- 2:43commuters using the MBTA will experience a significant
- 2:46change on Tuesday as South Station unveils its
- 2:50new fare gate system. Beginning on that day,
- 2:54commuter rail passengers must tap or scan their
- 2:56train tickets to access the track area. The T
- 3:00and its operator, Keyless Commuter Services,
- 3:04have completed the installation of 40 gates,
- 3:07including 11 wider ones for wheelchairs and strollers.
- 3:11While fare gates will be gradually introduced,
- 3:13conductors will continue to check tickets on
- 3:16board trains. Accepted ticket types include the
- 3:19end ticket app, trolley cards, and printed tickets,
- 3:22but stored -value trolley cards are not valid.
- 3:31Now onto sports. The Falcons won, and now the
- 3:35NFC South champion could be complicated. When
- 3:39the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 3:42both lost on Sunday, It seemed the NFC South
- 3:45would be decided in a winner -take -all matchup
- 3:48in Tampa Bay in Week 18. However, the Atlanta
- 3:52Falcons, eliminated from playoff contention,
- 3:55play a starring role. The Panthers still control
- 3:59their own path. If they beat the Buccaneers on
- 4:01Saturday, they would win the NFC South by reaching
- 4:05nine wins. The Bucs also need to beat the Panthers
- 4:09to stay in contention, but their recent struggles
- 4:12make that difficult. in local sports. Keonte
- 4:17George and the Utah Jazz will host the Celtics
- 4:20in a crucial non -conference matchup tonight
- 4:23at 9 Eastern in Salt Lake City. The Seas, currently
- 4:28third in the Eastern Conference with a record
- 4:30of 19 wins and 12 losses, have been strong defensively,
- 4:35allowing only 110 .5 points per game. In a previous
- 4:41meeting on November 4th, The Jazz narrowly defeated
- 4:44the Celtics 105 to 103, with George scoring 31
- 4:49points. In top news, California has officially
- 4:55abandoned its pursuit of federal funding for
- 4:58high -speed rail, citing the federal government
- 5:01under President Donald Trump as not a reliable,
- 5:05constructive, or trustworthy partner. The state
- 5:08has ended a lawsuit contesting the withdrawal
- 5:10of $4 billion in federal grants for the controversial
- 5:14project. California Attorney General Rob Bonta
- 5:19filed a motion to dismiss this complaint following
- 5:22the Federal Railroad Administration's cancellation
- 5:25of the grants. In a statement, the California
- 5:28High Speed Rail Authority expressed that it has
- 5:31decided to sever ties with the Trump administration.
- 5:35The project is now estimated to cost $128 billion.
- 5:40nearly four times its original price, and California
- 5:44has already spent $15 billion, without even laying
- 5:48one single mile of track in 15 years. In business
- 5:54news, investors are preparing for a very different
- 5:58Federal Reserve in the year ahead. President
- 6:01Trump has indicated he is nearing a selection
- 6:04for the next central bank chair. He has reiterated
- 6:07his demand for lower interest rates, and expects
- 6:10the new leader to align with his agenda. While
- 6:14markets have not shown significant concern about
- 6:16the Fed's independence, investors are wary of
- 6:19potential divisions within the central bank.
- 6:23Analysts warn that a less independent Fed could
- 6:25threaten the economy and markets, as aggressive
- 6:28rate cuts might lead to increased borrowing costs.
- 6:32Many investors anticipate further rate cuts early
- 6:35next year, despite the upcoming leadership change.
- 6:39In crypto movement, Bitcoin is down 2 % to about
- 6:44$87 ,000. Ethereum is down 1 .5 % to $3 ,000.
- 6:52And XRP is down 2 % to $1 .86. Moving on to a

- 7:43back to the show. Let's talk science. The biggest
- 7:47satellite ever just reached low Earth orbit,
- 7:50and it is coming for Starlink. Texas -based ASD
- 7:55SpaceMobile has launched the largest satellite
- 7:57ever, named Bluebird 6, which measures 2 ,400
- 8:02square feet. about the size of a three -bedroom
- 8:05apartment. This satellite aims to provide direct
- 8:085G service to regular cell phones, unlike Starling
- 8:12satellites. ASD plans to launch around 50 more
- 8:16satellites next year. However, the larger size
- 8:20raises concerns about light pollution for astronomers.
- 8:24SpaceX is responding by warning the Federal Communications
- 8:27Commission that Bluebird satellites pose a crash
- 8:30risk. and in entertainment news. The past 12
- 8:37months were supposed to turn things around for
- 8:39struggling cinemas, but instead of a dramatic
- 8:42return to movie -going, 2025 is running neck
- 8:45and neck with a middling 2024 box office. Industry
- 8:50revenues are falling far short of the expected
- 8:53$9 billion in domestic ticket sales. Mike Sherrill,
- 8:58the chief operating officer of Dine and Cinema
- 9:00Chain Alamo Drafthouse, states that it looks
- 9:03like the industry will flatline for two consecutive
- 9:06years. While family films and video game adaptations
- 9:10have performed well, adult -oriented dramas have
- 9:13struggled. The future remains uncertain as streaming
- 9:17services reshape the landscape of theatrical
- 9:20releases. Well, all righty, folks. It's time
- 9:24for the quote of the day. And today... Our quote
- 9:28comes from the American author and humorist,
- 9:31Will Rogers. And he said, even if you're on the
- 9:36right track, you'll get run over if you just
- 9:38sit there. And that's a wrap for this morning.
