- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the Astrology for Beginners podcast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Stefanie Kate Boucher, and I am so glad you're here.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: This is the podcast for you if you've ever been curious about astrology,
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: if you've wanted to understand your natal chart or make sense of what's happening in
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: the sky,
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: but maybe it's felt overwhelming, complicated, or hard to know where to begin.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: My goal here is to break things down in a way that's clear,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: grounded,
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: and completely usable in real life so that over time you begin
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: to understand your own chart and the language of the stars.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for being here and sharing your time with me.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, welcome back to Astrology for Beginners.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Today I want to talk about something that I do get asked about from time to time and
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: that is Why are there a few signs,
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: such as Scorpio,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: which we have of course been talking about a lot lately with Venus retrograde,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: that have more than one planetary ruler?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So lately, Mars and Pluto have been all over this show.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: They've come up in pretty much every recent episode,
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: partly because of the Mars-Pluto opposition we just had,
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: and partly because Venus is retrograde in Scorpio,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: and has been making some tense aspects to both of them.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: And over and over, I've been describing Mars and Pluto as both being rulers of Scorpio.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Mars as Scorpio's traditional ruler and Pluto as its modern ruler.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: at some point it occurred to me that I've been saying that as
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: though everybody automatically knows what I mean.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Some of you certainly do.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But if you're relatively new to astrology, you might very reasonably be thinking...
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Hey, wait a minute.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Like, I thought Mars ruled Scorpio.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Like, what is this business about Pluto?
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you learned that Pluto is associated with Scorpio and Mars felt like news to you.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So which one is it?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Why does Scorpio apparently get two rulers when most signs only have one ruler?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: The same thing, of course, happens with a couple of other signs.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Depending on what you're reading,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: you might see Aquarius, described as being ruled by Uranus or by Saturn.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And Pisces might be ruled by Neptune or by Jupiter.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: So today I thought we'd do a relatively short,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: straightforward explanation of why this is the case.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Why do three of the zodiac signs have two rulers,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: or at least appear two, while all the rest have one?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk a little bit about where the original planetary ruler ships came
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: from,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: what happened when Uranus,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Neptune,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: and Pluto were discovered,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: and how you might actually work with traditional and or modern rulers in your chart.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And as is so often the case, we need our history to help make the whole thing make sense.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: For most of astrology's history,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: for most of human history,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: there were not, I repeat, there were not two sets of planetary rulers.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: There was only one set of planetary rulers.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And that system was built around what astrologers will call the seven traditional
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: or classical planets, the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Technically,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: of course,
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: the Sun and Moon aren't planets,
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: astronomically speaking,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: but in astrology we tend to use the word planet as shorthand for all seven
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: of these bodies.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: There's a very practical reason that this list of planets stops at the number seven.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: These were the planets people could actually see.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Uranus, Neptune,
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: and Pluto are very far away and not visible to the naked eye,
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: so for most of history, nobody knew they were there.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And you can't include something in the astrological story if you don't know it exists.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So astrologers worked with the planets they could see.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And the original rulership system built around those seven planets is actually very elegant.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: If you've ever learned the traditional rulers as some kind of list or looked at
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: a list, you may not realize that there's actually a structure to it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So if you can, try picturing the zodiac.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: As a circle, right?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: It's just like a chart's a circle.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Try picturing the zodiac as a circle.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And I don't know how you all like to envision a calendar year in your head
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: if you ever picture one.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: I always,
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: for some reason,
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: envision a year as a circle with like a starting point and an ending point.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure everyone imagines it this way.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe you imagine a horizontal line, like a timeline or something.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: But in this case, imagine there's a circle.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And in this circle,
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: the signs of Cancer and Leo are sitting side by side right at the top, right?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: You have the whole calendar year of zodiac signs going around the circle in order,
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: and we're going to put Cancer and Leo at the top.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: We begin with the sun and the moon, right, in the old traditional system.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Because they're the luminaries,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: they were seen as kind of the rulers or the leaders or the king and queen of
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: the system.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: They were special.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: They gave us light.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: They each ruled just one sign while all of the other planets ruled two signs.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So the moon rules Cancer and the sun rules Leo, right?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: These are the two most summery seasons of the year, really, in the northern hemisphere.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: That's our king and our queen, the sun and the moon sitting together at the top of the circle.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: And then moving outward from Cancer and Leo down both sides of the circle at once,
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: the remaining planets are assigned to They're signs in planetary order from,
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: you know, whichever one is closest to the sun to farthest away in the solar system.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Those are the two signs that flank Cancer and Leo, right?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: So Mercury flanks the king and queen on either side of them.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Go out one more space on either side.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: And we have Venus, which rules the next two signs.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Taurus on one side, Libra on the other side.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Go out one more space and Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Go out one more space on either side and Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: And finally,
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Saturn rules Aquarius and Capricorn,
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: which incidentally meet together at the very bottom of the circle.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Directly across from the Sun and the Moon.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: So the Sun and the Moon each rule one sign,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: while each of the other five traditional planets rules two,
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: kind of cascading down from the top.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And this is pretty important to consider.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: These weren't simply personality associations, right?
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It wasn't just like, oh, you know, hey, Mars feels fiery, so let's give Mars Aries, right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: It was more about planetary rulership.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Planetary rulership was part of a much larger system that astrologers had used
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: to understand the condition of a planet and how it was functioning in a chart,
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: right?
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: This is where we get the idea of a planet being in its domicile.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: You know, you'll sometimes hear people describe that a planet is at home, right?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Mars is at home in Aries and Scorpio.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Jupiter is at home in Sagittarius and Pisces because those are the signs that each
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: of those planets rule.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: They are in domicile in those signs.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And domicile rulership is just one part of a much larger traditional concept
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: that is called essential dignity.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And there's,
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: a whole rabbit hole we could go down here involving exaltation,
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: detriment, fall, you know, and other forms of dignity.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: But we are not going to do that today.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: And in fact,
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: there's a much earlier episode of this show on the Planetary Condition
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: and Essential Dignity.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: So go back and listen to that if you want to brush up on this topic.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: But for our purposes today,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: the important thing to understand is that the traditional rulerships belonged to
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: a coherent and very elegant astrological system.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And for a very long time, that was the system.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And then something pretty significant happened.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And that was that we got quite a bit better at looking into space, right?
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Better telescopes meant we could see things that were much farther away
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: that could not be seen before.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune was discovered in 1846, and Pluto was discovered in 1930.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And so, you know,
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: now you had astrologers,
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: you know, kind of in a bit of a conundrum, I guess you could say, right?
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: A brand new planet gets discovered and suddenly kind of an old system
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: that was very clear and very tidy kind of like didn't have a space
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: for these new planets.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: So, of course, people started wondering, like, what does this planet mean?
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: What kind of...
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: What energy does this planet carry?
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And over time,
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: they began observing these planets and making hypotheses about what they each meant,
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: developing symbolism around them, and then associating them with particular signs.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: we now know that eventually Uranus became associated with Aquarius,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Neptune with Pisces, and Pluto with Scorpio.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: And that's where our two-ruler situation comes from because
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: the traditional rulers were already in use and had been the standard for ages
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: and ages.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Aquarius already had a ruler in Saturn and Pisces already had a ruler in Jupiter
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: and Scorpio, you know, already had a ruler in Mars.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So even though some astrologers began making these connections
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: of these outer planets to the newer or at least more newly discovered planets,
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: not everyone agreed that the new planets should replace the old rulers.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: They still don't agree.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: You know, there are very different perspectives on this to this day.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Part of the reason has to do with how different these new planets are from the old ones.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: It is pretty widely accepted that the outer planets, Uranus,
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Neptune,
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: and Pluto,
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: that their major job So our job is really to influence the collective of humanity,
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: you know, our collective experiences, rather than the individual alone.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And so there can be this particular train of thought that the traditional rulers,
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: right, the classical planets, as personal planets with essential
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: For, you know,
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: reading personal astrology or natal chart astrology while
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: the modern planetary rulers are useful for mundane astrology or the astrology of
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: the collective.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: If you ever listen to the astrology forecasts that predict what's going to be going
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: on on, say,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: an election day or during a larger cultural shift or something like that,
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: that's what we mean when we say mundane astrology.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: It's the astrology of the collective.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: But certainly Uranus,
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Neptune, and Pluto are often called generational planets or collective planets.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And that's largely because they move so slowly through the zodiac.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Uranus takes about 84 years or so to complete its journey around the sun.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Neptune takes about 165 years.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And Pluto...
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: It takes roughly 248 years.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: That means that each of these planets can spend years or even decades moving through
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: a single zodiac sign.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: So unlike the Sun,
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: the Moon, Venus,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Mercury, Mars,
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: which move around the zodiac wheel pretty quickly and can tell us a lot about,
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: you know, a person's individual personality and experience that's unique to them.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: The outer planets are shared by an entire, you know, generations of people.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: This is one reason modern astrologers often look to them when interpreting
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: the collective experience, right?
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So Uranus in a sign can describe periods of, uh,
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Disruption,
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: innovation, rebellion, and social change that are very particular to that era.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Neptune can reflect collective ideals or spiritual movements or cultural zeitgeists
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: and sometimes widespread confusion or disillusionment about a particular thing or in
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: a particular area of the culture.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: And Pluto is typically associated with deeper transformations,
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: especially the ones that involve power or institutions or the structures
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: of our society.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: And together,
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: these planets can tell us something about the broader cultural atmosphere or
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: the zeitgeist of a particular period in our history.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: you can probably start to see why this would matter for our rulership question,
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: right?
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: The whole traditional rulership system was built around those seven visible planets,
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: the ones that move quickly enough to say something unique about you as a person.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And the outer planets are a different kind of planet.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: They're slower.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: They're bigger picture.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: They're more about the generation you were born into rather than about you and you alone.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: But that doesn't mean they aren't important in your birth chart, though.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: They absolutely can be.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: We just need to look at how they're connected to the rest of your chart.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: For example,
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: if Pluto is closely conjunct your sun or your moon or Uranus is sitting right
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: on your ascendant or something,
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: those planets are going to have a much more individualized significance
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: than they would simply by occupying some
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Particular sign of your chart, right?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: The houses they occupy,
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: the aspects they make to your personal planets,
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: and their relationships to your angles can all help us understand how these broader,
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: more collective themes might show up in your own life.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: how some of these qualities associated with those planets are unique
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: to your personality as well.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: That is also true.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: In any case, you now might be wondering, did the modern rulers replace the old ones?
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Well, no, not really.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: And this is where things can get confusing for people because the answer depends on
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: whom you ask.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Traditional astrologers generally still use,
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Mars as the ruler of Scorpio,
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Jupiter as the ruler of Pisces, and Saturn as the ruler of Aquarius.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Modern astrologers may use Pluto, Neptune, Aquarius.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And there are plenty of astrologers who work with some combination of both systems.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: If you do use a combination of both,
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: I think it's important to know That these planets aren't interchangeable, right?
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Mars isn't simply, you know, some old fashioned version of Pluto.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Saturn isn't, you know, Uranus before Uranus was discovered and Jupiter isn't Neptune.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: They are different, distinct planets and they tell us very different things about a chart.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: And we can take Scorpio as an example.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: When you look at Scorpio through Mars,
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: you get a Mars that's in a very watery kind of dark sort of sign,
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: nighttime sort of sign, right?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: This isn't the charge ahead Mars of Aries, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: It's a quieter,
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: more strategic Mars,
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: patient, private, protective of what matters to it and not inclined to forget.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: When you look at Scorpio through Pluto, the emphasis shifts.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Now we're talking about depth,
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: intensity, power,
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: transformation,
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: stuff that lives beneath our fists and the process of tearing down something so
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: that it can be rebuilt.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Same sign, two really different flavors.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: And both are true.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: So, which one should you use?
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: If you're looking at a chart, which ruler should you use?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: When we're doing some of the more technical work of reading a birth chart,
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: many astrologers still prefer the traditional rulers.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: For example,
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: when we're looking at which planet rules a particular house,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: following a chain of dispositors or identifying the ruler of the ascendant,
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: those techniques developed within the traditional seven planet system.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: So using the rulers preserves the logic of that system.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: And as we just talked about,
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: those seven planets are the ones built to describe you as an individual.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: But that doesn't mean we have to disregard the outer planets.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Many contemporary astrologers,
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: myself included, sometimes find it useful to consider the modern rulers too.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe not as the primary ruler or the go-to planet, but at least as a supporting character.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: They can add another dimension to To the interpretation,
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: particularly when they're strongly connected to other important parts of the chart.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: So rather than thinking of the traditional and modern rulers
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: as two planets competing for the same job,
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: I think it's more helpful perhaps to see them both as having something
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: to contribute.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: And this becomes especially interesting if Scorpio, Aquarius, or Pisces is your rising sign.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: In that case,
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: I'd go with the traditional ruler first,
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: personal planets, right,
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: classical planets,
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: and then check on the modern one to see if it's a significant part of the chart
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: and what it might want to add and how it ties into the story.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Which brings us back to Mars and Pluto, I think.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: And this is really what actually got me thinking about this whole topic in the first place.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: We recently had that opposition between Mars and Pluto.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And because Venus is retrograde in Scorpio,
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: I've been talking quite a bit about the fact that Mars
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: and Pluto are Scorpio's traditional and modern rulers.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: But there's another symbolic layer to that opposition that I find really interesting.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: We literally had Scorpio's ancient ruler in Mars sitting across the zodiac from
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: the planet that modern astrologer eventually started associating to Scorpio, right?
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: The traditional ruler opposing the modern ruler, the old and the new in a kind of face-off.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: If you will,
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Mars and Pluto already bring up questions around power,
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: agency, control and authority and these types of things.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: But viewed through this lens,
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: we can also start talking about the way power itself starts to change.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: What happens when an established way of doing something encounters a new one?
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Where are old structures of authority meeting new or emerging structures and authority?
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: What from the old way still works and what might need to evolve?
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: All of that feels so incredibly relevant for the times that we are living in.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Between those who want to push forward and build what's next and those
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: who aren't ready to leave the existing systems behind.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: oppositions in astrology are about feeling like two things are incompatible, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Like it has to be one or the other and there's no other way but for it to be one or the other.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: But the lesson in an opposition is is always about meeting the opposing side in
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: the middle and making room for both things to exist.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: That's the only way In opposition in astrology gets managed successfully.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: So it feels relevant for the culture and it feels relevant for these two systems
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: of astrology itself even.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Traditional astrology didn't cease to exist when Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: And modern astrology didn't, you know, simply just say, well, okay, we give up.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: We won't include the new stuff and just preserve The old astrology exactly
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: as it always had been, right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Something new encountered something old and astrologers had to figure out what to do
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: with that,
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: which is what we as human beings always have to do when the new encounters the old.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: So the next time you see two different rulers listed for Scorpio,
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Aquarius,
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: or Pisces,
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: if this was confusing to you before,
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: you don't need to wonder which source got it wrong.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: You're just looking at two different traditions, an old one and a new one.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And once you know what the history of that all looks like, right,
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: what seems like an annoying inconsistency in astrology actually becomes
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: a pretty interesting glimpse into how The discipline of astrology has evolved
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: over time because all things eventually evolve.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's all for now, friends.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening.
