- 0:08Speaker 3: Boutlet Cap show Man special guests in here one of
- 0:11Speaker 3: the greatest MC's on the planet, Rhapsody.
- 0:13Speaker 1: What's up, brother man?
- 0:14Speaker 3: I see you.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm happy to be back.
- 0:17Speaker 3: May seventeen, were finally getting your album?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Yeah, four and a half years.
- 0:20Speaker 3: It's it's been it's been four and a half years.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah, twenty nineteen was my last album.
- 0:24Speaker 3: And then The L's Wisdom was what twenty seventeen. Yep,
- 0:28Speaker 3: that was a Grammy album. Yeah, who were you nominated
- 0:30Speaker 3: against that year? Because I remember thinking specifically like jay
- 0:33Speaker 3: Z four four.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Four, Kendrick dam Tyler to creator flower.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Boy, that was a good year.
- 0:41Speaker 1: There's one more I'm forgetting.
- 0:42Speaker 3: That was a good year. Yeah, we ended up winning. Damn.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Kendrick took that. I am never mad.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You're in a very particular best dance. With everything going
- 0:52Speaker 3: on in the world of hip.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Hop, it's exciting right now.
- 0:57Speaker 3: It is, and I you know, obviously there's been some
- 1:00Speaker 3: I'm like extra unnecessary noise.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I was just having that conversation.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It's a lot of noise right now and inserting into
- 1:09Speaker 2: a moment that's.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Like special and making it corny now, Like.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Right, I feel like it's gotten really corny this past week.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Let the main event be the main event, please.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I agree. But it's interesting because I always like, even
- 1:21Speaker 3: like rewinding a few weeks, you've worked with Cole and
- 1:26Speaker 3: you obviously have worked with Kendrick a bunch. You're you know,
- 1:31Speaker 3: like I remember talking to Punch about this at the
- 1:33Speaker 3: iHeart Awards. I saw him backstage and I was like,
- 1:35Speaker 3: this was before my delete later came out, okay, and
- 1:40Speaker 3: I was like Dreamville Fest was coming that weekend, and
- 1:43Speaker 3: I was like, this feels really weird because like we're
- 1:45Speaker 3: everyone's friends with each other, like TD and Dreamville are
- 1:49Speaker 3: like this, like all the fans are kind of like innerwoven,
- 1:52Speaker 3: like you know, Schoolboy Q and Scissors on dream bill Fest,
- 1:56Speaker 3: like Kendrick and Cole are friends. But it felt great.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I'm just curious, like, how did you feel when you
- 2:04Speaker 3: first heard everything? Being like somebody who's worked with both people,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and like, you know, a lot of people discovered you
- 2:09Speaker 3: from working with Kendrick. You're obviously on the Bemper Butterfly,
- 2:11Speaker 3: Like what was what was your thoughts?
- 2:13Speaker 2: I was excited. I mean, I thought, this is hip hop.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It was built on competition. Yes, so let's compete. It's
- 2:19Speaker 2: just words. It's just words, you know, if it comes
- 2:21Speaker 2: anything out of that. But I think this is really
- 2:24Speaker 2: in the spirit of hip hop, and it's like, okay, I.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Respects I equated to basketball.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I was having a conversation with my nephew right, he
- 2:31Speaker 2: was texting me about it. I said, look, man, when
- 2:34Speaker 2: you play your homie one on one on the court,
- 2:37Speaker 2: are you are you trying to look out for him
- 2:38Speaker 2: because you're a homie. No, you're trying to beat that ass.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And afterwards, y'all wap it up and be like good game.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You either run it back or take your l and
- 2:44Speaker 2: go home. So that's just how I looked at it.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I was like, oh, hip hop is exciting, it's a sport. Yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 2: we need it for the culture. So you know, I
- 2:52Speaker 2: just looked at it as like made the best man win.
- 2:55Speaker 3: What were your thoughts when you saw Cole retract his
- 2:58Speaker 3: his you know, statements and apology. I just wonder because
- 3:01Speaker 3: I actually kind of like, there's no way he actually thought,
- 3:04Speaker 3: like to Pinper, Butterfly wasn't amazing, Like I was like,
- 3:06Speaker 3: he don't even believe what he says, like this is
- 3:08Speaker 3: one of the greatest of hours of all time. But
- 3:10Speaker 3: when he apologized, I was like, you know what, like
- 3:12Speaker 3: I understood where he was coming from because he's been
- 3:14Speaker 3: moving a certain way for so long, you know, But
- 3:17Speaker 3: what were your thoughts.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I try not to speak on these things the whole
- 3:23Speaker 1: month thoughts myself. I mean, but a he's a man.
- 3:28Speaker 1: He made his decision. He made his decision.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But I'm if I'm just speaking from me, if I'm
- 3:34Speaker 2: in that position, I love this the spirit of what
- 3:36Speaker 2: this is and the sport of it, and if it's me,
- 3:39Speaker 2: I'm going homie and not like let's go like, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 2: he approached it how he approached it.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Did you It wasn't funny to you to like hear
- 3:49Speaker 3: people like all of a sudden like you're on to
- 3:52Speaker 3: Pinper Butterfly, which is like, in my opinion, it's.
- 3:55Speaker 1: One of the greatest albums ever.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I actually think it's Kendrick's best album.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's one of my favorite of all time. Even
- 4:01Speaker 2: taking me off of it, I.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Feel and it aged in a way that not a
- 4:05Speaker 3: lot of albums of age, like a lot of people
- 4:07Speaker 3: like during like the BLM protests and stuff like, started
- 4:09Speaker 3: to revisit that and we're like, damn. Kendrick was like
- 4:12Speaker 3: kind of talking about a lot of the shit that's
- 4:13Speaker 3: happening right now, you know, But it was just funny
- 4:16Speaker 3: to see like the album trending. And then Punch tweeted
- 4:19Speaker 3: I thought the Tipper Butterfly was actually a pretty good album.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's I thought about that when when Cole made
- 4:27Speaker 1: his apology, and when he did it, I was like,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I would never approach it when at his discography, but
- 4:33Speaker 1: at the art of Wars, it's just wars war, so
- 4:36Speaker 1: you know.
- 4:37Speaker 2: But it's it's funny to see the landscape of sheep
- 4:42Speaker 2: to me, right, and it's like, okay, because we're in
- 4:44Speaker 2: this battle and he says it's not good that everybody
- 4:48Speaker 2: like we don't think.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's that good.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Get the fuck out of here. Like granted there's some
- 4:52Speaker 2: people that they generally don't like it. That's okay, that's
- 4:55Speaker 2: fine everything not everybody, but like, it's one of the
- 5:00Speaker 2: greatest albums of all times.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I think if you're gonna say anything like to me,
- 5:04Speaker 3: Kendrick's got a flawless discography, it'd be like dis an
- 5:07Speaker 3: Outcasts discography.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely got one of the uns.
- 5:11Speaker 3: That's something you gotta to leave him alone on that.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 3: To me, it's like, that's why I'm really interested, because
- 5:15Speaker 3: I'm like, Drake, I'm not sure what else you got
- 5:17Speaker 3: besides m being short and maybe he had an unfavorable
- 5:19Speaker 3: deal TV back in the day. Because outside of that,
- 5:22Speaker 3: I mean, you know, it's gotten corny. Though the AI
- 5:25Speaker 3: shit was super corny. I thought that shit was lame
- 5:27Speaker 3: as fuck, and then Kanye doing this interview and I'm
- 5:31Speaker 3: just like, like you said, we're here for the main event,
- 5:35Speaker 3: like all the side characters. I want to like, I'm
- 5:37Speaker 3: waiting for this bomb to drop that Kendrick's cooking, and
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'm tired of people acting like we didn't have to
- 5:43Speaker 3: wait twenty nine days for Drake to reply.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is the social media. Everybody thinks
- 5:50Speaker 2: that you have to move at their page. Like if
- 5:52Speaker 2: we told about the spirited hip hop I was. I
- 5:54Speaker 2: was thinking of back when NAS and j were in
- 5:57Speaker 2: battle and Jay put out Takeover or September eleventh, on
- 6:02Speaker 2: two thousand and one. Na's responding on December fourth, his birthday,
- 6:07Speaker 2: like three months later. Three months later, so you know,
- 6:10Speaker 2: and I we know Kendrick. He's intentional about everything, so
- 6:14Speaker 2: you know, I love that he's always continuing to do
- 6:17Speaker 2: him and moving at the pace he has, Like let
- 6:20Speaker 2: the noise die down if anything, please.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Yeah, we waited twenty nine days for Drake to reply.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Just again, twenty nine days. But with that being said,
- 6:27Speaker 3: it is the most excited. Yeah, I'm just excited because
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm like, yo, one day, like I just want I'm
- 6:33Speaker 3: gonna wake up, and Kendrick's because I know he's about
- 6:36Speaker 3: to come crazy.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It's exciting. I'm just it's exciting.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And then Quavo and Chris Brown are going at you
- 6:41Speaker 3: that she's getting a little ugly, but it's just a lot.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I feel like it's like people are seeing how good
- 6:46Speaker 3: it is for business to beef kind of, and they're
- 6:49Speaker 3: all trying to get their little Like.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Kat Williams said it all, didn't he He.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Set it off. He kicked the year off with the
- 6:56Speaker 3: craziest interview ever, and people just been moving like that.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like, yeah, it's getting weird out here.
- 7:02Speaker 3: It's pretty crazy. Talk to me about why it's taken
- 7:06Speaker 3: you four and a half years to drop a new
- 7:07Speaker 3: body of work.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I had a lot to say, and it took
- 7:11Speaker 2: me about four years to get it all out. I
- 7:14Speaker 2: was told, you don't stop recording until you don't have
- 7:16Speaker 2: anything else to say. So I allow myself the grace
- 7:20Speaker 2: and the time to grow in that period, to heal,
- 7:23Speaker 2: in that period, to learn, and you know, to really
- 7:27Speaker 2: figure out all of what I wanted to say and
- 7:29Speaker 2: then what I wanted to share with the world.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that was it, I think too, Like sometimes people
- 7:35Speaker 3: will put out music just because they feel like they
- 7:38Speaker 3: have to or just for the sake of putting out music,
- 7:40Speaker 3: but there's not intention behind it. No, And usually that's
- 7:43Speaker 3: when we get like this microwavable music that people don't
- 7:46Speaker 3: live with, that doesn't age.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It's there for the moment, and which is okay if
- 7:50Speaker 2: that's what you want to do.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm just not that type of artist, right, you know.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I want to put out things that will stand and
- 7:57Speaker 2: test the time, that'll be a blueprint for people to
- 7:59Speaker 2: look back to, that will be a soundtrack for this
- 8:03Speaker 2: life and the next.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know.
- 8:04Speaker 3: So what was your like, where did you draw the
- 8:07Speaker 3: most inspiration for this body of work?
- 8:12Speaker 1: Musically?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Lauryn Hill's Unplugged The honesty, the wrongness of the best
- 8:19Speaker 2: unplugs ever.
- 8:20Speaker 1: That you ain't never lied bro a day of your life.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So that was a big inspiration, probably the biggest, honestly.
- 8:31Speaker 2: That's that's where I really poured from the most. During
- 8:33Speaker 2: the pandemic, I would drive to New York six seven
- 8:36Speaker 2: times and just play that album over and over again.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Other than that, it was just like things I would read.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Untamed by Glennon Dole was a book that I read,
- 8:46Speaker 2: James Allen twenty one books. It just it just really
- 8:48Speaker 2: allowed me to give myself permission to be human, right,
- 8:54Speaker 2: and that's what fed everything else.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Do you feel like because I always when when you're
- 8:59Speaker 3: brought up, you're always brought up as like one of
- 9:01Speaker 3: the elite MC's period, like, regardless of gender. But since
- 9:05Speaker 3: twenty seventeen, since twenty twenty, you know, there has been
- 9:09Speaker 3: like a huge you know, I feel like we used
- 9:12Speaker 3: to have these female MC conversations and it's now just
- 9:14Speaker 3: turned into like ladies are kind of running hip hop now.
- 9:17Speaker 3: In my opinion, they're I mean, all the big hit
- 9:20Speaker 3: records are yeah, women, They're only the only women who
- 9:22Speaker 3: are making like I feel like the women are actually
- 9:24Speaker 3: putting effort into quote unquote records. Yep, you know, and
- 9:28Speaker 3: I feel like now like it's it's been I mean,
- 9:31Speaker 3: the last time I remember it being like this female
- 9:34Speaker 3: dominated or at least so many options out there was
- 9:36Speaker 3: like when it was Eve the Brad, Little King, Foxy Brown, like,
- 9:40Speaker 3: but it's I feel like it's even bigger than that now. No. Yeah, absolutely,
- 9:44Speaker 3: Like do you feel like we're kind of like in
- 9:45Speaker 3: the middle of like a special moment when it terms
- 9:47Speaker 3: to just females running hip hop?
- 9:50Speaker 1: I do. I do running it in this way. I
- 9:53Speaker 1: don't think we've I.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Don't think it's ever happened. No, because even back then
- 9:56Speaker 3: there was jay Z, there was no there was death Row,
- 9:58Speaker 3: there was all.
- 9:58Speaker 2: That at the same time, and and two it was
- 10:01Speaker 2: uh yeah, this is just.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Different and everyone's got their own thing, Like it's it
- 10:07Speaker 3: feels good and you know, for the most part, everyone's
- 10:09Speaker 3: working together for.
- 10:10Speaker 2: The most part, Yeah, which is exciting, and I think
- 10:13Speaker 2: it helps the moment, right, and it's needed. The woman's voice,
- 10:19Speaker 2: her perspective is needed. I love to see in the
- 10:22Speaker 2: mainstream a lot more harmony. But it's it's exciting, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 2: for sure.
- 10:29Speaker 3: You obviously got Erica and I heard the record on
- 10:32Speaker 3: the way over here. Amazing.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, she's she's out here.
- 10:38Speaker 3: She got her own weeds train now to.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yep cookies that and she's got her own perfume that
- 10:45Speaker 2: I think she does. I didn't know about the.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I want to say it's a candle or about she's
- 10:50Speaker 3: got something that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I gotta. I got a box at the house. It
- 10:55Speaker 1: smells amazing, It smells amazing good.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I was like, damn, was that something that you said
- 11:03Speaker 3: to her? Did you guys actually get in?
- 11:06Speaker 1: How did I get that?
- 11:08Speaker 2: She gave it to me as a gift for performing
- 11:11Speaker 2: at her birthday bash fire?
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I have two boxes.
- 11:15Speaker 3: No, no, no, I'm about the record.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I thought we were still the record. Yeah.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I was in Dallas, Texas working with s one and
- 11:26Speaker 2: I did uh. I did two verses. The second verse
- 11:30Speaker 2: was different than what we have now. But at the
- 11:33Speaker 2: end I left the hook open because I knew I
- 11:35Speaker 2: wanted a singer.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And he was like, yo, who you here? Rap? I said,
- 11:38Speaker 1: I only hear bad I'm in Dallas.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So he reached out because I didn't have a contact
- 11:43Speaker 2: at the time, and she said yes, and you know,
- 11:46Speaker 2: we continue to work on it. For about eight more months,
- 11:49Speaker 2: but it was a beautiful time. We never got in
- 11:51Speaker 2: the studio together, but you know.
- 11:52Speaker 1: We text.
- 11:53Speaker 2: She facetimed me and seeing melodies for the hook, she
- 11:56Speaker 2: shared lyrics with me, and it was just a beautiful
- 11:59Speaker 2: process of eating a record and building a friendship. Like
- 12:02Speaker 2: one of the most gifted artists we've ever seen. Creative
- 12:06Speaker 2: style icon but her heart is beautiful, like amazing.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Who all do you have doing production on the album?
- 12:14Speaker 2: We have s one who also serves as an executive
- 12:17Speaker 2: producer Black Odyssey. They also serve as an executive producer
- 12:22Speaker 2: Major seven out of Atlanta.
- 12:24Speaker 3: By the way, people who don't know, there's a guy,
- 12:25Speaker 3: there's a guy in Black Odyssey, not black, Yes, Alejandro Rico. Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 3: I interviewed that, and I was like, what's it like
- 12:33Speaker 3: being a not black guy in Black Well, because technically
- 12:37Speaker 3: Black Odyssey lead, you know the crew, you.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Know, we accept him in our delegation.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but they were amazing to work with. Eric g
- 12:49Speaker 2: of the Soul Council soundtrack of the Soul Council hit boy.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Let me make sure I'm not forgetting anybody. No ninth
- 12:58Speaker 1: beats not on this one.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, we did about two songs. One I had
- 13:06Speaker 2: uh with Mary but I wanted to work on it more.
- 13:11Speaker 3: And six Mary Mary J Yeah, yeah, yeah, you left
- 13:16Speaker 3: the Marry J. Blain's record off the album.
- 13:18Speaker 1: We both wanted to work on it more crazy, you
- 13:21Speaker 1: know we put that out. We wanted to feel right
- 13:23Speaker 1: of course. Yeah, I love Mary. Oh.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I feel like anyone who works with hit boy these
- 13:28Speaker 3: days ends up doing the whole album with him, would you.
- 13:30Speaker 3: I mean, look, we talked about it. I would say
- 13:32Speaker 3: that'd be crazy.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, when Astroids drop, we talked about it. I told
- 13:36Speaker 2: him I would love to. He said the same, So
- 13:38Speaker 2: we'll see how it goes, you know time, but I
- 13:41Speaker 2: would love to.
- 13:42Speaker 3: I just got to thank him for getting NAS in place. Yeah,
- 13:46Speaker 3: I think we've gotten six albums three three Magics, three
- 13:51Speaker 3: Kings Diseases, And then I also think if it weren't
- 13:54Speaker 3: for those six albums, we wouldn't be getting this premiere
- 13:57Speaker 3: NAS album that we're getting on, which is what produced
- 14:00Speaker 3: we've wanted for fucking twenty fucking years years.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Everything has this time.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I know when I heard that the song just dropped
- 14:08Speaker 3: last Friday, and then at the end they're like, yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 3: and the albums I.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Was like, oh my god, Yo, everybody was excited. Is
- 14:15Speaker 1: hip hop is exciting this year?
- 14:17Speaker 3: It is.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It's just it feels the energy feels good. It does
- 14:20Speaker 2: like a different good for sure.
- 14:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I feel like it's like the most. I feel like
- 14:24Speaker 3: last year was kind of like a down year energy
- 14:26Speaker 3: wise for rap. This year, I feel like it's like
- 14:28Speaker 3: because there was like a people questioning, Like I saw
- 14:32Speaker 3: a Carl post something about like the same people who
- 14:35Speaker 3: were saying that hip hop was dying last year need
- 14:36Speaker 3: to give make sure that people know it's alive and
- 14:39Speaker 3: well and running the charts this year.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Let's talk about it.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Honey, going nowhere, I'm curious. You're such a hip hop head.
- 14:46Speaker 3: What are your like if you were to go to
- 14:48Speaker 3: an island then you can only take like three or
- 14:50Speaker 3: four albums with you. What are the albums you're taking
- 14:53Speaker 3: that are hip hop?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Strictly Reasonable Doubt by Jay Z to Butterfly by Kendrick
- 15:00Speaker 1: more strictly hip hop?
- 15:05Speaker 2: The Score by the fujis yes, ooh.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And it Illmatic Happy thirty years thirty years Age is
- 15:14Speaker 1: like fine one absolutely.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great four. I think Reasonable that was
- 15:19Speaker 3: Jayz's best album. I'll stand by that forever.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I go back and forth between it's the top three, Blueprint,
- 15:25Speaker 2: Black and Reasonable, depending on the.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Day I'll give you.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Those are my three.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Those are the three, and I interchange them.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Like to me, it's like reasonable Doubt is like so
- 15:33Speaker 3: fucking crazy, like friend or foe, like yeah.
- 15:36Speaker 1: In my life. No, that's the feeling.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Feeling it, Oh yeah, feeling it, fucking.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Cap with Biggie the Evils.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Yes, the Evils is crazy with the Snoop samples. Reasonable
- 15:47Speaker 3: doubts the one for me.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But twenty two tools, Oh my god, it's.
- 15:51Speaker 3: He the Blueprint or Black albums. Then you know what
- 15:55Speaker 3: I saw. I hated Old the hov though. To me,
- 15:58Speaker 3: the Black or the Blue Blueprint has one song that
- 16:00Speaker 3: I can I skip. It's O Lajo Vito. I can't,
- 16:03Speaker 3: I can't. I just can't do it. It's the Brave
- 16:05Speaker 3: Heart Party of that album. Do you remember Brave Heart
- 16:07Speaker 3: Party on Stematic? Oh so Stillmatic was a perfect album,
- 16:12Speaker 3: but there was a song called Brave Heart Party with
- 16:14Speaker 3: Mary J. Blige, and it's one of the worst rap
- 16:16Speaker 3: songs ever created. It's so bad that when they reissued
- 16:21Speaker 3: the album they took it off.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I feel like you always give me a moment where
- 16:25Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 16:27Speaker 3: No, NAS knows, it's terrible. Listen, if you were to
- 16:30Speaker 3: go to the store right now and buy like a
- 16:32Speaker 3: stealmatic that's been pressed in the last fifteen years, Brave
- 16:35Speaker 3: Heart Party is not on. Do you remember when jay
- 16:40Speaker 3: Z did the Blueprint two point one?
- 16:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and because the Blueprint too had some shit on it,
- 16:45Speaker 4: but it also had some shit on it so much
- 16:48Speaker 4: so that they were like, let's do the blue point
- 16:50Speaker 4: two point one and just put all the good shit
- 16:52Speaker 4: on one album.
- 16:53Speaker 3: That's what NAS had to do with Brave Heart Party.
- 16:55Speaker 3: He knows it's a bad song.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I love you so much.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Whenever I interviewed Nows, I specifically want to bring that up, Like, hey,
- 17:03Speaker 3: so who I mean interviewed him when I was like
- 17:08Speaker 3: fucking nineteen and I brought him a box of ship
- 17:11Speaker 3: to autograph.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Was that one of them?
- 17:13Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:14Speaker 1: Fire, that's fire?
- 17:15Speaker 5: Okay, Yeah, I brought him like I was like I
- 17:17Speaker 5: saw that and I was like, oh, bottom stuff.
- 17:19Speaker 3: And I was like, hey, dude, like if you could
- 17:21Speaker 3: interview all the sign all this ship, it'd be great.
- 17:25Speaker 3: If you don't want to, I get it, but this
- 17:27Speaker 3: is like the biggest moment of my life.
- 17:29Speaker 1: That's love.
- 17:30Speaker 3: You signed it all. I asked him what happened? Do
- 17:33Speaker 3: you know what my main question was because I only
- 17:34Speaker 3: got the interview like ten minutes, but it was like Yo,
- 17:36Speaker 3: Win's Lost Tapes two coming.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Out and Lost Tapes was a.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Joint, probably my third favorite NAS album.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Up there, It's up there.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Then Lost Tapes two came and it was I should
- 17:48Speaker 3: have stood, stayed, lost shouts and nots. Anyway, who else
- 17:55Speaker 3: is on this album?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Okay?
- 17:58Speaker 2: We talked about Eric Abad have Little Wayne, Oh yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 2: Nico brim alex Issley Dixon, Baby Tape, and Banaving hold on.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Let me make sure I'm not forgetting anybody.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I think I think?
- 18:17Speaker 2: I said, Oh, kez Namdi Knew an artist from Jamaica, bb.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Fire, That's it. I got everybody Wayne.
- 18:28Speaker 2: So I've always been a fan since I was thirteen
- 18:30Speaker 2: during the pandemic. I've been working with bel Air here
- 18:33Speaker 2: and there.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But you know the Bomboo.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so Brett the guy, Yeah that's Brett good good folk.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But I think Maine or Brett one of them told
- 18:46Speaker 2: me that uh Wayne wanted me to do a song
- 18:49Speaker 2: for Bomboo at the time, and it never materialized, but
- 18:53Speaker 2: I was like, okay, he's tapped in. So when we
- 18:56Speaker 2: started doing the record and I knew I wanted to
- 18:58Speaker 2: do it with him, I I've been talking to Mac
- 19:01Speaker 2: for a little bit, so I just hit Mac.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, I got this record.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I want to see h Wayne, see if he'll get
- 19:06Speaker 2: on it.
- 19:07Speaker 1: He connected us. Uh, you know, we were texting, playing
- 19:11Speaker 1: the record, send him the record. He did it in
- 19:13Speaker 1: like a week.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Oh wow, yeah, like fast like so I appreciate his
- 19:17Speaker 2: grace and just extending his services.
- 19:19Speaker 1: But that was it, you know. And I would tap
- 19:21Speaker 1: in every now and again just to check in. Happy
- 19:23Speaker 1: Father's Day.
- 19:23Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, he's been a god send. He made
- 19:29Speaker 2: the business easy song.
- 19:31Speaker 3: I feel like we underappreciate Little Wayne somehow, now we do.
- 19:34Speaker 1: He's he's one and two.
- 19:38Speaker 3: He's one of your one or two.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's Jay, but he like right there.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I got him liking around nine. I mean my top
- 19:45Speaker 3: ten is very like it's like super fucking I got
- 19:48Speaker 3: ghost face above a little wad like I'm not I know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: I got like a super like. I always say, like
- 19:55Speaker 3: Kendrick's top five all time because if we if people
- 20:00Speaker 3: put Biggie in their top one or two off of
- 20:03Speaker 3: two albums. Oh yeah, you have to put Kendrick in
- 20:07Speaker 3: your top five off of his discography because his discography is.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Albums, EPs, impact, mixtapes, all of it. Yeah, and then
- 20:17Speaker 5: like one and two is to me, it's Jay and
- 20:19Speaker 5: and NAS and then I could just like swap shit around.
- 20:23Speaker 5: It just becomes after like one and two are the
- 20:25Speaker 5: only two that like don't move for me. Ever, it's
- 20:26Speaker 5: jay Z, it'sn and it is how you feelings.
- 20:29Speaker 3: However, I'm feeling it for the day. You know, Kendrick's
- 20:32Speaker 3: up there. I say, if Drake comes away from this
- 20:34Speaker 3: whole thing on top mm hmm. I finally gotta stop
- 20:40Speaker 3: hating on Drake if he can come out of now.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I thought the AI thing was one of the corniest
- 20:48Speaker 3: things I've ever seen a rapper do in my entire life.
- 20:50Speaker 3: You did, I thought it was terrible because I'm sure
- 20:53Speaker 3: Snoop didn't go sign that fucking using Tupac's voice. Come
- 20:55Speaker 3: on anyway, Nonetheless, if he can come out from every
- 21:00Speaker 3: you want diss in it the weekend the biggest artist
- 21:05Speaker 3: in the world on Spotify number If you look at
- 21:09Speaker 3: the ranking of the Weekend is number one. You got
- 21:12Speaker 3: the Weekend dissing you, bro, if you got the twenty
- 21:15Speaker 3: verse one. He posted that ship with a kill bill
- 21:19Speaker 3: and he comes out on top. I gotta, I just gotta.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I hate to say it, but he might be up there, bro,
- 21:27Speaker 3: he might be.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The I mean, the boy can rap. That's what makes
- 21:29Speaker 1: this so exciting.
- 21:30Speaker 3: He can wrap his ass off. And he's the biggest,
- 21:34Speaker 3: probably the biggest rapper ever commercially successful. Yeah, especially for
- 21:40Speaker 3: the run. Yeah yeah, yeah, you know, like Wayne had
- 21:44Speaker 3: like that three year run that was fucking crazy. Like uh,
- 21:47Speaker 3: Eminem had like h what probably five or six years
- 21:49Speaker 3: where he was like the biggest shit ever. But Drake's like,
- 21:52Speaker 3: oh nine to now, never seen it. With that being said, he.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Sings too, though, So he sings too. That's good.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it helps, it helps, It help does help. I
- 22:04Speaker 3: ain't fucking singing, jay Z ain't singing, thank god, I
- 22:09Speaker 3: ain't need but I need Drake to give me a
- 22:14Speaker 3: rewind or a fucking meet the parents, or I need
- 22:18Speaker 3: something like that. We ain't got one of those. But
- 22:20Speaker 3: if it comes out on top, I don't listen to me.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Kendrick Mars Indeed, the boogie man. I think, I think
- 22:27Speaker 3: I just can't wait man shots at k dot. I'm
- 22:29Speaker 3: super biased in this whole thing.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So likewise, but it is what it is. I mean,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I know the calib of human we talk when.
- 22:36Speaker 3: You So when you got nominated for like hip Hop
- 22:40Speaker 3: Album of the Year, that was a big deal and
- 22:43Speaker 3: I kind of feel like that kind of kicked off
- 22:46Speaker 3: like a wave of the Grammy is at least semi
- 22:49Speaker 3: getting some of the nominees, right, you know, a few
- 22:53Speaker 3: years later, I know pusha T got nominated and Royster
- 22:56Speaker 3: five nine got nominated. Actually think it was the next year.
- 22:59Speaker 1: The process was different, right, That was a.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Year after Right, it was twenty eighteen because Daytona came
- 23:04Speaker 3: out on twenty eighteen.
- 23:05Speaker 2: So there was a time when the Grammys were trying
- 23:09Speaker 2: to get it right, especially for hip hop. So they
- 23:11Speaker 2: created these committees for all genres. And the way the
- 23:14Speaker 2: Grammys works is you have to be a member of
- 23:17Speaker 2: the voting committee, which means you have to be nominated
- 23:20Speaker 2: and have one pasi bla. Everybody, no matter what genre
- 23:25Speaker 2: you and everybody who's in the voting committee gets to vote.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So a lot of times if you're a country artist
- 23:32Speaker 2: and maybe you're not really into.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Hip hop, it's gonna vote name recognition.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Right, So to balance that out, they created these committees
- 23:40Speaker 2: of trusted individuals from each genre and that culture. Country
- 23:43Speaker 2: had theirs, pop had, there's R and B. Hip hop
- 23:45Speaker 2: had it's trusted committee, and you would get the top whatever,
- 23:52Speaker 2: and you would go through the list and if you
- 23:53Speaker 2: felt like there was somebody that needed to be in
- 23:55Speaker 2: there that wasn't represented, you got to go through a
- 23:58Speaker 2: process of listening to that record to get it, going
- 24:01Speaker 2: through it, and voting it in because you were of
- 24:05Speaker 2: the community. So that's how you get a Voice to
- 24:07Speaker 2: five non nomina NATed, That's how you get a nipsy
- 24:10Speaker 2: nominaefraidh exactly. That was the balance in the checks and
- 24:14Speaker 2: balance the system to make sure this is not just
- 24:16Speaker 2: a popularity contest that hip hop.
- 24:18Speaker 3: That makes sense why I'm saying, I mean shot to
- 24:20Speaker 3: my boy macl my Love, but that would make sense
- 24:22Speaker 3: why he won over Kendrick that year.
- 24:25Speaker 1: It's just popularity name recogniztion.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Yeah, because like this year, I feel like they knocked
- 24:29Speaker 3: it out the park with Killer Mike. I'm like, of course,
- 24:32Speaker 3: Killer Mike had the best rap album of the year.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I don't even think it was It wasn't even I
- 24:35Speaker 3: didn't think it was close.
- 24:36Speaker 1: It wasn't even close.
- 24:37Speaker 2: It was solid and they got a ride and they
- 24:40Speaker 2: got it right. Yeah, So that's exciting to see one hundred.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I was.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I was super stoked to see that. But I wonder, like,
- 24:47Speaker 3: when you get a taste of that, are you like,
- 24:50Speaker 3: do you when you create now? Do you create with
- 24:52Speaker 3: the Grammys in mind?
- 24:53Speaker 1: Are you super? Not anymore? Nothing in mind? No Grammys,
- 24:58Speaker 1: no BT Awards, no.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Billboard, which I've never really been high on anymore, no
- 25:04Speaker 2: platinum plats.
- 25:05Speaker 1: This one, I was like, you know, I'm tired of.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Chasing these accolades.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and these measurements, and sometimes some of it is
- 25:12Speaker 2: real and some oftimes it's not.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Like you say, something is a popularity.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So hey, I'm gonna throw you my phone. Yeap, put
- 25:18Speaker 3: it on the white shot. I think this is the
- 25:19Speaker 3: guy who's coming to power wash out signs, hold on,
- 25:26Speaker 3: just just go and put on the white chot. Sorry,
- 25:30Speaker 3: this guy's doing this painting tomorrow.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, gotta get this wash Yeah you want miss that.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Tell him if he could come tonight. He needs to
- 25:37Speaker 3: come tonight. So that because I always wonder, like, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 3: like when people I always feel like when people on
- 25:44Speaker 3: the other side of the spectrum, like when people have
- 25:46Speaker 3: like certain commercial success where they feel like they have
- 25:49Speaker 3: to go in and they have to create like a
- 25:50Speaker 3: radio record or like a hit record, it always comes
- 25:53Speaker 3: off like the forest, and I feel like that can
- 25:55Speaker 3: happen on the other side where you're like, we gotta
- 25:58Speaker 3: make this album for the Grammys.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't want to do that, but this one
- 26:02Speaker 2: is super intentional. I want to have a connection with people.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I want them to get to know me better. That
- 26:07Speaker 2: was my only only goal. You know, some people can
- 26:10Speaker 2: do that, they they.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Do it well. Drake does it well for sure.
- 26:14Speaker 5: You know.
- 26:15Speaker 1: My space and how I create is different.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, if it comes, it comes, but it
- 26:20Speaker 2: has to come naturally, Like I don't want to chase chase.
- 26:23Speaker 3: It, you know, do you uh? Because somebody like yourself,
- 26:29Speaker 3: I feel like it's like obviously criminally slept on underrated
- 26:31Speaker 3: if you will, when we talk about just like the
- 26:34Speaker 3: upper echelon of hip hop artists in the game, is
- 26:37Speaker 3: that something that bothers you anymore? Being underrated or being
- 26:40Speaker 3: slept on? No? Did it ever it did to you,
- 26:44Speaker 3: It did.
- 26:44Speaker 1: It did a lot. You know, you you compare yourself,
- 26:49Speaker 1: you use that as a measure of its success. You're like,
- 26:52Speaker 1: what's wrong with me? What am I missing? Where do
- 26:54Speaker 1: I fit in? Why is it? Why aren't I connecting?
- 26:57Speaker 1: And translated? Now it's just like I don't don't really
- 27:00Speaker 1: care anymore.
- 27:01Speaker 3: It's easy to like look across the way and see
- 27:04Speaker 3: what everyone else is doing and then let let that
- 27:06Speaker 3: kind of affect your energy or let that affect your process.
- 27:10Speaker 3: But I feel like it's like you gotta just kind
- 27:12Speaker 3: of stay stay down, like you do what you do
- 27:14Speaker 3: and like people love you for it.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm content with that. My place is my place.
- 27:20Speaker 3: You know.
- 27:21Speaker 2: For whatever reason this is, it goes its way from
- 27:23Speaker 2: me inside, it goes I receive it.
- 27:25Speaker 3: How are you? How hip are you to like, like,
- 27:29Speaker 3: do you still try to like discover new.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Artists all the time? Yeah, as much as I can.
- 27:35Speaker 2: You know, when I'm creating, I don't listen to a
- 27:37Speaker 2: lot of music, but if I fall into it, I'm
- 27:40Speaker 2: definitely tapped in all the time.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Have you heard of this girl famsin that name Sounds.
- 27:45Speaker 3: She's been going super viral with her firstyle, she's crazy.
- 27:48Speaker 1: What she looked like.
- 27:49Speaker 3: She's like light skinturly hair.
- 27:52Speaker 2: She did the Badu flip. She's dope, She's super dope,
- 27:56Speaker 2: super dope. I want to say I follow her.
- 27:58Speaker 3: She's hardest.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's crazy. Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 3: I was like, what I asked you about it?
- 28:03Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, I already yeah, already, No, I
- 28:06Speaker 1: saw it. I was like, oh, she cold?
- 28:09Speaker 3: Are you already? Even like, so album comes out, you
- 28:12Speaker 3: get through the process of working the album. How much
- 28:15Speaker 3: time do you take before you even start thinking about
- 28:18Speaker 3: getting back in.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Man, everyone is different the other ones. I would take
- 28:22Speaker 2: like two months and I'm right back in. I finished
- 28:25Speaker 2: this album completely in August. I've probably been in the
- 28:29Speaker 2: studio once or twice.
- 28:31Speaker 3: So for you, it's like, because you know there's some
- 28:34Speaker 3: people who are like, yeo, no matter why I'm recording,
- 28:36Speaker 3: I got thousands of songs for you, it's like, like
- 28:38Speaker 3: you said, it's about intentions. So it's like you get
- 28:40Speaker 3: to the end of that chapter, breathe a little, let's
- 28:43Speaker 3: get the album out. Yeah, time for yourself, get reinspired.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Yep, that's it.
- 28:48Speaker 2: I'm just like I've told myself, even though if I'm
- 28:52Speaker 2: not actively in the studio on the mic recording writing.
- 28:55Speaker 2: I'm still creating right the conversations I have, the things
- 28:58Speaker 2: I see, like my brain is all it never turns off.
- 29:02Speaker 2: But I'm just keeping accounting record when the time comes.
- 29:05Speaker 2: It's like I got the spark now, yeah, but I'll
- 29:10Speaker 2: every day every now and again.
- 29:11Speaker 3: We got to get the sparks. So you and hip
- 29:13Speaker 3: Boy can do au ep.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Oh No, we're gonna get it. There's a lot I
- 29:16Speaker 1: want to do with a lot of people.
- 29:17Speaker 3: So I think it's human hip Boy. You gotta do
- 29:20Speaker 3: the hip boy album. That's gonna be crazy. Yeah.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:23Speaker 3: He's got his room and childice. You just go over
- 29:24Speaker 3: there with him, a big hit big he will be
- 29:27Speaker 3: doing push ups in the corner, pull up ball. I
- 29:34Speaker 3: love him anyway. So the album comes out May seventeenth.
- 29:37Speaker 3: What's the name of the album?
- 29:38Speaker 1: Please Don't Cry?
- 29:39Speaker 3: Please Don't Cry? Why that title? Are we gonna cry
- 29:42Speaker 3: when we listen?
- 29:43Speaker 1: You may?
- 29:44Speaker 2: You know if it touches you, it's really about just
- 29:45Speaker 2: allowing yourself to be human. You know it's ironic and
- 29:48Speaker 2: it's like please don't cry with the whole album is
- 29:50Speaker 2: like yo, no pheel be vulnerable, Be vulnerable. Cry when
- 29:54Speaker 2: you sad, cry when you're mad, cry when you're happy,
- 29:56Speaker 2: Cry because sh it's so fucking funny. Your stomach is
- 29:58Speaker 2: a nuts like just be you know.
- 30:02Speaker 1: That's what it says.
- 30:03Speaker 3: The seventeenth go support. Appreciate you coming.
- 30:07Speaker 1: By, thank you, looking forward to hearing that album.
- 30:10Speaker 2: See you.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I hope you hope you dig it.
- 30:12Speaker 3: She likes hey man shout out to Rhapsody. Man, we
- 30:14Speaker 3: like well cooked meals. A DJ heads is on the
- 30:16Speaker 3: West Coast.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Yeah, her is the full the full plate.
- 30:19Speaker 3: There it is. I appreciate you for coming through.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Thank you, Yes Booth, I love you man
- 30:25Speaker 3: Fire, this is great
