- 0:22SPEAKER_00: When I became a college professor in 2004, one of the courses I was assigned was Introduction to the Arts.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It was a basic survey course covering visual art, architecture, music, theater, and film from a Christian philosophical viewpoint.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The area that I knew least about in that list of subjects was architecture.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I had always been fascinated by architecture, but I had never really studied it in depth.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And over the years, as I have learned more about architecture, it's become one of my favorite subjects.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I'm especially drawn to Gothic cathedrals.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: These medieval works of art represent one of the pinnacles of human ingenuity and creativity.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The designers, laborers, and craftsmen worked for decades and in some cases centuries to complete these massive projects.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: My personal favorite is Chart Cathedral in France.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Built from 1194 to 1260, it's one of the oldest Gothic cathedrals in existence.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Chart is famous for several iconic features, including its beautiful stained glass windows, a medieval labyrinth, and a purported relic of the Virgin Mary's tunic.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Now consider the mindset of the artists and craftsmen who built Gothic cathedrals.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: They worked really hard to build something that they knew would outlive them, not only by decades, but by centuries and perhaps millennia.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's a really stark contrast to today's creative world, where we don't normally think in centuries or decades or even years.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We think in weeks, we think in days and hours and moments in the span of time that it takes to make a tweet or a social media post.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And today, most of our creative work is designed for quick consumption.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: We share social media posts that we hope people will like in the 30 minutes after we post it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: We write blog posts that we hope will go viral in the days after they're published.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: We hope our book gets traction in the weeks and months after it's released.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: We hope that our podcast or video gets downloaded thousands or millions of times in the few years after we release it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not saying those things are bad because I'm engaged in all those mediums and more.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But is there a way to balance our need for relevance and timeliness with a more long-term perspective on our creative work?
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And I think as we ponder these things, the real question is: will your creative work outlive you?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: We don't create just for today, we create for decades from today.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So let us create, let us work, and let us write with excellence, and with a view to impact not just people today, but impacting people many years from now, just like we can enjoy gothic cathedrals today, many hundreds of years after they were built.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: How do you think your writing might impact people decades into the future?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: By the way, one of the best ways to do that is to market your writing well, is to market your books well.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And I don't know of any better resource to help us market our books and to help create a lasting impact than Indie Author University, featuring the Book Marketing Mastery course.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: If you're tired of being disappointed with your book sales and you want to sell more books faster, easier, and with more fun than ever, make sure and sign up today.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: As you've probably heard me say on this podcast before, if you've been listening for a while, Book Marketing Mastery is created by my friend and business coach Honoree Corter, who has sold over 4 million books.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So she is an author who is clearly positioned to impact not just today, but people years or even decades from now.
