Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/11: Joint practice breakdown, Maye starts hot, Pop still popping
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Patriots and Colts got after it today for joint practices,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and there was a lot going on. We're going to
- 0:04Speaker 1: try to break it all down for you. Let's do it.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome everybody to the Patriots Camp cast presented by New Balance.
- 0:17Speaker 1: And yes, the Patriots and Colts were out there, guys
- 0:19Speaker 1: for joint practice today. A lot going on both fields,
- 0:22Speaker 1: coming fast and furious, Paul.
- 0:24Speaker 2: On a swivel, lots of watch.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I thought I thought there was some good work really
- 0:29Speaker 2: all around. I you know, I always think back, I
- 0:32Speaker 2: joked when we did our PU you know podcast earlier
- 0:36Speaker 2: during the practice that you know, I base everything off
- 0:38Speaker 2: of that Philadelphia Eagles one here in Jillette Stadium where
- 0:41Speaker 2: it was like, oh my god, we're in trouble. Nothing
- 0:45Speaker 2: like that. You know. There was some periods of time
- 0:47Speaker 2: that I thought the Patriots looked really good. Thought Drake
- 0:50Speaker 2: May got settled in, uh, you know, for some periods.
- 0:52Speaker 2: And there were other times I thought, quite frankly, you
- 0:54Speaker 2: got a little sloppy with the ball. I thought his
- 0:56Speaker 2: mechanics maybe got away from him, his little casual defense.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I would say similar. I thought there was some open receivers,
- 1:04Speaker 2: but I thought they were pretty physical upfront. I didn't
- 1:06Speaker 2: think they allowed themselves to get gashed a lot, and
- 1:10Speaker 2: with Jonathan Taylor he did increase them a couple of times.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Dangerous guy. But overall I thought it was pretty.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Even as he is known to do. I mean overall,
- 1:18Speaker 1: though Drake may stick on that side, it's pretty good
- 1:19Speaker 1: start for him.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I thought the explosiveness of the passing game was there.
- 1:23Speaker 3: He made a handful of downfield completions. Maybe not consistent
- 1:27Speaker 3: every single throw like Paul was talking about, but you know,
- 1:30Speaker 3: really nice go ball to Romeo Dobbs along the sideline,
- 1:34Speaker 3: couple of play action shots to the tight ends, Henry
- 1:37Speaker 3: ardan aj Brown down the sideline for another one. So
- 1:40Speaker 3: it was that big play may stuff that we're so
- 1:43Speaker 3: used to seeing. But the Colts got the last left.
- 1:45Speaker 3: They got the explanation point there starting offense, and Daniel
- 1:49Speaker 3: Jones drove right down and I'm sure we'll talk about
- 1:51Speaker 3: Tyler Warren here in a second and scored. And the
- 1:54Speaker 3: Patriots ended with an interception. So I know everybody's going
- 1:57Speaker 3: to declare a winner of practice and a lot of
- 1:59Speaker 3: these wrap ups, I guess the Colts got the last
- 2:02Speaker 3: laugh there at the end.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Just a few names to throw you guys. I thoughts
- 2:05Speaker 1: to know Pop Douglas continuing his really solid camp, had
- 2:08Speaker 1: a bunch of catches, including down at that last team period.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You know, we're seeing Eli Raridan continue just you know,
- 2:13Speaker 1: not a ton of volume, but one's two's popping up
- 2:17Speaker 1: a little bit for him. And then had a part
- 2:18Speaker 1: of probably the play of the day Tommy Devido again
- 2:21Speaker 1: downfield to Kyle Williams, who had a really nice to another.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Really yes, I mean I would agree with all of
- 2:25Speaker 2: the things that you pointed out. I would throw Romeo
- 2:27Speaker 2: Dobbs in there. The play that Evan referenced to me
- 2:30Speaker 2: was vintage Dobbs. He's just, you know, kind of a
- 2:32Speaker 2: fade down the sideline, down the field, effortless. The hands
- 2:36Speaker 2: are so strong. You put it on him and he's
- 2:38Speaker 2: going to catch it. He doesn't need a ton of separation.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He had a little on that play, But I think
- 2:44Speaker 2: that he's starting to stack days now. We're starting to
- 2:47Speaker 2: see the guy from Green Bay on a more consistent basis.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. He shook a Colt's defensive back in
- 2:52Speaker 3: the end zone during the red zone work as well
- 2:54Speaker 3: and scored there. I think two days in a row,
- 2:57Speaker 3: Romeo Dobbs looks more comfortable, looks like Drake may understanding
- 3:00Speaker 3: the routes that he wants to be running and where
- 3:02Speaker 3: he wants to be targeted on the field. I thought
- 3:05Speaker 3: the goball is just a great example. The Colts loaded
- 3:08Speaker 3: up with pressure on the line of scrimmage, showed a
- 3:10Speaker 3: bunch of pressure. They had Henry and Ramandre in the
- 3:12Speaker 3: backfield together to pick up the pressure, and then it
- 3:15Speaker 3: was just go routes on the outside and just take
- 3:17Speaker 3: your pick with no safety a deep and he hit
- 3:20Speaker 3: Dobbs on the sideline. So some good answers to pressure,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know, take your shots when you get that cover
- 3:26Speaker 3: zero look. And Dobbs just been better and better.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, More did some good things today too as well.
- 3:30Speaker 1: A couple of catches for him in the end zone
- 3:32Speaker 1: as well.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It's blitz beaters, you know, and that's something we've been
- 3:35Speaker 2: talking about all summer. You know, they can't they still
- 3:37Speaker 2: seem like they're struggling with some of those overload blitzes.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Well that's the best way to make teams stop doing it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and then on the defensive side of the ball,
- 3:43Speaker 1: of course, the headline We didn't see Christian Gonzalez today.
- 3:45Speaker 1: At this point, we're not sure exactly did land Hard yesterday? Yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 1: after that contested catch in the end zone. Bite Dobbs
- 3:51Speaker 1: maybe an ankle injury, we don't know. We know his
- 3:53Speaker 1: contract is up in the air, but certainly without him.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Carlton Davis was back, but he didn't participate. Felt like
- 3:58Speaker 1: the Patriots defensive they were down the depth chart a
- 4:01Speaker 1: little bit. They were having some.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Try It was a funny day, right, It was the
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, none of the Patriots, I mean, Marcus Jones
- 4:06Speaker 2: really was the only corner that you would expect to
- 4:09Speaker 2: see out there regularly for the Patriots, and virtually none
- 4:12Speaker 2: of the receivers for the Colts other than Tyler Warren,
- 4:14Speaker 2: who was a tight end. And I thought, if we're
- 4:17Speaker 2: going to compare backups here, I thought the Colts backups
- 4:20Speaker 2: got the better of the Patriots backups. They were opened consistently.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say it was kind of a wash
- 4:24Speaker 3: because Josh Downs did practice against Marcus Jones, so you
- 4:28Speaker 3: kind of washed that one out. And that was backup
- 4:30Speaker 3: receivers against backup corners.
- 4:32Speaker 2: On the outside.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I would just highlight Warren. We kind of knew this
- 4:35Speaker 3: was coming deuced because last summer it was TJ. Hockinson
- 4:38Speaker 3: in Minnesota doing the same thing to the Patriots defense.
- 4:41Speaker 3: That two minute drill by Daniel Jones. All three plays
- 4:44Speaker 3: to get them down there on the goal line. We're
- 4:46Speaker 3: all Tyler Warren, you know, over the ball wheel route
- 4:49Speaker 3: down the sideline, and he was open consistently and then
- 4:52Speaker 3: down you know, got the actual touchdown. But I think
- 4:56Speaker 3: covering tight ends and this scheme and this defense, I
- 4:58Speaker 3: still feel like it's a little little bit of a
- 5:01Speaker 3: enigma of how exactly they want to plan for guys
- 5:04Speaker 3: like Tyler Warren. You know, he's a rare breed, like
- 5:07Speaker 3: he's one of the best tight ends in football, but
- 5:09Speaker 3: it's still something you gotta worry.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Mike. I felt a little like you on the field
- 5:12Speaker 2: after practice. You know, Tyler Warren was probably about twenty
- 5:16Speaker 2: feet away from me, and I think I had Derek
- 5:18Speaker 2: Henry vibes from you. That dude is big.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Yeah he's a specimen. But you know, no Gonzalez, no Davis,
- 5:24Speaker 3: no Christian Barmore up front for the Patriots defense. So
- 5:27Speaker 3: they were missing some key players on defense. The Cols
- 5:30Speaker 3: didn't have Alec Pierce, but the other receivers are out there.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, let's just talk about that last two minute drive
- 5:35Speaker 1: to for Drake, which I don't know what you saw.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I was a little bit blocked by the pole there
- 5:39Speaker 1: as he launched up that final pass, but he did
- 5:40Speaker 1: throw an interception to close out that period.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it looked like again they showed pressure inside and
- 5:46Speaker 3: someone on the interior I couldn't tell exactly who, but
- 5:48Speaker 3: it was in the inside got immediate pressure and kind
- 5:51Speaker 3: of rocked them back off of his spot. And then
- 5:54Speaker 3: he tried to go to his right and kind of
- 5:55Speaker 3: reload and reset and throw the ball. I thought he
- 5:58Speaker 3: had Douglas, but it was going to be a tight window,
- 6:01Speaker 3: like he was gonna have to really fit it over
- 6:03Speaker 3: the safety. But because he kind of threw off platform
- 6:06Speaker 3: a little bit, he didn't have enough on the ball
- 6:08Speaker 3: and Cambine them ended up picking it off. So probably
- 6:11Speaker 3: one he said it after practice that he thinks it
- 6:14Speaker 3: was second down. Probably when you throw out the back
- 6:16Speaker 3: of the end zone and live to play another place.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Because I'm looking back because I took note of his explanation.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He sort of made it out to be kind of
- 6:23Speaker 2: a desperation play. There was twenty four seconds left. Yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 2: it was second and thirteen, so it wasn't quite you know,
- 6:29Speaker 2: do or die, And I just think it was a
- 6:32Speaker 2: bad throw. I mean, he under the rule. I thought
- 6:34Speaker 2: Douglas was open. That's the thing.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I feel like we've done enough of these joint practices
- 6:37Speaker 1: where if you don't get lost in the details, it's up,
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's down. It's just it's just really good work for
- 6:42Speaker 1: these guys to go against another team, to go against
- 6:44Speaker 1: another scheme. There were some ups and downs for both
- 6:47Speaker 1: sides of the ball, but overall, I think they go
- 6:49Speaker 1: back there with a lot of film to break down
- 6:51Speaker 1: and a lot of good stuff.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I bet both coaching staffs are pretty pleased with what happened.
- 6:54Speaker 2: There wasn't really a ton of you know, John back
- 6:57Speaker 2: and forth. It was a little here and there, but
- 6:58Speaker 2: not a ton. I thought they got good reps for
- 7:00Speaker 2: a lot of different guys.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just competitive, Like I thought, both sides
- 7:05Speaker 3: kind of traded punches, not literally figuratively, and that was
- 7:09Speaker 3: pretty clean. Like Paul mentioned off the top that Eagles
- 7:12Speaker 3: joint practice was so one sided all over the field, offense, defense, whatever,
- 7:17Speaker 3: this one felt a lot more like the one we
- 7:19Speaker 3: were in Minnesota last year. Do you swear it was like, Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 3: the Vikings made some plays, the Patriots made some plays,
- 7:24Speaker 3: the Colts made some place this here today. But I thought, overall,
- 7:28Speaker 3: like I said at the beginning, I thought Drake May
- 7:30Speaker 3: was really good until the pick at the end, you know,
- 7:33Speaker 3: and that kind of puts a sour note on it.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah, all right. Well, Mike Frebel also said, we probably
- 7:37Speaker 1: won't see Drake May on Thursday night against these Colts,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but hey, first preseason game of the season getting underway,
- 7:43Speaker 1: be sure to tune into the Patriots pregame show with
- 7:45Speaker 1: Paul On myself and a new cast that we have.
- 7:47Speaker 1: We're excited to introduce everybody to that new cast we'll
- 7:50Speaker 1: see on Thursday night.
