- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: We writers often talk about the reasons we write, but what are the reasons that we don't write?
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: What keeps us from writing?
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Several things probably come to mind, such as procrastination, not enough time, not feeling creative, among other reasons.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, there's one main thing that keeps us from writing.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: The novelist Erica Jong hit the nail on the head when she said, I went for years not finishing anything, because of course when you finish something, you can be judged.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Now we're all writers here and we all understand each other, so let's take a moment for a little bit of honesty.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Is there somebody in your life you're afraid of disappointing with your writing?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a parent or a sibling.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a teacher.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a friend of yours who has a popular blog or has had some books published.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Imagine that you put your writing out there and they don't like it.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Maybe they express some disappointment or even leave a bad review on Amazon.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Then they move on with their life and they promptly forget about it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: But that's about the extent of it, right?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: At its worst, being judged by somebody just means that your writing isn't for them.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: But that's about the extent of it.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: At its worst, being judged by someone just means that our writing is not for them.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Yet in our minds, we're terrified of not being liked, we're terrified of disappointing somebody.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And we let this fear of being judged by one person keep us from writing stuff that 99 other people will love.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So finish your writing, do the work.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Chances are pretty high that the 99 will love it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And the one person who might not like it, well, that means it just wasn't for them.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: We like to think of this person as the one we should convince, the one we should try and bring into the fold of our readership.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: But you have to let them go.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about the one that got away.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Instead, focus your energy on the 99 who enjoy your work and really want to support you.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: You know, nobody said this was going to be easy, but learning to let go is an essential part of being a writer.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
