- 0:00Speaker 1: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof,
- 0:03Speaker 1: then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be
- 0:07Speaker 1: as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3.5 Dear God,
- 0:15Speaker 1: as I focus on today, I come against any lie
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the serpent, the devil, that would cause me to
- 0:22Speaker 1: believe that you are withholding something from me. Today I
- 0:27Speaker 1: will make the conscious decision to live in critical obedience
- 0:30Speaker 1: to you and to your word, Lord. I will not
- 0:34Speaker 1: allow pride to fracture my relationship with you. I will
- 0:38Speaker 1: not allow myself to go along with the lies that
- 0:42Speaker 1: I can be my own God and make decisions apart
- 0:45Speaker 1: from you. I decree and declare that even though I've
- 0:50Speaker 1: made mistakes, I will be quick to run to you, God,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and ask for forgiveness. because I know, like how you
- 0:59Speaker 1: covered Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 2 and 3
- 1:02Speaker 1: in their lowest moment, you sent your Son, Jesus, to
- 1:06Speaker 1: cover me in my lowest moments. Glory to God, that
- 1:11Speaker 1: even when I feel the weight of my bad decisions,
- 1:15Speaker 1: your presence is always with me and will always provide
- 1:20Speaker 1: a way of comfort for my heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:31Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:47Speaker 2: The tree that gives the knowledge of good and evil.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Before this story, we learned about the creation of Adam
- 1:55Speaker 2: and Eve. They lived together with God, cared for the land,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and experienced great joy. Yet there was still a choice
- 2:03Speaker 2: God gave them. Now we will learn more about that choice,
- 2:08Speaker 2: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge
- 2:10Speaker 2: of good and evil, and Adam and Eve's temptation to
- 2:14Speaker 2: choose against God, inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:24Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:26Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:29Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:33Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:35Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:39Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:41Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:44Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:46Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:50Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:54Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 2:57Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:04Speaker 3: you for your support. Today we are once again in
- 3:08Speaker 3: the Garden of Eden. God's work of creation has culminated
- 3:12Speaker 3: in the very first wedding. Adam and Eve are together,
- 3:15Speaker 3: naked and without shame before each other and before God.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I think because of the effects of sin, you and
- 3:21Speaker 3: I can't fully comprehend just how amazing life was in
- 3:25Speaker 3: the garden for Adam and Eve. God walked with them.
- 3:29Speaker 3: And after all, it was His world that He made
- 3:32Speaker 3: to enjoy with His creation, Adam and Eve and God
- 3:37Speaker 3: in the garden together. That was all about to change, though.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Today's story is about deception, bad choices, broken relationships. It
- 3:47Speaker 3: all starts when a fourth character enters the scene, a
- 3:51Speaker 3: serpent bent on ruining what God had made. God spoke
- 3:54Speaker 3: life and truth. The serpent spoke lies and death. His
- 3:59Speaker 3: target was none other than God's greatest creation, mankind. You
- 4:04Speaker 3: remember the choice Adam was given by God? Two trees.
- 4:08Speaker 3: One gave everything good, eternal life. The other, death. Adam
- 4:13Speaker 3: and Eve knew the rules. They were free to eat
- 4:16Speaker 3: of any tree except for that one. But the serpent,
- 4:20Speaker 3: the enemy, the devil, wedged himself into their minds, casting
- 4:24Speaker 3: doubt on God. Listen today to how the devil used
- 4:28Speaker 3: doubt and pride to tempt Adam and Eve to sin.
- 4:31Speaker 3: The choice was ultimately theirs, but he nudged them in
- 4:35Speaker 3: that direction. The results were nothing short of catastrophic, and
- 4:40Speaker 3: they reverberate through your own life to this very day.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Let's hear now from Genesis 3.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Adam and Eve lived naked with one another in the garden.
- 4:52Speaker 2: There was no need to feel ashamed of anything, since
- 4:55Speaker 2: their hearts had not been exposed to evil. They lived
- 4:59Speaker 2: together in spiritual, emotional, and physical bliss, and they were
- 5:03Speaker 2: close to God. Yet in the garden there was a
- 5:06Speaker 2: lurking evil in the form of a serpent. He was crafty.
- 5:11Speaker 2: and a deceitful messenger determined to lure man away from
- 5:15Speaker 2: God's loving presence. While God spoke life into existence, the
- 5:21Speaker 2: serpent spoke death, his words directed towards Eve trying to
- 5:25Speaker 2: twist and deceive. He approached her saying,' Did God really
- 5:31Speaker 2: say you could not eat from any tree in the garden?'
- 5:35Speaker 2: Eve replied,' We may eat of the fruit of the
- 5:38Speaker 2: trees in the garden,' However, God instructed us not to
- 5:42Speaker 2: eat of the fruit of the tree of good and evil,
- 5:45Speaker 2: nor shall we touch it, lest we die. The serpent,
- 5:50Speaker 2: knowing that pride was the path away from God, said,
- 5:53Speaker 2: You will not surely die. God knows that when you
- 5:57Speaker 2: eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you
- 6:00Speaker 2: will be like him, knowing all good and evil. This
- 6:05Speaker 2: enticed Eve. and has enticed humanity for all generations after her.
- 6:11Speaker 2: The possibility of being our own gods has directed the
- 6:14Speaker 2: path of evil for thousands of years. Eve, filled with
- 6:19Speaker 2: a deep curiosity and desire to be like God herself,
- 6:23Speaker 2: ate the fruit. She did this with Adam beside her.
- 6:28Speaker 2: She looked to Adam, the man supposed to care for
- 6:31Speaker 2: her heart, and gave him.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The fruit also.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Adam saw the fruit, and saw that it was good
- 6:37Speaker 2: to eat, so he ate it too. By eating the fruit,
- 6:41Speaker 2: they sacrificed eternal intimacy with the one who had breathed
- 6:45Speaker 2: life into them. At this moment, the relationship humanity had
- 6:50Speaker 2: with God was fractured. Their eyes were opened to the
- 6:53Speaker 2: existence of evil, and their hearts were exposed to sin
- 6:58Speaker 2: and the shame it caused. No longer cloaked with God's righteousness,
- 7:02Speaker 2: Adam and Eve saw their nakedness for the first time
- 7:05Speaker 2: and were ashamed. Their physical nakedness represented a deep spiritual nakedness.
- 7:12Speaker 2: They desperately looked to cover themselves up with leaves, although
- 7:16Speaker 2: no clothes would ever cover their true shame. God was
- 7:20Speaker 2: walking through the quiet of the garden. Adam and Eve
- 7:23Speaker 2: heard him and immediately hid themselves. God, knowing full well
- 7:28Speaker 2: what had happened, called out, Adam, where are you? Adam replied,
- 7:34Speaker 2: Here I am. I am naked and afraid for you
- 7:38Speaker 2: to see me. Adam's fear of being seen naked revealed
- 7:43Speaker 2: a much deeper separation between him and God. God, with
- 7:47Speaker 2: both intense anger and loving compassion, said, Who told you
- 7:52Speaker 2: that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree
- 7:55Speaker 2: I commanded you not to eat? Adam fell deeper and
- 7:59Speaker 2: deeper into his own shame and tragedy. He pointed towards Eve,
- 8:03Speaker 2: his companion, and the woman he was meant to love
- 8:06Speaker 2: and protect, and threw blame towards her. The woman you
- 8:10Speaker 2: gave me, she gave me the fruit. Eve was falling
- 8:14Speaker 2: into the same self-loathing and pride, and now left alone
- 8:18Speaker 2: by her husband, she pointed to the serpent and said,
- 8:22Speaker 2: The serpent deceived me, and I ate. God looked to
- 8:27Speaker 2: the serpent and said, Because of this you are cursed
- 8:31Speaker 2: to crawl and eat dust for the rest of your days.
- 8:35Speaker 2: One day I will make things right, and a son
- 8:38Speaker 2: of Eve will come and you will bruise his heel,
- 8:41Speaker 2: but he will crush your head. This would be the
- 8:44Speaker 2: foreshadowing of Jesus coming to put an end to evil
- 8:48Speaker 2: on the cross. Then God turned to Adam and Eve,
- 8:52Speaker 2: lamenting their choice to live as their own gods. Their
- 8:56Speaker 2: choice would not come without consequences. God said to Eve,
- 9:01Speaker 2: The blessing life will not come without struggle, and childbirth
- 9:06Speaker 2: will come with great pain. You will also struggle continually
- 9:10Speaker 2: with your husband and resent his leadership over you. He
- 9:14Speaker 2: then turned to Adam, Because you listened to your wife
- 9:18Speaker 2: and ate from the tree I commanded you not to,
- 9:22Speaker 2: curse it is the ground that you work on. You
- 9:25Speaker 2: will have to work every day for the rest of
- 9:27Speaker 2: your life to earn your food. By the sweat of
- 9:30Speaker 2: your face you shall eat bread until you die, for
- 9:34Speaker 2: you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Adam
- 9:39Speaker 2: and Eve's unity with God was fractured. Their knowledge of
- 9:43Speaker 2: evil caused their hearts and their bodies to feel pain.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yet even in their disobedience, God's love for them remained,
- 9:52Speaker 2: and would always remain. He killed an animal and made
- 9:55Speaker 2: clothes for them. An innocent life was taken so they
- 9:59Speaker 2: could be warm. God cast Adam and Eve from the
- 9:51Speaker 2: Garden of Eden and put an angel with a fiery
- 9:52Speaker 2: sword to keep them away from the Tree of Life forever.
- 9:55Speaker 2: But God's story to love people is not over. He
- 10:19Speaker 2: would remain with them and the story of redemption would
- 10:22Speaker 2: begin to unfold before their eyes.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Doubt and pride. Those are the most powerful weapons the
- 10:32Speaker 3: crafty serpent used to fracture the perfect relationship God had
- 10:36Speaker 3: with his creation. In one fell swoop, he got humanity
- 10:40Speaker 3: to question God's word and to desire to be equal
- 10:44Speaker 3: to God. Listen to what Genesis 3, 4, and 5 says.
- 10:49Speaker 3: The serpent said to the woman, you certainly will not die.
- 10:53Speaker 3: For God knows that on the day you eat from it,
- 10:56Speaker 3: your eyes will be open and you will become like God,
- 11:00Speaker 3: knowing good and evil. He's saying, there's no way God
- 11:05Speaker 3: told you the truth, right? You won't die from eating
- 11:08Speaker 3: that fruit. There's the doubt. Satan still uses that tactic today.
- 11:13Speaker 3: How many problems are we facing because we don't take
- 11:16Speaker 3: God at his word? Too many to count. But then
- 11:20Speaker 3: he takes it another step further. He entices them with
- 11:23Speaker 3: a lie that he himself believed and that got him
- 11:27Speaker 3: removed from paradise, from heaven. You will be like God.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So now the serpent is tempting Adam and Eve, the creation,
- 11:37Speaker 3: to want equality with the creator. He knows this won't work.
- 11:40Speaker 3: He knows what will happen. And it does happen. But
- 11:44Speaker 3: there's one more thing I want you to notice here.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Remember that up until now, Adam and Eve have only
- 11:49Speaker 3: known good and very good. They already had that in
- 11:54Speaker 3: heart and in hand. So when the devil offers them
- 11:58Speaker 3: the opportunity to know good and evil, what he was
- 12:00Speaker 3: really offering is evil. That's what they don't know yet.
- 12:05Speaker 3: This is an important lesson for you and me. God
- 12:09Speaker 3: already gives us every good and perfect thing. Sin and
- 12:12Speaker 3: Satan tries to tell us that there is more good
- 12:15Speaker 3: to be had, but all we are really getting is evil.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Adam and Eve take the bait, eat the fruit, and
- 12:22Speaker 3: sever the relationship with God. Now they have knowledge of evil.
- 12:28Speaker 3: The freedom from shame, it is no more. They are
- 12:31Speaker 3: naked and ashamed and afraid and aware that they've really
- 12:35Speaker 3: messed up. So they hide from God, but it's all futile.
- 12:40Speaker 3: God knows what they've done, and now it's time to
- 12:42Speaker 3: pay the price. He confronts them, and we see two
- 12:45Speaker 3: relationships broken between God and mankind and within mankind itself.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Adam and Eve, two parts of one flesh, blame each
- 12:55Speaker 3: other and blame God. They simply cannot remain in the garden,
- 13:00Speaker 3: eating from the tree of life. For you see, death,
- 13:03Speaker 3: though tragic, is ultimately a gift because it is how
- 13:07Speaker 3: they will once again be fully restored to fellowship with God.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Were they to stay in the garden, they would suffer
- 13:12Speaker 3: eternal separation. As the story ends, Adam and Eve are
- 13:17Speaker 3: going to face the harsh reality of life outside the garden,
- 13:21Speaker 3: of toil and trouble, of sweat and tears. This was
- 13:25Speaker 3: never God's heart for them, but he does not abandon
- 13:28Speaker 3: them in the consequences of their sin. Ever the loving father,
- 13:33Speaker 3: God first clothes them. And this requires a blood sacrifice,
- 13:38Speaker 3: the death of an animal. It's only a temporary covering,
- 13:41Speaker 3: but it foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice Christ would one day make.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that despite our sin and
- 13:50Speaker 3: rejection of you, you have provided a sacrifice to cover us,
- 13:55Speaker 3: the blood of your Son, Jesus. Thank you for this
- 13:59Speaker 3: passage today and how it shows us the tactics of
- 14:01Speaker 3: the enemy those that he would use to cause us
- 14:04Speaker 3: to sin and to stumble. Help us always to trust
- 14:08Speaker 3: in you and your word. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank
- 14:13Speaker 3: you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
