- 0:03Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Ten minutes like the lightest make I've ever held.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Oh you're going to open eye you all right? He
- 0:09Speaker 3: had all the good good questions.
- 0:11Speaker 1: So I'm pubbied off you. That's right, it's all right,
- 0:20Speaker 1: all right?
- 0:20Speaker 2: What's right?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Repons?
- 0:24Speaker 2: The building looks like a cruise you.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Okay?
- 0:29Speaker 2: All right?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us for here today at Good Thing
- 0:32Speaker 1: twenty twenty four in Melbourne, Jimmy and I are speaking
- 0:34Speaker 1: with the one and only Kerry King.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Kerry, thanks for joining the cheers. Good to be here.
- 0:39Speaker 1: How pleasure to have you here, my friends. So you've
- 0:42Speaker 1: you've wrapped up a couple of side shows already with
- 0:44Speaker 1: Mastering on in Sydney and Melbourne. Mate, So it's not
- 0:47Speaker 1: that nice sort of way to ease into the tour,
- 0:48Speaker 1: you know, just doing a couple of shows like that
- 0:50Speaker 1: before hitting the festival.
- 0:51Speaker 4: On is it's going to make the festival extremely easy
- 0:54Speaker 4: because we were playing like seventy five minutes and today
- 0:57Speaker 4: we're playing fifty, so we don't even break a swing.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How does it feel to be back in Australia.
- 1:03Speaker 4: A few years for I love Australia, dude, Yeah, I haven't.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I haven't been here since twenty nineteen. Very good to
- 1:10Speaker 4: be back. I wish we could come here more often actually,
- 1:12Speaker 4: but you know, hey, I.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Mean they're gonna put out more music, so you want
- 1:16Speaker 2: us back. Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 3: So how does it feel like these days playing shows
- 1:24Speaker 3: like as a new solo project as opposed to like
- 1:26Speaker 3: the multi generational legacy like Slayter is? Like, is there
- 1:30Speaker 3: a different vibe therefoil?
- 1:32Speaker 2: There's definitely a difference.
- 1:34Speaker 4: It It's kind of got the feeling of, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 4: when we started Slayer kind of except I have a
- 1:41Speaker 4: whole career in my in my week, you know what
- 1:43Speaker 4: I mean. But the yeah, the excitement is is every
- 1:48Speaker 4: bit like when Slayer came out. You know, we're all
- 1:50Speaker 4: super excited to be playing together. Me and Mark hang
- 1:54Speaker 4: out every day off, so it's it's just getting used
- 1:58Speaker 4: to your new friends, really, I mean, in.
- 2:00Speaker 2: The music's business as usual. It's a lot of fun.
- 2:06Speaker 4: The turnouts have been great, the response has been great,
- 2:09Speaker 4: so you know, we're just digging it. Yea.
- 2:11Speaker 3: And outside of the shows, how's luck your day to
- 2:14Speaker 3: day life?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Now?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Is it different that you're in your own project than
- 2:18Speaker 3: not in this big kind of what's that commercial monster?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I mean, not in a nice way.
- 2:23Speaker 2: But how's that changed.
- 2:26Speaker 4: It's it's just in a nutshell, it's just coming in
- 2:30Speaker 4: with a mindset that I'm not in charge, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 4: because with Slayer, I'm always in charge. So I've been
- 2:36Speaker 4: in charge for the last you know, at least twenty
- 2:38Speaker 4: five years when we you know, started headlining and just
- 2:41Speaker 4: continued to headline. But you know, I never had a
- 2:44Speaker 4: big attitude anyway. So it's it's again business as usual.
- 2:49Speaker 4: But you know, I don't come in expecting, you know,
- 2:52Speaker 4: everything to be you know, like platinum, so to speak.
- 2:57Speaker 4: If things aren't exactly right, like, it doesn't matter, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 4: it doesn't matter. Just we're here to play and and
- 3:05Speaker 4: once we do that, we'll have some drinks and get
- 3:06Speaker 4: that all out.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that brings to your next question. I had a
- 3:10Speaker 3: bad production values between you know, the slashes and.
- 3:14Speaker 2: What you're doing now.
- 3:15Speaker 3: So it is a more raw kind of thing now because.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It is fresh, very very raw.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Because everything we do en Slayer costs a lot of money,
- 3:24Speaker 4: you know, and fire being the most expensive and the
- 3:27Speaker 4: biggest difference. We certainly can't afford to be rolling with Pyro,
- 3:32Speaker 4: although we have Pyro today ironically, So yeah, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 4: a much bigger show, you know, interchangeable backdrops and ship
- 3:42Speaker 4: burning on stage we got we got a backdropper too,
- 3:46Speaker 4: and like I said, today we have fire, but for
- 3:48Speaker 4: the other two we don't.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And we're just up there raging.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Actually got a little waller. Guys shot have make some
- 3:55Speaker 3: really good obvious at the rist is guy playing rining
- 4:00Speaker 3: blood and it was writing and you had the red
- 4:02Speaker 3: launch one.
- 4:05Speaker 4: You'd be surprised how often that happens over outside.
- 4:10Speaker 3: That wasn't on my bastart. Just I was thinking about
- 4:12Speaker 3: the production stuff. But you racally had a switch from
- 4:16Speaker 3: basse a rich today guitars, how's that going for you?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Excellent? You know they're there.
- 4:23Speaker 4: You know now that I've been there since about eighteen
- 4:26Speaker 4: or nineteen. You know, we've made some new shapes, we
- 4:30Speaker 4: made some new designs, we made some new inlay designs
- 4:34Speaker 4: for the fret board, and you know that I'm impressed
- 4:37Speaker 4: with the quality. And I've met the actual dude that
- 4:43Speaker 4: that runs the wood machine. So I've been to the factory.
- 4:48Speaker 4: There was a change in the upper echelon in Dean
- 4:51Speaker 4: and I just said, listen, I want to make sure
- 4:52Speaker 4: the guys that were making my guitar still are because
- 4:55Speaker 4: they do excellent stuff.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So I'm super happy to be there.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Did you have to to adjust your playing style at
- 5:02Speaker 3: all with the new guitars or did they pretty well fine.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Cheering them to Yeah, they're they're essentially copies of each other.
- 5:11Speaker 4: You know, fret boards are not fret board, but the
- 5:14Speaker 4: neck width and stuff is. You know, I I'm meticulous
- 5:18Speaker 4: like this.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I've taken my chrometers and done neck measurements and say
- 5:21Speaker 2: make it like that. I didn't do that with Dean.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I just said this feels about right.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a certain different something.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it's stuff you get used to. It's like playing
- 5:30Speaker 4: a Kayler or Floyd Rose. You know, you don't go
- 5:33Speaker 4: back and forth. You start with one and you stick
- 5:35Speaker 4: with it.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll throw it back.
- 5:43Speaker 1: If you're released David album from Hell rise back in May,
- 5:46Speaker 1: like you were going to have a prettyvious scene audience.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But was it overall received better than you expected?
- 5:52Speaker 4: It all? I was pretty sure about the content. You know,
- 5:59Speaker 4: we'd worked on it, me and Paul for a long
- 6:01Speaker 4: long time. I mean some of this stuff, you'd be
- 6:05Speaker 4: amazed how long I keep rifts like residue. I think
- 6:09Speaker 4: the body of that song is over twenty years old,
- 6:12Speaker 4: but I just didn't have the friends to marry it
- 6:14Speaker 4: to to make it a good song. But I knew
- 6:16Speaker 4: I liked it, so I just kept it around. I
- 6:19Speaker 4: think that was I think that's been around since the
- 6:21Speaker 4: last time Paul was in the band, and here it
- 6:24Speaker 4: finally came out. So you know, that's an odd case.
- 6:28Speaker 4: But there was leftovers from Repentless. There's stuff I've written
- 6:31Speaker 4: since Repentless, and a lot of stuff left over from
- 6:36Speaker 4: from How I Rise. It's going to make up most
- 6:37Speaker 4: of the record too, whenever we get to that. But
- 6:41Speaker 4: you know, I knew I'd played for some close friends
- 6:43Speaker 4: and that won't lie to me.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah, And I felt really strong about it, and all
- 6:51Speaker 4: the feedback I got from my friends was you don't
- 6:55Speaker 4: know how good this is. And I'm like, well, I
- 6:57Speaker 4: think it's pretty good, but you know, time will tell.
- 7:00Speaker 1: We had our first argument over it, like over who
- 7:02Speaker 1: was going to get to review it, and we both
- 7:04Speaker 1: came in the same completion that its like it is
- 7:07Speaker 1: a slam of metal.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Quickness tool that makes me happy. You know.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I just I just got an email or text the
- 7:15Speaker 4: other day that we were the only metal band on
- 7:17Speaker 4: Rolling Stones top one hundred. I'm like, that's pretty cool.
- 7:23Speaker 3: And then you made an awesome choice with vocalist.
- 7:25Speaker 4: To right, And the best thing we did was keep
- 7:28Speaker 4: that all quiet until we announced it when we wanted
- 7:32Speaker 4: to announce it, because the speculation on the internet was
- 7:35Speaker 4: crazy and nine times out of ten everybody would say
- 7:39Speaker 4: Phil was going to do it, and I knew ages
- 7:41Speaker 4: ago Phil wasn't going to do it, but I didn't
- 7:43Speaker 4: tell anybody to keep the hot down.
- 7:47Speaker 3: So we was having like Mark in the band, like
- 7:50Speaker 3: he's such a kind of multifaceted vocalist, like he can
- 7:53Speaker 3: go all over the place. Is there any kind of
- 7:57Speaker 3: possible songwriting opportunities there to maybe.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Use some more.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I'm I'm totally open to writing with with Phil, with
- 8:07Speaker 4: whoever has music or lyric ideas. It's just with all
- 8:12Speaker 4: my downtime for record one, I had so much shit,
- 8:16Speaker 4: you know, and that might spill over to record too,
- 8:19Speaker 4: being all mine as well. I'm not totalitarian like that.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I want that to be the case. That's that's the
- 8:26Speaker 4: furthest thing from the truth. So whenever we start working
- 8:29Speaker 4: on record too, if anybody's got ideas, I'm definitely gonna
- 8:32Speaker 4: listen to him and Mark.
- 8:34Speaker 2: The one thing about Mark, we were here before he
- 8:36Speaker 2: got the gig.
- 8:37Speaker 4: He was doing demos with us for like eight nine months,
- 8:40Speaker 4: just because you're my friend, and you know I started
- 8:43Speaker 4: the first session. I'm like, listen, if we're gonna run
- 8:46Speaker 4: with this, we got to recreate you. I want people
- 8:48Speaker 4: to hear you sing on my album and not know
- 8:50Speaker 4: it's you.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And I think we did pretty good.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah, fantastic from upstage. Thanks very much for you to
- 9:02Speaker 1: carry absolutely absolutely preasure speaking.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Great to be here.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Don't you want I to get a little happy snapped
- 9:09Speaker 1: you before you go.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Off? Kerry good.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Very much, Thank you?
- 9:31Speaker 3: They are they really did you want to try and
- 9:34Speaker 3: squeeze one from that car?
- 9:45Speaker 2: That is amazing.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Appreciate you, Caro, thank you very much.
- 9:52Speaker 2: How could.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Without killing audio? Seventh Jed, I was gonna confirmed because
- 10:05Speaker 1: not too said myself, Well, what anyone when getting er thirty,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I might hear you.
- 10:16Speaker 2: We got a Mark and kept gown
