- 0:00Alright, if you guys would, I'm going to read, this is not from the Westminster Confession,
- 0:20this is just the issue of one of the solas.
- 0:25So we know there's five solas.
- 0:27This is Sola Scriptura, and so I'm going to read that question and you're going to read
- 0:30the answer.
- 0:32What is the doctrine of Sola Scriptura?
- 0:34Sola Scriptura means that the Bible is written about the Lord God, and that all church traditions
- 0:43and interpretations are subject to correction by the scriptures, and the scriptures alone
- 0:50may be final, perfect, and faithless.
- 0:53Nice.
- 0:54That's a great definition.
- 0:56So, get to know these things.
- 1:00These are some very important truths that we carry with us, and I can't help but think
- 1:07as we continue to see things deteriorate, which has been deteriorating for a while now,
- 1:17how many will fall away from that because they're not grounded in the mature faith of
- 1:23Christ.
- 1:24That's really what we're going to be dealing with here.
- 1:26When we're stuck in the milk, you really can't deal with the meat, and so it's important
- 1:33that we move from milk to meat.
- 1:34So these are going to be some very, three very important principles that we'll deal
- 1:37with, some truth statements that will go along with that, and you know we go verse by verse
- 1:44and word for word, and I hope you grasp the importance of this chapter.
- 1:49The letter to the Hebrews is a difficult letter.
- 1:52It's not an easy letter.
- 1:57It's something that I think we need to spend more time in in these difficult letters because
- 2:04it really grows and challenges the faith.
- 2:06So let's pray, and let's dig in.
- 2:08Father, I want to thank you so much for your goodness and faithfulness.
- 2:12You are holy, righteous, sovereign, and true, Lord, that there is nothing in all of creation
- 2:20that your sovereignty and your providential hand is not in, and all things are done for
- 2:28your glory and for your name to be proclaimed throughout all of creation that you are God
- 2:35and God alone, and that you in the three persons of who you are, Father, Son, and Spirit, have
- 2:43accomplished salvation for man, that we may be with you forever, and that you have for
- 2:49all eternity have placed us in Christ, and that we are his and we will be with him as
- 2:59he reigns as king forever over all the things that you have placed in his authority.
- 3:05So Lord, guide us as we spend time in your word.
- 3:09I pray that the full counsel of your word is spoken and that we learn some very important
- 3:13truths of who you are as God and the importance of understanding our practice of maturity.
- 3:21Lord, we praise you and we thank you in Jesus' name, amen.
- 3:24So we want to read chapter 5 verse 11, and we're going to go right in to verse 6.
- 3:30It says, about this, we have much to say.
- 3:34About what?
- 3:35Salvation.
- 3:36We know that in verse 7 through 8.
- 3:38He's talking about salvation, specifically in verse 9.
- 3:44And he says, so about this salvation, we have much to say.
- 3:47And it's hard to explain since you have become doll of hearing.
- 3:53It's an interesting term he uses here, doll of hearing.
- 3:57For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic
- 4:04principles of the oracles of God.
- 4:07You need milk, not solid food.
- 4:11For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness since he is a
- 4:18child, but solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment
- 4:26trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
- 4:32That's important.
- 4:34So when we get into chapter 6, as we're going to get into next, I want you to understand
- 4:39something.
- 4:40You cannot discern real good from evil if you don't know the word.
- 4:48You have to know it.
- 4:50You've got to spend time in it.
- 4:52And so verse 1 says, therefore, because he said all this, therefore is therefore, therefore.
- 5:00It sounds kind of funny.
- 5:04That's why it's there, for.
- 5:07Just trying to be more funny.
- 5:08It's not working.
- 5:09Let us, thank you, whoever laughed for me, appreciate it.
- 5:13Let us therefore leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying
- 5:21again a foundation of repentance from dead works or of faith toward God and of instruction
- 5:29about washings, the laying on of the hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal
- 5:34judgment.
- 5:35So there is this list that he says are elementary truths.
- 5:40In other words, what he's saying here is these things you should be absolutely convinced
- 5:46of.
- 5:47This should not be something you're going back to because you need to learn something
- 5:52new.
- 5:54These should be settled.
- 5:56These are doctrines within the Christian faith that it's a done deal.
- 6:00You move on and you grow in faith.
- 6:03You grow in the full stature of Christ.
- 6:05And so principle number one, basic truths of the Christian faith are to be known and
- 6:11understood, not repeated over and over again for the believer as if it is needed to ensure
- 6:20your faith.
- 6:21In other words, I keep going back to it because I am not sure if I know.
- 6:28If you're not sure that you know, you have to question if you really know.
- 6:34These are things that we should not be sitting down questioning.
- 6:37They're basic understandings of facts for the believer.
- 6:43How do we know this?
- 6:44Every believer must press or move to a deeper understanding of Christ.
- 6:49I like the word press better than move.
- 6:52We must press to a deeper understanding of Christ.
- 6:56Here's the scriptural proof of that.
- 6:59Here's the context with context and here's the precept for precept.
- 7:03Ephesians 4.13, until we attain the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son
- 7:09of God to mature manhood to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
- 7:17In other words, what God has for you is to be like his son.
- 7:22That is it.
- 7:23Not to be stuck crawling as spiritual infants, spiritual newborns.
- 7:30Should be beyond this stuff.
- 7:32And so, Paul clarifies and I believe this is Paul who wrote Hebrews, but some would
- 7:38argue.
- 7:39Therefore, let us leave.
- 7:41Now this word leave is not meaning that we completely abandon.
- 7:47It's not that kind of an abandonment.
- 7:49It's not even like a departure.
- 7:52It's like, you know when you grow up, you don't go back to crawling.
- 7:58I could clarify this a little bit better in first service.
- 8:02I don't want to crawl again.
- 8:03One, I'm too old and my knees get bruised.
- 8:09So we don't go back to crawling.
- 8:11Once you learn to walk, you keep walking and eventually you run.
- 8:15Now I know the older you get, you end up back in the same position.
- 8:19I get it.
- 8:20You're like, speak for yourself, Pastor Joe.
- 8:25So he says, let us now go back to the elementary doctrine of Christ.
- 8:31Elementary the simple.
- 8:33These doctrines that are listed here.
- 8:36And he gives a really good clarifying list of what these elementary doctrines are.
- 8:41But he says, and we must leave, but go press on to maturity.
- 8:49We must work it out.
- 8:51We must drive ourselves to know him more.
- 8:56And he gives this list at this point.
- 8:58Let us leave elementary doctrines, move to maturity, not laying again a foundation of
- 9:05repentance.
- 9:06This word foundation is the understanding of beginnings.
- 9:11The beginnings of things, the first principles, the system of truth.
- 9:16What is the system of truth?
- 9:17We are sinners and you must repent and believe the gospel.
- 9:23That's what Jesus says, right?
- 9:26Mark 1 15, pretty simple.
- 9:28That's what he's saying here.
- 9:30So let's not go back to the first principles of repentance.
- 9:34What are the first principles of repentance?
- 9:37I'm a sinner.
- 9:40You know, you keep going back to repent because you think you aren't saved.
- 9:45You keep going back to thinking you've lost something that God can't keep.
- 9:51There are many churches in our day today that keep pushing to this idea that you have to
- 9:57repent to come to faith all the time.
- 10:01Like as if the first time you truly repented and were truly changed wasn't strong enough.
- 10:07So he deals with this issue of foundation, this system of truth, of repentance.
- 10:13The word repentance here is matronia or matronia, the change of mind.
- 10:20I want you to think about that.
- 10:24Don't go back to the simple first principles of the changing of your mind.
- 10:31From what?
- 10:33Changing your mind from dead works.
- 10:34This word dead works means a life lived destitute of power, inactive, inoperative and faithless.
- 10:43What happens to dead people?
- 10:45Their brains are what?
- 10:47Inoperative.
- 10:48They're dead.
- 10:49They're fruitless.
- 10:50They, they do nothing.
- 10:52Let's not go back to this foundation of repentance which was from a life that was destitute of
- 11:00power.
- 11:03And then he says end of faith toward God.
- 11:06This word faith toward God means the conviction that God exists and is creator of all things,
- 11:13the provider and bestower of eternal salvation.
- 11:16I mean how many times do we have to be convinced that God is the creator of all things?
- 11:23Do you want to know why we're struggling with this idea here?
- 11:27I mean this idea has crept into the church.
- 11:29If you guys ever listen to Ken Ham, Ken Ham fights against this ideology of creationism
- 11:38slash evolutionary theory.
- 11:42This understanding that God spoke and over time it evolved to be what it is today.
- 11:50That's not the understanding here.
- 11:53It's not, it's not even that God spoke and bang.
- 11:57There it is.
- 11:59I even fight against that idea.
- 12:02That God spoke and banged it.
- 12:04There it is.
- 12:05That's a simple very foolish way to think about it.
- 12:08When God spoke every detail was intentional.
- 12:13Every detail has his signature on it.
- 12:16Every detail has his fingerprint.
- 12:18When he spoke he spoke for the glory of himself.
- 12:22So the very atom that is created was intentionally created.
- 12:27It wasn't like I'm going to create it.
- 12:29Bang there it is.
- 12:31He lovingly brought it into existence.
- 12:34It's a lot more than that stuff.
- 12:38We simplify God to a thing that we can mold.
- 12:43But when you think about God and his intentionality and everything he does you can't help but
- 12:48think he's much bigger and stronger than that.
- 12:53This is an important truth because if he is the creator of all things and the provider
- 12:56and bestower of eternal salvation and he gives it then he has to be the one to keep it.
- 13:03And we deal with this issue.
- 13:05And then he says after this verse two end of instruction about washings.
- 13:10This word washings is the word baptismo and it means baptism.
- 13:15Let us not go back to baptism.
- 13:19In other words when you are baptized you're baptized out of an heart of obedience towards
- 13:23Christ and that your baptismism is a proclamation of what Christ had done on the cross and that
- 13:29you yourself have been crucified with Christ yet I know that only you live but Christ lives
- 13:34in me.
- 13:36During Bible study today we actually went through this in Romans 6 and this clarifies
- 13:45a little bit more.
- 13:48This truth of not returning back to the issue of baptisms like baptisms can make you right.
- 13:55Can you imagine how many times you come to Christ you walk away from the faith because
- 14:00of some really bad teaching because you sin.
- 14:06Then you have to go back in repentance again.
- 14:09You have to ask for forgiveness again.
- 14:12Christ has to be crucified again.
- 14:14Then you have to go to baptism again.
- 14:18That's what the writer is saying here.
- 14:20Look what it says in chapter 6 verse 1.
- 14:25What shall we say then?
- 14:26Are we to continue in sin that grace may bound?
- 14:30By no means.
- 14:31How can we who died to sin still live in it?
- 14:36Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into
- 14:43his death and we were buried with we were buried therefore with him by baptism into
- 14:49death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead we too may walk in newness of
- 14:54life?
- 14:57I mean think about that.
- 15:00Is the work of Christ on the cross enough?
- 15:04And if it is why do we continue in the elementary doctrines of Christ?
- 15:09We should be beyond this and that's what the writer is saying here.
- 15:13And then he says the laying on of hands because you know the next step of every believer is
- 15:20one they act in obedience get baptized.
- 15:23They are associated with the crucifixion and death and resurrection of Christ through baptism.
- 15:29It's a proclamation of the gospel and then they come they're part of the family.
- 15:33And the family brings them and lays hands on them and asks God's blessing to be given
- 15:39to them in ceremony.
- 15:41That's what the laying on of hands means.
- 15:43And for those who are called to position of leadership many times as ordination.
- 15:49Either way do we go back to the laying on of hands?
- 15:55Because we think that it's not good enough that the work of Christ isn't good enough?
- 16:01Do we go back to the resurrection of the dead?
- 16:03Do we have to do we have to argue over the fact that Christ raised from the dead?
- 16:11If he didn't raise from the dead we might as well just go home because it's a waste
- 16:14of time.
- 16:15Should we go back to the resurrection of the dead?
- 16:19And should we go to eternal judgment?
- 16:21Should we go back to the reality that God will judge everyone?
- 16:29And the writer says here and this we will do if God permits.
- 16:36So elementary truths principle number two.
- 16:41The doctrines of renewal, renewal meaning renewing the mind continually and the doctrine
- 16:48of regeneration meaning to make alive that which was dead are only done by the power
- 16:55and the work of the spirit.
- 16:58An impossibility for anything that the spirit does to be undone.
- 17:02That's the idea here.
- 17:04It is impossible to be made alive in Christ to be brought back to death and corruption
- 17:11and to have our minds changed and continually renewed in the truth to return to knowing
- 17:17nothing of his goodness.
- 17:19Now I want you to get that.
- 17:22If we are radically changed, made completely brand new by the power of the Holy Spirit
- 17:28and regenerated, made alive a new creature in order for us to have to go back to repentance
- 17:37means we would have to become back what we were.
- 17:42We have to become the old creature.
- 17:46So is that what we're saying?
- 17:48That the work of Christ isn't enough to keep us from being the old creature?
- 17:54My argument is there are denominations that teach that.
- 18:01Eternal security is real.
- 18:03I am secure eternally in Christ forever, his forever.
- 18:08I am in him.
- 18:09All that the father has given me I will not lose.
- 18:14And he says if we are in him, he is in the father.
- 18:18That's like a double lockdown.
- 18:21You can't get any more lockdown than that.
- 18:27And so what happens to many, to our charismatic friends is they miss out.
- 18:35They miss out on the sureness of knowing Christ.
- 18:39And so here it is.
- 18:43Verse four through six.
- 18:44For it is impossible.
- 18:47What's impossible mean?
- 18:49Not possible.
- 18:50All right.
- 18:51I'll say it in good old, you know, street language ain't gonna happen.
- 18:58And ain't is a word because it's in the Webster's dictionary.
- 19:03Okay.
- 19:05For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened.
- 19:11Now who are those?
- 19:13Us.
- 19:15The believer.
- 19:18So it's impossible concerning the believers who have once came to the saving knowledge.
- 19:25That's what the word enlightenment here means.
- 19:27The saving knowledge of Christ who us who have tasted experience the heavenly gift,
- 19:35the heavenly gift, eternal life.
- 19:39Us who have shared partook in the Holy Spirit and have experienced tasted the goodness of
- 19:49the word of God and the powers of the age to come to and then having to fall away from
- 19:59all that to be restored, to restore them again to repentance.
- 20:05It's an impossibility.
- 20:07Here's what I mean.
- 20:10When the Holy Spirit comes upon the heart and he starts the process of regeneration
- 20:15in their lives, which is instantaneous, his illumination of the truth of the gospel so
- 20:22enters the mind in the heart of man that he's impactfully changed forever.
- 20:26He is literally changed.
- 20:29Okay.
- 20:30He is waken from the dead, made alive in Christ.
- 20:34His mind is completely changed.
- 20:36He recognizes the creator of all things, the one who bestows salvation.
- 20:40He in response to that repents of his sin and say, Jesus is my Lord and savior.
- 20:45I am not going to live this life anymore because of the work of God in his heart.
- 20:49He then after that in obedience to him comes to repentance.
- 20:54Do you see the process?
- 20:57In his repentance, he baptizes out of obedience to him is recognized to be like Christ in
- 21:02crucifixion, being buried and resurrected into newness of life.
- 21:09The Holy Spirit, if our sin was powerful enough to rip us from his hand, the Holy Spirit would
- 21:17then have to reconvert us back to what we were and then we'd have to start the whole
- 21:22process over again.
- 21:23Now I want you to think about that because if we have to go through all that process
- 21:30in order for us to be deconverted, to be reconverted, there's one more part of the process that
- 21:36has to happen in order to make it right.
- 21:40Because without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin.
- 21:44And then what they're going to say is, well, the Bible says Jesus's blood is once for all.
- 21:48Oh really?
- 21:49If it was once for all, then how come it's not strong enough to keep?
- 21:53It's strong enough to once for all, but it's not strong enough to keep you.
- 21:57So what does that mean?
- 21:58He has to be crucified all over again and that's exactly what the writer says here.
- 22:03If you have to deconvert the whole thing, if you have to change everything back to what
- 22:07it was originally, then guess who has to come and die again?
- 22:11And that's exactly what he says.
- 22:13For it is impossible in the case of those who have been enlightened, who have come to
- 22:18the saving knowledge of Christ, who have tasted and experienced the heavenly gift of eternal
- 22:22life and have shared and partook in the Holy Spirit, to have tasted and experienced the
- 22:27goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away
- 22:33to restore them again to repentance since they are crucifying once again the Son of
- 22:40God to their own open shame, to their own harm.
- 22:48And then you're holding him up to contempt.
- 22:51Now I want you to understand that.
- 22:53Every time you claim that Jesus isn't good enough to keep you, guess what you're doing?
- 22:58Do you forget the shame that he experienced on your behalf?
- 23:03Do you forget the reality of him being crucified without clothing, being beaten to the point
- 23:10that he was unrecognizable?
- 23:12Are you willing to put him through that again?
- 23:14Of course you are, because your God's not big enough to keep you.
- 23:18See, your salvation is based upon your dead works.
- 23:23That's what the writer's saying here.
- 23:26So some very important things I think we need to mention here concerning the powers of the
- 23:32age to come.
- 23:33I did some deeper research on this particular statement.
- 23:37It's like, what powers of the age to come?
- 23:39What is he talking about?
- 23:41Well specifically he's talking about what's to come for the believer.
- 23:46What are we believing in?
- 23:47The goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come.
- 23:52We experience God's word and we also are going to experience what's to come.
- 23:57What's to come for us?
- 24:00Eternity with Jesus.
- 24:02What else is to come?
- 24:04The ultimate rain on the earth with him forever.
- 24:06He takes the earth, he refines it in fire and behold, out of the heavens come a new
- 24:11heaven and a new earth.
- 24:13Revelation 21.
- 24:14Isn't that the point?
- 24:16What's our hope?
- 24:17Our hope is that we get to reign with him forever.
- 24:19We are his forever.
- 24:20That's the point.
- 24:21And so Revelation, this age to come, this age of hope, of eternal reigning with Christ
- 24:30on the earth and enjoying him forever.
- 24:33What else is there to come?
- 24:34The judgment of all things.
- 24:38Very important truth here.
- 24:40Turn to Revelation 20.
- 24:44So not only do we experience in Revelation 21 the amazing new heaven and new earth, and
- 24:50we've got to remember Jesus says, behold, I make all things.
- 24:55There's also a clear understanding here concerning the judgment seat of Christ.
- 25:01That God does not let the evil go unpunished, nor does he take away our reward who is him.
- 25:16So part two of this age to come is seeing the God who reigns.
- 25:24Verse 11.
- 25:25Then I saw a great right throne and him who was seated on it.
- 25:29From his presence the earth and sky fled away and no place was found for them.
- 25:35And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne.
- 25:42And books were opened.
- 25:44What books?
- 25:46Books were opened.
- 25:51How many books?
- 25:52A whole mess of books.
- 25:54I'm thinking all of them.
- 25:56God be all of them.
- 25:59Not just one book, it's all the books.
- 26:02The books were opened.
- 26:03Then another book was opened.
- 26:05A. You get that?
- 26:09There's a whole mess of books.
- 26:10And then there's this one book.
- 26:13Just the mess of books, wide road.
- 26:16One book, skinny road.
- 26:19I like the skinny book.
- 26:23Then another book was opened which is the book of life.
- 26:26And look, he opens both books.
- 26:29Why?
- 26:30Because the dead are raised.
- 26:33The dead are now before the throne.
- 26:36The wicked and the good.
- 26:39Doesn't that make sense?
- 26:40Wait a minute, Jesus said something about that, didn't he?
- 26:44He says those who are on his right, well done my good and faithful servants.
- 26:47Those on his left, depart from me I never knew you.
- 26:50Oh, it's right here.
- 26:54Here we go.
- 26:55And then he says, and the dead were judged by what was written in the books according
- 27:01to what they had done.
- 27:04And the sea gave up the dead that were in it.
- 27:06And death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them.
- 27:09And they were judged, each one of them according to what they had done.
- 27:14And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.
- 27:17This is the second death in the lake of fire.
- 27:20And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the
- 27:26lake of fire.
- 27:29A judgment seat.
- 27:31That's it.
- 27:33Pretty amazing.
- 27:37So this is the powers of the age to come, the thing we look forward to.
- 27:43Our eventual reign with Christ forever.
- 27:47And the reality is the day has come that that judgment of God for anything contrary to him
- 27:57has been thrown into hell.
- 28:01Verse six, we're back in the Hebrews chapter six, verse six, and then have him falling
- 28:09away.
- 28:10This word falling away means reject or willingly denounce what you once had.
- 28:15This word restore means to renovate, to renovate them, to renew them again to repentance.
- 28:25You notice he takes you back to where you first began.
- 28:31That's they are crucifying the son of God all over again to their own shame.
- 28:35That's what it means to their own harm means put to open shame.
- 28:40Now last principle and we're done for the day.
- 28:45The person whose heart receives the gift of salvation produces the fruits of faith in
- 28:50their life.
- 28:51But the person whose heart did not receive the gift of salvation continues to produce
- 28:57bad fruit.
- 28:58And I use this analogy because this is what Jesus says, a good tree produces good fruit,
- 29:05but a bad tree produces bad fruit.
- 29:11So here's a statement, Matthew 13 verse 23, says it this way, as for what was sown on
- 29:19good soil, this is the one who hears the word, understands it, he indeed bears fruit in yields,
- 29:27in one case a hundred fold and another 60 and another 30.
- 29:33Either way he produces fruit.
- 29:37The writer in Hebrews verse seven through eight says it this way, the land, the ground,
- 29:41this word land is ground suitable for growing.
- 29:48Is your heart suitable for growing?
- 29:54Has God cultivated the land of your heart?
- 30:00Because the land that is suitable for growing that has drunk the rain that has that often
- 30:07falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated receives
- 30:16a blessing from God.
- 30:18They produce fruit.
- 30:20Here's what it means.
- 30:21You ready?
- 30:23God is the cultivator and when he cultivates the heart and he reigns upon the heart of
- 30:31man the truth of his gospel, Paul plants Apollo's waters, he produces in that person a crop
- 30:44that is useful because the heart has been cultivated.
- 30:49The cultivating thing is the gospel.
- 30:52The gospel cultivates the heart.
- 30:54God uses it.
- 30:56Sometimes that rain and cultivation if you ever know, if you guys know when it rains
- 31:02here does it rain on the farmland?
- 31:07Does it rain also in the woods?
- 31:10Anybody like to go out in the woods and plant some corn?
- 31:14Why can't you plant corn out there?
- 31:18Someone says sunlight?
- 31:19Why else can you plant corn?
- 31:22I know you guys are going to say it a little.
- 31:25There's also rocks and thorns and there's also thistles and there's stuff that killed
- 31:30the plant.
- 31:33You know when you want to do farmland there's two ways to deal with the land of farmland.
- 31:38One to deal with the issue of the farmland is what?
- 31:43To rip it up.
- 31:45And typically it takes about two years to rid the ground of all of the pestilence that's
- 31:52on it.
- 31:54Insects and vines and all this other junk.
- 31:59Most times they'll go and they'll rip it up.
- 32:02And then what do they do?
- 32:06You ever get grubs in your grass?
- 32:08What do you do to your grass?
- 32:10You burn it.
- 32:15Burning refines.
- 32:17Okay?
- 32:19Now this is what the writer says here.
- 32:23See the rain falls on both the good and the bad.
- 32:26The wicked and the righteous.
- 32:29But only the heart that's been cultivated will produce a crop.
- 32:34But there are hearts that will not be cultivated.
- 32:37Because they can't be cultivated, because they're not supposed to be cultivated.
- 32:43That's what he says here.
- 32:44But if it bears thorns and thistles after the rain falls on it, it's worthless and near
- 32:51to being cursed.
- 32:53Interesting term here.
- 32:55It's near to being cursed.
- 32:58And what is its end to be burned?
- 33:04That's a hard statement.
- 33:08In other words, there are hearts that will receive the rain and produce a crop.
- 33:12Then there's hearts that get rain but it doesn't take the rain in.
- 33:17It just produces stuff like that way out there in the woods.
- 33:24Useful is that?
- 33:25What kind of use is that?
- 33:26It's no use at all.
- 33:29So here's my translation.
- 33:33The ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and is tilled produces crops and
- 33:39herbs and receives a blessing from God.
- 33:45The ground that produces thorns and thistles, even though the rain has fallen on it, that
- 33:50ground is worthless and cursed and its end is to be burned.
- 33:55It's useless.
- 33:59Well that's not fair.
- 34:04I thought God says, my desire is that all men would come to repentance.
- 34:08That's not fair.
- 34:10You know what's not fair?
- 34:13That he rains on the bad ground anyway.
- 34:18That's not fair.
- 34:20Why does he give rain to the ground that doesn't deserve it, doesn't want it, doesn't like
- 34:27it, rejects it?
- 34:30Now I'm sure you look at the trees and the thistles and stuff.
- 34:33You're like, you know, I cultivated you and tilled you and you're still not producing
- 34:36good stuff.
- 34:37Like that's not fair.
- 34:38Like why am I working so hard?
- 34:42But people, we have a tendency not to look at things I think as God sees them.
- 34:48He says, I give grace to everyone.
- 34:52I put rain on everyone.
- 34:55It rains on the good and the bad.
- 35:00But blessed are those who receive the blessing of God because God has tilled the land and
- 35:07that land has received the water from the rain that has fallen on it.
- 35:15How come we can't see that grace?
- 35:18How come we always got to point out God must be a bad God if he doesn't save everybody?
- 35:23The fact that he saves one is a grace that's beyond measure because the scripture says
- 35:31for all have sinned, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 35:35No one seeks God, no not one.
- 35:39All have turned aside.
- 35:41All have venom that come from their lips.
- 35:46All of us are desperately wicked.
- 35:49There's no one righteous.
- 35:53The wages of sin is death.
- 35:55We're all dead and are trespassers in sins.
- 35:58The fact that God saves one is a grace beyond measure.
- 36:03But God just didn't save one.
- 36:06He saved many.
- 36:09And that's what we're going to read in the next couple of verses starting next week in
- 36:12verse 9.
- 36:15So I want us to really understand that the grace of God is beyond measure and that this
- 36:20amazing doctrine of renewal, regeneration, election, and doctrine of righteousness, doctrine
- 36:28of justification is all saturated through this chapter.
- 36:34Very important to understand God's grace is beyond what we can ever imagine.
- 36:40We all deserve one thing.
- 36:42It's interesting, and it's about to be the only political statement I'll say it this
- 36:47way okay.
- 36:48It's interesting after listening to Trump's speech at the RNC, you know, as you guys know
- 36:54where I stand as a in my politics.
- 36:59Everybody was claiming it was a miracle.
- 37:03You know what Trump said?
- 37:06I shouldn't be here.
- 37:08I'm here only by the providential hand of God.
- 37:11You know what?
- 37:12He was absolutely right.
- 37:15The only reason why he was there is because God providentially had set it in time for
- 37:20him to be there.
- 37:23And for that to happen the way it happened was not because God took his head and just
- 37:26turned it just a little bit.
- 37:28It's called providence.
- 37:31A power you can't see that does not break nature, but it's so affected through time
- 37:38that at that moment God knew and so it happens.
- 37:46Providence is not a miracle.
- 37:48Providence is a power unseen.
- 37:55That's an amazing thought.
- 37:58So let's thank God for opportunities to see him at work and for someone to finally say
- 38:06God is providential.
- 38:09So let's pray.
- 38:10Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 38:13To you be honor and glory and power and might forever.
- 38:15Lord, we praise you and thank you for your word.
- 38:18We thank you that we need to move away from milk and move into solid food that we may
- 38:24grow in a full stash of maturity of Christ for your glory.
- 38:27In Jesus' name.
