes flips the ball over to
- 1:25:14Cepeda
- 1:25:16George Scott may run
- 1:25:18Reggie Smith and get a piece of that ball
- 1:25:20That ball outside
- 1:25:26No run
- 1:25:28No hit
- 1:25:30No errors for the Cardinals
- 1:25:32Or the Red Sox one run, four hits
- 1:25:34And no errors
- 1:25:36We're in the bottom half to six innings
- 1:25:40A flip to first base
- 1:25:42George Scott not taking too big of a lead
- 1:25:44I don't think that George Scott will get an open steal
- 1:25:46It'll be a hit and run if he does go
- 1:25:48That pitch is too low
- 1:25:50Ball two
- 1:25:52MacArthur after talks to Hughes
- 1:25:54Cepeda comes in
- 1:25:56Says something to Dick Hughes
- 1:26:00Hughes on the year
- 1:26:02Let's see what he did
- 1:26:04How many games he started
- 1:26:06Hughes started 27
- 1:26:08He's got a big lead
- 1:26:10He's got a big lead
- 1:26:12Hughes started 27
- 1:26:14During the season he completed 12
- 1:26:18Has good control and he walked 48 men
- 1:26:24The 2-0 pitch
- 1:26:26Inside ball three
- 1:26:32We have a little action
- 1:26:34The Cardinal bullpen to Willard
- 1:26:44Paying old the count on Reggie Smith
- 1:26:46I imagine he'll be taking all the way
- 1:26:48Dick Hughes will just try to get it down in there
- 1:26:50It's too high
- 1:26:52High and outside
- 1:26:54For small four
- 1:26:56George Scott goes down to second base
- 1:26:58Reggie Smith down to first base
- 1:27:00And out of the dugout
- 1:27:02The manager of the Cardinal
- 1:27:04Red Sandy
- 1:27:06Well Harry
- 1:27:08You have seen Dick Hughes so many times
- 1:27:10This year
- 1:27:12Do you think he may be getting a little tired?
- 1:27:14He's had a tough ball game
- 1:27:16I would think so
- 1:27:18But I've seen him pitch out of these kind of spots before
- 1:27:20What gets me, Pee Wee, is the way his uniform
- 1:27:22Is just so absolutely soaked
- 1:27:24With perspiration
- 1:27:26And there must be a lot
- 1:27:28Warmer down on that field than it is
- 1:27:30Up here
- 1:27:32The temperature was 84 degrees going into the game
- 1:27:34Red is walking
- 1:27:36Red Cheney is walking off the field
- 1:27:38So Dick Hughes will stay in there
- 1:27:40To pitch to Jerry Adair
- 1:27:42I think Dick Hughes is doing a little more
- 1:27:44Down on that field
- 1:27:46Quite a bit more, Pee Wee
- 1:27:48Right on first and second
- 1:27:50It's one away
- 1:27:52Jerry Adair is the hitter
- 1:27:54And the catcher, Tim McCarver
- 1:27:56Is pulling his center fielder
- 1:27:58And getting Kurt Flood to come in a little bit
- 1:28:00Kurt Flood is playing
- 1:28:02Hit away in center field
- 1:28:04Jerry Adair in that top
- 1:28:06Position of his
- 1:28:08Takes the first pitch out that
- 1:28:10And Dick Hughes is getting a little wild here
- 1:28:12As he wants good shots
- 1:28:14And Reggie Smith
- 1:28:16After getting the shrimp key out
- 1:28:22Dick Hughes
- 1:28:24Taking a little more time now
- 1:28:26McCarver moves outside his catcher
- 1:28:30McPitch
- 1:28:32Hit to the third baseman's channel
- 1:28:34He's got the ball
- 1:28:36A hard hit ball by Jerry Adair
- 1:28:58Down to Mike Cannon
- 1:29:00Which could have been a double play
- 1:29:02But Cannon could not find a handle
- 1:29:04Everybody's safe
- 1:29:06And Mike Cannon
- 1:29:08Was getting an arrow on that
- 1:29:10Hard hit ball by Adair
- 1:29:12We have George Scott on his third
- 1:29:14Reggie Smith on his second base
- 1:29:16Adair on his first
- 1:29:18And it looks to me like it's going to be all
- 1:29:20Or Dick Hughes
- 1:29:22As Red Singed comes out of that dugout
- 1:29:26And Harry told me
- 1:29:28That
- 1:29:30Riles is warming up down there
- 1:29:32I mean Willis
- 1:29:34Riles is a starting 50
- 1:29:36What about this Willis
- 1:29:38Has a good sinker
- 1:29:40He's a rookie here
- 1:29:42Like Hughes his first year in the major leagues
- 1:29:44He did a tremendous job
- 1:29:46Appeared in 64 games for the Cardinals
- 1:29:48He has a good curve ball
- 1:29:50Primarily though it's his thinking fastball
- 1:29:52That he depends on
- 1:29:54It's tough play that time on
- 1:29:56For Hughes
- 1:29:58Adair hit the ball sharply
- 1:30:00But asked Cannon
- 1:30:02And after fumbling the ball
- 1:30:04He had lost his chance for a double play
- 1:30:06He might still have had a play at first base
- 1:30:08On Adair but he was in no position
- 1:30:10Upon taking the ball up
- 1:30:12To throw and so he had to hold it
- 1:30:14So it's going to be Ron Willis coming in
- 1:30:16And we're going to pause 30 seconds
- 1:30:18Here for station identification
- 1:30:20Here in the giant reach of KNBR AM and FM
- 1:30:22And we told you all of the fans
- 1:30:24Took the warrior games on KNBR
- 1:30:26Radio 68
- 1:30:28And the
- 1:30:51High school hires with beer
- 1:30:53If it tastes you wanted pie time for hires
- 1:30:55This was Harry Carrey
- 1:30:57With Pee Wee Reeves
- 1:30:59When the bottom half of the sixth inning
- 1:31:01The Red Sox now have a chance to break this game open
- 1:31:03After Yostrowski flat out the block
- 1:31:05To start the sixth inning
- 1:31:07George Scott walked
- 1:31:09So did Reggie Smith
- 1:31:11That put runners at first and second
- 1:31:13Then Adair hit a sharp ground ball to Shannon
- 1:31:15Which he could not feel cleanly
- 1:31:17He was charged with an error
- 1:31:19And that filled the bases
- 1:31:21So the bases are loaded with only one out
- 1:31:23The Red Sox have made one run and that was a homer
- 1:31:25Yostrowski in the fourth inning
- 1:31:27The turbo guys of this moment
- 1:31:29A 1-1, full hit, no error
- 1:31:31The Cardinals haven't had a man reach base
- 1:31:33Jim Lomborg is working on a perfect game
- 1:31:35And if Don Larson is listening somewhere
- 1:31:37I don't guess anybody can appreciate
- 1:31:39More Lomborg situation right now
- 1:31:41Than the one man who knows what it is to a pitch
- 1:31:43A perfect game in the World Series
- 1:31:45Don Larson
- 1:31:47The Cardinals haven't had a man reach 18 minutes of base
- 1:31:49And the Cardinals have a man reach 18 minutes of base
- 1:31:51And the Cardinals haven't had a man reach 18 minutes of base
- 1:31:53And the Cardinals haven't had a man reach 18 minutes of base
- 1:31:55And the Cardinals haven't had a man reach 18 minutes of base
- 1:31:57However, the Cardinals will have the top of the batting order
- 1:31:59Coming up in the seventh starting with Brock
- 1:32:01So it's very important here
- 1:32:03If the Red Sox can get out of this inning
- 1:32:05Without too much damage
- 1:32:07They're still in the world game
- 1:32:09Cutter-Sully walks up now to him
- 1:32:11With a chance to really break it wide open to the Red Sox
- 1:32:15That's where Ron Willis
- 1:32:17In predicts you
- 1:32:19And about a half to six in it
- 1:32:21The Red Sox
- 1:32:23With a base hit right here
- 1:32:25To go out and start to break this game wide open
- 1:32:27The envy of the Sox off in second baseman
- 1:32:29Back to double play
- 1:32:31The Pater first
- 1:32:33Shannon in it third
- 1:32:35Hector Solley hits the ball hard
- 1:32:37And it's going to be a close run going back
- 1:32:39He's going to need the ball
- 1:32:41But George Teller has no trouble tagging up the third
- 1:32:43And scoring the second run of this ball game
- 1:32:45And Reggie Smith
- 1:32:47Tags up the second and goes over the third
- 1:32:49And the Solley hits that ball hard
- 1:32:51But Perksworth is right back there
- 1:32:53And the Red Sox
- 1:32:55Go out in front
- 1:32:57And throw it to the numbers
- 1:32:59We now have one of those on first and third
- 1:33:01And it's two away
- 1:33:03And the hitters Elton Hart
- 1:33:09Elton Hart
- 1:33:11Getting a nice hand
- 1:33:13In Lombard
- 1:33:15Coming to the on deck circle
- 1:33:17And he's going to get a line shot
- 1:33:19His last time up at Javier
- 1:33:21Made to the great play on
- 1:33:23The first hit by Willis
- 1:33:25Is outside ball one
- 1:33:29Willis started his career
- 1:33:31In 1962 with Brunswick
- 1:33:3566 to the Indianapolis
- 1:33:37In St. Louis
- 1:33:39Here's the pitch, a breaking pitch
- 1:33:41And outside
- 1:33:47One ball, one strike
- 1:33:55Willis taking his time, look to his catcher
- 1:33:57Tim McCarver, McCarver moves inside
- 1:33:59Elton Hart, let's see what goes
- 1:34:01To the third run of the Solley, McCarver
- 1:34:03Bluffs down to third base
- 1:34:05And Reggie Smith out of there
- 1:34:07As Jerry Adair
- 1:34:09Broke from first going to second
- 1:34:11McCarver bluffs to fold
- 1:34:13To second base and tries to
- 1:34:15Pick Reggie Smith off third
- 1:34:17But Reggie Smith did not
- 1:34:19Fall far
- 1:34:21And McCarver, McCarver
- 1:34:23Sees the ball a little bit low but Mike Shannon
- 1:34:25Blocked it
- 1:34:27Yes he did, Shannon may have saved a run
- 1:34:29He just blocked up
- 1:34:31Throwing the dirt with his chest
- 1:34:33They're going to give Elton
- 1:34:35Hart a free ticket
- 1:34:37To get Longbottom to pitcher
- 1:34:39And you can hardly find them for that
- 1:34:45Looks like it could get a little rainy here
- 1:34:47I certainly hope not
- 1:34:49Tim Longbarg
- 1:34:51Tim Longbarg
- 1:35:05Getting a standing ovation
- 1:35:07From these wonderful fans here
- 1:35:09At Fenway Park in Boston
- 1:35:11It's two away, the bases are loaded
- 1:35:13Ron Willis, fastball
- 1:35:15Look out
- 1:35:17It almost got Jose Cardobo
- 1:35:19Off the right in the on deck circle
- 1:35:21As Tim Longbarg
- 1:35:23Did not quite get around on that one
- 1:35:25One strike on him
- 1:35:27Willis holds pretty hard
- 1:35:29You must be ready, Longbarg
- 1:35:31As opening fans up a little bit
- 1:35:33Willis looking down to his catcher
- 1:35:35McCarver
- 1:35:37Here's the pitch
- 1:35:39Curveball
- 1:35:41And they're going in there, half strike two
- 1:35:43On it's third
- 1:35:45Reggie Smith
- 1:35:47On it's second
- 1:35:49Joey Adair
- 1:35:51On it's third, Elton Hart
- 1:35:53The hitter, Jim Longbarg
- 1:35:55The big pitcher who's done such a terrific job
- 1:35:57Here today
- 1:35:59He has retired 18 men in a row
- 1:36:01He lost his bat
- 1:36:03And that's a ball for Longbarg
- 1:36:05And that's a ball for the Red Sox
- 1:36:07Here in the bottom half of the six
- 1:36:09One run
- 1:36:11No hits, one and three men left on base
- 1:36:13So the score
- 1:36:15After six complete innings of Boston Red Sox
- 1:36:17Two and the Cantor's Cardinals nothing
- 1:36:19Once again we're happy to present
- 1:36:25This is Harry Carrey with Pee Wee Reese
- 1:36:27At Sunway Park
- 1:36:29They've turned the lights on
- 1:36:31Skies have darkened considerably
- 1:36:33And the lights have been turned on now
- 1:36:35The Cardinals going into the top of the seventh
- 1:36:37Have yet to put a man on base
- 1:36:39Lou Block will be leading it off
- 1:36:41So the Cardinals will have Black, White and Brown
- 1:36:43Trying to break Jim Longbarg's streak
- 1:36:45Which now is
- 1:36:4718 consecutive batters
- 1:36:49Retired
- 1:36:51We're getting a few drops of rain
- 1:36:53And more than just a few drops
- 1:36:55And some of the fans now scurry
- 1:36:57For a shelter
- 1:36:59The total at this moment
- 1:37:01Two runs, four hits, no errors to the Red Sox
- 1:37:03No runs, no hits, one error
- 1:37:05For the St. Louis Card
- 1:37:07So the rain
- 1:37:09Has started here in Boston
- 1:37:11And this balmy summer weather
- 1:37:13Is going to come to an end
- 1:37:15Lou Block leads it off
- 1:37:17And here to tell you about it is Pee Wee Reese
- 1:37:21Thank you Harry
- 1:37:23Lou Block leading things off
- 1:37:25In the top half of seventh inning
- 1:37:27Longbarg
- 1:37:29Has picked a great game
- 1:37:31For the Red Sox, they've beaten this ballgame
- 1:37:33By a score of two to nothing
- 1:37:35Elton Howe, Elton Howe holds it, hug it right in the middle
- 1:37:37Ball hit hard, durrata
- 1:37:39Up with one hand,
- 1:37:41Kicked the ball over his red shot
- 1:37:43As the Red Sox
- 1:37:45Kicked that ball around the infield
- 1:37:47Elton Howe, out to talk to his
- 1:37:49Pickers, Jim Longbarg, and I'm sure
- 1:37:51That Jim Longbarg knows
- 1:37:53What's happening in this game
- 1:37:55I was in that game with Van Lawson
- 1:37:57When he beat the Brooklyn Dodgers
- 1:37:59And didn't allow any others
- 1:38:01To reach base
- 1:38:03Reach base is a little embarrassing, hey?
- 1:38:07Kurt Blood
- 1:38:09Jim Longbarg
- 1:38:11Looked down, the big kick
- 1:38:13And a tinker in there for call strike one
- 1:38:15I imagine you will hear the fans here
- 1:38:17At Fenway Park too
- 1:38:19With every pitch now
- 1:38:21As we're in the top half of seventh inning
- 1:38:23And Jim Longbarg has the perfect
- 1:38:25Game so far
- 1:38:27Little high
- 1:38:29One ball, one strike
- 1:38:31Kurt Blood
- 1:38:35Had quite a year
- 1:38:39With the Cardinals hitting 3.35
- 1:38:41A tough man to strike out
- 1:38:43The pitch is outside
- 1:38:45Two balls in one strike
- 1:38:47Longbarg keeps looking at his thumb
- 1:38:49Like he may have a blister
- 1:38:51Need something to watch closely, Billy
- 1:38:55After each pitch
- 1:38:57I noticed him during that last Sunday
- 1:38:59He checked his thumb
- 1:39:05But I'll say one thing for him
- 1:39:07He doesn't seem to be losing
- 1:39:09Anything off of that fast ball
- 1:39:11Or his curve ball
- 1:39:13Kurt Blood had a real good ripple shot
- 1:39:15When pounded back and it counted 2-2
- 1:39:17Longbarg with those
- 1:39:19Feet close together
- 1:39:21Elton Harris giving the sign
- 1:39:25Kurt Blood holding that bat high
- 1:39:27Not too big, he's got good speed
- 1:39:29Longbarg pat on curve ball
- 1:39:31Just now
- 1:39:33It's a full count 3-2
- 1:39:35Steve Carlton, the young left hander
- 1:39:37Of the Cardinals is now working
- 1:39:39In the bullpen
- 1:39:43A full count
- 1:39:45On Kurt Blood
- 1:39:47As Jim Longbarg gets
- 1:39:49A new ball
- 1:39:51The outfield, the infield
- 1:39:53Straight away, Longbarg
- 1:39:57Goes to his mouth, wipes his hand off
- 1:39:59Wipes his fingers off on every pitch
- 1:40:01He's looking down for the sign
- 1:40:03He has it, the kick
- 1:40:05The throw, and he pounded back
- 1:40:07And Kurt Blood
- 1:40:09Is still alive
- 1:40:13I believe now
- 1:40:15Peewee, this is only the fourth man
- 1:40:17That he's come down to a full count on
- 1:40:19I would say
- 1:40:21It's quite a ball game
- 1:40:25Yet Hughes got it for the
- 1:40:27Cardinals
- 1:40:29Gave up to Ron Willis
- 1:40:31As a little lazy fan, no one will
- 1:40:33Catch that one, down the right field line
- 1:40:35George Scott, the first baseman going over
- 1:40:37Cannot catch up with it, way back up in the stands
- 1:40:39And the count remains 3-2
- 1:40:43Blood, of course
- 1:40:45Has not had a hit today
- 1:40:47As
- 1:40:49No one else on
- 1:40:51The Santa Cruz Cardinals
- 1:40:53He got it out to the third baseman
- 1:40:55Got it out to the shortstop
- 1:40:57Which is a real close play on both of them
- 1:41:01The pitch, the kick by Longbarg
- 1:41:03Is right outside
- 1:41:05And that's the first man
- 1:41:07To reach
- 1:41:09Base against Jim
- 1:41:11Longbarg, as Kurt Blood
- 1:41:13Gets a base on ball
- 1:41:15Well, we will not have a perfect game
- 1:41:17He still hasn't given up
- 1:41:19For his ball play, we
- 1:41:23Roger Maier
- 1:41:25He popped to the right
- 1:41:27He popped to the shortstop
- 1:41:29He's all for two
- 1:41:31Kurt Blood, who has good speed
- 1:41:33It's one away
- 1:41:35The Red Sox
- 1:41:37Are out and far through to nothing
- 1:41:39Longbarg makes a flip over to George Scott
- 1:41:41The whole team is in the lead
- 1:41:43He makes a flip over to George Scott
- 1:41:45The whole Kurt Blood, close
- 1:41:49Longbarg, working with three days rest
- 1:41:53He looks down at his catcher
- 1:41:55Roger Maier hits one out in the left field
- 1:41:57He steps it going back, he has it
- 1:41:59Hits it all back
- 1:42:01To the shortstop, Ketra Silly
- 1:42:03And Ketra Silly in the middle there
- 1:42:05Elston Howard out to top
- 1:42:07To a pitcher
- 1:42:09In Longbarg
- 1:42:13The hitter
- 1:42:15Orlando Cepeda
- 1:42:19He is the big man
- 1:42:21Of the Cardinals, has been all year
- 1:42:23But in the series, in the first game
- 1:42:25And here in the second game
- 1:42:27He has not had a hit
- 1:42:29He's all for six
- 1:42:33He's overdue as he's
- 1:42:35Climbing that right foot of his
- 1:42:37He's got some dirt
- 1:42:39They call him the bull, he looks like a bull
- 1:42:41The hair has grown out of the dirt back of his foot
- 1:42:43He has a cold stance
- 1:42:47The first pitch
- 1:42:49A breaking pitch a little bit too high
- 1:42:55One ball on him
- 1:42:57In Longbarg, taking a little time
- 1:42:59Kurt Blood on his first base
- 1:43:01Who likes to run
- 1:43:03What's this, Cardinals trail by
- 1:43:05Nothing? I doubt if they will send Kurt Blood
- 1:43:07Longbarg
- 1:43:09Looking down to
- 1:43:11Elston Howard, here is the pitch
- 1:43:13Curve ball too high
- 1:43:15They want to give this big fella a chance
- 1:43:17To have this ball game up
- 1:43:19Cepeda checking with his
- 1:43:21Coach, Joe Shilkes out at third base
- 1:43:25Longbarg
- 1:43:31Looking down for his sign
- 1:43:33He comes down, looks over at first base
- 1:43:35At Kurt Blood, here is the pitch
- 1:43:37Hit hard
- 1:43:39He comes up for the sixth ball
- 1:43:41There he goes
- 1:43:43Kurt Blood at second base
- 1:43:45And that's all for the Cardinals
- 1:43:47In the top half of the seventh inning
- 1:43:49No air
- 1:43:51No air, the one man left on base
- 1:43:53And the score after six and a half
- 1:43:55Played a cross and two
- 1:43:57And the ball goes Cardinals nothing
- 1:44:09One and a half to seventh inning
- 1:44:11And a little shot by Rico Petrocello
- 1:44:13Just made quite a play
- 1:44:15It was a tough chance
- 1:44:17In between her, a short hop
- 1:44:19And Rico
- 1:44:23Look here what I have
- 1:44:25And Jim Longbarg
- 1:44:27Almost lost his no hitter
- 1:44:29But he still has it going
- 1:44:31He can't pick his perfect game anymore
- 1:44:33As he walked Kurt Blood
- 1:44:35But I'm sure the most
- 1:44:37The most thing he wants right now
- 1:44:39Is to win this game
- 1:44:41Jose Cardinal
- 1:44:43Leading things off for the Red Sox
- 1:44:45The first pitch is low by Ron Willis
- 1:44:47Ron Willis
- 1:44:49On the year
- 1:44:51The first pitch is low by Ron Willis
- 1:44:53On the year
- 1:44:55Has an unrun average
- 1:44:57Of 2.67
- 1:44:59That's pretty good
- 1:45:01A foul off the left by Tartabal
- 1:45:03One ball and one strike
- 1:45:05He started 65 games
- 1:45:11His record, one sixth and lost five
- 1:45:13Willis looking down to his catcher Tim McCarver
- 1:45:15The target down low by McCarver
- 1:45:17Tartabal looks like he wants to bun it
- 1:45:19That's the ball goal
- 1:45:21And it's too low, two balls and one strike
- 1:45:23Tartabal who has good speed
- 1:45:25Likes to bunt
- 1:45:27Mike Stanton in his third base
- 1:45:29A couple of steps
- 1:45:31Tepeda in his first base
- 1:45:33Ron Willis looking down to McCarver
- 1:45:35Here's the pitch, the kick
- 1:45:37Outside
- 1:45:39Foul three
- 1:45:41Austin Ray Scott
- 1:45:43Two runs on four hits
- 1:45:45They scored a run in the fourth
- 1:45:47They scored a run in the sixth
- 1:45:49They won half the fourth inning
- 1:45:51Tartabal with a count of three
- 1:45:53And went on, they would like to get him on
- 1:45:55Here right now
- 1:45:57He's on there, too high ball for
- 1:46:05Dalton Jones
- 1:46:09Back out, flat out
- 1:46:11Hit a ball to
- 1:46:13Tepeda in first base, he's over three
- 1:46:15Dalton Jones gets the piece of the ball
- 1:46:17Let's see if they'll be
- 1:46:19Bunning or letting Dalton Jones
- 1:46:21Hit away, he did Sunday
- 1:46:23Hit one right by the third base
- 1:46:25And has a four to first base
- 1:46:27And Tepeda
- 1:46:29Trying to
- 1:46:31Make that quick peg like he's
- 1:46:33Left to throw back to Willis and try to
- 1:46:35Teg Tartabal, that's another quick throw to
- 1:46:37First base
- 1:46:39Almost got by Tepeda
- 1:46:43And Tepeda kind of
- 1:46:45Playing with Jose Tartabal
- 1:46:49Dalton Jones
- 1:46:51Here's the first, he squares around the
- 1:46:53Bunch of all, down to first base line foul
- 1:46:55Tartabal
- 1:46:57Backs to first base
- 1:46:59One strike on Dalton Jones
- 1:47:01This is what happened
- 1:47:03Sunday
- 1:47:05Dalton Jones
- 1:47:07Tried to bounce the first pitch, he put it
- 1:47:09At foul on the next pitch
- 1:47:11Dick Williams, the manager of the Red
- 1:47:13Team hit away, let's see if it happens today
- 1:47:17He's freezed away, hits the ball
- 1:47:19Off the left, I don't think it's anybody
- 1:47:21Not the ball in
- 1:47:23And cannot throw anyone out
- 1:47:37On the play, Tartabal
- 1:47:39Goes down to second base
- 1:47:41And on to first base, Dalton Jones
- 1:47:45After trying to bounce
- 1:47:47Dick Williams gave Dalton Jones
- 1:47:49A hit turn
- 1:47:53Jones went to left with it
- 1:47:55Max Lohan knocked the ball down
- 1:47:57But they had no play
- 1:47:59Anywhere
- 1:48:01And Billy Muffet
- 1:48:03The pitching coach for the Cardinals
- 1:48:05Apt to talk to Ron Willis
- 1:48:07We're going to have a new
- 1:48:09Pitcher, who is it, hey?
- 1:48:11It'll be Joe Harner, the left-hander
- 1:48:13Who's done a great job all season long
- 1:48:15For the Cardinals in these kind of situations
- 1:48:17A sinker baller
- 1:48:19He wheels from the side
- 1:48:21Puts on the left-handed batter
- 1:48:23For that matter, he's done very effectively
- 1:48:25Against right-handers too
- 1:48:27Joe Harner will be the new pitcher
- 1:48:29For the St. Louis Cardinals
- 1:48:31Jack Lemaide is also
- 1:48:33Working out there now
- 1:48:35And we're going to pause here
- 1:48:37And we'll be back in four station identification
- 1:49:07The red side
- 1:49:09The Cardinals are in the second base
- 1:49:11Dalton Jones at first list
- 1:49:13There's nobody out
- 1:49:15And Carl Yastrowski
- 1:49:17Who hit a homer in the fourth inning
- 1:49:19To put the red side on the scoreboard first
- 1:49:21Yastrowski will be the hitter
- 1:49:23The red side's out in front
- 1:49:25Two to nothing
- 1:49:27With two men on, nobody out
- 1:49:29The best hitter up there
- 1:49:31I'd say the best hitter
- 1:49:33The best hitter
- 1:49:35Nobody out, the best hitter up there
- 1:49:37I can't really do
- 1:49:39Break this game wide open
- 1:49:41On the other hand, the Cardinals
- 1:49:43A pre-hitting ball come
- 1:49:45With good batters up and down
- 1:49:47The batting harder
- 1:49:49Have run into a no hitter so far
- 1:49:51For seven innings at the hands of
- 1:49:53Young Jim Longboard
- 1:49:55Joe Harner
- 1:49:57One four lost four during the season
- 1:49:59With an earned run average of 2.59
- 1:50:01He's just about finished
- 1:50:03With his tactics coffee
- 1:50:05So can we? Let's see what's going to happen
- 1:50:07Okay Harry
- 1:50:09Carl Yastrowski will be the first hitter
- 1:50:11To face Joe Harner
- 1:50:13On his first and second
- 1:50:15You've got your
- 1:50:17Best hitter on the ball club
- 1:50:19We have a little more rain coming down right now
- 1:50:23And will he have any money?
- 1:50:25I don't think so
- 1:50:29Joe Harner, the pitcher
- 1:50:31He's running around
- 1:50:33And he's outfield
- 1:50:35He's using the rosters
- 1:50:37He checks with the shot
- 1:50:39Top of the second baseman
- 1:50:41In case the ball is hit back to him
- 1:50:43Who wants it?
- 1:50:45Now he walks up on the rubber
- 1:50:47Yastrowski, he's in the box, he's ready
- 1:50:49McCarver giving the sign
- 1:50:51Harner looks back at the run up
- 1:50:53Hardable at second base, here's the pitch
- 1:50:55A good swing
- 1:50:57No contact by
- 1:50:59Yastrowski
- 1:51:01As Harner
- 1:51:03Come that fastball inside on Yastrowski
- 1:51:110-1's account
- 1:51:13On Yastrowski
- 1:51:15No runs, no hits
- 1:51:17One air for the Cardinals
- 1:51:19Two runs, five hits, no airs
- 1:51:21For the Boston Red Sox
- 1:51:23We're in the bottom half of the seventh inning
- 1:51:25No one-half runners on open second
- 1:51:27Ball outside
- 1:51:29Makes account of one ball and one strike
- 1:51:31They move the ball around on Yastrowski
- 1:51:35You cannot hit this fellow one way
- 1:51:41And he hits left hander pretty good
- 1:51:45One ball, one strike
- 1:51:47Harner looks back at the runner at second base
- 1:51:49That ball, another miss
- 1:51:51Strike two
- 1:51:53Harner
- 1:51:55First time I've seen him this year
- 1:51:57Goes pretty hard
- 1:51:59Yastrowski gets out of that matters box
- 1:52:01Gets some dirt on his hands
- 1:52:05The rain is still coming down
- 1:52:07Here at Fenway Park in Boston
- 1:52:09And we had such a beautiful day
- 1:52:11Starting this game off
- 1:52:13As we told you a little earlier
- 1:52:15We had the overcast sky
- 1:52:17Here's the pitch by Harner
- 1:52:19High, ball two
- 1:52:25Two balls, two strikes on
- 1:52:27Carl Yastrowski
- 1:52:29Cardinals down at second base
- 1:52:31At first base, Dalton Jones
- 1:52:37Joe Harner looking down
- 1:52:39To his catcher, Tim McCarver
- 1:52:41McCarver giving the sign
- 1:52:45Yastrowski waving at Pat high in the air
- 1:52:47Here's the pitch by Harner
- 1:52:49And that's a nice little head ball
- 1:53:17That's the second home run
- 1:53:31For the Superman
- 1:53:33Carl Yastrowski in this ball game
- 1:53:35He has given four runs
- 1:53:37The Red Sox now lead by a score of five and nothing
- 1:53:39As George Scott gets in there
- 1:53:41And Harner
- 1:53:43Is a little while off that first pitch
- 1:53:45He's got a little bit of a
- 1:53:47Ball one
- 1:53:49And I'm telling you
- 1:53:51Just as soon as that ball was hit
- 1:53:53I knew it was gone in front of the
- 1:53:55Light-feeler, Roger Mares
- 1:53:57That ball in there at the cost
- 1:53:59Like one
- 1:54:01Makes you count one ball in one strike
- 1:54:03George Scott moves up on the plate
- 1:54:05Just a little bit
- 1:54:07And he thought that ball was outside
- 1:54:09He holds the bat
- 1:54:11Just a little bit high
- 1:54:13And he's got it
- 1:54:15He's a hard-slinger
- 1:54:17Harner, next pitch is out
- 1:54:19Two balls in one strike
- 1:54:23Harner looking down at his catcher
- 1:54:25McCarver, the wind up, the pitch
- 1:54:27A fastball is taking away from
- 1:54:29George Scott, put on a mid-strike
- 1:54:31Two
- 1:54:33McCarver wants to talk to
- 1:54:35His pitcher, Harner
- 1:54:39I haven't seen Harner throw a curveball yet
- 1:54:41He doesn't have a curveball
- 1:54:43He has a slider that moves
- 1:54:45Pretty good
- 1:54:47What a year
- 1:54:49He was swamped yesterday, nothing out of four
- 1:54:51The Red Sox got beat 2-1
- 1:54:53Today he is at 2-1
- 1:54:55Good ball, 4-0, 5-0
- 1:54:57Right above player
- 1:54:59The feeling too, that George Scott
- 1:55:01Fouls his back
- 1:55:03As we said this morning
- 1:55:05He stopped
- 1:55:07Seems like he stopped
- 1:55:09The Red Sox attacked a little bit
- 1:55:11That's exactly what Gibson did yesterday
- 1:55:13He was kind of overpowered
- 1:55:15Everyone
- 1:55:17Dick Hughes, pitch fine ball
- 1:55:19But right here, bottom half to seventh inning
- 1:55:21McCarver is running into a little trouble
- 1:55:23Look out
- 1:55:25Ball three, almost hit George Scott
- 1:55:27Makes the count 3-2
- 1:55:29Still no one out
- 1:55:35Joe Harner
- 1:55:37Still coming down
- 1:55:39It is dark
- 1:55:41The lights are on
- 1:55:43The wind up
- 1:55:45The ball hit out of the left field
- 1:55:47That may be out for the wall
- 1:55:49No, move right back there
- 1:55:51Harner is the scoreboard
- 1:55:53To take it for at number one
- 1:55:55That wind is blowing from
- 1:55:57Left to right
- 1:55:59It was blowing out again
- 1:56:01Here then off of the scoreboard
- 1:56:03Reggie Smith
- 1:56:05He's now
- 1:56:07Moving over batting right handed
- 1:56:09Against the left handed pitcher
- 1:56:11Joe Harner, he's a switch hitter
- 1:56:13Who was batting left handed against Dick Hughes
- 1:56:15A right hander who started this game
- 1:56:21This hole for two
- 1:56:23Has a ripple on that one, strike one
- 1:56:27Got away
- 1:56:29Joe Harner
- 1:56:31Looking down on McCarver
- 1:56:33Here's the kick
- 1:56:35Pass ball, pass it to Dickie
- 1:56:37Pass it off to right
- 1:56:39Down to first base side, back in the stands
- 1:56:41Strike two
- 1:56:43Reggie Smith has an open stance
- 1:56:45Right handed, a closed stance left hander
- 1:56:47Joe Harner
- 1:56:49Looking at the ball, turning on the mound
- 1:56:51Now he's on the rubber
- 1:56:53He looks at McCarver
- 1:56:55Giving the stand
- 1:56:57McCarver outside
- 1:56:59As were the pitch, a little bit too much out there
- 1:57:01Makes it count, one ball and two strikes
- 1:57:05Run away
- 1:57:07The score
- 1:57:09The Boston Red Sox find the San Luis Cardinals
- 1:57:11Nothing going to the bottom half to 7th inning
- 1:57:15As the ball hit out into right center
- 1:57:17Let's see if first ball can get over the Roger Maris
- 1:57:19Goal, so a Roger Maris half part
- 1:57:21And takes it
- 1:57:23Out number two, that ball was hit
- 1:57:25In right center
- 1:57:27Roger Maris
- 1:57:29That's the right fielder, went over there
- 1:57:31And took the ball easy, looks like it may be in there first
- 1:57:35You know
- 1:57:37Here we are, just wonder whether
- 1:57:39The batting practice after the game yesterday
- 1:57:41Is the answer
- 1:57:43That Percellio struck out three times
- 1:57:45Yesterday, he's had a big day and so has your
- 1:57:47Femtys
- 1:57:49Gary Adair swings on the first pitch, fouls it back
- 1:57:51Tony Kubek and I
- 1:57:53As I said, we were talking about that, we have never
- 1:57:55Seen anybody, I know no one on our club
- 1:57:57Ever went out after a World Series game
- 1:57:59And took batting practice
- 1:58:01I've never heard of it before either
- 1:58:03I believe it helped
- 1:58:05A changing world, Barry
- 1:58:09Adair, hits one foul down the first base
- 1:58:11On the baby goes back when he has a pass
- 1:58:13No, it's in the stands
- 1:58:15I didn't get a chance to talk
- 1:58:17To call your Femtys, but as I said
- 1:58:19I talked to Petra Selle
- 1:58:20You know, in all its takes
- 1:58:22Barry, it's just one little thing
- 1:58:24Or even just something
- 1:58:26That could build up your confidence in your response
- 1:58:28Sometime it helps
- 1:58:30And your Szyfki
- 1:58:32Whatever it was
- 1:58:34He's now back
- 1:58:36Yeah, but there's a guy on the last day of the season
- 1:58:38That's four out of four
- 1:58:44Those are the kind of slumps I like to get into
- 1:58:46Adair, swings on the fastball
- 1:58:48Fouls it back, still two strikes on Jerry
- 1:58:50No balls and two strikes
- 1:58:52Joe Hunter
- 1:58:54In release here
- 1:58:58Of Ron Willis
- 1:59:00Who came in to pitch for Dick Hughes
- 1:59:02This is the third pitcher for the Cardinals
- 1:59:06Hunter
- 1:59:08Taking a little time
- 1:59:10The wind up, the kick
- 1:59:12That ball, inside
- 1:59:18Joe Hunter
- 1:59:20Failed down
- 1:59:22When he released that one
- 1:59:28One ball, two strikes on Jerry Adair
- 1:59:30He's up close to the plate
- 1:59:32He stands right into the ball
- 1:59:34There's the ball, hit hard out of the center field
- 1:59:36Close by coming in, he can't get it
- 1:59:38Takes it all, one hop
- 1:59:40Back into the infield
- 1:59:42Comes the ball, making the turn back in his first base
- 1:59:44And Jerry Adair
- 1:59:46He's talking about Petra Selle
- 1:59:48And he's riding back as yesterday
- 1:59:50What has he done today?
- 1:59:52What a face at his first time up
- 1:59:58He's stuck out
- 2:00:00In the fourth inning
- 2:00:02Get his back of his stride
- 2:00:04In the sixth inning of the score run of four
- 2:00:08So he's one for two
- 2:00:10The first pitch
- 2:00:12A breaking pitch, low on the dirt
- 2:00:14The carver makes a nice pick up
- 2:00:16One ball on Rico, Mississippi
- 2:00:18Petra Selle is two ways
- 2:00:20Jerry Adair on his first base
- 2:00:24They play Petra Selle straight away
- 2:00:26He has good power
- 2:00:28If he gets that in front of his ball
- 2:00:30He can tear it a long way
- 2:00:34A foul, tip
- 2:00:36Right in back of you, Al Bartick can now pick it up
- 2:00:38There it is
- 2:00:40Tim McCarver picks it up
- 2:00:42Close the ball back to Joe Hunter
- 2:00:44That is one ball and one strike
- 2:00:48Dan Woczinski is warming up for the Red Sox
- 2:00:50Now the nerve-racking
- 2:00:56One ball, one strike
- 2:00:58On Rico, Petra Selle
- 2:01:00Hunter looking over to Jerry
- 2:01:02At first base
- 2:01:04Cepeda holding him off
- 2:01:06Here's the kick, the pitch, back ball
- 2:01:08Outside McCarver makes a bluff
- 2:01:10Down to Cepeda at first base, no throw
- 2:01:12Two balls and one strike
- 2:01:16On Rico, Petra Selle
- 2:01:18The Red Sox have come up with three runs
- 2:01:20Here in the bottom half of the seventh inning
- 2:01:22On Carl Yoske's home run
- 2:01:26Inside, ball three
- 2:01:28And that was his second home run
- 2:01:30Yoske of the day
- 2:01:32He's had it in, four of the five runs
- 2:01:36Elton Howard
- 2:01:38In the on-dress circle
- 2:01:42Hunter
- 2:01:46Looks over to there
- 2:01:48Here's the kick, fast ball
- 2:01:50No one outside
- 2:01:52High four, Petra Selle
- 2:01:54Goes to first base, moving down to second
- 2:01:56Jerry Adair, moving out of that dog out
- 2:01:58Is Filly Muffin
- 2:02:00The pitching goes
- 2:02:02By the Cardinals
- 2:02:04Now he comes back in and he wants to talk
- 2:02:06To Red Sandy
- 2:02:08Red Sandy says something to him
- 2:02:10And Filly Muffin
- 2:02:12Gives the sign to Augie Donatelli
- 2:02:14The umpire down at second base
- 2:02:16And we want a new pitcher
- 2:02:18He's got Jack Lamay the right-hander
- 2:02:20And Al Jackson the left-hander out there
- 2:02:22As the Red Sox
- 2:02:24Now build up a five-and-nothing lead
- 2:02:26And can't help but look ahead to the
- 2:02:28Next two innings for the Cardinals
- 2:02:30Because Jim Longboard
- 2:02:32Is working on a no-hitter
- 2:02:34Only once before in the history of
- 2:02:36Baseball was a no-hitter pitch
- 2:02:38In the World Series
- 2:02:40And that was Dan Lawson's perfect game
- 2:02:42For the Yankees against the Dodgers
- 2:02:44In 1956
- 2:02:48Tom Magley by the way
- 2:02:50Who's the Longboard pitching coach
- 2:02:52With the Red Sox
- 2:02:54Was the loser in that game
- 2:02:56But Larson took the perfect game in
- 2:03:00One hitters have been pitched by
- 2:03:02Ruebach with a come to 1906
- 2:03:04Klob Hathaw
- 2:03:06With a come to 1945
- 2:03:08And you all remember Floyd Bebens
- 2:03:10With a no-hitter going to the bottom of the line
- 2:03:12With two on and he was beaten
- 2:03:14We'll pause here 30 seconds for
- 2:03:16Station identification
- 2:03:18You're in the giant reach of KNBR

- 2:03:52Howie Howie a Sunway part
- 2:03:54Where the Red Sox now leads by to nothing
- 2:03:56The Red Sox is still at 5-1
- 2:03:58With no errors the Cardinals haven't had a hit
- 2:04:00Naturally no runs that committed one error
- 2:04:02Jack Lamaib
- 2:04:04Becomes the Cardinals fourth pitcher
- 2:04:06He used to be with the Red Sox
- 2:04:0832 year old right-hander
- 2:04:10Did some effective work for the Cardinals
- 2:04:12After they uphamed him from the New York Mets
- 2:04:14About midseason or so
- 2:04:16We
- 2:04:18The Red Sox have touched
- 2:04:20The Salias first base in a day
- 2:04:22On second base
- 2:04:24Two out Joe Horner was
- 2:04:26Touched for a three run homer by
- 2:04:28Cargas Dempsey the man he was brought
- 2:04:30In the face
- 2:04:32Then got the next two men out
- 2:04:34With a derrush single then touched the Salias
- 2:04:36Now Jack Lamaib
- 2:04:38Will be facing Elston Howard
- 2:04:40Howard is 0-2 in the ballgame
- 2:04:42Slide out and was
- 2:04:44Loved to be hit on a great play by Howie Howie
- 2:04:46Was intentionally passed in the sixth
- 2:04:48This is the second game
- 2:04:50In the World Series
- 2:04:52Open day tomorrow the two teams practice
- 2:04:54In St. Louis and Saturday
- 2:04:56The feelings rezone
- 2:04:58At Bush Memorial Stadium
- 2:05:00In St. Louis Elston Howard
- 2:05:02The batter and once again Pee Wee Reeds
- 2:05:04It's still raining here
- 2:05:06At Fenway Park in Boston
- 2:05:08Renner's on first and second Elston Howard
- 2:05:10Is ahead of two away
- 2:05:12Jack Lamaib
- 2:05:14The new pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals
- 2:05:16He's the fourth of the day
- 2:05:18Good fastball put on this back one
- 2:05:20Lamaib
- 2:05:22His record
- 2:05:24Three wins and seven losses
- 2:05:26England average 3.30
- 2:05:28Elston Howard way back
- 2:05:30In that batter's box
- 2:05:32He has a closed stance
- 2:05:34Used to fold the ball
- 2:05:36Quite a bit now that he hits the ball
- 2:05:38In the right right center
- 2:05:40Jack Lamaib comes
- 2:05:42That looks back to Joey Adair at second base
- 2:05:44Breaking pitch low on outside
- 2:05:46Ball one one ball in one strike
- 2:05:48Two away
- 2:05:50Elston Howard drying his hands off
- 2:05:54Clearing up a little bit
- 2:05:56Getting a little bit brighter
- 2:05:58We certainly hope so
- 2:06:02Jim Lombard
- 2:06:04Is going for a slow hitter
- 2:06:06Elston Howard fouls a fastball
- 2:06:08Straight back one ball and two strikes
- 2:06:10Right
- 2:06:18Lamaib
- 2:06:20Massaging that old horse
- 2:06:22Fired up out on the mound
- 2:06:24Gets some razzam on his hands
- 2:06:26Looks down at his catcher, catcher Tim McArthur
- 2:06:30One ball two strikes on Elston Howard
- 2:06:32He comes fifth
- 2:06:34Looks back to second
- 2:06:36Here's the curveball that's too high
- 2:06:38Makes the cap two and two
- 2:06:40It's been a long inning
- 2:06:42For the Cardinals
- 2:06:44As the Red Sox has come up a three run here
- 2:06:48Still in the bottom half to seven minutes
- 2:06:54Lamaib
- 2:06:58Looks for the sign
- 2:07:00He comes set to pitch
- 2:07:02Ball hits hard on the first base line
- 2:07:04But his foul
- 2:07:10Looks like Howard was trying to go
- 2:07:12To right field with that ball
- 2:07:14Back to second base is Jerry Adair
- 2:07:16Back to first
- 2:07:18Texas Silly
- 2:07:22The second game of the World Series
- 2:07:24And this is the 64th World Series
- 2:07:28American League teams have a
- 2:07:30Two to 25 edge in the series competition
- 2:07:36Two balls two strikes on Elston Howard
- 2:07:38Lamaib
- 2:07:40He's ready
- 2:07:42He's struck him out
- 2:07:44And that's all for Elston Howard
- 2:07:46And that's all for the Red Sox here
- 2:07:48In the bottom half to seven minutes
- 2:07:50But they came up with three runs on three hits
- 2:07:52No airs and left two men on base
- 2:07:54So the score after seven full innings
- 2:07:56The Boston Red Sox fire the table
- 2:07:58The Red Sox are the commanding lead
- 2:08:00Of five to nothing as we go into the top of the eighth
- 2:08:02And the St. Louis Cardinals have yet
- 2:08:04To make a hit
- 2:08:06Jim Romborg
- 2:08:08Working on a no hitter
- 2:08:10Only one man reached base
- 2:08:12And that on a three to pitch
- 2:08:14That barely missed Kurt Watt
- 2:08:16In the seventh inning
- 2:08:18He had retired 19 in a row at that point
- 2:08:20Narrow some line to yesterday
- 2:08:22And the Red Sox are the leading team
- 2:08:24In the top of the eighth
- 2:08:26Narrow some line to Yatsensky
- 2:08:28And left and to play the hits perhaps
- 2:08:30The hardest ball of the day
- 2:08:32And that's the selling in a one handed staff
- 2:08:34Of a low line drive on one hop to his left
- 2:08:36Turned into a fourth play
- 2:08:38And the seventh inning
- 2:08:40Now it's Tim McCarver deleted off on the cardinals
- 2:08:42Five to nothing Red Sox
- 2:08:44Over the St. Louis
- 2:08:46Once again Pee Wee
- 2:08:48And McCarver Mike Shannon
- 2:08:50And
- 2:08:52Olean Javier
- 2:08:54To face Jim Romborg
- 2:08:56The big tall white hander here
- 2:08:58As they go in the top half of the eighth inning
- 2:09:00And as you know
- 2:09:02Romborg is not giving up a hit
- 2:09:04On the season he was 22 and 9
- 2:09:06Now the tall lean fellow
- 2:09:08Of this Romborg is
- 2:09:10He's 6'5
- 2:09:12Weighs 200 pounds
- 2:09:14He's 24 years old
- 2:09:16He's 24 years old
- 2:09:18He's 24 years old
- 2:09:20At quite a year
- 2:09:22And the fans
- 2:09:24Are now pulling for him
- 2:09:26To go all the way here at Boston
- 2:09:28Pee Wee was just
- 2:09:30Telling me here that Romborg
- 2:09:32Won eight to third innings against the Angels
- 2:09:34At Anaheim earlier this season
- 2:09:36With a no hit game
- 2:09:38Finally lost the no hitter and also lost the contest
- 2:09:40Five to nothing
- 2:09:42Red Sox
- 2:09:44Over the St. Louis Cardinals
- 2:09:46Tim McCarver the first pitch turn of the curve ball
- 2:09:48A little bit too low
- 2:09:50In Lombard
- 2:09:52One thing he must
- 2:09:54Not do now is to start to aim that ball
- 2:09:56Don't steer, keep
- 2:09:58Sored, I'm sure he knows that
- 2:10:00His feet close together to wind up the kick
- 2:10:02And here's the pitch, a little grounder
- 2:10:04After Joliette, there shouldn't be any trouble
- 2:10:06Up with the flip it over to George Scott
- 2:10:08And that's all for Tim McCarver
- 2:10:14Mike Shannon
- 2:10:16Shannon has not had
- 2:10:18Too much luck
- 2:10:20With Tim Lombard
- 2:10:22Lombard has shown him nothing but curve balls
- 2:10:24All day
- 2:10:26And he struck him out both times
- 2:10:28He sat on curtain the last time up there
- 2:10:30And I believe that Shannon may have been looking
- 2:10:32For a fast ball
- 2:10:34He kind of went down
- 2:10:36And the ball blew over the plate
- 2:10:38And Mike I know how you feel because I've done the same thing
- 2:10:40Lombard has a real
- 2:10:42Good sat on curve ball
- 2:10:44And it's tough for a right handed
- 2:10:46To stay in there
- 2:10:48Once you take your eye off of that ball
- 2:10:50You have had it
- 2:10:52Lombard getting a sign
- 2:10:54Elton Howard moves outside
- 2:10:56Curve ball blowing outside ball one
- 2:10:58The sequence of hitters
- 2:11:00Certainly enhances Lombard's chances
- 2:11:02Of this no hitter
- 2:11:04He's got McCarver out of the way
- 2:11:06He's got Shannon and Javier
- 2:11:08Knoxville the pitcher and the leadoff man
- 2:11:10To come up here
- 2:11:12Lombard has to shut that
- 2:11:14The long throw
- 2:11:16With a good shot at post
- 2:11:18Two down
- 2:11:20You are so right here
- 2:11:22Let's go for get a
- 2:11:24We may get a ten hitter
- 2:11:26Or a Mack vote
- 2:11:28Well we have to worry about that
- 2:11:30To make things
- 2:11:32As the air gets off
- 2:11:34Excuse me Dave but as you look at what's
- 2:11:36Coming up the one man
- 2:11:38Perhaps that
- 2:11:40Will be a big
- 2:11:42Buster in this no hitter
- 2:11:44If it comes it will be Lou Block
- 2:11:46We are sure to come up one more time in this game
- 2:11:48Javier
- 2:11:50About a two away
- 2:11:52He's got it out
- 2:11:54To shortstop
- 2:11:56Flat out
- 2:11:58To right field his last time up
- 2:12:00Jim Lombard the kick
- 2:12:02A curve ball
- 2:12:04It could be a base hit out of the left field
- 2:12:06Javier you should be able to
- 2:12:08Cut the ball up and knock it down
- 2:12:10In the second with a stand up double
- 2:12:20Well there goes Jim Lombard double
- 2:12:22Elton Howard out the walk
- 2:12:24Talk to him
- 2:12:26And the fan
- 2:12:28Giving Lombard a
- 2:12:30Real nice hand
- 2:12:32And he deserves it
- 2:12:34We'll have a pincet of
- 2:12:36For
- 2:12:38Dow Maxwell
- 2:12:40And it's Bobby Tolan
- 2:12:46Bobby Tolan
- 2:12:48Riding for the shortstop
- 2:12:50Dow Maxwell
- 2:12:52And they tell me that this
- 2:12:54Fellow right here Bobby Tolan
- 2:12:56Could be
- 2:12:58The next right fielder
- 2:13:00For the St. Louis Cardinals
- 2:13:02When Roger Maris decides to retire
- 2:13:04Not a ball player
- 2:13:06He's only 21 years old
- 2:13:08Anyway and he is a good
- 2:13:10Ball player he can run he can hit he can throw
- 2:13:12He's got great
- 2:13:14Power for a little fellow by the way
- 2:13:16Well it's too bad
- 2:13:18About Jim Lombard if he lost he's no
- 2:13:20Hitter there on a double
- 2:13:22By Javier down in that
- 2:13:24Left field corner but there was
- 2:13:26No doubt about it when he hit it
- 2:13:28It was not a cheapie
- 2:13:30Lombard got that curve ball
- 2:13:32Just a little bit into
- 2:13:34Inside
- 2:13:36It looked like Javier
- 2:13:38Down in second the pitch by
- 2:13:40Look out Tolan tries to hold up
- 2:13:42On the swing hits the ball down to
- 2:13:44Dalton Jones Dalton Jones
- 2:13:46Pulls the ball to George Scott and that's all
- 2:13:48For the Cardinals here at the top half of the eighth
- 2:13:50Now one more hit
- 2:13:52There's one man left on base
- 2:13:54The Sorest the seven and a half
- 2:13:56He's a player that often lives back by the
- 2:13:58He's a sewer
- 2:14:06Now inside Freedom
- 2:14:08Of this little
- 2:14:10Coward driving to David
- 2:14:12Let's go round and
- 2:14:14See the blasting
- 2:14:16For a player we can
- 2:14:18call the game
- 2:14:20Famous
- 2:14:22For great
- 2:14:26It's gonna get you, and it's the entire human race.
- 2:14:33Give it up for Beaver, God speed you.
- 2:14:36We're going to show you that God speed us!
- 2:14:40Stopping us in here, nearby Dodd-Dealer, the grand big fatty, you, Dodd-Colell.
- 2:15:00You'll find it gives you extra room, extra comfort, and a casual open feel as smaller cars just pass by.
- 2:15:07Jim Lombard has just received a standing ovation, and he has richly earned it.
- 2:15:12By the way, see, we have the Boston-based CG Polar icebreaker at Desto,
- 2:15:17navigating among icebergs and swirling snow some 750 miles from the North Pole,
- 2:15:23listening to NBC and Armed Forces radio send their greetings.
- 2:15:32The first pitch by Jack LaMabe, the Jim Lombard, swung on in this strike one.
- 2:15:38We're going into bottom half, the A setting.
- 2:15:42Jack LaMabe, the kick, the pass ball, in there for Carl strike two.
- 2:15:48The fourth pitcher for the Cardinals, Hughes, went five in a third inning,
- 2:15:53gave up two runs on four hits, struck out five.
- 2:15:56He had walked three. Willis, two thirds of an inning, two hits, two runs, one hit, one strike out, and one walk.
- 2:16:04Miner, took two thirds of an inning, gave up one run, two hits, struck out another one, and walked one.
- 2:16:12LaMabe is in there right now.
- 2:16:17Lombard has made only 81 pitches in his first eight innings.
- 2:16:26Herbaugh, hung on, and missed the strike three.
- 2:16:37Lombard gets a nice hand as he goes back to the dugout.
- 2:16:44Very stellar. You get an ovation when you strike out.
- 2:16:50That fellow certainly deserves it today.
- 2:16:54Jose Tardubor, see what he's done. Flat out.
- 2:16:58Struck out, flat out, and walked.
- 2:17:04Pitch is too low for a one.
- 2:17:08Five to nothing, Red Sox. Over to the St. Louis Cardinals, Jack LaMabe, the pitch, as the ball pops up.
- 2:17:17Third baseman Mike Stanning in foul territory. Over there, underneath it, infected for outnumbered Drew.
- 2:17:24You know that the Cardinals won the first game in fact to Bob Gibson by a score of three to one,
- 2:17:30and the Red Sox trying to even it out here today in this second game at Fenway Park,
- 2:17:35and they lead by a score of five to nothing. Tomorrow will be off, and the series will open up
- 2:17:42in St. Louis on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
- 2:17:48Dalton Jones, face hit out of the right field.
- 2:17:51Roger Marican, picked the ball up, down on one knee. Dalton Jones makes the turn at first, back and in.
- 2:18:00Carl Yosemite.
- 2:18:16Standing ovation for Carl Yosemite. He's walked in the first inning, hit a home run in the fourth inning.
- 2:18:23Right out the left field, in the sixth inning, and hit a home run in the seventh inning. He's batted in four of the five runs.
- 2:18:30It's two out. LaMabe, first pitch. Curve ball.
- 2:18:34Face hit out in the right center. Kirk Blood over to cut it off.
- 2:18:37Now we're going to pass to see Kirk Blood's arm. Not too bad.
- 2:18:42But Dalton Jones goes on in the third.
- 2:18:46They've been talking about Kirk Blood's arm, so that one's pretty good.
- 2:18:53And as Kyle was saying, you shut him out yesterday, but not today as he holds his two home runs and a single.
- 2:19:03Brings up George Scott. He got two hits yesterday. He has won today. One for three.
- 2:19:12The fans are really coming alive. George Scott's cranked on the first pitch. Strike one. Fouls his back.
- 2:19:20Dalton Jones on his third. Carl Yosemite on his third.
- 2:19:26And the bullpen for the Cardinals, the little left-hander Al Jackson.
- 2:19:32Jack LaMabe.
- 2:19:36He'll be holding the runners on. Of course, runners on first and third.
- 2:19:41He's getting a sign. He comes back. Here's the pitch.
- 2:19:47Bring it on in. Strike two on a good fast ball.
- 2:19:53I've always seen these Red Sox play quite a bit.
- 2:19:58And the more I see of this, you're strumping, the more you have to like it.
- 2:20:03Not only was that fast, he does one fine job in that outfield.
- 2:20:10Two strikes on. George Scott McCarver moves outside. Here's the pitch. It's a little too far outside.
- 2:20:16One ball and two strikes.
- 2:20:21George Scott hits 19 home runs on the year.
- 2:20:28Tapeta talking with his strengthy down at first base. He likes to talk.
- 2:20:35Little tap with his defense. Mike Shannon has to hurry. The long throw over to Tapeta.
- 2:20:40That retards George Scott and that retards the Red Sox here.
- 2:20:44In the bottom half, the ace and a no run. Two hits, no errors and two men left on base.
- 2:20:53If you want to settle questions about shaving, ask your face about it.
- 2:20:57The average face is smarter than it looks. It may not know much about razors, but it knows what it likes.
- 2:21:04Take the new Gillette Tecmatic razor. It's light. You don't bear down so much.
- 2:21:10And the face appreciates this lightness. It not only feels better, it runs less of a chance of getting nicked or cut.
- 2:21:18Or say halfway through a shave you notice the edge is getting dull.
- 2:21:23Try changing blades with your old razor. Hard, isn't it?
- 2:21:28Slippery fingers, sharp little thing. You just wouldn't bother.
- 2:21:33With the Tecmatic you just flip the lever for a fresh shaving edge. It's easy. You would bother.
- 2:21:40From your face's point of view, this is good. It means you don't keep shaving with a worn out blade.
- 2:21:47Consult an expert about the Gillette Tecmatic razor. Ask your face about it.
- 2:21:54Yesterday the Cardinals beat the Red Sox because Bob Gibson overpowered the Red Sox hitters.
- 2:22:01Today the Red Sox are beating the Cardinals because Jim Lomborg has been superlative.
- 2:22:06He's made only 81 pitches in eight innings. The only hit he allowed came after two or eight innings.
- 2:22:12Now he's got himself a five to nothing shutout going at the top of the ninth with a pin-killer Dave Rickards going up there for the Cardinals.
- 2:22:20Okay Harry, and you said just what I was thinking. Jim Lomborg is overpowered.
- 2:22:27The Cardinals today just like Bob Gibson did yesterday with the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:22:33This is the best that I've seen Lomborg and he picked a fine time to beat that. And that's what he is.
- 2:22:40Dave Rickards. That's ball. Out outside, ball two.
- 2:22:48Dave Rickards. He's a footfitter batting left-handed against the right-handed Jim Lomborg.
- 2:23:00The kick, the pitch, the two-low, ball three.
- 2:23:05Dick Williams, the manager of the Red Sox. Sal Magley, the pitching coach.
- 2:23:12Up on the step, they're watching Jim Lomborg to make sure he does not get too tired.
- 2:23:19He's been under a lot of pressure. A fast ball might get in there, but it's all strike one.
- 2:23:23Jim Lomborg has made, as we told you, 81 pitches coming into this inning.
- 2:23:32And that's not too many. A three-and-one pitch into Dave Rickards. It popped up.
- 2:23:39Pector Shelly, the shortstop, underneath it and takes it.
- 2:23:44Out number one. Just two out.
- 2:23:49The Red Sox are from evening this series up.
- 2:23:54Here's the fellow we were a little concerned about before Javier got the base hit, Lou Brock.
- 2:24:11He had four hits yesterday. The first pitch, the kick, Lomborg.
- 2:24:16Al, over to the right. Almost got Joe Cronin, the president of the American League.
- 2:24:25Long time shortstop of the Red Sox. General manager of the Red Sox.
- 2:24:33Jim Lomborg, the kick, the pitch, Lou Brock at that side. One ball and one strike.
- 2:24:44Lomborg does not take too big of a windup. He always starts how he speaks most together.
- 2:24:50Most of the times he will stoop over and take the stand.
- 2:24:53This time he did hear the tall kick with the left foot. And a fast ball just got the outback runner.
- 2:25:00He has a good thinker.
- 2:25:03Boy, he has been tired one good. He's throwing his heart now as he did in the first inning.
- 2:25:08He looks like he could pitch another game if we had a doubleheader here today.
- 2:25:12I would say he had something on that ball right there.
- 2:25:15A real good fast thinker by Jim Lomborg.
- 2:25:21And a surprise, Lou Brock a little bit. One ball, two strikes on Brock.
- 2:25:30Now then Lomborg has scooped over. He's taking the stand. Here's the kick, the pitch.
- 2:25:34Down the ball out to second base and there he is. He's up for the flip. The ball over to John Scott.
- 2:25:39Two ways.
- 2:25:53The last chance by the Cardinals.
- 2:25:57And there are two out here in the top half to ninth inning.
- 2:26:01Kurt Blood, the first pitch for Lomborg. Thinker, come on. Here's track one.
- 2:26:09And the fans.
- 2:26:12Smelling victory. Here's Boston.
- 2:26:17And they have really turned out in this ballpark. Here's a foul hit out in the center field.
- 2:26:21He's hitting the all of it. Reggie Smith.
- 2:26:25And the Cardinals are in the top half of ninth inning. No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on base.
- 2:26:35And the final four. Boston by the Tankers.
- 2:26:39And the fans.
- 2:26:55And the fans.
- 2:27:09And the fans.
- 2:27:27This little message is strictly for smokers who've never tasted a Camel cigarette. Camel smokers, you know what we mean. You other guys, start walking.
- 2:27:41This is Harry Carrey with Pee Wee Rave. We just witnessed one of the masterpieces of World Series history. A one hitter hit by 24 year old, six foot five inch Jim Lomborg. Who proved that the 22 and 9 record of his in the American League this season was certainly no fluke.
- 2:28:01He was absolutely the most dominant pitcher you've ever seen in a game with this kind of pressure. With his team one game down in the World Series. Playing his second game at home.
- 2:28:12Realizing he's been losing this one. They go into St. Louis down two with three to play. A lot of pressure. He came up with just a magnificent pitching performance.
- 2:28:23He was never in any trouble. The only hit he allowed was with two out of the eight. A double by Harvey Erring to the left field corner. He didn't permit a base runner until one was out to seven. And he missed on a three two pitch and then just barely. So only two base runners were on base against him. He paced only 29 none.
- 2:28:41And it never has been a better pitch game unless it be Don Larson's perfect game back there in 1956. Well hey I saw both of them. I was in the stands on this one and played in the other one. I think the only chance that Don Larson went to three and two. He was on old Pee Wee.
- 2:29:01I'll have to tell you that I did strike out after that. But this fellow really did dominate this game today. Even more so I believe than Bob Gibson did yesterday. I saw him pitch this final game against Minnesota here on Sunday. And I tell you maybe a young boy grew up right there Harry. A pitch by the ballgame.
- 2:29:19Yeah there's only been one no hitter that was Larson. And now Jim Warnborg joins the list. And the select few it is he becomes the fourth man to ever have pitched a one hitter. Joining the list of that Rubach of the Cubs, Clark Hassell of the Cubs and Floyd Bevin of the Yankees. Now we will continue when I wrap up in one minute.
- 2:29:42Why is it the minute you step into the average tire store you feel like you're in the middle of some jungle. Is it the confusion, the mystery, the foreign sounding language? Whatever the reason, it's all over. B.F. Goodrich has taken the confusion out of buying tires. How do they do it?
- 2:30:05With straight talk, plain English. Which means you don't have to struggle through all that confusion over tire cords, rubber compounds, tread patterns, or sweat over a confusing array of tire grades and prices.
- 2:30:18All you do is tell the Goodrich people how you drive. How fast, how much. And they'll tell you what tire is best for you. They'll even give you a handy tire value calculator so you can pick the right tire yourself.
- 2:30:30They even save yourself some money. So the next time you hear the call of tire confusion, ignore it and let straight talk from B.F. Goodrich be your guide.
- 2:30:45Our director today, Lum Dillon. NBC audio supervisor Joe Sturdyello. The totals again as the Boston Red Sox have evened up the series. Four Boston, five藍, nine hits, no errors. Jim Lambois, a spectacular pitcher.
- 2:31:04For the Cardinals, no runs, one hit, one error. Vic Hughes, who took creditably, but nevertheless, was the loser. Now, Peewee, the Dexter quiz. And now, a day off, the Red Sox will familiarize themselves with Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
- 2:31:22The Cardinals will work out there too. And once again, with a series tied, one game apiece will be out on Saturday.
- 2:31:29Okay, I will not be with you because you'll be on television, but it's been a pleasure working with you.
- 2:31:35We'll be back with a rundown of the story and the reveal of the outlanding plays in a moment.
- 2:31:42["Tintin Tintin Tintin Tintin Tintin Tintin"]
- 2:32:11See the dad toys, the new world we drive in, it's there.
- 2:32:16We get to be the dad fever.
- 2:32:19We get to be the dad fever.
- 2:32:28The excitement of the 1968 Dodge Monaco.
- 2:32:31Monaco, a luxurious car with a list of standard equipment as long as you are.
- 2:32:36Monaco gives you a smoother, more comfortable ride because Monaco is a better car all around.
- 2:32:42Make sure you see Monaco at your nearby Dodge dealers.
- 2:32:46And don't forget to pick up your free copy of the Joe Gadgeo and the World Series store book at participating dealers.
- 2:32:53Pee-wee this bar game is decided actually with one foul swoop.
- 2:32:58Arlie Strempke led off the fourth inning in a nothing nothing bar game and lined one into the right field corner, a 387 foot home run.
- 2:33:08And as it turned out, that was all the Red Sox needed.
- 2:33:12They picked up another one on the seventh with two awks, an error by Shannon, an excusable error by the way, the ball was hit hard, and a sacrifice fly by Petra Sellers.
- 2:33:21And then on the seventh, a sustainable at Wap and Dalton Jones at Singles.
- 2:33:26Carl Horner, a left-hander, came into pitch to just Strumke.
- 2:33:29And once again, Carl lined one, this time high and deep into the right center field stand.
- 2:33:35So he pulled today, Pee-wee, in case anybody questioned it, that he can hit a home run off a right-hander and he can hit a home run off a left-hander.
- 2:33:44He certainly did. And another thing, Harry, about this game, you can see that Jim Lombard missed business today.
- 2:33:51The first hitter, Lou Brock, that walked up there, he got four hits yesterday.
- 2:33:56You can call that purpose pitch a little brushback or whatever you want, but you and I know that he was telling the Cardinals and Lou Brock that I mean business, and you better look out.
- 2:34:06And he meant business all day.
- 2:34:08You know, as the Cardinals head for St. Louis, Pee-wee, I think they might consider themselves fortunate to be even up in this series, one game apiece.
- 2:34:16And I say that for this reason. Them middle hitters, Maris, Cepeda, and McCarver, who do most of the damage, have been held by the rough dots to one lone hit in 20 times at bat in these two games.
- 2:34:29A single by Maris is all in 20 trips to the plate combined between Maris, Cepeda, and McCarver, the very heart of the Cardinal batting artist.
- 2:34:39Yes sir, and you know, Cepeda, of course Maris hit it and the two run justly, but they were with a little weak round ball.
- 2:34:46Well one up was too weak, but they were ground balled.
- 2:34:49But Cepeda, he has gone all for Cepeda.
- 2:34:53And as you say, they're very fortunate, but I think you better watch for this big bull now, because he may come a little slow when he gets back in his home park.
- 2:35:01I don't think it's much of a question at all.
- 2:35:03How about the St. Louis Park? Is it going to make any difference?
- 2:35:06I don't think so. I don't think it's going to make too much difference to Jasemsky.
- 2:35:10The ball he hit out here today, for example, would have been home run to St. Louis.
- 2:35:14The ball maybe doesn't carry quite as well as it does here at Fenway.
- 2:35:18Cuddle me into seeing the Cardinals, so many of them, see we saw Fenway Park for the first time.
- 2:35:24Leroy will play it, it's the first time they even started the building.
- 2:35:27And I know many of the red dots now, the same way, will be seeing Gorsh Memorial Stadium for the first time, Leroy playing in it for the first time.
- 2:35:35So with the series all tied up one-on-one, it's an interesting note to come into St. Louis on as the series resumes Saturday afternoon at Bush Stadium in St. Louis.

- 2:36:06Final score again, the Red Sox 5, the Cardinals, nothing.
- 2:36:12The series tied up at a game apiece.
- 2:36:15The hitting star today, Paul Jasemsky, with three out of four driving in fours, scoring two.
- 2:36:23Peewee, I just want to say too, I'll be on TV down in St. Louis with our buddy Kurt Jardy starting Saturday for the next three games.
- 2:36:34What a real pleasure it was and a privilege for me to work with you.
- 2:36:38We've known each other for a long time, I broadcast many games that you played in, and it was good to have a chance to rub elbows with you up here in the broadcasting room.
- 2:36:48Thank you very much, Harry, very good luck to you on television, and we'll come back to Boston, I'll see you here.
- 2:36:53Very good. That wraps up the second game of the 1967 World Series.
- 2:36:59Be with us again Saturday from St. Louis for the third game of the World Series, when your host again will be the new Gillette stainless steel blade, the Spoilers.
