- 0:01Speaker 1: Thanks Mike. Happy New Year to you, Bud Lane. You
- 0:04Speaker 1: have a five game point street going right now. Following
- 0:06Speaker 1: a three two shootout loss to Vancouver. How did you
- 0:09Speaker 1: feel about the crack end the way they played it
- 0:11Speaker 1: close at the of the year.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought we I thought we played very well,
- 0:16Speaker 2: you know, in the last few games, and certainly the
- 0:18Speaker 2: Vancouver game. You know, it's funny how it goes, the
- 0:22Speaker 2: games you maybe should win you don't, and the games
- 0:25Speaker 2: you shouldn't you do, you know, I thought that was definitely.
- 0:29Speaker 3: A game we should have won.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We know you've said this multiple times the last couple
- 0:33Speaker 1: of weeks that the team has played better in some
- 0:35Speaker 1: of their losses as opposed to maybe some of their wins.
- 0:38Speaker 1: When you look at a game like Vancouver, did you
- 0:40Speaker 1: feel that there was some meat left on the bone
- 0:42Speaker 1: or were you overall satisfied with how the team played?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Very satisfied with how the team played, you know. I mean,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you can look back on two or three different situations,
- 0:53Speaker 2: but we we had.
- 0:55Speaker 3: The majority of the scoring chances.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You know, we certainly had opportunity in overtime on the
- 1:01Speaker 2: power play, which.
- 1:03Speaker 3: We you know, didn't capitalize on.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So maybe from that standpoint, a little meat left on
- 1:07Speaker 2: the bone, But I do honestly believe that it shouldn't
- 1:12Speaker 2: even have gott into overtime, and you know it did,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and or a shootout record is not good enough. We've
- 1:20Speaker 2: got to be better in that situation, you know. So
- 1:24Speaker 2: we're definitely going to have more shootouts here by the
- 1:27Speaker 2: end of the year. So we've got to make some
- 1:29Speaker 2: adjustments and some changes there.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You've worked on the shootout and practice a few times
- 1:34Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks. Is that something that you
- 1:36Speaker 1: can practice? I mean, each guy's got their individual moves.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You can't practice against other goalies other than your own.
- 1:43Speaker 1: How do you prepare and plan for a shootout?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Well, there's a there's a goalie scout put out for
- 1:49Speaker 2: our guys to understand what exactly, you know, maybe the
- 1:53Speaker 2: weakness of the opposition goal tabor is. You know, if
- 1:57Speaker 2: you get into that shootout situation and you can to
- 2:00Speaker 2: sit and we do practice it.
- 2:03Speaker 3: But I use this analogy.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I can stand there and make fifteen three foot putts
- 2:08Speaker 2: in a row on the practice grade and then I've
- 2:11Speaker 2: got a three foot or to you know, take twenty
- 2:14Speaker 2: bucks off my buddy, and it's a little bit different
- 2:16Speaker 2: than that, So, you know, finding guys that relish that
- 2:22Speaker 2: situation and are in that situation. And you know, we've
- 2:25Speaker 2: used our guys who have career numbers in those situations,
- 2:29Speaker 2: you know, And you know, we just haven't had any
- 2:31Speaker 2: success thus far this year.
- 2:34Speaker 3: But there's a lot of a lot of hockey left.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I'm sure you're going to get tired of the schedule question,
- 2:39Speaker 1: so forgive me, But seventeen games in the month of
- 2:42Speaker 1: January tied for a league record in a calendar month.
- 2:46Speaker 1: What does the preparation look like going into a month
- 2:49Speaker 1: like this? You're now tonight starting your third of four
- 2:52Speaker 1: consecutive back to back series. How do you plan, how
- 2:56Speaker 1: do you rest? What goes into making sure that this
- 3:00Speaker 1: team is prepared every day?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Well, I just think it's a mental thing for me.
- 3:04Speaker 2: You know, you don't use the schedule as an excuse,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and as a coaching staff, we give our players enough
- 3:11Speaker 2: rest so that when they come to the rink they
- 3:13Speaker 2: can give it everything they have. Now over the course
- 3:16Speaker 2: of this month, you know, are we going to be
- 3:19Speaker 2: at our best on a given night?
- 3:21Speaker 3: There's there's almost guaranteed.
- 3:24Speaker 2: To be a game where we're going to be tired
- 3:26Speaker 2: or maybe two games where we're going to be tired.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, that's where your
- 3:30Speaker 2: structure becomes your safety blanket.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And you know you need We're going to need good goldending.
- 3:35Speaker 2: It's that simple, so you know, no excuses, get proper
- 3:39Speaker 2: rest and come ready to play.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Nashville did not have the start to the year that
- 3:44Speaker 1: they wanted, but like Seattle, they're knocking on the door
- 3:47Speaker 1: of a playoff spot here January one, seven and three
- 3:50Speaker 1: in their last ten games. What have you seen from
- 3:52Speaker 1: them on film and what type of challenges do they
- 3:55Speaker 1: present to this club tonight.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Well, they're a big hockey team, you know, and they
- 4:00Speaker 2: of the net really as good as any team I've
- 4:03Speaker 2: seen in the league. You know, I would say, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: Minnesota is a team like that we've played in the
- 4:09Speaker 2: past here that I talked about that, But no, Nashville
- 4:13Speaker 2: is big, and they pound pucks and they get people
- 4:18Speaker 2: to the net and they're having success doing it. Obviously,
- 4:21Speaker 2: they've got an elite NHL defenseman in Romaniosi who drives
- 4:24Speaker 2: the offense from the back end Forstburg, who's an elite
- 4:28Speaker 2: goal scorer, Steven Stamkos, who is ultra elite. They've got
- 4:34Speaker 2: some weapons there, you know, and they're playing well. Like
- 4:38Speaker 2: you say seven and three, they're actually eight and three
- 4:39Speaker 2: in the last eleven games. They're play fast and they're
- 4:43Speaker 2: playing well. It's going to be a great challenge. They're
- 4:47Speaker 2: a point ahead of us in the standings, and you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: it's a big hockey game.
- 4:51Speaker 1: You mentioned the Minnesota while and I want to ask
- 4:52Speaker 1: you this real fast. When you have a team that
- 4:55Speaker 1: is similar to teams you've seen, can you go back
- 4:57Speaker 1: and watch that wild game and see what worked against them,
- 5:01Speaker 1: maybe it'll work against Nashville. Or when you do your scouting,
- 5:03Speaker 1: when your coaches are scouting, do you just focus on
- 5:07Speaker 1: Nashville tonight Vancouver tomorrow or can you go back and
- 5:10Speaker 1: look at similar teams and what worked against them?
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you can go back a little bit on similar teams,
- 5:17Speaker 2: but for the most part, you're focused on that team.
- 5:20Speaker 2: You can reference back to it, you know, and just
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, we've got to do this like we did
- 5:25Speaker 2: against Minnesota. But you know, every team sort of has
- 5:29Speaker 2: its own little challenges, even if some of them have similarities,
- 5:36Speaker 2: and you prepare for that team individually
