- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the I'm team series and your daily influence and today I'm going to be talking about how we can start to rebuild cohesion in our organizations as we come through stay with or out of this fragmented hybrid remote business structure that we all live in.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: some of us more than others.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, over the past several years, the workplace has changed dramatically.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Remote work, hybrid schedules, distracted teams.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know, these models are now part of how many organizations operate on a regular basis.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: Technology has made it easier than ever to communicate with a video calls messaging platforms project management tools and shared work spaces that allow teams to collaborate from almost anywhere in the world.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: I know I do it when I travel, we collaborate with people.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: on an everyday basis in multiple time zones, multiple continents.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: But here's the leadership challenge that we all face.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: Connection tools are not the same as cohesion.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: Many organizations in a year experience what I call the digital illusion of connection.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone is online, everyone is reachable, but alignment, trust, and shared culture are slowly weakening.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: this week we have our team coming here from around the country and we still have to have people connected because they're so far away.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully we can do this better.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: But in reality, culture does not come from proximity.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: Culture comes from behavior that is repeated visibly and consistently.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: So today, I'm daily influenced.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about how leaders rebuild
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: If I individual responsibility becomes even more important when teams are dispersed.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: So let's, there's this illusion of connection.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Modern tools create this feeling of connection.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: But that always producing real alignment.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Teams are in Slack channels or Teams channels or some other communication channel.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: There aren't Zoom calls.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: Their setting message is all day long, but constant communication does not automatically produce clarity or trust.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: In many cases, it actually creates just noise.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: People begin working in parallel, rather than together.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: Assumptions replace discussion and decisions become fragmented across conversations.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: Smart leadership requires something different.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: It requires structured clarity.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: Structured clarity is clear objectives, measurable progress, and shared visibility into priorities.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: Technology should support alignment, not replace it.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: And look, Cohesion also comes from structural habits.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: In dispersed organizations, Cohesion cannot be left to chance.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: It must be built through intentional structured habits.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: This includes simple but disciplined practices, consistent leadership communication, clear meeting rhythms.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: transparent goal tracking and objective understanding and visible accountability.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: These structures create what smart management calls operational visibility.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: When teams can clearly see what matters, who owns what, and how progress is measured, alignment begins to return.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: Cohesion is not created by forcing people back into the office.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: It is created by building systems that reinforce shared direction.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Individual responsibility increases in distributed teams.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a good thing.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: Influence becomes more individual.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: When people are not physically together, something very important changes.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: influence becomes more individual.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: Each person's behavior becomes a visible signal to the rest of the organization.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: Do they respond with clarity or confusion?
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: Do they follow through on commitments?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Do they communicate early when something is off-track?
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: In a distributed environment, these behaviors define the culture.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: This is why in the IM team series, we emphasize that organizations are shaped by the individual influence of their people.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: The culture of a team is not what is written in a handbook.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: It is the repeated behavior individual choose to demonstrate every day.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: Distance doesn't remove responsibility, in many ways, and increases it.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: We all, I think, have to come to the reality that remote and hybrid work are not temporary anymore.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: They are now part of how many out organizations and individuals will operate.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: but leadership not confuse access with alignment.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: Technology can connect people.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: Only discipline and behavior create culture.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: If organizations want cohesion in a distributed world, they must build structural clarity, visible accountability, and individual responsibility, because culture is not built by proximity.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: Culture is built by behaviors, people repeat, visibly and consistently over time, and that influence begins with each of us.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for joining us again on another episode of Daily Influence.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: We look forward to being with you again tomorrow.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: Have a great day.
