- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: your listening to the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for adventuring with us, as we discover what incredible athletes and outdoor enthusiasts are doing all over the world.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now here's your host, Kurt Linville.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: Hello friends and happy Groundhog Day!
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of funny we recorded this episode before I went to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro and of course in this episode we talk about getting ready to go to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro so Groundhog Day kind of makes sense all the repeats.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you are what makes the Adventure Sports podcast worth doing.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: You the listeners were so thankful for you.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: When you hear an episode that you find compelling, please do share it with a friend that helps us.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: It helps the podcast and we're very, very appreciative.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: And then make sure that you're getting out and doing your own fun and let us know about it when you do.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: You can always reach us at info at adventuresportspodcast.com.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: You can also visit with us on the Discord server and the link to that changes from time to time.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to update it in the show notes.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Today's episode is not just about planning for adventures today, but it's about planning for an adventure-focused lifestyle for the long haul.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: This one's going to be great, so let's dive into the episode.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: Hey friends, today we have Curtin Cindy Lillgetall with us and they have been on the adventure sports podcast a couple of times and I was trying to remember if I interviewed them I know the sounds really weird, but when I listened to a show that some other host did I remember the show, but I don't remember if I was in it, so anyway turns out that they've been on the adventure sports podcast a couple of times with Mason, not with me, but I'm excited to get a chance to visit with them.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: Um, the first time they were on was in 2019, and then they were on again in 2020, and so it's been five years.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: Where does the time go?
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: That is crazy.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: But their focus is on adventure-focused retirement.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to visit with them about what they have going on in their retirement, because they do so much travel and so many adventurous types of things in their travel.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, sometimes you hear people that are retired and they like, well, we go to Europe, we stay in nice hotel.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think that Curtin Cindy are going to let us know that you can do things a lot more adventurously than that.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_04]: So don't get me wrong.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, I so tell.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: Nice hotels, okay, from Dunedown to time isn't it?
- 2:43[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, anyway, Curtin Cindy, welcome to the program.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_06]: Thank you.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for having us.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's a lot of fun to do things like this.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it is.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: And Curtin Cindy have their own podcast as well, by the way.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's adventure retired.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: So just adventure, like adventure, but then retired.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the word is.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: Or you could say adventure tired, if you wanted to.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: We say adventure retired.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: because it spells the same way.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, they have their own podcast, and that's really fun, because it, you know, gives you the perspective of not only what they're doing, but other people that they meet along the way in their travels and stuff like that.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: But we wanted to talk kind of in two ways.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about adventure in retirement.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_01]: but I also want to talk to people that are young who are building their careers and building their families and who are thinking about what would adventure look like later in life and what can I do now so that later in life I can have those adventures so we'll do both things so this is going to be
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the adventure sports podcast reaches all ages.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: It really does.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: And we are about half what I might call young adults.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: And then half what I would call middle aged or older adults.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is for everybody.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: Curtain Cindy.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: when you first contacted me about this you wanted to talk about another adventure that you did that was really unique in Peru.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: We might as well just start there.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: So it was sacred valley Peru and sky-lodge adventure suites and I'll let you explain all of this but my first question is why sacred valley?
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: What did they do you know what that was about?
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Why they call it sacred valley?
- 4:24[SPEAKER_06]: When we get an urge to travel, I should say Kurt is the one that does all the planning and that's fine because in every family somebody does the planning and somebody else is the encouraged shows up at the airport.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_06]: I'm the encourager.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_06]: But I also like to get on social media and look at that area that we're going to and I saw on Facebook or Mr. Ben Pinterest.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_06]: about Sacred Valley.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_06]: And I told him that because our goal was to go to Machu Picchu, right?
- 4:54[SPEAKER_06]: Because I wanted to see Machu Picchu.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_06]: He'd already been there and I wanted to see it.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_06]: I said, is Sacred Valley on the way?
- 5:01[SPEAKER_06]: And he's like, yeah, you go right through it.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_06]: And I'm like, well, then I want to do the Sacred Valley experience.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_06]: And he's like,
- 5:07[SPEAKER_04]: really the adventure pot and I had seen him 12 years ago and I took my mother to a macho petu and I you know you're driving and you're looking up and seeing these pods on the side of cliff I'm thinking that's the coolest thing in the world but my wife wouldn't do that.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_04]: Well 12 years later she sees him on Pinterest and says ooh let's do that.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do that.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: So describe what we're talking about, sky-lodge.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: These are glass pods hanging on the side of a cliff.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: Way up above the valley.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: 400, right?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: Describe this to us.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_06]: OK, well, you, the valley is beautiful.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the sacred valley is beautiful.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of between Kusko and Machu Picchu and the pods, there are four of them.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_04]: And there are four hundred meters above the ground.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_06]: And you hide on the sheer cliff.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_06]: a ladder, like rungs of a ladder, the entire way up.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they have rebound ladders into the side of the mountain that they've drilled and then put these glued these rebars in there.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so you have a ladder that you're climbing and you're double attached in.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_04]: There's a cable that runs the side it and you have a belt on and you have two carabiners that you hook over this cable.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_04]: about 10 feet.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_04]: So the worst thing that if you fell and you're doing everything correctly, you would only fall like 10 feet and you had helmets on and everything.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_04]: But you're just climbing and then you take one off and put it over the little thing that's inside and then you take the other one off and do it.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_04]: You're always clipped in once.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_04]: They stressed that too.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_06]: And there's one area where you get up to halfway up there and you actually are on the side of the cliff and you have to go sideways.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_06]: And so you're just like on a bridge that's three cables wide.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_04]: and you go across like maybe you're holding one here and you're 20 feet and you just you are you're you're you're you're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we we calculated you know 400 meters and about every 10 meters is the or that you have to change things so we did roughly 1200
- 7:32[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, wow.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the lungs of the ladder.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the lungs of the ladder.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_04]: And some of them you are literally upside down going backwards and coming up over a thing.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_04]: So a ledge.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, if you were to let go of your feet, they're going to swing out.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but we felt very safe at it.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, sometimes you have to actually hook your arm in one of the rungs to you're safe, you know, and then you climb up and you hook your arm again and
- 7:57[SPEAKER_06]: it was just amazing.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_04]: And she's not a big height person, but I'm that scared of heights.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_06]: I just, I'm the one that works out for this.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_06]: So I started working at, I knew this was going to be a hard thing physically.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_06]: We're 64 years old.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_06]: So you know, it's not like we're in our 30s and 40s doing this.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_06]: So
- 8:17[SPEAKER_04]: which the other two couples that went with us were not they weren't friends of ours but they were doing yeah one group one married couple is in their 20s they were from Italy no they were from Miami and the other couple was in their 30s and they were from Italy and so they just they were a little fast and we were
- 8:35[SPEAKER_06]: But we were like, I wanted to also, I mean, you know, you can go fast, but I wanted to go up and like every 10 feet, I want to turn around and look.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_06]: So I asked a person I am, even when we went down the Grand Canyon, I needed to stop and look because, yeah, I worth 64.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_06]: I never going to do this again, maybe.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_06]: I want to see, and I want to remember the sights that I'm seeing, you know, and it was beautiful.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_06]: Every, we had the most perfect day.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_06]: It is beautiful out.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_06]: The temperature was great, and every time I stopped to turn around a look, it was a different view.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_06]: I swear I changed totally every day.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_06]: Wow.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_06]: It was beautiful.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: So this is in Peru.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: And in Peru, it's really high up, but I don't know where you were in relationship.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: So what was the elevation, do you know?
- 9:23[SPEAKER_04]: The elevation for this is kind of interesting because everybody thinks Machu Picchu is so high, but that's only at like 600 for 6000 meters Machu Picchu.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_04]: It looks like it's clear up there, but it's not.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_04]: And so we were roughly six to seven thousand meters in the Sacred Valley.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_04]: You're in the, you're by the town of Oletombo.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_04]: And, um,
- 9:46[SPEAKER_04]: which is, once again, it's kind of weird because you just came from Cusco, which is that 11,000 meters.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_04]: Not higher.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of the highest.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking meters or feet.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting confused.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: No, excuse me.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_06]: You're right, it's feet.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's feet.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's feet.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's feet, not meters.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: So the reason is because 11,000 meters would be higher than Everest.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's easier.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's easier.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_04]: But we climbed 400 meters, so.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: right and so which is like 1300 feet more or less.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: I tell you what the rest of the world puts all of the elevations in meters and since we talk feet it it's always confusing on the podcast.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's always confusing.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how many times I've had this conversation but
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: So you're saying it was like 6,7,000 feet.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: So you're up there.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: But it's not, it's not above, like into the thin air above tree line.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_04]: That's not what it's, however.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_02]: No.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_04]: Now, okay.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_04]: Let's go as, because it was at 11,000 feet.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of people get altitude sickness at Kusko.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_04]: It's basically where you came from that morning.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_06]: this place.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_06]: So cool when you you book this excursion they actually you know they pick you up at your hotel which is great so we drove for like about two hours to get there and they have like a 20 minute class and they tell you what you're going to do in 20 minutes and they get ready start.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_06]: And this is in the afternoon they had done one in the morning, but you did they didn't stay overnight, they just went up there Yeah, they go up and then zip line down But okay, and then stay the night and then zip line down in the morning And there's the four pods three of them are sleeping pods and the fourth pod is bigger and that's where they actually cook and gourmet meal for you twice Oh nice Yeah, and so once when you get up there you're in you go there for dinner
- 11:45[SPEAKER_04]: And then you go back to your pod and you do what you want, you know, and then the next morning at breakfast, you go over to this pod and they serve you a great breakfast, but they're very safe about it.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_04]: You know, anytime you are going out of your pod, you have a radio that you got out radio, the guys who are staying in the dinner area, you radios that curtains in you're going up on the roof to look at stars.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_04]: and they say, okay, buckle in.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so we buckle in and I know they were keeping an eye on us too, but it's very safe, very safe.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_06]: And of course we had to stay in the pod that was the tall or the highest, right?
- 12:22[SPEAKER_06]: So we're up there and we get up there and it's about six o'clock at night now because we started
- 12:35[SPEAKER_06]: So we get up there.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_06]: It's dark already.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_06]: So you have your headlights on.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_06]: And so then we go to our pod and kind of relax for a few minutes.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_06]: And then dinner's going to be like it's seven.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_06]: And it's pitch black.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_06]: And so now you got to do all the climbing from your pod over to the bigger pod in the dark.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's about 20 yards or so.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_06]: But it felt like a million.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_04]: And you're up there.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and we're in the pod this, of course, the highest one.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_06]: And so we kind of have to do that backwards climb again, where you're kind of bending over backwards to get over to the other one.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_06]: And that was kind of scary.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, that being pitch black is so dark.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_06]: You don't, you don't look at your feet.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_06]: You look at your hands, you know, and okay, you hope your feet are finding a run in.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I have their website here and I pulled it up just so I could look at it.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to tell the listeners, if you're at a computer, then you do need to see this.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: These pods are all glass, so you can sleep in them or have your dinner in them and you're looking out across the valley.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're just hanging on this cliff face.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_06]: And they're so cool because they had, I mean, the the pot itself, you get into it.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_06]: You come in through it.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_06]: There's like a little, um, they have story.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_06]: So there's games and stuff.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_06]: So you can play like if you want to play cribbing or cards.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_06]: And then there's a, um,
- 14:03[SPEAKER_06]: two beds that are lower and then a huge big queen size or king size bed that's at the very edge.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_06]: So that's where we slept.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_06]: But four people could actually sleep in this pot.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_06]: So if you brought family members, but then on the other end, there's a bathroom.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_06]: And that was the one thing that people always ask us.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_06]: What did you do about the bathroom?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_06]: And while you open up the bathroom, and there is, um,
- 14:28[SPEAKER_06]: a toilet, right?
- 14:30[SPEAKER_06]: And then there is a urinal that it looks like kind of a funnel.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_06]: Weird.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_06]: We're just a little.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, but what happens is, of course, men can use the urinal and it just goes right off the side of the mountain.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_06]: And when the women have to use the bathroom, there's like a little, but you call that, yeah, we used to have a pot when they're old days.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, well, there's a pot you put into the toilet and there is an actual toilet there Honey pot.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, so you put this honey pot into the toilet and of course it catches the urine and then you pour that down The fever area.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_06]: Oh wow and then if you have to use it for something else You have to beg and there's no way anybody chose anything else You just make sure it's pee and that's it, you know, but if you have to do it Yeah, you go into a plastic bag
- 15:20[SPEAKER_04]: And then you seal it up and they have another tube that you drop it down there.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_04]: And those guys, they will carry it down.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_06]: And I was like, that ain't going to happen, you know?
- 15:30[SPEAKER_06]: That is not going to happen.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: But well, it's nice to know.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, people are going to have these questions.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, what do you do about that?
- 15:37[SPEAKER_06]: And then there's running water.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, there's a little sink that has pressure that actually has water.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_06]: Well, it was like a water just on.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_06]: And, you know, they bring the water in on their back.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, our photographer, that morning, the morning we were there, he had climbed back up, so he was going to take pictures of us all.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_04]: And he's got one of those 10 gallon things in his backpack.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_04]: And he climbed up this, the last, of course, they're good.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_04]: These days, I'm like three times a day.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_04]: They're getting strong.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, well, I ask him how long does it take you?
- 16:10[SPEAKER_04]: And then a half an hour, 40 minutes.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_06]: Took us an hour and a half.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, took us.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, were you tired?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, the funny thing.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_06]: This is why I love this Kurt because the next day, Kurt could barely walk this, he said.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_04]: My thighs were killing me.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_06]: Me, not at all.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_06]: I had not, I didn't, I was perfect.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: Listen to you said you were training for this, right?
- 16:34[SPEAKER_06]: I was working out the floor.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: She was going to the personal trainer, too.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_06]: I had absolutely no problems.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's just why I was just screaming the next day.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: We went to Vancouver Island and went to, uh, it's wild play, I guess, is what they call it now.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's changed names so many times I forget, but it's a, it's a ropes course hype in the trees and you do zip lines and all sorts of games up there, um, balance games and stuff.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: And we wanted my, uh, my new sun and law to see it because it was his first time to be up there.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: So we went back and we spent two or three hours.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: I guess up in the trees, like a bunch of monkeys, and I was spanked by the time we were done, but we didn't do anything like the elevation that you did.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm thinking about climbing a like a 1,300 foot long ladder.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's a lot of chin-ups.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_04]: It was.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_04]: And like said, my thighs were killing me the next day.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_06]: I felt relieved that I could run.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_04]: But we were tired.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you're going to sleep
- 17:38[SPEAKER_04]: That sounds fun.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_06]: That night was so windy.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_06]: We wanted to go out of the pot and sit on the top.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_06]: This kind of like a deck that you could sit on and watch the stars.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_06]: But it was so windy that you know, it was just really windy.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, so about finally about one o'clock at stopped and we kind of woke up But then and just looked at the stars and in that we didn't go outside that night It just it was just too much.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I didn't want to blow off the side But it was beautiful weather other than that climbing You know the next day the next day you get up you had this great breakfast I mean these guys are really good cooks They made this breakfast for you.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_06]: It's got everything you would want.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_06]: I mean
- 18:20[SPEAKER_06]: everything.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_06]: And then you take off, you go pack your backpack, whatever you have.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_06]: And you, everybody starts going up again.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_06]: You climb just a little bit up and then you go around the cliff that you're on.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_06]: And then there's seven zip lines right back to the parking lot.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's great.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: So you zip line kind of zigzag or down the cliff?
- 18:42[SPEAKER_01]: Is that where we're going?
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: Much so.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_04]: That one, yeah.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_04]: One of them is one of them.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_06]: And these are big zip lines.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, one of them is my 740.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it was their huge.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, they take like, you know, they almost take like a half a minute to minute.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_06]: You know, sometimes zip lines just go so fast and you're here.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_06]: This one you actually have time to look around and it One of them you have to do tandem because the weight
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_06]: Is they got to make sure you get there because it's kind of more of a, uh, uh, gradual.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_06]: Or if yeah, gradual, so it, it was, it was great.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_06]: I just, I love Ziplining period and we have Ziplining.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what's every country you've gone to.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 19:24[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_06]: We just, you know, you always, you always worry about it.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_06]: They're safety, but we have never had safety issues in any of them.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_06]: They've always been very upright and concerned about safety in.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_04]: I love zip lining and we offered me a job and I almost took it but I got better come home, you know that's like oh man I could say I couldn't say enough about the young men that went up there and were our guides you know and chefs and they were just they were wonderful you know and one of them it was his last climb and then he was moving back to Venezuela yeah yeah he'd been there eight years and
- 20:00[SPEAKER_04]: He was going back and that was neat.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_06]: It was really cool.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: Man, so that's called SkyLodge Adventure Sweets.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_06]: And there's two different kinds.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_06]: There's the one that we did, which is more... SkyLodge.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_06]: SkyLodge.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_06]: And then you go around the mountain.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_06]: Not very much.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_04]: Down the sacred valley a little.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_04]: And there's the StarLodge.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_06]: And the StarLodge are not as high and you actually climb down steps to get to them.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, well, they're really...
- 20:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they have steps there.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_04]: It's more for, I guess, people are hitchhiking.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, older.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_04]: You know, if you don't, it's still snappy in and everything.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_04]: But that one's fans here.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure it costs a little more, because one of their pods there has a hot tub, so that he, wow.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they can go out of their little sleeping pod and go to the hot tub, you know?
- 20:50[SPEAKER_06]: I told Kurt, we're going to do that one.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_06]: We're 70.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_04]: There you go.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_06]: I want to do that one.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_01]: This is a beautiful example of an adventurous thing to do, and I'm impressed.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to say it.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm impressed.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: You aren't old yet, but you're not spring chickens either.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is impressive.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_01]: You said 64.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, 64.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_05]: We asked you for.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_04]: The oldest one up, and they said they had a 73 year old guy doing.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm like, wow, that's a, that's pretty impressive.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: There are a lot of, uh, I'll call them aging athletes in, in the valley where we are.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: And what I have observed is that there's no reason you can't do amazing big adventures as you age, as long as you don't stop.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_06]: That's right.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_01]: If you ever stop doing it, it won't take long before you won't be able to do it.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_06]: That's exactly, I think that is the key.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_06]: And you know,
- 21:49[SPEAKER_06]: Kurt as you age and this is for all your younger people.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_06]: Everybody always asks us because we did retire pretty young.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_06]: We retired at 54 and everybody asks as well, you know, what is the best thing?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_06]: What do I need to do to retire?
- 22:02[SPEAKER_06]: The best thing is your health because if you don't have your health, you don't have anything, right?
- 22:08[SPEAKER_06]: So if you can at 54 or 53 or 45 start to keep your health in check
- 22:19[SPEAKER_06]: doing something physical.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_04]: Moving.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, moving.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_06]: It makes your retirement so much sweeter.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's that's well said
- 22:29[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's talk about this for the younger adults in the program.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: If they want to have an adventure-focused lifestyle in their retirement years, what should they be doing now, that's the question.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_04]: I, my opinions, my opinions, max your Roth IRAs out and max your regular IRAs out.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_04]: Just, you know, I'm not saying live like a miser while you're working because when even when we're working,
- 22:59[SPEAKER_04]: and we went to Europe and stuff like that with our kids, but you got you got to plan for this stage of life because it would not be fun to get to this stage and you don't have enough money to travel, you know?
- 23:12[SPEAKER_06]: And we were two school teachers.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_06]: It's not like we made $100,000 each, you know, for our career, in our career.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_06]: We were two school teachers and I mean,
- 23:24[SPEAKER_04]: start early.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_06]: I know we tell our own kids.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_06]: Even if it's a hundred dollars a month, you can put away.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_06]: It will pay off in the long run, you know.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_06]: So you know, start early and the other thing Kurt Boy said is the same house, same wife.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_04]: You know, some people don't have a choice.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_06]: But yeah, you don't have, sometimes you don't have a choice about that.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_06]: But you know, when we were in the young, let's say, the 30s, the 30s and 40s, a lot of our friends were building and going into bigger homes and that kind of a thing.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_06]: We had a really beautiful house.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_06]: We had a swimming pool in our backyard that we put in.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_06]: But you know, when you can, if you can get your house and be comfortable in your house,
- 24:09[SPEAKER_06]: and not have that envy of boys trying to be, you know, to add in or what it just it does make a difference in the long run because I think envy is the hardest thing to overcome when you're you see your friends buying the motorcycle or the speedboats and all that we decided to focus ours on saving for the future and then also we we took great trips in the summer as teachers
- 24:39[SPEAKER_06]: If we save all year long, we're going to be able to go to the national parks.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_06]: We had a little camper that we had and we had it for years and we tried to live within our means and it's just saving a lot.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, just trying to save as much as we could.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good idea.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_04]: The sky-lodge is we were in a package that I had a travel company line up But I think they're right at 952,000 bucks I mean for a night So yeah, I mean, but how often do you get to do something like that right?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_04]: So it's not cheap, you know, but if you want to, like I said, the other couples were a lot younger than us, and they were doing it.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_06]: And I think too, if you book it yourself and not go through a company, it's probably a little bit cheaper, you know, we went through a company.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_06]: I would tell a young people, you first of all focus on your family and your health and then try to
- 25:45[SPEAKER_06]: to start the saving because that investing, you know, for the long run is when it pays off.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_06]: You know, and we had a couple of years where it was, you know, where in the 80s was it when the stock market crash, you know, you see all this money going out the window and you're like, oh my god, but it recovers, so you know, and it comes around and so comes back.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, listen, listen to some good podcasts about that.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: I want to say something to get your perspective on this.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to see the shiny new fill in the blank.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: And when you do get something that is new and shiny and fun, then it is exciting.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: But in my experience, that excitement wanes fairly quickly.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're like, I spent how much on this.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: Now I've got to take care of this shiny thing or what do I do with it or it's taking up space or and I'm not saying don't have have good fun things.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: Toys, I mean, that I'm not saying don't do it, but I am saying if we can look past.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: the initial excitement to what it's going to be long-term, and the hardest part for this is probably the house itself.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_04]: Right, right.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because you look at the house and you think, oh, man, if we just live there, we'd be happy.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first of all, that doesn't work.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: the the happiness doesn't come from the things it's just a distraction and they will distract you it is fun they can be exciting but that's not long-term happiness and long-term happiness Cindy it's what you said it's family yeah yeah it's health memories curtain I had memories always been the type that we had
- 27:28[SPEAKER_06]: common dreams and we talked about things that we wanted to do and so you know if you don't have that conversation with the person that you're living with or your spouse if you don't say okay this is what I want in the future what do we need to get there then if you're only just thinking about right now you don't have those goals and so that sacrifice doesn't happen but when you have a goal and you say okay I when I we want to retire where we're
- 27:54[SPEAKER_06]: 50s.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_06]: All right, so what did we have to do for that?
- 27:56[SPEAKER_06]: Well, we were working, you know, he, he was a coach and a teacher.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_06]: I was a teacher and I worked at the University part time and I had to dream business.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_06]: Every, every little thing is all going to a goal and that goal.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_06]: You got to have those goals in line.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and you got to start dreaming when you're young.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_06]: I want to do this, you know, and I'm
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, what would you say to a couple who start to share their dreams a little bit or like, well, my goals would be, these are like, my bucket list items, what are yours?
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: What if those are completely different buckets?
- 28:29[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good point because... We've talked to people like that.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we've talked to people like that on our podcast, but sometimes you got to negotiate, you know, like, one of the first adventure we did in retirement, I wanted to go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and she was kind of iffy on that, because it's a hike.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_04]: but she she she she she wanted to do it you know she was scared about it nervous about it but she wanted to do it so if you have a spouse that gets you out of your comfort zone don't draw that hard line you know give it a shot i'm not saying do stupid things don't you know don't do stupid things but you have to give in and compromise you know
- 29:10[SPEAKER_06]: compromises a lot of it.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_06]: And like I said, I think to four lucky because crits the planner and I'm just the encourager.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, that's how I see my life.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_06]: I don't want a plan because I can screw up the computer just turning it on, you know, I can't get late.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_03]: I mean,
- 29:26[SPEAKER_06]: I've actually booked us tickets to movies and we get to the theater and it's for the next day.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_06]: You know, and so I mean, I know I screw up, so, you know, that's the thing.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_06]: So it's good that he knows how to do that.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_06]: But I think a lot of it is just having goals, think about your life, you know, when you're young, think about your life.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_06]: What do you want your life to look like when you're in your 40s?
- 29:49[SPEAKER_06]: What do you want it to look like when you're 50?
- 29:51[SPEAKER_06]: what do you want it to look like when you're 60?
- 29:53[SPEAKER_06]: And we, you know, my dad, a lot of our retirement early was because I knew my dad retired at 62 in November and found out he was dying of cancer in January.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_06]: And I mean, that's been, you know, I still, it's still hard and it's been over 20 years.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_06]: I did not want that.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_06]: And we had friends that never even made it to retirement, you know?
- 30:18[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_04]: or didn't make it to retirement together.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_04]: And then that's an event happens too.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_06]: And I said, you know, I feel I could go at any time now and I would die up a wonderful, happy person because I've done so much in my retirement already.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: I feel, yeah.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: That's nice.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: that's a that's a beautiful thing to be able to say yeah it is you know to be able to say this has been a good life I've done the things not that I'm going to stop but I if I had to stop I could be satisfied yeah yeah yeah there's just so much that you know so many people and as you grow older you you see this you see friends that you know
- 31:05[SPEAKER_06]: We have a friend that just lost his daughter at 31, you know, it's just horrible and I'm just like we're so blessed that we were able to do what we have done and That we're planning to do because we got more things on the on the burner, you know
- 31:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's let's talk about venn diagrams for a second.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_01]: So you know, I told Curtin Cindy that I was a teacher years ago myself.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: So the venn diagram is like you draw the the circles Right that overlap or don't overlap and it's like okay things that I'm interested in my bucket list, you know things that and They're gonna be things on there that you you might say well, I would do it if
- 31:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not if it was convenient.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's not it's not a big goal, but it's something that I I could see myself saying all right.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'll do that.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but if you draw the Vin diagrams and they overlap some people overlap a lot.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell by talking to you that you have a lot of overlap there Vin diagrams and some people maybe just barely overlap and then just kind of like, why'd you get married?
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm sorry.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to go there, but
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: I guess the thing I wanted to say about it is that as your life experiences increase because you try new things, your Venn diagram gets bigger, and you'll find more overlap than you expected.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think, and if you're willing to do the thing you wouldn't have chosen, but you're doing it because you're doing it with a person you care about, then you say, you know what, that was all right.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you can have fun doing anything together.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you know how to get along,
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: But how much have your Vin diagrams expanded over the years?
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because right now, I can tell by talking to you that you guys have a lot of alignment.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I don't know about you.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_06]: But I think just with the adventure
- 32:54[SPEAKER_06]: retired podcast when we talk to these people from all over the world and we hear other people adventure for like okay oh that sounds like fun you know it does like I mean I would like to do a hot air balloon ride in Africa wow you know then I'm thinking okay I guess I'll do a hot I will do a hot air ride in Iowa I mean I don't where we are now I just don't do a hot air ride you know a hot air balloon yeah I mean there's just there's a lot of things that we still want to do
- 33:22[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, not slowing down yet.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_04]: What was it, our friends said, don't sit too soon.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, don't sit too soon.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: Don't sit too soon.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, one thing that I heard from a, this was a travel expert who is writing books on helping people to get out and do things, which your experts at it now, because you've done so much of it.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: But what she said was, never have one trip on the calendar.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: You always have to have two.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_06]: Kurt has four or five.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: Well, good for you Kurt, but it gives you something to look forward to.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_01]: So when you finish the one, I mean, people have adventure withdrawals and it's like, oh, man, I work so hard to do this and now it's over now, what?
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: I know, right?
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good to know, oh, and we're going to Africa, which you just mentioned, you are going to Africa, right?
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that was, that was a need.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_06]: Yes, another guest.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, that's a guest off on our podcast.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_04]: She's a former teacher, and now she travels with teachers and lines him up.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, she was had this Africa trip planned.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_05]: And only 17 people were going on.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_05]: So we signed up, wow.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_04]: It's actually worth through Colette.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: So it's going to be a nice, I mean, that's not a cheap travel company.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's two weeks and yeah, it's going to be fun going and doing this safaris and seeing the falls and Victoria Falls and yeah, I think it'll be neat.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that'll be fantastic.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: Have you been to Africa before?
- 34:55[SPEAKER_04]: We went to Morocco.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_04]: When we were in Spain, we wanted to jump across the Gibraltar and go to Morocco.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_04]: And so our foreign exchange daughter, who we were staying with, her parents said, well, can we go?
- 35:09[SPEAKER_04]: And like, you know, they've lived there in southern Spain their whole life, but they'd never been to Africa right now.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_04]: So we did.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_04]: And we had a blast.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_04]: We were just there for an afternoon, but we were, you know, feet down on the continent.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's fun.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: So, when are you going to Africa?
- 35:25[SPEAKER_02]: June July.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, June in the last week of June for a week of July.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: I went to Africa 32 years ago and fell in love with it and I'm going back in three weeks.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, fun.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_02]: What you're about to do.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: By the time this episode comes out, I will have already been probably so.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_06]: And where are you going?
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: going to Tanzania.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: There are a group of of gentlemen who are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_01]: And the ages range from about 45 to 72.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_01]: They're 15 of us.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're going to be trudging up the mountain to 19349.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever it is, 1934 something.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's going to be quite the experience and everyone is curious if they can do it or not.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have our thing.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_04]: You know, that's one of those adventures kind of like the ladder, you know, the sacred valley.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_04]: Once you get into it, you know, you don't want to say I'm done, you know, and not make the whole.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_04]: So you just one foot after the other.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, the adrenaline takes a whole, it's like running, you know, when I, I used to be a heaster, but I used to run at, you know, when you get to, like,
- 36:37[SPEAKER_06]: If you're doing like a half marathon, you get to those last three miles or even a full mirror.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_06]: Venice, you're adrenaline.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_06]: You're your spent, but man, you know, you can see the end.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_06]: And I think a lot of adventures that are physical, it's like that when you see yourself at the end.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_06]: And just keep that in mind, you'll be fine.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_04]: Kilimanjaro would be cool.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I would.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: I saw Kilimanjaro from Kenya, actually, when I, you know, on my first trip, I saw it off on the horizon.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I said, I'll be back.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: And never expected it would be, you know, 32 years later, but yeah, that's the way it turned out.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_04]: And where did those years go, you know?
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: you know i have had so much fun during those years if i think about it i i'm just gonna give an example and i hope everyone listening will bear with me here but i i think that it's worthwhile to do this it was it was it was fall and the snow starting to fly and i remember it was a few years ago and i thought man i just didn't get a summer this year
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: I just didn't do the things.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_01]: And so I started thinking about what did I do?
- 37:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I listed all the adventures that we had done.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, no, I'm wrong.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_01]: I had a fantastic summer.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe what we did.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to not take time to remember.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_01]: And if you do, take time to remember, I think it makes you grateful.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, oh, wow, no, we did do the things.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, not done for the summer, but, you know, and that's where the 32 years went, Cindy.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: I ate.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_01]: I had so much fun with my family doing the things and for us it was backpacking in 14ers a lot.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_01]: We did some travel as a family.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: We did rock climbing and got deep into mountain biking.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: My son's all raced on high school teams and just when I started thinking about all the camping trips, all the mountain biking, all of the, you know, and then in the winter time we keep doing the mountain nearing in the winter time.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: We, you know, we do alpine touring
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: ski at the resort in cross country ski and we go winter back packing and and I just thought man it's been 30 years just packed full of amazing experiences yeah yeah so that's what you know what that we told you about we're climbing the sky lodge two other things there on that same trip we went to the Glaubo silence and then to Easter Island yeah and
- 39:07[SPEAKER_04]: those were amazing places too.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_04]: Not so much adventure, but Easter Island just getting to a place were very, very few people go and seeing the large Moai statues.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_04]: And then Galapagos Islands, as a former biology teacher of part of my career, seeing the giant tortoises was just phenomenal.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_06]: And you know to tell all your listeners to the older you get the faster it goes I mean I look back and I think I don't even remember that I don't remember that year at all.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_06]: I don't okay the year after we got married you know I don't remember one thing about that you know it's just life goes so fast and the older you are It's like before you know it's Christmas before you know it it's summer before it's just it goes fast
- 39:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we just took our Christmas tree down, and now I'm putting one back up again.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_06]: Exactly, I don't know.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, wait a minute, I just took this down.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's like making the bed.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's gonna be Christmas next year, just leave it there.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be a blanket, that way we don't have to redecorate.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, part of what makes it not go so fast, Indie, is taking the time to remember.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_01]: To take it and actually get out of piece of paper and write it down.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, just yeah.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, quick photo book online.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_04]: I'm trying to have it.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_06]: I'm trying to talk him into when we come back from Texas in March.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_06]: to go to April if the Eagles are still playing in the dome in Las Vegas because he doesn't like Las Vegas and it's okay, I mean, we don't gamble or anything like that.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_04]: 20 bucks, okay.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_06]: Anyway, I want to go.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_06]: I want to go see them, you know, and I keep thinking, I was thinking, you know, I just haven't seen that many great concerts, you know, and then I did what you said, I listed down who I've seen and my page is kept getting large and I'm like,
- 41:07[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, yeah, I saw.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_06]: I saw ZZ tab.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_06]: All right.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_06]: All right.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_06]: I saw it.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_06]: I'm thinking all of these people I've seen.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_06]: I think what haven't seen the Eagles.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see the Eagles, you know, and well, it's interesting that you said this fear Kurt.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: We're on the same page the Kurt degree.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_01]: I would pay money not to go to Las Vegas, but when they built this fear, I thought, huh.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_01]: I would love to see a really great concept.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_02]: I know, I know.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_01]: That might be worth it, you know, that might be worth it.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_04]: Well, they said there's not a bad scene in the house.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, cheap scene, even if it.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_06]: Once in a lifetime thing, you know, you don't have to ever go back to that again, but you get to see it.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_06]: And I think that would be cool.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's amazing.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: I read a few of the stats on it when I first heard about it and they do things like They have technology that focuses the sound on each individual seat.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_01]: Wow amazing.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_01]: So it's it's actually Directionalized sound and so the really is not a bad seat in the house.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like everybody has the best seat in the venue
- 42:06[SPEAKER_06]: See that's so you're just add to it right there.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think you see and then the the screens all around you and yeah Just that.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I can't imagine It looks amazing.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_06]: It does.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, you know, so you don't have to leave the states to see something cool You can do things right here in America that is just amazing, you know
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: to be fair to the the great folks in Las Vegas.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot more to Las Vegas than the strip.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: There is so much more and such great adventure sports that you can do in the area and better, in fact, Alex Arnold lives there and he was saying that he loves it because the world class rock climbing is so close, he can just get to any of it.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: So we shouldn't short change
- 42:54[SPEAKER_06]: That section of town.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_06]: We don't gamble if you're not that type of person.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_06]: And what I just don't like is the smoke.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_06]: You know, all those every casino you go to is smoky and I don't like that.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: The back to these islands.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: I want to go back to the islands.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: You did Machu Picchu Easter Island in the Galapagos.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, OK, there's three things that a lot of people think about doing.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: They're all different, but I was curious, is there one that stood out?
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, absolutely, you got to do that one that was better than the others, or they all three were doing, or how do you compare these things?
- 43:30[SPEAKER_04]: I, they're not close to each other, but I think, you know, it depends on the person, but all three of them, yeah, the three.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I, out there, he's dry and it's just majestic.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_06]: And that, that island itself,
- 43:42[SPEAKER_06]: is amazing.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_06]: Small.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_06]: There's not you don't see trash anywhere.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_06]: It is spotless.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_04]: And that a lot of pride.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_06]: Beautiful.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, pride in the people and all that.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_04]: It was just, it was phenomenal seeing that in here in the history of it.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_06]: And the Galapagos at was gorgeous, too.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, when you see a pasture that has cows out in it, and then four or five of these giant tortoises just walking around, free, just free room.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_04]: And they tell us, like, how do they get out of the pasture?
- 44:17[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the farmers will keep the top two barbed wire fences tight, and the bottom one is loose.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_04]: So the tortoise can walk up to it, and it goes over them.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_04]: So if you stick in and the tortoises can roam as they want, and it's just, oh, that's something.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_04]: And being up close to those tortoises is just phenomenal, phenomenal.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: And some of the oldest living things on Earth, as far as animals are concerned.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, and people think about the tortoises, we didn't realize, you know, there's the galopicals is like 19 islands, and each island had its own tortoise.
- 44:52[SPEAKER_04]: own species.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and I didn't see that they didn't know.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_06]: And they're different.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_06]: They looked different.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_06]: They're different.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_06]: And it's just so cool.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_04]: It's a wonderful breeding program, too.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they are of the tortoises.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_04]: It's really because they got some out of the out of the 15 or 18 species.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_04]: There's a couple that are extinct because people would eat them and stuff like that.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_04]: You know, ships should stop and but now they're rejuvenating the population.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_06]: It was cool.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_06]: It was really cool.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and then Easter Island, that's way down south.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that is way down there.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_01]: And it's all kind of by itself, too.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's 2000 miles off the coast.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_04]: We flew into Santiago, Chile, and then you catch another plane.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_04]: 2000 miles straight out into the ocean.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_06]: And if people we met from Chile there, they said, you know, this is beautiful here, but you need to go to southern Chile.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_06]: They, you know, and we want to do that someday, go down and go really long.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, they said it's just gorgeous.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_06]: And you know, we don't hear in America.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_06]: You don't see much about those countries and learn much about them.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_06]: And I want to go back and see your going and those Patagonia, that would be beautiful places to visit, I think.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_04]: That was part of the adventure that trip was.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_04]: We get all the way to Santiago and then clear out to Easter Island.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_04]: And I look at my apple air tags in our suitcase was in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_04]: It's like half a world away, you know?
- 46:28[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just some people at the airport there, you know?
- 46:32[SPEAKER_04]: Hang a rope.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_02]: Hang a rope.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_04]: Hang a rope.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_04]: the guy worked on it and he's up there there and I said okay how do we get him here and through through a lot of help he got him back and to our hotel the next day not bad.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_04]: No that was amazing.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_06]: We usually just travel with our black holes you know and so we carry on but this time we actually had a suitcase free so we thought we were supposed to a suitcase you know and um
- 46:58[SPEAKER_06]: I was smart.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: She had a done the carry on.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_06]: I was smart in my carry on.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_06]: I had a change of clothes, but you had forgotten to do that.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_04]: I can learn underwear for days on.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_04]: Doesn't matter.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: So the question I have is for everyone who's listening.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: there are people out there who haven't done a lot of travel and I feel like I'm one of those people even though I know it's not true if I make that listen to but I feel like I've not traveled in a while and you start to get this feeling like well what about the language barrier what if the food doesn't work for me you know what are the facilities going to be like it's easy to start talking yourself out of it and I think more so as we age we get stuck in our ways sometimes if we're not
- 47:45[SPEAKER_01]: So you've been doing a lot of travel, what advice do you give to people who are starting to wonder if it's worth it?
- 47:52[SPEAKER_04]: don't worry about it.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, luckily, about wherever we go, people speak some sort of English, whether it's good or bad, because we don't speak their language, but people are amazing.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_05]: And just, it's translators on your phone.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you got Google translate if you get desperate, but people are just so nice.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, everywhere we've gone, because we were in Southeast Asia, I don't know a year ago, or something like that.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_04]: And people are just so dog-on-nice.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_06]: And I think, too, you plan to plan a little bit for problems.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_06]: So, like, you know, I am like the, in my carry-on, I have the diarrhea medicine.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_06]: I have all kinds of little things that you plan for.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_06]: Okay, well, what happens if this happens?
- 48:35[SPEAKER_06]: Well, okay, I take some of modium.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_06]: You know, or what happens?
- 48:39[SPEAKER_06]: I have some granola bars along with me.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_06]: Would it,
- 48:41[SPEAKER_06]: I have food allergy so I had to be really careful everywhere I go that I don't need anything with red dye because I have allergic to that and I've been into the hot I mean I was in the hospital in Iceland because of it you know I mean wow you just you got to kind of roll with the punches but I guess don't be a person that lets it get under your nerves and then you're grouchy because there's nothing like a grouchy traveler I mean what's the point yeah I am every once
- 49:11[SPEAKER_06]: you know yeah no it's it's there's too much beauty and too much fun get over it you know don't be a grouchy traveler people respond and I tell this to Kurt because sometimes he gets frustrated in the airports I'm like people respond to a smile and thank you so much better
- 49:27[SPEAKER_06]: than when you're yelling at him.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_06]: Now, or when you're upset about something, and not that he does yell or you think that, but I am a very positive type of person anyway, and you know, okay, so we're here five hours extra.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_06]: Let's look around, you know?
- 49:43[SPEAKER_06]: Let's get our 10,000 steps here, you know?
- 49:45[SPEAKER_06]: And yeah.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_04]: We took my mother to Italy one time, and the trains in Italy are notorious for not running on schedule or going on strike,
- 49:54[SPEAKER_04]: Every time that would happen, my mom would say, oh, it's just another adventure.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, they can't learn that.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_04]: It was wonderful.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_04]: It was wonderful.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if you expect that things won't go as you expect, then it makes for a better trip.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's like I'm here to experience the experience.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: And people, you hear this all the time, but I think it's such a great thing.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if an airplane takes off from Seattle and wants to go to Miami,
- 50:20[SPEAKER_01]: it's never on course, that entire flight, it's constantly correcting, so it eventually gets to Miami, but it's never perfectly on course.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's the course corrections that get it there, and when we think of travel as it's a series of course corrections, it's an adventure of experiences.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: That I think we enjoy it more that way.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_06]: And you learned, you know, I think every
- 50:50[SPEAKER_06]: it's wonderful to learn at any age and you know even if you just if you look in fine one positive thing it's worth it that's cool so the name of your podcast again adventure retired all one word
- 51:03[SPEAKER_04]: The R.E.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_04]: at the end of adventure is the first part of the day of retired.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: So like I said, it's adventure tired if you can't remember.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think that's great.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's a fun name.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: So people can hear more about your adventures and other people's adventures there.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's lots of travel tips.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: You learn places you want to go.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_04]: And it's not just about travel, it's also about other things you'll caregiving, hobbies, and whatever, like we just the one that released yesterday, Lady was a big city lawyer, Chicago, New York, Washington, DC, and all that.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_04]: And once she got out of law, she's now running or working in an art studio in small town Iowa.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_04]: And there you go.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_04]: That's her second act, so to speak, but you know, she's doing something, and that's great.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's really, you know, life itself is the adventure.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you remember that.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_06]: Exactly.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_06]: Exactly.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_06]: Every day is an adventure.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_04]: Especially with her.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_04]: They just, oh man.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_06]: That love is like, this year is 40 years for us being married.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what I'll congratulate you.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's great.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_06]: It's been a, I don't remember the first 30, but yeah.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_06]: Maybe that's a hurry.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good thing, probably.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's time to get out the paper and start writing it down again.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, life is amazing.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_01]: Life is amazing.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: And let's finish up with this one.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: I want to hear from each of you what is a life well lived.
- 52:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is for the 20 somethings out there who are trying to answer that question for themselves.
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: You've got 40 years on these people.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_01]: What is a life well lived?
- 52:51[SPEAKER_06]: I think a life for me a life well lived is choosing a partner.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_06]: If you decide that's the route you want to go, that you can trust.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_06]: and will be there to help you when you struggle and push you into something that you might have to think about before you do it, but having a partner that pushes you but still supports you all the way.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm all about family.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_04]: We have two daughters that I just I see why people have 10, 15 kids.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_04]: I love my kids so much, you know, and to see them happy and going through life and
- 53:30[SPEAKER_04]: I, that's just everything for me.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

- 53:51[SPEAKER_06]: You have to earn it, or you have to work for it, and that's life, and that makes it sweeter.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_06]: It really does.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_06]: That delayed gratification, I don't care what it is, whether it's a $2,000 per sora tattoo, or a trip to Antarctica, or you know, whatever is that you want right now, if you could just delay it for half a year and work for it more, it's gonna make it sweeter.
