- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here it is, Boxing Day, the 26th of
- 0:17December, and it is the day of the deep breath, right?
- 0:22You've made it through Christmas, you've celebrated,
- 0:24you've eaten until your buttons popped, and now you've probably
- 0:29had a sleep in and today looks a lot more chill.
- 0:32That is my hope for you. And as you take a little easier
- 0:36today we are going to begin another journey together.
- 0:41Today we are going to start reading through the book of
- 0:44First Kings. Oh, what a crackerjack this is.
- 0:47This is just classic Old Testament storytelling.
- 0:52And this is the story that started in the book of Samuel
- 0:55because the book of Samuel and the two books of kings together
- 0:58are called you ready for this, the Deuteronomystic history that
- 1:02is a word and a half. So while Samuel told the story
- 1:06of God setting up this Davidic covenant through David and
- 1:10following the length of his reign, now we see the kings
- 1:14after him, 20 kings in the north, 20 kings in the South,
- 1:18and most of them dreadful. So this this is a book that
- 1:22tells of these kings failings again and again and again.
- 1:26And really these books are answering the question that the
- 1:29Israelites were asking at the time of its writing.
- 1:32How do we end up in exile? How did we end up captured and
- 1:37taken away from the land that God gave us?
- 1:40So this book does a very unusual thing in that it tells the
- 1:43shortcomings of the kings. Normally all the writings of the
- 1:46ancient Near East talk up the kings and how good they were.
- 1:50But no, this author says how bad they were and how much they
- 1:54failed from a theological God centred perspective.
- 1:58And so we will hear these stories from David's rule all
- 2:02the way through to disgrace and exile.
- 2:05That is the story of first and 2nd Kings and what a winner it
- 2:10is. So why don't we begin this?
- 2:12You ready? Oh yes, strap yourself in and
- 2:14let's begin reading First Kings Chapter 1.
- 2:27King David was now very old and no matter how many blankets
- 2:31covered him, he could not keep warm.
- 2:34So his advisers told him, let us find a young virgin to wait on
- 2:38you and look after you my Lord. She will lie in your arms and
- 2:42keep you warm. So they searched throughout the
- 2:45land of Israel for a beautiful girl, and they found Abishag
- 2:49from Shunam and brought her to the king.
- 2:52The girl was very beautiful, and she looked after the king and
- 2:55took care of him, but the king had no sexual relations with
- 2:59her. About that time, David's son
- 3:02Adonijah, whose mother was Haggath, began boasting.
- 3:06I will make myself king. So provided himself with
- 3:10Chariots and charioteers and recruited 50 men to run in front
- 3:14of him. Now his father, King David had
- 3:17never disciplined him at any time, even by asking why are you
- 3:21doing that? Adonijah had been born next
- 3:24after Absalom and he was very handsome.
- 3:28Adonijah took Joab, son of Jeroiah and Abiatha the priest
- 3:33into his confidence and they agreed to help him become king.
- 3:37But Zadok the priest, Banaya son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet,
- 3:44Shimai Ray, and David's personal bodyguard refused to support
- 3:48Adonijah. Adonijah went to the Stone of
- 3:52Zahelith near the spring of Enrogal, where he sacrificed
- 3:56sheep, cattle and fattened calves.
- 3:59He invited all his brothers, the other sons of King David, and
- 4:02all the royal officials of Judah, but he did not invite
- 4:06Nathan the prophet, or Banaya, or the King's bodyguard, or his
- 4:10brother Solomon. Then David went to Bathsheba,
- 4:14Solomon's mother, and asked her, Haven't you heard that Haggoth's
- 4:18son Adonijah has made himself king, and our Lord David doesn't
- 4:23even know about it? If you want to save your own
- 4:26life and the life of your son Solomon, follow my advice.
- 4:30Go at once to King David and say to him, my Lord the King, didn't
- 4:35you make a vow and say to me your son Solomon will surely be
- 4:39the next king and will sit on my throne.
- 4:42Then why has Ananiah become king?
- 4:45And while you are still talking with him, I will come and
- 4:48confirm everything you have said.
- 4:51So Bathsheba went into the King's bedroom.
- 4:54He was very old now, and Abashag was taking care of him.
- 4:58Bathsheba bowed down before the king.
- 5:01What can I do for you? He asked her.
- 5:05She replied, My Lord, you made a vow before the Lord your God
- 5:10when you said to me, your son Solomon will surely be the next
- 5:14king and will sit on my throne. But instead Adonijah has made
- 5:19himself king, and my Lord the king does not even know about
- 5:23it. He has sacrificed many cattle,
- 5:26fattened calves and sheep, and he has invited all the King's
- 5:30sons to attend the celebration. He also invited Abiatha the
- 5:34priest, and Joab, the commander of the army, but he did not
- 5:38invite your servant Solomon. And now, my Lord the king, all
- 5:42Israel is waiting for you to announce who will become king
- 5:46after you. If you do not act, my son
- 5:49Solomon and I will be treated as criminals as soon as my Lord the
- 5:52king has died. While she was still speaking
- 5:56with the king, Nathan the Prophet arrived.
- 5:58The King's officials told him. Nathan, the Prophet is here to
- 6:02see you. Nathan went in and bowed before
- 6:05the king with his face to the ground.
- 6:08Nathan asked. My Lord the king, have you
- 6:12decided that Adonijah will be the next king and that he will
- 6:15sit on your throne to day? He has sacrificed many cattle,
- 6:19fattened calves and sheep, and he has invited all the King's
- 6:23sons to attend the celebration. He also invited the commanders
- 6:27of the army and Abiatha the priest.
- 6:30They are feasting and drinking with him and shouting.
- 6:32Long live King Adonijah. But he did not invite me or
- 6:37Zadok the priest, or Benaiah, or your servant Solomon.
- 6:41Has my Lord the king really done this without letting any of his
- 6:45officials know who should be the next king?
- 6:48King David responded, call Bathsheba.
- 6:52So she came back in and stood before the king, and the king
- 6:55repeated his vow. As surely as the Lord lives who
- 7:00has rescued me from every danger, your son Solomon will be
- 7:05the next king and will sit on my throne this very day, just as I
- 7:11vowed to you before the Lord the God of Israel.
- 7:15Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground before
- 7:18the king and exclaimed, May my Lord King David live forever.
- 7:25Then King David ordered call Zadok the priest, Nathan the
- 7:29prophet, and Banaya son of Jehoiada.
- 7:33When they came into the King's presence, the king said to them,
- 7:37take Solomon and my officials down to Gehon Spring.
- 7:42Solomon is to ride on my own mule.
- 7:45Then Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him
- 7:49king over Israel, Blow the ram's horn and shout, Long live King
- 7:55Solomon. Then escort him back here, and
- 7:59he will sit on my throne. He will succeed me as king, for
- 8:04I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.
- 8:09Amen. Benaiah son of Jehoiada replied.
- 8:13May the Lord, the God of my Lord the King decree that it happen,
- 8:18and may the Lord be with Solomon, as he has been with
- 8:21you, my Lord the king, and may he make Solomon's reign even
- 8:25greater than yours. So Zadok the priest, Nathan the
- 8:29prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the King's
- 8:32bodyguard, took Solomon down to Gehon's spring, with Solomon
- 8:37riding on King David's own mule. There Zadok the priest took the
- 8:42flask of olive oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon
- 8:46with the oil. Then they sounded the ram's
- 8:49horn, and all the people shouted.
- 8:52Long live King Solomon, and all the people followed Solomon into
- 8:57Jerusalem, playing flutes and shouting for joy.
- 9:00The celebration was so joyous and noisy that the earth shook
- 9:04with the sound. Adonijah and his guests heard
- 9:08the celebrating and shouting just as they were finishing
- 9:11their banquet. When Joab heard the sound of the
- 9:14ram's horn, he asked what's going on?
- 9:17Why is the city in such an uproar?
- 9:19And while he was still speaking, Jonathan son of Abiatha the
- 9:24priest arrived. Come in, Adonijah said to him,
- 9:28For you are a good man, you must have good news.
- 9:32Not at all, Jonathan replied. Our Lord King David has just
- 9:37declared Solomon king. The king sent him down to
- 9:41Gihon's spring with Zodak the priest, Nathan the prophet, and
- 9:45Benaiah son of Jehoiada, protected by the King's
- 9:48bodyguard. They had him ride on the King's
- 9:52own mule, and Zadok and Nathan have anointed him at Gihon's
- 9:56spring as the new king. They have just returned and the
- 10:00whole city is celebrating and rejoicing.
- 10:04That's what all the noise is about.
- 10:05What's more, Solomon is now sitting on the royal throne as
- 10:10king, and all the royal officials have gone to King
- 10:13David and congratulated him, saying, May your God make
- 10:18Solomon's fame even greater than your own, and may Solomon's
- 10:22reign be even greater than yours.
- 10:26Then the king bowed his head in worship as he lay in his bed,
- 10:30and he said, Praise the Lord the God of Israel, who today has
- 10:35chosen a successor to sit on my throne while I am still alive to
- 10:41see it. Then all of Adonijah's guests
- 10:45jumped up in panic from the banquet table and quickly
- 10:48scattered. Adonijah was afraid of Solomon,
- 10:51so he rushed to the sacred tent and grabbed on the horns of the
- 10:55altar. Word soon reached Solomon that
- 10:58Adonijah had seized the horns of the altar in fear, and that he
- 11:02was pleading. Let King Solomon swear to Day
- 11:04that he will not kill me, Solomon replied.
- 11:09If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hare on his head
- 11:13will be touched, but if he makes trouble, he will die.
- 11:19Sir, King Solomon summoned Adonijah and there brought him
- 11:22down from the altar. He came and bowed respectfully
- 11:26before King Solomon, who dismissed him, saying, Go on
- 11:30home, our Lord. As we begin going through this
- 11:42long story of the rulers of Israel and Judah, we are so
- 11:48aware that as we read of the foibles and failures of these
- 11:51kings and their courts, that this was never your plan for
- 11:55them. Your plan was for you to be
- 11:58their king and for them to be your people.
- 12:02But you allowed these people, and often you allow us the
- 12:06freedom to follow our own thoughts and our own desires,
- 12:10even when they may be leading us astray.
- 12:13You are a generous God, gracious to us, giving us such freedoms.
- 12:19So Lord, I pray as we begin on this journey, hearing these
- 12:22stories of these kings, that you continually mould our hearts to
- 12:28always, always draw us back to You and to sit under your rule
- 12:33as our King, because nothing we do as imperfect humans is ever
- 12:38going to measure up to you and your love for us.
- 12:42We love you and we praise you, and we pray all these things in
- 12:46the saving name of our King Jesus, Amen.
